[Display omitted] Household consumption in China is associated with substantial PM 2.5 pollution, through activities directly (i.e., fuel use) and/or indirectly (i.e., consumption of goods and services) causing pollutant emissions. Urban and rural households exhibit different consumption preferences and living areas, thus their contributions to and suffering from air pollution could differ. Assessing this contrast is crucial for comprehending the environmental impacts of the nation's ongoing urbanization process. Here we quantify Chinese urban and rural households' contributions to ambient PM 2.5 pollution and the health risks they suffer from, by integrating economic, atmospheric, and health models and/or datasets. The national premature deaths related to long-term exposure to PM 2.5 pollution contributed by total household consumption are estimated to be 1.1 million cases in 2015, among which 56% are urban households and 44% are rural households. For pollution contributed indirectly, urban households, especially in developed provinces, tend to bear lower mortality risks compared with the portions of deaths or pollution they contribute. The opposite results are true for direct pollution. With China's rapid urbanization process, without adequate reduction in emission intensity, the increased indirect pollution-associated premature deaths could largely offset that avoided by reduced direct pollution, and the indirect pollution-associated urban–rural inequalities might become severer. Developing pollution mitigation strategies from both production and consumption sides could help with reducing pollution-related mortality and associated urban–rural inequality. Objective. Image segmentation technology is applied to separate a single vertebra from the three-dimensional model of the spine, so as to separate a single vertebra image with smaller error, higher degree of automation, and better results. The objectives are to study the biomechanical characteristics of posterior short-segment pedicle screw fixation by three-dimensional finite element method, analyze the mechanical characteristics of posterior pedicle screw rod fixation system under different factors, and demonstrate the feasibility of its application in the treatment of lumbar fracture. Methods. The authors searched the database for articles about the treatment of lumbar spine fracture, screw rod internal fixation system, and its mechanical parameters. The threshold segmentation method based on region segmentation method was used to segment the image, and the three-dimensional finite element model was used to analyze the biomechanical characteristics of different posterior internal fixation for lumbar spine fracture. Results. The posterior pedicle internal fixation system for the treatment of multilevel spinal fractures is a mature surgical technique and has fewer postoperative complications. Transpedicle fixation is effective and reliable. It can effectively restore the coronal and sagittal curvature of the vertebral body and restore the stability of the spine better. But the choice of internal fixation method should be individualized based on fracture type, identification of critical and secondary injury sites, and stability assessment. Only after mastering the biomechanical characteristics of the posterior screw rod system for the treatment of lumbar fracture, selecting the appropriate method, and fixing the appropriate movement unit can the best fixation be achieved. Conclusion. Threshold method is the most direct and simple image segmentation method. The core technology of thresholding is the selection of threshold, which will affect the final segmentation effect. The most common segmentation method is to calculate the segmentation threshold by histogram. The threshold method has less computation and good segmentation effect for the image with large contrast between background and target. Posterior pedicle screw rod system internal fixation has the advantages of less trauma, good reduction, reliable fixation, and less complications. The design, placement angle and depth of various internal fixation systems, and the number of fixed segments all show different mechanical characteristics. As long as we master the above characteristics, choose the appropriate method and fix the appropriate motor unit, and we can get the best fixation; it can be used as an effective treatment for lumbar fracture. Objective. To explore the application value of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and GSI-energy spectrum electronic computed tomography (CT) medical imaging based on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) in the treatment of lumbar degenerative disease and osteoporosis. Methods. There were 56 cases of suspected lumbar degenerative disease and osteoporosis. A group of 56 subjects were examined using 1.5 TMR spectrum (MRS) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to collect the lumbar L3 vertebral body fat ratio (FF) and L1~4 vertebral bone mineral density (BMD) value. We divided the subjects into 2 groups with T value -2.5 as the critical point. Set T value > -2.5 as the negative group and T value ≤ -2.5 as the positive group. Pearson's method is used for FF-MRS and BMD correlation analyses. A group of all patients underwent GSI-energy spectrum CT scan, and X-ray bone mineral density (DXA) test results (bone density per unit area) were used as the gold standard to analyze the diagnosis of osteoporosis by the GSI-energy spectrum CT scan method value. Results. The differences in FF and BMD between the negative group and the positive group were statistically significant (P < 0.01), and there was a highly negative correlation between the average value of FF and BMD. 30 cases were diagnosed as osteoporosis by DXA. The accuracy of GSI-energy spectrum CT medical imaging in diagnosing osteoporosis is 89.30%. The GSI-energy spectrum CT diagnosis of osteoporosis and DXA examination results have good consistency. Conclusion. Based on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) MRS technology, GSI-energy spectrum CT medical imaging is used in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of lumbar degenerative lesions and osteoporosis. In order to combat environmental pollution, China enacted the Environmental Protection Tax Law in early 2018. Yet the impacts of the environmental tax on individual regions with different socioeconomic statuses, which are crucial for social justice and public acceptance, remain unclear. Based on a Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) table and a nationally regulated tax payment calculation method, this study analyzes the distributional impacts of an environmental tax based upon province's consumption from both inter-provincial and rural-urban aspects. The national tax revenue based on the current levy mechanism is estimated to be only one seventh of the economic loss from premature mortality caused by ambient particulate matter (PM 2.5). The taxation may slightly alleviate urban-rural inequality but may not be helpful with reducing inter-provincial inequality. We further analyze two alternative levy mechanisms. If each province imposes taxes to products it consumes (rather than produces, as in the current mechanism), with the tax rate linearly dependent on its per capita consumption expenditure, this would moderately increase the national tax revenue and significantly reduce inter-provincial inequality. To better compensate for the economic costs of air pollution and reduce regional inequality, it would be beneficial to increase the tax rate nationwide and implement a levy mechanism based on provincially differentiated levels of consumption and economic status. As one of the basic treatment modalities in the intensive care unit (ICU), mechanical ventilation can cause or aggravate acute lung injury or ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is an endogenous polyunsaturated fatty acid derivative with strong anti-inflammatory action. In this study, we explored if RvD1 possesses a protective effect on VILI. Mice were ventilated with high tidal volume (40 mL/kg, HVT) for 4 h and were then intraperitoneally administered RvD1 at the beginning of high tidal volume ventilation and given GW9662 (a PPAR-γ antagonist) intraperitoneally 30 min before ventilation. RvD1 attenuated VILI, as evidenced by improved oxygenation and reduced histological injury, compared with HVT -induced lung injury. Similarly, it could ameliorate neutrophil accumulation and production of proinflammatory cytokines in lung tissue. In contrast, the protective effect of RvD1 on lung tissue could be reversed by GW9662. RvD1 mitigated VILI by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) and inhibiting nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways in mice. Abstract There exist substantial differences in top-of-atmosphere direct radiative forcing of aerosols due to a region's economic production (RF p) and consumption (RF c), in the context of economic globalization, trade and globalizing air pollution. Yet an explicit systematic analysis of all socioeconomic and atmospheric factors determining the RF difference is lacking. Here, we evaluate five socioeconomic (population, per capita output, emission intensity) and atmospheric (chemical efficiency and radiative efficiency) factors that determine a region's RF p , RF c and their difference. We consider the RF of secondary inorganic aerosols, primary organic aerosols and black carbon by 10 regions worldwide in 2007. The population size varies by a factor of nine across the regions, and per capita output by 40 times from both production- and consumption-based perspectives. The cross-regional spread reaches a factor of 181 (species dependent) for production-based emission intensity and a factor of 96 for consumption-based intensity. From one region to another, production-based chemical efficiency changes within a factor of 5 and consumption-based efficiency within a factor of 3.5. Radiative efficiency varies slightly across the regions (within 2) from both production- and consumption-based perspectives. Although socioeconomic factors are often a greater driver for the difference between a source region's RF p and RF c , the atmospheric factors are also important for many source regions and species. Our results contribute to regional attribution of climate change and establishment of effective international collaborative mitigation strategies. Remotely-sensed Leaf Area Index (LAI) is vital to describe the vegetation canopy and assess plant growth condition and healthy status. However, sufficient instant ground LAI samples are pre-required for calibration or validation, which is generally difficult to collect. We proposed a method, LAI-Mobile, to use mobile phones with low-cost fisheye lens to take fisheye photos and to invert LAIs, which may be popularized for ordinary people to generate big volume of LAI sample data. The feasibility of LAI-Mobile was tested by comparing with LAI−2200 and GF-1 satellite data (GF = high resolution) in a pest-invaded Yunnan pine forest area in Yunnan province of China. Results show significant correlation between LAI-2200 and LAI-Mobile data for forest plots with coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.706 and Root Mean Square Error (RSME) = 0.241, and GF-1 satellite images (R2 = 0.659 and RMSE = 0.268). The linear regression shows a good agreement between the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI product and the inverted GF-1 LAI, withR2 = 0.649, RMSE = 0.795. Despite larger uncertainty for single fisheye image than LAI-2200, LAI-mobile can provide fast and convenient method to collect large amount of LAI, which will support remote sensing inversion of LAI at large scale. The trajectory and adhesion behavior of droplets in air-assisted pesticide spraying in greenhouse are closely related with several factors: the velocity field and pressure field of the airflow, the droplets properties (such as droplet size, initial velocity), the spraying angle, as well as the target parameters (such as shape, size and position). This study explored the conditions that influenced the droplets carried by airflow, with a keen emphasis on whether it could touch, instead of going around, and stay on the target. A CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model was introduced for droplet trajectory simulation in an airflow field, in which droplets were traced by discrete phase particle tracking method. A computation region of 1600, 720 and 1000 mm respectively in streamwise, spanwise and normalwise was established. A target with the dimension of 120 mm x 120 mm x 30 mm was placed 400 mm above ground and 840 mm away from the left boundary of the computational domain. To simplify computational complexity, only half of the computational region (1600 mm x 360 mm x 1000 mm) was computed since the whole region was symmetric on both sides of the sprayer in streamwise. The grid number of the actual computation domain was about 0.36 million. A local mesh encryption method was applied around the target in order to increase the resolution of the simulation. The particle diameters involved in this simulation were 10, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 100 µm; and the injection angles were adjusted to 90°, 75°, 60°, 45°, 30° and 15° respectively. A discrete phase boundary condition was set which trapped the droplets on the ground (wall) or the target surfaces. The rest of boundaries for discrete phase were set to boundary condition of droplet escaping. The influences of droplet velocity, droplet size and injection angle on deposition rate were evaluated by the CFD simulation and the experiments proved that: the condition of a droplet touching and adhering on target was that the maximum moving time of droplets in x and y direction should be simultaneously longer than the maximum moving time of droplets in z direction in the region around the target. There was a region below the target where droplets could not reach while spraying, and the length of the region was related to spraying angle. The adhesion behavior of droplets was affected by air velocity and droplet size. When the droplet size was 50 µm and spraying angle was 60°, the larger the spraying velocity, the lower the deposition rate. The comparison of the deposition rates from simulations and experiments proves that the experiment data agree well with the data from simulation, so the simulation can be taken as reliable and valid measure in droplet deposition evaluation under greenhouse condition. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the main cause of pain and disability in the elderly. It is reported that circular RNA BRMS1L (BRMS1 like transcriptional repressor) (circBRMS1L) is upregulated in the synovial fluid of OA patients. Nevertheless, the biological function of circBRMS1L in OA has not been validated. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced chondrocytes (C28/I2) were used as OA cell models in vitro. Expression patterns of circBRMS1L, microRNA (miR)-142-5p, and Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4) mRNA were verified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Loss-of-function experiments were performed to explore the influence of circBRMS1L on LPS-induced extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, apoptosis, and inflammation in C28/I2 cells. Protein levels were detected by western blotting. The regulatory mechanism of circBRMS1L in OA was explored by bioinformatics analysis, dual-luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation, and/or RNA pull-down assays. CircBRMS1L was prominently upregulated in OA cartilage tissues and LPS-stimulated C28/I2 cells. Inhibition of circBRMS1L reduced LPS-induced ECM degradation, apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in C28/I2 cells. MiR-142-5p was downregulated while TLR4 was upregulated in OA cartilage tissues and LPS-stimulated C28/I2 cells. CircBRMS1L adsorbed miR-142-5p to regulate TLR4 expression. MiR-142-5p inhibitor reversed circBRMS1L silencing-mediated effects on LPS-induced ECM degradation, apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in C28/I2 cells. TLR4 elevation overturned the inhibitory influence of miR-142-5p mimic on LPS-induced ECM degradation, apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in C28/I2 cells. Notably, circBRMS1L activated the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway by the miR-142-5p/TLR4 axis. LPS-induced ECM degradation, apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress in chondrocytes were at least partially regulated by the circBRMS1L/miR-142-5p/TLR4/NF-κB pathway, highlighting a new mechanism responsible for OA advancement. Paddy fields serve as significant reservoirs of soil organic carbon (SOC) and their potential for terrestrial carbon (C) sequestration is closely associated with changes in SOC pools. However, there has been a dearth of comprehensive studies quantifying changes in SOC pools following extended periods of rice cultivation across a broad geographical scale. Using 104 rice paddy sampling sites that have been in continuous cultivation since the 1980s across China, we studied the changes in topsoil (0–20 cm) labile organic C (LOC I), semi‐labile organic C (LOC II), recalcitrant organic C (ROC), and total SOC. We found a substantial increase in both the content (48%) and density (39%) of total SOC within China's paddy fields between the 1980s to the 2010s. Intriguingly, the rate of increase in content and density of ROC exceeded that of LOC (I and II). Using a structural equation model, we revealed that changes in the content and density of total SOC were mainly driven by corresponding shifts in ROC, which are influenced both directly and indirectly by climatic and soil physicochemical factors; in particular temperature, precipitation, phosphorous (P) and clay content. We also showed that the δ13CLOC were greater than δ13CROC, independent of the rice cropping region, and that there was a significant positive correlation between δ13CSOC and δ13Cstraw. The δ13CLOC and δ13CSOC showed significantly negative correlation with soil total Si, suggesting that soil Si plays a part in the allocation of C into different SOC pools, and its turnover or stabilization. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a severe inflammatory auto‐immune disorder affecting millions of people across the globe. The current therapeutic options are not adequate to address the complications of RA. Therefore, the present study was conducted to elucidate the protective effect of lariciresinol, a lignan, against Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)‐induced arthritis in rats. The results of the study showed that lariciresinol improves paw swelling and arthritic scores in rats as compared to CFA rats. Lariciresinol also showed a significant reduction in rheumatoid factor, C‐reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor‐α, interleukin (IL)‐17, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases‐3 level with a simultaneous increase in IL‐4 level. The burden of oxidative stress was also reduced in CFA rats, as shown by reduced MDA levels and increased SOD and GPx after the administration of lariciresinol. In a Western blot analysis, lariciresinol showed a significant reduction of transforming growth factor‐β and nuclear factor‐κB (NF‐κB) protein levels in CFA rats. To understand the binding characteristic of lariciresinol with NF‐κB, molecular docking analysis was conducted, which showed Larciresinol interacted with the active site of NF‐κB. Cinnamomum burmannii (Nees & T. Nees) Blume is a cinnamon species used for daily needs and as an herb in traditional medicine. This study was designed to determine the composition, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of essential oils (EOs) extracted from different organs of the plant. The gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed that the bark was dominated by 1-isopropyl-4,7-dimethyl-1,2,3,5,6,8a-hexahydronaphthalene (11.60%), γ-muurolene (8.79%), eucalyptol (7.66%), α-muurolene (7.37%), α-terpineol (6.65%), δ-selinene (6.42%), while endo-borneol (41.74 and 40.60%), caryophyllene (6.29 and 10.43%), and bornyl acetate (4.18 and 4.08%) were the primary components of branch and leaf oils. Additionally, a notable antioxidant power of the bark, branch and leaf essential oil was observed from the results of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging activity (0.03-0.05 mg/mL), antiradical power (ARP) (19.61-32.26), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity assay (0.40-0.75 mol/g), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (0.30-0.66 mg Fe2+/g). Branches and leaves had stronger antioxidant activity, and endo-borneol, bornyl acetate, humulene and cedrene were the main contributors to the antioxidant activity. Moreover, the bark showed notable inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus, while the leaf oil had good antibacterial activity against Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas putida. Low- and medium-resolution satellites have been a relatively mature platform for inland eutrophic water classification and chlorophyll a concentration (Chl-a) retrieval algorithms. However, for oligotrophic and mesotrophic waters in small- and medium-sized reservoirs, problems of low satellite resolution, insufficient water sampling, and higher uncertainty in retrieval accuracy exist. In this paper, a hybrid Chl-a estimation method based on spectral characteristics (i.e., remote sensing reflectance (Rrs)) classification was developed for oligotrophic and mesotrophic waters using high-resolution satellite Sentinel-2 (A and B) data. First, 99 samples and quasi-synchronous Sentinel-2 satellite data were collected from four small- and medium-sized reservoirs in central China, and the usability of the Sentinel-2 Rrs data in inland oligotrophic and mesotrophic waters was verified by accurate atmospheric correction. Second, a new optical classification method was constructed based on different water characteristics to classify waters into clear water, phytoplankton-dominated water, and water dominated by phytoplankton and suspended matter together using the thresholds of Rrs490/Rrs560 and Rrs665/Rrs560. The proposed method has a higher classification accuracy compared to other classification methods, and the band-ratio algorithm is simpler and more effective for satellite sensors without NIR bands. Third, given the sensitivity of the empirical method to water variability and the ease of development and implementation, a nonlinear least squares fitted one-dimensional nonlinear function was established based on the selection of the best-fitting spectral indices for different optical water types (OWTs) and compared with other Chl-a estimation algorithms. The validation results showed that the hybrid two-band method had the highest accuracy with squared correlation coefficient, root mean squared difference, mean absolute percentage error, and bias of 0.85, 2.93, 32.42%, and −0.75 mg/m3, respectively, and the results of the residual values further validated the applicability and reliability of the model. Finally, the performance of the classification and estimation algorithms on the four reservoirs was evaluated to obtain images mapping the Chl-a in the reservoirs. In conclusion, this study improves the accuracy of Chl-a estimation for oligotrophic and mesotrophic waters by combining a new classification algorithm with a two-band hybrid model, which is an important contribution to solving the problem of low resolution and high uncertainty in the retrieval of Chl-a in oligotrophic and mesotrophic waters in small- and medium-sized reservoirs and has the potential to be applied to other optically similar oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes and reservoirs using similar spectrally satellite sensors. The inappropriate apoptosis of macrophages plays an important role in the pathogenesis of sepsis-induced acute lung injury, however, the detailed regulatory mechanisms remain largely unknown. As an endogenous apoptosis pathway, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays an important role in cell damage in patients with sepsis. Clarifying the ER stress response and its effect on macrophages during the development of sepsis is helpful to explore new strategies for the prevention and treatment of ALI in sepsis. The mouse model and the RAW264.7 inflammation model were stimulated with LPS to establish in vivo and in vitro. We explored the effects of different expression levels of silent information regulator factor 2-related enzyme 1 (SIRT1) on the ER stress response and apoptosis of macrophages in the sepsis-related injury model. Our studies found that the increased expression of SIRT1 can significantly improve sepsis-related lung injury and relieve lung inflammation. SRT1720, a SIRT1 activator, can significantly inhibit the ER stress response of lung tissue and macrophages, inhibit the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins, promote the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins, and reduce macrophages of apoptosis. While the EX527, an inhibitor of SIRT1, had the opposite effect. SIRT1 can significantly improve sepsis-associated lung injury and LPS-induced macrophage apoptosis. This protective effect is closely related to its inhibition of the ER stress response via the PERK/eIF2-α/ATF4/CHOP pathway. • SIRT1 can significantly inhibit excessive inflammation response in sepsis-associated lung injury. • SIRT1 can obviously inhibit the expression of pro-apoptosis-related proteins and promote the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins in sepsis-associated lung injury. • SIRT1 can effectively reduce LPS-induced apoptosis of macrophages via inhibiting the ER stress. We present a new divergence method to estimated methane (CH4) emissions from satellite observed mean mixing ratio of methane (XCH4) by deriving the regional enhancement of XCH4 in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). The applicability is proven by comparing the estimated emissions with its known emission inventory from a 3‐month GEOS‐Chem simulation. When applied to TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument observations, sources from well‐known oil/gas production areas, livestock farms and wetlands in Texas become clearly visible in the emission maps. The calculated yearly averaged total CH4 emission over the Permian Basin is 3.06 (2.82, 3.78) Tg a−1 for 2019, which is consistent with previous studies and double that of EDGAR v4.3.2 for 2012. Sensitivity tests on PBL heights, on the derived regional background and on wind speeds suggest our divergence method is quite robust. It is also a fast and simple method to estimate the CH4 emissions globally. Sepsis-associated acute lung injury (ALI) is a clinically critical disease that carries a high mortality rate. The pathogenesis of sepsis-associated ALI has not yet been precisely elucidated and there is a lack of effective treatment. As a new endogenous docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-derived lipid mediators, Maresin1 has a significant dual role of anti-inflammatory and promoting inflammation regression. In this study, we established the sepsis model by the cecal ligation and puncture method (CLP) to explore the effect of Maresin1 on sepsis-induced lung injury. We found that the intervention of Maresin1 could significantly attenuate the sepsis-induced inflammatory responses, characterized by the down-regulation of the level of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, MPO, etc. Maresin1 could also significantly decrease the number of neutrophils in lung tissue, thus improving the related lung injury indicators. Our experiment clarified that the protective effect of Maresin1 on sepsis-associated lung injury is closely related to its inhibition function of JAK2/STAT3 and MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathways. We present a new product with explicit aerosol corrections, POMINO-TROPOMI, for tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) vertical column densities (VCDs) over East Asia, based on the newly launched TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument with an unprecedented high horizontal resolution. Compared to the official TM5-MP-DOMINO (OFFLINE) product, POMINO-TROPOMI shows stronger concentration gradients near emission source locations and better agrees with MAX-DOAS measurements (R2=0.75 ; NMB=0.8 % versus R2=0.68 , NMB=-41.9 %). Sensitivity tests suggest that implicit aerosol corrections, as in TM5-MP-DOMINO, lead to underestimations of NO2 columns by about 25 % over the polluted northern East China region. Reducing the horizontal resolution of a priori NO2 profiles would underestimate the retrieved NO2 columns over isolated city clusters in western China by 35 % but with overestimates of more than 50 % over many offshore coastal areas. Using the Community Earth System Model (CESM) version 1.2, this study investigates the changes in secondary inorganic aerosols (SIOAs) over the Northern Hemisphere from 1850 to 2007, regional contributions, and consequences on surface air temperature. Results show that SIOAs changes can be divided into two stages. At the first stage (1850–1980), European and North American SIOAs concentrations increase, with a cooling effect especially over Europe and Eastern Siberia. At the second stage (1980–2007), SIOAs concentrations over Europe and North America are reduced with a warming effect in the mid-high latitudes, whereas SIOAs increase over East Asia and South Asia leading to a cooling effect there. The temperature changes over the emission source regions are mainly driven by radiative forcing. Horizontal transfer of heat leads to a temperature response in the Siberian region. In recent years, the outbreak of the pine shoot beetle (PSB), Tomicus spp., has caused serious shoots damage and the death of millions of trees in Yunnan pine forests in southwestern China. It is urgent to develop a convincing approach to accurately assess the shoot damage ratio (SDR) for monitoring the PSB insects at an early stage. Unmanned airborne vehicles (UAV)-based sensors, including hyperspectral imaging (HI) and lidar, have very high spatial and spectral resolutions, which are very useful to detect forest health. However, very few studies have utilized HI and lidar data to estimate SDRs and compare the predictive power for mapping PSB damage at the individual tree level. Additionally, the data fusion of HI and lidar may improve the detection accuracy, but it has not been well studied. In this study, UAV-based HI and lidar data were fused to detect PSB. We systematically evaluated the potential of a hyperspectral approach (only-HI data), a lidar approach (only-lidar data), and a combined approach (HI plus lidar data) to characterize PSB damage of individual trees using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm, separately. The most innovative point is the proposed new method to extract the three dimensional (3D) shadow distribution of each tree crown based on a lidar point cloud and the 3D radiative transfer model RAPID. The results show that: (1) for the accuracy of estimating the SDR of individual trees, the lidar approach (R2 = 0.69, RMSE = 12.28%) performed better than hyperspectral approach (R2 = 0.67, RMSE = 15.87%), and in addition, it was useful to detect dead trees with an accuracy of 70%; (2) the combined approach has the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.83, RMSE = 9.93%) for mapping PSB damage degrees; and (3) when combining HI and lidar data to predict SDRs, two variables have the most contributions, which are the leaf chlorophyll content (Cab) derived from hyperspectral data and the return intensity of the top of shaded crown (Int_Shd_top) from lidar metrics. This study confirms the high possibility to accurately predict SDRs at individual tree level if combining HI and lidar data. The 3D radiative transfer model can determine the 3D crown shadows from lidar, which is a key information to combine HI and lidar. Therefore, our study provided a guidance to combine the advantages of hyperspectral and lidar data to accurately measure the health of individual trees, enabling us to prioritize areas for forest health promotion. Seven scenarios were designed to study the national environmental benefits of ULE in coal-fired power plants (CPPs), ULE in industrial coal burning (ICB) and NH3 emission reduction by using the GEOS-Chem model. The results showed that although the CPPs have achieved the ULE transformation target, the PM2.5 concentration across the country has decreased by 4.8% (1.4 μg/m3). Due to the complex non-linear chemical competition mechanism among nitrate and sulfate, the average concentration of nitrate in the country has increased by 1.5% (0.1 μg/m3), which has reduced the environmental benefits of the power plant emission reduction. If the ULE technology is applied to the ICB to further reduce NOx and SO2, although the PM2.5 concentration can be reduced by 10.1% (2.9 μg/m3), the concentration of nitrate will increase by 2.7% (0.2 μg/m3). Based on the CPPs-ULE, NH3 emissions reduced by 30% and 50% can significantly reduce the concentration of ammonium and nitrate, so that the PM2.5 concentration is decreased by 11.5% (3.3 μg/m3) and 16.5% (4.7 μg/m3). Similarly, based on the CPPs-ICB-ULE, NH3 emissions can be reduced by 30% and 50% and the PM2.5 concentration reduced by 15.6% (4.4 μg/m3) and 20.3% (5.8 μg/m3). The CPPs and ICB use the ULE technology to reduce NOx and SO2, thereby reducing the concentration of ammonium and sulfate, causing the PM2.5 concentration to decline, and NH3 reduction is mainly achieved through reducing the concentration of ammonium and nitrate to reduce the concentration of PM2.5. In order to better reduce the concentration of PM2.5, NOx, SO2 and NH3 emission reduction control measures should be comprehensively considered in different regions of China. As a significant forest disturbance factor, pine shoot beetles (PSB) have caused widespread tree mortality in Yunnan pine forests over southwestern China. Due to significant vertical heterogeneity of tree crowns, empirical remote sensing methods or one-dimensional (1D) radiative transfer (RT) models are not qualified enough to accurately retrieve the damage level of PSB damage. Therefore, three-dimensional (3D) RT models which have the ability to describe vertically complex heterogeneous canopies are more suitable for the damaged forests. In this study, shoot dieback ratio (SDR) was used to parameterize the Radiosity Applicable to Porous IndiviDual Objects (RAPID) model, in order to accurately estimate the PSB damage. Specifically, the vertically heterogeneous characteristics of the biophysical and optical properties within the canopy were carefully considered. First, we developed an approach to reconstruct damaged forest scenes through individual tree segmentation from UAV-lidar data and in situ measurements. Second, the simulated reflectance of forest scenes was compared with the actual hyperspectral and Sentinel-2 (S2) reflectance data to evaluate the performance of the parameterized RAPID. Then, the parameterized RAPID model was used to create a look-up table (LUT) containing the leaf chlorophyll content (C ab), effective leaf area index (LAI e), SDR, and dead needles LAI e (LAI dead , LAI e × SDR) as well as the corresponding simulated canopy reflectance. Furthermore, tree allometric equations were used to regularize the LUT with the intention to improve the estimation accuracy. Good agreement (RMSE: 0.015-0.031, index of agreement: 0.97-0.99) was found between the simulated reflectance and the remote sensing observations. The retrieval accuracy of the biochemical and biophysical parameters using S2 data yielded R2 = 0.55 (normalized RMSE (NRMSE) = 19%) for C ab , R2 = 0.70 (NRMSE = 15%) for the LAI e , R2 = 0.66 (NRMSE = 25%) for SDR, and R2 = 0.82 (NRMSE = 18%) for LAI dead. Using hyperspectral data with higher spatial and spectral resolution yielded better retrieval performance. This study demonstrated that 3D models (such as RAPID) have great potential to accurately invert SDR and LAI dead to assess PSB damage for the forests. The disturbance of the immune homeostasis caused by infection is decisive for multiple organ dysfunction caused by sepsis. Both the th17 cell and the regulatory cell(Tregs) are important components of the immune system and play a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis. In this study, we explored the effect of Maresin1, an emerging specific pro-inflammatory mediator, on the balance of Th17/Treg in sepsis, and investigated the underlying mechanism. We used the male C57BL/6 mice to establish the model of sepsis-induced lung injury by cecal ligation and puncture to verify the protective effect of Maresin1. Our study showed that Maresin1 could significantly inhibit the excessive inflammatory response and promote the inflammation regression in the process of sepsis-induced acute lung injury, thereby reducing lung damage and improving lung function. These effects were accompanied with the regulation of Maresin1 on the Th17/Treg balance in the early stages of sepsis. We demonstrated that Maresin1 has a certain effect on increasing the number of Treg and decreasing the number of Th17 cells in the early stages of sepsis, which is consistent with its effect on STAT3/RORγt and STAT5/Foxp3 signal pathways. Our study elucidated for the first time the relationship between Maresin1 and Th17/Treg balance in sepsis-induced acute lung injury. Despite much effort made in studying human health associated with fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), our knowledge about PM 2.5 and human health from a long-term perspective is still limited by inadequately long data. Here, we presented a novel method to retrieve surface PM 2.5 mass concentrations using surface visibility measurements and GEOS-Chem model simulations. First, we used visibility measurements and the ratio of PM 2.5 and aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC) in GEOS-Chem to calculate visibility-inferred PM 2.5 at individual stations (SC-PM 2.5). Then we merged SC-PM 2.5 with the spatial pattern of GEOS-Chem modeled PM 2.5 to obtain a gridded PM 2.5 dataset (GC-PM 2.5). We validated the GC-PM 2.5 data over the North China Plain on a 0.3125° longitude x 0.25° latitude grid in January, April, July and October 2014, using ground-based PM 2.5 measurements. The spatial patterns of temporally averaged PM 2.5 mass concentrations are consistent between GC-PM 2.5 and measured data with a correlation coefficient of 0.79 and a linear regression slope of 0.8. The spatial average GC-PM 2.5 data reproduce the day-to-day variation of observed PM 2.5 concentrations with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 and a slope of 1.0. The mean bias is less than 12 μg/m3 (<14%). The existence of mass-independently fractionated sulfur in Archean rocks is almost universally accepted as evidence for low atmospheric O 2 and O 3 concentrations at that time. But the detailed patterns of the Δ 33 S values and of the ratios Δ 33 S / δ 34 S and Δ 36 S / Δ 33 S remain to be explained, and the mechanism for producing the mass-independent fractionation remains controversial. Here, we explore the hypothesis that the relatively low Δ 33 S values seen during the Mid-Archean, 2.7-3.5 Ga, were caused by the presence of organic haze produced from photolysis of methane. This haze helped shield SO 2 from photolysis, while at the same time providing surfaces on which unfractionated short-chain sulfur species could condense. The evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis, and the concomitant disappearance of organic haze towards the end of the Archean allowed more negatively fractionated S 4 and S 8 to form, thereby generating large positive fractionations in other sulfur species, including sulfate and H 2 S. Reduction of this sulfate to H 2 S by bacteria, followed by incorporation of H 2 S into pyrite, produced the large positive Δ 33 S values observed in the Neoarchean rock record, 2.5-2.7 Ga. • Organic haze can explain the relatively low (but non-zero) Δ 33 S values seen during the mid-Archean. • The disappearance of this haze at ∼2.7 Ga can explain the much higher Δ 33 S values seen then. • The disappearance of the haze may have been caused by the invention of oxygenic photosynthesis. • Combinatorial fractionation is likely the major contributor to the sulfur MIF signal seen in the Archean rock record. Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a major support for patients with severe clinical disease, surgery and anesthesia. However, complications of mechanical ventilation especially ventilator-induced lung injury(VILI) can make the course and prognosis worse. Resolvin D1(RvD1) is a class of endogenous polyunsaturated fatty acid derivative, which has protective effects on various pulmonary inflammatory diseases. However, the mechanism of RvD1 in the process of VILI has not been fully elucidated. Our study found that RvD1 does have a protective effect on VILI including inhibiting inflammatory responses, reducing tissue damage and improving pulmonary function. The protective effect of RvD1 is positively related to its dose. Our research suggested RvD1 plays a role that increases the expression of heme oxygenase‑1 (HO-1) and decreases the expression of the high mobility group chromosomal protein B1 (HMGB-1) in VILI. HO-1 can exert the protective effect of organism through multiple mechanisms such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, anti-apoptosis, etc. HMGB1 is a potent inflammatory response factor in the body, which can aggravate the inflammatory response of the body. Our study demonstrated that RvD1 can ameliorate lung inflammation and reduce pathological changes in lung tissue in a model of lung injury induced by mechanical ventilation. The protective role of RvD1 is closely linked to the increased expression of HO-1 and the decreased expression of HMGB1. Moreover, we found that RvD1 can increase the expression of Nrf2 and inhibit the expression of NF-κB. We found the specific inhibitor of HO-1, ZnPP, can significantly inhibit the protective role of RvD1 in VILI. When HO-1 is inhibited, pathological damage and inflammatory reaction in the lungs are considerably aggravated, and pulmonary function is significantly weakened. In addition, the expression of HMGB1 is drastically increased. Ambient near-surface ozone pollution threatens public health. Over the past decades, the world has seen complex ozone changes across the globe, with important implications for public health. Previous studies have estimated premature mortality attributable to ozone exposure in more recent years, yet a historical assessment of the health impacts of ozone is largely lacking. Contrary to controlling many other air pollutants endangering public health, reducing ozone pollution is complicated by its nonlinear chemistry and complex relationship with precursor emissions. A historical evaluation is crucial to understanding the long-term changes in surface ozone concentration, driving factors, and health implications. This study uses chemical transport model simulations, ground measurements, and pollution-health response models to estimate the ozone changes over the past few decades, their health impacts, and the effectiveness of precursor emission control. Emission datasets of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at high horizontal resolutions (e.g., 0.05°×0.05°) are crucial for understanding human influences at fine scales, air quality studies, and pollution control. Yet high-resolution emission data are often lacking or contain large uncertainties especially for the developing regions. Taking advantage of long-term satellite measurements of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), here we develop a computationally efficient method to inverting NOx emissions in major urban areas at the 0.05°×0.05° resolution. The inversion accounts for the nonlinear effects of horizontal transport, chemical loss, and deposition. We construct a 2-dimensional Peking University High-resolution Lifetime-Emission-Transport (PHLET) model, its adjoint model (PHLET-A), and a Satellite Conversion Metrix approach to relate emissions, simulated NO2, and satellite NO2 data. The inversion method is applied to summer months of 2012–2016 in the Yangtze River Delta area (YRD, 118°E-123°E, 29°N-34°N), a major polluted region of China, using the POMINO NO2 vertical column density product retrieved from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument. A systematic analysis of inversion errors is performed, including using an Observing System Simulation Experiment-like test. Across the YRD area, the inverted summer average emission ranges from 0 to 12.0 kg km-2 h-1, and the lifetime (due to chemical loss and deposition) from 1.4 to 3.6 h. Our inverted emission dataset reveals fine-scale spatial information tied to nighttime light, population density, road network, and maritime shipping. Many of the inverted fine-scale emission features are not well represented or not included in the widely used Multi-scale Emissions Inventory of China. Yunnan pine shoot beetles (PSB), Tomicus yunnanensis and Tomicus minor have spread through southwestern China in the last five years, leading to millions of hectares of forest being damaged. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop an effective approach for accurate early warning and damage assessment of PSB outbreaks. Remote sensing is one of the most efficient methods for this purpose. Despite many studies existing on the mountain pine beetle (MPB), very little work has been undertaken on assessing PSB stress using remote sensing. The objective of this paper was to develop a spectral linear mixing model aided by radiative transfer (RT) and a new Yellow Index (YI) to simulate the reflectance of heterogeneous canopies containing damaged needles and quantitatively inverse their PSB stress. The YI, the fraction of dead needles, is a physically-explicit stress indicator that represents the plot shoots damage ratio (plot SDR). The major steps of this methods include: (1) LIBERTY2 was developed to simulate the reflectance of damaged needles using YI to linearly mix the green needle spectra with the dead needle spectra; (2) LIBERTY2 was coupled with the INFORM model to scale the needle spectra to the canopy scale; and (3) a look-up table (LUT) was created against Sentinel 2 (S2) imagery and inversed leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), green leaf area index (LAI) and plot SDR. The results show that (1) LIBERTY2 effectively simulated the reflectance spectral values on infested needles (mean relative error (MRE) = 1.4–18%), and the YI can indicate the degrees of needles damage; (2) the coupled LIBERTY2-INFORM model is suitable to estimate LAI (R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 0.17 m m−2, NRMSE = 11.41% and the index of agreement (IOA) = 0.92) and LCC (R2 = 0.49, RMSE = 56.24 mg m−2, NRMSE = 25.22% and IOA = 0.72), and is better than the original LIBERTY model (LAI: R2 = 0.38, RMSE = 0.43 m m−2, NRMSE = 28.85% and IOA = 0.68; LCC: R2 = 0.34, RMSE = 76.44 mg m−2, NRMSE = 34.23% and IOA = 0.57); and (3) the inversed YI is positively correlated with the measured plot SDR (R2 = 0.40, RMSE = 0.15). We conclude that the LIBERTY2 model improved the reflectance simulation accuracy of both the needles and canopies, making it suitable for assessing PSB stress.
