Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a next-generation dark matter direct detection experiment that will operate 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. Using a two-phase xenon detector with an active mass of 7 tonnes, LZ will search primarily for low-energy interactions with weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are hypothesized to make up the dark matter in our galactic halo. In this paper, the projected WIMP sensitivity of LZ is presented based on the latest background estimates and simulations of the detector. For a 1000 live day run using a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, LZ is projected to exclude at 90% confidence level spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections above 1.4 × 10-48cm2 for a 40 GeV/c2 mass WIMP. \ud Additionally, a 5σ discovery potential is projected, reaching cross sections below the exclusion limits of recent experiments. For spin-dependent WIMP-neutron(-proton) scattering, a sensitivity of 2.3 × 10−43 cm2 (7.1 × 10−42 cm2) for a 40 GeV/c2\ud mass WIMP is expected. With underground installation well underway, LZ is on track for commissioning at SURF in 2020.

Abstract

Low risk herbicides are now commonly used on lawn height turfgrass to manage weeds. This study compared various rates of Fiesta liquid and soluble granular formulations to determine their effectiveness of controlling broadleaf weed populations on lawn-height turfgrass. To analyze control of weed populations, point-quadrat weed counts, NDVI and visual ratings were used throughout the experiment. There were significant reductions in NDVI at ~3 and 5 DAT for most Fiesta treatments, and when compared to the untreated control was consistent with visual weed phytotoxicity observations following both applications. There were some differences in percent reduction of weeds throughout the experiment, but with irrigation to prevent drought stress of the turf and the very hot conditions we experienced here in Guelph this summer, regrowth of weeds, especially clover seemed to be very high. Abstract

Dollar spot caused by the fungal pathogen Clarireedia jacksonii is one of the most common and damaging foliar pathogens of low-cut golf course turf. This disease is of importance from both an economic and functional aspect. Putting greens can become very inconsistent playing surfaces if the disease is left untreated and aesthetics are also unacceptable for end users. Five commercially available fungicide products on a fourteen day spray interval were compared with an untreated control in this study to determine efficacy. Plots were challenged with inoculum to ensure disease pressure was consistent across all treatments. Turfgrass populations and percent disease damage were determined using point-quadrat method. NDVI and turf colour and quality were also recorded at 7 and ~13 days post-treatment applications. All plots treated with fungicide performed similarly and had significantly less damage from the pathogen than the untreated control. Abstract

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are applied to economically significant turf on golf courses to control height, reduce frequency of mowing operations, and enhance playing surface consistency. This study compared Anuew (prohexadione-calcium), Primo Maxx (trinexapac-ethyl) and experimental PGR NAI-20026 on turfgrass growth and quality parameters on a mature bentgrass/annual bluegrass greens height stand of turf. On many occasions throughout the experiment, PGR treatments significantly reduced turfgrass growth when compared to the untreated control and improved turfgrass quality and colour ratings. A rate effect was also detected in the experiment and NufTE (experimental NAI-20026) performed similarly to Primo on both the GDD and 4-week application schedule and often were ranked the same for many parameters throughout the experiment. No stress symptoms (yellowing, etiolation) were observed on the putting green turf in response to PGR application during hot/dry weather at any point during the experiment. Nufarm

Moss populations are economically damaging and challenging to control on golf course putting surfaces. This study compared commercially available herbicides to the industry standard (Quicksilver) to determine effectiveness of controlling moss populations on a sand putting green. Moss plug diameter measurements were conducted pre-treatment and three times throughout the experimental period to determine effects on moss growth. Visual ratings using the NTEP scale were conducted post-treatment for quality measures. No significant changes in moss plug diameter were observed in the experiment; some moss plug colour differences were observed. Turfgrass phytotoxicity was observed in response to product application. Further research is recommended to further evaluate the treatments as hot and dry conditions throughout the experiment may have negatively impacted moss growth, rain following the second treatment application may have had an effect on the results observed, and naturally occurring silvery thread moss populations may respond differently to the treatments. Abstract

Using herbicides to control weeds is a well- established method in agriculture. This study compared liquid and dry formulants of Fiesta at different rates to determine pre and post-emergent control of weeds. The control of weeds was determined using visual ratings and point quadrat weed counts throughout the study. The visual ratings showed some significant differences between the treatments at various days after treatment. For the point quadrat weed counts, there were many significant differences between treatments at various days after treatment. Overall, there were statistically significant differences between the weeds but few between the formulants and rates of Fiesta. Abstract

Maximizing the amount of water that reaches the rootzones is important for maintaining healthy golf greens. This study compared various wetting agent treatments on calcareous and siliceous sand putting greens to determine their capabilities of reaching soil root zones and their impacts on turfgrass properties. To document the effect of the wetting agents on the rootzone profiles over time, soil volumetric water content was taken throughout the study using a TDR probe. Visual ratings and NDVI readings were taken on a weekly basis as an indicator of turfgrass colour quality. Water droplet penetration tests (WDPT) were done periodically throughout the study to assess infiltration of wetting agents into the rootzones. There were few significant differences in TDR values between treatments and controls at various days after treatment on the calcareous sand putting green. The siliceous sand putting green had significant differences in TDR values between treatments and controls at certain days after treatment. There were no significant differences in visual ratings and NDVI readings on both calcareous and siliceous sand putting greens. On the calcareous sand putting green, there were significant differences in WDPT at 0 cm between the treatments and controls. On the siliceous sand putting green, there were significant differences in WDPT at 0-5 cm depths between the treatments and controls. Abstract

Plant growth regulators are compounds applied on golf courses to control turfgrass height. This study compared Anuew (active ingredient prohexadione-calcium) and Primo Maxx (active ingredient trinexapac-ethyl) as plant growth regulators on a mixed-stand fairway of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass. Visual ratings and NDVI readings were taken as measures of canopy quality and colour on a weekly basis. Fresh weight and dry weight clipping collections were taken every 350 GDD as measures of plant biomass. Visual ratings and NDVI readings showed some significant differences between treatments and control. Clipping biomass (fresh weight and dry weight) showed significant differences between the control and the treatments but there were no significant differences between the two treatments. As the rate of application of Anuew increased, there was less clipping biomass. Anuew and Primo-Maxx performed similarly as they both effectively regulated the growth height of the mixed-stand fairway. Nufarm, Guelph Turfgrass Institute

27. Seasonal changes in environmental nutrient availability and biomass composition in a coral reef sponge

Abstract

Sponges are crucial ecosystem engineers in most marine habitats, playing a critical role in cycling elements between the water column and the sea floor. Despite this, it is unclear how the nutritional status of the seawater surrounding a sponge influences its biochemical composition. Here, we investigate seasonal availability of the major nutrients in the water surrounding Amphimedon queenslandica, a coral reef demosponge inhabiting a low-energy reef flat environment adjacent to Heron Island on the southern Great Barrier Reef. Specifically, we investigate how nutrient availability might influence the biomass composition of this sponge species by analysing five replicated water and sponge samples collected over 13 months. Eleven environmental parameters had significant differences between at least two seasons. Some of these changes in nutrient availability were consistent with known ecological processes occurring on Heron Island and its surrounding waters. For instance, the availability and sources of carbon and nitrogen changed throughout the year, with both strongly influenced by nutrients emanating from the summer seabird rookery on the island. Several environmental parameters were strongly correlated, such as total and dissolved organic carbon with each other and with nitrate and sulfate, respectively. Amongst biomass components, skeletal content was significantly correlated with temperature, DNA with total organic carbon, and skeleton and lipid biomass with orthophosphate concentration, which was significantly higher in lower water temperatures. Nonetheless, we observed few compelling correlations between biomass composition in A. queenslandica and nutritional status of the surrounding seawater on a seasonal time scale.

Plant growth regulators are used on golf courses to maintain the height of turfgrasses on greens and fairways. This study investigated the effectiveness of existing and new formulants of trinexapac-ethyl on mixed stands of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) and annual bluegrass (Poa annua) on a golf green and fairway. Plant growth regulation was determined by measuring clipping biomass 8-10 days after treatment and NDVI and quality ratings were also recorded to assess plant health. On the golf green, there were no significant differences in dry weight between the control and treatments of trinexapac-ethyl. The NDVI readings showed significant differences between the control and treatments on June 27, August 14, August 29, September 05 and September 12. For the visual ratings, only one of the treatments was significantly different than the control. On the fairway, there was a significant difference in dry weight between the control and treatments on June 28. There were significant differences in NDVI readings between the control and treatments on June 27, July 4, July 11, July 20, and July 25. There were significant differences in colour ratings between the control and treatments during most of the study period except for June 15 and July 25. The different treatments of trinexapac-ethyl performed similarly in their effects on turfgrass growth, NDVI and visual quality ratings. ADAMA Canada Ltd.

Improving drought stress tolerance helps the turfgrass survive with limited amount of water. This study compared various performance measures of L-93 creeping bentgrass maintained at fairway height using different products in a greenhouse setting. Turfgrass quality measures were taken using NTEP visual ratings and NDVI readings. Clipping collections and root mass were taken to assess plant biomass. Realtime water loss measures were taken to assess drought tolerance through transpiration. There were statistically significant differences in turfgrass quality using NTEP ratings and NDVI readings between the treatments and control. There were no statistically significant differences in plant biomass and root mass between the treatments and control in Phase a) of the experiment. There were statistically significant differences in plant biomass and root mass between the treatments and control in Phase b) of the experiment.
