Climate-related disasters pose significant risks to mental health and well-being globally. Individuals from disaster-prone regions, such as Puerto Rico, are at even greater risk. The devastating effects of recurrent hurricanes, compounded with pre-existing structural disparities (e.g., poverty and corruption), can further exacerbate psychosocial vulnerabilities and drive mass migration to the United States mainland. Most research on mental health among climate migrants focuses on risks, whereas promotive factors such as thriving are often overlooked. In the present study, we estimated a longitudinal structural equation model to examine the predictive effect of psychological thriving (i.e., optimism, life satisfaction) on sociocultural thriving (i.e., income, happiness, comfort, job satisfaction), mental distress (i.e., internalizing symptoms, post-traumatic stress) and cultural stressors using three waves of data from 319 adult Hurricane Maria survivor migrants (HMSMs) who relocated to the U.S. mainland between 2017 and 2020. We also examined the mediating effect of prosocial behavior and collective efficacy in this association. Our findings indicate various direct, simple mediation, and serial mediation paths between baseline psychological thriving and outcomes. Life satisfaction and collective efficacy mediated most of the predicted indirect pathways. These results suggest that, despite facing complex challenges, HMSMs are not only adapting to their mainland communities but are also thriving., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

This study aimed to examine the rejection-identification model (RIM) within a community sample of undocumented Hispanic immigrants in the United States, a unique and vulnerable population who face distinct legal and sociopolitical challenges. The RIM posits that ethnic discrimination is associated with increased identification with one's ethnic group, which, in turn, is positively associated with well-being. Data were collected from a community sample of 140 undocumented Hispanic immigrants living in the South-Central United States during the height of the 2015 Trump presidential campaign. Path analysis was employed to examine direct and indirect effects of perceived ethnic discrimination vis-à-vis ethnic identity, U.S. identity, and two forms of well-being (life satisfaction and flourishing). Age ( M = 34.83), gender (50% men), and time spent in the United States were included as covariates. Higher ethnic discrimination was associated with lower U.S. and ethnic identity. Both ethnic and U.S. identity were positively associated with flourishing, whereas only U.S. identity was positively associated with life satisfaction. We also found a significant indirect effect of ethnic identity in the relationship between ethnic discrimination and flourishing. Findings are inconsistent with the RIM, as ethnic discrimination was negatively rather than positively associated with ethnic group identification. Undocumented Hispanic immigrants are a vulnerable population who may experience dual disidentification from both U.S. and ethnic cultural streams when perceiving ethnic discrimination during adverse sociopolitical periods. The present study examines the extent to which culturally stressful experiences may predict impaired well-being, increased internalizing symptoms (depression and anxiety), and increased externalizing problems (social aggression, physical aggression, and rule breaking) among a sample of Hispanic college students in Miami across a 12-day period. The predictive effects of cultural stressors on these outcomes were examined both (a) directly and (b) indirectly through daily fluctuations in students' personal identity synthesis and confusion. Results indicated direct predictive effects of cultural stress on four forms of well-being (self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological well-being, and eudaimonic well-being), on symptoms of depression and anxiety, and on physical aggression and rule breaking. The predictive effects of cultural stress on all four forms of well-being and on symptoms of depression and anxiety were partially mediated through daily fluctuations (instability) in students' sense of personal identity synthesis. Findings were consistent across genders and between U.S.- and foreign-born students. Results are discussed in terms of implications for intervention and for policy. This study investigated the functional neuroanatomy involved in retrieval of structured versus unstructured verbal information. We compared cerebral blood flow using PET with the [15O]water method while subjects engaged in recall of novel and practised narratives and lists of unrelated words. Left orbital frontal cortex was activated during recall of both novel and practised unrelated words. Right parietal cortex was relatively more active during recall of the novel word list. Right orbital frontal cortex and anterior cingulate were relatively more active during recall of the practised but not the novel word list. These results are consistent with the role of left orbital frontal cortex in retrieval of unstructured verbal information. Right orbital frontal activity suggests that cognitive strategies may be involved in retrieval of well-practised words.
