The article reports on a study of methodological innovation involving occupational therapy (OT) students in higher education (HE). It is based on an original project which examined the experiences and outcomes of non-traditional entrants to pre-registration OT education. A feature of the original project was the application of the epistemological and methodological approach of the French social theorist Pierre Bourdieu, most noticeably in exploring the way that social back ground ("habitus") interacted with the educational ("field") context in terms of experience and educational outcome. Bourdieu used a ranged of techniques--both qualitative and quantitative--in collecting and analysing data. In particular, he used multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), a type of geometric data analysis recognized as a powerful tool enabling the representation of social space and the situating of individuals within it with respect to a number of variables. The article considers methodological principles in comparing ethnographic, traditional statistics and MCA. We show how the original data were reanalysed according to MCA. The article compares the original analyses and findings with those based on MCA in order to explore its strength over the previous approach and the potential it has to cast light on various issues in HE.

Government policies and financial imperatives have fostered growing heterogeneity in student bodies in UK and Australian higher education (HE), but the underpinning logic of practice in these long-established social fields is far slower to change. Drawing on empirical evidence from case studies in each nation, this paper examines the tensions between the espoused and enacted values of the academy in relation to the widening participation and internationalisation agendas. We describe the research sites, their relationships with their respective fields of power and the experiences of participants as inhabitants of these HE fields. We highlight the struggles to secure relevant capital, acts of symbolic violence occurring at both institutional and programme levels and the resultant impact on individual positions and trajectories within the fields. Finally, we consider the extent to which the established practices in HE, which naturally preserve the dominance of the dominating factions, are likely to shift to enable it to genuinely enact the social conscience it espouses.

Under-representation in UK higher education of students from less privileged social backgrounds is an enduring problem. While there are examples of productive participation, the pattern of collective trajectories of this group differs sharply from that of traditional entrants. The onus falls largely on students to adapt to established practices that remain strongly oriented towards traditional white middle-class populations. Bourdieu's theory of practice informed the analysis of data emerging from a longitudinal case study, and empirical insights are offered into how students with non-traditional academic backgrounds experienced and negotiated the demands of studying in one of the UK's research-intensive universities. A new conceptual framework identifies academic, linguistic, social and professionally-oriented capital as underpinning the logic of practice of this sub-field of higher education, and their influence on the positional tendencies and trajectories of the students operating within it are highlighted. Occupational therapy pre-registration education stands at the intersection of the fields of health and social care and higher education. UK Government agendas in both fields have seen an increase in the number of students entering with non-traditional academic backgrounds, a group noted to experience particular challenges in negotiating the transition to, and persisting and succeeding within, higher education. Drawing on data from an ongoing longitudinal case study, a Bourdieuian lens is applied to exploring the early educational experiences of a group of these students during their first year of study and highlights a number of key issues, including the high-value status of linguistic capital and its relationship to understanding the rules governing practices within the learning environment, the processes via which students manage to adapt to or interestingly, to resist, the dominant culture of the field, and some of the barriers to finding a foothold and legitimate position within the new field. Introduction: Various committees provide health technology assessment (HTA) recommendations to the Australian government on health technology subsidization. All committees include consumer members, but operations vary across committees. To support the committee's consumer members and facilitate consumer input, the Consumer Evidence and Engagement Unit (CEEU) was launched in 2019. The CEEU aims to enhance inclusion of consumer input in Commonwealth HTA processes. Methods: The CEEU operates within the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care in a hybrid format. The core functions of the CEEU include secretariat support for the HTA Consumer Consultative Committee (CCC), which comprises consumer members from all HTA committees. The CEEU also summarizes consumer input for the HTA committees. In 2022, the CEEU launched the Conversations for Change series, which was developed through a range of different consultation activities. As a result, an ongoing "Changing Conversations" mandate is in place, to build and sustain relational, non-transactional partnerships in a true collaborative style. Results: The HTA committees and subcommittees operate across cycles with overlapping timelines, requiring consumer input to be gathered at different timepoints for different purposes. The CEEU has launched materials, including the Consultation Hub and HTA Engage, and is developing a Consultation Toolkit to raise awareness and facilitate these processes. The role of the HTA CCC is evolving as a forum to enable consumer committee members to share experiences and receive CEEU support. Improvements in consultation processes have enabled the CEEU to provide consumer comments to consumer committee members to facilitate genuine representation of consumer and other external stakeholder views. Conclusions: Managing consumer input can be resource intensive, however there is increasing recognition of the importance of consumer engagement in Australian HTA. The CEEU expects continued growth and a wider remit from 2024, as new processes and changes occur. Introduction: In 2021, the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care's Consumer Evidence and Engagement Unit (CEEU) launched an online consultation hub to provide a centralized pathway for consumer engagement in health technology assessment (HTA) processes. The hub enables consumers (patients, carers, health professionals, and citizens) to provide commentary on items being considered by HTA committees for subsidization. Methods: A survey was developed by the CEEU, committee members, and consumer representatives to facilitate consultation on applications assessed by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC)—a principal Australian HTA committee. Questions were designed as simple and engaging, including guidance on the type of information required. Responses are summarized thematically by efficacy, safety, accessibility, and quality-of-life impacts of the proposed health technology. New surveys are launched to coincide with each PBAC meeting agenda publication and allow a ten-week consultation period. Awareness of consultations is supported by the CEEU's HTA Engage e-newsletter, which alerts the public and targeted stakeholders. Results: The hub surveys have enabled streamlined consumer commentary to be provided for PBAC considerations. It has also allowed increased time for quality consultation with stakeholders. The success of the hub is further demonstrated in the current development of a similar survey for another principal committee, the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC), to transition its consultation processes to the hub. Of note, while consumers' feedback on the hub is positive, there remains a desire for educational resources and face-to-face interactions to support consumer engagement in HTA processes. The CEEU are developing materials to address and further support this need. Conclusions: In a time when technological communication can be optimized to complement face-to-face conversations, it is vital consumer engagement in HTA processes follows suit. To facilitate continued engagement that is sustainable for both present and future Australians, the CEEU continues to evolve a strategy regarding virtual consultations to increase consumer awareness and education and promote effective participation in Australian HTA. Objectives: This project was implemented on behalf of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Consumer Consultative Committee (CCC) to explore training to support and retain new consumer representatives to participate effectively in HTA committees. These committees are key parts of the Australian Government's health system. Currently, there is no training available to them, specific to their roles in HTA committees. Hypothesizing that mentoring is appropriate, the project team undertook a literature review to identify definitions of mentoring, its benefits, skills requirements, resources, examples of best practice, and how mentoring might support consumer representatives in formal health technology assessment committee structures. Methods: A rapid review was commenced by the project team and fifty-seven articles were identified and read independently. Following discussion, the team revised its approach as there was little evidence to assess and drew upon thirty-five articles where elements of mentoring were described. Discussion was followed by a thematic qualitative analysis exploring mentoring models. Results: The project team agreed that features of mentoring programs were necessary to design a mentoring program under the headings of definitions, mentors' qualities, benefits of training, resources, other considerations, and evaluation. These assist the design of a pilot project to test mentoring's effectiveness. Conclusion: Mentoring may assist consumers working in the health technology area to develop their skills and competencies and contribute to representing the needs of health consumers in the approval of applications. A pilot mentoring program is currently being designed and will run with one mentor and one mentee in an HTA committee. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
