Abstract

Conducting small asphalt repairs on airfields in remote locations can be technically and logistically challenging. An alternative to cold patch products is using an engineered polymer binder (EPB) mixed with recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). This paper presents the results of a laboratory evaluation of EPB with both wet and dry RAP. Compacted specimens were tested for rut resistance, indirect tensile strength (ITS), and Cantabro mass loss (ML). The results indicate that RAP mixed with EPB exhibited substantial rut resistance with ITS and ML similar to that of conventional dense-graded asphalt. Overall, the EPB and RAP blend appears to be a promising alternative for airfield repairs.

3. Use Longitudinal Data and Moving Average to Illustrate Effectiveness of Supplemental Instruction

Abstract

Texas A&M University-Commerce has implemented supplemental instruction (SI) for Calculus since the fall of 2013. A direct display of the ABC rates from fall 2005 to spring 2021 only presents fluctuation from semester to semester, and one can hardly deduce that the ABC rates are increasing. In this paper, the "moving average" technique is used to reveal the effectiveness of SI in improving the percentage of students earning a grade of A, B, or C (ABC rates) in Calculus. Our longitudinal data under the "moving average" also shows that the SI implementation increased the ABC rates of major ethnic groups.

Abstract

The Sodium iodide Active Background Rejection Experiment-South (SABRE-South) is a direct dark matter detector soon to be deployed in the Stawell gold mine, in Victoria, Australia. Monitoring of external environmental and experimental conditions, (temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, high voltage, and seismic vibration) is vital to ensure the data quality of the SABRE search for dark matter via direct detection. These parameters are generally non-time-critical in the range of Hz to a few kHz and constitute a slow control system. We present the design of a novel compact, industrial-grade, and self-contained slow control system for SABRE-South. This system, featuring innovative hardware and software architecture based on National instruments compact RIO (NI-cRIO) and LabVIEW can be scaled up at low-cost and is capable of implementing the functionalities available in high-end SCADA systems while maintaining the flexibility to integrate custom software code (i.e. C++, PYTHON) for bespoke interfacing needs., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

The Origins Space Telescope (Origins) traces our cosmic history, from the formation of the first galaxies and the rise of metals to the development of habitable worlds and present-day life. Origins does this through exquisite sensitivity to infrared radiation from ions, atoms, molecules, dust, water vapor and ice, and observations of extra-solar planetary atmospheres, protoplanetary disks, and large-area extragalactic fields. Origins operates in the wavelength range 2.8 to 588 microns and is 1000 times more sensitive than its predecessors due to its large, cold (4.5 K) telescope and advanced instruments. Origins was one of four large missions studied by the community with support from NASA and industry in preparation for the 2020 Decadal Survey in Astrophysics. 10. Fast and Efficient Stochastic Optimization for Analytic Continuation

Abstract

The analytic continuation of imaginary-time quantum Monte Carlo data to extract real-frequency spectra remains a key problem in connecting theory with experiment. Here we present a fast and efficient stochastic optimization method (FESOM) as a more accessible variant of the stochastic optimization method introduced by Mishchenko et al. and benchmark the resulting spectra with those obtained by the standard Maximum Entropy method for three representative test cases, in- cluding data taken from studies of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We generally find that our FESOM approach gives spectra similar to the Maximum Entropy results. In particular, while the Maximum Entropy method gives superior results when the quality of the data is strong, we find that FESOM is able to resolve fine structure with more detail when the quality of the data is poor. In addition, because of its stochastic nature, the method provides detailed information on the frequency dependent uncertainty of the resulting spectra, while the Maximum Entropy method does so only for the spectral weight integrated over a finite frequency region. We therefore believe that this variant of the stochastic optimization approach provides a viable alternative to the routinely used Maximum Entropy method especially for data with poor quality., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present a detailed report of microwave irradiation of ultra-narrow superconducting nanowires. In our nanofabricated circuits containing a superconducting NbSi nanowire, a dc blockade of current flow was observed at low temperatures below a critical voltage Vc, a strong indicator of the existence of quantum phase-slip (QPS) in the nanowire. We describe the results of applying microwaves to these samples, using a range of frequencies and both continuous-wave and pulsed drive, in order to search for dual Shapiro steps which would constitute an unambiguous demonstration of quantum phase-slip. We observed no steps, and our subsequent thermal analysis suggests that the electron temperature in the series CrO resistors was significantly elevated above the substrate temperature, resulting in sufficient Johnson noise to wash out the steps. To understand the system and inform future work, we have constructed a numerical model of the dynamics of the circuit for dc and ac bias (both continuous wave and pulsed drive signals) in the presence of Johnson noise. Using this model, we outline important design considerations for device and measurement parameters which should be used in any future experiment to enable the observation of dual Shapiro steps at experimentally accessible temperatures and thus lead to the development of a QPS-based quantum current standard., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures. Abstract

A synchrotron x-ray diffraction study of the crystallographic structure of PrO2 in the Jahn-Teller distorted phase is reported. The distortion of the oxygen sublattice, which was previously ambiguous, is shown to be a chiral structure in which neighbouring oxygen chains have opposite chiralities. A temperature dependent study of the magnetic excitation spectrum, probed by neutron inelastic scattering, is also reported. We draw on an article published in 1973 in this journal. We described how we taught "Geoff," a 6-year old boy with autism, an elementary form of sign language during the course of 24 one-hour sessions held over a 12-week period (Webster et al. in "J Autism Child Schizophr" 3:337-346, 1973; Fruchter in "Autism: new directions in research and education," pp 184-186, 1980). Here, we describe how it is that Geoff has maintained the vestiges of what we taught him (and indeed what he taught us) over the long span. This basic communication strategy has endured well and continues to contribute to his enjoyment of life.

Abstract

Siderite (FeCO3) has been detected in Gale Crater for the first time by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity and is seen in multiple samples in the Glen Torridon (GT) region. The identification of siderite is based on evolved gas analysis (EGA) data from the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument and X-ray diffraction (XRD) data from the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument. Curiosity descended off of the Vera Rubin ridge (VRR) into the Glen Torridon region on Sol 2300. Glen Torridon is of particular interest because a strong clay mineral signature had been detected by orbital instruments [1]. To date, four drilled samples have been collected at two different drill locations: Kilmarie and Aberlady from adjacent blocks at the base of the south side of VRR in the Jura member and Glen Etive 1 and 2 on the same block in the Knockfarril member.

Abstract

At what inclination does climbing begin? In this paper, we investigate the transition from walking to climbing in two species of parrot (Agapornis roseicollis and Nymphicus hollandicus) that are known to incorporate both their tail and their craniocervical system into the gait cycle during vertical climbing. Locomotor behaviors ranging in inclination were observed at angles between 0° and 90° for A. roseicollis, and 45°-85° degrees for N. hollandicus. Use of the tail in both species was observed at 45° inclination, and was joined at higher inclinations (> 65°) by use of the craniocervical system. Additionally, as inclination approached (but remained below) 90°, locomotor speeds were reduced while gaits were characterized by higher duty factors and lower stride frequency. These gait changes are consistent with those thought to increase stability. At 90°, A. roseicollis significantly increased its stride length, resulting in higher overall locomotor speed. Collectively these data demonstrate that the transition between horizontal walking and vertical climbing is gradual, incrementally altering several components of gait as inclinations increase. Such data underscore the need for further investigation into how exactly "climbing" is defined and the specific locomotor characteristics that differentiate this behavior from level walking.

Texas A&M University-Commerce has implemented supplemental instruction (SI) for Calculus since the fall of 2013. A direct display of the ABC rates from fall 2005 to spring 2021 only presents fluctuation from semester to semester, and one can hardly deduce that the ABC rates are increasing. In this paper, the "moving average" technique is used to reveal the effectiveness of SI in improving the percentage of students earning a grade of A, B, or C (ABC rates) in Calculus. 39. Improving canopy-snow unloading parameterizations by including observed interactions between meteorological variables

Abstract

Interception of snow by trees is the dominant control on snow accumulation patterns in forest environments but is notoriously difficult to observe and model. In this work, we use time-lapse photography to create a timeseries of snow unloading to link with local meteorological measurements to better understand how snow unloads from the canopy.Our results support previous studies that air temperature drives unloading when temperatures are above 0 ºC. However, we found that below 0°C multiple variables interact when unloading occurs. For example, unloading occurs when shortwave radiation exceeds 400 Wm-2 for at least one hour, even while air temperatures remain negative. While it is well known that shortwave radiation heats canopy elements, it is rarely included in unloading parameterizations. Additionally, when air temperatures were below -3ºC, wind speeds as low as 2 to 4 ms-1 could unload snow, but wind speeds greater than 5 ms-1 were needed when temperatures were warmer than -3ºC. This can be explained by the greater cohesivity of snow at temperatures above -3ºC. The concept of snow cohesion changing with temperature is often included in the loading aspect of models, but not considered in the unloading counterpart.As a result of these observations, we adapted existing unloading parameterizations to account for the relationships between air temperature, wind speed, and incoming solar radiation statistically. 40. Wintertime tree surface temperature dynamics in boreal and sub-alpine forests revealed by thermal infrared imaging

Abstract

Vegetation surface temperature is a critical state variable of forest snow and land surface models. During winter, it plays a key role in modulating energy fluxes between atmosphere, canopy air space, and sub-canopy snowpack. Understanding these surface temperature dynamics spatially and temporally is becoming increasingly important as recent model developments have become more centred around resolving snow-vegetation interactions at the sub-tree scale.Here, we present an analysis of wintertime tree surface temperatures which were derived from ground-based thermal infrared (ThIR) images. Images were acquired at up to hourly intervals over full diurnal cycles in boreal and sub-alpine forests to document vertical and azimuth surface temperature distributions within the forest under varying meteorological conditions.Our observations show that tree temperatures could be both warmer and cooler than air temperature providing detailed insight into the spatial distribution, timing, and magnitude of these variations. Direct insolation conditions quickly led to differential patterns of increased surface temperatures. Sun-exposed stems warmed up most and remained the warmest forest components throughout most of the night. However, in other places we observed nighttime forest surface temperatures well below air temperatures, particularly during clear-sky conditions and in the vicinity of snow (intercepted or on the ground). Under overcast conditions, forest surface temperatures were rather uniform and approximated air temperatures. 41. Forest snow processes in three dimensions: Linking a shortwave radiation transfer model and springtime canopy surface temperature patterns

Abstract

Forest snow dynamics are strongly controlled by three-dimensional canopy structure, particularly due to the way the forest interacts with the changing solar position. Exposure of the canopy to solar radiation increases canopy temperatures, enhancing longwave radiation at the snow surface. However, solar radiation is mostly absorbed in the upper canopy while it is the lower canopy that emits the bulk of longwave radiation to the snow surface. The three-dimensional nature of canopy radiative transfer processes have typically been under-investigated due to the difficulty in obtaining both solar radiation measurements within the canopy vertical profile and spatially explicit maps of canopy temperatures.To advance our understanding of and ability to predict 3D canopy energy balance processes, we present a 3D radiation transfer model that is capable of accurately predicting solar energy input at the canopy surface in structurally complex forest environments. As a first use case, we link predicted incoming solar radiation at the canopy surface to horizontal and vertical canopy temperature distributions estimated from both UAV-borne and ground-based thermal infrared imagery. Multiple thermal orthomosaics from repeat acquisitions throughout a daily solar cycle show linkages between solar radiation and changing canopy temperature distributions. .The results show that 3D estimates of solar radiation in forests will be an important tool in multi-layer canopy energy balance modelling. Abstract

The Origins Space Telescope will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. How did galaxies evolve from the earliest galactic systems to those found in the universe today? How do habitable planets form? How common are life-bearing worlds? To answer these alluring questions, Origins will operate at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths and offer powerful spectroscopic instruments and sensitivity three orders of magnitude better than that of Herschel, the largest telescope flown in space to date. After a 3 ½ year study, the Origins Science and Technology Definition Team will recommend to the Decadal Survey a concept for Origins with a 5.9-m diameter telescope cryo cooled to 4.5 K and equipped with three scientific instruments. A mid-infrared instrument (MISC-T) will measure the spectra of transiting exoplanets in the 2.8 – 20 μm wavelength range and offer unprecedented sensitivity, enabling definitive biosignature detections. The Far-IR Imager Polarimeter (FIP) will be able to survey thousands of square degrees with broadband imaging at 50 and 250 μm. The Origins Survey Spectrometer (OSS) will cover wavelengths from 25 – 588 μm, make wide-area and deep spectroscopic surveys with spectral resolving power R ~ 300, and pointed observations at R ~ 40,000 and 300,000 with selectable instrument modes. Origins was designed to minimize complexity. The telescope has a Spitzer-like architecture and requires very few deployments after launch. The cryo-thermal system design leverages JWST technology and experience. A combination of current-state-of-the-art cryocoolers and next-generation detector technology will enable Origins’ natural background limited sensitivity.

Abstract

In situ measurements of hydrogen, nitrogen, and chlorine radicals obtained through sunrise and sunset in the lower stratosphere during SPADE are compared to results from a photochemical model constrained by observed concentrations of radical precursors and environmental conditions. Models allowing for heterogeneous hydrolysis of N2O5 on sulfate aerosols agree with measured concentrations of NO, NO2, and ClO throughout the day, but fail to account for high concentrations of OH and HO2 observed near sunrise and sunset. The morning burst of [OH] and [HO2] coincides with the rise of [NO] from photolysis of NO2, suggesting a new source of HOxthat photolyzes in the near UV (350 to 400 nm) spectral region. A model that allows for the heterogeneous production of HNO2 results in an excellent simulation of the diurnal variations of [OH] and [HO2].

Abstract

There has been a revival of research that studies the subjective effects of psychedelic drugs on humans. Areas of health science have been studying their possible therapeutic benefits, and psychological measurement instruments are being developed as the studies progress. However, these instruments currently suffer criticism regarding their number and evidence of psychometric quality. This study aims to review which psychometric instruments are available to assess subjective states induced by psychedelics. We systematically searched five databases (Web of Science, Academic Search Premier, EMBASE, CINAHL and PubMed) using psychometrics and psychedelics related terms identifying studies published from 1990 to 2021. Of 857 articles generated from the systematic-search, fifteen met our criteria and were included in the review, evaluating nine instruments: MEQ, 5D-ASC, HRS, PSI, EDI, CEQ, EBI, EDI and PIQ. Eight dealing with phenomenological aspects of the psychedelic experience and one as a screening tool for psychotic or manic episode. The purpose of each instrument, the number of items in each version, the type of scale and their elaboration process were described. The number of instruments used in psychedelic research is growing steadily, but there are still many other parts of the psychedelic experience that lack measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
