3. Inward and Onward: An Autoethnography on the Lived Experience of Love, Loss, and Grief in a Doctoral Program

Abstract

While research around attrition during doctoral programs exists, the lived experience of grief during a doctoral program has little footing in the current literature. This autoethnography examined the lived experience of one doctoral student, acting as both the researcher and the researched. The purpose of this study was to have a meaningful understanding of the broad grief process, and its impact on one doctoral student's identity development through sharing, analyzing, and interpreting their most raw stories in an effort to name and normalize the challenges and opportunities related to doctoral program persistence and identity development. The following research questions were explored: Q1 What might I learn about the way that my life's primary grief experience transformed my sense of identity as a doctoral student using autoethnography to evoke, recall, write about, and analyze my experiences and my reactions to them?; and Q2 What can doctoral students, program faculty, administrators and other stakeholders learn from my experience that may help students persist toward completion of their programs in the face of grief experiences of their own? Exploration and analysis uncovered themes related to academic persistence, identity development, and completion with regard to living through a grief experience during a doctoral program. This narrative description of the lived experience of grief may illuminate often taken-for-granted elements of a student's grief experience, and the overall potential prevalence for grief in doctoral students. The author offers insight into ways that doctoral program stakeholders may better understand and support grieving doctoral students. 4. The role of FUBP3 in osteoporosis

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a disease of low bone mineral density (BMD) and altered bone architecture leading to an increased risk of fracture. Worldwide, osteoporosis affects millions of people and causes an enormous and increasing healthcare burden. Reduced BMD is the major risk factor for fracture and is a highly heritable trait. Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have identifed the 9q34.11 locus containing Far Upstream Binding Protein 3 (FUBP3) as associated with BMD, fracture and height. FUBP3 is a DNA and RNA binding protein and transcriptional regulator of c-myc, but has no previously confrmed role in the skeleton. I hypothesised that FUBP3 is the causative gene underlying the association with BMD, fracture and height at the 9q34.11 locus and that FUBP3 is needed for normal bone development and maintenance. To test this hypothesis, I used bioinformatic tools to interrogate the 9q34.11 locus and prioritise FUBP3 for further study and studied the skeletal phenotype of an FUBP3 deficient mouse. Skeletal assessment included analysis of growth, bone mineral content and bone structure, strength, and cellular parameters. Analysis of the 9q34.11 locus confirmed that FUBP3 was the most likely causal gene underlying the association with BMD and was expressed in bone. Compared to wild type mice, FUBP3 defcient mice were short and demonstrated reduced bone mineral content, altered trabecular bone parameters and reduced strength, suggesting an important role of FUBP3 in both development and adult bone maintenance. Finally, I investigated the cellular phenotype underlying the skeletal changes seen with FUBP3 loss. These did not demonstrate a deficit in osteoblastic bone formation or osteoclastic bone resorption with FUBP3 deficiency. Nevertheless, the data presented in this thesis provide the first demonstration of a functional role of FUBP3 in the skeleton and confirm FUBP3 as the most likely causal gene at the 9q34.11 BMD, height and fracture GWAS locus.

Abstract

Flexible electricity networks continuously coordinate and optimize operations through ICT systems. An overlay data grid conveys information about the state of the electricity grid, as well as the status of demand and production of electricity in households and industry. Data is thus the basis for decisions that affect electricity costs and availability of assets on the electricity grid. It is crucial that these decisions are formed and monitored according to a well-defined governance model. No such data governance model exists today. In this paper, we focus on the central role of virtual power plants in flexible electricity networks. We define the problem of data governance in a virtual power plant, insisting on the issues linked to the inherent asymmetry of this system. We propose unionization as a framing device to reason about this issue. The central contribution of this paper is thus principles for a unionized data governance model for virtual power plants.

31. A future archaeology of the mobile telecoms industry

Abstract

In 2000, five consortia spent twenty billion pounds on UK radio spectrum licences for 3rd Generation mobile telephony or '3G'. They were investing in a future, in a specific story of the future, a story of ubiquitous wireless telecommunications. The thesis addresses questions raised in social studies of science and technology as to how such a future is made in everyday practices inside the industry, and how this future might be made otherwise. The research draws on Donna Haraway's method of 'interference' into the making of technoscientific knowledge. Rather than simply critique the future of the mobile telecoms industry, the thesis develops two methods that enact two different interferences into the making of the future in the industry. Both methods begin with a four month ethnography at a design studio of a major mobile phone manufacturer, extended interviews with key informants throughout the industry, and a substantial documentary archive. This forms a necessarily partial and fragmentary set of evidence from which multiple accounts may be reconstructed. The first method is ethnographic, and draws on the evidence to form an account of the industry and its futures situated close to London. The second method is archaeological, and draws on the evidence to form an account of the industry and its futures situated close to the 'Heart of Neolithic Orkney' World Heritage Site on the archipelago of Orkney, Scotland - a method of Future Archaeology. Through these two methods the thesis explores and demonstrates the effect of location and landscape on the making of the future in the mobile telecoms industry. And it demonstrates the important role of writing-as-method within social studies of science and technology.

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic has left a massive global death toll in its wake. Associated restrictions, precautions and lockdowns have disrupted daily routines, which has been associated with social isolation and major health implications for the world's youth. This paper shares young adults' visions for life beyond the pandemic as it relates to the prevention and management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). NCD Child hosted a global Twitter campaign for young adults, some of whom are living with NCDs, to express their reflections on life beyond the pandemic. Contributions were subjected to qualitative thematic analysis. 52 responses from the campaign described six main themes: Health system strengthening; Access to care; Issues of sustainability, including the environment and the economy; Human rights, equity, and social issues; Mental health, and NCD prevention. Young adults expressed optimism about postpandemic life and emphasized the importance of comprehensive intersectoral approaches to create resilient health systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In our discussions around the theme of solid fluids, we often had resort to everyday words, many of them of ancient derivation and rich in association. We decided to make a list of some of the words that came up most often – barring those that already figured as the principal characters of individual contributions – and to distribute among ourselves the task of writing a sort of mini-biography for each. The resulting lexicon with nineteen entries, ranging from ‘cloud’ and ‘concrete’ to ‘wave’ and ‘wood’, serves as a conclusion to the collection as a whole.

Abstract

CONTEXT: Pain is a major symptom in adults with fibrous dysplasia/McCune-Albright syndrome (FD/MAS) and response to current treatments, including bisphosphonates and standard analgesics (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opiates) is unpredictable. No studies have explored whether the type of pain is variable in this patient group. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of neuropathic-like pain in patients with FD/MAS. DESIGN: Retrospective, dual registry study. SETTING: Community. PATIENTS: FD/MAS online registries: the US-based Familial Dysautonomia Foundation (FDF) and the UK-based Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases (RUDY) study. INTERVENTION: Subjects completed questionnaires to evaluate the presence of features of neuropathic-like pain (painDETECT) and the impact on sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) and mental health (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale). Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the prevalence and associated burden of neuropathic-like pain. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Incidence of neuropathic, nociceptive, and unclear pain. RESULTS: Of 249 participants, one third experienced neuropathic-like pain. This group had statistically significantly (P < 0.001) worse mental well-being and sleep in comparison to those with predominately nociceptive pain. CONCLUSIONS: Neuropathic-like pain is common in patients with FD/MAS and associated with worse quality of life. Evaluation of pain in patients with FD/MAS should include assessment of neuropathic-like pain to guide personalized approaches to treatment and inform future research.
