- Abstract
The UK sixth carbon budget has recommended domestic biomass supply should increase to meet growing demand, planting a minimum of 30,000 hectares of perennial energy crops a year by 2035, with a view to establishing 700,000 hectares by 2050 to meet the requirements of the balanced net zero pathway. Miscanthus is a key biomass crop to scale up domestic biomass production in the United Kingdom. A cohesive land management strategy, based on robust evidence, will be required to ensure upscaling of miscanthus cultivation maximizes the environmental and economic benefits and minimizes undesirable consequences. This review examines research into available land areas, environmental impacts, barriers to uptake, and the challenges, benefits, and trade-offs required to upscale miscanthus production on arable land and grassland in the United Kingdom. Expansion of perennial biomass crops has been considered best restricted to marginal land, less suited to food production. The review identifies a trade-off between avoiding competition with food production and a risk of encroaching on areas containing high-biodiversity or high-carbon stocks, such as semi-natural grasslands. If areas of land suitable for food production are needed to produce the biomass required for emission reduction, the review indicates there are multiple strategies for miscanthus to complement long-term food security rather than compete with it. On arable land, a miscanthus rotation with a cycle length of 10–20 years can be employed as fallow period for fields experiencing yield decline, soil fatigue, or persistent weed problems. On improved grassland areas, miscanthus presents an option for diversification, flood mitigation, and water quality improvement. Strategies need to be developed to integrate miscanthus into farming systems in a way that is profitable, sensitive to local demand, climate, and geography, and complements rather than competes with food production by increasing overall farm profitability and

- Abstract
Differences between sexes contribute to variation in the levels of fasting glucose and insulin. Epidemiological studies established a higher prevalence of impaired fasting glucose in men and impaired glucose tolerance in women, however, the genetic component underlying this phenomenon is not established. We assess sex-dimorphic (73,089/50,404 women and 67,506/47,806 men) and sex-combined (151,188/105,056 individuals) fasting glucose/fasting insulin genetic effects via genome-wide association study meta-analyses in individuals of European descent without diabetes. Here we report sex dimorphism in allelic effects on fasting insulin at IRS1 and ZNF12 loci, the latter showing higher RNA expression in whole blood in women compared to men. We also observe sex-homogeneous effects on fasting glucose at seven novel loci. Fasting insulin in women shows stronger genetic correlations than in men with waist-to-hip ratio and anorexia nervosa. Furthermore, waist-to-hip ratio is causally related to insulin resistance in women, but not in men. These results position dissection of metabolic and glycemic health sex dimorphism as a steppingstone for understanding differences in genetic effects between women and men in related phenotypes.

The usage of three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US) during image-guided interventions for e.g. cardiac catheterization has increased recently. To accurately and consistently detect and track catheters or guidewires in the US image during the intervention, additional training of the sonographer or physician is needed. As a result, image-based catheter detection can be beneficial to the sonographer to interpret the position and orientation of a catheter in the 3D US volume. However, due to the limited spatial resolution of 3D cardiac US and complex anatomical structures inside the heart, image-based catheter detection is challenging. In this paper, we study 3D image features for image-based catheter detection using supervised learning methods. To better describe the catheter in 3D US, we extend the Frangi vesselness feature into a multi-scale Objectness feature and a Hessian element feature, which extract more discriminative information about catheter voxels in a 3D US volume. In addition, we introduce a multi-scale statistical 3D feature to enrich and enhance the information for voxel-based classification. Extensive experiments on several in-vitro and ex-vivo datasets show that our proposed features improve the precision to at least 69% when compared to the traditional multi-scale Frangi features (from 45% to 76% at a high recall rate 75%). As for clinical application, the high accuracy of voxel-based classification enables more robust catheter detection in complex anatomical structures.

3D ultrasound (US) transducers will improve the quality of image-guided medical interventions if an automated detection of the needle becomes possible. Image-based detection of the needle is challenging due to the presence of other echogenic structures in the acquired data, inconsistent visibility of needle parts and the low quality in US imaging. As the currently applied approaches for needle detection classify each voxel individually, they do not consider the global relations between the voxels. In this work, we introduce coherent needle labeling by using dense conditional random fields over a volume, along with 3D space-frequency features. The proposal includes long-distance dependencies in voxel pairs according to their similarities in the feature space and their spatial distance. This post-processing stage leads to better label assignment of volume voxels and a more compact and coherent segmented region. Our ex-vivo experiments based on measuring the F-1, F-2 and IoU scores show that the performance improves a significant 10-20 % compared with only using the linear SVM as a baseline for voxel classification.

Ultrasound-guided needle interventions are widely practiced in medical diagnostics and therapy, i.e. for biopsy guidance, regional anesthesia or for brachytherapy. Needle guidance using 2D ultrasound can be very challenging due to the poor needle visibility and the limited field of view. Since 3D ultrasound transducers are becoming more widely used, needle guidance can be improved and simplified with appropriate computer-aided analyses. In this paper, we compare two state-of-the-art 3D needle detection techniques: a technique based on line filtering from literature and a system employing Gabor transformation. Both algorithms utilize supervised classification to pre-select candidate needle voxels in the volume and then fit a model of the needle on the selected voxels. The major differences between the two approaches are in extracting the feature vectors for classification and selecting the criterion for fitting. We evaluate the performance of the two techniques using manually-annotated ground truth in several ex-vivo situations of different complexities, containing three different needle types with various insertion angles. This extensive evaluation provides better understanding on the limitations and advantages of each technique under different acquisition conditions, which is leading to the development of improved techniques for more reliable and accurate localization. Benchmarking results that the Gabor features are better capable of distinguishing the needle voxels in all datasets. Moreover, it is shown that the complete processing chain of the Gabor-based method outperforms the line filtering in accuracy and stability of the detection results. © (2015) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). - Abstract
Arundo donax has attracted interest as a potential bioenergy crop due to a high apparent productivity. It uses C3 photosynthesis yet appears competitive with C4 grass biomass feedstock's and grows in warm conditions where C4 species might be expected to be that productive. Despite this there has been no systematic study of leaf photosynthetic properties. This study determines photosynthetic and photorespiratory parameters for leaves in a natural stand of A. donax growing in southern Portugal. We hypothesise that A. donax has a high photosynthetic potential in high and low light, stomatal limitation to be small and intrinsic water use efficiency unusually low. High photosynthetic rates in A. donax resulted from a high capacity for both maximum Rubisco (Vc,max 117 μ1/4mol CO2 m-2 s-1) and ribulose-1:5-bisphosphate limited carboxylation rate (Jmax 213 μ1/4mol CO2 m-2 s-1) under light-saturated conditions. Maximum quantum yield for light-limited CO2 assimilation was also high relative to other C3 species. Photorespiratory losses were similar to other C3 species under the conditions of measurement (25%), while stomatal limitation was high (0.25) resulting in a high intrinsic water use efficiency. Overall the photosynthetic capacity of A. donax is high compared to other C3 species, and comparable to C4 bioenergy grasses.

- Abstract
Numerous genetic loci have been associated with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in Europeans. We now report genome-wide association studies of pulse pressure (PP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). In discovery (N = 74,064) and follow-up studies (N = 48,607), we identified at genome-wide significance (P = 2.7 × 10 -8 to P = 2.3 × 10 -13) four new PP loci (at 4q12 near CHIC2, 7q22.3 near PIK3CG, 8q24.12 in NOV and 11q24.3 near ADAMTS8), two new MAP loci (3p21.31 in MAP4 and 10q25.3 near ADRB1) and one locus associated with both of these traits (2q24.3 near FIGN) that has also recently been associated with SBP in east Asians. For three of the new PP loci, the estimated effect for SBP was opposite of that for DBP, in contrast to the majority of common SBP- and DBP-associated variants, which show concordant effects on both traits. These findings suggest new genetic pathways underlying blood pressure variation, some of which may differentially influence SBP and DBP.

- Abstract
Image-guided robots have been widely used for bone shaping and percutaneous access to interventional sites. However, due to high-accuracy requirements and proximity to sensitive nerves and brain tissues, the adoption of robots in inner-ear surgery has been slower. In this paper the authors present their recent work towards developing two image-guided industrial robot systems for accessing challenging inner-ear targets. Features of the systems include optical tracking of the robot base and tool relative to the patient and Kalman filter-based data fusion of redundant sensory information (from encoders and optical tracking systems) for enhanced patient safety. The approach enables control of differential robot positions rather than absolute positions, permitting simplified calibration procedures and reducing the reliance of the system on robot calibration in order to ensure overall accuracy. Lastly, the authors present the results of two phantom validation experiments simulating the use of image-guided robots in inner-ear surgeries such as cochlear implantation and petrous apex access.

- Abstract
Significant reductions in capital are possible through the optimisation of the entire development process. Single large savings can usually only be achieved through a downgrading of the scope, whereas the accumulated optimisation of all the small elements in the process can produce similar results without any sacrifice., Significant reductions in capital are possible through the optimisation of the entire development process. 49. THE AUSTRALIAN COTTON MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY.
- Author

Webster, R.J.
- Abstract
The article discusses development of cotton industry in Australia including new fibers, inventions and designs of machinery, dyes and finishes. After looking at the history of cotton industry from American Civil war to 1958, the author provides statistics on the annual consumption of raw cotton in Australia, number of factories, number of employees and their salaries, and production output. The author compares textile industry in Australia to other countries and declares that Australian's textile industry has carried all costs resulting from increased wages and other costs without increasing prices. The author expects expansion and suggests further study on market conditions, sales and advertising.
