Abstract

The intensity spectra recovered from the spectroscopic photographic plates were compared with the CCD spectra, and we found the difference between the two was 2.5%.The measurements were taken using a commercial flatbed scanner instead of a microdensitometer. The results indicate that the following two statements are inaccurate: (1) Correct measurement of spectroscopic plates requires a microdensitometer, and a commercial flatbed scanner is insufficient; (2) The spectrophotometric accuracy of spectroscopic plate is approximately 10% accurate. These results will encourage the creation and publication of a digital archive of spectroscopic plates. This paper presents the measurement of spectroscopic plates, the method of recovering intensity spectra from photographic density spectra, the results of comparison with CCD spectra, and discusses the causes of the high accuracy spectra obtained with a commercial flatbed scanner.

12. Cloud reflection modelling for impact flashes on Jupiter: A new constraint on the bulk properties of the impact objects

Abstract

We investigate optical characteristics of flashes caused by impacting meter- to decameter-sized outer solar system objects on Jupiter and contributions of reflected light from surface clouds at visible wavelengths to estimate more accurate bulk parameters such as the luminous energy of the flash, the kinetic energy, the mass, and the size of the impact object. Based on the results of recent reflectivity studies of the Jovian surface, we develop a cloud reflection model that calculates the contribution of the reflected light relative to that directly from the flash. We compare the apparent luminous energy of the previously reported flashes with the expected cloud reflection contributions to obtain their revised bulk parameters. We found that the cloud reflection contributions can be up to 200% of the flux directly from the flash and thus can be the most significant uncertainty in the measurement of the bulk parameters. The reflection contributions strongly depend on wavelength. With our cloud reflection correction, the revised bulk parameters of the previously reported flashes are obtained. Our cloud reflection correction provides a better understanding of the properties of impacting objects on Jupiter and is crucial for ongoing detailed investigations using high-sensitivity and multi-wavelength observation systems such as PONCOTS. Abstract

This article proposes a mobile quad-arm robot: ARMS, which unifies wheeled-legged tripedal locomotion, wheeled locomotion, and quad-arm loco-manipulation. ARMS's four arms have different mechanisms and are partially designed to be general-purpose arms for the hybrid locomotion and loco-manipulation. One three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) arm has an active wheel, which is used for wheeled-legged tripedal walking and wheeled driving with passive wheels attached to the torso. Two three-DOF general-purpose arms are series elastic and used for wheeled-legged tripedal walking, object grasping, and manipulation. The upper two-DOF arm is used for manipulation only; its position and orientation are determined by coordinating all arms. Each motor is controlled by an angle controller and trajectory modification with angle, angular velocity, angular acceleration, and torque constraints. ARMS was verified with seven experiments involving joint control, wheeled-legged locomotion, wheeled locomotion and grasping, slope locomotion, block terrain locomotion, carrying a bag, and outdoor locomotion.

20. Modelling the optical energy profile of the 2021 October Jupiter impact flash

Abstract

We have conducted numerical simulations to reproduce the observed optical energy profile of the 15 October 2021 (UT) impact flash on Jupiter, which was the largest and the most well-observed flash event detected by ground-based movie observations. The observed long-duration ($\sim 5.5~{\rm s}$) optical emission can be reproduced by an impact of an object with an exceptionally small angle of entry relative to the horizontal. The apparent lack of the impact debris feature despite the large impact object was possibly due to the shallower angle of entry ($\le 12^\circ$), which resulted in the lower ablation per unit volume at altitudes higher than $50 \, {\rm km}$, and the volume densities of the ablated materials were too low to allow the debris particulates to coagulate. The absence of temporal methane absorption change in the observed flash spectrum is consistent with the best-fit results. The model better fits the observed optical energy profile for weaker material (cometary and stony) cases than for metallic ones. Abstract

We report the results of video observations of tiny (diameter less than 100 m) near-Earth objects (NEOs) with Tomo-e Gozen on the Kiso 105 cm Schmidt telescope. A rotational period of a tiny asteroid reflects its dynamical history and physical properties since smaller objects are sensitive to the YORP effect. We carried out video observations of 60 tiny NEOs at 2 fps from 2018 to 2021 and successfully derived the rotational periods and axial ratios of 32 NEOs including 13 fast rotators with rotational periods less than 60 s. The fastest rotator found during our survey is 2020 HS7 with a rotational period of 2.99 s. We statistically confirmed that there is a certain number of tiny fast rotators in the NEO population, which have been missed with any previous surveys. We have discovered that the distribution of the tiny NEOs in a diameter and rotational period (D-P) diagram is truncated around a period of 10 s. The truncation with a flat-top shape is not explained well either by a realistic tensile strength of NEOs or suppression of YORP by meteoroid impacts. 29. Detection of an extremely large impact flash on Jupiter by high-cadence multiwavelength observations

Abstract

We report the detection of an optical impact flash on Jupiter on 15 October 2021 by a dedicated telescope, Planetary ObservatioN Camera for Optical Transient Surveys (PONCOTS), for the first time. Our temporally resolved three-band observations of the flash allowed investigations of its optical energy without the need for approximations on the impact brightness temperature. The kinetic energy of the impactor was equivalent to approximately two megatons of TNT, an order of magnitude greater than that of previously detected flashes on Jupiter and comparable with the Tunguska impact on Earth in 1908. This detection indicates that Tunguska-like impact events on Jupiter occur approximately once per year, two-three orders of magnitude more frequent than terrestrial impacts. The observed flash displayed a single-temperature blackbody spectrum with an effective temperature of approximately 8300 K without clear temporal variation, possibly representing common radiative features of terrestrial Tunguska-class superbolides., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, ApJL accepted

Abstract

Diffuse midline glioma (DMG) H3K27-altered is one of the most malignant childhood cancers. Radiation therapy remains the only effective treatment yet provides a 5-year survival rate of only 1%. Several clinical trials have attempted to enhance radiation antitumor activity using radiosensitizing agents, although none have been successful. Given this, there is a critical need for identifying effective therapeutics to enhance radiation sensitivity for the treatment of DMG. Using high-throughput radiosensitivity screening, we identified bromo- and extraterminal domain (BET) protein inhibitors as potent radiosensitizers in DMG cells. Genetic and pharmacologic inhibition of BET bromodomain activity reduced DMG cell proliferation and enhanced radiation-induced DNA damage by inhibiting DNA repair pathways. RNA-Seq and the CUT&RUN (cleavage under targets and release using nuclease) analysis showed that BET bromodomain inhibitors regulated the expression of DNA repair genes mediated by H3K27 acetylation at enhancers. BET bromodomain inhibitors enhanced DMG radiation response in patient-derived xenografts as well as genetically engineered mouse models.
