18. Artificial-intelligence-led revolution of construction materials: From molecules to Industry 4.0

Abstract

Industry 4.0 promotes the transformation of manufacturing industry to intelligence, which demands advances in materials, devices, and systems of the construction industry. Researchers of construction materials have incorporated artificial intelligence technology to accelerate these advances. From this perspective, we evaluate the latest advances in applying machine learning to the development of concrete, fiber-reinforced composites, and metals in improving their durability, sustainability, safety, and recyclability. We highlight how artificial intelligence addresses the challenges of material research, emphasizing the peculiarities of the construction industry under the Industry 4.0 framework. Based on the advances in artificial intelligence, we envision integration with Industry 4.0, starting with digitization of construction materials, progressing to advanced manufacturing, and eventually aiming to the level of intelligent application and operation of buildings. A revolutionary future can be envisaged in which design, manufacturing, and application of construction materials involve the meticulous integration of artificial intelligence, big data with all theory, experiments, and computations.

20. Degradation of epoxy/glass interface in hygrothermal environment: An atomistic investigation

Abstract

The degradation at the glass fiber/matrix interface through molecular dynamics simulations in hygrothermal environment is investigated. The glass fiber reinforced polymer composite has been modeled using a cross-linked epoxy matrix and amorphous silica substrate. The degradation mechanism in hygrothermal environment is indicated through the reduction of decreased adhesion energy and the weakened intermolecular interactions with the consideration of hydration bond. Furthermore, softened epoxy molecules in hygrothermal conditioning possess a lower density near the fiber surface, which inhabits the stress transfer between fiber and matrix, eventually leading to the deteriorated interfacial adhesion. Our simulation results echo with the experimental measurements, which can be further calibrated and utilized as inputs in micromechanical models to bridge the gap between the macroscopic and microscopic behavior of civil infrastructures.

28. Atomistic investigation of GFRP composites under chloride environment.

Abstract

Fiber reinforced polymer composites have paved the way for the evolution of the engineering materials. Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) has become one of the most promising materials among the novel composites due to its low price and high performance. Here, the GFRP composite in investigated by fill atomistic molecular dynamics, which contains the epoxy matrix and amorphous silica substrate. The degradation in chloride environment is revealed through the interfacial interactions, the structural changes of the epoxy matrix and hydrogen bonding in the composites. Compared to dry and aqueous environment, the simulation results show that chloride environment leads to the worst deterioration of interfacial adhesion, which correlates with structural and mechanical degradation of bonded interface, as indicated by the decreased epoxy density close to interface. It is indicated by examining the nano-structures of the interface during the pulling process that the chloride environment hinders the formation of intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the GFRP composites. These findings indicate the deterioration towards bond and matrix is critical in the presence of the chloride environment, which provides the fundamental insight for designing and predicting performance degradation of macroscopic GFRP composites in the marine application. Abstract

With the assistance of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma, selective catalytic reduction of NOx by ethanol over Ag/Al2O3 catalysts was studied. Experimental results show that NOx conversion was greatly enhanced due to the presence of DBD plasma at lower temperature. By varying the DBD voltages or power in 13 kHz frequency at different temperatures, NOx conversion was increased to 40.7% from 6.4% at 176 °C, even to 66.8% from 17.3% at 200 °C. NOx conversion could even be improved to 90% at temperature above 255 °C. It was proposed that nonthermal plasma generated by dielectric barrier discharge reactor was very effective for oxidizing NO to NO2 under excess O2 conditions, which possesses high reactivity with C2H5OH to yield CxHyNzO compound. Abstract

Ti–Si–N thin films with different silicon contents are deposited by a cathodic arc technique in an Ar+N2 +SiH4 mixture atmosphere. With the increase of silane Bow rate, the content of silicon in the Ti–Si–N films varies from 2.0 at. % to 12.2 at. %. Meanwhile, the cross-sectional morphology of these films changes from an apparent columnar microstructure to a dense fine-grained structure. The x-ray diffractometer (XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the Ti–Si–N film consists of TiN crystallites and SiNx amorphous phase. The corrosion resistance is improved with the increase of silane Bow rate. Growth defects in the films produced play a key role in the corrosion process, especially for the local corrosion. The porosity of the films decreases from 0.13% to 0.00032% by introducing silane at the Bow rate of 14sccm.

Abstract

The Ar/O2plasma needle in the induction of A549 cancer cells apoptosis process is studied by means of real-time observation. The entire process of programmed cell death is observed. The typical morphological changes of A549 apoptosis are detected by 4′, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining, for example, chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation. Cell viability is determined and quantified by neutral red uptake assay, and the survival rate of A549 from Ar/O2plasmas is presented. Further spectral analysis indicates the reactive species, including O and OH play crucial roles in the cell inactivation.
