A superconducting magnet generating a magnetic force field of 1500 T(super 2)/ m in a 40 mm diameter room temperature bore is developed. In order to avoid huge axial magnetic forces between the main coils and the reverse coils, the main coils are combined with three sections set asymmetrically.

Claudin, a tight junction integral membrane protein and a family of proteins, forms the actual sealing element of the tight junction. There are more than 20 members of the claudin family with different tissue-specific expression and barrier functions. Thus, a family of claudin may be a target for modifying the absorption of drugs. Here, we examined whether modulation of claudin could be used to enhance drug absorption. In the current studies, we used a C-terminal fragment of Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (C-CPE) as a modulator of claudin-4. The absorption of dextran was assessed in an in situ loop assay in rats to evaluate the absorption-enhancing effects of C-CPE. Treatment with C-CPE dose-dependently enhanced the absorption of dextran (mol. wt. 4000). These effects were not accompanied by injury of the intestinal mucosa as assessed by leakage of lactose dehydrogenase and histological observation. C-CPE was over 400-fold more potent at enhancing dextran absorption than capric acid, a clinically used enhancer of absorption. C-CPE interacted directly with claudin-4, and C-CPE lacking a part the C terminus neither bound claudin-4 nor enhanced absorption in the rat jejunum. These results suggest that C-CPE enhances the absorption of dextran in rat jejunum, apparently through interactions with claudin-4, and this effect may represent an effective novel strategy for enhancing the absorption of drugs.

The spatial variation in reflectance such as the blood-vessel pattern can be observed in the image of cerebral cortex. This spatial variation is mainly caused by the difference in concentrations of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin in the tissue. We analyze the reflectance spectra obtained from multispectral images of pig cortex by principal component analysis to extract information that relates to physiological parameters such as the concentrations of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin and physical parameters such as mean optical path length. The light propagation in a model of exposed pig cortex is predicted by Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the interpretation of physiological and physical meanings of the principal components. The spatial variance of reflectance spectra of the pig cortex can be approximately described by the first principal component. The first principal component reflects the spectrum of hemoglobin in the cortical tissue multiplied by the mean optical path length. These results imply that the wavelength dependence of mean optical path length can be experimentally estimated from the first principal component of the reflectance spectra obtained from multispectral image of cortical tissue., (Copyright 2005 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers)

Immunohistochemical screening of the cat limbic system using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) revealed that MAb R2D5 specifically labeled a subset of layer 3 cells in the entorhinal cortex, while leaving layer 2 cells unlabeled. The apical dendrites of the R2D5-positive layer 3 cells tended to gather and formed columnar structures which penetrated layer 2 and climbed to the surface of entorhinal cortex.

A case of ventricular parasystole firing at the extremely rapid rate of 214 beats per minute in a 73 year old woman is described. Manifest cycle lengths of parasystolic complexes varied widely due to variable degrees of exit block, which could be best interpreted by the concept of multilevel block or alternating Wenckebach periodicity in the ventriculo-ectopic junction. Discontinuation of digoxin reduced the degree of exit block and unmasked parasystolic tachycardia.
