Groundwater poisoning by heavy metals has caused serious health hazards in the exposed population globally. Manganese (Mn) poisoning causing human health hazards is very meagerly reported worldwide. The present research elucidates for the first time the catastrophic effect of manganese causing cancer in the Gangetic plains of Bihar (India). The blood samples of n = 1146 cancer patients were voluntarily obtained for the study, after their consent. Their household water samples were also collected for the study. All the samples were analysed for Mn contamination by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The study indicates high Mn contamination in the cancer patient blood samples with highest content as 6022 µg/L. Moreover, the cancer patient's household handpump water samples also contained elevated Mn contamination. The correlation coefficient study finds significant association between Mn contamination in blood of cancer patients and their handpump water. The carcinoma group of cancer patients mostly in Stage III & IV had significant Mn contamination in their blood (above WHO/BIS permissible limit). The geospatial study depicts Mn contamination in handpump water in the state of Bihar in correlation with cancer patient's blood samples. This novel finding is being reported in India for the first time, which correlates cancer with handpump drinking water. The long-term Mn exposure could be one of the causative agents for elevating cancer incidences. Objectives: To evaluate the association between drinking water pollutants and non-syndromic birth defects., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis synthesis., Data Sources: A search of MEDLINE, EMBASE and Google Scholar was performed to review relevant citations reporting on birth defects in pregnancies exposed to water pollutants between January 1962 and April 2023., Eligibility Criteria: Prospective or retrospective cohort, population studies and case-control studies that provided data on exposure to drinking water pollutants around conception or during pregnancy and non-syndromic birth defects. We included studies published in the English language after the Minamata Bay disaster to reflect on contemporary concerns about the effect of environmental pollution and obstetric outcomes., Data Extraction and Synthesis: Two reviewers independently read the retrieved articles for content, data extraction and analysis. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Included studies were assessed for comparability when considered for meta-analysis., Results: 32 studies met inclusion criteria including 17 cohorts (6 389 097 participants) and 15 case-control studies (47 914 cases and 685 712 controls). The most common pollutants investigated were trihalomethanes (11 studies), arsenic (5 studies) and nitrates (4 studies). The studies varied in design with different estimates of exposure, different stages of gestation age and different durations of exposure to pollutants. 21 articles reported data on any birth defects in their population or study groups and the others on specific birth defects including congenital heart defects, neural tube defects, orofacial defects and hypospadias. An increased risk or higher incidence of overall birth defects was reported by 9 studies and for specific birth defects by 14 studies. Eight studies compared the risk or incidence of birth defects with exposure to different concentrations of the pollutants. The analysis showed an association between higher levels of trihalomethanes (TTMs) and arsenic increase in major birth defects (lower vs higher exposure (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.89; p<0.001 and OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.39 to 0.82; p<0.005, respectively)., Conclusion: The evidence of an association between exposure to average levels of common drinking water chemical pollutants during pregnancy and an increased risk or incidence of birth defects is uncertain. Available evidence indicates that some common chemical pollutants currently found in drinking water may have a direct teratogenic effect at high maternal exposure, however, wide variation in methodology limits the interpretation of the results. The presence of mineral pollutants, combined with bacterial contamination, has significantly impacted groundwater quality and led to various health-related issues in mining-impacted areas. Therefore, we measured the concentration of fluoride (F - ), phosphate (PO 4 3- ), sulphate (SO 4 2- ), ammonium (NH 4 + ), nitrate (NO 3 - ), the total coliforms (TCs), and physiochemical characteristics in groundwater samples of South Khorasan, Eastern Iran. For this, we collected water samples from 100 wells in spring and autumn across this mining-impacted area. We then measured the concentrations of mineral pollutants and assessed their associated health risks to children and adults using the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) models and spatiotemporal zoning maps in ArcGIS. The concentrations of PO 4 3- , NH 4 + , SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , and F - were 0.70 ± 0.34, 0.82 ± 0.9, 175.45 ± 123, 15.26 ± 9.41, and 0.53 ± 0.68 mg/L in spring, and 0.71 ± 3.18, 4.68 ± 31, 306.72 ± 615.80, 19.30 ± 15.61, and 0.72 ± 0.65 mg/L in autumn, respectively. PO 4 3- , NH 4 + , and SO 4 2- exceeded both the World Health Organization (WHO) and EPA, but NO 3 - exceeded only EPA standards. TCs in both seasons exceeded the standards set by the EPA and WHO. The hazard quotient (HQ) values indicated non-carcinogenic risks for F⁻ and NO 3 ⁻, while posing no risks NH 4 ⁺ and PO 4 3 ⁻ in both adults and children during autumn and spring.Hazard index (HI) was greater than 1 for all minerals in both children and adults in autumn and spring. No correlation was observed between mineral compounds and TCs in the study area, yet the water samples were highly contaminated by coliform with a significant risk to adults and children. Rivers in karst areas face increased risks from persistent growth in human activity that leads to changes in water chemistry and threatens the water environment. In this study, principal component analysis (PCA), ion ratio measurements, and other methods were used to study the water chemistry of the Qingshuijiang River Basin over the past 10 years. The results showed that the main ions in the river were Ca 2+ and HCO 3 - , with a cation order of Ca 2+ (mean: 0.93 mmol/L) > Mg 2+ (mean: 0.51 mmol/L) > Na + (mean: 0.30 mmol/L) > K + (mean: 0.06 mmol/L) and HCO 3 - (mean: 2.00 mmol/L) > SO 4 2- (mean: 0.49 mmol/L) > Cl - (mean: 0.15 mmol/L) > NO 3 - (mean: 0.096 mmol/L) > F - (mean : 0.012 mmol/L). In the past 10 years, the concentration of major ions in the river water in the basin has increased significantly. The weathering input of rock (mainly upstream carbonate) was the main source of Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and HCO 3 - , though sulfuric acid was also involved in this process. While K + and Na + were affected by the combination of human activity and the weathering input of silicate rock in the middle and lower reaches of the river, human activity was the main source of SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , and F - ions. Irrigation water quality and health risks were evaluated by calculating the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (Na%), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), and hazard quotient (HQ). The findings indicated that the river water was generally safe for irrigation and drinking, and the health risks were gradually reduced over time. Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution has emerged as the predominant water environment issue confronting plateau lakes in central Yunnan. Quantitative analysis of the impact of NPS pollution on water quality constitutes the key to preventing and controlling water pollution. However, currently, there is a dearth of research on identifying NPS pollution risks and exploring their relationship with water quality based on the Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) model in the plateau lake basins of central Yunnan. Particularly, studies on the spatial heterogeneity of the impact of NPS pollution on water quality from a multi-scale perspective are scarce. Therefore, this study focuses on three typical lake basins in the Central Yunnan Plateau-Fuxian Lake, Xingyun Lake, and Qilu Lake (the Three Lakes). Utilizing the MCR model to identify NPS pollution risks, the study analyzes seven different scales, including sub-basins, riparian buffer zones (100 m, 300 m, 500 m, 700 m, and 1,000 m) and lakeshore zones, to reveal the multi-scale effects of NPS pollution on water quality through correlation analysis. The results indicate that: (1) Over 60% of the areas in the Three Lakes Basin are at high or extremely high risk, mainly concentrated in flat terrain and around inflow rivers; (2) The area of NPS pollution from paddy field source landscape (PFSL) is greater than that from construction land source landscape (CLSL), and the high-risk areas of NPS pollution are also larger for PFSL compared to CLSL; (3) The mean resistance values of PFSL and CLSL show a significant negative correlation with monthly mean values of water quality indexes (NH 3 -N, TP, COD Cr ), with the 1,000 m riparian buffer zone scale showing the greatest correlation with most water quality indexes, especially NH 3 -N; (4) The correlation between the mean resistance value of CLSL and the monthly mean values of water quality indexes is significantly higher than that of PFSL, indicating a greater impact of CLSL on water quality compared to PFSL. In summary, PFSL and CLSL are the primary sources of NPS pollution in the Three Lakes Basins. The 1,000 m riparian buffer zone scale is the most sensitive to the impact of NPS pollution on water quality. Background: Between 1962 and 1975, a chlor-alkali plant in Canada discharged approximately 9 metric tons of mercury (Hg) into the Wabigoon River. Over the following decades, biomarkers of Hg exposure of persons from Grassy Narrows First Nation (Asubpeeschoseewagong Anishinabek), located downriver from the discharge, reflected Hg concentrations in fish. Hg exposure is known to target the calcarine fissure, resulting in visual field (VF) loss. Most studies and clinical reports focus solely on peripheral VF loss; little is known about the impact of Hg on the central and paracentral portions. The present study sought to characterize the patterns of VF loss with respect to past and current Hg., Methods: A 28-year hair-Hg (HHg) database, created from a 1970-97 government biomonitoring program, served to select study participants with ≥ 4 year-based HHg measurements (n = 81). Blood-Hg was assessed for current exposure. Light sensitivity thresholds across the VF were analyzed monocularly, using a Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA). Following post-hoc exclusions, based on HFA interpretation indices, 65 participants were retained. Both eyes were combined for analyses (n = 130 eyes). Unsupervised hierarchical clustering of HFA plot data was used to identify patterns of VF loss. A series of mixed effects models (MEM) were performed to test the associations for current Hg exposure with respect to HFA interpretation indices and clusters, as well as for longitudinal past Hg exposure., Results: The clustering approach decomposed the light sensitivity deficits into 5 concentric clusters, with greatest loss in the peripheral clusters. No relation was observed between any of the cluster scores and current blood-Hg. VF deficits increased with past Hg exposure. Longitudinal MEM showed that HHg was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with all peripheral, paracentral, and central cluster scores, as well as with HFA interpretation indices., Conclusions: Past Hg exposure in Grassy Narrows First Nation was associated with present day VF loss. The cluster-based location-specific approach identified patterns of VF loss associated with long-term Hg exposure, in both the peripheral and the central areas. Goodeinae is a subfamily of critically endangered fish native to central Mexico. Populations of Skiffia lermae , a species belonging to this subfamily, have significantly decreased in the past two decades. A previous study showed that S. lermae is sensitive to acute nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 -N) exposure, leading to noticeable changes in both behavioral and histopathological bioindicators. The aim herein was to determine the vulnerability of S. lermae to NO 3 -N exposure at realistic concentrations registered in freshwater ecosystems in central Mexico where the species was historically reported. Offspring of S. lermae were chronically exposed during 60 days to concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 mg NO 3 -N/L, with 2 mg NO 3 -N/L used as the reference value (control). Survival rate, feeding behavior, aquatic surface respiration, body growth, scaled mass index, immature red blood cells, as well as histopathological changes in branchial, hepatic and gonadal tissues were evaluated. Additionally, this study analyzed water quality in freshwater ecosystems where S. lermae presently persists. The results showed decreased survival as NO 3 -N concentration increased, as well as increased feeding latency, aquatic surface respiration and histological damage in the gills and liver. These organs showed differential sex-dependent responses to NO 3 -N exposure; females were more sensitive than males. In the ovaries, a decreased density of stage III oocytes was associated with increased NO 3 -N concentrations. No changes were observed in body growth and number of immature red blood cells. Concentrations recorded in the three freshwater ecosystems that S. lermae inhabit were below 2 mg NO 3 -N/L. Together, the results could explain why the species has disappeared from more contaminated freshwater ecosystems where NO 3 -N levels exceed 5 mg/L. Groundwater harbours unique species adapted to perpetual darkness. Groundwater fauna plays a crucial role in global ecosystem services, but contamination poses a threat to this keystone ecosystem. Diclofenac is a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug of particular concern, due to its presence in both surface and groundwater. We assess the environmental risk of diclofenac in European groundwaters using different scenarios, analyzing Measured Environmental Concentrations (MECs) of diclofenac and estimating the Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNECs) through two approaches: considering the sensitivity of the groundwater crustacean Proasellus lusitanicus (Isopoda: Asellidae), and using surface water species as proxies. Our results show that scenarios based on surrogate species predict that groundwater ecosystems are at risk due to diclofenac contamination. On the other hand, the MECs of diclofenac were consistently lower than the PNEC of P. lusitanicus, suggesting that the current MECs do not pose a significant threat to this groundwater-adapted species. However, risk scenarios differ considering the sensitivity of other groundwater species, emphasizing the importance of considering multiple species' sensitivities in risk assessment. Therefore, we recommend establishing an environmental quality standard for diclofenac in groundwater at 5 ng/L, a value that accounts the need for precautionary measures to safeguard groundwater ecosystems, essential for preserving their unique biota and services., (© 2024. Background: The use of chlorine to treat drinking water produces disinfection by-products (DBPs), which have been associated with congenital heart defects (CHDs) in some studies., Methods: Using National Birth Defects Prevention Study data, we linked geocoded residential addresses to public water supply measurement data for DBPs. Self-reported water consumption and filtration methods were used to estimate maternal ingestion of DBPs. We estimated adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals using logistic regression controlling for maternal age, education, body mass index (BMI), race/ethnicity, and study site to examine associations between CHDs and both household DBP level and estimated ingestion of DBPs., Results: Household DBP exposure was assessed for 2717 participants (1495 cases and 1222 controls). We observed a broad range of positive, null, and negative estimates across eight specific CHDs and two summary exposures (trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids) plus nine individual DBP species. Examining ingestion exposure among 2488 participants (1347 cases, 1141 controls) produced similarly inconsistent results., Conclusions: Assessing both household DBP level and estimated ingestion of DBPs, we did not find strong evidence of an association between CHDs and DBPs. Dysbiosis and acclimatization are two starkly opposing outcomes of altered holobiont associations in response to environmental pollution. This study assesses whether shifts in microbial taxonomic composition and functional profiles of the cosmopolitan sponge Hymeniacidon perlevis indicate dysbiotic or acclimatized responses to water pollution. To do so, sponge and water samples were collected in a semi-enclosed environment (San Antonio Bay, Patagonia, Argentina) from variably polluted sites ( i.e ., eutrophication, heavy metal contamination). We found significant differences in the microbiome of H. perlevis with respect to the pollution history of the sites. Several indicators suggested that acclimatization, rather than dysbiosis, explained the microbiome response to higher pollution: 1) the distinction of the sponge microbiome from the water microbiome; 2) low similarity between the sponge and water microbiomes at the most polluted site; 3) the change in microbiome composition between sponges from the different sites; 4) a high similarity in the microbiome among sponge individuals within sites; 5) a similar ratio of common sponge microbes to opportunistic microbes between sponges at the most and least polluted sites; and 6) a distinctive functional profile of the sponge microbiome at the most polluted site. This profile indicated a more expansive metabolic repertoire, including the degradation of pollutants and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, suggesting a relevant role of these microbial communities in the adaptation of the holobiont to organic pollution. Background: Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been linked to risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as increased inflammation, accelerated atherosclerosis, diabetes, and sex hormone dysregulation. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence suggesting associations between internal dose of PCBs and cardiovascular outcomes., Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate longitudinal associations of PCBs with coronary heart disease (CHD)-related outcomes in a cohort of Great Lakes sport fish consumers., Methods: The Great Lakes Sport Fish Consumer cohort was established in the early 1990's. Eight hundred nineteen participants were followed from 1993 to 2017. Serum PCBs were measured in 1994/1995 (baseline), in 2001, and in 2004, while health history questionnaires were administered in 1996, 2003, 2010, and 2017. Cox models were used to prospectively investigate associations of total PCBs and PCB groupings, based on aryl hydrocarbon receptor activity, with incident self-reported physician diagnosis of coronary heart disease (CHD), myocardial infarction (MI), and angina pectoris., Results: A 2-fold increase in phenobarbital-type PCBs was associated with a 72% increase in likelihood of self-reported incident diagnosis of CHD (HR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.06-2.81; p=0.0294). Similar results were observed for total PCBs (HR=1.68, 95% CI: 1.05-2.69; p=0.0306) and mixed methacholine/phenobarbital type (mixed-type) PCBs (HR=1.60, 95% CI: 1.02-2.52; p=0.0427), but not methacholine-type PCBs. PCBs were not strongly associated with risk of MI or angina., Conclusions: This study presents evidence that exposure to PCBs increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Plastics pose a considerable challenge to aquatic ecosystems because of their increasing global usage and non-biodegradable properties. Coastal plastic debris can persist in ecosystems; however, its effects on resident organisms remain unclear. A metagenomic analysis of the isopoda Ligia, collected from clean (Nae-do, ND) and plastic-contaminated sites (Maemul-do, MD) in South Korea, was conducted to clarify the effects of microplastic contamination on the gut microbiota. Ligia gut microbiota's total operational taxonomic units were higher in ND than in MD. Alpha diversity did not differ significantly between the two Ligia gut microbial communities collected from ND and MD, although richness (Observed species) was lower in MD than in ND. Proteobacteria (67.47%, ND; 57.30%, MD) and Bacteroidetes (13.63%, ND; 20.76%, MD) were the most abundant phyla found at both sites. Significant different genera in Ligia from EPS-polluted sites were observed. Functional gene analysis revealed that 19 plastic degradation-related genes, including those encoding hydrogenase, esterase, and carboxylesterase, were present in the gut microbes of Ligia from MD, indicating the potential role of the Ligia gut microbiota in plastic degradation. Leucine is an essential amino acid for fish. The ability of leucine to resist stress in fish has not been reported. Nitrite is a common pollutant in the aquatic environment. Therefore, we investigated the effects of dietary leucine on growth performance and nitrite-induced liver damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy, and apoptosis for sub-adult grass carp. A total of 450 grass carp (615.91 ± 1.15 g) were selected and randomly placed into 18 net cages. The leucine contents of the six diets were 2.91, 5.90, 8.92, 11.91, 14.93, and 17.92 g/kg, respectively. After a 9-week feeding trial, the nitrite exposure experiment was set up for 96 h. These results indicated that dietary leucine significantly promoted FW, WG, PWG, and SGR of sub-adult grass carp (P < 0.05). Appropriate levels of dietary leucine (11.91-17.92 g/kg) decreased the activities of serum parameters (glucose, cortisol, and methemoglobin contents, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, and lactate dehydrogenase), the contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) and peroxynitrite (ONOO - ). In addition, appropriate levels of dietary leucine (11.91-17.92 g/kg) increased the mRNA levels of mitochondrial biogenesis genes (PGC-1α, Nrf1/2, TFAM), fusion-related genes (Opa1, Mfn1/2) (P < 0.05), and decreased the mRNA levels of caspase 3, caspase 8, caspase 9, fission-related gene (Drp1), mitophagy-related genes (Pink1, Parkin) and autophagy-related genes (Beclin1, Ulk1, Atg5, Atg7, Atg12) (P < 0.05). Appropriate levels of dietary leucine (8.92-17.92 g/kg) also increased the protein levels of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), prostacyclin (p62) and decreased the protein levels of protein light chain 3 (LC3), E3 ubiquitin ligase (Parkin), and Cytochrome c (Cytc). Appropriate levels of leucine (8.92-17.92 g/kg) could promote growth performance and alleviate nitrite-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy, apoptosis for sub-adult grass carp. Difenoconazole (DFZ), classified as a "low-toxicity pesticide," has seen widespread application in recent years. Nevertheless, the non-target toxicity of the substance, particularly towards aquatic creatures, has generated considerable apprehension. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Ferulic Acid (FA) have attracted considerable study in this particular setting. This study established a chronic exposure model to DFZ and investigated the protective effects of FA on chronic respiratory inhibition leading to gill damage in freshwater carp. Histological analyses via HE staining indicated that FA effectively alleviated gill tissue damage induced by chronic DFZ exposure. The qRT-PCR results showed that the addition of FA reduced the expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α while boosting the expression of IL-10 and TGF-β1. Biochemical analyses and DHE staining revealed that FA reduced MDA levels and increased CAT and GSH activities, along with T-AOC, decreased ROS accumulation in response to chronic DFZ exposure. The results obtained from Western blotting analysis demonstrated that the addition of FA effectively suppressed the activation of the NF-κB signalling pathway and the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway in the gills subjected to prolonged exposure to DFZ. Background: Drinking water at U.S. Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, North Carolina was contaminated with trichloroethylene and other industrial solvents from 1953 to 1985., Methods: A cohort mortality study was conducted of Marines/Navy personnel who, between 1975 and 1985, began service and were stationed at Camp Lejeune (N = 159,128) or MCB Camp Pendleton, California (N = 168,406), and civilian workers employed at Camp Lejeune (N = 7,332) or Camp Pendleton (N = 6,677) between October 1972 and December 1985. Camp Pendleton's drinking water was not contaminated with industrial solvents. Mortality follow-up was between 1979 and 2018. Proportional hazards regression was used to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) comparing mortality rates between Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton cohorts. The ratio of upper and lower 95% confidence interval (CI) limits, or CIR, was used to evaluate the precision of aHRs. The study focused on underlying causes of death with aHRs ≥ 1.20 and CIRs ≤ 3., Results: Deaths among Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton Marines/Navy personnel totaled 19,250 and 21,134, respectively. Deaths among Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton civilian workers totaled 3,055 and 3,280, respectively. Compared to Camp Pendleton Marines/Navy personnel, Camp Lejeune had aHRs ≥ 1.20 with CIRs ≤ 3 for cancers of the kidney (aHR = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.95, 1.54), esophagus (aHR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.54) and female breast (aHR = 1.20, 95% CI: 0.73, 1.98). Causes of death with aHRs ≥ 1.20 and CIR > 3, included Parkinson disease, myelodysplastic syndrome and cancers of the testes, cervix and ovary. Compared to Camp Pendleton civilian workers, Camp Lejeune had aHRs ≥ 1.20 with CIRs ≤ 3 for chronic kidney disease (aHR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.13, 3.11) and Parkinson disease (aHR = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.72, 2.04). Female breast cancer had an aHR of 1.19 (95% CI: 0.76, 1.88), and aHRs ≥ 1.20 with CIRs > 3 were observed for kidney and pharyngeal cancers, melanoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and chronic myeloid leukemia. Importance: The consequences of low levels of environmental lead exposure, as found commonly in US household water, have not been established., Objective: To examine whether commonly encountered levels of lead in household water are associated with hematologic toxicity among individuals with advanced kidney disease, a group known to have disproportionate susceptibility to environmental toxicants., Design, Setting, and Participants: Cross-sectional analysis of household water lead concentrations and hematologic outcomes was performed among patients beginning dialysis at a Fresenius Medical Care outpatient facility between January 1, 2017, and December 20, 2021. Data analysis was performed from April 1 to August 15, 2023., Exposure: Concentrations of lead in household water were examined in categorical proportions of the Environmental Protection Agency's allowable threshold (15 μg/L) and continuously., Main Outcomes and Measures: Hematologic toxic effects were defined by monthly erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) dosing during the first 90 days of incident kidney failure care and examined as 3 primary outcomes: a proportion receiving maximum or higher dosing, continuously, and by a resistance index that normalized to body weight and hemoglobin concentrations. Secondarily, hemoglobin concentrations for patients with data prior to kidney failure onset were examined, overall and among those with concurrent iron deficiency, thought to increase gastrointestinal absorption of ingested lead., Results: Among 6404 patients with incident kidney failure (male, 4182 [65%]; mean [SD] age, 57 [14] years) followed up for the first 90 days of dialysis therapy, 12% (n = 742) had measurable lead in household drinking water. A higher category of household lead contamination was associated with 15% (odds ratio [OR], 1.15 [95% CI, 1.04-1.27]) higher risk of maximum monthly ESA dosing, 4.5 (95% CI, 0.8-8.2) μg higher monthly ESA dose, and a 0.48% (95% CI, 0.002%-0.96%) higher monthly resistance index. Among patients with pre-kidney failure hemoglobin measures (n = 2648), a higher household lead categorization was associated with a 0.12 (95% CI, -0.23 to -0.002) g/dL lower hemoglobin concentration, particularly among those with concurrent iron deficiency (multiplicative interaction, P = .07), among whom hemoglobin concentrations were 0.25 (95% CI, -0.47 to -0.04) g/dL lower., Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that levels of lead found commonly in US drinking water may be associated with lead poisoning among susceptible individuals.

Water pollution exerts a negative impact on the health of both women and men, inducing hormonal changes, accelerating aging, and consequently leading to the premature onset of age-related health problems. Water pollutants can in general be classified as chemical (both organic and inorganic), physical, and biological agents. Certain chemical pollutants have been found to disrupt hormonal balance by blocking, mimicking, or disrupting functions within the intricate homeostasis of the human body. Moreover, certain water pollutants, including specific pesticides and industrial chemicals, have been associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as mood swings, depression, cognitive decline, and anxiety, impacting both women and men. Water pollution is also associated with physical ailments, such as diarrhea, skin diseases, malnutrition, and cancer. Exposure to specific pollutants may promote premature menopause and vasomotor symptoms, elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease, and reduce bone density. In men, exposure to water pollution has been shown to reduce LH, FSH, and testosterone serum levels. The oxidative stress induced by pollutants prompts apoptosis of Sertoli and germ cells, inhibiting spermatogenesis and altering the normal morphology and concentration of sperm. Environmental estrogens further contribute to reduced sperm counts, reproductive system disruptions, and the feminization of male traits. Studies affirm that men generally exhibit a lower susceptibility than women to hormonal changes and health issues attributed to water pollutants. This discrepancy may be attributed to the varied water-related activities which have traditionally been undertaken by women, as well as differences in immune responses between genders. The implementation of effective measures to control water pollution and interventions aimed at safeguarding and enhancing the well-being of the aging population is imperative. The pervasive utilization of plastics and their integration into ecosystems has resulted in significant environmental issues, particularly the pollution of microplastics (MPs). In aquaculture, high-fat feed (HFD) is frequently employed to enhance the energy intake and economic fish production. This study utilized zebrafish as a model organism to investigate the impact of concurrent exposure to HFD and MPs on fish intestinal pathology damage and intestinal microbiome. The experimental design involved the division of zebrafish into two groups: one receiving a normal diet (ND) and the other receiving HFD. The zebrafish were exposed to a control group, as well as polystyrene (PS) MPs of varying sizes (5 and 50 μm). Histopathological examination revealed that the combination of 5 μm MPs and HFD resulted in the most significant damage to the zebrafish intestinal tract. Furthermore, gut microbiome assays indicated that exposure to MPs and HFD altered the composition of the gut microbiome. This study demonstrates that in aquaculture, the issue of HFD must be considered alongside concerns about MPs contamination, as both factors appear to have a combined effect on the intestinal pathology damage and intestinal microbiome. Background: Associations between maternal periconceptional exposure to disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water and neural tube defects (NTDs) in offspring are inconclusive, limited in part by exposure misclassification., Methods: Maternal interview reports of drinking water sources and consumption from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study were linked with DBP concentrations in public water system monitoring data for case children with an NTD and control children delivered during 2000-2005. DBPs analyzed were total trihalomethanes, the five most common haloacetic acids combined, and individual species. Associations were estimated for all NTDs combined and selected subtypes (spina bifida, anencephaly) with maternal periconceptional exposure to DBPs in public water systems and with average daily periconceptional ingestion of DBPs accounting for individual-level consumption and filtration information. Mixed effects logistic regression models with maternal race/ethnicity and educational attainment at delivery as fixed effects and study site as a random intercept were applied., Results: Overall, 111 case and 649 control children were eligible for analyses. Adjusted odds ratios for maternal exposure to DBPs in public water systems ranged from 0.8-1.5 for all NTDs combined, 0.6-2.0 for spina bifida, and 0.7-1.9 for anencephaly; respective ranges for average daily maternal ingestion of DBPs were 0.7-1.1, 0.5-1.5, and 0.6-1.8. Exposure to pollutants is a potentially crucial but overlooked driver of population declines in shorebirds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. We combined knowledge of moult strategy and life history with a standardised sampling protocol to assess mercury (Hg) contamination in 984 individuals across 33 migratory shorebird species on an intercontinental scale. Over one-third of the samples exceeded toxicity benchmarks. Feather Hg was best explained by moulting region, while habitat preference (coastal obligate vs. non-coastal obligate), the proportion of invertebrates in the diet and foraging stratum (foraging mostly on the surface vs. at depth) also contributed, but were less pronounced. Feather Hg was substantially higher in South China (Mai Po and Leizhou), Australia and the Yellow Sea than in temperate and Arctic breeding ranges. Non-coastal obligate species (Tringa genus) frequently encountered in freshwater habitats were at the highest risk. This study is the first to determine the levels of heavy metals in commercially important fish species, namely Lates niloticus and Oreochromis niloticus and the potential human health risks associated with their consumption. A total of 120 fish samples were collected from the lower Omo river and Omo delta, with 60 samples from each water source. The fish tissue samples (liver and muscle) were analyzed using a flame atomic absorption spectrometer for nine heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The human health risk assessment tools used were the target hazard quotient (THQ), the hazard index (HI), and the target cancer risk (TCR). The mean levels of heavy metals detected in the liver and muscle of L. niloticus from the lower Omo river generally occurred in the order Fe > Zn > Pb> Cu > Mn> Cr > Co > Ni and Pb > Cu > Mn > Co > Ni, respectively. The mean levels of metals in the muscle and liver tissues of O. niloticus were in the order Fe > Pb > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Co > Ni and Pb > Zn > Mn > Fe > Cu > Co > Ni, respectively. Similarly, the mean levels of heavy metals detected in the liver and muscle of L. niloticus from Omo delta occurred in the order Fe > Zn > Pb > Cu > Mn > Cr > Co > Ni and Fe > Pb > Zn > Mn > Cu > Co > Cr > Ni, respectively. The mean levels in the muscle and liver tissues of O. niloticus from the Omo delta were in the order Fe > Pb > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Co > Ni and Pb > Fe > Zn > Mn > Co > Cu > Ni, respectively. The study revealed that the THQ values were below 1, indicating that consumption of L. niloticus and O. niloticus from the studied sites does not pose a potential non-carcinogenic health risk. Although the TCR values for Pb in this study were within the tolerable range, it's mean concentration in the muscle and liver tissues of both fish species from the two water bodies exceeded the permissible limit established by FAO/WHO. This is a warning sign for early intervention, and it emphasizes the need for regular monitoring of freshwater fish. Polystyrene microplastics, extensively considered endocrine disrupting chemicals, disturb the reproductive system of living organisms. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the reproductive endocrinopathy, is longstanding concern due to its eternal impacts as reproductive disorder and infertility. Despite several reports in reproductive and endocrine toxicity, there is inadequate literature regarding the daily intake of polystyrene-microplastics via drinking water in causing PCOS and leading to ovarian fibrosis in long-term. The present study investigated whether daily consumption of polystyrene-microplastics at doses equivalent to human exposure can cause PCOS and progress to ovarian fibrosis, using female zebrafish as model. Resembling letrozole-PCOS zebrafish model, daily intake of polystyrene-microplastics displayed hallmark PCOS pathophysiology; like excess body weight and %Gonadosomatic index, decreased Follicle Stimulating Hormone and β-estradiol, increased Luteinising Hormone, brain and ovarian Testosterone (39.3% and 75% respectively). Correspondingly, ovarian histology revealed more developing (stage I and II) oocytes and less mature oocytes alongwith cystic lesions; like follicular membrane disorganization, zona pellucida invagination, theca hypertrophy, basophilic granular accumulation and oocyte buddings. Lipid deposition in intestinal and ovarian tissues was evidenced and increased fasting blood glucose manifesting insulin resistance. The expression of PCOS biomarkers (tox3, dennd1a, fem1a) was significantly disturbed. Polystyrene microplastics played vital role in inducing PCOS further enhancing oxidative stress, which positively influences inflammation and aggravate ovarian mitophagy, shedding light on its ability to harshen PCOS into ovarian fibrosis, which is characterized by collagen deposition and upregulation of pro-fibrogenic biomarker genes. Long-term exposure to arsenic can lead to functional damage to many organs and can be life-threatening. It is of great significance to analyze the distribution characteristics of arsenic in water and evaluate its potential risk for preventing and controlling human health hazards caused by water-derived arsenic. Based on the published data from 2000 to 2022, the geographical distribution characteristics of arsenic in drinking water across China were systematically analyzed in detail, and the health risk of arsenic in drinking water was quantitatively assessed using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), which represent the burden of disease. The results showed that the average concentration of arsenic in drinking water in China was (2.88 ±0.33) μg·L -1 , which was lower than the limit of 10 μg·L -1 set by the standard for drinking water quality (GB 5749-2022). Nevertheless, the arsenic in drinking water in some provinces, including Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Ningxia, was still higher than the limit. The arsenic concentration in drinking water in northern China was higher than that in southern China, and that in rural areas was higher than that in cities. The estimated health risk of arsenic in drinking water (1.63×10 -6 DALYs per person-year) was higher than the acceptable risk level of waterborne exposure of 1.0×10 -6 DALYs per person-year set by the World Health Organization. The personal health risks related to arsenic in drinking water in the six geographical regions were ranked as follows:North China &gt; Northeast China &gt; Central South China &gt; Northwest China &gt; Southwest China &gt; East China. Almost all (99.4%) of the health burden associated with water arsenic was attributable to skin and lung cancer, which caused 2 905.25 and 1 513.96 DALYs per year, respectively. Most (78.0%) of the health burden was borne by people aged 45 years or older. In addition, given the proportion of each age group in the total population, older persons over the age of 60 bear a higher drinking-water-associated arsenic burden at the individual level than others, and attention should be consequently paid to them when controlling the risk of arsenic in water.

Phenol, known for its bioaccumulative nature and severe toxicity to riverine organisms, poses complex challenges for ecological risk assessment. To tackle this issue, we developed a three-stage incremental assessment method, providing an integrated perspective on phenol toxicity risk for aquatic organisms. The findings indicated that phenol concentrations were generally higher in the aquatic environments of northern rivers, such as the Hun River, Taizi River, and Liao River, compared to those in southern China. The evaluation results at individual points showed that the ecological risk of phenol to aquatic organisms ranked from high to low during rainy, dry, and normal seasons, showing seasonal variation characteristics. Regarding spatial variation along the river, the ecological risk of phenol gradually increased from upper reaches, peaked in the middle reaches, and then decreased in the lower reaches. Considering the different species types, fish face a higher risk of toxic effects of phenol than invertebrates when exposed to phenol over a long period of time, probably due to the bioaccumulative nature of phenol. To address ecological risk control at the watershed scale, there is an urgent need to revise China's current river water quality standards. It is essential to increase the emphasis on ecological risk control for aquatic organisms. Antibiotics are emerging pollutants that have detrimental effects on both target and non-target organisms in the environment. However, current methods for environmental risk assessment primarily focus on the risk to non-target organisms in ecosystems, overlooking a crucial risk of antibiotics - the induction of resistance in targeted bacteria. To address this oversight, we have incorporated resistance (R) risk with persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity (PBT) to establish a more comprehensive PBTR (persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, and resistance) framework for antibiotic-specific risk assessment. Using the PBTR framework, we evaluated 74 antibiotics detected in Chinese seawater from 2000 to 2021, and identified priority antibiotics. Our analysis revealed that the priority antibiotics with R risk accounted for the largest proportion (50% to 70%), followed by P risk (40% to 58%), T risk (16% to 35%) and B risk (0 to 13%). To further categorize these priority antibiotics, we assigned them a risk level according to their fulfillment of criteria related to P, B, T, and R. Antibiotics meeting all four indicators were classified as Grade I, representing the highest risk level. Grade II and Grade III were assigned to antibiotics meeting three or two indicators, respectively. Antibiotics meeting only one indicator were classified as Grade IV, representing the lowest risk level. The majority of priority antibiotics fell into Grade IV, indicating low risk (55% to 79%), followed by Grade III (16% to 45%). The highest risk antibiotic identified in this study was clindamycin (CLIN), categorized as Grade II, in the East China Sea. Our findings aligned with previous studies for 25 antibiotics, affirming the validity of the PBTR framework. Moreover, we identified 13 new priority antibiotics, highlighting the advancement of this approach. Background: Arsenic in drinking water is a global public health concern. This study aims to investigate the association between chronic low-level exposure to arsenic in drinking water and health outcomes in the volcanic area of Mt. Amiata in Italy, using a residential cohort study design., Methods: Chronic exposure to arsenic in drinking water was evaluated using monitoring data collected by the water supplier. A time-weighted average arsenic exposure was estimated for the period 2005-2010. The population-based cohort included people living in five municipalities in the Mt. Amiata area between 01/01/1998 and 31/12/2019. Residence addresses were georeferenced and each subject was matched with arsenic exposure and socio-economic status. Mortality and hospital discharge data were selected from administrative health databases. Cox proportional hazard models were used to test the associations between arsenic exposure and outcomes, with age as the temporal axis and adjusting for gender, socio-economic status and calendar period., Results: The residential cohort was composed of 30,910 subjects for a total of 407,213 person-years. Analyses reported risk increases associated with exposure to arsenic concentrations in drinking water > 10 µg/l for non-accidental mortality (HR = 1.07 95%CI:1.01-1.13) and malignant neoplasms in women (HR = 1.14 95%CI:0.97-1.35). Long-term exposure to arsenic concentrations > 10 µg/l resulted positively associated with several hospitalization outcomes: non-accidental causes (HR = 1.06 95%CI:1.03-1.09), malignant neoplasms (HR = 1.10 95%CI:1.02-1.19), lung cancer (HR = 1.85 95%CI:1.14-3.02) and breast cancer (HR = 1.23 95%CI:0.99-1.51), endocrine disorders (HR = 1.13 95%CI:1.02-1.26), cardiovascular (HR = 1.12 95%CI:1.06-1.18) and respiratory diseases (HR = 1.10 95%CI:1.03-1.18). Some risk excesses were also observed for an exposure to arsenic levels below the regulatory standard, with evidence of exposure-related trends., Conclusions: Our population-based cohort study in the volcanic area of Mt. Amiata showed that chronic exposure to arsenic concentrations in drinking water above the current regulatory limit was associated with a plurality of outcomes, in terms of both mortality and hospitalization. The recent lead-in-water crisis in Newark has renewed concerns about the crisis being a widespread problem in the nation. Using data on the exact home addresses of pregnant women residing in the city combined with information on the spatial boundary separating areas within the city serviced by two water treatment plants, we exploit an exogenous change in water chemistry that resulted in lead leaching into the tap water of one plant's service area, but not the other's, to identify a causal effect of prenatal lead exposure on fetal health. We find robust evidence of adverse health impacts, which has important policy implications in light of the substantial number of lead water pipes that remain in use as part of our aging infrastructure and the cost-benefit calculus of lead abatement interventions., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Heavy metal contamination in coastal waters may pose a serious threat to aquatic products and human health. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of the pollution-induced by heavy metals in Haikou Bay and adjacent seas and assessed the potential ecological risk. The spatial distributions of heavy metals including Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Hg, and As were analyzed in the surface and bottom water, surface sediment, and five species of fish collected from Haikou Bay and adjacent seas. For seawater, the results showed that the horizontal distribution of the seven heavy metal elements in the study area had no uniform pattern due to the influence of complex factors, such as land-based runoff, port shipping, and ocean current movement. In contrast, the vertical distribution of these heavy metal elements, except for Zn and Cd, showed high concentrations in the surface water and low concentrations in the bottom water. Due to the symbiotic relationship between Zn and Cd, the distributions of these two elements were similar in the study areas. Different from the complex distribution of heavy metals in water, the highest concentrations of these elements in surface sediment all occurred at station 11 except for Pb. Our study revealed that organic carbon and sulfide are important factors affecting the heavy metal concentrations in the surface sediments. Heavy metals in waters and surface sediment were lower than the quality standard of class I according to the China National Standard for Seawater Quality and the sediment quality, except for Zn in water, suggesting that the seawater and surface sediment in Haikou Bay and adjacent seas has not been polluted by heavy metals. Additionally, the heavy metal As was the main element affecting the quality of fish in this study area, and attention should be paid in the future. The target hazard quotient (THQ) values of seven heavy metal elements in fish were all lower than 1.0, indicating that eating fish in this area will not pose a risk to human health. These results provide valuable information for further understanding the status of heavy metal pollution in Haikou Bay and adjacent seas and the development of targeted conversation measures for the environment and fish consumers.

Sugarcane crops are dependent on chemicals for maintaining plantations. Therefore, environmental consequences concern adjacent areas that can be affected by contaminants in common use, including pesticides and vinasse (i.e., a by-product from the ethanol industry). This study aimed to evaluate phytotoxicity through two plant bioassays with water from mesocosms contaminated with the herbicide 2,4-D (447.0 μg L -1 ), the insecticide fipronil (63.5 μg L -1 ), and sugarcane vinasse (1.3%). First, the germination test (4 d) with Eruca sativa L. assessed water samples collected three times after the contamination (2 h, 14 d, and 30 d), considering germination, shoot, and root growth. The results from this bioassay indicated higher phytotoxicity for 2,4-D as it fully inhibited the shoot and root growth even in low concentrations (0.2 μg L -1 ). However, no significant effect was reported for fipronil and vinasse. Also, the 2,4-D effects drastically decreased due to an expressive concentration reduction (99.4% after 30 d in mixture with vinasse). Second, the irrigation test with Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Zea mays L. considered shoot and root growth and biomass under 21 days after plants emergence. The herbicide 2,4-D inhibited the initial growth of tested species, especially the roots (up to 45% inhibition). Furthermore, sugarcane vinasse caused harmful effects on plant growth (up to 31% inhibition). Therefore, our data showed that these contaminants could inhibit plant germination and initial growth under our tested conditions. In aquatic organisms, cadmium exposure occurs from ovum to death and the route of absorption is particularly wide, being represented by skin, gills and gastrointestinal tract, through which contaminated water and/or preys are ingested. It is known that cadmium interferes with the gut; however, less information is available on cadmium effects on an important component of the gut, namely goblet cells, specialized in mucus synthesis. In the present work, we studied the effects of two sublethal cadmium concentrations on the gut mucosa of Danio rerio . Particular attention was paid to changes in the distribution of glycan residues, and in metallothionein expression in intestinal cells. The results show that cadmium interferes with gut mucosa and goblet cells features. The effects are dose- and site-dependent, the anterior gut being more markedly affected than the midgut. Cadmium modifies the presence and/or distribution of glycans in the brush border and cytoplasm of enterocytes and in the goblet cells' cytoplasm and alters the metallothionein expression and localization. The results suggest a significant interference of cadmium with mucosal efficiency, representing a health risk for the organism in direct contact with contamination and indirectly for the trophic chain.

Intestinal injury assessment of hexavalent chromium (Cr-VI) in humans is crucial for quantifying assessment of adverse health risk posed by the intake of Cr (VI)-contaminated water. To overcome the deficiency in simulating human gastric reduction and intestinal absorption, we modified the constituents of simulated gastric fluid in in vitro digestion method by adding reductants glutathione (18 μM) and ascorbic acid (180 μM), which incorporated with human intestinal epithelial model to construct an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (IVGD) model for intestinal injury assessment. Cr-VI bioaccessibility results from IVGD model showed that weak gastric acidity significantly increased the intestinal accessible Cr-VI dose by 22.41-38.43 folds. The time-course intestinal absorption indicated prolongation of intestinal exposure destroyed the intestinal epithelium, and 24 h after Cr-VI treatment was a good time point to perform intestinal absorption and toxicity assessment. A series of cell-based bioassays provided initial warning of adverse effect, suggesting that epithelial integrity exhibited greatest sensitivity to Cr-VI exposure and might be used as a sensitive marker for the toxicity assessment of oral exposure to Cr-VI. Notably, this study provides a feasible strategy for delineation of Cr-VI biotransformation and intestinal injury following ingestion exposure, which contributes to address the toxicity data gap of low-dose exposure in humans and puts forward a reference for intestinal toxicity assessment of other chemicals., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. We tested concentration-dependence of selected gene transcripts (cat, gst, hsp70, hsp90, mt and sod) for evaluation as biomarkers of chemical stress. Contrary to the common approach of factorial designs and few exposure concentrations, we used regression across a high-resolution concentration series. Specifically, freshwater mussels (Anodonta anatina) were acutely (96 h) exposed to Cu (13 nominal concentrations, measuring 0.13-1 600 µg/L), and transcripts were measured by RT-qPCR. In digestive glands, cat, hsp90 and mt decreased with water Cu (p < 0.05), but response magnitudes saturated at < 2-fold decreases. In gills, gst, hsp70, hsp90 and mt increased with water Cu (p < 0.05). While hsp70, hsp90 and mt exceeded 2-fold increases within the exposure range, high Cu concentrations were required (38-160 µg/L). Although gill responses were generally more robust compared to digestive glands, overall small response magnitudes and moderate sensitivity may set limit for potential application as general biomarkers of chemical stress., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Investigations of encounters between corals and microplastics have, to date, used particle concentrations that are several orders of magnitude above environmentally relevant levels. Here we investigate whether concentrations closer to values reported in tropical coral reefs affect sediment shedding and heterotrophy in reef-building corals. We show that single-pulse microplastic deposition elicits significantly more coral polyp retraction than comparable amounts of calcareous sediments. When deposited separately from sediments, microplastics remain longer on corals than sediments, through stronger adhesion and longer periods of examination by the coral polyps. Contamination of sediments with microplastics does not retard corals' sediment clearing rates. Rather, sediments speed-up microplastic shedding, possibly affecting its electrostatic behaviour. Heterotrophy rates are three times higher than microplastic ingestion rates when corals encounter microzooplankton (Artemia salina cysts) and microplastics separately. Exposed to cysts-microplastic combinations, corals feed preferentially on cysts regardless of microplastic concentration. Sex hormones, such as androgens, estrogens and progestins are naturally occurring compounds that tightly regulate endocrine systems in a variety of living organisms. Uncontrolled environmental exposure to these hormones or their biological and synthetic mimetics has been widely documented. Furthermore, water contaminants penetrate soil to affect flora, fauna and ultimately humans. Because endocrine systems evolved to respond to very small changes in hormone levels, the low levels found in the environment cannot be ignored. The combined actions of sex hormones with glucocorticoids and other nuclear receptors disruptors creates additional level of complexity including the newly described "dynamic assisted loading" mechanism. Aluminium (Al) is the most common natural metallic element in the Earth's crust. It is released into the environment through natural processes and human activities and accumulates in aquatic environments. This review compiles scientific data on the neurotoxicity of aluminium contamination on the nervous system of aquatic organisms. More precisely, it helps identify biomarkers of aluminium exposure for aquatic environment biomonitoring in freshwater aquatic vertebrates. Al is neurotoxic and accumulates in the nervous system of aquatic vertebrates, which is why it could be responsible for oxidative stress. In addition, it activates and inhibits antioxidant enzymes and leads to changes in acetylcholinesterase activity, neurotransmitter levels, and in the expression of several neural genes and nerve cell components. It also causes histological changes in nerve tissue, modifications of organism behaviour, and cognitive deficit. However, impacts of aluminium exposure on the early stages of aquatic vertebrate development are poorly described. Lastly, this review also poses the question of how accurate aquatic vertebrates (fishes and amphibians) could be used as model organisms to complement biological data relating to the developmental aspect. This "challenge" is very relevant since freshwater pollution with heavy metals has increased in the last few decades.

Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), a primary approach for evaluating gene expression, requires an appropriate normalization strategy to confirm relative gene expression levels by comparison, and rule out variations that might occur in analytical procedures. The best option is to use a reference gene whose expression level is stable across various experimental conditions to compare the mRNA levels of a target gene. However, there is limited information on how the reference gene is differentially expressed at different ages (growth) in small invertebrates with notable changes such as molting. In this study, expression profiles of nine candidate reference genes from the brackish water flea, Diaphanosoma celebensis, were evaluated under diverse exposure to toxicants and according to growth. As a result, four different algorithms showed similar stabilities of genes for chemical exposures in the case of limited conditions using the same developmental stage (H2A was stable, whereas Act was fairly unstable in adults), while the results according to age showed a significantly different pattern in suite of candidate reference genes. This affected the results of genes EcRA and GST, which are involved in development and detoxification mechanisms, respectively. Our finding is the first step towards establishing a standardized real-time qRT-PCR analysis of this environmentally important invertebrate that has potential for aquatic ecotoxicology, particularly in estuarine environments., (© 2021. Health risk analysis can predict and control the risks posed by heavy metals, especially in drinking water, which is a highly sensitive environmental receptors. In order to evaluate heavy metal pollution in drinking water, the monthly average concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Zn were used to assess the health risk between January 2015 and December 2018 in a drinking water source. Furthermore, Spearman rank correlation coefficient and the ARIMA model were used to analyze temporal variations. The results showed that the monthly average concentrations of heavy metals exceeded the class Ⅲ values as specified by Chinese environmental quality standard for surface water(GB 3838-2002), especially Hg with a minimum monthly average four times more than that set by the standard limits. Overall, the order of carcinogenic risk of As and Cd was decreased; the non-carcinogenic risk of Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Hg was increased. Further, the comprehensive non-carcinogenic risk for adults was lower than 1 throughout the study period except February 2015, when the comprehensive non-carcinogenic risk for children was lower than or close to 1 after October 2017, and the comprehensive carcinogenic risk for children was more than 10 -4 . Meanwhile, the children's health risks are higher than that for adults, with the main health risk characteristic factors of As, Cd, and Hg. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient were -0.714069, -0.773122, and -0.62234, indicating the significant downward trend from 2015 to 2018. However, the children's comprehensive carcinogenic risk, whose average value was 0.000234 much more than 10 -4 , had significant upward trend in 2018 with Spearman rank correlation coefficient 0.902098. The ARIMA(3,1,3) model was able to predict the comprehensive carcinogenic risk for children from heavy metals in drinking water, and the result indicated the children comprehensive carcinogenic risk should be monitored to ensure levels between 0.000200 and 0.000302. The study has positive significance for risk warning and environmental management compared to the analysis and prediction of health risk from heavy metals in drinking water sources based on time series models.

Deltamethrin is a widely used insecticide that kills a wide variety of insects and ticks. Deltamethrin resistance develops as a result of intensive, repeated use, as well as increased environmental contamination and a negative impact on public health. Its negative impact on aquatic ecology and human health necessitated the development of a new technique for environmental remediation and wastewater treatment, such as the use of nanotechnology. The co-precipitation method was used to create Zn-Fe/LDH, Zn-AL-GA/LDH, and Fe-oxide nanoparticles (NPs), which were then characterized using XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and HR-TEM. The kinetic study of adsorption test revealed that these NPs were effective at removing deltamethrin from wastewater. The larval packet test, which involved applying freshly adsorbed deltamethrin nanocomposites (48 hours after adsorption), and the comet assay test were used to confirm that deltamethrin had lost its acaricidal efficacy. The kinetics of the deltamethrin adsorption process was investigated using several kinetic models at pH 7, initial concentration of deltamethrin 40 ppm and temperature 25°C. Within the first 60 min, the results indicated efficient adsorption performance in deltamethrin removal, the maximum adsorption capacity was 27.56 mg/L, 17.60 mg/L, and 3.06 mg/L with the Zn-Al LDH/GA, Zn-Fe LDH, and Fe Oxide, respectively. On tick larvae, the results of the freshly adsorbed DNC bioassay revealed larval mortality. This suggests that deltamethrin's acaricidal activity is still active. However, applying DNCs to tick larvae 48 hours after adsorption had no lethal effect, indicating that deltamethrin had lost its acaricidal activity. The latter result corroborated the results of the adsorption test's kinetic study. Furthermore, the comet assay revealed that commercial deltamethrin caused 28.51% DNA damage in tick cells, which was significantly higher than any DNC. In conclusion, the NPs used play an important role in deltamethrin decontamination in water, resulting in reduced public health risk. A variety of mammals suppress reproduction when they experience poor physical condition or environmental harshness. In many marine mammal species, reproductive impairment has been correlated to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the most frequently measured chemical pollutants, while the relative importance of other factors remains understudied. We investigate whether reproductively active females abandon investment in their foetus when conditions are poor, exemplified using an extensively studied cetacean species; the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Data on disease, fat and muscle mass and diet obtained from necropsies in The Netherlands were used as proxies of health and nutritional status and related to pregnancy and foetal growth. This was combined with published life history parameters for 16 other areas to correlate to parameters reflecting environmental condition: mean energy density of prey constituting diets (MEDD), cumulative human impact and PCB contamination. Maternal nutritional status had significant effects on foetal size and females in poor health had lower probabilities of being pregnant and generally did not sustain pregnancy throughout gestation. Pregnancy rates across the Northern Hemisphere were best explained by MEDD. Alexandrium affine is a global harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming dinoflagellate. In this study, the effect of non-toxin-producing A. affine on the gill and liver tissues of red seabream, Pagrus major, was analyzed over 24 h exposure and 2 h depuration phases. After exposure to three concentrations of A. affine (4,000, 6,000, and 7,000 cells mL -1 ), survival rates, respiration rates, immunities (lysozyme, total Ig), hepatic biomarkers (alanine aminotransferase, ALT; aspartate aminotransferase, AST; and alkaline phosphatase, ALP), lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA), and antioxidant defense systems (glutathione, GSH; catalase, CAT; superoxide dismutase, SOD; glutathione peroxidases, GPx; and glutathione reductase, GR) were analyzed in gill and liver tissues. Dose-dependent decreases in survival and respiration rates were detected in red seabream. A. affine levels of to 6,000 and 7,000 cells mL -1 induced immunosuppression and hepatic impairment in both tissues, as measured by significant decreases in lysozyme activity, total Ig level, ALT, AST, and ALP content. The levels of GSH, CAT, SOD, GPx, and GR were significantly decreased in the gills and liver in response to 7,000 cells mL -1 of A. affine at 24 h, and MDA was elevated. However, different response patterns were observed between tissues in response to 4,000 cells mL -1 . Activity of antioxidant defense enzymes was significantly elevated in the liver but decreased in the gills. This suggests that the gills were more vulnerable than the liver. In the case of 6,000 and 7,000 cells mL -1 treatments, higher susceptibility was also detected at 3 h in the gill compared to the overall responses of each parameter measured in liver. Taken together, direct attachment of A. affine to the gill tissue strongly affects immunity and antioxidant capacity of red seabream even after a short exposure period. Background: Effective nitrogen (N) management measures are required to control environmental problems caused by N fertilizer use in intensive maize production systems. Soil N losses associated with high precipitation and over-fertilization in maize production can cause substantial environmental problems, whereas there is a lack of quantitative data and effective study countermeasures. A 2-year field study was conducted in the subtropical maize production system in Southwest China to quantify N leaching under varying N application rates of 0, 90, 180, 270 and 360 kg N ha -1  yr -1 ., Results: The results indicated that N leaching accounted for 16-38% of N fertilizer input. For farmer practice treatment (360 kg N ha -1  yr -1 ), N leaching loss was high at 110 kg N ha -1  yr -1 and accounted for 31% of the N applied. As an indicator of the ambient water quality pollution, the grey water footprint across all treatments ranged from 376 to 1092 m 3 Mg -1 , with an average of 695 m 3 Mg -1 . Reducing N rate to agronomically optimized treatment (180 kg N ha -1  yr -1 ) significantly decreased N leaching by 77%, and maintained high grain yield of 8.1 Mg ha -1 . The grey water footprint was reduced by 52-63% with N rates from 270 or 360 kg N ha -1  yr -1 to 180 kg N ha -1  yr -1 ., Conclusion: Nitrogen surplus (applied N rate minus N uptake by maize) resulted in higher soil residual nitrate concentration and consequently high N leaching. Studies on trace element (TE) pollution in abiotic matrices have typically focused on water, sediment, and soil, either separately or in pairs. The importance of multi-media connectivity has been ignored. This study analyzed the concentrations of 6 TEs in three connected environmental compartments of a 28-km section of the lower reach of the Jinsha River. The ecological risk posed by TEs was higher in soil than in sediment. The contribution of exposure pathways to human health risk were ranked as ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. An improved regional environmental risk index (RERI) method was then developed to evaluate the comprehensive risk on both ecology and human health caused by TEs. The average RERI value was generally higher in the wet season (0.42) than in the dry (0.41) and dry-to-wet transition seasons (0.08) because of the combined effects of the high TE concentrations in riparian soil and the long exposure time. Source apportionment indicated that industrial activities, weathering of parent rock, and agricultural activities were possible sources of TEs in this region. Anthropogenic input of mercury into watersheds is becoming increasingly noticeable and is the cause of fishery products contamination. This had led to the Convention of Minamata signed and ratified by the vast majority of the countries in the world. Lake Nokoué in Benin Republic, the most fishery products provider in West Africa, is subject to mercury pollution. The health threat to both the benthic and the consumers of the fishery products from this lake has to be anticipated by precisely determining the dynamics of mercury contamination of the waters and sediments of Lake Nokoué, taking into account the anthropogenic contribution. Water and sediment samples were collected on 23 sites twice a month for four sampling campaigns. Parameters such as pH, salinity, COD, and SS are evaluated in the water. The assessment of total mercury is conducted by cold vapor atomic absorption according to the US EPA 7473 method, using a direct mercury analyzer (DMA-80). On average, the mercury content in Lake Nokoué water is 0.43 ± 0.57  μ g/kg. Its variation is linked not only to the seasonal variation but also to that of the suspended matter. Bisphenol A (BPA) is noted for its adversative effects by inducing oxidative stress, carcinogenicity, neurotoxicity, inflammation, etc. However, the likely act of BPA in inducing neurodegenerative phenotypes remains elusive in the available literature. Hence, the present study was conducted to decipher the neurodegenerative potential of BPA in inducing Parkinson's disease like phenotypes in zebrafish. Zebrafish were subjected to chronic waterborne exposure to BPA for 56 days. Locomotor activities and neurobehavioral response were assessed by the NTDT (novel tank diving test), OFT (open field test), and LDPT (light-dark preference test). The oxidative stress markers and histopathological observation for pyknosis and chromatin condensation were carried out. Immunohistochemistry for activated caspase-3 and targeted proteins expression study was performed. The basic findings reveal that chronic BPA exposure significantly induces locomotor dysfunction through a significant decline in mean velocity and total distance traveled. As a measure of pyknosis and chromatin condensation, pyknotic and Hoechst positive neurons in telencephalon and diencephalon significantly increased by BPA exposure. A higher concentration of BPA adversely affects the neurobehavioral response, antioxidant status, and neuromorphology in zebrafish. Parkinson-relevant targeted protein expression viz. alpha-synuclein and LRRK2, were significantly upregulated, whereas tyrosine hydroxylase, NeuN, and Nurr1 were significantly downregulated in the zebrafish brain. As an indicator of cell death by apoptosis, the expression of activated caspase-3 was significantly increased in the BPA-exposed zebrafish brain. These basic results of the current study indicate that chronic waterborne exposure to BPA induces neuropathological manifestation leading to the development of motor dysfunction and Parkinsonism-like neurodegenerative phenotypes in zebrafish., (© 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)
