In Einstein-{\AE}ther theory, the Lorentz symmetry is locally broken in the high-energy regime due to the presence of the{\AE}ther field. This shall leave significant imprint on astronomical observation. In this paper, we investigate the optical appearance of two types of the static and spherically symmetric black holes in Einstein-{\AE}ther theory. Via Euler-Lagrange equation, we obtain the equations of motion of the photon and calculate the total deflection angle of the photon trajectory around the black hole. By classifying the light rays with the total number of orbits, we study the effects of coupling constants on the direct image, lensing ring, and photon ring. The features of the light trajectories are also investigated by comparing with the Einstein-{\AE}ther theory and general relativity. Moreover, we also show the explicit optical appearance of black holes surrounded by thin disk emissions with three characteristic emitted models. The results indicate that the direct image gives the main contribution to the total flux, and the lensing ring just gives a very small contribution, whereas the role of the photon ring is negligible. Recent study shows that the magnetic reconnection can serve as an efficient mechanism to extract energy from rapidly spinning black holes. In this paper, we consider the effects of the tidal charge on the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection in the backgrounds of a spinning braneworld black hole. With the increase of the tidal charge, we find that both the energies of the accelerated plasma and decelerated plasma decrease for the observer located at infinity. To achieve the purpose extracting the net energy from the black hole, the decelerated plasma should take negative energy. Then we observe that the power of the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection grows with the tidal charge. Meanwhile, the efficiency also increases with the tidal charge indicating that the spinning braneworld black hole with positive tidal charge is more efficient than the Kerr black hole. Compared with the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, the magnetic reconnection process shall have a higher power for positive tidal charge. Quasitopological electromagnetism has an important influence on the strong gravity of dyonic black hole. For example three photon spheres with one being stable are found and we wish to test them with the observed black hole shadow. We are primarily concerned with the thermodynamics and phase transition for a dyonic anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole when the quasitopological electromagnetism is included.Unlike in a black hole solution without quasitopological electromagnetism, we observe a triple point phase structure by varying the coupling parameters. Of particular interest, for certain parameter values, two separate coexistence curves are present, which is an additional novel phase structure that is absent in a black hole solution without quasitopological electromagnetism. The critical exponents share the same values as mean field theory. In the Einstein-bumblebee gravity, the Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken by a vector field. In this paper, we attempt to test the Lorentz symmetry via the observation of the shadow cast by the Kerr-like black hole with or without plasma. A novel phenomenon of the Lorentz-violating parameter on the shadow is observed. The result shows that when the observer gradually moves from the poles to the equatorial plane, the shadow radius $R_{\rm s}$ firstly decreases and then increases with the Lorentz-violating parameter. Such nonmonotonic behavior provides us an important understanding on the black hole shadow in the Einstein-bumblebee gravity. Besides, three more distortion observables are calculated, and found to increase with the Lorentz-violating parameter. Moreover, when a homogeneous plasma is present, the motion of the photon is analyzed. We further observe that the refractive index shrinks the size, while enhances the deformation of the shadow. Finally, adopting the observed data of the diameter of M87$^*$, we find the refractive index is more favored in (0.914, 1)., Comment: 16 pages and 10 figures

In this paper, we extend the study of the relationship between the photon sphere and the thermodynamic phase transition, especially the reentrant phase transition, to this black hole background. According to the number of the thermodynamic critical points, the black hole systems are divided into four cases with different values of Born-Infeld parameter b, where the black hole systems can have no phase transition, reentrant phase transition, or Van der Waals-like phase transition. For these different cases, we obtain the corresponding phase structures in pressure-temperature diagram and temperature-specific volume diagram. The tiny differences between these cases are clearly displayed. On the other hand, the radius rps and the minimal impact parameter ups of the photon sphere are calculated via the effective potential of the radial motion of photons. For different cases, rps and ups are found to have different behaviors. In particular, with the increase of rps or ups, the temperature possesses a decrease-increase-decrease-increase behavior for fixed pressure if there exists the reentrant phase transition. While for fixed temperature, the pressure will show an increase-decrease-increase-decrease behavior instead. These behaviors are quite different from that of the Van der Waals-like phase transition. Near the critical point, the changes of rps and ups among the black hole phase transition confirm an universal critical exponent 12. Therefore, all the results indicate that, for the charged Born-Infeld-AdS black holes, not only the Van der Waals-like phase transition, but also the reentrant phase transition can be reflected through the photon sphere., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, and 3 tables. In this paper, the shadows cast by non-rotating and rotating modified gravity black holes are investigated. In addition to the black hole spin parameter $a$ and the inclination angle $\theta$ of observer, another parameter $\alpha$ measuring the deviation of gravitational constant from the Newton one is also found to affect the shape of the black hole shadow. The result shows that, for fixed values of $a/M$ and $\theta$, the size and perimeter of the shadows cast by the non-rotating and rotating black holes significantly increase with the parameter $\alpha$, while the distortions decrease with $\alpha$. Moreover, the energy emission rate of the black hole in high energy case is also investigated, and the result shows that the peak of the emission rate decreases with the parameter $\alpha$., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures
