Abstract

In this work, we propose a method for regulating topological states in acoustic systems by introducing airflow circulation. Composed of hollow rings linked with subwavelength rectangular waveguides, the proposed acoustic topological meta-crystals support multi-dimensional boundary states where the corner states merge into the edge ones. With the airflow introduced, the corner states separate from the edge states. We give the relationship between the frequency of the corner state and the speed of airflow and test the result by calculating eigenmodes of the supercell and finite lattice. Simulations for the acoustic field excited by a point source in a finite lattice also agree the relationship we give. The introduction of airflow in a topological system provides a method for manual control of the topological corner states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ice formation detection is important in telecommunications and aeronautics, e.g., ice on the wings of an aircraft affects its aerodynamic performance and leads to fatal accidents. While many types of sensors exist, resistive sensors for ice detection have been poorly explored. They are however attractive because of their simplicity and the possibility to install an array of sensors on large areas to map the ice formation on wings. Hygroscopic ionic conductors have been demonstrated for resistive ice sensing but their high resistance prevents the readout of sensor arrays. In this work, mixed ionic‐electronic polymer conductors (MIEC) are considered for the first time for ice detection. The polymer blend poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is solution deposited on a pair of electrodes. The sensor displays an abrupt rise in electrical resistance during the transition phase between water liquid to solid. It is proposed that the morphology and electronic transport in PEDOT are affected by the freezing event because the absorbed water in the PSS‐rich phase undergoes dilatation upon forming ice crystals. For the aeronautics application, successful tests of integration of sensing layer in pre‐preg layers of aeronautical grade and freezing detection are carried out to validate the ice detection principle. Abstract

Organic thermoelectric (OTE) materials promise convenient energy conversion between heat gradients and voltage with flexible and wearable power‐supplying devices at a low price. Although a variety of OTE materials are investigated, the TE performance is still far from practical application. To achieve high TE performance, a thorough understanding of the structure–property relationship in OTE materials is necessary. In this comprehensive review, the fundamentals of OTEs are summarized, the recent achievements of OTE materials are reviewed, and the relationship between structure and properties in high‐performance OTE materials is discussed. Furthermore, how the molecular backbones, side chains, energy levels, molecular packing, and heteroatom effect all play vital roles in thermoelectric properties is addressed. Abstract

Octopus suckers offer remarkable adhesion performance against nonporous surfaces and have inspired extensive research to develop artificial adhesives. However, most of existing octopus‐inspired adhesives are either passive without an actuation strategy or active but not energy efficient. Here, a novel design of a magnetically actuated, energy‐efficient smart adhesive with rapidly tunable, great switchable, and highly reversible adhesion strength inspired by the elastic energy storage mechanism in octopus suckers is reported. The smart adhesive features two cavities separated by an elastic membrane with the upper cavity filled with magnetic particles while the lower one empty. The deformation of the elastic membrane can be actively controlled by an external magnetic field to change the cavity volume, thus generating a cavity‐pressure‐induced adhesion. Systematically experimental and theoretical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of design and operation of the smart adhesive and give insights into the underlying adhesion mechanisms. Demonstrations of this smart adhesive in transfer printing and manipulation of various surfaces in both dry and wet environments illustrate the potential for deterministic assembly and industrial or robotic manipulation. Abstract

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limits the efficiency of oxygen‐associated energy conversion in fuel cells and air‐metal batteries. Today, expensive noble metal catalysts are often utilized to enhance the ORR and the resulting conversion efficiency in those devices. Hence, there is an intensive research to find efficient electrodes, exhibiting a favorable electronic structure, for ORR based on abundant materials that can be manufactured using low cost processes. In that context, metal‐free carbon‐based nanostructures and conducting polymers have been actively investigated. The negatively doped poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) as an efficient and stable oxygen cathode material is reported here. Compared to the benchmark p‐doped conducting polymer poly(3,4‐ethylendioxythiophene) (PEDOT), the BBL provides electrocatalysis that fully reduces dioxygen into water, via a (2 + 2)‐electron transfer pathway with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an intermediate; while PEDOT limits the ORR to H2O2. It is demonstrated that n‐doped BBL is a promising air electrode material for low‐cost and ecofriendly model fuel cells, without the need of any co‐catalysts, and its performance is found to be superior to p‐doped PEDOT air electrodes. 44. Bone Fracture Healing under the Intervention of a Stretchable Ultrasound Array

Abstract

Ultrasound treatment has been recognized as an effective and noninvasive approach to promote fracture healing. However, traditional rigid ultrasound probe is bulky, requiring cumbersome manual operations and inducing unfavorable side effects when functioning, which precludes the wide application of ultrasound in bone fracture healing. Here, we report a stretchable ultrasound array for bone fracture healing, which features high-performance 1–3 piezoelectric composites as transducers, stretchable multilayered serpentine metal films in a bridge-island pattern as electrical interconnects, soft elastomeric membranes as encapsulations, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with low curing agent ratio as adhesive layers. The resulting ultrasound array offers the benefits of large stretchability for easy skin integration and effective affecting region for simple skin alignment with good electromechanical performance. Experimental investigations of the stretchable ultrasound array on the delayed union model in femoral shafts of rats show that the callus growth is more active in the second week of treatment and the fracture site is completely osseous healed in the sixth week of treatment. Various bone quality indicators (e.g., bone modulus, bone mineral density, bone tissue/total tissue volume, and trabecular bone thickness) could be enhanced with the intervention of a stretchable ultrasound array. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations indicate that ultrasound promotes osteoblast differentiation, bone formation, and remodeling by promoting the expression of osteopontin (OPN) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). This work provides an effective tool for bone fracture healing in a simple and convenient manner and creates engineering opportunities for applying ultrasound in medical applications.
