Rubber-foamed concrete demonstrates exceptional toughness, a low elastic modulus, and significant sensitivity to density. It is necessary to parameterize the density mix of rubber-foaming concrete to meet engineering design requirements. Density-mix design methods for foaming concrete rely mainly on empirical knowledge or trial-and-error approaches. In this paper, with numerous parametric tests and regression analysis based on general principles for density-mix designs applicable to both foamed and rubber-foamed concretes, the key design parameters, such as volume correction coefficient, rubber size effect coefficient, and water-reducing agent effect coefficient, have been proposed in order to optimize their respective densities more accurately. The tests demonstrated an optimal water-to-cement ratio of 0.45, corresponding to a volume correction factor of 1.027. Incorporating rubber particles and water-reducing agents has a more significant effect on the cement-paste volume. Controlling fluidity in the 200 to 300 mm range is crucial when designing foamed concrete with varying densities. The regression equation accurately predicts the paste’s measured volume and wetting density by incorporating volume corrections, size, and water reduction effect coefficients. By employing a foam excess coefficient of 1.1 and a mass coefficient of 1.25, the dry and wet density error of foam concrete is less than 5%. A comprehensive framework for optimizing mix design in terms of density is provided for applications in foamed concrete and rubber-foamed concrete, facilitating researchers in designing mix ratios for additional novel mixture-based foamed-concrete applications.

BackgroundThe relationship between normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and thyroid disease in adults remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between serum TSH levels, particularly those falling within the normal range, and thyroid diseases in Chinese adults, including thyroid nodules (TN), goiter (GR), and thyroid antibody positivity.Materials and methodsThis research was a cross-sectional study conducted in an adult population in Tianjin, China. Thyroid volume (Tvol) and TN were assessed using thyroid ultrasonography. Fasting venous blood and spot urine samples were collected to evaluate thyroid function and iodine status.ResultsA total of 2460 subjects participated in the survey. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was 9.76%, and abnormal TSH levels were found to potentially increase the risk of GR and thyroid antibody positivity in adults. A total of 2220 subjects with TSH within the normal reference range were included in the further study. In these patients, Tvol decreased as TSH levels increased, in both men and women (P < 0.0001). Low TSH levels (0.27–1.41 IU/mL) were identified as a risk factor for TN (odds ratio [OR], 1.46; 95% CI: 1.14-1.87) and GR (OR 5.90, 95% CI 2.27-15.3). In order to investigate the influence of different experimental conditions and additives on the performance of ultra-light aerated concrete (ULAC), more than 300 ULAC specimens with a dry density of around 160 kg/m3 were prepared in this study. The optimum conditions of the experimental process and the dosage range of three admixtures were obtained by two series of single-factor experiments. The results show that the unification of experimental conditions is necessary for the experimental process; the range of water-binder ratio (w/b) is 0.5 ∼ 0.52; the replacement ratio range of fly ash and silica fume are (Rf, 3∼6 %; Rsi, 3∼4 %); the amount of polypropylene fiber (Mpp) is 3∼5 %. Through orthogonal experimental design, the dependence of the compressive strength, flexural strength, dry density, thermal conductivity upon Rf, Rsi, w/b, Mpp, and conditioning agent (Ac, an inorganic material) of ULAC is here investigated. The impact of four factors and their interactions on all property indexes (PIs) was studied by analysis of variance. A modified multiple-index assessment method was proposed to optimize the parameter combination for four PIs of ULAC. The results show that the Rf is the significant influencing factor of all PIs, and the interactions among the three active additives significantly impact the performance of ULAC. Nevertheless, the interaction between Rf and w/b has little impact. The repeated tests show that the deviations between the property index and the target value obtained by the theoretical prediction model are 2.63 %, 2.59 %, 2 % and 4.79 %, respectively, and according to the comprehensive weighted scoring method, the deviations between them are 2.56 %, 1.44 %, 4 % and 4.6 %, respectively. The deviations obtained by the two methods are less than 5 %, demonstrating that this method could be widely used in the ULAC multi-index system parameter optimization.

Abstract Background Bougainvillea is a popular ornamental plant with brilliant color and long flowering periods. It is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics. The primary ornamental part of the plant is its colorful and unusual bracts, rich in the stable pigment betalain. The developmental mechanism of the bracts is not clear, and the pathway of betalain biosynthesis is well characterized in Bougainvillea. Results At the whole-genome level, we found 23,469 protein-coding genes by assembling the RNA-Seq and Iso-Seq data of floral and leaf tissues. Genome evolution analysis revealed that Bougainvillea is related to spinach; the two diverged approximately 52.7 million years ago (MYA). Transcriptome analysis of floral organs revealed that flower development of Bougainvillea was regulated by the ABCE flower development genes; A-class, B-class, and E-class genes exhibited high expression levels in bracts. Eight key genes of the betalain biosynthetic pathway were identified by homologous alignment, all of which were upregulated concurrently with bract development and betalain accumulation during the bract initiation stage of development. We found 47 genes specifically expressed in stamens, including seven highly expressed genes belonging to the pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathways. BgSEP2b, BgSWEET11, and BgRD22 are hub genes and interacted with many transcription factors and genes in the carpel co-expression network. Conclusions We assembled protein-coding genes of Bougainvilea, identified the floral development genes, and constructed the gene co-expression network of petal, stamens, and carpel. Our results provide fundamental information about the mechanism of flower development and pigment accumulation in Bougainvillea, and will facilitate breeding of cultivars with high ornamental value.

To investigate the effect of different iodide intake during pregnancy and lactation on thyroid function, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) metabolites, the expression of Krüppel-like factor KLF9 (KLF9), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in brain in offspring rats. In both male and female offspring rats, serum FT3, FT4 levels and the expression of KLF9, thyroid hormone receptors (TR)α, TRβ and BDNF in the hippocampal region and cerebellum were significantly increased in 5 times higher-than-normal pregnant iodide intake (5 HI) and 10 times higher-than-normal pregnant iodide intake (10 HI) group. The median levels of DHA metabolite (17-HDoHE) and EPA metabolites (15-HEPE, 17,18-EEQ, 9-HEPE and 14,15-DiHETE) were significantly increased in 5 HI and 10 HI group of offspring rats. Serum DHA, EPA metabolites and KLF9 as well as BDNF expression in brain might be potential iodine status biomarkers to reflect brain development in offspring.

BackgroundThe iodine supply of exclusively breastfed infants entirely depends upon breast milk. Changes in breast milk iodine affect infants’ iodine nutritional status. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the characteristics and predictors of breast milk iodine concentration (BMIC).Materials and methodsThis 7-day iodine metabolism experiment was conducted in 25 exclusively breastfed mother-infant pairs. The duplicate portion method was used to measure the mother’s daily iodine intake from foods and water, and maternal 24-h urine excretion was assessed. We recorded the number of breastfeeds per mother per day and collected breast milk samples before and after each feeding.ResultsThe median [quartile (Q)1–Q3 range] of BMIC was 115 (86.7, 172) μg/L. The BMIC before breastfeeding was generally higher than that after breastfeeding. Time-sequential analysis found that morning BMIC was most highly correlated with the prior day’s iodine intake. Breast milk samples taken in the afternoon or after midnight are closer to the median level of BMIC throughout the day. The number of breast milk samples needed to estimate the iodine level with 95% CI within precision ranges of ± 20% was 83 for a population, 9 for an individual, and 2 for an individual’s single day. Maternal total iodine intake (TII) and urine iodine were significantly associated with BMIC. 24-h urinary iodine excretion (24-h UIE) was found to be the best predictive indicator for the BMIC (β = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.64, 0.79).ConclusionBMIC is a constantly changing indicator and trended downward during each breastfeeding. Breast milk samples taken in the afternoon or after midnight are most representative. BMIC was significantly associated with recent iodine intake. Maternal 24-h UIE was the best predictor of BMIC.

Keloid is a common benign skin tumor in the outpatient department, and patients are often accompanied by itching and pain. Since the pathogenesis is unknown, the effect of single method treatment is unsatisfactory, and therefore the recurrence rate is high. Therefore, comprehensive treatment is mostly used in clinical treatment. Adjuvant radiotherapy is currently one of the most effective treatments for keloid. After long-term clinical practice, brachytherapy and electron beam radiotherapy has increasingly become the gold standard of treatment, because brachytherapy provides more focused radiation treatment to focal tissue to significantly reduce recurrence rate, and better preserve normal tissue. With the development of new radiotherapy techniques, more options for the treatment of keloid. Currently, adjuvant radiotherapy has been widely recognized, but there is no consensus on the optimal protocol for adjuvant radiotherapy for keloids. This review provides a review of published treatment options and new radiotherapy techniques for adjuvant radiotherapy of keloids and gives a comprehensive evaluation for clinical treatment.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the effect of maternal iodine status on the brain development of offspring in rats. Since in human studies, the interference of environmental factors and other nutrients cannot be removed.Materials and methodsA total of 48 female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: low iodine (LI), normal iodine (NI), 10-fold high iodine (10HI), and 50-fold high iodine (50HI). The rats were killed on the 15th day of pregnancy and lactation after collecting 24-h urine. The iodine concentration in 24-h urine, blood, and placenta of pregnant rats, and 24-h urine, milk, blood, and mammary glands of lactating rats was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The thyroid hormone of pregnant and lactating rats was detected by chemiluminescence. The offspring were subjected to the Morris water maze on the 10th day after birth. Serum was collected to detect the thyroid hormone of offspring. The protein expression of neuroendocrine-specific protein (NSP)-A and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the offspring brain were studied.ResultsIodine storage in the placenta during pregnancy and mammary glands during lactation was positively correlated with iodine intake, and iodine storage in the placenta and mammary glands in the 50HI group was significantly higher than that in the NI group (P = 0.045 and P = 0.040). Compared with the NI group, the offspring thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level was significantly higher in the 10HI group (P = 0.046), and the FT4 level was significantly lower in the 50HI group (P = 0.032). The Morris water maze showed that LI and 50HI groups required longer time and distance to find the platform than the NI group (P < 0.001). The platform crossing numbers in the LI and 50HI groups decreased significantly (P < 0.001). The expression of NSP-A in offspring brain was lower in the 10HI and 50HI groups than in the NI group (P = 0.026 and P = 0,008). BDNF expression levels were significantly lower in the LI, 10HI, and 50HI groups than in the NI group (P < 0.001).ConclusionMaternal iodine intake affects iodine storage in the placenta and lactating mammary gland, which in turn affects thyroid function and BDNF and NSP-A expression in the offspring.

But the risk of goiter caused by different levels of HUI and HWI remains unclear. Objectives To explore the risk of goiter development caused by HUI and HWI, and compare the risk of goiter development from different levels of high iodine. Methods The Medline, Cochrane library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wan fang databases were searched for relevant population-based studies investigating the link between high iodine levels and goiter development in mainland China. Abstract Background The virus-induced genome editing (VIGE) system can be used to quickly identify gene functions and generate knock-out libraries as an alternative to the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). Although plant virus-mediated VIGE has been shown to have great application prospects, edited genes cannot be transferred to the next generations using this system, as viruses cannot enter into shoot apical meristem (SAM) in plants. Results We developed a novel cotton leaf crumple virus (CLCrV)-mediated VIGE system designed to target BRI1, GL2, PDS genes, and GUS transgene in A. thaliana by transforming Cas9 overexpression (Cas9-OE) A. thaliana. Given the deficiency of the VIGE system, ProYao::Cas9 and Pro35S::Cas9 A. thaliana were transformed by fusing 102 bp FT mRNAs with sgRNAs so as to explore the function of Flowering Locus T (FT) gene in delivering sgRNAs into SAM, thus avoiding tissue culture and stably acquiring heritable mutant offspring. Our results showed that sgRNAs fused with FT mRNA at the 5′ end (FT strategy) effectively enabled gene editing in infected plants and allowed the acquisition of mutations heritable by the next generation, with an efficiency of 4.35–8.79%. In addition, gene-edited offspring by FT-sgRNAs did not contain any components of the CLCrV genome. Conclusions FT strategy can be used to acquire heritable mutant offspring avoiding tissue culture and stable transformation based on the CLCrV-mediated VIGE system in A. thaliana.

Objectives: Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major nosocomial pathogen predominantly associated with indwelling medical device infections. Studies reporting on S. epidermidis recovered from hospital personnel in China are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the carriage and antibiotic resistance of S. epidermidis among the hospital personnel in Tianjin, China and provide insights into their genetic diversity. Methods: One hundred and seven S. epidermidis isolates were recovered from 68 hospital personnel in two public hospitals in Tianjin between March 2018 and May 2018. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types were determined by the combination of mec and ccr complexes. Multi-locus sequence typing was used to determine the sequence types (ST) of S. epidermidis isolates. Results: Sixty-two (76.5%) isolates were determined to be methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE). Thirty-five (51%) of 68 hospital personnel carried S. epidermidis, of which 32 (91%) were carriers of MRSE. All 62 MRSE isolates had high levels of resistance to penicillin (90%) and cefoxitin (100%). Thirty-seven (60%) isolates carried SCCmec type IV, followed by 15 (24%) carrying SCCmec V, and 4 (6%) SCCmec II. Novel STs were assigned to four S. epidermidis isolates (ST832, ST833, ST834 and ST835). Conclusions: In this study, the majority of MRSE belonged to cluster II domain of CC2. The ST59-IV was a dominant clone among isolates recovered from hospital personnel. Determination of new MLST types confirmed the genetic diversity of these isolates. These observations highlight the need to review the infection control strategies to reduce the carriage of MRSE among hospital personnel.

A novel Mg(II) metal-organic framework (Mg-MOF) was synthesized based on the ligand of 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis confirmed that three-dimensional-nanostructure Mg-MOFs formed a monoclinic system with a channel size of 15.733 Å × 23.736 Å. N2 adsorption isotherm, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were performed to characterize the thermal stability and purity of the Mg-MOFs. The adsorption studies on four typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during wood drying showed that Mg-MOFs have noteworthy adsorption capacities, especially for benzene and β-pinene with adsorptions of 182.26 mg g−1 and 144.42 mg g−1, respectively. In addition, the adsorption of Mg-MOFs mainly occurred via natural adsorption, specifically, multi-layer physical adsorption, accompanied by chemical forces, which occurred in the pores where the VOCs molecules combined with active sites. As an adsorbent, Mg-MOFs exhibit versatile behaviour for toxic gas accumulation.

Essential oils (EOs) are one type of the most significant plant metabolites. Limited works have been conducted on EOs extracted from Cinnamomum reticulatum Hay (CREO), Leptospermum petersonii Bailey (LPEO), and Juniperus formosana Hayata (JFEO), which belong to the Lauraceae, Cupressaceae, and Myrtaceae families, respectively. The present work aimed to characterize and compare EOs chemical compositions of the three aromatic plant species and simultaneously evaluate their antioxidant activities. Using GC–MS/MS techniques, totally 135 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) belonging to nine chemical classes were detected, with 93, 102 and 116 VOCs from and 7, 8 and 16 VOCs unique to CREO, LPEO and JFEO, respecively, and 72 VOCs common to all the three EOs. The main compound identified both in LPEO and JFEO was (−)-bornyl acetate (20.23% and 28.40%, respectively), and the dominated compounds in CREO were L-α-terpineol (16.21%) and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,6-dimethyl-4-(1-methylethyl)naphthalene (11.68%), all accounting for more than 20% of their total contents. An in-depth dissection of major chemical compositions of the three EOs found that three VOCs were newly identified and biological functions of four VOCs were not yet reported previously. In addition, higher antioxidant capacities, measured with DPPH and ABTS assays, were exhibited in JFEO (IC50 8.37 ± 2.98 and 0.53 ± 3.80 mg/ml, respectively) and in LPEO (IC50 13.93 ± 2.11 and 1.32 ± 0.97 mg/ml) than in CREO (IC50 250.58 ± 1.48 and 4.81 ± 3.23 mg/ml), which may be due to CREO contained more esters and less aromatics than the other two EOs.

Background: Acne is a chronic disorder that affects almost 80% of adolescents and young adults, causing psychological and emotional distress. However, the current treatments for acne are either ineffective or have many side effects. This study was designed to confirm and objectively quantify the effect of a new non-drug combined therapy on acne.Methods: This study innovatively utilized ultrasound, which enhanced the absorption of aloe vera gel, and soft mask to make a purely physical method without any drugs. In both the treatment group and control group, the number of papules/pustules and the area of hyperpigmented lesions were counted, and a smart mirror intelligent face system was used before and after the combined therapy. Alterations in the skin functional index were recorded and analyzed statistically.Results: In the treatment group, the combined therapy significantly reduced the number of papules and the area of hyperpigmented lesions and improved skin roughness and local blood circulation. In the control group, there was no obvious improvement over 2 months.Conclusion: This study suggests that the new non-drug combined therapy significantly improved acne, which provided experimental evidence and treatment guidance for patients with mild to severe acne, especially patients with moderate acne. This new therapy may possibly be an appropriate method for patients who seek topical treatments with mild side effects and low antibiotic resistance rates.

High-order harmonic resonance is a key issue in the traction power supply systems (TPSS) of electric railways for safe operation. The effective evaluation of the resonance frequency is critical for taking measures to suppress harmonic resonance. In this paper, the influence of the distributed parameters of traction networks on resonance frequencies based on accurate calculation is proposed. The quantitative assessments of the distributed impedance and admittance are investigated. Furthermore, the theoretical calculation is directly verified using field tests at a high voltage level equal to 25 kV. The results show that the resonance frequencies of the TPSS are mainly affected by the distributed parameters, including the self-admittance and self-impedance of the contact wires, and the self-admittance of the positive feeders. In addition, the admittance connected in parallel has a greater effect than the series-connected impedance. The calculation method is also adapted to TPSS connected to renewable energy.

Biomass carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were widely used in bioimaging and WO2.72 has great potential in cancer therapy. The biomass CQDs were prepared by mixed acid oxidation method with biomass materials such as pods, tobacco leaves and cysteine as carbon sources. Properties of biomass carbon quantum dots were characterized, including micromorphology, the functional group composition, photoluminescence properties and fluorescence labeling ability in HepG2 cells. And the cytotoxicity of CQDs in HepG2 and MCF-7 cells was tested. In this paper, in situ loading of biomass CQDs on one dimensional long rod like WO2.72 (C-WO2.72) was synthesized by solvothermal method. Extensive studies suggested epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has significant neuroprotection against multiple central neural injuries, but the underlying mechanisms still remain poorly elucidated. Here we provide evidence to support the possible involvement of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase/ protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) pathways in EGCG-mediated protection against corticosterone-induced neuron injuries. As an essential stress hormone, corticosterone could induce obvious neurotoxicity in primary hippocampal neurons. Pre-treatment with EGCG ameliorated the corticosterone-induced neuronal injuries; however, it was blocked by pharmacological inhibitors for ERK1/2 (U0126) and PI3K/AKT (LY294002). Furthermore, the results confirmed that EGCG restored the corticosterone-induced decrease of ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT phosphorylation, and attenuated the corticosterone-induced reduction of peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) expression and ATP production. Taken together, these findings indicated that EGCG has significant neuroprotection against corticosterone-induced neuron injuries partly via restoring the ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways as well as the PGC-1α-mediated ATP production.

To establish 24-h urinary creatinine excretion reference ranges based on anthropometry in healthy Chinese children, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using twice-sampled 24-h urine and anthropometric variables. Age- and sex-specific 24-h creatinine excretion reference ranges (crude and related to individual anthropometric variables) were derived. During October 2013 and May 2014, urine samples were collected. Anthropometric variables were measured in the first survey. Data of 710 children (377 boys and 333 girls) aged 8-13 years who completed the study were analyzed. No significant difference was observed in 24-h urine volumes between the two samples (median [interquartile range): 855.0 [600.0-1272.0) mL vs. 900.0 [660.0-1220.0) mL, P = 0.277). The mean 24-h urine creatinine excretion was regarded as representative of absolute daily creatinine excretion in children. Sex-specific, body-weight-adjusted creatinine excretion reference values were 15.3 mg/kg/day (0.1353 mmol/kg/day) for boys and 14.3 mg/kg/day (0.1264 mmol/kg/day) for girls. Differences were significant between boys and girls within the same age group but not across different age groups within the same sex. Ideal 24-h creatinine excretion values for height were derived for potential determination of the creatinine height index. These data can serve as reference ranges to calculate ratios of analyte to creatinine. The creatinine height index can be used to assess somatic protein status.

As an ideal impact energy absorber, the external inversion process of thin-walled metal tubes over circular dies has been studied theoretically since 1960s. However, in the most existing theoretical models, the curvature in the deformation area is a constant and only the steady inversion force is studied. Limited research has been conducted on the whole inversion process. In this study, from experimental and numerical results, the curvature is found to be varying and the whole inversion process can be divided into two stages by three states. Then a modified geometric model is proposed and the force displacement curves is derived. Next, it has been observed that current theoretical results exhibit greater conformity with experimental and numerical results. Finally, the effects of the tube wall thickness, tube average radius and die radius on crashworthiness indicators are studied theoretically by the verified theoretical model. These outcomes offer valuable reference for further research on tube inversion forming and energy absorption characteristics of external inversion mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
