Aerosol plays an important role in global climate and weather changes. Polarization lidar captures parallel and perpendicular signals from atmosphere to research aerosols. The lidar system we used has three emission wavelengths and could obtain the atmospheric aerosol extinction coefficient, backscattering coefficient and depolarization ratio. In this paper, the design of the lidar is described. The methods of data acquisition and inversion are given. Some recent results are presented.

A Three-Wavelength Polarization-Raman Lidar (TWPRL) system for aerosol and clouds was developed. This lidar system provides α at 532 and 355 nm, β at 355, 532 and 1064 nm, and σ at 532 nm as well as water vapor content using Raman lidar techniques. The temporal and vertical variation of aerosols and clouds could be determined. We conducted shipborne TWPRL measurements over Yellow Sea of China from August to September in 2014. The derived aerosol optical properties indicate that the developed lidar system worked very well. 24-hour continuous measurements with the shipborne TWPRL during the cruise are presented.

Vertical profiles of particulates were measured by a 355 nm Mie scattering lidar during a dust-storm event. A high energy pulse laser was employed as the light source to detect the extinction coefficient in the altitude up to 6 km in the day and 9 km at night. The extinction profiles showed layers of high aerosol concentrations in good agreement with ground-based pollution measurements, which indicated that such ultra-violet lidar is a very useful remote sensing instrument for monitoring extinction profiles during extreme high aerosol loading and low visibility atmospheric conditions when low energy lidar systems cannot obtain effective results.

The bacterial community performs an essential ecological role in maintaining agriculture systems. The roles of bacteria in the forest, marine, and agricultural systems have been studied extensively and intensively. However, similar studies in the areas irrigated by the Yellow River remain limited. In this study, we used Illumina sequencing analysis with the 16S rRNA method to analyze the bacterial diversity, community structure, and influencing factors in soil samples from eight regions of the Yellow River irrigation area in northwestern China. The bacterial community structure and diversity varied among samples from the eight regions. The samples differed significantly in terms of the bacterial community composition. Proteobacteria (approximately 12.4%-55.7%) accounted for the largest proportion and was the dominant bacteria, followed by Actinobacteria (approximately 9.2%-39.7%), Bacteroidetes (approximately 1.8%-21.5%), and Chloroflexi (approximately 2.7%-12.6%). Among the physicochemical variables, the soil pH in the eight regions was mildly alkaline, and the total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium contents in the soils differed significantly. However, the trend in the variations of the above variables was essentially similar. Soil bacteria in Yongning county had greater Chao1, Shannon-Wiener, and Simpson indices than those in the other regions. Notably, soil moisture, organic matter, and total nitrogen were recognized as the primary factors influencing the bacterial community in the Yellow River irrigation area. Our results revealed the laws of variation in soil bacterial diversity and community composition in the Yellow River irrigation area. An incoherent Doppler wind lidar based on iodine edge filters has been developed at the Ocean University of China for remote measurements of atmospheric wind fields. The lidar is compact enough to fit in a minivan for mobile deployment. With its sophisticated and user-friendly data acquisition and analysis system (DAAS), this lidar has made a variety of line-of-sight (LOS) wind measurements in different operational modes. Through carefully developed data retrieval procedures, various wind products are provided by the lidar, including wind profile, LOS wind velocities in plan position indicator (PPI) and range height indicator (RHI) modes, and sea surface wind. Data are processed and displayed in real time, and continuous wind measurements have been demonstrated for as many as 16 days. Full-azimuth-scanned wind measurements in PPI mode and full-elevation-scanned wind measurements in RHI mode have been achieved with this lidar. The detection range of LOS wind velocity PPI and RHI reaches 8-10 km at night and 6-8 km during daytime with range resolution of 10 m and temporal resolution of 3 min. In this paper, we introduce the DAAS architecture and describe the data retrieval methods for various operation modes. We present the measurement procedures and results of LOS wind velocities in PPI and RHI scans along with wind profiles obtained by Doppler beam swing. The sea surface wind measured for the sailing competition during the 2008 Beijing Olympics is also presented. The precision and accuracy of wind measurements are estimated through analysis of the random errors associated with photon noise and the systematic errors introduced by the assumptions made in data retrieval. The three assumptions of horizontal homogeneity of atmosphere, close-to-zero vertical wind, and uniform sensitivity are made in order to experimentally determine the zero wind ratio and the measurement sensitivity, which are important factors in LOS wind retrieval. Deviations may occur under certain meteorological conditions, leading to bias in these situations. Based on the error analyses and measurement results, we point out the application ranges of this Doppler lidar and propose several paths for future improvement. Soil salinization is one main environmental factor restricting plant growth and agricultural productivity. However, phytoremediation is one of the important means to improve saline-alkali soil by planting halophytes or salt-tolerant plants. In order to study whether there are differences among soil microorganisms in different phytoremediation, the effects of four plants, including alfalfa (MX), oil sunflower (YK), maize (YM) and ryegrass (HMC) on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity and microbial community diversity and composition were investigated in this study and the relationships between microbial community structure and soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity were analyzed. The results showed that all plants treatments significantly decreased pH, TS (total saltinity) and BD (bulk density), while increased OM (organic matter), TN (total nitrogen), AN (available nitrogen), TP (total phosphorus), AP (available phosphorus), TK (total potassium) and TPOR (total porosity), and the number of nitrite bacteria reduced by planting at the same time. Except for YM, other treatments significantly increased the number of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria compared with CK, while only YK increased that of fungi. Additionally, all plants increased the activity of nitrite reductase and decreased that of urease. More interestingly, plants treatments shifted microbial community compositions, and only YM significantly decreased the bacterial diversity and increased the fungal diversity. Redundancy analysis suggested that TK, pH, BD, TS, AN, OM and nitrite reductase, lignin peroxidase were the key environmental factors that shaped the bacterial community structure, while that of fungi was mainly driven by OM, nitrite reductase, urease and lignin peroxidase. The results indicated that MX and YM are the best choice for remediation of saline-alkali soil. These data can provide certain theoretical basis for the further restoration of saline-alkali land. The effects of different phytoremediation on microbial diversity and community structure were different. Phytoremediation can significantly decreased pH, TS and BD, while increased OM, TN, AN, TP, AP, TK and TPOR in saline-alkali soil.
