Electron sources are essential to an array of electron accelerator supporting research in high-energy physics and beyond. This report summarizes the "Snowmass 2021 Electron Source Workshop" which reviewed the current state-of-the art research and identified some possible research directions.

The high intensity polarized electron source is a critical component for future nuclear physics facilities. The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) requires a polarized electron gun with higher voltage and higher bunch charge compared to any existing polarized electron source. At Brookhaven National Laboratory, we have built an inverted high voltage direct current (HVDC) photoemission gun with a large cathode size. We report on the performances of GaAs photocathodes in a high gradient with up to a 16 nC bunch charge. The measurements were performed at a stable operating gap voltage of 300 kV - demonstrating outstanding lifetime, and robustness. We observed obvious lifetime enhancement by biasing the anode. The gun also integrated a cathode cooling system for potential application on high current electron sources. The various novel features implemented and demonstrated in this polarized HVDC gun open the door towards future high intensity-high average current electron accelerator facilities., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We present analytic cooling and diffusion rates for a simplified model of coherent electron cooling (CEC), based on a proton energy kick at each turn. This model also allows to estimate analytically the rms value of electron beam density fluctuations in the "kicker" section. Having such analytic expressions should allow for better understanding of the CEC mechanism, and for a quicker analysis and optimization of main system parameters. Our analysis is applicable to any CEC amplification mechanism, as long as the wake (kick) function is available.

Integrating femtosecond (fs) lasers to electron microscopies has enabled direct imaging of transient structures and morphologies of materials in real time and space, namely, ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM). Here we report the development of a laser-free UEM offering the same capability of real-time imaging with high spatiotemporal resolutions but without requiring expensive fs lasers and intricate instrumental modifications. We create picosecond electron pulses for probing dynamic events by chopping a continuous beam with a radiofrequency (RF)-driven pulser, where the repetition rate of the electron pulses is tunable from 100 MHz to 12 GHz. A same broadband of electromagnetic wave is enabled for sample excitation. As a first application, we studied the GHz electromagnetic wave propagation dynamics in an interdigitated comb structure which is one of the basic building blocks for RF micro-electromechanical systems. A series of pump-probe images reveals, on nanometer space and picosecond time scales, the transient oscillating electromagnetic field around the tines of the combs, and time-resolved polarization, amplitude, and nonlinear local field enhancement. The success of this study demonstrates the feasibility of the low-cost laser-free UEM in real-space visualizing of dynamics for many research fields, especially the electrodynamics in devices associated with information processing technology., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

Reported here is the first demonstration of electron beam generation in an SRF TESLA 1.3 GHz gun equipped with field emission cathode when operated at 2 Kelvin. The cathode is submicron film of nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] deposited atop a Nb RRR300 cathode plug. The output current was measured to increase exponentially as a function of the cavity gradient. Our results demonstrate a feasible path toward simplified fully cryogenic SRF injector technology. One important finding is that the electron emitter made of (N)UNCD, a material long been known as a highly efficient field emission material, demonstrated a record low turn-on gradient of 0.6 MV/m. A hypothesis explaining this behavior is proposed.

The Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) paradigm offers the promise to generate intense electron beams of superior quality with extremely small six-dimensional phase space for many applications in the physical sciences, materials science, chemistry, health, information technology and security. Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin started in 2010 an intensive R\&D programme to address the challenges related to the ERL as driver for future light sources by setting up the bERLinPro (Berlin ERL Project) ERL with 50 MeV beam energy and high average current. The project is close to reach its major milestone in 2020, acceleration and recovery of a high brightness electron beam. The goal of bERLinProCamp 2019 was to discuss scientific opportunities for bERLinPro 2020+. bERLinProCamp 2019 was held on Tue, 17.09.2019 at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Berlin, Germany. This paper summarizes the main themes and output of the workshop.

Charge lifetime of strained superlattice GaAs photocathodes in DC guns is limited by ion back bombardment. It needs to be improved at least an order of magnitude to meet the requirements for future colliders such as Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In this work, we propose and present simulation results for an offset anode scheme to increase charge lifetime in DC guns. This scheme eliminates the bombardment of high energy ions on the cathode and enables maximum usage of the available cathode area. Depending on the size of the available cathode area, this method can increase the charge lifetime by an order of magnitude compared to the current best alternative method. An anode assembly capable of in-vacuum movement is required for this method, which has been designed and fabricated at Brookhaven National Laboratory., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

High-gradient CW photo-injectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many sciences and applications. They can establish the basis for super-bright monochromatic X-ray free-electron lasers, super-bright hadron beams, nuclear- waste transmutation or a new generation of microchip production. In this letter we report on our operation of a superconducting RF electron gun with a record-high accelerating gradient at the CsK2Sb photocathode (i.e. ~ 20 MV/m) generating a record-high bunch charge (i.e., 3 nC). We briefly describe the system and then detail our experimental results.
