1. OneLove beyond the field -- A few-shot pipeline for topic and sentiment analysis during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar

Abstract

The FIFA World Cup in Qatar was discussed extensively in the news and on social media. Due to news reports with allegations of human rights violations, there were calls to boycott it. Wearing a OneLove armband was part of a planned protest activity. Controversy around the armband arose when FIFA threatened to sanction captains who wear it. To understand what topics Twitter users Tweeted about and what the opinion of German Twitter users was towards the OneLove armband, we performed an analysis of German Tweets published during the World Cup using in-context learning with LLMs. We validated the labels on human annotations. We found that Twitter users initially discussed the armband's impact, LGBT rights, and politics; after the ban, the conversation shifted towards politics in sports in general, accompanied by a subtle shift in sentiment towards neutrality. Our evaluation serves as a framework for future research to explore the impact of sports activism and evolving public sentiment. 2. A Systematic Review of Echo Chamber Research: Comparative Analysis of Conceptualizations, Operationalizations, and Varying Outcomes

Abstract

This systematic review synthesizes current research on echo chambers and filter bubbles to highlight the reasons for the dissent in echo chamber research on the existence, antecedents, and effects of the phenomenon. The review of 112 studies reveals that the lack of consensus in echo chamber research is based on different conceptualizations and operationalizations of echo chambers. While studies that have conceptualized echo chambers with homophily and utilized data-driven computational social science (CSS) methods have confirmed the echo chamber hypothesis and polarization effects in social media, content exposure studies and surveys that have explored the full spectrum of media exposure have rejected it. Most of these studies have been conducted in the United States, and the review emphasizes the need for a more comprehensive understanding of how echo chambers work in systems with more than two parties and outside the Global North. To advance our understanding of this phenomenon, future research should prioritize conducting more cross-platform studies, considering algorithmic filtering changes through continuous auditing, and examining the causal direction of the association between polarization, fragmentation, and the establishment of online echo chambers. The review also provides the advantages and disadvantages of different operationalizations and makes recommendations for studies in the European Union (EU), which will become possible with the upcoming Digital Services Act (DSA). Overall, this systematic review contributes to the ongoing scholarly discussion on the existence, antecedents, and effects of echo chambers and filter bubbles.

Abstract

In this paper, the Schwarz type and Schwarz-Pick type inequalities for solutions of $\alpha$-harmonic equation for $\alpha>-1$ are investigated. By making use of the integral of trigonometric functions, we obtain the two types of inequalities in terms of hypergeometric functions which improve the corresponding results due to Khalfallah et al. Abstract

Volumetric subcellular imaging has long been essential for studying structures and dynamics in cells and tissues. However, due to limited imaging speed and depth of field, it has been challenging to perform live-cell imaging and single-particle tracking. Here we report a 2.5D fluorescence microscopy combined with highly inclined illumination beams, which significantly reduce not only the image acquisition time but also the out-of-focus background by ∼2-fold compared to epi-illumination. Instead of sequential z-scanning, our method projects a certain depth of volumetric information onto a 2D plane in a single shot using multi-layered glass for incoherent wavefront splitting, enabling high photon detection efficiency. We apply our method to multi-color immunofluorescence imaging and volumetric super-resolution imaging, covering ∼3–4 µm thickness of samples without z-scanning. Additionally, we demonstrate that our approach can substantially extend the observation time of single-particle tracking in living cells.

Abstract

Background Multi - modal neuroimaging examinations play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of functional neurosurgery. However, there is currently a lack of effective management for these complex data in clinical practice. This study attempts to establish a feasible multimodal neuroimaging data information management system and evaluate its application effects. Methods By standardizing clinical diagnosis and treatment processes, analyzing the nodes where imaging data were generated, and streamlining data flow routes, establishing storage naming conventions, setting up storage servers, and training specialized personnel, we designed and applied a multi - modal neuroimaging data information management system. The primary evaluation indicators were the archiving rates of 5 types of data: structural sequences, other preoperative images, postoperative electrode CT, electrode reconstruction, and postoperative CT/MRI. The secondary evaluation indicators included the total man-hours consumed for data archiving and the average man-hours consumed per case. Results Without multi-modal neuroimaging data information management (control group, n = 64), the total manpower consumption was 192 man-hours, with an average of 3 man-hours per case. With multi-modal neuroimaging data information management (data management group, n = 50), the total manpower consumption was 84 man-hours, with an average of 1.68 man-hours per case. The data management group had higher archiving rates compared to the control group: structural sequences [100% (50/50) vs. 32.81% (21/64); χ2 = 11.383, P = 0.001], other preoperative images [96% (48/50) vs. 26.56% (17/64); χ2 = 13.839, P = 0.000], postoperative electrode CT [96% (48/50) vs. 32.81% (21/64); χ2 = 10.409, P = 0.001], electrode reconstruction [96% (48/50) vs. 32.81% (21/64); χ2 = 10.409, P = 0.001], postoperative CT/MRI [96% (48/50) vs. 15.63% (10/64); χ2 = 22.169, P = 0.000]. Conclusions Designing a multi-modal neuroimaging data information management system that aligns with clinical practice and reasonably setting data collection and archiving nodes can effectively improve data archiving rates, save manpower resources, ensure the complete storage of clinical data, and ensure the smooth operation of clinical tasks, and enhance clinical diagnosis and treatment levels.

34. Peer Critique in an Online Environment: Nature of Student Critiques and Their Perceptions of the Process

Abstract

Research has shown that an effective peer critique process improves the quality of student assignments in various disciplines. Despite its benefits, peer critique is not without challenges. The major concern is the quality of the feedback. Students are not willing to take critical stances in reviewing their peers' work and they tend to give more positive comments on their peers' work. Students often complain that most feedback is not useful. Due to poor feedback, students do not feel they have learned from their experiences. This paper reports a longitudinal study investigating peer critique conducted in the online learning environment. The purpose of this study is to observe how students conduct peer critique in an online environment, where interventions are infused and applied to promote group dynamics. Student online critiques were archived. Content analysis was applied in coding student critiques. Student-written reflections were collected to obtain student perceptions about online peer critique.
