Nalfurafine, a moderately selective kappa opioid receptor (KOR) agonist, is used in Japan for treatment of itch without causing dysphoria or psychotomimesis. Here we characterized the pharmacology of compound 42B, a 3-dehydroxy analogue of nalfurafine and compared with that of nalfurafine. Nalfurafine and 42B acted as full KOR agonists and partial μ opioid receptor (MOR) agonists, but 42B showed much lower potency for both receptors and lower KOR/MOR selectivity, different from previous reports. Molecular modeling revealed that water-mediated hydrogen-bond formation between 3-OH of nalfurafine and KOR accounted for its higher KOR potency than 42B. The higher potency of both at KOR over MOR may be due to hydrogen-bond formation between nonconserved Y7.35 of KOR and their carbonyl groups. Both showed modest G protein signaling biases. In mice, like nalfurafine, 42B produced antinociceptive and antiscratch effects and did not cause conditioned place aversion (CPA) in the effective dose ranges. Unlike nalfurafine, 42B caused motor incoordination and hypolocomotion. As both agonists showed G protein biases, yet produced different effects on locomotor activity and motor incoordination, the findings and those in the literature suggest caution in correlating in vitro biochemical data with in vivo behavior effects. The factors contributing to the disconnect, including pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic issues, are discussed. In addition, our results suggest that among the KOR-induced adverse behaviors, CPA can be separated from motor incoordination and hypolocomotion.

The Tropical Cloud Oscillation (TCO) in the Martian atmosphere is a shift of clouds in the northern spring and summer tropical cloud belt between the eastern and western hemispheres on an intra‐seasonal timescale of about 10–40 sols. The TCO is a significant intraseasonal variation and may strongly affect the Martian general circulation, water cycle, and dust cycle. We examine TCOs using multiple data sets with a focus on the clouds observed in Mars Daily Global Maps during Mars Year (MY) 29–35. One or more TCO cycles are observed in each MY and the phenomenon is most prominent during Ls = 135°–185°. Space‐time spectral analysis shows a variety of waves which appear to follow the theoretical dispersion relationships of equatorial waves, such as Kelvin waves, Rossby waves, and Mixed Rossby Gravity waves. The TCO appears to be controlled by zonal wavenumber one traveling waves with Kelvin and Rossby wave characteristics and exhibits a fine‐scale latitudinal structure that requires modeling with sufficient resolution. Issues with current data assimilation products for use in studies of Martian equatorial waves due to this fine‐scale structure are discussed. Plain Language Summary: During martian northern spring and summer, a relatively thick water ice cloud belt is observed in the tropics (approximately 25°S–25°N), which modifies large‐scale circulation, global water transport and the atmospheric dust cycle. We report on a Tropical Cloud Oscillation (TCO) that is a periodic shift in the thickness of this cloud belt between the eastern and western hemispheres on timescales (about 10–40 Mars days) longer than that of weather but shorter than that of seasons. Since the TCO involves changes in clouds and implies changes in circulation, it may also modulate the dust and water cycles. We examine TCOs using image data for Mars Year 29–35 (late 2007 through early 2021). One or more TCO cycles are observed in each Mars Year and the phenomenon is most prominent in late northern summer. A wide variety of atmospheric waves are found during TCOs; however, the most important are equatorial waves traveling eastward and westward with one peak and one trough around the planet. These waves have narrow latitudinal length scales and thus require high resolution numerical models to simulate and properly represent in data assimilation products. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) built on inorganic anodes have achieved great commercial success. By contrast, the practical application of organic anode materials encounters key bottlenecks including electronic insulation, high solubility, and poor initial coulombic efficiency (ICE). Among them, improving ICEs (normally 30–60%) faces enormous challenges in both theory and technology, and there has been no substantial breakthrough yet. Herein, a wet chemical pretreatment technology to increase the ICE of maleic acid (MA)‐based anodes from 43.2% to nearly 100% is proposed for the first time, and this strategy demonstrates universal applicability. Typically, the wet chemical pretreatment involves reacting with lithium‐biphenyl to form LixMA intermediates (x = 4–6) and further forming a compact artificial solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) film through the spontaneous reaction between active LixMA and battery organic electrolytes. This wet chemically‐constructed artificial SEI layer can almost completely suppress lithium loss in the initial cycle of the MA electrode and significantly boost the actual output energy density, rate capability, and cycling durability of MA anode‐based full batteries. Significantly, the study further demonstrated that a series of organic anode materials with high ICEs can be achieved through similar wet chemical pretreatment. This study presents new glyoxal (CHOCHO) products from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) by utilizing updated level 1B irradiance/radiance data (Collection 4) and an updated glyoxal retrieval algorithm. The adoption of Collection 4 contributes to the reduction of artificial signals in differential glyoxal slant column densities (dSCDs) and improved fitting root mean square, and the updated retrieval settings result in fewer negative values of glyoxal dSCDs over oceans and less noisy dSCDs in the South Atlantic Anomaly. On‐line calculations of air mass factors consider interactive physical processes between input parameters. To address persistent trends in glyoxal SCDs over the Pacific Ocean that remain despite these updates, a trend correction is implemented. We evaluate the updated OMI glyoxal products using inter‐comparisons with GOME‐2A/2B glyoxal products. OMI glyoxal products exhibit good spatial and temporal agreement with GOME‐2A/2B, with correlation coefficients of 0.75–0.78 globally and 0.84–0.85 over source regions. Small biases are observed in OMI glyoxal vertical column densities, ranging from −0.2 ± 5.7% to 9 ± 3% in low and high glyoxal conditions, respectively, against GOME‐2A/2B. These advancements contribute to the reliability and accuracy of OMI glyoxal products, enhancing their utility for atmospheric studies and enabling a 20‐year‐long data record suitable for climate studies. For new glyoxal products, we use the updated OMI irradiance/radiance data and update the way we analyze the radiance data. The new data matches well with similar data from other satellite instruments (GOME‐2A/B), showing that the improvements are effective. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the dominant pattern of sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Pacific basin, is an important low-frequency climate phenomenon. Leveraging data spanning from 1871 to 2010, we employed machine learning models to predict the PDO based on variations in several climatic indices: the Niño3.4, North Pacific index (NPI), sea surface height (SSH), and thermocline depth over the Kuroshio–Oyashio Extension (KOE) region (SSH_KOE and Ther_KOE), as well as the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). A comparative analysis of the temporal and spatial performance of six machine learning models was conducted, revealing that the Gated Recurrent Unit model demonstrated superior predictive capabilities compared to its counterparts, through the temporal and spatial analysis. To better understand the inner workings of the machine learning models, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) was adopted to present the drivers behind the model's predictions and dynamics for modeling the PDO. Our findings indicated that the Niño3.4, North Pacific index, and SSH_KOE were the three most pivotal features in predicting the PDO. Furthermore, our analysis also revealed that the Niño3.4, AMO, and Ther_KOE indices were positively associated with the PDO, whereas the NPI, SSH_KOE, and AO indices exhibited negative correlations. Quantifying the global bromine monoxide (BrO) budget is essential to understand ozone chemistry better. In particular, the tropospheric BrO budget has not been well characterized. Here, we retrieve nearly a decade (February 2012–July 2021) of stratospheric and tropospheric BrO vertical columns from the Ozone Mapping and Profiling Suite Nadir Mapper (OMPS-NM) on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite. In quantifying tropospheric BrO enhancements from total slant columns, the key aspects involve segregating them from stratospheric enhancements and applying appropriate air mass factors. To address this concern and improve upon the existing methods, our study proposes an approach that applies distinct BrO vertical profiles based on the presence or absence of tropospheric BrO enhancement at each pixel, identifying it dynamically using a satellite-derived stratospheric-ozone–BrO relationship. We demonstrate good agreement for both stratosphere (r = 0.81–0.83) and troposphere (r = 0.50–0.70) by comparing monthly mean BrO vertical columns from OMPS-NM with ground-based observations from three stations (Lauder, Utqiaġvik, and Harestua). Although algorithm performance is primarily assessed at high latitudes, the OMPS-NM BrO retrievals successfully capture tropospheric enhancements not only in polar regions but also in extrapolar areas, such as the Rann of Kutch and the Great Salt Lake. We also estimate random uncertainties in the retrievals pixel by pixel, which can assist in quantitative applications of the OMPS-NM BrO dataset. Our BrO retrieval algorithm is designed for cross-sensor applications and can be adapted to other space-borne ultraviolet spectrometers, contributing to the creation of continuous long-term satellite BrO observation records.
