We consider the contractibility of Vietoris-Rips complexes of dense subsets of $(\mathbb{R}^n,\ell_1)$ with sufficiently large scales. This is motivated by a question by Matthew Zaremsky regarding whether for each $n$ natural there is a $r_n>0$ so that the Vietoris-Rips complex of $(\mathbb{Z}^n,\ell_1)$ at scale $r$ is contractible for all $r\geq r_n$. We approach this question using results that relates to the neighborhood of embeddings into hyperconvex metric space of a metric space $X$ and its connection to the Vietoris-Rips complex of $X$. In this manner, we provide positive answers to the question above for the case $n=2$ and $3$.

The majority of classic tensor CP decomposition models are designed for squared loss, employing Euclidean distance as a local proximal term. However, the Euclidean distance is unsuitable for the generalized loss function applicable to various types of real-world data, such as integer and binary data. Consequently, algorithms developed under the squared loss are not easily adaptable to handle these generalized losses, partially due to the lack of the gradient Lipschitz continuity. This paper considers the generalized tensor CP decomposition. We use the Bregman distance as the proximal term and propose an inertial accelerated block randomized stochastic mirror descent algorithm (iTableSMD). Within a broader multi-block variance reduction and inertial acceleration framework, we demonstrate the sublinear convergence rate for the subsequential sequence produced by the iTableSMD algorithm. We further show that iTableSMD requires at most O({\epsilon}^{-2}) iterations in expectation to attain an {\epsilon}-stationary point and establish the global convergence of the sequence. Numerical experiments on real datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is efficient and achieve better performance than the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in the exploration of Nonlinear Matrix Decomposition (NMD) due to its close ties with neural networks. NMD aims to find a low-rank matrix from a sparse nonnegative matrix with a per-element nonlinear function. A typical choice is the Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation function. To address over-fitting in the existing ReLU-based NMD model (ReLU-NMD), we propose a Tikhonov regularized ReLU-NMD model, referred to as ReLU-NMD-T. Subsequently, we introduce a momentum accelerated algorithm for handling the ReLU-NMD-T model. A distinctive feature, setting our work apart from most existing studies, is the incorporation of both positive and negative momentum parameters in our algorithm. Our numerical experiments on real-world datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm. A Reeb graph is a graphical representation of a scalar function on a topological space that encodes the topology of the level sets. A Reeb space is a generalization of the Reeb graph to a multiparameter function. In this paper, we propose novel constructions of Reeb graphs and Reeb spaces that incorporate the use of a measure. Specifically, we introduce measure-theoretic Reeb graphs and Reeb spaces when the domain or the range is modeled as a metric measure space (i.e.,~a metric space equipped with a measure). Our main goal is to enhance the robustness of the Reeb graph and Reeb space in representing the topological features of a scalar field while accounting for the distribution of the measure. We first introduce a Reeb graph with local smoothing and prove its stability with respect to the interleaving distance. We then prove the stability of a Reeb graph of a metric measure space with respect to the measure, defined using the distance to a measure or the kernel distance to a measure, respectively.

In this paper, we explore a specific optimization problem that involves the combination of a differentiable nonconvex function and a nondifferentiable function. The differentiable component lacks a global Lipschitz continuous gradient, posing challenges for optimization. To address this issue and accelerate the convergence, we propose a Bregman proximal stochastic gradient method with extrapolation (BPSGE), which only requires smooth adaptivity of the differentiable part. Under the variance reduction framework, we not only analyze the subsequential and global convergence of the proposed algorithm under certain conditions, but also analyze the sublinear convergence rate of the subsequence, and the complexity of the algorithm, revealing that the BPSGE algorithm requires at most O(epsilon\^\,(-2)) iterations in expectation to attain an epsilon-stationary point. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, we conduct numerical experiments on three real-world applications: graph regularized nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), matrix factorization with weakly-convex regularization, and NMF with nonconvex sparsity constraints. The stripe noise existing in remote sensing images badly degrades the visual quality and restricts the precision of data analysis. Therefore, many destriping models have been proposed in recent years. In contrast to these existing models, in this paper, we propose a nonconvex model with a DC function (i.e., the difference of convex functions) structure to remove the strip noise. To solve this model, we make use of the DC structure and apply an inexact proximal majorization-minimization algorithm with each inner subproblem solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers. It deserves mentioning that we design an implementable stopping criterion for the inner subproblem, while the convergence can still be guaranteed. Although deep neural networks have achieved super-human performance on many classification tasks, they often exhibit a worrying lack of robustness towards adversarially generated examples. Thus, considerable effort has been invested into reformulating Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM) into an adversarially robust framework. Recently, attention has shifted towards approaches which interpolate between the robustness offered by adversarial training and the higher clean accuracy and faster training times of ERM. In this paper, we take a fresh and geometric view on one such method -- Probabilistically Robust Learning (PRL) (Robey et al., ICML, 2022). We propose a geometric framework for understanding PRL, which allows us to identify a subtle flaw in its original formulation and to introduce a family of probabilistic nonlocal perimeter functionals to address this. We prove existence of solutions using novel relaxation methods and study properties as well as local limits of the introduced perimeters.

We generate anti-self-polar polytopes via a numerical implementation of the gradient flow induced by the diameter functional on the space of all finite subsets of the sphere, and prove related results on the critical points of the diameter functional as well as results about the combinatorics of such polytopes. We explore emerging relationships between the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, Borsuk-Ulam theorems, and Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes. The Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ can be lower bounded by the distortion of (possibly discontinuous) functions between them. The more these functions must distort the metrics, the larger the Gromov-Hausdorff distance must be. Topology has few tools to obstruct the existence of discontinuous functions. However, an arbitrary function $f\colon X\to Y$ induces a continuous map between their Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes, where the allowable choices of scale parameters depend on how much the function $f$ distorts distances. We can then use equivariant topology to obstruct the existence of certain continuous maps between Vietoris-Rips complexes. With these ideas we bound how discontinuous an odd map between spheres $S^k\to S^n$ with $k>n$ must be, generalizing a result by Dubins and Schwarz (1981), which is the case $k=n+1$. As an application, we recover or improve upon all of the lower bounds from Lim, M\'emoli, and Smith (2022) on the Gromov-Hausdorff distances between spheres of different dimensions. We also provide new upper bounds on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres of adjacent dimensions.

Many economic and scientific problems involve the analysis of high-dimensional functional time series, where the number of functional variables $p$ diverges as the number of serially dependent observations $n$ increases. In this paper, we present a novel functional factor model for high-dimensional functional time series that maintains and makes use of the functional and dynamic structure to achieve great dimension reduction and find the latent factor structure. To estimate the number of functional factors and the factor loadings, we propose a fully functional estimation procedure based on an eigenanalysis for a nonnegative definite and symmetric matrix. Our proposal involves a weight matrix to improve the estimation efficiency and tackle the issue of heterogeneity, the rationale of which is illustrated by formulating the estimation from a novel regression perspective. Asymptotic properties of the proposed method are studied when $p$ diverges at some polynomial rate as $n$ increases. To provide a parsimonious model and enhance interpretability for near-zero factor loadings, we impose sparsity assumptions on the factor loading space and then develop a regularized estimation procedure with theoretical guarantees when $p$ grows exponentially fast relative to $n.$ Finally, we demonstrate that our proposed estimators significantly outperform the competing methods through both simulations and applications to a U.K. temperature data set and a Japanese mortality data set.

The smallest hyperconvex metric space containing a given metric space X is called the tight span of X. It is known that tight spans have many nice geometric and topological properties, and they are gradually becoming a target of research of both the metric geometry community and the topological/geometric data analysis community. In this paper, we study the tight span of n-spheres (with either geodesic metric or l infinity-metric).

A metric thickening of a given metric space $X$ is any metric space admitting an isometric embedding of $X$. Thickenings have found use in applications of topology to data analysis, where one may approximate the shape of a dataset via the persistent homology of an increasing sequence of spaces. We introduce two new families of metric thickenings, the $p$-Vietoris-Rips and $p$-\v{C}ech metric thickenings for all $1\le p\le \infty$, which include all measures on $X$ whose $p$-diameter or $p$-radius is bounded from above, equipped with an optimal transport metric. The $p$-diameter (resp. $p$-radius) of a measure is a certain $\ell_p$ relaxation of the usual notion of diameter (resp. radius) of a subset of a metric space. These families recover the previously studied Vietoris-Rips and \v{C}ech metric thickenings when $p=\infty$. As our main contribution, we prove a stability theorem for the persistent homology of $p$-Vietoris-Rips and $p$-\v{C}ech metric thickenings, which is novel even in the case $p=\infty$. In the specific case $p=2$, we prove a Hausmann-type theorem for thickenings of manifolds, and we derive the complete list of homotopy types of the $2$-Vietoris-Rips thickenings of the $n$-sphere as the scale increases.

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are a rapidly emerging class of functional materials consisting of multiple principal cations. The original paradigm of HEOs assumes cationic occupations with the highest possible configurational entropy allowed by the composition and crystallographic structure. However, the fundamental question remains on the actual degree of configurational disorder in HEOs, especially, in systems with a low enthalpy barriers for cation anti-site mixing. Considering the experimental limitations due to the presence of multiple principal cations in HEOs, here we utilize a robust and cross-referenced characterization approach using soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, neutron powder diffraction and SQUID magnetometry to study the competition between crystal field stabilization energy and configurational entropy governing the cation occupation in a spinel HEO (S-HEO), (Co$_{0.2}$Cr$_{0.2}$Fe$_{0.2}$Mn$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$)$_3$O$_4$. In contrast to the previous studies, the derived complete structural and spin-electronic model, (Co$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$)(Cr$_{0.3}$Fe$_{0.1}$Mn$_{0.3}$Ni$_{0.3}$)$_2$O$_4$, highlights a significant deviation from the hitherto assumed paradigm of entropy-driven non-preferential distribution of cations in HEOs. An immediate correlation of this result can be drawn with bulk as well as the local element specific magnetic properties, which are intrinsically dictated by cationic occupations in spinels. The real local lattice picture presented here provides an alternate viewpoint on ionic arrangement in HEOs, which is of fundamental interest for predicting and designing their structure-dependent functionalities.
