Search

We report our identification of three gigaelectronvolt $\gamma$-ray sources, 4FGL J0502.6+0036, 4FGL J1055.9+6507, and 4FGL J1708.2+5519, as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). They are listed in the latest Fermi-LAT source catalog as unidentified ones. We find that the sources all showed $\gamma$-ray flux variations in recent years. Using different survey catalogs, we are able to find a radio source within the error circle of each source's position. Further analysis of optical sources in the fields allows us to determine the optical counterparts, which showed similar variation patterns to those seen in $\gamma$-rays. The optical counterparts have reported redshifts of 0.6, 1.5, and 2.3, respectively, estimated from photometric measurements. In addition, we also obtain an X-ray spectrum of 4FGL J0502.6+0036 and a flux upper limit on the X-ray emission of 4FGL J1055.9+6507 by analyzing the archival data. The broadband spectral energy distributions of the three sources from radio to $\gamma$-rays are constructed. Comparing mainly the $\gamma$-ray properties of the three sources with those of different sub-classes of AGNs, we tentatively identify them as blazars. We analyze more than 15 years of the \gr\ data, obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi)}, for the region of the young supernova remnant (SNR) RCW~103, since the nearby source 4FGL J1616.2$-$5054e, counterpart to HESS~J1616$-$518 and $\simeq$13\,arcmin away from the SNR, is determined to be extended in the more recent Fermi-LAT source catalog. Different templates for 4FGL J1616.2$-$5054e and RCW~103 are tested, and we find that a point source with a power-law (PL) spectrum at the southern limb of the SNR best describes the detected gamma-ray emission. The photon index of the PL emission is $\Gamma\simeq 2.31$(or $\alpha\simeq 2.4$ in a Log-Parabola model) , softer than the previously reported $\Gamma\simeq 2.0$ when the counterpart to HESS~J1616$-$518 was considered to be a point source (which likely caused mis-identification of extended emission at RCW~103). In order to produce the \gr\ emission in a hadronic scenario, we estimate that protons with an index$\sim$2.4 PL energy distribution are needed. These results fit with those from multi-wavelength observations that have indicated the remnant at the southern limb is interacting with a molecular cloud., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the finding of four changing-look (CL) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We selected these sources due to their potential as interesting targets when considering their relatively-large optical flux variations and related mid-infrared flux variations. To identify their CL feature, we use archival spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) taken at least 8 years ago as well as spectra taken recently from the Transient Name Server (TNS) and with the 2.4-m LiJiang telescope (LJT). We study the sources' spectral changes by fitting and determining the H$_\alpha$ and H$_\beta$ components and verify their CL behavior. When comparing the TNS and/or LJT spectra to the SDSS ones, all four sources showed the appearance of a broad or a stronger broad H$_\alpha$ component and a relatively weak broad H$_\beta$ component. As two of the four sources are established to have a brighter-and-bluer feature in the photometric data, during the time periods in which the TNS and LJT spectra were taken, this feature likely accompanied the turn-on of the broad components. Thus, we suggest that this brighter-and-bluer feature can be used as a criterion for efficiently finding CL sources among previously spectroscopically classified type 2 AGN, such as from among the sources provided by the SDSS., Comment: 14 pages, 13 Figures, 3 Tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Polarimetric features during the prompt phase of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) have been essential for elucidating the debated emission mechanisms and gaining insight into the inner structure of GRBs. However, the potential impact of photon-Axion-Like-Particle (ALP) mixing in extragalactic magnetic fields, leading to significant modifications to the initial polarization state, has been overlooked in discussions concerning prompt phase constraints. In this work, we first examine the statistical characteristics of linear polarization degree ($\Pi_{L}$) in GRBs, by utilizing data from polarimetric missions focusing on sub-MeV emissions. Our analysis, conducted with a restricted sample of GRBs spanning various redshifts, reveals a diverse distribution of $\Pi_{L}$, which currently shows no correlation with the GRBs' spectral parameters or properties of candidate host galaxies. We then explore alternations to the initial $\Pi_{L}$ due to photon-ALP mixing within a domain-like structure of the intergalactic magnetic field (${\bf B}_{\rm IGM} $). With the existence of ALPs with $m_{a}$$~$$\lesssim$$~$$10^{-14}$$~$eV and $g_{a\gamma}~$$\simeq$$~0.5\times10^{-11}$, the mixing leads to a decrease in the polarization degree of initially fully linearly polarized photons, while it induces a certain degree of polarization to initially unpolarized photons. To ensure that the effect of mixing is small enough to be negligible, the mixing term $\Delta_{a\gamma} \equiv 1/2\ g_{a\gamma} {\bf B}_{\rm IGM}$ should be less than $1.5\times 10^{-4}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Currently, the number of GRBs with both sub-MeV polarization measurement and redshift confirmation remains very limited. Certification of redshift for GRBs with low $\Pi_{L}$ would further constrain the parameter space of ALPs or provide an independent means to determine the upper limit on ${\bf B}_{\rm IGM}$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

We search for possible pulsar TeV halos among the very-high-energy (VHE) sources reported in different VHE surveys, among which in particular we use the results from the first Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) catalog of $\gamma$-ray sources. Six candidates are found. They share similar properties of containing a middle-aged, gamma-ray--bright pulsar in their positional error circles (the respective pulsars are J0248+6021, J0359+5414, J0622+3749, J0633+0632, J2006+3102, and J2238+5903), being in a rather clean field without any common Galactic VHE-emitting supernova remnants or (bright) pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), and showing an absence of any gamma-ray emissions in 0.1--500\,GeV after removing the pulsars' emissions. Combining these candidates with several reported (candidate) TeV halos, we obtain the relationships between their luminosity at 50\,TeV ($L_{\rm 50TeV}$) and the corresponding pulsars' spin-down energy ($\dot{E}$), which are $L_{\rm 50TeV}\sim \dot{E}^{0.9}$ and $L_{\rm 50TeV}/\dot{E}\sim 6.4\times 10^{-4}$. The relationships are nearly identical to previously reported ones. We probe possible connections between the extension sizes of the VHE sources and the pulsars' ages, and find a weak older-and-smaller trend. By comparing to the VHE detection results for PWNe, it is clear that the (candidate) TeV halos have hard emissions by either having their power-law indices be smaller than 2 in 1--25\,TeV or by only being detected in 25--100\,TeV. In addition, we also consider seven other VHE sources as possible TeV halos based on the results from different studies of them, but they do not fit cleanly with the properties listed above, indicating their potentially complex nature., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, referee's comments incorporated, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Galactic Center Excess (GCE) $\gamma$-ray emission detected with the Large Area Telescope onboard the {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope} has been considered as a possible sign for dark matter (DM) annihilation, but other possibilities such as the millisecond pulsar (MSP) origin have also been suggested. As a spectral fitting method, constructed based on properties of $\gamma$-ray MSPs, has been developed, we apply this method to the study of the GCE emission for the purpose of probing the MSP origin for the GCE. A number of $\sim$1660 MSPs can provide a fit to the spectrum of the GCE emission upto $\sim$10\,GeV, but the higher energy part of the spectrum requires additional emission components. We further carry out a stacking analysis of 30--500\,GeV data for relatively nearby $\gamma$-ray MSPs, and the resulting flux upper limits are still lower than those of the GCE emission. We consider the single DM annihilation channel $\tau^{+}\tau^{-}$ or channel $b\bar{b}$,or the combination of the two for comparison, and find they generally can provide better fits than MSPs. Combination of MSPs plus a DM channel are also tested, and MSPs plus the DM channel $b\bar{b}$ can always provide better fits. Comparing this combination case to the pure DM channel $b\bar{b}$, the MSP contribution is found to be marginally needed., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

TeV halos have been suggested as a common phenomenon associated with middle-aged pulsars. Based on our recent work on PSR~J0631+1036, which is the only known source positionally coincident with a hard TeV gamma-ray source and likely powers the latter as a TeV halo, we select 3 candidate TeV halos from the first Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) catalog of gamma-ray sources. The corresponding pulsars, given by the positional coincidences and property similarities, are PSR J1958+2846, PSR J2028+3332, and PSR J1849$-$0001. We analyze the GeV $\gamma$-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope} for the first two pulsars, as the last is gamma-ray quiet. We remove the pulsed emissions of the pulsars from the source regions from timing analysis, and determine that there are no residual GeV emissions in the regions as any possible counterparts to the TeV sources. Considering the previous observational results for the source regions and comparing the two pulsars to Geminga (and Monogem), the LHAASO-detected TeV sources are likely the pulsars' respective TeV halos. We find that the candidate and identified TeV halos, including that of PSR~J1849$-$0001, have luminosites at 50 TeV (estimated from the differential fluxes) approximately proportional to the spin-down energy $\dot{E}$ of the pulsars, and the ratios of the former to the latter are $\sim 6\times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, to appear on ApJ

Intrigued by recent high-energy study results for nearby galaxies with gamma-ray emission and in particular NGC~1068 that has been detected as a neutrino-emitting source by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, we conduct detailed analysis of the $\gamma$-ray data for the galaxies NGC~1068 and NGC~253, obtained with the Large Area Telescope onboard {\it the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}. By checking for their possible spectral features and then constructing light curves in corresponding energy ranges, we identify spectral-change activity from NGC ~1068 in $\geq$2\,GeV energy range and long-term detection significance changes for NGC~253 in $\geq$5\,GeV energy range. In the former, the emission appears harder in two half-year time periods than that in the otherwise `quiescent' state. In the latter, a $\sim$2-times detection significance decrease after MJD~57023 is clearly revealed by the test-statistic maps we obtain. Considering studies carried out and models proposed for the $\gamma$-ray emissions of the two sources, we discuss the implications of our findings. We suspect that the jet (or outflow) in NGC~1068 might contribute to the \gr\ emission. The nature of the long-term detection significance change for NGC~253 is not clear, but since the part of the GeV emission may be connected to the very-high-energy (VHE) emission from the center of the galaxy, it could be further probed with VHE observations., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, revised by incorporating Referee's comments, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. PSR~J0631+1036 is a middle-aged pulsar with properties similar to those of the nearby Geminga pulsar. It is bright in $\gamma$-rays, and has been noted as the only source possibly associated with the TeV source 3HWC J0631+107 (also the LHAASO J0631+1040). For understanding the nature of the TeV source, we analyze the GeV $\gamma$-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope} for the source region. We are able to remove the pulsar's emission from the region from timing analysis, and find that the region is rather clean without possible GeV $\gamma$-ray emission present as the counterpart to the TeV source. By comparing this pulsar to Geminga and considering the spectral feature of the TeV source, we argue that it is likely the TeV halo powered by the pulsar., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tables, to appear on ApJ

We report on the detection of a gamma-ray source at the position of the nearby star-forming galaxy (SFG) M83, which is found from our analysis of 14 years of the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi)}. The source is weakly detected, with a significance of $\sim 5\sigma$, and its emission can be described with an exponentially cutoff power law. At a distance of 4.61\,Mpc, the source's gamma-ray luminosity is $\sim 1.4\times 10^{39}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$, roughly along the correlation line between the \gr\ and IR luminosities determined for nearby SFGs. Because of the weak detection, the source spectrum can not be used for checking its similarity with those of other SFGs. Given the positional matches and the empirical expectation for gamma-ray emission from M83 due to the galaxy's star-forming activity, we conclude that the gamma-ray source is the likely counterpart to m83. The detection thus adds another member to the group of approximately a dozen SFGs, whose \gr\ emissions mostly have a cosmic-ray origin., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Using the $\gamma$-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi)} for $\sim$14 years, we examine the high energy emission emanating from the center of the Andromeda Galaxy M31. Different from previously reported results, which show a seemingly extended source, we instead find two individual point sources, one consistent with being at the center and one 0\fdg4 south-east of the center. The emission of the former is well described using a Log-Parabola model, similar to those of previous studies, and that of the latter can be fitted with a power law. We discuss the possible origins for the two sources. M31's central source, now consistent with being a point source, necessitates a revisit of its previously discussed originations with this new property taken into consideration, in particular those cosmic rays or dark matter scenarios involving extended source distributions. The SE source appears to have a projected distance of $\sim$6\,kpc from M31's center, and the investigation is required as to whether it is a source locally associated with M31, or is instead a background extra-galactic one., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

We report our search for quasi-periodic signals in long-term optical and $\gamma$-ray data for the blazar PKS~1222+216, where the data are from the Steward Observatory blazar monitoring program and the all-sky survey with the Large Area Telescope onboard the {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}, respectively. A quasi-periodic signal, with a period of $\simeq$420\,days and a significance of $>5\sigma$, is found in the measurements of the optical linear polarization degree for the source, while no similar signals are found in the optical and $\gamma$-ray light curves covering approximately the same time period of $\sim$10\,yr. We study the quasi-periodic variations by applying a helical jet model and find that the model can provide a good explanation. This work shows that polarimetry can be a powerful tool for revealing the physical properties, in particular the configuration of the magnetic fields of jets from galactic supermassive black holes., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, appears in ApJ

We report a candidate tidal disruption event (TDE) found in the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey data. This candidate, with its transient name AT2021acak, showed brightness increases of $\sim$1\,mag around MJD~59500 and subsequent power-law--like brightness declines. We have conducted multiple optical spectroscopic observations with the 2.4-m Lijiang telescope and one observation at X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) bands with the {\it Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift)}. The optical spectra of the source show broad H and He emission line and Fe emission features. Possible 0.3--2\,keV X-ray and bright UV emission of the source was detected. We analyze the declines of the optical light curves, the emission features of the optical spectra, and the constructed broad-band UV and optical spectrum. The properties derived from the analyses are consistent with those of reported (candidate) TDEs, and in particular very similar to those of ASASSN-18jd. The identification is complicated by the host being likely an AGN, and thus further observations of the event and quiescent host are required in order to have a clear understanding of the nature of this transient event., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in RAA

Motivated by the newly discovery of a spin period 1.83\,ms pulsar J1835$-$3259B in the globular cluster (GC) NGC~6652, we analyze the gamma-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi)} for the GC and detect the pulsations of this millisecond pulsar (MSP) at a 5.4$\sigma$ confidence level (the weighted H-test value is $\sim 41$). From timing analysis of the data, a pulse profile that is similar to the radio one is established. We thus consider that we have detected the \gr\ emission of the MSP, and discuss the implications. Based on our analysis results and different studies of the sources in the GC, the observed gamma-ray emission from the GC could mainly arise from this MSP, like the previous two cases the GCs NGC~6624 and NGC~6626. Assuming this is the case, the pulsar, at the GC's 9.46\,kpc distance and having a spin-down luminosity of $\leq 4.3\times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$, would have a gamma-ray luminosity of $\simeq (5.04\pm0.44)\times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a gamma-ray efficiency of $\gtrsim 0.12$., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in ApJL

We report on the case of optical periodic modulation discovered in two Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and one candidate AGN. Analyzing the archival optical data obtained from large transient surveys, namely the Catalina Real-Transient Survey (CRTS) and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we find periodicities of 2169.7, 2103.1, and 1462.6\,day in sources J0122+1032, J1007+1248 (or PG~1004+1248), and J2131$-$1127, respectively. The optical spectra of the first two indicate that the first is likely a blazar and the second a type 1 Seyfert galaxy, and while no spectroscopic information is available for the third one, its overall properties suggest that it is likely an AGN. In addition, mid-infrared (MIR) light curve data of the three sources, taken by the Wide-field InfraredSurvey Explorer (WISE), are also analyzed. The light curves show significant variations, but not appearing related to the optical periodicities. Based on the widely-discussed super-massive black-hole binary (SMBHB) scenario, we discuss the origin of the optical modulation. Two possible interesting features, an additional 162-day short optical periodicity in J2131$-$1127 and the consistency the X-ray flux variations of J1007+1248 with its optical periodicity, are also discussed within the SMBHB scenario., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The nearby Seyfert type galaxy NGC 1275 contains a bright radio nucleus at its center, revealed through high-spatial resolution imaging to be the source of the jets emanating from the galaxy. Coincident with the emergence of a new component C3 in the nucleus since 2005, flux densities from NGC 1275, at least at radio, millimeter (mm), and gamma-ray frequencies, had been increasing up through 2017 and leveled off afterwards. We analyze the long-term light curves of the nucleus that span the rising trend to 2015 July, and find a pair of approximately year-long quasi-periodic oscillations, with periods of $P_l\simeq 345$\,d and $P_h\simeq 386$\,d respectively, in emission at 1.3-mm wavelength. We discuss the case that there would be a long precession period $P_{\rm prec}\simeq 9$\,yr, causing the appearance of $P_h$ that is slightly higher than $P_l$. The accretion disk around the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) would be precessing at $P_{\rm prec}$, induced by either the Lense-Thirring effect or the existence of a companion SMBH. In the two scenarios, $P_l$ would be the jet wobbling timescale or the SMBH binary period respectively. The finding, which could be verified through high-spatial resolution mm imaging, would not only identify the nature of the jet variation but also help reveal the full features of the galaxy., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the gamma-ray spectra of 30 globular clusters (GCs) thus far detected with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Presuming that gamma-ray emission of a GC comes from millisecond pulsars (MSPs) contained in, a model that generates spectra for the GCs is built based on the gamma-ray properties of the detected MSP sample. We fit the GCs' spectra with the model, and for 27 of them, their emission can be explained with arising from MSPs. The spectra of the other three, NGC 7078, 2MS-GC01, and Terzan 1, can not be fit with our model, indicating that MSPs' emission should not be the dominant one in the first two and the third one has a unique hard spectrum. We also investigate six nearby GCs that have relatively high encounter rates as the comparison cases. The candidate spectrum of NGC 6656 can be fit with that of one MSP, supporting its possible association with the gamma-ray source at its position. The five others do not have detectable gamma-ray emission. Their spectral upper limits set limits of $\leq 1$ MSPs in them, consistent with the numbers of radio MSPs found in them. The estimated numbers of MSPs in the gamma-ray GCs generally match well those reported for radio pulsars. Our studies of the gamma-ray GCs and the comparison nearby GCs indicate that the encounter rate should not be the only factor determining the number of MSPs a GC contains., Comment: 26 pages, 21 figures, 2 tables. We report a possible $\gamma$-ray enhancement event detected from Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR), the outcome of a type Ia supernova explosion that occurred in year 1572. The event lasted for 1.5 years and showed a factor of 3.6 flux increase mainly in the energy range of 4--100 GeV, while notably accompanied with two 478\,GeV photons. Several young SNRs (including Tycho's SNR) were previously found to show peculiar X-ray structures with flux variations in one- or several-year timescales, such an event at $\gamma$-ray energies is for the first time seen. The year-long timescale of the event suggests a synchrotron radiation process, but the hard $\gamma$-ray emission requires extreme conditions of either ultra-high energies for the electrons upto $\sim$10 PeV (well above the cosmic-ray "knee" energy) or high inhomogeneity of the magnetic field in the SNR. This event in Tycho's SNR is likely analogous to the $\gamma$-ray flares observed in the Crab nebula, the comparably short timescales of them both requiring a synchrotron process, and similar magnetohydrodynamic processes such as magnetic reconnection would be at work as well in the SNR to accelerate particles to ultra-relativistic energies. We analyze the 11-year long-term light curve of the Radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy J0849+5108 and the nearly simultaneous $\gamma$-ray data of the source. The data were obtained with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory 40-m telescope at 15~GHz and with the Large Area Telescope onboard Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, respectively. A quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) signal at a significance of $>$5$\sigma$ is found in the radio light curve, but no similar modulation is seen in the $\gamma$-ray light curve. The QPO signal was present for 21 cycles, the longest among the reported radio QPOs, and likely disappeared after 2019 January 16. Different mechanisms proposed to explain the observed QPOs in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are discussed for this QPO case. Either a secular instability in the inner accretion disk or a helical structure in the jet of J0849+5108 may explain the radio QPO, while for the latter scenario the jet has to be collimated up to $\sim$200~pc, similar to that seen in the nearby AGN M87. It will be of interests to keep monitoring the source at radio frequencies, seeing if similar QPO signals would appear again or not., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; submitted to ApJ

We report detection of a line-like feature in the $\gamma$-ray spectrum of the blazar B0516$-$621, for which the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope onboard {\it Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (Fermi)} are analyzed. The feature is at $\sim$7\,GeV and different analyses are conducted to check its real presence. We determine that it has a significance of 2.5--3.0$\sigma$, and cautiously note the presence of possible systematics in the data which could reduce the significance. This putative feature is too narrow to be explained with radiation processes generally considered for jet emission of blazars. Instead, it could be a signal due to the oscillations between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs) in the source's jet. We investigate this possibility by fitting the spectrum with the photon-ALP oscillation model, and find that the parameter space of ALP mass $m_a\leq 10^{-8}$\,eV and the coupling constant (between photons and ALPs) $g_{a\gamma}$=1.16--1.48$\times 10^{-10}$\,GeV$^{-1}$ can provide a fit to the line-like feature, while the magnetic field at the emission site of $\gamma$-rays is fixed at 0.7\,G. The ranges for $m_a$ and $g_{a\gamma}$ are in tension with those previously obtained from several experiments or methods, but on the other hand in line with some of the others. This spectral-feature case and its possible indication for ALP existence could be checked from similar studies of other blazar systems and also suggest a direction of effort for building future high-energy facilities that would have high sensitivities and spectral resolutions for searching for similar features., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to appear in JCAP

The microquasar V404 Cygni (also known as GS 2023+338) was previously reported to have weak GeV gamma-ray emission in sub-day time periods during its 2015 outburst. In order to provide more detailed information at the high energy range for this black hole binary system, we conduct analysis to the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). Both LAT database and source catalog used are the latest. In addition to the previously reported detection at the peak of the 2015 outburst, we find possible detection ($\sim 4\sigma$) of the source during 3-day time period of 2015 Aug. 17--19 (at the end of the 2015 outburst) and one convincing detection ($\simeq 7\sigma$) in 2016 Aug. 23--25. The latter high-significance detection shows that the gamma-ray emission of the source is soft with photon index $\Gamma\sim 2.9$. As gamma-ray emission from microquasars is considered to be associated with their jet activity, we discuss the results by comparing with those well studied cases, namely Cyg X-3 and Cyg X-1. The detection helps identify V404 Cygni as a microquasar with detectable gamma-ray emission in its quiescent state, and adds interesting features to the microquasar group, or in a more general context to X-ray binaries with jets., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

4FGL J0935.3+0901 is a gamma-ray source detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. We have conducted detailed analysis of the LAT data for this source and multi-wavelength studies of the source field. Its gamma-ray emission can be described with a power law ($\Gamma=2.0\pm0.2$) with an exponential cutoff ($E_c=2.9\pm1.6$ GeV), while the flux shows significant long-term variations. From analysis of archival Neil Gehrels Swift X-ray Telescope data, we find only one X-ray source in the LAT's 2$\sigma$ error region. Within a 3.7" radius error circle of the X-ray source, there is only one optical object down to $r'\sim$23 mag. Time-resolved photometry of the optical object indicates a likely 2.5~hr periodic modulation, while its spectrum shows double-peaked hydrogen and helium emission lines (similar to those seen in accretion discs in low-mass X-ray binaries). Combining these results, we conclude that we have discovered a compact X-ray emitting binary in likely association with 4FGL J0935.3+0901, i.e., a millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary. We discuss the implication of the optical spectral features: this binary could be a transitional MSP system at a sub-luminous disc state, although the other possibility, the binary in a rotation-powered state showing the optical emission lines due to intrabinary interaction processes, can not be excluded. We search through $\gamma$-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope and find 24 blazars (or candidates) that have a single clear flare event in their 9.5 year long-term light curves. We define these events as loner flares since each flare stands out significantly above the relatively stable, low-flux light curve. We analyze the LAT data in detail for these 24 sources. The flares in ten of them are primarily due to a single sharp peak, for which we study by fitting with two different analytic functions. The time durations thus determined for the sharp peaks are in a range of 4-25 days. The $\gamma$-ray spectra of the 24 blazar sources can be described with a power-law or a log-parabola function. We obtain their spectral properties in the flaring and quiescent states, and find that in the flares 16 of the sources have harder emission and three have softer emission while the other five keep the same emission. We discuss a possible correlation between the differences in photon index in the quiescent and flaring states and photon indices in quiescence. In addition, the sharp peak flares seem to have a tendency of having long time durations and hard emission, possibly related to their physical origin in a blazar jet. Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. The data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have recently been updated. We thus re-analyze the LAT data for the supernova remnant (SNR) SN 1006. Two parts of gamma-ray emission from the region is clearly resolved, which correspond to the north-east (NE) and south-west (SW) limbs of the SNR. The former was detected in the previous LAT data (Xing et al. 2016), but the latter is newly detected in this work. The detection of the two limbs are at a 4 sigma significance level, and the spectral results for the NE limb is consistent with those obtained in previous detection analyses. We construct the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) for the SW limb. Different scenarios are considered for the SED in gamma-ray energies. We conclude very similar to that of the NE limb, the high-energy and very high-energy emission from the SW limb is likely dominated by the leptonic process, in which high-energy electrons accelerated from the shell region of the SNR inverse-Compton scatter background photons to gamma-rays., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We are starting a project to find $\gamma$-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) among the unidentified sources detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the {Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (Fermi)}, by radio observations. The selection of good candidates from analysis of the LAT data is an important part of the project. Given that there is more than 10 years worth of LAT data and the advent of the newly released LAT 8-year point source list (FL8Y), we have conducted a selection analysis, on the basis of our previous analysis, and report the results here. Setting the requirements for the unidentified sources in FL8Y of Galactic latitudes $|b|>$ 5$^\circ$ and curvature significances $>$3$\sigma$, there are 202 sources with detection signficances $>$6$\sigma$. We select 57 relatively bright ones (detection significances $>$15$\sigma$) and analyze their 10.2 years of LAT data. Their variability is checked to exclude variable sources (likely~blazars), test statistic maps are constructed to avoid contaminated sources, and curvature significances are re-obtained and compared to their $\gamma$-ray spectra to exclude non-significant sources. In the end, 48 candidates are found. Based on the available information, mostly from multi-wavelength studies, we discuss the possible nature of several of the candidates. In our search for gamma-ray emission from Be X-ray binaries from analysis of the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, we find likely detection of GRO J1008-57. The binary has an orbital period of 249.48 days, and it is only significantly detected in its orbital phase 0.8--0.9 (>4 sigma). Further light curve analysis indicates that the detection is probably largely due to an emitting event in one orbital cycle around year 2012--2013, following a giant X-ray outburst of the source. This property of having occasional gamma-ray emitting events is similar to that seen in another high-mass X-ray binary 4U 1036-56. However, models considering possible gamma-ray emission from an accreting neutron star have difficulty in explaining the observed 10^{34} erg s^{-1} luminosity of the source, unless the distance was largely over-estimated. Further observational studies are required, in order to more clearly establish the high-energy emission properties of GRO J1008-57 or similar high-mass X-ray binaries and find clues for understanding how gamma-ray emission is produced from them., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We report our analysis of the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) for the SS 433/W50 region. The total data length is ten years. Different from the previous results reported for this region (for which an old version of database was used), we show that excess emission is detected around the w1 region in the western lobe of the jets from SS 433. The region is bright at X-rays due to the interaction between the jet and the ambient medium. This detection also matches well the recent results of the very-high-energy detection of SS 433/W50 with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC). However, the eastern regions that are slightly brighter in HAWC's observation are not detected in the Fermi data. Constructing the broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) for the western region, we compare with the HAWC results for the eastern regions and discuss the possible origin of the emission. A leptonic scenario can provide a fit to the Fermi GeV spectrum and HAWC TeV detection, where the former and latter are due to the synchrotron radiation and inverse-Compton process respectively. However, the model can not explain the X-ray and radio emission from the region simultaneously, which thus requires further observational and theoretical studies of the region in order to clarify the reasons., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Since 2016 October, the active galaxy PKS 2247-131 has undergone a gamma-ray outburst, which we studied using data obtained with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The emission arises from a relativistic jet in PKS 2247-131, as an optical spectrum only shows a few weak absorption lines, typical of the BL Lacertae sub-class of the blazar class of active galactic nuclei. Here we report a ~34.5 day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the emission after the initial flux peak of the outburst. Compared to one-year time-scale QPOs, previously identified in blazars in Fermi energies, PKS 2247-131 exhibits the first clear case of a relatively short, month-like oscillation. We show that this QPO can be explained in terms of a helical structure in the jet, where the viewing angle to the dominant emission region in the jet undergoes periodic changes. School bus planning problem (SBPP) has drawn much research attention due to the huge costs of school transportation. In the literature, the SBPP is usually decomposed into the routing and scheduling subproblems due to its complexity. Because of the nature of the decomposition, even if all the subproblems are solved to optimality, the final solution may not be as good as the solution from the integrated model. In this paper, we present a new approach that incorporates the scheduling information (namely the trip compatibility) into the routing stage such that the interrelationship between the subproblems is still considered even in the decomposed problems. A novel two-step heuristic adopting the trip compatibility idea is presented to solve the school bus routing problem. The first step finds an initial solution using an iterative minimum cost matching-based insertion heuristic. Then, the initial trips are improved using a Simulated Annealing and Tabu Search hybrid method. Experiments were conducted on randomly generated problems and benchmark problems in the literature. The result shows that our two-step heuristic improves existing solutions up to 25% on the benchmark problems.

Very faint X-ray transients (VFXTs) are a group of X-ray binaries with low luminosities, the peak X-ray luminosities during their outbursts being only 10$^{34}$--10$^{36}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$. Using the $\gamma$-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope}, we investigate their possible nature of containing rotation-powered pulsars, or more specifically being transitional millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Among more than 40 known VFXTs, we select 12 neutron star systems. We analyze the LAT data for the fields of the 12 VFXTs in 0.2--300 GeV energy range, but do not find any counterparts likely detected by {\it Fermi}. We obtain the luminosity upper limits for the 12 sources. While the distances to the sources are largely uncertain, the upper limits are comparable to the luminosities of two transitional systems PSR J1023$-$0038 and XSS J12270$-$4859. From our study, we conclude that no evidence is found at $\gamma$-rays for the suggestion that some of VFXTs could contain rotation-powered MSPs (or be transitional MSP systems)., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Crowdsourced GPS probe data has been gaining popularity in recent years as a source for real-time traffic information. Efforts have been made to evaluate the quality of such data from different perspectives. A quality indicator of any traffic data source is latency that describes the punctuality of data, which is critical for real-time operations, emergency response, and traveler information systems. This paper offers a methodology for measuring the probe data latency, with respect to a selected reference source. Although Bluetooth re-identification data is used as the reference source, the methodology can be applied to any other ground-truth data source of choice (i.e. Automatic License Plate Readers, Electronic Toll Tag). The core of the methodology is a maximum pattern matching algorithm that works with three different fitness objectives. To test the methodology, sample field reference data were collected on multiple freeways segments for a two-week period using portable Bluetooth sensors as ground-truth. Equivalent GPS probe data was obtained from a private vendor, and its latency was evaluated. Latency at different times of the day, the impact of road segmentation scheme on latency, and sensitivity of the latency to both speed slowdown, and recovery from slowdown episodes are also discussed.

Crowdsourced GPS probe data has become a major source of real-time traffic information applications. In addition to traditional traveler advisory systems such as dynamic message signs (DMS) and 511 systems, probe data is being used for automatic incident detection, Integrated Corridor Management (ICM), end of queue warning systems, and mobility-related smartphone applications. Several private sector vendors offer minute by minute network-wide travel time and speed probe data. The quality of such data in terms of deviation of the reported travel time and speeds from ground-truth has been extensively studied in recent years, and as a result concerns over the accuracy of probe data has mostly faded away. However, the latency of probe data, defined as the lag between the time that disturbance in traffic speed is reported in the outsourced data feed, and the time that the traffic is perturbed, has become a subject of interest. The extent of latency of probe data for real-time applications is critical, so it is important to have a good understanding of the amount of latency and its influencing factors. This paper uses high-quality independent Bluetooth/Wi-Fi re-identification data collected on multiple freeway segments in three different states, to measure the latency of the vehicle probe data provided by three major vendors. Safely serving the school transportation demand with the minimum number of buses is one of the highest financial goals of school transportation directors. To achieve that objective, a good and efficient way to solve the routing and scheduling problem is required. Due to the growth of the computing power, the spotlight has been shed on solving the combined problem of the school bus routing and scheduling problem. We show that an integrated multi-school bus routing and scheduling can be formulated with the help of trip compatibility. A novel decomposition algorithm is proposed to solve the integrated model. The merit of this integrated model and the decomposition method is that with the consideration of the trip compatibility, the interrelationship between the routing and scheduling sub-problems will not be lost in the process of decomposition. Results show the proposed decomposed problem could provide the solutions using the same number of buses as the integrated model in much shorter time (as little as 0.6%) and that the proposed method can save up to 26% number of buses from existing research., Comment: This paper was accepted for presentation at TRB Annual Meeting 2018

School bus planning is usually divided into routing and scheduling due to the complexity of solving them concurrently. However, the separation between these two steps may lead to worse solutions with higher overall costs than that from solving them together. When finding the minimal number of trips in the routing problem, neglecting the importance of trip compatibility may increase the number of buses actually needed in the scheduling problem. This paper proposes a new formulation for the multi-school homogeneous fleet routing problem that maximizes trip compatibility while minimizing total travel time. This incorporates the trip compatibility for the scheduling problem in the routing problem. Since the problem is inherently just a routing problem, finding a good solution is not cumbersome. To compare the performance of the model with traditional routing problems, we generate eight mid-size data sets. Through importing the generated trips of the routing problems into the bus scheduling (blocking) problem, it is shown that the proposed model uses up to 13% fewer buses than the common traditional routing models., Comment: The final version of this paper will be published in Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2667. We investigate the long-term spectral variability in the ultra-luminous X-ray source Holmberg IX X--1. By analyzing the data from eight {\it Suzaku} and 13 {\it XMM-Newton} observations conducted between 2001 and 2015, we perform a detailed spectral modeling for all spectra with simple models and complex physical models. We find that the spectra can be well explained by a disc plus thermal Comptonization model. Applying this model, we unveil correlations between the X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$) and the spectral parameters. Among the correlations, a particular one is the statistically significant positive correlation between $L_{\rm X}$ and the photon index ($\Gamma$), while at the high luminosities of $> 2\times10^{40}\,{\rm~erg\ s}^{-1}$, the source becomes marginally hard and that results a change in the slope of the $\Gamma - L_{\rm X}$ correlation. Similar variability behavior is observed in the optical depth of the source around $L_{\rm X} \sim 2\times10^{40}\,{\rm~erg\ s}^{-1}$ as the source becomes more optically thick. We consider the scenario that a corona covers the inner part of the disc, and the correlations can be explained as to be driven by the variability of seed photons from the disc input into the corona. On the basis of the disc-corona model, we discuss the physical processes that are possibly indicated by the variability of the spectral parameters.
