In recent years, air pollution in Xinjiang, the core region of the Silk Road Economic Belt, has become increasingly severe, posing a more significant threat to human health. This paper selects the tropospheric ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and formaldehyde datasets under OMI remote-sensing monitoring and the PM2.5 dataset in China High Air Pollutants (CHAP) for 2018–2021. The spatial and temporal distribution of multi-pollutants, the spatial autocorrelation of Moran's I index pollutants, and the correlation between pollutants in the warm period were studied in southern Xinjiang. Meanwhile, the geographical and temporal weighted regression (GTWR) model was used for influencing factor analysis, and the BenMap-CE model was used for health benefit analysis. The results showed that the spatial distribution of ozone concentration values in southern Xinjiang shows a decreasing distribution pattern from the east–central region to the western and southern regions. The spatial distribution of formaldehyde concentration values is opposite to that of ozone. There is a clear high-value area in the ozone concentration value in April–September. The NO2 column concentration values were in the range of 0.55~1.09 × 1015 molec/cm2 in most parts of southern Xinjiang. The area of high concentration values is located in the northeast of the study area; PM2.5 concentration values are higher in the middle area of southern Xinjiang. The spatial autocorrelation characteristics showed that the spatial aggregation of O3 and NO2 displayed a slow increasing trend year by year. The spatial aggregation of HCHO and PM2.5 fluctuated slightly in four years. The overall trend of HCHO is slowly decreasing, while PM2.5 is fluctuating and increasing. In the GTWR model analysis, overall, the atmospheric pressure has a strong influence on all pollutants. The effect of NO2 on O3 was higher than that of HCHO among the four pollutants. The correlation between O3 and PM2.5 was as high as −0.7872. The BenMap-CE health benefits assessment concluded that the number of premature deaths caused by ozone pollution was much higher than that of premature deaths caused by PM2.5. The factors regulating potential acquisition of sulphur (S)-containing amino acids by plant roots from the rhizosphere remain poorly understood. Using radio tracer (14C and 35S), we studied the competition for two S-containing amino acids (i.e., cysteine (Cys) and methionine (Met)) within 24 hours (h), by the rhizosphere microbial community and maize plants (Zea mays L.). Our results showed that the capture of Cys and Met by the maize plants was much lower, with only <10% of the added amino acid-14C or 35S captured by the plant, compared to the rhizosphere microbial community (76.9%) on average. We suggest that this could be a result of relatively high availability of inorganic N and S in soil solution, the lack of transmembrane for amino acids on maize root cells, as well as the rapid turnover of Cys and Met by soil microbes in the rhizosphere. The addition of inorganic S, significantly reduced plant capture of Cys and Met-14C by maize plants in the rhizosphere but had little effect on the capture of Cys and Met-35S (p<0.05). Overall, our results imply that (1) Cys and Met are available carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and S sources for maize plants, potentially contributing to total plant N and S demand under certain conditions; (2) Utilization of Cys and Met by maize roots in the rhizosphere is independent of inorganic S availability; (3) Increased amino acid concentration led to higher capture by both plants and soil microbes, but had little effect on the competition success on either side. Performing research on the variation in lake water on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) can give the area's ecological environmental preservation a scientific foundation. In this paper, we first created a high-precision dataset of lake water level variation every 10 days, from July 2002 to December 2022, using multi-source altimetry satellite SGDR data (Envisat RA-2, SARAL, Jason-1/2, and Sentinel-3A/3B SRAL), which integrated the methods of atmospheric path delay correction, waveform re-tracking, outlier detection, position reduction using a height difference model, and inter-satellite deviation adjustment. Then, using Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper, Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper, and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager data, an averaged area series of Lake Qinghai (LQ) from September to November, each year from 2002 to 2019, was produced. The functional connection between the water level and the area was determined by fitting the water level–area series data, and the lake area time series, of LQ. Using the high-precision lake water level series, the fitted lake surface area time series, and the water storage variation equation, the water storage variation time series of LQ was thus calculated every 10 days, from July 2002 to December 2022. When the hydrological gauge data from the Xiashe station and data from the worldwide inland lake water level database are used as references, the standard deviations of the LQ water level time series are 0.0676 m and 0.1201 m, respectively. The results show that the water storage of LQ increases by 11.022 × 109 m3 from July 2002 to December 2022, with a growth rate of 5.3766 × 108 m3/a. The growth rate from January 2005 to January 2015 is 4.4850 × 108 m3/a, and from January 2015 to December 2022, the growth rate is 8.9206 × 108 m3/a. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics have contributed to the rise of antimicrobial resistance as one of the top public health threats. Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are prevalent in agricultural soils due to the widespread application of livestock and organic wastes. However, information about the occurrence, distribution, and risk of antibiotics and ARGs in agricultural soils is lacking for many scenarios. In this study, based on 2225 observations from 135 independent studies, we summarized the concentration or abundance of antibiotics or ARGs under different fertilizer sources and land-use patterns, analyzed the contributions of key environmental factors to the occurrence of antibiotics and ARGs in agricultural soils, and highlighted the potential ecological risk of typical antibiotics and the relationship between ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Our results showed that cattle manure, chicken manure, swine manure, and sewage sludge were the primary pollution sources of antibiotics and ARGs in agricultural soils, and sulfonamides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and their corresponding ARGs were the main pollution types. Land-use type, soil, and climatic factors affected antibiotics concentration and ARG abundances. MGEs play a vital role in promoting the dissemination of ARGs, especially the sul1 gene is closely related to intI1. In conclusion, our findings and future research exploring these topics will contribute to better management of antibiotic and ARG contamination in agricultural soils and their risk to human health. The rate reduction models have been widely used to model the recurrent failure data for their capabilities in quantifying the repair effects. Despite the widespread popularity, there have been limited studies on statistical inference of most failure rate reduction models. In view of this fact, this study proposes a semiparametric estimation framework for a general class of such models, called extended geometric failure rate reduction (EGFRR) models. Covariates are considered in our analysis and their effects are modeled as a log‐linear factor on the baseline failure rate. Unlike the existing inference methods for the EGFRR models that assume the failure data are censored at a fixed number of failures, our study considers covariates and time‐censoring, which are more common in practice. The semiparametric maximum likelihood (ML) estimators are obtained by carefully constructing the likelihood function. Asymptotic properties including consistency and weak convergence of the ML estimators are established by using the properties of the martingale process. In addition, we show that the semiparametric estimators are asymptotically efficient. A real example from the automobile industry illustrates the usefulness of the proposed framework and extensive simulations show its outstanding performance when comparing with the existing methods. The trajectory planning for Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the dynamic environments is a challenging task. Many restrictions should be taken into consideration, including dynamic terrain collision, no-fly zone criteria, power and fuel criteria and so on. However, some methods treat dynamic restrictions as static in order to reduce cost and obtain efficient and acceptable paths. To achieve optimal, efficient and acceptable paths, we first use a high-dimension matrix, extended hierarchical graph, to model the unexplored dynamic grid environment and to convert weather conditions to passable coefficient. The original shortest path planning task is then translated to plan the safest path. Therefore, we propose a new forward exploration and backward navigation algorithm, matrix alignment Dijkstra (MAD), to pilot UAVs. We use matrix alignment operation to simulate the parallel exploration process of all cells from time t to t + 1 . This exploration process can be accelerated on a GPU. Finally, we recall the optimal path according to the navigator matrix. In addition, we can achieve UAV path planning from one source cell to multiple target cells within one single run. We validate our method on a real dynamic weather dataset and get competitive results in both efficiency and accuracy. We analyse the performance of MAD on a grid-based benchmark dataset and artificial maze data. With the gradual improvement of Galileo and the opening of BDS-3 services, water vapor tomography based on multi-GNSS can be effectively carried out to reconstruct three-dimensional water vapor distribution. In this paper, experiments in Hong Kong were conducted to analyze and assess the performances of GPS, BDS, GLONASS, and Galileo and their combinations in water vapor tomography. Numerical results show that the number of available signal rays varies widely in the four satellite systems, and the value can be increased by the combination of satellite systems; the combinations also increase the number of voxels crossed by signal rays, but this value is not directly related to the number of available signal rays; the number and distribution of the voxels with sufficient signal rays, which most closely related to the structure of the tomographic model, show no obvious differences in the four satellite systems and their combinations. Comparative results of slant water vapor (SWV) estimated by GNSS data and water vapor density derived from radiosonde data reveal that the differences in the water vapor tomography of the four satellite systems are small, and their combinations have limited improvement in the tomographic results. • Single atom Ir doped few layer MoS 2 was successfully synthesized. • Single atom Ir doped MoS 2 has outstanding performance for hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), reaching up to 96.5% yield of DMF. • Single atom Ir doped MoS 2 can be reused for five times without loss of activity. The catalytic transformation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is of great importance within the context of biomass valorization, but remains a major challenge due to the complicated reaction networks. Herein, single-atom Ir doped ultrathin MoS 2 layers were synthesized and used as catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation of HMF, yielding 96.5% of DMF. The single atomic structure of Ir was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), X-ray absorption fine structure analysis (XAFS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the Ir doped MoS 2 catalyst showed excellent stability and did not deactivate after five reaction cycles. Bombyx mori triose-phosphate transporter protein (BmTPT) is a member of the solute carrier (SLC) family. Its main function is to transport triose phosphate between intracellular and extracellular. In this study, BmTPT was cloned and characterised from the fat body of the silkworm Bombyx mori , resulting in an open reading frame (ORF) with a full length of 936 bp, which can encode 311 amino acid residues and has eight transmembrane structural domains. BmTPT was distributed throughout the cell and deposited the most in the nucleus, and is expressed in all tissues of Bombyx mori. Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) infection significantly up-regulated BmTPT expression in immune tissue fat bodies. In addition, overexpression of BmTPT significantly inhibited BmNPV infection and markedly reduced the expression of enzymes related to the cellular glycolytic pathway; on the contrary, down-regulation of BmTPT expression by RNA interference resulted in robust replication of BmNPV and a significant increase in the expression of enzymes related to the cellular glycolytic pathway. This is the first report that BmTPT has antiviral effect in silkworm, and also could result in a lack of energy and raw materials for BmNPV replication and infection through down-regulation of the cellular glycolytic pathway. • BmTPT showed a positive inhibitory effect on the replication and infection of BmNPV. • The activation of BmTPT increased the amount of dihydroxyacetone phosphate and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, which were the intermediate products of intracellular glycolysis pathway, and thus reversed the process of glycolysis. Infection-induced preterm birth (PTB) is contributing to the main factors of increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Infections and inflammation are often accompanied by histologic chorioamnionitis. Recently, several studies have uncovered that miR-21 and NF-κB are associated with pathological processes of pregnant women. However, the role of miR-21 in infection-induced PTB remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether miR-21 is involved in the pathogenesis of infection-induced PTB by regulating NF-κB. In this study, we found that the expression of miR-21 was significantly decreased in placental tissues of lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced infectious PTB mice model, accompanied by the increase of NF-κB, IL-6, and TNF-α (P < 0.05). Luciferase reporter gene assays showed that NF-κB was a validated target of miR-21. Furthermore, cell transfection experiments showed that miR-21 overexpression significantly decreased NF-κB mRNA expression compared with the miR-control group and blank group. Conversely, miR-21 inhibitor can enhance NF-κB mRNA expression. After the treatment of miR-21 mimics, miR-21 expression was obviously increased compared with the LPS group, accompanied by the decrease of NF-κB, TNF-α, and IL-6 mRNA expression (P < 0.05). What's more, miR-21 expression was negatively correlated with NF-κB (r=−0.87, P < 0.01). Overall, the study findings indicate that miR-21 may contribute to the pathogenesis of infection-induced PTB by upregulating the target NF-κB and that miR-21 may be a new potential therapeutic target for infection-induced PTB. Currently, there are no effective therapeutic agents available to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, edaravone dexborneol (EDB), a novel composite agent used to treat acute ischemic stroke, has recently been shown to exert efficacious neuroprotective effects. However, whether EDB can ameliorate cognitive deficits in AD currently remains unclear. To this end, we explored the effects of EDB on AD and its potential mechanisms using an AD animal model (male APP/PS1 mice) treated with EDB for 10 weeks starting at 6 months of age. Subsequent analyses revealed that EDB-treated APP/PS1 mice exhibited improved cognitive abilities compared to untreated APP/PS1 mice. Administration of EDB in APP/PS1 mice further alleviated neuropathological alterations of the hippocampus, including Aβ deposition, pyramidal cell karyopyknosis, and oxidative damage, and significantly decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) and COX-2 in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. Transcriptome sequencing analysis demonstrated the critical role of the inflammatory reaction in EDB treatment in APP/PS1 mice, indicating that the alleviation of the inflammatory reaction by EDB in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice was linked to the action of the TREM2/TLR4/MAPK signaling pathway. Further in vitro investigations showed that EDB suppressed neuroinflammation in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells by inhibiting the TLR4/MAPK signaling pathway and upregulating TREM2 expression. Thus, the findings of the present study demonstrate that EDB is a promising therapeutic agent for AD-related cognitive dysfunction. Particle-stabilized technique for fabricating foam ceramics was developed in 2006. Porous ceramics with porosity over 95% can be prepared by this newly developed method. This foaming technique was derived from the principle of Pickering foam to a large extent. The high internal phase volume, narrow distribution of pore size as well as the structural stability of the Pickering system enable the final ceramic products to realize their functionality in a variety of applications. However, the interfacial aspect of the foaming system determines the final product in many ways, which brings this novel method details to explore and possibilities to challenge. The current review introduces the particle-stabilized method combining with colloid and surface science since particles are the building block of ceramic materials. The history of this newly invented method was mentioned at first, followed by foam ceramic products prepared by this foaming technique combining with corresponding mechanism. Some representative applications involving ceramic materials made by particle-stabilized method were discussed. At last, we conclude the overall article and put forward some outlooks and challenges about the future direction of this unique foaming technique. Zebrafish Liver-enriched gene 1a (Leg1a) and Leg1b are liver-produced serum proteins encoded by two adjacently linked homologous genes leg1a and leg1b , respectively. We previously showed that maternal-zygotic (MZ) leg1a null mutant developed a small liver at 3.5 days post-fertilization (dpf) during winter-time or under UV-treatment and displayed an abnormal stature at its adulthood. It is puzzling why Leg1b, which shares 89.3% identity with Leg1a and co-expressed with Leg1a, cannot fully compensate for the loss-of-function of Leg1a in the leg1a zju1 MZ mutant. Here we report that Leg1a and Leg1b share eight cysteine residues but differ in amino acid residue 358, which is a serine in Leg1a but cysteine (C358) in Leg1b. We find that Leg1b forms an intermolecular disulfide bond through C358. Mutating C358 to Methionine (M358) does not affect Leg1b secretion whereas mutating other conserved cysteine residues do. We propose that the intermolecular disulfide bond in Leg1b might establish a rigid structure that makes it functionally different from Leg1a under certain oxidative conditions. • Zebrafish Leg1a and Leg1b are liver-produced serum proteins sharing 89.3% identity. • Leg1b could not fully compensate for the loss-of-fucntion of Leg1a regarding early liver development and adult growth. • Leg1a and Leg1b differ in amino acid residue 358, which is a serine in Leg1a but cysteine (C358) in Leg1b. • Leg1b forms an intermolecular disulfide bond through C358. • The intermolecular disulfide bond in Leg1b makes it functionally different from Leg1a under certain oxidative conditions. Tropical and subtropical acidic soils have been well documented as hotspots of global soil nitrogen (N) oxide (i.e., nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) emissions). While the effectiveness of possible mitigation options has been extensively examined in croplands, little is known about their effectiveness in reducing N‐oxide emissions from acidic soils of rapidly expanding tea plantations in China. Here, we conducted a 2‐year field experiment to investigate how organic substitution for synthetic fertilizer and biochar amendment affect soil N‐oxide emissions from a subtropical tea plantation. Across the 2‐year measurement period, full organic substitution for synthetic fertilizer significantly increased N2O emissions by an average of 17% while had a lower NO emission compared to synthetic fertilizer alone. Our global meta‐analysis further revealed that full or partial organic fertilizer substitution resulted in a 29% (95% confidence interval: 5%–60%) increase of N2O emissions from acidic soils. In contrast, irrespective of fertilizer type, biochar amendment significantly reduced N2O emissions by 14% in the first but not second experimental year, suggesting a transient effect. The trade‐off effect of full organic substitution on N2O and NO emissions may be attributed to the favorable conditions for N2O production due to the stimulated activity of nitrifiers and denitrifiers. The suppression of N2O emission following biochar amendment was probably due to promoted further reduction of N2O to dinitrogen. The fertilizer‐induced emission factor (EF) of N2O (2.1%) in the tea plantation was greater than the current IPCC default value, but the EF of NO (0.8%) was comparable to the global estimate. Taken together, while biochar amendment could have mitigation potential, cautions are needed when applying organic substitution for synthetic fertilizer as mitigation options for acidic soils as hotspots of N‐oxide emissions. The application of biochar to land has been promoted as a strategy for sequestering carbon in soils, for improving soil fertility and remediating soil pollution. However, the implications of biochar amendments on mycorrhizal associations and pesticide decomposition in agricultural soils are poorly understood. In this study, we compared the effects of four treatments; control (no biochar and no arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), biochar (biochar without AMF), AMF (AMF without biochar) and biochar + AMF (AMF and biochar) on the fate of simazine. We specifically focused on the sorption, leaching and biodegradation behaviour of simazine. Our results showed that when symbiosis existed between plants and AMF, biochar inhibited simazine decomposition and AMF inoculation alleviated this inhibition. In contrast, this alleviation was not observed when the plant was removed. In addition, AMF inoculated into the biochar amended soil significantly decreased simazine concentration in the leachate; however, in the AMF‐only treatment, no effect on simazine leaching was observed. These phenomena were attributed to variation in the soil's sorption capacity due to biochar application or AMF inoculation. In the field of underwater acoustic communication, multipath signals arrive at the receiving end with different angles and path delays, which can cause degradation in communication quality. When performing angle-delay joint estimation, sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) has many advantages over traditional methods, such as high accuracy, resolution and global minimum results, but at the cost of high computational complexity. Regarding this, in this study, we propose a low-complexity SBL based framework to jointly estimate the angle and delay of the received signal. We first propose a low-complexity approximation SBL algorithm applied to joint estimation, which can keep the super-resolution and estimation accuracy but significantly reduce the computation time. To further tackle the problem of performance degradation of the approximate algorithm in underwater low signal-to-noise ratio environments, we utilize above result as a starting point for the space-alternating generalized Expectation Maximization (SAGE) algorithm to achieve a more precise estimation. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has an excellent performance in various underwater multipath scenarios. • We first propose a low-complexity approximation SBL algorithm applied to joint angle and delay estimation. • It can keep the super-resolution and estimation accuracy but significantly reduce the computation time. • In low SNR environment, we use above result as a starting point for the SAGE algorithm for more precise estimation. • Simulation and experimental results demonstrate its excellent performance in various multipath environments. Growing evidence suggests that tropospheric ozone has widespread effects on vegetation, which can contribute to alter ecosystem carbon (C) dynamics and belowground processes. In this study, we used intact soil mesocosms from a semi-improved grassland and investigated the effects of elevated ozone, alone and in combination with nitrogen (N) fertilization on soil-borne greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem C fluxes. Ozone exposure under fully open-air field conditions was occurred during the growing season. Across a one-year period, soil methane (CH 4) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions did not differ between treatments, but elevated ozone significantly depressed soil CH 4 uptake by 14% during the growing season irrespective of N fertilization. Elevated ozone resulted in a 15% reduction of net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide, while N fertilization significantly increased ecosystem respiration during the growing season. Aboveground biomass was unaffected by elevated ozone during the growing season but significantly decreased by 17% during the non-growing season. At the end of the experiment, soil mineral N content, net N mineralization and extracellular enzyme activities (i.e., cellobiohydrolase and leucine aminopeptidase) were higher under elevated ozone than ambient ozone. The short-term effect of single application of N fertilizer was primarily responsible for the lack of the interaction between elevated ozone and N fertilization. Therefore, results of our short-term study suggest that ozone exposure may have negative impacts on soil CH 4 uptake and C sequestration and contribute to accelerated rates of soil N-cycling. • Temperate grassland mesocosms were exposed to ozone with or without N fertilizer. • Elevated ozone had negative effects on soil CH 4 uptake and net ecosystem CO 2 exchange. • Aboveground biomass was reduced during the non-growing but not the growing season. • A positive feedback of soil N-cycling to ozone exposure was detected. [Display omitted] The coalescence of droplets with liquid–gas interfaces of different surface tensions is common in nature and industrial applications, where the Marangoni-driven film spreading is an essential process. Unlike immiscible fluids governed by triple contact line dynamics, the mixing between two miscible fluids strongly couples with the film spreading process, which are expected to manifest distinct power-law relations for the temporal increase in the film radius. We experimentally investigate the Marangoni-driven film spreading phenomenon for a droplet with lower surface tension dropping onto a miscible, thin liquid layer. The temporal growth of the film radius was detected by using a novel deep convolutional neural network, the U2-net method. Scaling analysis was performed to interpret the spreading dynamics of the film. We find that the film radius exhibits a three-stage power-law relation over time, with the exponent varying from 1/2 to 1/8, and back to 1/2. Understanding the chemo-mechanical coupling effect during oxidation at elevated temperatures is of critical importance for revealing complicated oxidation mechanism and oxidation behavior, as well as proposing countermeasures for oxidation protection. There has been an intensive investigation of the chemo-mechanics in planar oxidation, while much less attention is paid to the issue of non-planar oxidation. In this work, we proposed a curvature-dependent chemo-mechanical coupling model to investigate the two-dimensional oxidation process on curved surfaces. The oxidation kinetics including the oxide thickness and oxide growth rate on the curved surfaces, as well as the stress distribution and evolution at the substrate-oxide interface, were demonstrated. Comparisons between the experimental observations and theoretical predictions validated the accuracy of the proposed model, and the phenomenon of inhibition of oxidation on both convex and concave surfaces was explained by the stress-curvature effect on the oxidation process. As an important and complex trait, inflorescence length (IL) of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] significantly affected seed yields. Therefore, elucidating molecular basis of inflorescence architecture, especially for IL, was important for improving soybean yield potentials. Longer IL meaned to have more pod and seed in soybean. Hence, increasing IL and improving yield are targets for soybean breeding. In this study, a association panel, comprising 283 diverse samples, was used to dissect the genetic basis of IL based on genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) and haplotype analysis. GWAS and haplotype analysis were conducted through high-throughout single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) developed by SLAF-seq methodology. A total of 39, 057 SNPs (minor allele frequency ≥ 0.2 and missing data ≤ 10%) were utilized to evaluate linkage disequilibrium (LD) level in the tested association panel. A total of 30 association signals were identified to be associated with IL via GWAS. Among them, 13 SNPs were novel, and another 17 SNPs were overlapped or located near the linked regions of known quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) with soybean seed yield or yield component. The functional genes, located in the 200-kb genomic region of each peak SNP, were considered as candidate genes, such as the cell division/ elongation, specific enzymes, and signaling or transport of specific proteins. These genes have been reported to participant in the regulation of IL. Ten typical long-IL lines and ten typical short-IL lines were re-sequencing, and then, six SNPs from five genes were obtained based on candidate gene-based association. In addition, 42 haplotypes were defined based on haplotype analysis. Of them, 11 haplotypes were found to regulate long IL (> 14 mm) in soybean. The identified 30 QTN with beneficial alleles and their candidate genes might be valuable for dissecting the molecular mechanisms of IL and further improving the yield potential of soybean. Abstract Reduced belowground carbon (C) allocation by plants exposed to ozone may change properties and activities of the microbial community in soils. To investigate how soil microbial biomass and extracellular enzyme activities respond to elevated ozone, we collected soils from a temperate grassland after four years of ozone exposure under fully open-air field conditions. We measured soil microbial biomass, the metabolism of low molecular weight C substrates and hydrolytic extracellular enzyme activities in both bulk soil and isolated aggregates to assess changes in microbial activity and community function. After four years of elevated ozone treatment, soil total organic C was reduced by an average of 20% compared with ambient condition. Elevated ozone resulted in a small but insignificant reduction (4–10%) in microbial biomass in both bulk soil and isolated aggregates. Activities of extracellular enzymes were generally not affected by elevated ozone, except β -glucosidase, whose activity in bulk soil was significantly lower under elevated ozone than ambient condition. Activities of β -glucosidase, leucine aminopeptidase and acid phosphatase were higher in microaggregates (<0.25 mm) as compared to macroaggregates (>0.25 mm). Elevated ozone had no effects on mineralization rates of low molecular weight C substrates in both bulk soil and isolated aggregates. We therefore conclude that the size and activity rather than function of the soil microbial community in this semi-natural grassland are altered by elevated ozone. Cardiac fibrosis with diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of major diabetic complications. miR-21 and MMP-9 were closely associated with fibrosis diseases. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) have cardioprotective effects. However, it remains unclear whether miR-21 was involved in the mechanism of cardiac fibrosis with DN by target MMP-9 and ARB ameliorates cardiac fibrosis partly by inhibiting miR-21 expression. In this study, In Situ Hybridization(ISH), RT-PCR, cell transfection, western blotting and laser confocal telescope were used, respectively. ISH showed that miR-21, concentrated in cytoplasmic foci in the proximity of the nucleus, was mainly localized in cardiac fibroblasts and at relatively low levels in cardiomyocytes within cardiac tissue with DN. RT-PCR showed that miR-21 expression was significantly enhanced in cardiac tissue with DN, accompanied by the increase of col-IV, FN, CVF, PVCA, LVMI, HWI and NT-pro-BNP (p < 0.05). Bioinformatics analysis and Luciferase reporter gene assays showed that MMP-9 was a validated target of miR-21. Furthermore, cell transfection experiments showed that miR-21 overexpression directly decreased MMP-9 expression. Interestingly, miR-21 levels in cardiac tissue was positively correlated with ACR (r = −0.870, P = 0.003), whereas, uncorrelated with SBP, HbA1C and T-Cho (p > 0.05). More importantly, ARB can significantly decrease miR-21 expression in cardiac tissue, cardiac fibroblasts and serum. Overall, our results suggested that miR-21 may contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiac fibrosis with DN by target MMP-9, and that miR-21 may be a new possible therapeutic target for ARB in cardiac fibrosis with DN. Understanding the chemo-mechanics during oxidation is of great importance for designing novel countermeasures for materials protections. However, it is yet challenging to accurately measure the coupled mechanical stress/strain components at micro-/nanoscale. In this work, we propose a novel method to combine surface markers (SiO 2 micro-pillars) and high temperature scanning probe microscopy (HTSPM) for quantifying the growing oxide thickness, while mapping the local displacement and strain fields at the surface of a nickel-based alloy during high temperature oxidation. To model hepatic steatosis in adult humans with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease based on stereology and spatial distribution of fat droplets from liver biopsy specimens. Histological analysis was performed on 30 adult human liver biopsy specimens with varying degrees of steatosis. Morphological features of fat droplets were characterized by gamma distribution function (GDF) in both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) spaces from three aspects: 1) size distribution indicating non-uniformity of fat droplets in radius; 2) nearest neighbor distance distribution indicating heterogeneous accumulation (i.e., clustering) of fat droplets; 3) regional anisotropy indicating inter-regional variability in fat fraction (FF). To generalize the morphological description of hepatic steatosis to different FFs, correlation analysis was performed among the estimated GDF parameters and FFs for all specimens. Finally, Monte Carlo modeling of hepatic steatosis was developed to simulate fat droplet distribution in tissue. Morphological features, including size and nearest neighbor distance in 2D and 3D spaces as well as regional anisotropy, statistically captured the distribution of fat droplets by the GDF fit (R 2 > 0.54). The estimated GDF parameters (i.e., scale and shape parameters) and FFs were well correlated, with R 2 > 0.55. In addition, simulated 3D liver morphological models demonstrated similar sections to real histological samples both visually and quantitatively. The morphology of hepatic steatosis is well characterized by stereology and spatial distribution of fat droplets. Simulated models demonstrate similar appearances to real histological samples. Biochar has gained significant attention in agricultural and environmental research over the last two decades. This comprehensive review evaluates the effects of biochar on soil organic carbon (SOC), emission of non-CO2 greenhouse gases, and crop yield, including related mechanisms and major influencing factors. The impacts of biochar on SOC, methane and nitrous oxide emissions, and crop yield are controlled by biochar and soil properties and management practices. High-temperature biochar produced from lignin-rich feedstocks may decrease methane and nitrous oxide emissions in acidic soils and strengthen long-term carbon sequestration due to its stable aromatic structure. In contrast, low-temperature biochar from manure may increase crop yield in low-fertility soils. Applying biochar to farmlands in China can increase SOC content by 1.9 Pg C and reduce methane and nitrous oxide emissions by 25 and 20 Mt CO2-eq year−1, respectively, while increasing crop yields by 19%. Despite the increasing evidence of the positive effects of biochar, future research needs to explore the potential factors that could weaken or hinder its capacity to address climate change and secure crop production. We conclude that biochar is not a universal solution for global cropland; however, targeted applications in fields, landscapes, or regional scales, especially in low fertility and sandy soils, could realize the benefits of biochar as a climate-smart measure. Terrestrial soil denitrification is of great importance for closing the nitrogen (N) cycle, yet the current understanding of soil denitrification response to N fertilization remains uncertain. While there has been a focus on factors controlling N 2 O fluxes from agricultural soils because of its global warming effect, much less is known about factors controlling total denitrification losses, yet these can be sufficiently large to affect N use efficiency. Here, we collated 353 observations from 74 papers and conducted a global-scale meta-analysis to explore the effects of N fertilization on agricultural soil denitrification (N 2 O + N 2 ) where the acetylene inhibition technique was used. Relative to the control, N fertilization significantly increased soil denitrification by an average of 174%, although the magnitude of this increase differed significantly across environmental and soil conditions. Soil denitrification was more responsive to N fertilization in grasslands than in croplands. The changes in soil denitrification increased exponentially when the rates of synthetic N fertilizer application ≤ 250 kg N ha − 1 , but above this threshold, there were no further increases. The responses of soil denitrification to N fertilization were negatively correlated with soil clay content, C:N ratio, and bulk density. The comparable responses of soil N 2 O emissions (165%) and denitrification to N fertilization resulted in a small insignificant decrease of the N 2 O:N 2 ratio. Organic fertilizer applied with and without synthetic N fertilizer can contribute to lower N 2 O emissions probably by facilitating the last step of soil denitrification to N 2 production. Taken together, we conclude that these findings can provide important insights on regulating soil denitrification, which might contribute to improvement of N use efficiency and elimination of its negative impacts in agro-ecosystems. Through liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) analysis, brain lesions from NMO animal models were analyzed to identify potential biomarkers. Then, we assessed the levels of serum glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP), neurofilament light chain (sNfL), Tau protein (sTau) and Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (sUCHL1) using an ultrasensitive single molecule array (Simoa) of AQP4-IgG + NMOSD patients, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disorder (MOGAD) patients, multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and healthy controls (HCs). Additionally, we further explored the early diagnosis value of these proteins. There were 72 differentially expressed proteins between the NMO and control groups. NfL abundance was elevated when GFAP, UCHL1, and Tau abundance was decreased in the NMO group. Then, we observed that the sGFAP and sUCHL1 levels in patients with NMOSD in the early stage were significantly increased compared to those in control participants. Combined ROCs of the sGFAP, sNfL, and sUCHL1 levels to better predict NMOSD with relapse stages was optimal. Notably, univariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that the sGFAP and sNfL levels were higher in patients with brain lesions, while the sUCHL1 levels were higher in those with spinal cord lesions during recent relapse. Xylan-based preservative films were prepared using xylan, chitosan, citric acid and Sanguisorba officinalis L. polyphenols (SOPs) as main components. According to the trend of change in the physical properties of the films, the optimal composition was found to be: 1% xylan, 0.9% chitosan, 0.26% citric acid, and 0.15% SOPs. The effects of SOP content on the films were also determined. The results showed that incorporation of SOPs decreased the TS and EAB of the film and improved the water vapor barrier performance of the film. Scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurements and thermogravimetric analysis showed that incorporation of SOPs enhanced the compactness, hydrophobicity and thermal stability of the films. Moreover, the films exhibited excellent antibacterial activities in the presence of SOPs. Compared to the polyethylene film, the film delayed spoilage bacteria growth during refrigerated storage of pork, effectively prolonging its shelf life to at least 10 days at 4 °C. The synthesis of heat exchanger networks (HENs) is a complex problem because of the nonlinearity that results from the integer and continuous variables. Here, a bi-level algorithm for the optimal design of a HEN is proposed that attempts to optimize separately the integer and continuous variables on two levels. The master level is a problem-oriented evolution method generating new candidate HEN structures. The slave level is a memetic particle swarm optimization, an improved particle swarm optimization combined with a local search component, improvement of neighbourhood topologies and control parameter preference. The slave level minimizes the total annual cost (TAC) of a given structure received from the master level, and then sends this value back to the master level for structure evolution. The proposed bi-level method is applied to several cases taken from the literature, which demonstrate its reliable search ability in both structure space and continuous variable space and its ability to optimize the system, producing generally lower TACs than previously used methods. Structural ceramics such as carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) are of great importance for supersonic aircraft, where thermal-mechanical coupling behavior of materials affects the service performance of structural ceramics. In order to advance the understanding of the high temperature thermal-mechanical coupling behavior of heterostructure materials (one typical type of structural ceramics), we adopted here an optical observation system to visualize the variation of the gap width between heterostructure materials in arc-heated wind tunnel test. The variation of the gap width (decreasing and then volatility increasing) was observed during the test. Numerical simulation shows that thermal conduction and thermal expansion between the substrate and specimens play a critical role in the evolution of the gap width, as evidenced by the experiments. Additionally, the variation of the gap width under various conditions was given and a one-dimensional unsteady thermodynamic model of double-layer plate was established to reveal the gap evolution mechanism of heterostructure materials. Agricultural soils have experienced large anthropogenic nitrogen (N) inputs in recent decades. Our mechanistic understanding of the effects of added N on the carbon (C) cycle in agricultural soils, especially in the rhizosphere (C excess and N limitation), remains incomplete. The effects of increasing N fertilization on soil CO 2 emissions and microbial biomass in a wheat rhizosphere were investigated in a 56-day incubation experiment. The rhizosphere soil was amended with increasing NH 4 + rates of 0 (Control), 52 (Low N), 104 (Medium N), and 208 μg N g −1 soil (High N). N fertilization exponentially decreased soil CO 2 emissions by 27–42% compared to the control. Microbial biomass was decreased by N fertilization, but depended on the amount of added N and the timing of measurements. N additions caused pronounced negative priming effects ranging from −72 to −113 μg C g −1 over 56 days, corresponding to a decrease in basal respiration of 27%, 35% and 42% for Low, Medium and High N, respectively. The CO 2 fluxes per unit of microbial biomass decreased exponentially with N addition (R 2 = 0.84), indicating increased microbial carbon use efficiency under higher N availability. A literature review and own results showed that negative PEs occurred in the most cases and getting more negative exponentially with increasing N fertilization (n = 158, P < 0.001). In conclusion, increasing N fertilization facilitates C sequestration in soil not only by higher root biomass production, but also by reducing the SOM decomposition in the rhizosphere because of decreased N limitation. Endomorphin-1 (EM-1) was reported to have very high affinity and selectivity for μ-opioid receptor (MOR). However, it remained unclear whether EM-1 and MOR were involved in the pathologies of endometriosis resulting in reduced fertility. In this study, RT-PCR, radioimmunoassay, immunohistochemistry, and Western blot were used, respectively. The results showed that the immune positive cells of EM-1 in hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovaries were significantly increased in endometriosis model rats, accompanied by the increase of plasma level of EM-1 and the decrease of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P). Interestingly, EM-1 was negatively correlated with FSH and LH (p < 0.05). More importantly, Naloxone (MOR antagonist) can significantly reduce the levels of EM-1 in serum, hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovaries, while increased the levels of FSH and LH. In conclusion, our results suggested that EM-1 may be involved in the pathogenesis of the endometriosis-associated infertility by regulating hypothalamus–pituitary–ovarian axis, and Naloxone may be a new alternative drug for the treatment of endometriosis. Infinite dilute diffusion coefficients ( D 12 ) of normal alkanes (C1 to C14) in 1-octanol (C8-OH), as well as primary alkanols (C1-OH to C14-OH) in n-octane (C8) have been studied using molecular dynamics simulation in the temperature range from 298 to 374 K and at atmosphere pressure. Simulated D 12 values for short-chain solute molecules show a good agreement with the experimental ones taken from literature, while for the long-chain solute molecules the overestimation is large. Besides, the structures of solute molecules in above fluid mixtures are investigated by calculating radial distribution functions, radius of gyration, end-to-end distance, and root mean square fluctuation of atomic positions. These results confirm long-chain n -alkanes and n -alkanols molecules are curved and curled up, which we call it flexibility. Moreover, flexibilities for solute molecules (5 ≤ n ≤ 9) are symmetric but for much long-chain solute molecules like n-tetradecane (C14) and 1-tetradecanol (C14-OH) are asymmetric. We believe that strong chain-chain interactions are existed between different long-chain molecules, and it will result in the solute and solvent molecules are intertwisted. Understanding the balance between the priming effect and the retention of added organic carbon (C) in soil is important in evaluating the role of specific practices for terrestrial C sequestration. However, knowledge about the effects of biochar addition on soil net C accumulation following various C input patterns remains limited. We incubated soil with aged and fresh biochar, and added 14 C-labeled glucose at three frequencies over 120 days: single, repeated, and continuous additions. Regardless of glucose addition, the presence of aged or fresh biochar reduced the accumulative CO 2 emissions, by 23% on average, relative to the soil without biochar addition. Compared with the soil without biochar addition, glucose mineralization significantly increased by 1.4–2.0% in the soils with aged biochar, but decreased by 0.1–1.9% in the soils with fresh biochar. Relative to repeated and continuous glucose additions, the single addition may slightly overestimate priming effects, especially during the early incubation period. At the end of incubation, repeated and continuous additions showed a higher net C accumulation than the single addition. Regardless of the glucose addition frequency, net C accumulation was lower in soils with aged or fresh biochar than in the control. In summary, biochar amendment has an interactive effect with glucose addition frequency and thus affects the direction and magnitude of priming. Despite the direct contribution of biochar to C sequestration in soil, the low net C accumulation from glucose in the biochar-amended soil highlights the necessity of C balance accounting. The stability and decomposition of biochar are fundamental to understand its persistence in soil, its contribution to carbon (C) sequestration, and thus its role in the global C cycle. Our current knowledge about the degradability of biochar, however, is limited. Using 128 observations of biochar-derived CO2 from 24 studies with stable (13C) and radioactive (14C) carbon isotopes, we meta-analyzed the biochar decomposition in soil and estimated its mean residence time ( MRT). The decomposed amount of biochar increased logarithmically with experimental duration, and the decomposition rate decreased with time. The biochar decomposition rate varied significantly with experimental duration, feedstock, pyrolysis temperature, and soil clay content. The MRTs of labile and recalcitrant biochar C pools were estimated to be about 108 days and 556 years with pool sizes of 3% and 97%, respectively. These results show that only a small part of biochar is bioavailable and that the remaining 97% contribute directly to long-term C sequestration in soil. The second database (116 observations from 21 studies) was used to evaluate the priming effects after biochar addition. Biochar slightly retarded the mineralization of soil organic matter ( SOM; overall mean: −3.8%, 95% CI = −8.1-0.8%) compared to the soil without biochar addition. Significant negative priming was common for studies with a duration shorter than half a year (−8.6%), crop-derived biochar (−20.3%), fast pyrolysis (−18.9%), the lowest pyrolysis temperature (−18.5%), and small application amounts (−11.9%). In contrast, biochar addition to sandy soils strongly stimulated SOM mineralization by 20.8%. This indicates that biochar stimulates microbial activities especially in soils with low fertility. Furthermore, abiotic and biotic processes, as well as the characteristics of biochar and soils, affecting biochar decomposition are discussed. RT-PCR showed that miR-30c expression was significantly decreased in DN (p < 0.05), consistent with of the results of ISH. Luciferase reporter gene assays showed that CTGF was a validated target of miR-30c. Furthermore, miR-30c overexpression directly decreased CTGF mRNA and protein. Conversely, miR-30c inhibitor enhanced CTGF expression. Interestingly, miR-30c expression was negatively correlated with ACR (r = − 0.870, P = 0.003) and positively correlated with Ccr (r = 0.8230, P = 0.01), whereas it was uncorrelated with KW/BW, SBP, HbA1C, HOMR-IR and T-Cho (p > 0.05). More importantly, miR-30c mimics significantly decreased col-IV, FN, GSI, GBM, GA, MRA/CLA and ACR (p < 0.05) and, in contrast, slightly but significantly increased Ccr (p < 0.05). In conclusion, our results suggested that loss of miR-30c may contribute to the pathogenesis of DN by inhibiting target CTGF expression; replenishing miR-30c may ameliorate renal structure and function by reducing renal fibrosis in DN. Rapid urban development in China has aggravated land subsidence, which poses a potential threat to sustainable urban development. It is imperative to monitor and predict land subsidence over large areas. To address these issues, we chose Henan Province as the study area and applied small baseline subset-interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) technology to obtain land deformation information for monitoring land subsidence from November 2019 to February 2022 with 364 multitrack Sentinel-1A satellite images. The current traditional time-series deep learning models suffer from the problems of (1) poor results in extracting a sequence of information that is too long and (2) the inability to extract the feature information between the influence factor and the land subsidence well. Therefore, a long short-term memory-temporal convolutional network (LSTM-TCN) deep learning model was proposed in order to predict land subsidence and explore the influence of environmental factors, such as the volumetric soil water layer and monthly precipitation, on land subsidence in this study. We used leveling data to verify the effectiveness of SBAS-InSAR in land subsidence monitoring. The results of SBAS-InSAR showed that the land subsidence in Henan Province was obvious and uneven in spatial distribution. The maximum subsidence velocity was −94.54 mm/a, and the uplift velocity was 41.23 mm/a during the monitoring period. Simultaneously, the land subsidence in the study area presented seasonal changes. The rate of land subsidence in spring and summer was greater than that in autumn and winter. The prediction accuracy of the LSTM-TCN model was significantly better than that of the individual LSTM and TCN models because it fully combined their advantages. We used meta-analysis to synthesize 125 studies assessing the responses of rice production to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO]), and the interaction of elevated [CO] with rising temperature or N supply. Elevated [CO] significantly enhanced rice yield by 20 %, despite no significant increase in grain size and harvest index at elevated [CO]. Belowground biomass increased at elevated [CO] to a larger extent than aboveground biomass. Among the Japonica, Indica and Hybrid rice cultivars, Hybrid cultivars generally showed the greatest growth response to elevated [CO]. The maximum enhancement of rice yield was observed at 600-699 ppm [CO] with less benefit in studies with lower or higher elevated [CO] levels. Rice yield responses to elevated [CO] were smaller in FACE compared with the other fumigation methods, largely associated with lower photosynthesis. Increases in rice yield at elevated [CO] were constrained by limited N supply. The detrimental effect of rising temperature on spikelet fertility and harvest index were not be fully counteracted by elevated [CO] effects. Together, the results of this meta-analysis suggest that rising [CO] and warming accompanied by low N supply are unlikely to stimulate rice production, especially with the current trajectory of emissions scenarios. • The origin of color crosstalk of high temperature multi-channel synchronous measurement is analyzed in detail. • Developing a novel method to realize the synchronous measurement of temperature and deformation while addressing the challenge of color crosstalk. • Establishing a set of correction equations to obtain the crosstalk-eliminated light intensity of each channel. • Synchronous measurement of temperature and deformation is accomplished with the thermal heating experiment up to 1100 °C. Synchronous measurement of temperature and deformation at elevated temperatures based on the noncontact optical method can be achieved through the allocation of channels R, G , and B for a color camera. Channels R and G are used for the radiation-based temperature measurement, while channel B is adopted for the deformation measurement. However, the existence of color crosstalk, which is mainly caused by the color camera's spectral response and the use of the narrow-band filtering technique, has a significant influence on the accuracy of temperature and deformation calculations. In this work, the color crosstalk effect in high-temperature optical imaging is analyzed, and a crosstalk correction algorithm based on grayscale calibration is performed on the different color channels (channels R, G, and B) of the color image. By solving the calibration equations, three corrected color channels are generated for a high-precision temperature and deformation calculation. A flame heating experiment of a C/SiC material up to 1100 °C is carried out to validate the applicability accuracy of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate the color crosstalk between different channels and provide a non-contact, full-field, and synchronous measurement of temperature and deformation with higher accuracy than the existing methods. Tridentate ligands 4-R1-6-R2-2-{[ trans-2-(isoindolin-2-yl)-1,2-diphenylethylimino]methyl}phenol [R1 = R2 = H, H( La); R1 = R2 = tert-butyl, H( Lb); R1 = Ph, R2 = H, H( Lc)] in which a substituted salicylaldimine moiety and an isoindoline are linked by a trans-1,2-diphenylethylene moiety have been prepared. Deprotonation of these tridentate ligands H( La)-H( Lc) by NaH at room temperature in tetrahydrofuran (THF), followed by treatment with 1 equiv. of [(PPh3)2NiX2] (X = Cl, Br, I) at room temperature afforded the desired nickel complexes [(L)NiX] (X = Cl, L = La, 1; X = Cl, L = Lb, 2; X = Cl, L = Lc, 3; X = Br, L = Lb, 4; X = I, L = Lb, 5) in moderate yields. The structures of 2 and 4 were unequivocally confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state. The metal atom has a distorted square-planar coordination geometry and is coordinated to the two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom from the tridentate ligand and one halide atom. Dehydrogenation of the chelate tridentate ligand ( Lb) in the presence of oxygen afforded the corresponding nickel complexes [( Lb*)NiX] (X = Br, 6; X = I, 7). X-ray analysis showed that in these complexes the two bridged benzylic carbon atoms of ( Lb)- were oxidized and a cis-stilbene moiety, which includes a C=C double bond (1.205-1.268 Å) was formed. These nickel complexes with such trans-1,2-diphenylethylene bridged tridentate ligands proved to be active catalysts for ethylene oligomerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) and produced butene and hexene with catalytic activities of 0.49 × 105-3.25 × 105 g mol-1 Ni h-1 at 30 °C, under 20 bar of ethylene, and with an MAO/Ni ratio of 250. Background: Worldwide, there is an increasing interest in using biochar in agriculture to help mitigate global warming and improve crop productivity. Methods: The effects of biochar on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and rice and wheat yields were assessed using outdoor pot experiments in two different soils (upland soil vs. paddy soil) and an aerobic incubation experiment in the paddy soil. Results: Biochar addition to the upland soil increased methane (CH) emissions by 37 % during the rice season, while it had no effect on CH emissions during the wheat season. Biochar amendment decreased nitrous oxide (NO) emissions up to 54 % and 53 % during the rice and wheat seasons, respectively, but had no effect on the ecosystem respiration in either crop season. In the aerobic incubation experiment, biochar addition significantly decreased NO emissions and increased carbon dioxide (CO) emissions from the paddy soil ( P < 0.01) without urea nitrogen. Biochar addition increased grain yield and biomass if applied with nitrogen fertilizer. Averaged over the two soils, biochar amendments increased the production of rice and wheat by 12 % and 17 %, respectively, and these increases can be partly attributed to the increases in soil nitrate retention. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that although biochar increased the global warming potential at high nitrogen fertilizer application, biochar incorporation significantly decreased NO emissions while promoting crop production. Methane (CH) and nitrous oxide (NO) emissions from a paddy nursery at the rice seedling stage were measured on a daily basis by using the conventional rice cultivar Nangeng 56 under both conventional (NG-C) and reduced (NG-R) sowing density, and the hybrid rice Changyou 3 under both conventional (CY-C) and reduced (CY-R) sowing density. High NO and CH emissions were observed during the first and last 2 weeks, respectively. Cumulative CH emissions were significantly ( P < 0.001) affected by sowing density rather than by the rice cultivar. Cumulative CH emissions reached 68.2 kg C ha in the CY-C treatment and 121.6 kg C ha in the NG-C treatment, which were significantly ( P < 0.001) higher than the emissions at reduced sowing densities (15.9 kg C ha in the CY-R treatment and 20.9 kg C ha in the NG-R treatment). Under the conventional sowing density, cumulative CH emissions during the seedling stage were comparable to data of rice-growing season. Both the rice cultivar and the sowing density significantly ( P < 0.05-0.01) affected cumulative NO emissions. Relative to the CY cultivar, the NG cultivar increased global warming potential (GWP) over a 100-year horizon by 62.1% and 70.7% under the reduced and conventional sowing densities, respectively. The GWP of NO and CH during the seedling stage was equivalent to the GWP of the entire rice-growing season in this region, indicating that the seedling stage is an important greenhouse gas emission source of rice agriculture. Abstract: The estimation of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions based on specific cropping systems is important for accurate national N2O budgets. Intensively managed vegetable cultivation is responsible for large N2O emissions in mainland China. However, little information can be obtained on the nationwide estimation of direct N2O emissions from vegetable fields. Estimates of fertilizer-induced direct N2O emissions from vegetable fields in mainland China were thus obtained by compiling and analyzing reported data in peer-reviewed journals and research reports. The results indicated that the seasonal N2O emissions from vegetable fields significantly increased with nitrogen (N) fertilizer application (p < 0.0001). According to the ordinary least squares (OLS) model, the fertilizer-induced emission factor (EF) and background emissions of N2O were estimated to be 0.55 ± 0.05% and 1.067 ± 0.277 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. The EF was reduced and the background emission of N2O increased when the measurement duration was prolonged from ≤100 d to >100 and ≤200 d. Comparable results were obtained by the maximum likelihood (ML) model, with an EF of 0.49 ± 0.06% and background N2O emissions of 1.228 ± 0.189 kg N ha−1 yr−1. Based on the OLS-derived parameters, the fertilizer-induced direct emissions and background emissions of N2O were estimated to be 66.95 Gg N and 19.63 Gg N, respectively, in 2009, and the annual N2O emissions were much higher in the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hebei and Sichuan. The estimated N2O emissions from vegetable fields accounted for 21.4% of the total direct N2O emissions from Chinese croplands, with large uncertainties. Therefore, the EF and background emissions of N2O for each cropping system, particularly for intensively managed vegetable fields, should be specifically determined for accurate national N2O inventories. Impacts of biochar addition on nitrous oxide (NO) and carbon dioxide (CO) emissions from paddy soils are not well documented. Here, we have hypothesized that NO emissions from paddy soils could be depressed by biochar incorporation during the upland crop season without any effect on CO emissions. Therefore, we have carried out the 60-day aerobic incubation experiment to investigate the influences of rice husk biochar incorporation (50 t ha) into two typical paddy soils with or without nitrogen (N) fertilizer on NO and CO evolution from soil. Biochar addition significantly decreased NO emissions during the 60-day period by 73.1% as an average value while the inhibition ranged from 51.4% to 93.5% ( P < 0.05-0.01) in terms of cumulative emissions. Significant interactions were observed between biochar, N fertilizer, and soil type indicating that the effect of biochar addition on NO emissions was influenced by soil type. Moreover, biochar addition did not increase CO emissions from both paddy soils ( P > 0.05) in terms of cumulative emissions. Subtropical agricultural soils are hotspots of nitrogen(N)-oxide emissions, whereas the spatiotemporal variability and driving factors of their emissions in different cultivation systems are poorly understood. Here, to assess the magnitude and pattern of soil N-oxide emissions, we conducted measurements of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and nitric oxide (NO) fluxes from the soil between rows and under the canopy of tea plants in two subtropical tea plantations over a one-year period. Results showed that N 2 O and NO emissions from the soil between rows were 32.6 and 9.1 kg N ha−1 for the Yixing (YX) site and 33.9 and 9.9 kg N ha−1 for the Jurong (JR) site, respectively. Across both sites, N 2 O and NO emissions from the soil between rows were 2.8–5.2 and 1.4–4.0 times, respectively, larger than those from the soil under the canopy. We attributed greater N-oxide emissions from the soil between rows mainly to increased soil mineral N and water contents as compared to the soil under the canopy. On average, N 2 O and NO emissions from the soil under the canopy accounted for 36% and 44% of the total losses from the entire field, respectively. For the entire tea field, N 2 O emissions were 12.6 and 15.7 kg N ha−1 for the YX and JR sites, respectively, but the difference was not statistically different. In contrast, NO emissions from the YX and JR sites were 3.8 and 5.7 kg N ha−1 and differed significantly between the two sites, which was due to higher NO emissions from the soil under the canopy in the JR site. The greatest N-oxide fluxes occurred in the spring and summer seasons after topdressing when soil conditions were conducive to microbial N-oxide production. The structural equation modeling analyses suggested that the variables explaining the variances of soil N-oxide emissions were different between the two tea plantations. Our results indicated that microbial nitrification and abiotic chemodenitrification processes were likely the major pathways leading to N-oxide emissions in the soil under the canopy. Our findings highlight the importance of N-oxide fluxes simultaneously taken from the soil between rows and under the canopy and implementing mitigation practices in subtropical tea plantations. Non-contact measurement method at elevated temperatures has been widely studied, which provides an efficient means for evaluating the properties of high-temperature materials. However, such high-temperature environment-induced challenges as strong light radiation and air disturbance may cause a huge quality decrease to the captured images based on the optical systems. As an important application of neural networks, Denoising Convolutional Neural Networks (DNCNN) has shown a considerable performance in conventional image denoising. In this work, an optimized DNCNN method based on the sub-region processing and transfer learning was proposed and applied in the high-temperature measurement. The thermal heating experiment of the SiC material was carried out to validate the applicability and accuracy of the method, while the synchronous measurement of temperature and deformation is realized. Activated carbons (ACs) are widely applied in the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from industrial processes, because of their high adsorption capacity, low cost and reusability. Their poor thermal stability under oxidative conditions is a limiting factor and often leads to fire risk in real applications. Here, Si-modification was performed over a wood-derived AC material, and a series of modified ACs with different Si/C mass ratios (0.1–0.9) were prepared via a hydrothermal route. Physicochemical characteristics of Si/C samples was examined by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR and N 2 -physisorption measurements. As compared to pristine AC, Si-modified ACs showed enhanced fire resistance, and an increase of ignition temperature by 79 ℃ was achieved at a Si/C mass ratio of 0.9. A combination of TEM, XPS and FTIR characterization suggests that the formation of amorphous SiO 2 nanoparticles and SiC species on the surface was responsible for the enhanced fire resistance of Si-modified ACs. By increasing microporosity, Si-modification also significantly improved the adsorption capacity of toluene as a model VOC molecule. Static and dynamic adsorption experiments were performed to understand the adsorption kinetics of the Si-modified ACs. Reusability tests showed that the desorption rate of the modified AC remained at nearly 80% even after five cycles of repeated adsorption-desorption, indicating that the modified AC has a great potential for industrial applications.
