Traditional light field rendering techniques, relying on dense sampling data, can faithfully reproduce photo-realistic and view-dependent effects such as reflection and refraction. However, they consume substantial memory resources for rapid access to light rays. Light field compression can significantly reduce disk storage requirements, but it cannot mitigate the memory overhead associated with rendering. We propose a novel rendering approach that combines the strengths of light field techniques and overcomes their memory limitations. By computing light ray parameters during the rasterization stage, our method enables rapid acquisition of light ray coordinates corresponding to pixels in the image plane. By incorporating a texture compression technology to compress light field images, our method can dramatically reduce memory consumption for dense light field rendering. Experimental evaluation on multiple light field scenes demonstrates that our method can effectively minimize memory usage to 12.5% compared to the baseline technique, without compromising visual quality. Moreover, it enables real-time rendering of photo-realistic and view-dependent effects within standard WebGL-supported browsers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spread of new survey strategies for the documentation and 3D reconstruction of complex cultural heritage sites enables the implementation of virtual web navigation systems that are useful for their virtual fruition. In particular, remote indoor/outdoor exploration enhances our knowledge of cultural heritage sites, even in inaccessible or difficult-to-visit states. However, the 3D data acquisition of complex sites for documentation remains a challenge, and the 3D virtual exploration of these datasets is often limited to property software implementations. This work describes the 3D documentation and construction of an indoor/outdoor web visualization system based on the WebGL open-source technology of a complex cultural heritage site. The case study regards the complex of "Santa Maria della Grotta" in Marsala (Italy), which is composed of a church that is located mostly underground and is connected to a human-dug hypogea on the site of a Punic necropolis. The aim of the work was to obtain detailed 3D documentation of the indoor and outdoor spaces through the integration of mobile laser scanning and aerial photogrammetry survey, and to develop a virtual web navigation system for the remote exploration of the site. The indoor/outdoor web navigation system provides users with a simple, web-browser-based 3D visualization, enabling the dissemination of the monuments' knowledge on the web through an economically sustainable solution based on open-source technologies. The rapid evolution of the urban landscape highlights the need to digitally document the state and historical transformations of heritage sites in densely urbanised areas through the combination of different geomatics survey approaches. Moreover, it is necessary to raise awareness of sites by developing strategies for their dissemination to a diverse audience through engaging, interactive, and accessible 3D web platforms. This work illustrates a methodology for the digital documentation and narration of a cultural heritage site through the implementation of a lightweight and replicable 3D navigation platform based on open-source technologies. Such a solution aims to be an easy-to-implement low-cost approach. The methodology is applied to the case study of the Farnese Castle in Piacenza (Italy), describing the data collection and documentation carried out with an in situ survey and illustrating how the resulting products were integrated into the web platform. The exploration functionalities of the platform and its potential for different types of audiences, from experts to users not familiar with 3D objects and geomatics products, were evaluated and documented on a ReadTheDocs website, allowing interested users to reproduce the project for other applications thanks to the template code available on GitHub.

Integrating a 3D geological model into the virtual Earth environment enables the display of the geological model on a larger scale, making the surrounding terrain and landform more intuitive, and improving the accuracy of geological research. Because the section analysis of 3D geological model can clearly show the geological structure and attribute information on a section, it is a popular analysis method for geologists. However, the existing methods based on Boolean operations have high requirements on the topological relationship of the model, and their efficiency and accuracy are not ideal when faced with complex 3D geological models. Meanwhile, traditional rendering-based methods can only obtain pixel-level sectional results, making measurement difficult. This paper proposes a cutting analysis algorithm for 3D geological model in virtual earth environment. This method utilizes hierarchical bounding volume (BVH) and ray intersection algorithm to extract formation boundary data, avoiding complex Boolean operations and improving the efficiency of section analysis. Furthermore, using these data to draw measurable geological section maps effectively solves the problem that the section results cannot be measured. This method can be used to quickly and effectively obtain a section diagram the conforms to the standard diagram legend, which can be directly used in the preparation of geological analysis reports. The feasibility of this method is verified by taking the section analysis of a complex 3D geological model in a certain area as an example. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The inventory of architectural heritage must deal with problems of managing and storing large amounts of information in heterogeneous formats, in addition to the necessity to organize and manage the information generated by the collaborative work between the different technicians involved in the documentation process. The solution involves the creation of a standardized base to plan and execute the digital recording of graphic documentation. To this end, an Information System of the Mudejar Architectural Heritage of Aragon is presented, with the purpose of integrating under a common support, all the documentation and graphic information available on the heritage element, with the purpose of preparing an inventory for its conservation and dissemination. The implementation of a tool that allows the dissemination and exploitation of information by different users through a web portal that integrates a cartographic viewer (WebGIS) and access to a point cloud manager based on WebGL is proposed. Complex demands in the field of cultural heritage preservation often require a multidisciplinary approach and substantial volumes of multimodal data integration and management. The conventional approach to tackling these issues revolves around using different H-BIM (historical building information model) solutions. This paper presents a prototype for a web platform that moves closer to the idea of a digital twin for physical cultural assets. Based on a light development framework, it is designed for online open access and features a versatile custom 3D viewer for intuitive interaction with the presented data. The concept requires a workflow similar to the video-game industry's 3D asset optimization to generate highly detailed 3D models and to facilitate the display of multilayered imaging data. The technological stack features a minimal MVC architecture framework and front-end stylesheets. It is designed to be independent of specific databases, enhancing portability for potential future open-source releases. Moreover, the platform employs WebGL libraries to create a dynamic 3D environment interaction. The capabilities of the web platform were tested in a case study regarding the documentation of an important 17th-century church in Romania. Further developments and current limitations of the platform are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the American West, wildfires and earthquakes are increasingly threatening the archaeological, historical, and tribal resources that define the collective identity and connection with the past for millions of Americans. The loss of said resources diminishes societal understanding of the role cultural heritage plays in shaping our present and future. This paper examines the viability of employing stationary and SLAM-based terrestrial laser scanning, close-range photogrammetry, automated surface change detection, GIS, and WebGL visualization techniques to enhance the preservation of cultural resources in California. Our datafication approach combines multi-temporal remote sensing monitoring of historic features with legacy data and collaborative visualization to document and evaluate how environmental threats affect built heritage. We tested our methodology in response to recent environmental threats from wildfire and earthquakes at Bodie, an iconic Gold Rush-era boom town located on the California and Nevada border. Our multi-scale results show that the proposed approach effectively integrates highly accurate 3D snapshots of Bodie’s historic buildings before/after disturbance, or post-restoration, with surface change detection and online collaborative visualization of 3D geospatial data to monitor and preserve important cultural resources at the site. This study concludes that the proposed workflow enhances the monitoring of at-risk California’s cultural heritage and makes a call to action to employ remote sensing as a pathway to advanced planning.

The diffuse data fruition of archaeological hypogeum sites still represents a challenge due to their limited accessibility and their preservation and maintenance issues. This implies that the fruition of these peculiar archaeological sites is often possible through digital reconstructions and interactive web navigation systems. The survey methodologies based on terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry allow making accurate and detailed digital reconstructions of these sites that are useful for virtual fruition purposes. In addition, many different systems can be used for remote web navigation and fruition. This work presents a possible solution for the virtual fruition of archaeological hypogea with a multiscale 3D web navigation system based on WebGL open-source technology. The system has been implemented for the Roman hypogeum of Crispia salvia, located in Marsala (southern Italy). The hypogeum belongs to the Archaeological Park of Lilibeo-Marsala and is considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries in this area for its extraordinary frescoes. Public accessibility of this site is limited because it is located outside the boundaries of the Archaeological Park, in the modern town, and covered by a residential building. In this case, the web navigation system adds an important contribution due to the limited real accessibility to the site. This work shows the framework for the construction of the web navigation system, where 3D surveys, digital reconstructions, 3D modeling, and web development are integrated. The choice of using an open-source technology for the web navigation system limits the costs of the process, and, at the same time, grants the web dissemination of site information.

Abstract In this digital era, technology has changed rapidly advancements, including the usage of augmented reality, which has become increasingly popular. The fusion of virtual and real-world elements by augmented reality creates memorable and dynamic user interactions. The emergence of these tools has made it simpler to integrate augmented reality into web applications. By leveraging raw WebGL and GLSL shaders, we aim to investigate and establish web-based augmented reality environments via the Three.js library. WebGL serves as the authoritative standard for 3D graphical rendering within web-based interfaces, whereas GLSL functions as the scripting language responsible for regulating the visual presentation produced by WebGL. Three.js serves as a JavaScript toolset designed to create interactive, web-based 3D graphics. In this study, an exploration of raw WebGL and GLSL shaders is conducted to analyze the augmented reality web experience. The implemented shaders are combined with Three.js and AR.js tools to construct a captivating augmented reality atmosphere. Furthermore, a comparison is made between the results of using GLSL and WebGL in the context of augmented reality on the web. The analysis demonstrates that GLSL outperforms WebGL in web-based augmented reality scenarios. GLSL shaders provide better performance for displaying virtual objects in augmented reality.

In the past few years, graphics processing units (GPUs) have become an indispensable part of modern computer systems, not only for graphics rendering but also for intensive parallel computing. Given that many tasks running on GPUs contain sensitive information, security concerns have been raised, especially about potential GPU information leakage. Previous works have shown such concerns by showing that attackers can use GPU memory allocations or performance counters to measure victim side effects. However, such an attack has a critical drawback that it requires a victim to install desktop applications or mobile apps yielding it uneasy to be deployed in the real world. In this paper, we solve this drawback by proposing a novel GPU-based side-channel Geo-Privacy inference attack on the WebGL framework, namely, GLINT (stands for Geo-Location Inference Attack). GLINT merely utilizes a lightweight browser extension to measure the time elapsed to render a sequence of frames on well-known map websites, e.g., Google Maps, or Baidu Maps. The measured stream of time series is then employed to infer geologically privacy-sensitive information, such as a search on a specific location. Upon retrieving the stream, we propose a novel online segmentation algorithm for streaming data to determine the start and end points of privacy-sensitive time series. We then combine the DTW algorithm and KNN algorithm on these series to conclude the final inference on a user’s geo-location privacy. We conducted real-world experiments to testify our attack. The experiments show that GeoInfer can correctly infer more than 83% of user searches regardless of the locations and map websites, meaning that our Geo-Privacy inference attack is accurate, practical, and robust. To counter this attack, we implemented a defense strategy based on Differential Privacy to hinder obtaining accurate rendering data. We found that this defense mechanism managed to reduce the average accuracy of the attack model by more than 70%, indicating that the attack was no longer effective. We have fully implemented GLINT and open-sourced it for future follow-up research.

The enhancement of heritage, both cultural and natural, must be considered as a resource for revitalizing the territory. In this context, Aragon has a great landscape and cultural heritage that is scattered throughout the territory and is not very accessible. It needs to be properly documented and inventoried as a means of activating new processes of knowledge, enhancement and use of rural development. This work is devoted to the creation of the Digital 3D Inventory of the Aragonese Mudejar Architectural Heritage, which includes buildings that currently have little graphic and imprecise documentation, since many of them are located in small towns of less than 500 inhabitants, with urban fabric of narrow streets. To carry out the registration, the use of drones to capture images and later the construction of the point cloud with photogrammetry, it is an adequate technical and economically sustainable solution since it deals with populations plagued by depopulation and with few resources. A generalized methodology is proposed to collect, store and disseminate 2D/3D geometric and geospatial documentation of inventoried buildings, providing more graphic information than traditional architectural inventories. As a novelty, for the dissemination of information, the creation of a web platform composed of a cartographic viewer (WebGIS) and a point cloud manager based on WebGL technology is proposed as a valuable tool to relate buildings with their environment, characteristic of great importance in the case of heritage located in rural areas.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.29.2022.8

True 3D modeling of geological bodies is one of the core problems of geological information systems. A new method of TetGen combined with WebGL is proposed to build 3D model for the problem of missing model attribute expression and inability of spatial analysis in 3D modeling. This method uses TetGen to build the model, which can preserve the detailed features and complete the 3D modeling and model optimization of the geological body with high efficiency. At the same time, a 3D visualization system of the 3D model is constructed with the help of WebGL, which realizes the display of the detail level model and completes the calculation of the basic parameters for the spatial analysis of the model using js. The 3D modeling method combined with visual spatial representation proposed in this paper not only realizes fast and accurate tetrahedral dissection of 3D models, but also completes the organization and management of model data, strengthens the spatial analysis capability of the model, and broadens the research and application of the model in the field of geology. The development of medical device technology has led to the rapid growth of medical imaging data. The reconstruction from two-dimensional images to three-dimensional volume visualization not only shows the location and shape of lesions from multiple views but also provides intuitive simulation for surgical treatment. However, the three-dimensional reconstruction process requires the high performance execution of image data acquisition and reconstruction algorithms, which limits the application to equipments with limited resources. Therefore, it is difficult to apply on many online scenarios, and mobile devices cannot meet high-performance hardware and software requirements. This paper proposes an online medical image rendering and real-time three-dimensional (3D) visualization method based on Web Graphics Library (WebGL). This method is based on a four-tier client-server architecture and uses the method of medical image data synchronization to reconstruct at both sides of the client and the server. The reconstruction method is designed to achieve the dual requirements of reconstruction speed and quality. The real-time 3D reconstruction visualization of large-scale medical images is tested in real environments. During the interaction with the reconstruction model, users can obtain the reconstructed results in real-time and observe and analyze it from all angles. The proposed four-tier client-server architecture will provide instant visual feedback and interactive information for many medical practitioners in collaborative therapy and tele-medicine applications. The experiments also show that the method of online 3D image reconstruction is applied in clinical practice on large scale image data while maintaining high reconstruction speed and quality. Recently, WebGL has been widely used in numerous web-based medical image viewers to present advanced imaging visualization. However, in the scenario of medical imaging, there are many challenges of computation time and memory consumption that limit the use of advanced image renderings, such as volume rendering and multiplanar reformation/reconstruction, in low-cost mobile devices. In this study, we propose a client-side rendering low-cost computation algorithm for common two- and three-dimensional medical imaging visualization implemented by pure JavaScript. Particularly, we used the functions of cascading style sheet transform and combinate with Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM)-related imaging to replace the application programming interface with high computation to reduce the computation time and save memory consumption while launching medical imaging interpretation on web browsers. The results show the proposed algorithm significantly reduced the consumption of central and graphics processing units on various web browsers. The proposed algorithm was implemented in an open-source web-based DICOM viewer BlueLight; the results show that it has sufficient rendering performance to display 3D medical images with DICOM-compliant annotations and has the ability to connect to image archive via DICOMweb as well. Keywords: WebGL, DICOMweb, Multiplanar reconstruction, Volume rendering, DICOM, JavaScript, Zero-footprint. Recent advances in Computer Science and the spread of internet connection have allowed specialists to virtualize complex environments on the web and offer further information with realistic exploration experiences. At the same time, the fruition of complex geospatial datasets (point clouds, Building Information Modelling (BIM) models, 2D and 3D models) on the web is still a challenge, because usually it involves the usage of different proprietary software solutions, and the input data need further simplification for computational effort reduction. Moreover, integrating geospatial datasets acquired in different ways with various sensors remains a challenge. An interesting question, in that respect, is how to integrate 3D information in a 3D GIS (Geographic Information System) environment and manage different scales of information in the same application. Integrating a multiscale level of information is currently the first step when it comes to digital twinning. It is needed to properly manage complex urban datasets in digital twins related to the management of the buildings (cadastral management, prevention of natural and anthropogenic hazards, structure monitoring, etc.). Therefore, the current research shows the development of a freely accessible 3D Web navigation model based on open-source technology that allows the visualization of heterogeneous complex geospatial datasets in the same virtual environment. This solution employs JavaScript libraries based on WebGL technology. The model is accessible through web browsers and does not need software installation from the user side. The case study is the new building of the University of Twente—Faculty of Geo-Information (ITC), located in Enschede (the Netherlands). The developed solution allows switching between heterogeneous datasets (point clouds, BIM, 2D and 3D models) at different scales and visualization (indoor first-person navigation, outdoor navigation, urban navigation). This solution could be employed by governmental stakeholders or the private sector to remotely visualize complex datasets on the web in a unique visualization, and take decisions only based on open-source solutions. Furthermore, this system can incorporate underground data or real-time sensor data from the IoT (Internet of Things) for digital twinning tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposed a Marching Trapezoidal Polyhedrons 3D modeling algorithm (MTPD) based on the cone-shaped spatial distribution of Doppler weather radar base data. In this algorithm, a trapezoidal polyhedron was introduced to replace the cube in the conventional modeling algorithm as a basic volume element for modelling. On the other hand, the hexahedral index or tetrahedral index was selected as the construction model for the 3D iso-surface based on the difference in spatial range for 3D radar modeling, to balance the efficiency of the algorithm and the precision of the modeling results. Based on this algorithm, a Doppler weather radar 3D visualization platform was developed using WebGL technology. The results revealed that the algorithm significantly improved efficiency without compromising the precision of 3D modeling when compared with the conventional modeling algorithm based on radar grid data. The durations for the algorithms were reduced by 1. 9 seconds and 0. 7 seconds, respectively under the hexahedral index mode and the tetrahedral index mode, while under the tetrahedral index mode, the 3D echo structure was more continuous with a higher level of precision. The Doppler weather 3D radar visualization platform based on the B/S architecture could provide a cross-platform 3D radar display, thus visualize the 3D structure of convective cloud effectively.
