Search

Space weather is a multidisciplinary research area connecting scientists from across heliophysics domains seeking a coherent understanding of our space environment that can also serve modern life and society's needs. COSPAR's ISWAT (International Space Weather Action Teams) 'clusters' focus attention on different areas of space weather study while ensuring the coupled system is broadly addressed via regular communications and interactions. The ISWAT cluster "H3: Radiation Environment in the Heliosphere" (https://www.iswat-cospar.org/h3) has been working to provide a scientific platform to understand, characterize and predict the energetic particle radiation in the heliosphere with the practical goal of mitigating radiation risks associated with areospace activities, satellite industry and human space explorations. In particular, present approaches help us understand the physical phenomena at large, optimizing the output of multi-viewpoint observations and pushing current models to their limits. In this paper, we review the scientific aspects of the radiation environment in the heliosphere covering four different radiation types: Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs), Ground Level Enhancement (GLE, a type of SEP events with energies high enough to trigger the enhancement of ground-level detectors), Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and Anomalous Cosmic Rays (ACRs). We focus on related advances in the research community in the past 10-20 years and what we still lack in terms of understanding and predictive capabilities. Finally we also consider some recommendations related to the improvement of both observational and modeling capabilities in the field of space radiation environment.

We report the smallest coronal jets ever observed in the quiet Sun with recent high resolution observations from the High Resolution Telescopes (HRI-EUV and HRI-Ly{\alpha}) of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) onboard Solar Orbiter. In the HRI-EUV (174 {\AA}) images, these microjets usually appear as nearly collimated structures with brightenings at their footpoints. Their average lifetime, projected speed, width, and maximum length are 4.6 min, 62 km s^(-1), 1.0 Mm, and 7.7 Mm, respectively. Inverted-Y shaped structures and moving blobs can be identified in some events. A subset of these events also reveal signatures in the HRI-Ly{\alpha} (H I Ly{\alpha} at 1216 {\AA}) images and the extreme ultraviolet images taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Our differential emission measure analysis suggests a multi-thermal nature and an average density of ~1.4x10^9 cm^(-3) for these microjets. Their thermal and kinetic energies were estimated to be ~3.9x10^24 erg and ~2.9x10^23 erg, respectively, which are of the same order of the released energy predicted by the nanoflare theory. Most events appear to be located at the edges of network lanes and magnetic flux concentrations, suggesting that these coronal microjets are likely generated by magnetic reconnection between small-scale magnetic loops and the adjacent network field., Comment: Accepted by ApJL, 19 pages, 6 figures, and 2 tables

The scaling anisotropy is crucial to interpret the nonlinear interactions in solar wind turbulence. Previous observations provide diverse results and the structure function analyses are also reported to be an approach to investigate the scaling anisotropy based on a local magnetic field. However, the determination of the sampling angle with respect to the local background magnetic field requires that the observed time series for the average are time stationary. Whether or not this required time stationarity is compatible with the measurements has not been investigated. Here we utilize the second-order structure function method to study the scaling anisotropy with a time-stationary background field.We analyze 88 fast solar wind intervals each with time durations larger than 2 days measured by WIND spacecraft in the period 2005-2018. We calculate the local magnetic field as the average of the time series B whose time stationarity is fulfilled by our criterion phi smaller than 10 deg (phi is the angle between the two averaged magnetic fields after cutting B into two halves). We find for the first time the isotropic scaling feature of the magnetic-trace structure functions with scaling indices -0.63 pm 0.08 and -0.70 pm 0.04, respectively, with the local magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the solar wind velocity directions. The scaling for the velocity-trace structure functions is also isotropic and the indices are -0.47 pm 0.10 and -0.51 pm 0.09. We also find that with increasing phi threshold to 90 deg, the scaling index of the magnetic-trace structure function in the parallel direction decreases to -0.81, while the rms of the instantaneous angle between magnetic field and solar wind velocity increases up to 45deg at the timescale 150 s, indicating a mix of perpendicular measurements into parallel ones at large scales., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, published by The Astrophysical Journal

Understanding many physical processes in the solar atmosphere requires determination of the magnetic field in each atmospheric layer. However, direct measurements of the magnetic field in the Sun's corona are difficult to obtain. Using observations with the Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter, we have determined the spatial distribution of the plasma density in the corona, and the phase speed of the prevailing transverse magnetohydrodynamic waves within the plasma. We combine these measurements to map the plane-of-sky component of the global coronal magnetic field. The derived field strengths in the corona from 1.05 to 1.35 solar radii are mostly 1-4 Gauss. The self-correlation level contours at the 1010 cm scale reveal a 3D isotropic feature in the slow solar wind and a quasi-anisotropic feature in the fast solar wind. However, the 1010 cm scale is approximately near the lowfrequency break (outer scale of turbulence cascade), especially in the fast wind. How the self-correlation level contours behave with dependence on the scales in the inertial range of solar wind turbulence remains unknown. Here we present the 3D self-correlation function level contours and their dependence on the scales in the inertial range for the first time. We use data at 1 au from instruments on the Wind spacecraft in the period 2005-2018. We show the 3D isotropic self-correlation level contours of the magnetic field in the inertial range of both slow and fast solar wind turbulence. We also find that the self-correlation level contours of the velocity in the inertial range present 2D anisotropy with an elongation in the perpendicular direction and 2D isotropy in the plane perpendicular to the mean magnetic field. These results indicate differences between the magnetic field and the velocity, providing new clues to interpret the solar wind turbulence on the inertial scale., Comment: 4 figures

The self-correlation level contours at $10^{10}\ \mathrm{cm}$ scale reveal a 2-D isotropic feature in both the slow solar wind fluctuations and the fast solar wind fluctuations. However, this 2-D isotropic feature is obtained based on the assumption of axisymmetry with respect to the mean magnetic field. Whether the self-correlation level contours are still 3-D isotropic remains unknown. Here we perform for the first time a 3-D self-correlation level contours analysis on the solar wind turbulence. We construct a 3-D coordinate system based on the mean magnetic field direction and the maximum fluctuation direction identified by the minimum-variance analysis (MVA) method. We use data with 1-hour intervals observed by WIND spacecraft from 2005 to 2018. We find, on one hand, in the slow solar wind, the self-correlation level contour surfaces for both the magnetic field and the velocity field are almost spherical, which indicates a 3-D isotropic feature. On the other hand, there is a weak elongation in one of the perpendicular direction in the fast solar wind fluctuations. We calculate the interplanetary magnetic field path lengths traveled by electrons in solar electron events detected by the WIND 3DP instrument from $1994$ to $2016$. The velocity dispersion analysis method is applied for electrons at energies of $\sim$ $27$ keV to $310$ keV. Previous velocity dispersion analyses employ the onset times, which are often affected by instrumental effects and the pre-existing background flux, leading to large uncertainties. We propose a new method here. Instead of using the peak or onset time, we apply the velocity dispersion analysis to the times that correspond to the rising phase of the fluxes that are a fraction, $\eta$, of the peak flux. We perform statistical analysis on selected events whose calculated path lengths have uncertainties smaller than $0.1$ AU. The mean and standard deviation, ($\mu$, $\sigma$), of the calculated path lengths corresponding to $\eta=$ $3/4$, $1/2$, and $1/3$ of the peak flux is ($1.17$ AU, $0.17$ AU), ($1.11$ AU, $0.14$ AU), and ($1.06$ AU, $0.15$ AU). The distribution of the calculated path lengths is also well fitted by a Gaussian distribution for the $\eta=3/4$ and $1/3$ cases. These results suggest that in these electron events the interplanetary magnetic field topology is close to the nominal Parker spiral with little field line meandering. Our results have important implications for particles' perpendicular diffusion.

Ellerman bombs (EBs) are small-scale intense brightenings in H$\alpha$ wing images, which are generally believed to be signatures of magnetic reconnection events around the temperature minimum region of the solar atmosphere. They have a flame-like morphology when observed near the solar limb. Recent observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) reveal another type of small-scale reconnection events, termed UV bursts, in the lower atmosphere. Though previous observations have shown a clear coincidence of some UV bursts and EBs, the exact relationship between these two phenomena is still under debate. We investigate the spatial and temporal relationship between flame-like EBs and UV bursts using joint near-limb observations between the 1.6--meter Goode Solar Telescope (GST) and IRIS. In total 161 EBs have been identified from the GST observations, and 20 of them reveal signatures of UV bursts in the IRIS images. Interestingly, we find that these UV bursts have a tendency to appear at the upper parts of their associated flame-like EBs. The intensity variations of most EB-related UV bursts and their corresponding EBs match well. Solar ultraviolet (UV) bursts are small-scale compact brightenings in transition region images. The spectral profiles of transition region lines in these bursts are significantly enhanced and broadened, often with chromospheric absorption lines such as Ni~{\sc{ii}} 1335.203 and 1393.330 {\AA} superimposed. We investigate the properties of several UV bursts using a coordinated observation of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and \textit{Hinode} on 2015 February 7. We have identified 12 UV bursts, and 11 of them reveal small blueshifts of the Ni~{\sc{ii}} absorption lines. However, the Ni~{\sc{ii}} lines in one UV burst exhibit obvious redshifts of $\sim$20 km s$^{-1}$, which appear to be related to the cold plasma downflows observed in the IRIS slit-jaw images. We also examine the three-dimensional magnetic field topology using a magnetohydrostatic model, and find that some UV bursts are associated with magnetic null points or bald patches. In addition, we find that these UV bursts reveal no obvious coronal signatures from the observations of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board SDO and the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board \textit{Hinode}., Comment: will appear in the journal of Science China Technological Sciences

We present unprecedented high-resolution TiO images and Fe I 1565 nm spectropolarimetric data of two light bridges taken by the 1.6-m Goode Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. In the first light bridge (LB1), we find striking knot-like dark structures within the central dark lane. Many dark knots show migration away from the penumbra along the light bridge. The sizes, intensity depressions and apparent speeds of their proper motion along the light bridges of 33 dark knots identified from the TiO images are mainly in the ranges of 80$\sim$200~km, 30\%$\sim$50\%, and 0.3$\sim$1.2~km~s$^{-1}$, respectively. In the second light bridge (LB2), a faint central dark lane and striking transverse intergranular lanes were observed. These intergranular lanes have sizes and intensity depressions comparable to those of the dark knots in LB1, and also migrate away from the penumbra at similar speeds. Our observations reveal that LB2 is made up of a chain of evolving convection cells, as indicated by patches of blue shift surrounded by narrow lanes of red shift. The central dark lane generally corresponds to blueshifts, supporting the previous suggestion of central dark lanes being the top parts of convection upflows. In contrast, the intergranular lanes are associated with redshifts and located at two sides of each convection cell. The magnetic fields are stronger in intergranular lanes than in the central dark lane. These results suggest that these intergranular lanes are manifestations of convergent convective downflows in the light bridge. We present an investigation of a coronal cavity observed above the western limb in the coronal red line Fe X 6374 {\AA} using a telescope of Peking University and in the green line Fe XIV 5303 {\AA} using a telescope of Yunnan Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences during the total solar eclipse on 2017 August 21. A series of magnetic field models are constructed based on the magnetograms taken by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) one week before the eclipse. The model field lines are then compared with coronal structures seen in images taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board SDO and in our coronal red line images. The best-fit model consists of a flux rope with a twist angle of 3.1$\pi$, which is consistent with the most probable value of the total twist angle of interplanetary flux ropes observed at 1 AU. Linear polarization of the Fe XIII 10747 {\AA} line calculated from this model shows a "lagomorphic" signature that is also observed by the Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter of the High Altitude Observatory. We also find a ring-shaped structure in the line-of-sight velocity of Fe XIII 10747 {\AA}, which implies hot plasma flows along a helical magnetic field structure, in the cavity. These results suggest that the magnetic structure of the cavity is a highly twisted flux rope, which may erupt eventually. Solid evidence of magnetic reconnection is rarely reported within sunspots, the darkest regions with the strongest magnetic fields and lowest temperatures in the solar atmosphere. Using the world's largest solar telescope, the 1.6-meter Goode Solar Telescope, we detect prevalent reconnection through frequently occurring fine-scale jets in the H${\alpha}$ line wings at light bridges, the bright lanes that may divide the dark sunspot core into multiple parts. Many jets have an inverted Y-shape, shown by models to be typical of reconnection in a unipolar field environment. Simultaneous spectral imaging data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph show that the reconnection drives bidirectional flows up to 200~km~s$^{-1}$, and that the weakly ionized plasma is heated by at least an order of magnitude up to $\sim$80,000 K. Such highly dynamic reconnection jets and efficient heating should be properly accounted for in future modeling efforts of sunspots. Our observations also reveal that the surge-like activity previously reported above light bridges in some chromospheric passbands such as the H${\alpha}$ core has two components: the ever-present short surges likely to be related to the upward leakage of magnetoacoustic waves from the photosphere, and the occasionally occurring long and fast surges that are obviously caused by the intermittent reconnection jets., Comment: ApJ, 8 figures

High-resolution observations of the solar chromosphere and transition region often reveal surge-like oscillatory activities above sunspot light bridges. These oscillations are often interpreted as intermittent plasma jets produced by quasi-periodic magnetic reconnection. We have analyzed the oscillations above a light bridge in a sunspot using data taken by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The chromospheric 2796\AA{}~images show surge-like activities above the entire light bridge at any time, forming an oscillating wall. Within the wall we often see that the Mg~{\sc{ii}}~k 2796.35\AA{}~line core first experiences a large blueshift, and then gradually decreases to zero shift before increasing to a red shift of comparable magnitude. Such a behavior suggests that the oscillations are highly nonlinear and likely related to shocks. In the 1400\AA{}~passband which samples emission mainly from the Si~{\sc{iv}}~ion, the most prominent feature is a bright oscillatory front ahead of the surges. We find a positive correlation between the acceleration and maximum velocity of the moving front, which is consistent with numerical simulations of upward propagating slow-mode shock waves. The Si~{\sc{iv}} 1402.77\AA{}~line profile is generally enhanced and broadened in the bright front, which might be caused by turbulence generated through compression or by the shocks. These results, together with the fact that the oscillation period stays almost unchanged over a long duration, lead us to propose that the surge-like oscillations above light bridges are caused by shocked p-mode waves leaked from the underlying photosphere., Comment: 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

Observations of solar wind turbulence indicate the existence of multi-scale pressure-balanced structures (PBSs) in the solar wind. In this work, we conduct a numerical simulation to investigate multi-scale PBSs and in particular their formation in compressive MHD turbulence. By the use of a higher order Godunov code Athena,a driven compressible turbulence with an imposed uniform guide field is simulated. The simulation results show that both the magnetic pressure and the thermal pressure exhibit a turbulent spectrum with a Kolmogorov-like power law, and that in many regions of the simulation domain they are anti-correlated. The computed wavelet cross-coherence spectrum of the magnetic pressure and the thermal pressure, as well as their space series, indicate the existence of multi-scale PBSs, with the small PBSs being embedded in the large ones. These multi-scale PBSs are likely to be related with the highly oblique-propagating slow-mode waves, as the traced multi-scale PBS is found to be traveling in a certain direction at a speed consistent with that predicted theoretically for a slow-mode wave propagating in the same direction.
