Synaptic communication requires the expression of functional postsynaptic receptors that match the presynaptically released neurotransmitter. The ability of neurons to switch the transmitter they release is increasingly well documented, and these switches require changes in the postsynaptic receptor population. Although the activity-dependent molecular mechanism of neurotransmitter switching is increasingly well understood, the basis of specification of postsynaptic neurotransmitter receptors matching the newly expressed transmitter is unknown. Using a functional assay, we show that sustained application of glutamate to embryonic vertebrate skeletal muscle cells cultured before innervation is necessary and sufficient to up-regulate ionotropic glutamate receptors from a pool of different receptors expressed at low levels. Up-regulation of these ionotropic receptors is independent of signaling by metabotropic glutamate receptors. Both imaging of glutamate-induced calcium elevations and Western blots reveal ionotropic glutamate receptor expression prior to immunocytochemical detection. Sustained application of glutamate to skeletal myotomes in vivo is necessary and sufficient for up-regulation of membrane expression of the GluN1 NMDA receptor subunit. Pharmacological antagonists and morpholinos implicate p38 and Jun kinases and MEF2C in the signal cascade leading to ionotropic glutamate receptor expression. The results suggest a mechanism by which neuronal release of transmitter up-regulates postsynaptic expression of appropriate transmitter receptors following neurotransmitter switching and may contribute to the proper expression of receptors at the time of initial innervation.

The modulation of a terahertz (THz) wave on amplitude, phase and polarization is important for the application of THz technology, especially in the field of imaging, and is one of the current research hotspots. Silicon-based, optically excited THz modulator is a wavefront modulation technique with a simple, compact and reconfigurable optical path. It can realize the dynamic modulation of THz wavefronts by only changing the projected two-dimensional pattern, but it still suffers from the problems of lower modulation efficiency and slower modulation rates. In this article, the Drude model in combination with the multiple thin layers structure model and Fresnel matrix method is used to compare the modulation efficiencies of three modulation modes and more factors. The method is more accurate than the popular proposed method, especially when the thickness of the excited photoconductive layers reaches a few hundred microns. In comparing the three modes, namely transmission, ordinary reflection and total internal reflection, it is found the total internal reflection modulation mode has the best modulation efficiency. Further, under this mode, the effects of three factors, including the lifetime of photo-excited carriers, the wavelength of pump light and the frequency of THz wave, on the performance of THz modulator are analyzed. The simulation results show that the realization of total internal reflection using silicon prisms is a simple and effective method to improve the modulation efficiency of a silicon-based optically excited THz modulator, which provides references for the design of a photo-induced THz modulator. Owing to the non-uniform distribution of chemical composition and temperature during the heat treatment process, the residual stress and deformation of the workpiece emerge as crucial factors requiring consideration in managing the service performance and lifespan of shield machine cutter rings crafted from H13 steel. Considering H13 steel with titanium microalloying as the research object for the shield machine cutter ring, we simulate the quenching process using Deform-3D. The temperature field, phase transformation, stress evolution, and deformation amount after quenching are analyzed. The results demonstrate a strong agreement between the simulation and experimental results, offering valuable insights for optimizing the heat treatment process and enhancing the overall performance of shield machine cutter rings. Storage capacity, average open circuit voltage (OCV), diffusion barrier, lattice parameter changes, etc. are key indicators of whether a material would be suitable for use as a Li-ion or non-Li-ion battery (LIB or NLIB) anode. The rapid development of 2D materials over the past few decades has opened up new possibilities for these metrics. Using first-principles calculations, we prove that two 2D materials, TiB4 and SrB8, show excellent performance in terms of the above metrics when used as anodes for LIBs or NLIBs. As detailed, TiB4 has an Li\Na\K\Ca storage capacity of 588 mA h g−1, 588 mA h g−1, 588 mA h g−1, and 1176 mA h g−1, respectively, and SrB8 has an Li\Na\K\Ca storage capacity of 308 mA h g−1, 308 mA h g−1, 462 mA h g−1, and 616 mA h g−1, respectively, and they show good electrical conductivity whether existing Li, Na, K or Ca is adsorbed or not. The diffusion barriers on both surfaces are low, indicating good rate performance. The average OCV is also very low. In particular, the lattice parameters of the two materials change very little during the embedding of Li\Na\K\Ca. For Ti9B36 the corresponding values are about 0.37% (Li), 0.33% (Na), 0.64% (K) and 0.03% (Ca), and for Sr8B64 the corresponding values are about 0.70% (Li), 0.16% (Na), 0.13% (K) and 0.004% (Ca), which imply zero strain-like character and great cycling performance. All the above results show that TiB4 and SrB8 monolayers are very promising Li\Na\K\Ca ion battery anodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is an intrinsic personality trait whose genetic and neural bases have recently been studied. The current study used a neural mediation model to explore whether resting-state brain functions mediated the effects of dopamine-related genes on SPS. 298 healthy Chinese college students (96 males, mean age = 20.42 years, SD = 0.89) were scanned with magnetic resonance imaging during resting state, genotyped for 98 loci within the dopamine system, and administered the Highly Sensitive Person Scale. We extracted a "gene score" that summarized the genetic variations representing the 10 loci that were significantly linked to SPS, and then used path analysis to search for brain regions whose resting-state data would help explain the gene-behavior association. Mediation analysis revealed that temporal homogeneity of regional spontaneous activity (ReHo) in the precuneus actually suppressed the effect of dopamine-related genes on SPS. The path model explained 16% of the variance of SPS. This study represents the first attempt at using a multi-gene voxel-based neural mediation model to explore the complex relations among genes, brain, and personality.

A high‐accuracy and wide‐range optical delay measurement method based on linear frequency modulation (LFM) of a microwave source is proposed, which can measure the delay of each channel in a parallel multichannel interference structure. The light wave emitted by the light source is injected into the dual‐parallel Mach‒Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) as a carrier wave. The LFM microwave signal is loaded into the radio frequency ports of the DPMZM through a 90° hybrid couple, and the bias voltages of the DPMZM are adjusted to make it work in carrier suppression single sideband (CS‐SSB) modulation mode. The CS‐SSB optical signal output by the modulator enters the test links, including a Mach‒Zehnder interference loop composed of the reference arm and the device under test arm. Then, the output optical signal of the interference loop is input into a photodetector, and the intermediate frequency (IF) signals are obtained by the beat frequency. The frequency of the IF signal is obtained through data acquisition and fast Fourier transform calculation. Thus, the delay time is calculated. By increasing or decreasing the LFM signal scanning time, the delay measurement range can be extended, or the measurement accuracy over a short distance can be improved. The genetic and neural basis of working memory (WM) has been extensively studied. Many dopamine (DA) related genes, including the NTSR1 gene (a DA modulator gene), have been reported to be associated with WM performance. The NTSR1 protein is predominantly expressed in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus, the latter of which is closely involved in WM processing based on both lesion and fMRI studies. Thus far, however, no study has examined the joint effects of NTSR1 gene polymorphism and hippocampal morphology on WM performance. Participants of the current study were 330 healthy Chinese college students. WM performance was measured with a 2-back WM paradigm. Structural MRI data were acquired and then analyzed using an automated procedure with atlas-based FreeSurfer segmentation software (v 4.5.0) package. Linear regression analyses were conducted with a NTSR1 C/T polymorphism which was previously reported to be associated with WM (rs4334545), hippocampal volume, and their interaction as predictors of WM performance, with gender and intracranial volume (ICV) as covariates.
