Abstract

We report the first detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) on germanium, measured at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Ge-Mini detector of the COHERENT collaboration employs large-mass, low-noise, high-purity germanium spectrometers, enabling excellent energy resolution, and an analysis threshold of 1.5 keV electron-equivalent ionization energy. We observe a on-beam excess of 20.6$_{+7.1}^{-6.3}$ counts with a total exposure of 10.22 GWhkg and we reject the no-CEvNS hypothesis with 3.9 sigma significance. The result agrees with the predicted standard model of particle physics signal rate within 2 sigma., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We consider the potential for a 10-kg undoped cryogenic CsI detector operating at the Spallation Neutron Source to measure coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and its sensitivity to discover new physics beyond the standard model. Through a combination of increased event rate, lower threshold, and good timing resolution, such a detector would significantly improve on past measurements. We considered tests of several beyond-the-standard-model scenarios such as neutrino non-standard interactions and accelerator-produced dark matter. This detector's performance was also studied for relevant questions in nuclear physics and neutrino astronomy, namely the weak charge distribution of CsI nuclei and detection of neutrinos from a core-collapse supernova.

Abstract

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino charged-current cross section on ${}^{127}$I with pion decay-at-rest neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy ($\leq$ 50 MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos of $9.2^{+2.1}_{-1.8} \times 10^{-40}$ cm$^2$. This corresponds to a value that is $\sim$41% lower than predicted using the MARLEY event generator with a measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution. In addition, the observed visible spectrum from charged-current scattering on $^{127}$I has been measured between 10 and 55 MeV, and the exclusive zero-neutron and one-or-more-neutron emission cross sections are measured to be $5.2^{+3.4}_{-3.1} \times 10^{-40}$ and $2.2^{+3.5}_{-2.2} \times 10^{-40}$ cm$^2$, respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Using neutrinos produced at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the COHERENT collaboration has studied the Pb($\nu_e$,X$n$) process with a lead neutrino-induced-neutron (NIN) detector. Data from this detector are fit jointly with previously collected COHERENT data on this process. A combined analysis of the two datasets yields a cross section that is $0.29^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$ times that predicted by the MARLEY event generator using experimentally-measured Gamow-Teller strength distributions, consistent with no NIN events at 1.8$\sigma$. This is the first inelastic neutrino-nucleus process COHERENT has studied, among several planned exploiting the high flux of low-energy neutrinos produced at the SNS., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, version accepted by Phys. Abstract

The COHERENT experiment located in Neutrino Alley at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has made the world's first two measurements of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS), on CsI and argon, using neutrinos produced at the SNS. The COHERENT collaboration continues to pursue CEvNS measurements on various targets as well as additional studies of inelastic neutrino-nucleus interactions, searches for accelerator-produced dark matter (DM) and physics beyond the Standard Model, using the uniquely high-quality and high-intensity neutrino source available at the SNS. This white paper describes primarily COHERENT's ongoing and near-future program at the SNS First Target Station (FTS). Abstract

We report on the technical design and expected performance of a 592 kg heavy-water-Cherenkov detector to measure the absolute neutrino flux from the pion-decay-at-rest neutrino source at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The detector will be located roughly 20 m from the SNS target and will measure the neutrino flux with better than 5% statistical uncertainty in 2 years. This heavy-water detector will serve as the first module of a two-module detector system to ultimately measure the neutrino flux to 2-3% at both the First Target Station and the planned Second Target Station of the SNS. This detector will significantly reduce a dominant systematic uncertainty for neutrino cross-section measurements at the SNS, increasing the sensitivity of searches for new physics., Comment: As accepted to JINST

9. Novel fusion protein-expressing lentiviral vectors ameliorate collagen induced arthritis

Abstract

Collagen induced arthritis (CIA) is a mouse model of autoimmunity that closely resembles human rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a debilitating disease with no cure. This study has been undertaken to generate antigen-specific tolerance to an autoantigen implicated in RA and immunodominant in animal models. Gene therapy protocols for RA that have gone to clinical trial have been designed to drive expression of therapeutic molecules at the site of inflammation, but not to modulate the immune response to key autoantigens. This study has shown that lentiviral vectors (lvv) expressing fusion proteins (FP-lvv) confer antigen-specific tolerance in CIA. Fusion proteins comprised of an endosomal-targeting domain coupled to the immunodominant CII259-273 peptide and an eGFP tag, were expressed in APCs. Confocal microscopy revealed substantial colocalisation with endosomes and lysosomes. Expression of the fusion proteins in APCs resulted in MHCII-presentation of the immunodominant CII259-273 peptide to CII259-273-reactive CD4+ T cell hybridomas. Furthermore, co-transduction with a lvv expressing the enzyme lysyl-hydroxylase 3 enhanced glycosylation of the expressed CII construct. Administering mice iv with FP-lvv one month prior to disease induction reduces by half the arthritic score during the first two weeks of clinical symptoms in CIA, providing partial but significant protection. The use of suitable controls showed that this effect is antigen-specific and measurements of α-CII IgG show a significantly lower titre in treated animals. This study provides evidence that lvv-mediated MHCII-presentation can be tolerogenic and hence, this approach could form an important part of future treatments for autoimmune diseases.

Abstract

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino charged-current cross section on ${}^{127}$I with neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy ($\leq 50$ MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos produced at a pion decay-at-rest source of $9.2^{+2.1}_{-1.8}\times10^{-40}$ cm$^2$. This corresponds to a value that is $\sim$41% lower than predicted using the MARLEY event generator with a measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution. In addition, the observed visible spectrum from charged-current scattering on ${}^{127}$I has been measured between 10 and 55 MeV, and the exclusive zero-neutron and one-or-more-neutron emission cross sections are measured to be $5.12_{-3.1}^{+3.4} \times 10^{-40}\mbox{ cm}^2$ and $2.2_{-0.5}^{+0.4} \times 10^{-40}\mbox{ cm}^2$, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The article focuses on the Upper Midwest Health Study initiated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to examine the risk of intracranial glioma in farm and rural residents in the United States. The population-based, case-control study evaluated the relationship between gliomas and rural and farm exposures among adults. Participants lived in non-metropolitan counties where the largest population center had fewer than 250,000 residents. Cases were diagnosed January 1, 1995 through January 31, 1997. Results show that moving to a farm as an adolescent was associated with greater risk of glioma.

Abstract

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has gained widespread acceptance for treatment of cholelithiasis. Because radiologists have a primary role in recognizing and treating complications of this surgical technique, we reviewed the clinical records and imaging studies of 29 patients with complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Complications included bile duct injuries (15 cases), retained common bile duct stones (seven cases), cystic duct stump leak (four cases), bowel perforation (two cases), abdominal abscess (two cases), intraperitoneal gallstones (2), and failure to diagnose malignant bile duct obstruction (one case). Twenty-two patients required reoperation, and one patient with bowel perforation died. Eleven of 15 bile duct injuries were imaged prior to hepaticojejunostomy. Nine of 11 were proximal bile duct injuries within 2 cm of the junction of the right and left bile ducts. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) identified the distal extent of injuries, but transhepatic cholangiography (THC) was necessary to fully evaluate the proximal extent of the bile duct abnormalities. ERC was used for diagnosis and treatment of the seven patients with choledocholithiasis. Abdominal films showed intraperitoneal in one patient with bowel perforation, intraperitoneal stones in a second patient, and intraabdominal abscess in one of two patients in whom abdominal films were performed. Computed tomography (CT), done in three patients with bowel perforation or abscess, showed the one duodenal perforation, and the two abscesses. CT also showed bilomas, intraperitoneal gallstones, and unsuspected malignancy. Imaging studies detected and defined complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in all cases. Abstract

Epidemiologic evidence on the relationship between selected industries and cancer is reviewed. This article will focus on several industries which have not been covered elsewhere in this volume, briefly describe current research on cancer in the agricultural and construction industries, and discuss surveillance data on cancer mortality in relation to industry listed on US death certificates. Employment in the rubber industry has been associated with bladder cancer, leukemia, stomach, and lung cancer and is considered by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to have 'sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans.' Studies of workers exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have reported excess mortality from gastrointestinal neoplasms, hematologic neoplasms, and skin cancer (specifically malignant melanoma); IARC considers that the evidence for carcinogenicity in humans is 'limited.' Employment in the boot and shoe industry has been associated with nasal adenocarcinomas in England and Italy ('sufficient'). Hairdressers and barbers have been found to have excess bladder cancer and less consistent evidence for several other sites ('limited'). Workers exposed to wood dust have excess mortality from cancer of the nasal sinuses and paranasal cavities; there is less consistent evidence for excess laryngeal cancer ('sufficient'). Workers employed in the petroleum industry have limited evidence for excess leukemia and other lymphatic and hematopoietic neoplasms, and skin cancer (particularly malignant melanoma) ('limited'). Abstract

This work examines how older pressure-solution seams become sheared or reactivated by slip because of movement on a younger fault segment. The reactivation then leads to the creation of secondary structures. These are followed by further changes in the local stress-strain field that result in slip reactivation on the secondary structures and in the creation of third-order structures. This sequence of deformation reflects and reveals transient changes in the stress-strain field along the margins of the fault during active slip on the fault. The reactivation may lead to enhanced rock permeability and/or porosity that allow for temporary periods of fluid movement. Thus, we believe that this serves as an important model to contribute to the understanding of movement of fluids such as oil and gas around active faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. The efficacy of random digit dialing in selecting matched controls for a case-control study of pediatric cancer.

Abstract

A study of random digit dialing as a method of control selection was conducted as part of a matched case-control study of risk factors for neuroblastoma. The study was conducted in 1981-1982 in the Greater Delaware Valley region. Participation involved parents submitting to a 2-4-hour telephone interview. Potential control telephone numbers were selected by substituting the last two digits of the case family's telephone number with randomly selected digits. Successive random telephone numbers were called until a family with a child matching the case by year of birth plus or minus three years and race who agreed to participate was identified. A total of 3,245 telephone numbers were dialed to select controls for 101 cases, an average of 32.1 telephone numbers per case. Among 1,908 residential households contacted, 25.5% refused to give information about household characteristics. Of households with known characteristics, 45% had children under 25 years of age and 14.9% had a child eligible for the study. Among 181 households invited to participate, 101 agreed. For 18.6% of all calls, residential respondents were randomly offered $10 as an inducement to participate. This inducement did not significantly influence participation rates among families invited to participate.
