“Brew bars”—bars and restaurants that include beer brewing facilities—are one of the elements associated with the rise of the craft beer industry. In some ways, these enterprises can be seen as an extension of the production process, whereby a retail outlet is attached to the brewery. The craft brewing credentials of the brewery are laid bare for consumers to see, smell, and sample. The production process, replete with vats, pipes, and instruments, is highly visible and closely juxtaposed with the point of consumption. Although breweries may be located in both rural and urban areas, brew bars are most frequently found as part of a diverse and highly competitive entertainment and hospitality sector in cities. This chapter draws on a study of brew bars in Wellington, New Zealand. It argues that, while these characteristics are present and several small local breweries do operate bars associated with the brewery, there are other instances where larger operators seem to have consciously constructed sites of consumption (bars), in which there is a visible performance of production. In particular, “corporate craft” operations reflect the differentiated and complex nature of the craft beer sector and the tensions toward concentration, which are unfolding although often well-hidden. This chapter suggests that the rise of “sights of production” evident in the craft beer sector of Wellington and elsewhere is part of a broader evolution of experiential “more-than-commodity” sectors that extend product life cycles and add competitive advantages.

The ‘field’ is an integral part of international education at the tertiary level. Students are taken to the field in order to experience, first hand, the themes, processes and people that they learn about in the classroom. Despite the critical importance of the fieldtrip mode of teaching and the positive impact it has on learning, budget constraints mean that fieldtrips are becoming less common in tertiary curricula, especially when they involve learning about international topics. One potential way to counteract this is to identify how we might construct a ‘virtual’ field. This article reflects on this process in general and presents two case studies that attempt to bring the field to the classroom.

Over recent decades, the demand for bottled water has grown exponentially at the global scale. In the marketing of such products, discourses of purity and paradise have often been invoked. Marketed as a ‘Taste of Paradise’, FIJI Water has gained enormous international success as an ostensibly clean and green product. Celebrity endorsements – reaching as high as US President Barack Obama – have abounded, driven in part by the belief that the corporation is both environmentally and socially responsible. This paper describes and analyses the rise of FIJI water and critically assesses the sources and impacts of its economic success. It goes on to explore its local social and environmental impacts in the context of a country that has been subject to waves of democratic crises where the fate of the polity has been influenced by FIJI Water's actions. FIJI Water has come to assume the role of development trustee in the villages most affected by the growth in exports. The democratic crises in Fiji has given FIJI Water profound developmental influence, and this has brought both costs and benefits at the local socio-environmental scale.

The authors bring together two theoretical and empirical strands in economic geography – established work on clusters and nascent research on ‘fictive place’ – in order to introduce the concept of ‘fictive clusters’. To explore this concept, they examine the New Zealand craft beer sector, which has evolved from non-existence since the year 2000. This growth has precipitated the rise of a dynamic and innovative cluster at the local scale in Wellington. The fictive cluster is explored through the Wellington case study, and the authors pose various questions for future work based on this discursive geographical device. This article coins the term ‘retroliberalism’ to describe the aid regime that has evolved out of the post-Global Financial Crisis (GFC) world order. This approach sees a partial return to the principles of classical liberalism with respect to the role of the state vis-à-vis the market, whilst also perpetuating a number of the principles of neoliberalism. At the same time, the rejuvenation of an active state harks back to modernization principles prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. In describing this regulatory shift we suggest that a retroliberal ‘manual’ for aid practice can be discerned. Our analysis utilizes evidence from recent reforms in a range of Western aid donors that are members of the United Nation’s DAC, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Netherlands. It also offers some comment on the increasing role and influence of non-traditional donors such as China in shaping the new regime. Ultimately, we argue that this state-led post-industrial modernization that serves to facilitate and sustain the accumulation of private capital harks back to the post-War development period.

Writing on a subject as all-encompassing as globalisation from ‘down here’ (Oceania) in a way that is relevant ‘up there’ (Anglo-America), while retaining the ‘Antipodean’ perspectives we seek to represent and embody, presents significant tensions. How does a textbook on globalisation written from our viewpoint negotiate the very system it aims to critique? We reflect on writing Geographies of globalization in the context of the fraught politics and challenging logistics of writing human geographies in New Zealand and the Antipodes generally.

RESUMEN Las ciudades en Chile han vivido una fase de expansión al inicio del presente siglo relacionada con actividades de exportación. Si bien un auge exportador puede producir efectos negativos sobre otros rubros, también genera importantes impulsos en las economías urbanas, debido a la demanda por servicios considerados no exportables o a través de la inversión de renta y el circuito secundario del capital. Contrastando de manera cuantitativa ciudades chilenas en auge y sin auge, se identifican diferentes explicaciones para las tendencias de empleo en tres rubros relevantes para la economía urbana. Así, en las ciudades en auge se observan importantes efectos positivos del empleo minero y de sus remuneraciones sobre el empleo en construcción y comercio. Por otro lado, en ciudades sin auge la minería pierde este rol protagónico, mientras que el gasto público y la industria no metálica, en parte procesando productos agrícolas, tienen importancia al explicar tendencias del empleo urbano. ABSTRACT During the beginning of the 21st century, cities in Chile have experienced a phase of rapid expansion regarding export activities. While a booming export sector may produce negative effects on other activities, there are also important impulses on urban economies, especially through the demand for “non-tradable” services, or through investment of excessive rents and the secondary circuit of capital. By contrasting booming and non-booming cities in Chile through a quantitative exercise, we identify different explanations for employment trends in three service sectors that are highly relevant for the urban economy. In booming cities there are important positive effects due to mining employment and revenues on employment in the construction and retail sectors. On the other hand, in the non-booming cities, mining loses its outstanding role, while public spending and the non-metal industry (including agricultural products processing) are more relevant to explain urban employment.

The Pacific Islands region covers a vast area of the globe yet it is often regarded as being marginalized in the global economy due to the small size, relative isolation and apparently limited resources of Pacific economies. This chapter examines processes of ‘de-marginalization’ that are being pursued by Pacific Island states and kinship networks. These relate to connections that are forged and strengthened with metropolitan economies that allow Pacific people to move, gain education and work elsewhere. In this we see the critical role of diasporic kinship networks operating often separate from and around the margins of state systems.

There has been a longstanding debate about the role of capital in agriculture. Most of this has taken place in the context of the so-called ‘agrarian question’. This discussion has often been overgeneralised and simplified the specific geographies of agrarian transformations. We argue this has arisen due to a failure to characterise and analyse the different forms of capital engaged in agricultural production and how they are articulated and assembled. It is the existence of this diversity of capital that partly explains the differentiated unfolding of the geographies of the agrarian transition that we witness empirically. This paper argues that we need to understand the nature of what we refer to as ‘congregations of capital’ and the articulations between their different forms if we are to better appreciate the way capital engages in agriculture, the ways it shapes labour relationships, and the ways it restructures agrarian economy and society. In order to do this, we use the example of the global wine industry with particular reference to the unfolding strategies used to attach capital to land evident in the New Zealand sector.

The Rugby World Cup, held in New Zealand in 2011, was a showcase for a rapidly globalising sport involving competition between twenty national teams, comprising over 600 players. This paper analyses the geography of the players’ team affiliations and reveals patterns of labour mobility that disrupt and render complex concepts and definitions of ‘national’ identity. We see that the dominance of professional rugby, particularly by European clubs, is concentrating player resources and revenue generation in ways that suggest an evolving core–periphery relationship. We suggest that the players themselves exercise agency by finding, manipulating and exploiting cracks and opportunities in the complex regulatory framework of the sport. We build a case for a research agenda that maps out these geographies of rugby and traces their implications for understandings of identity and the political economy of globalising sport.

The introduction of geographical indications in New Zealand has been slow and problematic. There has been some enthusiasm for tighter definition of regions in the way New Zealand agro-commodities are produced and marketed, yet also some apparent resistance. In this chapter we examine the reasons for this dichotomy with reference to the wine industry in particular. Despite some attempts at using and codifying geographical indications in the wine industry, the broader agricultural political economy is marked by a basic distinction between large-scale commodity production in a neoliberal trading environment—characteristic of the dominant dairy, wool and meat export industries—and the emergent moves towards small-scale niche high value-added production. The wine industry straddles this divide with both large-scale industrial production of Sauvignon Blanc by often global beverage companies—which really only appeals to broad spatial descriptors such as New Zealand and Marlborough—and a small-scale sector which seeks much tighter areal descriptors and trades off notions of place-based production, artisanal techniques and higher price points in the market. Given these tensions, it is yet to be seen what type of GI landscape will emerge in New Zealand following the imminent introduction and regulation of legislation.

Geographical studies of international aid have been scarce. In this article we make the case for geographies of aid, arguing not only that aid would be better understood if a geographical lens were applied, but also that many of the core questions and concepts that concern geographers could be approached and better understood through research on the geographies of aid. We consider that while the global politics of aid is well understood the way local, national and regional scale geographies interact with this is not. Ultimately, we posit that a geographical approach – pursued through a focus on scale, place, networks and space – would allow us to construct a new political agenda for aid that unites critical geographical concerns across the globe.
