2. Decays of $D_{sj}^*(2317)$ and $D_{sj}(2460)$ Mesons in the Quark Model

Abstract

We study the decay widths of the narrow resonances $D_{sj}^*(2317)$ and $D_{sj}(2460)$ in the chiral quark model, together with the well-known $D^\ast$ and $D_s^*$ mesons. All the parameters in our calculation are taken from Godfrey and Isgur's quark model except the $\pi^0-\eta$ mixing angle which is fixed by the $D_s^*$ decay widths. The calculated electromagnetic decay widths agree with those from other groups and the experimental data available quite well. However, the pionic decay widths of $D_{sj}(2317)$ and $D_{sj}(2460)$ are too small to fit the experimental data. We suspect that the simple chiral quark pion axial-vector interaction Hamiltonian is not suitable for hadron strong decays of $D_{sj}(2317)$ and $D_{sj}(2460)$.

21. Acute Cycas seed poisoning in Taiwan

Abstract

Objective: The seeds of cycads contain cycasin and neocycasin, which belong to the family of cyanogenic glycosides. These glycosides of cycads are considered pseudocyanogenic with little potential to liberate hydrogen cyanide as other cyanogenic glycosides do. This study investigated the clinical spectrum of Cycas seed poisoning and its cyanogenic potential. Methods: This was a retrospective chart review conducted at the Poison Control Center in Taiwan (PCC-Taiwan) from 1990 to 2001. Results: Twenty-one cases of Cycas seed poisoning were identified. The reasons for seed ingestion were misuse as an edible food (70%), health promotion (10%), cancer prevention (10%), cosmetic use (5%), and gastrointestinal discomfort (5%). All patients had eaten the seeds after washing and cooking them. The time from ingestion to the onset of symptoms ranged from 30 min to 7h (mean 2.8h); patients had ingested between 1 to 30 seeds. Respiratory depression did not occur. Severe vomiting was the most striking symptom. All patients except one presented with gastrointestinal disturbance, and 90% sought medical care at the emergency department. Within 24h, all patients had recovered. Six patients had blood cyanide or thiocyanate levels measured. Although the levels were higher than normal, they did not reach the toxic range. Conclusions: The cyanogenic potential of Cycas seeds is documented in our cases. The gastrointestinal symptoms were severe enough that most patients sought medical attention but recovery was quick and complete. Abstract

Background. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used for treatment of lupus erythematosus. The cardiac toxicity of HCQ has focused primarily on acute intoxication. We report a case of chronic use of HCQ associated with torsade de pointes. Case report. A 67-year-old female presented with acquired long QT interval syndrome with a refractory ventricular arrhythmia. She was receiving chronic therapeutic doses of HCQ for the treatment of lupus erythematosus. Torsades de pointes was diagnosed in the Emergency Department (ED). After excluding other causes of long QT syndrome, the HCQ was suspected as the cause of her ventricular tachycardia. After discontinuing the HCQ, the QT interval was shorter and the patient recovered after treatment with lidocaine and isoproterenol. Conclusion. Abstract

We study the bifurcation diagrams of classical positive solutions $u$ with $\lVert u \rVert_{\infty} \in (0,\infty)$ of the $p$-Laplacian Dirichlet problem $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} \varphi_{p}(u'(x)))' + \lambda f_{q,r}(u(x)) = 0,\ \ \ -1 \lt x \lt 1, \\ u(-1) = 0 = u(1), \end{array}\right.$$ where $p \gt 1$, $\varphi_{p}(y) = |y|_{p-2}$, $(\varphi(u'))'$ is the one dimensional $p$-Laplacian, $\lambda \gt 0$ is a bifurcation parameter, and $$f_{q,r}(u) = \left\{\begin{array}{ll} \mid 1-u \mid^q,\ \ \ \textrm{if } 0 \lt u \leq 1, \\ \mid 1-u \mid^r,\ \ \ \textrm{if } u \gt 0, \end{array}\right.$$ with positive constants $q$ and $r$. We give explicit formulas of bifurcation curves of classical positive solutions on the $\left( \lambda ,\left\Vert u\right\Vert _{\infty }\right) $-plane. More importantly, for different $(p,q,r)$, we give a complete classification of all bifurcation diagrams. Hence we are able to determine the (exact) multiplicity of classical positive solutions for each $(p,q,r,\lambda )$. Our results generalize the results of Lee et,al [J. Math. Anal. Appl., 330 (2007), 276-290] with nonlinearity $f_{q,r}$ generalized from $q = r \gt 0$ to $q,r \gt 0$.

Abstract

Based on the nonlinear time series local prediction method and the relevance vector machine regression model, the local relevance vector machine prediction method is proposed and applied to predict the small scale traffic measurement data, and the BIC-based neighbor point selection method is used to choose the number of nearest-neighbor points for the local relevance vector machine regression model. We also compare the performance of the local relevance vector machine regression model with the feed-forward neural network optimized by particle swarm optimization for the same problem. Experimental results show that the local relevance vector machine prediction method whose neighboring points have been optimized can effectively predict the small scale traffic measurement data, can reproduce the statistical features of real small scale traffic measurements, and the prediction accuracy of the local relevance vector machine regression model is superior to that of the feedforward neural network optimized by PSO and the local linear prediction method.

43. Effect of aberrations in human eye on contrast sensitivity function

Abstract

The quantitative analysis of the effect of aberrations in human eye on vision has important clinical value in the correction of aberrations. The wave-front aberrations of human eyes were measured with the Hartmann-Shack wave-front sensor and modulation transfer function (MTF) was computed from the wave-front aberrations. Contrast sensitivity function (CSF) was obtained from MTF and the retinal aerial image modulation (AIM). It is shown that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Zernike aberrations deteriorate contrast sensitivity function. When the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Zernike aberrations are corrected high contrast sensitivity function can be obtained.

Abstract

Objective: To study the prevention and treatment mechanism of Qingxia therapy (based on Yinchenhao Decoction and Dachengqi Decoction) on hepatocyte apoptosis in rats with acute hepatic injury induced by lipopolysaccharide plus D-galactosamine (LPS/D-GalN)., Methods: The acute hepatic injury model was established by LPS/D-GalN and then intervened with Qingxia therapy. Serum liver function, PT and liver tissue pathology were observed, hepatocyte apoptosis index was detected by Tunel, protein expressions of BCL-2, BAX and Caspase-3 were detected by Western blotting., Results: Qingxia therapy could significantly decrease serum ALT, AST and TBIL levels (P < 0.01 or 0.05), reduce hepatocyte necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration. There were more apoptotic cells in model group, which had significant differences compared with Qingxia group and control group. Protein expressions of BAX and Caspase-3 in model group were significantly higher than those in control group and Qingxia group (P < 0.05), but BCL-2 protein expression in model group was lower (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Qingxia therapy can ameliorate the liver function and hepatic tissue pathology of rats with hepatic injury induced by LPS/D-GalN, alleviate hepatocyte apoptosis in rats, prevent and treat hepatocyte apoptosis by down-regulating the protein expressions of Caspase-3 and BAX, up-regulating the protein expression of BCL-2, and adjusting the balance of BCL-2/BAX.

Abstract

In the crystal of the title polymeric complex, [Ni(2)(C(18)H(4)O(10))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)(8)](n), each Ni(II) cation is coord-in-ated by four water mol-ecules in the equatorial plane, and is further bridged by an 9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydro-anthracene-1,4,5,8-tetra-carb-oxy-l-ate anion and a 4,4'-bipyridine ligand in the axial directions, forming a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The 9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydro-anthracene-1,4,5,8-tetra-carboxyl-ate anion is centrosymmetric with the centroid of the quinone ring located about an inversion center; the 4,4'-bipyridine ligand is also centrosymmetric with the mid-point of the C-C bond linking two pyridine rings located about another invertion center. The 9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydro-anthracene-1,4,5,8-tetra-carboxyl-ate anion and bypiridine ligand bridge the Ni(II) cations, forming a polymeric chain along the b axis. π-π stacking is observed between pyridine and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.705 (2) Å]. All of the coordinating water mol-ecules are involved in O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding.

Abstract

Objective: To explore the techniques and outcomes of the surgical treatment for varicose vein., Methods: Totally 2 200 patients with varicose vein received surgical treatment in our hospital from July 2000 to January 2006. The latest techniques for endovenous occlusion were used for most cases, among which 1 802 cases were treated with endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) combined with transilluminated powered phlebectomy (TIPP), 82 cases with radiofrequency endovenous occlusion (RFO) combined with TIPP, and 218 cases with limited invaginated vein stripping and foam sclerotherapy. The remaining 98 cases were treated with laser, radiofrequency or ligation for saphenous vein trunk, and with resection, electric coagulation, and transfixation for vein clusters as additional methods. Perforators were also cut and ligated as well., Results: Satisfied surgical results were obtained in all cases. The average operative time was 40 minutes (range 20-78 minutes)., Conclusions: Limited invaginated vein stripping, EVLT, and RFO can be used to treat saphenous vein reflux. Surgical resection, transfixation, electric coagulation, and sclerotherapy are reasonable options for vein cluster or tributaries. Transection and ligation of the perforators are important. TIPP is ideal for the treatment of vein clusters.

Abstract

Objective: To explore the effective and safety of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in the treatment of severe stenosis of internal carotid artery., Methods: The clinical data of 95 patients with internal carotid artery stenosis and treated by CEA in our hospital from October 1998 to October 2006 were retrospectively analyzed. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) was found in 65 patients and cerebral infarction in 21 patients before operations. Diagnoses were confirmed by selective angiography, and > 70% stenosis of internal carotid artery was found in all patients and > 95% stenosis was found in 50 patients. Stenosis or occlusion of the contralateral carotid artery was also found in 35 patients. Coronary artery stenosis was confirmed in 43 patients with preoperative coronary angiography. CEA and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) were simultaneously performed in 18 patients., Results: After the operation, the clinical symptoms significantly improved in all patients. One case experienced hypoglossal nerve injury. One patient died of heart attack during follow-up., Conclusion: CEA is an effective and safe treatment for severe stenosis of internal carotid artery.

Abstract

Objective: To observe the clinical curative effect of chronic hepatitis B treated by the four-step therapeutics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)., Methods: 120 patients with mild or moderate Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) were randomly divided into two groups: 80 patients in treatment group and 40 in control group. All enrolled cases accorded with the enroll standard. In treatment group, the patients were divided into mild moderate and severe degree of immune intervention based on the ALT level and treated with four-step therapeutics according to the dialectical theory. In control group, all patients were administered 100mg Lamivudine orally daily for two years., Results: The loss rates of HBeAg, HBV-DNA, precore mutation were 58.9%, 78.9% in treatment group respectively, and 33.3%, 38.9% in control group. There were significant defferences between them. The total effectiveness ratio of two groups has no significant difference. After the treatment, the value of HA, PCIII, IV. C,LN decreased dramatically in treatment group and the antihepatic fibrosis results of treatment group were superior to those of control group. The four-step therapeutics of TCM could improve the ALT value and the ALT value declined to normal after the virus indexes' loss. The response rate in treatment group of ALT-elevating patients was higher than those of no ALT- elevating patients., Conclusion: The four-step therapeutics of TCM is effective in treating the CHB patients.

49. Emergency department patients who leave without being seen by a doctor: the experience of a medical center in northern Taiwan.

Abstract

Background: To determine why emergency department (ED) patients leave without being seen (LWBS) by a physician and to ascertain whether they receive alternative medical care., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted of patients who left without being seen by a physician between January 1 and June 30, 1999 in a medical center ED in northern Taiwan. Medical records were reviewed for population demographics, presenting complaints, and clinic acuity rating. Follow-up telephone interviews were conducted within 3 weeks after the patient left the ED., Results: Of 74,485 registered patients, 77 (0.1%) left without being seen by a doctor, and follow-up was achieved for 39.0% (30 of 77) of these. Ninety-seven percent (75 of 77) had low acuity ratings, and 58% (45 of 77) left within 60 min after registration. The respondents cited the following 3 leading reasons for leaving: prolonged waiting times (16 of 30, 53.3%), ED appeared busy (6 of 30, 20.0%), and self-referral to the hospital outpatient department (4 of 30, 13.3%). Most respondents believed that they should have been evaluated by a physician within 60 min of presentation. About half (14/30, 46.6%) of them sought further medical care within 24 h after they left the ED., Conclusion: In our study, only 0.1% of patients who sought care in the ED left without being seen by a physician. The majority of survey respondents had a low acuity rating and left because of long waiting times. Half of the patients who left without being seen sought alternative medical care.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect of percutaneous lumbar discectomy (PLD) combined with sodium hyaluronate (SH) injection in the treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation., Methods: Forty-eight patients suffered from lumbar disc herniation were divided into two groups and treated by PLD combined with SH injection into epidural cavity (treatment group) or single PLD (control group) respectively. All patients were followed up for 24 months. The therapeutic effects in both groups were assessed and compared according to Macnab's criterion., Results: The patients in the treatment group got much more significant improvement than those in the control group, with shorter therapeutic course and more safety., Conclusion: PLD combined with SH injection into epidural cavity is more effective and safety in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation than of pure PLD.
