Two experiments were conducted to investigate the differences in perceptual representations among multilingual individuals. In Experiment 1, the immediate sentence-picture verification paradigm was used to investigate perceptual representations in the working memory stage. The results suggest a match effect within the first language (Cantonese), but not within the second language (Mandarin) or the third language (English), showing perceptual representations only in first language comprehension. In Experiment 2, the delayed sentence-picture verification paradigm was used to investigate perceptual representations in long-term memory. Similarly, the results suggest a match effect within the first language (Mandarin), but not within the second language (English). The findings of both experiments suggest that the first language was perceptually represented, regardless of whether it was Cantonese or Mandarin, regardless of the processing in working memory or long-term memory. No evidence was found for perceptual representations in the later-learned languages, regardless of high or low proficiency. Our study has implications for theories of language comprehension and embodied cognition.

Comprehensive Summary: Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)‐mediated polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) of star block copolymer and linear block copolymer using a binary mixture of a star‐like macro‐RAFT agent and a linear macro‐RAFT agent is reported. With this formulation, star block copolymer and diblock copolymer were formed simultaneously to generate colloidally stable star/linear block copolymer assemblies. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) analysis confirmed the presence of two types of polymers in the final samples. The molar ratio of the star‐like macro‐RAFT agent and the linear macro‐RAFT agent has a significant impact on the morphology of polymer assemblies. It was found that increasing the amount of star‐like macro‐RAFT agent facilitated the formation of higher‐order morphologies. Additionally, effects of other reaction parameters including the length/number of the arm of the star‐like macro‐RAFT agent, degree of polymer (DP), monomer concentration on the morphology of star/linear block copolymer assemblies were also investigated. In the current study of applied cognitive linguistics (CL), schematic diagrams that represent generalizations of physical-spatial experience were applied in a computer-based tutor that trained English prepositions for second language (L2) learners. Behavioral and electrophysiological (ERP) measures were used to examine whether schematic-diagram feedback provided by the tutor had an instructional advantage over the minimally informed correctness feedback. Behavioral results confirmed this prediction and further revealed that the treatment difference was more striking when the participants had a lower L2 proficiency. The ERP results also supported the prediction. Violation uses of prepositions yielded an N270 and an N400. Schematic-diagram feedback motivated significant changes in brain potentials, whereas correctness feedback failed to do so. Overall, our findings suggest that CL-inspired instruction of a relatively short duration led to significant improvements in learners' behavioral productive performance and in their sensitivity to semantic violation of preposition use during online sentence processing. The study provided strong neurolinguistic evidence for CL-inspired pedagogy in supporting L2 learning.

We used delayed sentence-picture verification tasks to investigate multilingual perceptual representations. In experiment 1, participants listened to sentences with implied shapes. After a 10-min interval, they judged whether pictures had been mentioned in the preceding sentences or not. Results in experiment 1 showed significant match effect in L1, but not in high proficient L2 or low proficient L3. In experiment 2, Participants listened to one language block, then immediately judged one picture block, totally three language-picture blocks. Results in experiment 2 were parallel to results in experiment 1. Our study supports the view of distributed conception: L2 and L3 are associated with less perceptual symbols than L1, indicating great impact of acquisition styles on perceptual representations. Our results show little impact of language proficiency levels on perceptual representations in delayed tasks.

The estimation of duration has been shown to follow Bayesianinference, where people use their prior belief to calibrate theestimation. This explains timing biases such as the range biaswhere a duration is reproduced as longer when previouslyencountered durations were longer than shorter. However, it isunclear whether prior belief is based on previously perceivedor reproduced durations. In 4 experiments, we show that therange bias occurs between short and long reproduction rangesbut not between short and long perception ranges. Furtheranalyses also show that the prior is updated by the most recentreproduced (but not perceived) duration. Together these resultssupport a task-oriented Bayesian inference account of timereproduction, where people use the perceived duration andtheir past reproduction experience to make an inference abouthow much time to reproduce.

The current study investigated the mechanism of language switching in unbalanced visual unimodal bilinguals as well as balanced and unbalanced bimodal bilinguals during a picture naming task. All three groups exhibited significant switch costs across two languages, with symmetrical switch cost in balanced bimodal bilinguals and asymmetrical switch cost in unbalanced unimodal bilinguals and bimodal bilinguals. Moreover, the relative proficiency of the two languages but not their absolute proficiency had an effect on language switch cost. For the bimodal bilinguals the language switch cost also arose from modality switching. These findings suggest that the language switch cost might originate from multiple sources from both outside (e.g., modality switching) and inside (e.g., the relative proficiency of the two languages) the linguistic lexicon.
