The layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ has been shown to undergo a structural transition under pressure linked to an insulator-metal transition, with two incompatible models previously proposed for the highest-pressure structure. We present a study of the high-pressure crystal structures of FePS$_3$ using both single-crystal and powder x-ray diffraction. We show that the highest pressure transition involves a collapse of the inter-planar spacing of this material, along with an increase in symmetry from a monoclinic to a trigonal structure, to the exclusion of other models. The extent of this volume collapse is shown to be sensitive to the presence of a helium pressure medium in the sample environment, indicating that consideration of such experimental factors is important for understanding high-pressure behaviours in this material., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Covalency involving the 5f orbitals is regularly invoked to explain the reactivity, structure and spectroscopic properties of the actinides, but the ionic versus covalent nature of metal-ligand bonding in actinide complexes remains controversial. The tetrakis 2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide complexes of Th, U and Np form an isostructural series of crystal structures containing approximately tetrahedral MO4 cores. We show that up to 3 GPa the Th and U crystal structures show negative linear compressibility as the OMO angles distort. At 3 GPa the angles snap back to their original values, reverting to a tetrahedral geometry with an abrupt shortening of the M-O distances by up to 0.1 Å. The Np complex shows similar but smaller effects, transforming above 2.4 GPa. Electronic structure calculations associate the M-O bond shortening with a change in covalency resulting from increased contributions to the M-O bonding by the metal 6d and 5f orbitals, the combination promoting MO4 flexibility at little cost in energy.

14. Collaborative Research and Multi-Issue Movement Building for Educational Justice: Reflections on the Urban Research Based Action Network (URBAN)

- Abstract
Two long-time scholar-activists reflect on a distinctive approach to research that they call collaborative research for justice, research that is conducted with community leaders and education activists to advance equity and social justice. They argue that by linking research directly with action this kind of research has the power to speak directly to the current crises not only in education, but also in the other institutions of civil society. Drawing on decades of experience in public research universities, local community based organizations, inter/national disciplinary research organizations, and distributed informal networks of engaged scholars, social justice activists, and community leaders, they reflect specifically on the more recent formation of the Urban Research Based Action Network (URBAN), a national network of people enacting a variety of forms of collaborative research for justice, now with more than 1500 members. They outline lessons that might contribute to building the multi-issue movement for educational justice that they believe is required to transform public schools to make them serve the needs of the most disadvantaged, aggrieved, and inequitably treated communities. In its short history URBAN has already impacted the academy through the gatherings and meetings it has hosted as well as through a rigorous publishing agenda, including a special issue of EPAA in which this article appears.

Mechanistic-understanding-based selection of excipients may improve formulation development strategies for generic drug products and potentially accelerate their approval. Our study aimed at investigating the effects of molecular excipients present in orally administered FDA-approved drug products on the intestinal efflux transporter, BCRP (ABCG2), which plays a critical role in drug absorption with potential implications on drug safety and efficacy. We determined the interactions of 136 oral molecular excipients with BCRP in isolated membrane vesicles and identified 26 excipients as BCRP inhibitors with IC50 values less than 5 μM using 3H-cholecystokinin octapeptide (3H-CCK8). These BCRP inhibitors belonged to three functional categories of excipients: dyes, surfactants, and flavoring agents. Compared with noninhibitors, BCRP inhibitors had significantly higher molecular weights and SLogP values. The inhibitory effects of excipients identified in membrane vesicles were also evaluated in BCRP-overexpressing HEK293 cells at similar concentrations. Only 1 of the 26 inhibitors of BCRP identified in vesicles inhibited BCRP-mediated 3H-oxypurinol uptake by more than 50%, consistent with the notion that BCRP inhibition depends on transmembrane or intracellular availability of the inhibitors. Collectively, the results of this study provide new information on excipient selection during the development of drug products with active pharmaceutical ingredients that are BCRP substrates.

The quantum efficiencies (QE) of photocathodes consisting of bulk Nb substrates coated with thin films of Cs2Te are reported. Using the standard recipe for Cs2Te deposition developed for Mo substrates (220 {\AA} Te thickness), a QE ~11% - 13% at light wavelength of 248 nm is achieved for the Nb substrates, consistent with that found on Mo. Systematic reduction of the Te thickness for both Mo and Nb substrates reveals a surprisingly high residual QE ~ 6% for a Te layer as thin as 15 {\AA}. A phenomenological model based on the Spicer 3-Step model along with a solution of the Fresnel equations for reflectance, R, leads to a reasonable fit of the thickness dependence of QE and suggests that layers thinner than 15 {\AA} may still have a relatively high QE. Preliminary investigation suggests an increased operational lifetime as well. Such an ultra-thin, semiconducting Cs2Te layer may be expected to produce minimal ohmic losses for RF frequencies ~ 1 GHz. The result thus opens the door to the potential development of a Nb (or Nb3Sn) superconducting photocathode with relatively high QE and minimal RF impedance to be used in a superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) photoinjector., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

35. A Scalable Application of Artificial Intelligence-Driven Insulin Titration Program to Transform Type 2 Diabetes Management.

Background: Despite new pharmacotherapy, most patients with long-term type 2 diabetes are still hyperglycemic. This could have been solved by insulin with its unlimited potential efficacy, but its dynamic physiology demands frequent titrations which are overdemanding. This report provides a real-life account for a scalable transformation of diabetes care in a community-based endocrinology center by harnessing artificial intelligence-based autonomous insulin titration. Methods: The center embedded the d-Nav® technology and its dedicated clinical support. Reported outcomes include treatment efficacy/safety in the first 600 patients and use of cardiorenal-risk reduction pharmacotherapy. Findings: Patients used d-Nav for 8.2 ± 3.0 months with 82% retention. Age was 67.1 ± 11.5 years and duration of diabetes was 19.8 ± 11.0 years. During the last 3 years before d-Nav, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) had been overall higher than 8% and at the beginning of the program it was as high as 8.6% ± 2.1% with 29.3% of the patients with HbA1c >9%. With d-Nav, HbA1c decreased to 7.3% ± 1.2% with 5.7% of patients with HbA1c >9%. During the first 3 months, d-Nav reduced total daily dose of insulin in one of every five patients due to relatively low glucose levels to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia. Glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists or dual GLP-1 and Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonists were prescribed in about a half of the patients and sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor in a third. The frequency of hypoglycemia (<54 mg/dL) was 0.4 ± 0.6/month and severe hypoglycemia 1.7/100-patient-years. Interpretation: The use of d-Nav allowed for improvement in overall diabetes management with appropriate use of both insulin and noninsulin pharmacologic agents in a scalable way. Political philosophers rarely take on the topic of political corruption, despite the fact that corruption is so costly to human wellbeing, and so clearly separates well-governed from poorly governed polities. Ceva and Ferretti's book is the most complete attempt to remedy this deficit to date. Their key contribution is to conceptualize institutions in such a way that the offices they define link clearly to public ethics. Officeholders are accountable for their power mandate, not just within a hierarchy, but ethically, because their duties serve the public purposes that justify the institution. This said, their approach works best for impartial institutions in which the public duties of offices are clear and actionable, such as professional bureaucracies. We also need an ethically driven conception of political corruption for political institutions that contain and channel political partiality, especially democratic institutions within which the ethical purposes of public legislation are argued, deliberated, and voted. 37. 'Our Stories Are Powerful': The Use of Youth Storytelling in Policy Advocacy to Combat the School-to-Prison Pipeline

- Abstract
The use of narratives and storytelling has become an increasingly common strategy in grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts to influence policy change. Drawing on qualitative interviews and observations, Jeffrey Moyer, Mark Warren, and Andrew King present a case study of the successful campaign by Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE) to pass SB100, a progressive Illinois law aimed at ending the school-to-prison pipeline. The authors show that personal storytelling, when combined with other approaches, constitutes an effective strategy for youth organizing groups in low-income communities of color to achieve racial equity and educational justice policy goals. In this case, youth leaders involved in VOYCE told legislators their personal stories of the harm done to them and their friends by zero-tolerance school discipline and spoke to the racial inequities they faced. In doing so, they countered previously held narratives of youth of color as troublemakers and violence-prone and created a moral urgency for legislators to act. Youth leaders used storytelling and data to build a larger alliance of supporters, which contributed to the passage of a bill that limited harsh discipline, promoted restorative justice alternatives, and took steps to close racial gaps in suspensions and expulsions.
