Abstract

International audience; Mutual impedance experiments have been developed to constrain the plasma bulk properties, such as density and temperature, of ionospheric and later space plasmas, through the electric coupling between an emitter and a receiver electric antennas. So far, the analytical modeling of such instruments has enabled to treat ionospheric plasmas, where charged particles are usually well characterized by Maxwellian electron distributions. With the growth of planetary exploration, mutual impedance experiments are or will be used to constrain space plasma bulk properties. Space plasmas are usually out of local thermodynamic equilibrium; therefore, new methods to calibrate and analyze mutual impedance experiments are now required in such non-Maxwellian plasmas. To this purpose, this work aims at modeling the electric potential generated in a two-electron temperature plasma by a pulsating point charge. A numerical method is developed for the computation of the electrostatic potential in a sum of Maxwellian plasmas. After validating the method, the results are used to build synthetic mutual impedance spectra and quantify the effect of a warm electron population on mutual impedance experiments, in order to illustrate how the method could be applied for recent and future planetary space missions, such as Rosetta, BepiColombo, and JUICE. In particular, we show how it enables to separate the densities and temperatures of two different electron populations using in situ measurements from the RPC-MIP mutual impedance experiment on board Rosetta.

Abstract

International audience; Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, target of the ESA’s Rosetta mission, reached its perihelion at 1.3 AU fromthe Sun in August 2015. Its plasma environment will go on being monitored by the Rosetta Plasma Consortium(RPC) as the distance to the sun increases, until end of mission in September 2016.Combining observations from the different RPC sensors, we investigate localised, strong enhancements of thecometary plasma density over short timescales (- minutes to seconds) observed during the period April 2015- January 2016. These strong plasma density variations (RPC-MIP and RPC-LAP) are likely associated to coldelectrons (RPC-IES) and generally observed during magnetic field rotations (RPC-MAG). The location of suchevents, both in the rotating comet frame and with regard to the magnetic field direction, is discussed to betterconstrain the mechanism at the origin of these localised plasma density enhancements

Abstract

International audience; In August 2015, comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, target of the ESA’s Rosetta mission, reached its perihelion at 1.3 AU from the Sun. The Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC) onboard the Rosetta spacecraft offers a unique opportunity to analyze the plasma environment during this period. Combining observations from the Mutual Impedance probe (RPC-MIP) and the Langmuir probes (RPC-LAP), we estimate the cometary plasma density. We will present its spatial distribution around the comet when close to perihelion. Combined Mutual impedance and Langmuir probes density measurements are also compared to the density derived from particle measurements (RPC-ICA and RPC-IES). In addition, we will focus on localised, strong variations of the cometary plasma density over short timescales (~ minutes to seconds) observed during this period. These strong plasma density enhancements are interpreted taken into account the electron energy spectrum measured by the Ion and Electron Spectrometer (RPC-IES). Possible correlations of these plasma enhancements with variations in the magnetic field direction measured from the Magnetometer (RPC-MAG) will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The mutual impedance probe is an active radio frequency probe, designed to measure in situ the bulk plasma properties. An ideal configuration consists of both a transmitting and a receiving dipole, whose baseline is at least a few Debye Lengths. Due to various accommodation constraints on the spacecraft, the transmitter may only be a monopole. In that case, the image of the transmitter charge is distributed over the whole spacecraft surface. The operating principle consists in injecting a frequency-variable current through the transmitter, in a frequency range that encompasses the plasma frequency (or upper hybrid frequency in a magnetised plasma), and measuring the induced voltage at the receiver. Assuming a transmitted current I(f) of constant amplitude that induces a potential difference V(f) at the receiver dipole, the mutual impedance probe provides the coupling complex impedance Z(f) = V(f)/I(f) between the transmitter and the receiver as a function of frequency. The impedance depends on the plasma properties, in particular the bulk density and temperature (in case of a Maxwellian distribution) of the electron population. The measurement principle is illustrated with in situ observations from the Mutual Impedance Probe (RPC-MIP), one of the five sensors of the Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC) on the ESA Rosetta mission. RPC-MIP has been providing regular measurements of the comet plasma environment since early August 2014 when Rosetta was within 100 km from the nucleus of its target comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. RPC-MIP operates in the frequency range from 7 kHz to 3.5 MHz that allows covering the plasma density range expected during the mission from solar wind to deep coma densities. RPC-MIP operates in two geometrical configurations. In the baseline configuration, the transmitter and receiver dipoles are aligned on a 1m-beam. The transmitter-receiver distance, of the order of 50 cm, allows probing plasmas with Debye lengths up to 20-25 cm. For longer Debye lengths, MIP uses as the transmitter, one of the two Langmuir Probes of the RPC-LAP instrument located at about 4 m from the MIP receiving dipole, which allows probing plasma with Debye lengths up to about 2 m. Based on the same principle the Permittivity Probe (SESAME-PP), attached to the Rosetta Lander Philae, measures the electrical properties of the cometary surface material in the frequency range 20 Hz to 10 kHz. Regarding future space missions, AM2P (Active Measurement of Mercury's Plasma) is the mutual impedance experiment of the PWI (Plasma Wave Investigation) consortium, on board the MMO spacecraft of the Bepi-Colombo ESA-JAXA mission scheduled for a mid-2016 launch and arrival at Mercury in 2024. MIME (Mutual Impedance MEasurements) is the mutual impedance experiment of the RPWI (Radio and Plasma Waves Investigation) on board the ESA mission JUICE, scheduled for launch in 2022 and arrival at Jupiter in 2030.

Abstract

International audience; The ROSETTA spacecraft arrived in the vicinity of the comet in early August. As part of the Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC), the Mutual Impedance Probe (RPC-MIP) is designed to measure the bulk plasma properties in the comet environment. MIP is an active RF probe. It consists of two transmitters, which can operate separately as a monopole or coupled as a transmitting dipole, and a receiving dipole. The operating range of MIP is 7 kHz to 3.5 MHz that allows covering the plasma density range expected during the mission from solar wind to deep coma densities. The baseline distance between the transmitter and the receiver is 40-60 cm, which allows probing plasmas with Debye lengths up to 20-25 cm. For longer Debye lengths, MIP uses one of the two Langmuir Probes of the RPC-LAP instrument located at about 4 m from the MIP receiving dipole, which allows probing plasma with Debye lengths up to about 2 m. The MIP receiving dipole (baseline 1 m) can also be used in a passive mode to measure the electrical activity in the comet environment in the same frequency range. In the active mode, MIP measures the coupling complex impedance between the transmitting monopole (or dipole) and the receiving dipole. To model the frequency response of MIP, a surface charge distribution method is used that takes into account the charge distribution induced on the spacecraft structures by the transmitter. The spacecraft surface is approximated by discrete elements smaller in size than the plasma Debye length. In our model, it is assumed that each spacecraft elementary surface carries a uniform charge distribution. The electric field measured by the receiver is the sum of the contributions from the transmitter itself and of all the elementary surfaces that represent the spacecraft. The frequency of the transmitted current is varied in frequency steps. Assuming a transmitted current I(f) of constant amplitude, the potential difference V(f) between the two receivers provides the mutual impedance Z(f)=V(f)/I(f) of the instrument as a function of frequency. The first observations in active mode, as well as the background electric wave activity in the vicinity of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko are presented. Preliminary inferred plasma parameters, such as bulk electron density and temperature, are derived by using the model for the MIP frequency response.

Abstract

Apresentação em poster, This paper studies ccrf discharges (at f=13.56 MHz frequency) in pure nitrogen, produced within cylindrical parallel-plate reactors similar to GEC reference cells [1] (associated with the GREMI and the LATMOS setups, the latter corresponding to the PAMPRE experiment [2]), at 100-300 V applied voltages and 0.1-1 mbar pressures. Under these conditions, the neutral gas is found close to room temperature (~350 K) [3]. The discharges are studied using both experiments and simulations. Experiments include the measurement of the following quantities: (i) the applied voltage, using a high-voltage probe; (ii) the self-bias voltage; (iii) the effective power coupled to the plasma, taking into account circuit losses; (iv) the average electron density, using a resonant-cavity technique; (v) the intensities of radiative transitions with the nitrogen second-positive system and first-negative system, and with the 881.5 nm atomic line of argon, using optical emission spectroscopy diagnostics. The comparison between model results and measurements shows the influence in results of the nitrogen kinetics, particularly via the interaction of species with the reactor walls. Simulations use an hybrid code that couples a 2D time-dependent fluid module [4], describing the dynamics of charged particles (electrons and positive ions N2+ and N4+), and a homogeneous (0D) kinetic module, describing the production and destruction of nitrogen (atomic and molecular) neutral species. The coupling between these modules adopts the local mean energy approximation [4] to define space-time dependent electron parameters for the fluid module and to work-out space-time average rates for the kinetic module. Abstract

Discharges operated in mixtures of hydrogen and nitrogen are nowadays used as a source of active species for various kinds of applications from etching of low-k materials to modifications of polymer surfaces for biomedical applications. Moreover these kinds of discharges can provide information relevant for studies of planetary atmospheres. The present work involves the study of a low pressure capacitively coupled RF discharge operated in variable mixtures of N2 and H2 at variable pressures and powers. The systematic measurements of electron density, RF voltage, self bias and the observation of several molecular bands by means of optical emission spectroscopy gave us important information about basic processes relevant for the understanding and application of such kind of discharges. The experimental results are interpreted by means of a hybrid model, namely the effect of admixing hydrogen into a N2 discharge.

Abstract

P2-56; The present work is part of an endeavour to perform laboratory simulations of the chemistry of Titan, satellite of Saturn. In the atmosphere of Titan, composed of N2 and CH4, solid particles are produced by photochemistry and charged particles from Saturn's magnetosphere. We mimic this chemistry using a low-pressure capacitively coupled plasma (CCP), produced in a gas mixture representative of Titan's atmosphere. The production of solid particles in these discharges has already been observed, together with the delay in their formation and their effect upon the electron density. Here, we present a first contribution to this global task, by characterizing pure nitrogen CCPs (with a simpler chemistry) RF discharges. The study involves both modelling and diagnostics of the discharge plasma, aiming to compare simulations and measurements.

Abstract

International audience; Dust particle nucleation and growth has been widely studied these last 15 years in different chemistries and experimental conditions. This phenomenon is correlated with various electrical changes at electrodes, including self-bias voltage and amplitudes of the various harmonics of current and voltage. Some of these changes, such as the appearance of more resistive plasma impedance, are correctly attributed to loss of electrons in the bulk plasma to form negative molecular ions and more precisely charged nanoparticles. These changes were studied and correlated to the different phases on the dust particle formation. It is well known now that, in silane argon gas mixture discharges, in the first step of this particle formation we have formation of nanometer sized crystallites. These small entities accumulate and when their number density reaches a critical value, they start to aggregate to form bigger particles. The different phases are well defined and determined thanks to the time evolution of the different electrical parameter changes. The purpose of this contribution is to compare different chemistries to highlight similarities and/or differences in order to establish possible universal dust particle growth mechanisms. The chemistries we studied concern SiH4-Ar, CH4, CH4-N2 and Sn(CH3)4. We also refer to works performed in other laboratories in different discharge configurations.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this paper is to contribute to improve the knowledge concerning the growth steps of hydrocarbon dust particles in Ar-CH4 plasma. To achieve this aim, we monitored the plasma impedance modification, due to the particle formation, by measuring the time-evolution of the self bias voltage, the current third harmonic and the electron density. Emission Spectroscopy turns out to be a good tool for estimating the electron temperature. While, Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy are used to characterize the morphology and the size of collected powders.

The initiation and growth of hydrocarbon particles are followed thanks to the measurement of the self bias voltage, the amplitude of the third harmonic of the discharge current, the electron density and the electron temperature. The microwave resonant cavity technique is used to measure the time evolution of the electron density, while the morphology and the size of the collected powders are studied by the means of Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy.
