The sky is a natural heat sink that has been extensively used for passive radiative cooling of households. A lot of focus has been on maximizing the radiative cooling power of roof coating in the hot daytime using static, cooling-optimized material properties. However, the resultant overcooling in cold night or winter times exacerbates the heating cost, especially in climates where heating dominates energy consumption. We approached thermal regulation from an all-season perspective by developing a mechanically flexible coating that adapts its thermal emittance to different ambient temperatures. The fabricated temperature-adaptive radiative coating (TARC) optimally absorbs the solar energy and automatically switches thermal emittance from 0.20 for ambient temperatures lower than 15°C to 0.90 for temperatures above 30°C, driven by a photonically amplified metal-insulator transition. Simulations show that this system outperforms existing roof coatings for energy saving in most climates, especially those with substantial seasonal variations.

The recent discovery of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals crystals has provoked a surge of interest in the exploration of fundamental spin interaction in reduced dimensions. However, existing material candidates have several limitations, notably lacking intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic order and air stability. Here, motivated by the anomalously high Curie temperature observed in bulk diluted magnetic oxides, we demonstrate room-temperature ferromagnetism in Co-doped graphene-like Zinc Oxide, a chemically stable layered material in air, down to single atom thickness. Through the magneto-optic Kerr effect, superconducting quantum interference device and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we observe clear evidences of spontaneous magnetization in such exotic material systems at room temperature and above. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy results explicitly exclude the existence of metallic Co or cobalt oxides clusters. X-ray characterizations reveal that the substitutional Co atoms form Co2+ states in the graphitic lattice of ZnO. By varying the Co doping level, we observe transitions between paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and less ordered phases due to the interplay between impurity-band-exchange and super-exchange interactions. Our discovery opens another path to 2D ferromagnetism at room temperature with the advantage of exceptional tunability and robustness.

The new physics of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) motivated extensive studies of flat bands hosted by moiré superlattices in van der Waals structures, inspiring the investigations into their photonic counterparts with potential applications including Bose-Einstein condensation. However, correlation between photonic flat bands and bilayer photonic moiré systems remains unexplored, impeding further development of moiré photonics. In this work, we formulate a coupled-mode theory for low-angle twisted bilayer honeycomb photonic crystals as a close analogy of TBG, discovering magic-angle photonic flat bands with a non-Anderson-type localization. Moreover, the interlayer separation constitutes a convenient degree of freedom in tuning photonic moiré bands without high pressure. A phase diagram is constructed to correlate the twist angle and separation dependencies to the photonic magic angles. Our findings reveal a salient correspondence between fermionic and bosonic moiré systems and pave the avenue toward novel applications through advanced photonic band or state engineering.

Background: Diabetic striatopathy (DS) is a rare disorder characterized by clinical manifestations of hemichorea, non-ketotic hyperglycemia, and high signal on T1-weighted MRI or high density on CT scan in basal ganglia, typically associated with poor glycemic control. Objective: This study aimed to analyze clinical characteristics of patients with diabetic striatopathy to raise awareness amongst physicians, especially endocrinologists, about this rare neurological manifestation in patients with diabetes. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data on clinical presentations, laboratory workups, and cranial CT and MRI of six patients with DS who were admitted to our hospital from October 2013 to June 2022. Results: The mean age of onset among the six patients was 80.5 years, and the mean value of HbA1c was 13.65%. All six patients complained of involuntary movements, which primarily affected the arm and leg on one side of the body. Bilateral caudate nucleus hyperdensities were shown on the CT examination in Case 3,while the other 5 patients, unilateral caudate nucleus hyperdensity was shown. In addition, five patients (except Case 5) underwent MRI, all showing hypersignal lesions on the T1-weighted images. A low signal in the right basal ganglia was shown on MRI susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) sequences in Case 6. All six patients exhibited carotid artery or cerebral artery stenosis. Following strict blood glucose control and symptomatic management, the symptoms of chorea improved significantly in all patients, and repeat images indicated that the lesions gradually disappeared. Conclusion: Both poor vascular conditions and severe hyperglycemia contribute to the development of diabetic striatopathy. The prognosis is usually good by active treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of sustainable pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) from natural biomass resources has attracted increasing attention owing to their non-toxic, biocompatible, and biodegradable features. In this study, a bio-based acrylic PSA with tunable adhesion and cohesion was synthesized by a selective chemical modification of isosorbide-5-acrylate (IA) and its copolymerization with butyl acrylate and acrylic acid through UV-curing crosslinking. During the UV-curing process, the synthesized isosorbide diacrylate ester (IDAE) served as the crosslinker, effectively improving the crosslinking degree of PSA. The impact of IA and IDAE on the mechanical properties of PSA was studied. Moreover, to achieve a balance between adhesion and cohesion, the optimal composition was identified. The addition of IA significantly enhances the stiffness of PSA. Furthermore, the combined effect of IA and IDAE improves the overall adhesion properties of the PSA. The optimal bio-based PSA demonstrates a peel force of 13.9 N/25 mm and a persistent time of 6820 min, promising to replace traditional petroleum-based PSAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bond performance served as a crucial foundation for the collaboration between concrete and steel rebar. This study investigated the bond performance between coal gasification slag (CGS) concrete, an environmentally friendly construction material, and steel rebar. The effects of fine aggregate type, steel rebar diameter, and anchorage length on bond performance were examined through bond-slip tests conducted on 16 groups of reinforced concrete specimens with different parameters. By utilizing experimental data, a formula for the bond strength between steel rebar and CGS concrete was derived. Additionally, the BPE bond-slip constitutive model was modified by introducing a correction factor (k) to account for relative protective layer thickness. Findings indicated that substituting 25% of manufactured sand with coal gasification slag did not cause significant adverse effects on concrete strength or bond stress between concrete and steel rebar. The effect of steel rebar diameter on the ultimate bond stress was not obvious, whereas when the steel rebar diameter was fixed; the increase in anchorage length led to uneven distribution of bond stress and eventually reduced the ultimate bond stress. The modified bond-slip constitutive model agreed well with the experimental values and was able to more accurately reflect the bond-slip performance between CGS concrete and steel rebar.
