The downslope plumes of dense shelf water (DSW) are critical for the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), and thus to the exchange of heat and carbon between surface and abyssal ocean. Previous studies have shown that tides and overflow-forced topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) may have strong impact on the downslope transport of DSW, but it remains unclear how the combined action of these two processes influence the descent processes of DSW, and of the resulting AABW properties. Here, with a synthesis of historical in situ observations and a set of numerical model experiments, we show that tides and TRWs play comparable roles in AABW formation: they both act to accelerate DSW descent to the abyss, leading to the formation of colder and denser AABW. Yet, tides have little impact on AABW formation unless the continental slope is steep enough to suppress TRW generation. We further characterize the dynamical regimes of dense overflows around the entire Antarctic continent based on the relative importance of TRWs versus tides. These findings highlight the pervasive role of high-frequency processes, which are not well represented in the present climate models, in the formation of AABW, and thus in the global overturning circulation.

Considering the inadequacy of current testing methods in satisfying the testing requirements of filter elements for lubricating oil separation in gas storage, this research aims to establish corresponding testing methods and device in the laboratory. The operational parameters in the laboratory encompass the operational temperature and the range of gas volume processed by the filter element on site.The testing device was utilized to investigate the influence of different testing methods and experimental liquids on the test results of the filter element performance, and was further used to analyze the evaluation method of the filter element performance under high-pressure conditions. The findings indicate that(1) the concentration and particle size distribution of liquid drops in the upstream gas of the field oil fail to satisfy the current required standards that makes the counting method applicable, therefore the counting method is not appropriate for evaluating the filtering performance of the filter element for lubricating oil separation in gas storage;(2) the filtering efficiency of the filter element obtained in laboratory is found to be compatible with the results obtained during field use, so the established testing method guarantees the effectiveness of the filter element for lubricating oil separation in evaluating the filtering performance;(3) the drainage metering method should be used as a current approach for evaluating the performance of high-pressure field oil filter element.

Over the modern satellite era, substantial climatic changes have been observed in the Antarctic, including atmospheric and oceanic warming, ice sheet thinning and a general Antarctic-wide expansion of sea ice, followed by a more recent rapid loss. Although these changes, featuring strong zonal asymmetry, are partially influenced by increasing greenhouse gas emissions and stratospheric ozone depletion, tropical–polar teleconnections are believed to have a role through Rossby wave dynamics. In this Review, we synthesize understanding of tropical teleconnections to the Southern Hemisphere extratropics arising from the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, focusing on the mechanisms and long-term climatic impacts. These teleconnections have contributed to observed Antarctic and Southern Ocean changes, including regional rapid surface warming, pre-2015 sea ice expansion and its sudden reduction thereafter, changes in ocean heat content and accelerated thinning of most of the Antarctic ice sheet. However, due to limited observations and inherent model biases, uncertainties remain in understanding and assessing the importance of these teleconnections versus those arising from greenhouse gases, ozone recovery and internal variability. Sustained pan-Antarctic efforts towards long-term observations, and more realistic dynamics and parameterizations in high-resolution climate models, offer opportunities to reduce these uncertainties.

Polyanionic structures, (MO4)n−, can be beneficial to the transport of lithium ions by virtue of the open three-dimensional frame structure. However, an unstable interface suppresses the life of the (MO4)n−-based anode. In this study, MnWO4@C nanorods with dense nanocavities have been synthesized through a hydrothermal route, followed by a chemical deposition method. As a result, the MnWO4@C anode exhibits better cycle and rate performance than MnWO4 as a Li-ion battery; the capacity is maintained at 718 mAh g−1 at 1000 mA g−1 after 400 cycles because the transport of lithium ions and the contribution of pseudo-capacitance are increased. Generally, benefiting from the carbon shell and electrolyte additive (e.g., FEC), the cycle performance of the MnWO4@C electrode is also effectively improved for lithium storage.
