We report on multiwavelength studies of a blazar NVSS J171822+423948, which is identified as the low-energy counterpart of 4FGL J1718.5+4237, the unique $\gamma$-ray source known to be cospatial with the IceCube neutrino event IC-201221A. After a 12-year long quiescent period undetected by Fermi-LAT, $\gamma$-ray activities with a tenfold flux increase emerge soon (a few tens of days) after arrival of the neutrino. Associated optical flares in the ZTF $g$, $r$, and $i$ bands are observed together with elevated WISE infrared fluxes. Synchronized variations suggest that both the $\gamma$-ray emission and the neutrino event are connected to the blazar. Furthermore, the optical spectrum reveals emission lines at a redshift $z$ = 2.68 $\pm$ 0.01. Thus, it is the first candidate for a neutrino-emitting blazar at the redshift above 2. The range of the U bosonic coupling constants in neutron star matter is a very interesting but still unsolved problem which has multifaceted influences in nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The combination of the theoretical numerical simulation and the recent observations provides a very good opportunity to solve this problem. In the present work, the range of the U bosonic coupling constants is inferred based on the three relations of the mass-radius, mass-frequency and mass-tidal deformability in neutron star containing hyperons using the GM1, TM1 and NL3 parameter sets under the two flavor symmetries of the SU(6) and SU(3) in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory. Combined with observations from PSRs J1614-2230, J0348+0432, J2215-5135, J0952-0607, J0740+6620, J0030-0451, J1748-2446ad, XTE J1739-285, GW170817 and GW190814 events, our numerical results show that the U bosonic coupling constants may tend to be within the range from 0 to 20 GeV$^{-2}$ in neutron star containing hyperons. Moreover, the numerical results of the three relations obtained by the SU(3) symmetry are better in accordance with observation data than those obtained by the SU(6) symmetry. We report on an identification of a new gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (gamma-NLS1), SDSS J095909.51+460014.3 (z = 0.399), by establishing an association with a gamma-ray source 4FGL 0959.6+4606, although its low-energy counterpart was suggested to be a radio galaxy 2MASX J09591976+4603515. WISE long-term light curves of these two sources reveal diverse infrared variability patterns. Brightenings of 2.5 mag are detected for the former source, while flux decays of 0.5 mag are found for the other one. More importantly, the time that the infrared flux of the NLS1 rises, is coincident with the time of flux increase of 4FGL 0959.6+4606. At the same time, no infrared activity of the radio galaxy has been observed. A specific analysis of 15-month Fermi-LAT data, aiming at the high gamma-ray flux state, yields a significant source (TS =43). The corresponding gamma-ray localization analysis suggests that only the NLS1 falls into the uncertainty area, further supporting the updated association relationship. A broadband spectral energy distribution of SDSS J095909.51+460014.3 has been drawn and well described by the classic single-zone homogeneous leptonic jet model. A radio-emitting tidal disruption event (AT2019dsg) is proposed as a likely counterpart of the IceCube neutrino event IC-191001A. In this work we have revisited the {\it Fermi}-LAT data in the direction of the neutrino and confirmed no signal at the site of AT2019dsg. Instead, at the edge of the 90\% confidential level error region of this neutrino there is a $\gamma$-ray transient source associated with a blazar GB6 J2113+1121. In May 2019, GB6 J2113+1121 was undergoing an unprecedented $\gamma$-ray flare since the start of the {\it Fermi}-LAT operation, with a variability amplitude about 20-fold. Similar violent flares of GB6 J2113+1121, unobserved before, have been also detected observed in optical bands. Moreover, the blazar remained in a high flux state in the infrared bands when IceCube-191001A arrived, though its $\gamma$-ray and optical activities has temporally ceased. Motivated by the spatial and temporal coincidence, we suggest that GB6 J2113+1121 is a candidate of the counterpart of IC-191001A. The jet properties of GB6 J2113+1121 are investigated, which are found to be comparable with that of the neutrino-emitting blazars (candidates). A specific analysis of archival IceCube data in this direction and future observations would put a further constraint on the origin of the neutrino., Comment: ApJL in press

Nonlinear mechanics of solids is an exciting field that encompasses both beautiful mathematics, such as the emergence of instabilities and the formation of complex patterns, as well as multiple applications. Two-dimensional crystals and van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures allow revisiting this field on the atomic level, allowing much finer control over the parameters and offering atomistic interpretation of experimental observations. In this work, we consider the formation of instabilities consisting of radially-oriented wrinkles around mono- and few-layer "bubbles" in two-dimensional vdW heterostructures. Interestingly, the shape and wavelength of the wrinkles depend not only on the thickness of the two-dimensional crystal forming the bubble, but also on the atomistic structure of the interface between the bubble and the substrate, which can be controlled by their relative orientation. We argue that the periodic nature of these patterns emanates from an energetic balance between the resistance of the top membrane to bending, which favors large wavelength of wrinkles, and the membrane-substrate vdW attraction, which favors small wrinkle amplitude. Employing the classical "Winkler foundation" model of elasticity theory, we show that the number of radial wrinkles conveys a valuable relationship between the bending rigidity of the top membrane and the strength of the vdW interaction. Armed with this relationship, we use our data to demonstrate a nontrivial dependence of the bending rigidity on the number of layers in the top membrane, which shows two different regimes driven by slippage between the layers, and a high sensitivity of the vdW force to the alignment between the substrate and the membrane.

The convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns of twisted bilayer samples exhibit interference patterns in their CBED spots. Such interference patterns can be treated as off-axis holograms and the phase of the scattered waves, meaning the interlayer distance can be reconstructed. A detailed protocol of the reconstruction procedure is provided in this study. In addition, we derive an exact formula for reconstructing the interlayer distance from the recovered phase distribution, which takes into account the different chemical compositions of the individual monolayers. It is shown that one interference fringe in a CBED spot is sufficient to reconstruct the distance between the layers, which can be practical for imaging samples with a relatively small twist angle or when probing small sample regions. The quality of the reconstructed interlayer distance is studied as a function of the twist angle. At smaller twist angles, the reconstructed interlayer distance distribution is more precise and artefact free. At larger twist angles, artefacts due to the moir\'e structure appear in the reconstruction. A method for the reconstruction of the average interlayer distance is presented. As for resolution, the interlayer distance can be reconstructed by the holographic approach at an accuracy of 0.5 A, which is a few hundred times better than the intrinsic z-resolution of diffraction limited resolution, as expressed through the spread of the measured k-values. Moreover, we show that holographic CBED imaging can detect variations as small as 0.1 A in the interlayer distance, though the quantitative reconstruction of such variations suffers from large errors.

Convergent beam electron diffraction is routinely applied for studying deformation and local strain in thick crystals by matching the crystal structure to the observed intensity distributions. Recently, it has been demonstrated that CBED can be applied for imaging two-dimensional (2D) crystals where a direct reconstruction is possible and three-dimensional crystal deformations at a nanometre resolution can be retrieved. Here, we demonstrate that second-order effects allow for further information to be obtained regarding stacking arrangements between the crystals. Such effects are especially pronounced in samples consisting of multiple layers of 2D crystals. We show, using simulations and experiments, that twisted multilayer samples exhibit extra modulations of interference fringes in CBED patterns, i. e., a CBED moir\'e. A simple and robust method for the evaluation of the composition and the number of layers from a single-shot CBED pattern is demonstrated.

When two-dimensional atomic crystals are brought into close proximity to form a van der Waals heterostructure, neighbouring crystals can start influencing each others electronic properties. Of particular interest is the situation when the periodicity of the two crystals closely match and a moir\'e pattern forms, which results in specific electron scattering, reconstruction of electronic and excitonic spectra, crystal reconstruction, and many other effects. Thus, formation of moir\'e patterns is a viable tool of controlling the electronic properties of 2D materials. At the same time, the difference in the interatomic distances for the two crystals combined, determines the range in which the electronic spectrum is reconstructed, and thus is a barrier to the low energy regime. Here we present a way which allows spectrum reconstruction at all energies. By using graphene which is aligned simultaneously to two hexagonal boron nitride layers, one can make electrons scatter in the differential moir\'e pattern, which can have arbitrarily small wavevector and, thus results in spectrum reconstruction at arbitrarily low energies. We demonstrate that the strength of such a potential relies crucially on the atomic reconstruction of graphene within the differential moir\'e super-cell. We report on OVRO, WISE, Swift and Fermi-LAT observations of the high redshift blazar CGRaBS J0733+0456, from which significant flux variations in radio, infrared (IR) as well as $\gamma$-ray domains are detected. Particularly, the amplitude of long-term IR variation is over one order of magnitude and the IR variability timescale can be constrained as short as a few hours in the source frame. The IR and $\gamma$-ray light curves are found to be rather similar, and the strong quasi-simultaneous infrared and $\gamma$-ray flares are proved to be unique among the nearby $\gamma$-ray sources. This is the first time to identify a $\gamma-$ray blazar at redshift $z\geq 3$ with multi-wavelength flux variations (flares). Broadband spectral energy distributions in different flux states are constructed and theoretically described. The $\gamma-$ray flares from some blazars as distant as redshift $\sim$ 5 are expected to be detectable for Fermi-LAT., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures and 1 table, ApJL in press

Van der Waals heterostructures have been lately intensively studied because they offer a large variety of properties that can be controlled by selecting 2D materials and their sequence in the stack. The exact arrangement of the layers as well as the exact arrangement of the atoms within the layers, both are important for the properties of the resulting device. Recently it has been demonstrated that convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) allows quantitative three-dimensional mapping of atomic positions in three-dimensional materials from a single CBED pattern. In this study we investigate CBED in more detail by simulating and performing various CBED regimes, with convergent and divergent wavefronts, on a somewhat simplified system: a 2D monolayer crystal. In CBED, each CBED spot is in fact an in-line hologram of the sample, where in-line holography is known to exhibit high intensity contrast in detection of weak phase objects that are not detectable in conventional in-focus imaging mode. Adsorbates exhibit strong intensity contrast in zero and higher order CBED spots, whereas lattice deformation such as strain or rippling cause noticeable intensity contrast only in the first and higher order CBED spots. The individual CBED spots can be reconstructed as typical in-line holograms, and the resolution of 2.13 A can be in principle achieved in the reconstructions. We provide simulated and experimental examples of CBED of a 2D monolayer crystal. The simulations show that individual CBED spots can be treated as in-line holograms and sample distributions such as adsorbates, can be reconstructed. Individual atoms can be reconstructed from a single CBED pattern provided the later exhibits high-order CBED spots. Examples of reconstructions obtained from experimental CBED patterns, at a resolution of 2.7 A, are shown.

Van der Waals heterostructures, which explore the synergetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials when assembled into three-dimensional stacks, have already brought to life a number of exciting new phenomena and novel electronic devices. Still, the interaction between the layers in such assembly, possible surface reconstruction, intrinsic and extrinsic defects are very difficult to characterise by any method, because of the single-atomic nature of the crystals involved. Here we present a convergent beam electron holographic technique which allows imaging of the stacking order in such heterostructures. Based on the interference of electron waves scattered on different crystals in the stack, this approach allows one to reconstruct the relative rotation, stretching, out-of-plane corrugation of the layers with atomic precision. Being holographic in nature, our approach allows extraction of quantitative information about the three-dimensional structure of the typical defects from a single image covering thousands of square nanometres. Furthermore, qualitative information about the defects in the stack can be extracted from the convergent diffraction patterns even without reconstruction - simply by comparing the patterns in different diffraction spots. We expect that convergent beam electron holography will be widely used to study the properties of van der Waals heterostructures.

The formation and dynamical history of hot Jupiters is currently debated, with wide stellar binaries having been suggested as a potential formation pathway. Additionally, contaminating light from both binary companions and unassociated stars can significantly bias the results of planet characterisation studies, but can be corrected for if the properties of the contaminating star are known. We search for binary companions to known transiting exoplanet host stars, in order to determine the multiplicity properties of hot Jupiter host stars. We also characterise unassociated stars along the line of sight, allowing photometric and spectroscopic observations of the planetary system to be corrected for contaminating light. We analyse lucky imaging observations of 97 Southern hemisphere exoplanet host stars, using the Two Colour Instrument on the Danish 1.54m telescope. For each detected companion star, we determine flux ratios relative to the planet host star in two passbands, and measure the relative position of the companion. The probability of each companion being physically associated was determined using our two-colour photometry. A catalogue of close companion stars is presented, including flux ratios, position measurements, and estimated companion star temperature. For companions that are potential binary companions, we review archival and catalogue data for further evidence. For WASP-77AB and WASP-85AB, we combine our data with historical measurements to determine the binary orbits, showing them to be moderately eccentric and inclined to the line of sight and planetary orbital axis. Combining our survey with the similar Friends of Hot Jupiters survey, we conclude that known hot Jupiter host stars show a deficit of high mass stellar companions compared to the field star population; however, this may be a result of the biases in detection and target selection by ground-based surveys., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, 12 tables.
