Abstract

‘Lingwu Changzao’ (Ziziphus jujuba Mill. cv. Lingwuchangzao), a cultivar of Ziziphus in the Rhamnaceae family, is a traditional jujube cultivar in Ningxia, China. For ‘Lingwu Changzao’, morphological traits are prominent in characterizing fruit yield, quality, and consumer acceptance. However, morphological measurements for ‘Lingwu Changzao’ cultivation are limited. Therefore, the objective of this study is to measure the growing patterns of selected morphological traits during ‘Lingwu Changzao’ fruit development. Eight morphological traits, including four fruit traits (fruit length, diameter, weight, and flesh (mesocarp) thickness), three stone traits (stone length, diameter, and weight), and fruit firmness (also known as fruit hardness), were measured over a 3-mo (months) period, covering a completed fruit development period. Results indicate that the growing patterns of fruit traits coincide with double ‘S’ growth curves, which mainly present the growth of ‘Lingwu Changzao’ fruit. Increases of stone traits terminated in the early fruit growth period, while fruit traits continuously increased till the end of the 3-mo period. That implies a high fruit-stone ratio, i.e., a desirable quality attribute for ‘Lingwu Changzao’ as fresh-eating fruits. The results presented in this study can serve as one part of the standard dataset for jujube fruit cultivation in China, and it can also support decisions in plant breeding and field managements for ‘Lingwu Changzao’.

40. Time domain reflectometry waveform analysis with second order bounded mean oscillation

Abstract

Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is a well-established electromagnetic technique used to estimate in situ soil water content, and thermo-TDR is an extension of the traditional TDR, which can measure both soil water content and thermal properties. Tangent line methods and adaptive waveform interpretation with Gaussian filters (AWIGF) are used in traditional TDR waveform analysis. However, due to the short probe design of thermo-TDR, those methods may not perform well. In this thesis, we present an alternative method in TDR waveform analysis based on the second order bounded mean oscillation (BMO) operator. Numerical analysis and laboratory calibration tests show that the second order BMO can return reasonable results compared with tangent line methods and AWIGF. Second order BMO analysis also performs well for some challenging waveforms. The second order BMO method is not totally automatic due to the large variation of TDR waveforms, and manual adjustment of some parameters is necessary. A MATLAB program of the implementation of second order BMO method is developed, and instructions for users of the program is also provided. The results show that second order BMO is a valid alternative method for TDR waveform analysis.

45. Evaluation of Different Crop Models for Simulating Rice Development and Yield in the U.S. Mississippi Delta.

Abstract

The United States is one of the top rice exporters in the world, but warming temperatures and other climate trends may affect grain yield and quality. The use of crop models as decision support tools for a climate impact assessment would be beneficial, but suitability of models for representative growing conditions need to be verified. Therefore, the ability of CERES-Rice and ORYZA crop models to predict rice yield and growing season duration in the Mississippi Delta region was assessed for two widely-grown varieties using a 34-year database. CERES-Rice simulated growth duration more accurately than ORYZA as a result of the latter model's use of lower cardinal temperatures. An increase in base and optimal temperatures improved ORYZA accuracy and reduced systematic error (e.g., correlation coefficient increased by 0.03–0.27 and root mean square error decreased by 0.3–1.9 days). Both models subsequently showed acceptable skill in reproducing the growing season duration and had similar performance for predicting rice yield for most locations and years. CERES-Rice predictions were more sensitive to years with lower solar radiation, but neither model accurately mimicked negative impacts of very warm or cold temperatures. Both models were shown to reproduce 50% percentile yield trends of more than 100 varieties in the region for the 34-year period when calibrated with two representative cultivars. These results suggest that both models are suitable for exploring the general response of multiple rice cultivars in the Mississippi Delta region for decision support studies involving the current climate. The response of rice growth and development to cold injury and high temperature stress, and variation in cultivar sensitivity, should be further developed and tested for improved decision making tools.
