ABSTRACT Tamarind is used in the food and pharmaceutical industry, and its seed is the main means for the reproduction of this species, thus justifying studies that ensure its post-harvest viability. This research aimed to study the thermodynamic properties of tamarind seeds as a function of the equilibrium moisture content. The experimental data of the water activities were obtained by the indirect static method. The Cavalcanti Mata model was used to determine the thermodynamic properties of tamarind seeds, as it was the model that best fitted the experimental data of the desorption isotherms. The results showed that the thermodynamic properties are influenced by the moisture content and temperature, with an increase in the energy required to remove water from the product with a decrease in moisture content. The net isosteric heat of desorption increases with a reduction of moisture content ranging from 2,618.85 to 2,510.25 kJ kg−1 for the moisture content range of 10.52 to 21.10% db. The latent heat of vaporization, the differential enthalpy, and the Gibbs free energy increase with a reduction of the moisture content of tamarind seeds.

ABSTRACT The knowledge of hygroscopicity is essential for the storage of tamarind seeds, but there is a limitation of a judicious statistical parameter to define the best mathematical model to adjust the isotherms of plant products. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the desorption isotherms of tamarind seeds and test the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Schwarz Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for choosing the best mathematical model. Seeds with an initial moisture content of 21.00 ± 0.10% dry basis (db) were dried at 45 °C until they reached moisture contents of 17.27 ± 0.10, 15.04 ± 0.16, 14.14 ± 0.06, 12.41 ± 0.17, and 10.52 ± 0.12% db. The water activity of the product was determined by the static-indirect method at temperatures of 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C. Mathematical models frequently used to predict the isotherms of plant products were adjusted to the experimental data. The Cavalcanti Mata model is recommended to estimate the desorption isotherms of tamarind seeds because it presents better adjustments. The AIC and BIC criteria contribute to the choice of the model to predict the desorption isotherms of tamarind seeds.

ABSTRACT Drying is the most widely used process to ensure the quality and stability of plant products. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effective water diffusivity and activation energy in grain sorghum during drying at different temperatures and initial moisture contents. Sorghum grains (cultivar DeKalb 640) were harvested with an initial moisture content of 0.49 kg water kg−1 dry matter. The effective diffusion coefficient was determined from different initial moisture contents of approximately 0.49, 0.40, 0.31, and 0.23 kg water kg−1 dry matter. Grains with different moisture contents were dried under four temperature conditions of 40, 60, 80, and 100 °C on perforated trays. The spherical geometry model was used for liquid diffusion. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme (four moisture contents × four temperatures), with three replications. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression using the statistical software SISVAR®. Sorghum grain diffusivity increases at the same drying temperature as an increase of the initial moisture content of grains. The activation energy was higher for grains with higher initial moisture content, with values of 27.32, 26.75, 22.55, and 20.94 kJ mol−1, respectively.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to fit different mathematical models to the experimental data on drying of baru fruits (Dipteryx alata Vogel), determine and assess the effective diffusion coefficient, as well as obtain the activation energy and thermodynamic properties for the drying process under different air temperature conditions. Baru fruits with an initial moisture content of 0.429 ± 0.044 (dry basis, db) were dried in a forced air ventilation oven under four temperature conditions (40, 60, 80, and 100 °C) until reaching a moisture content of 0.065 ± 0.018 (decimal db). These data were fitted to mathematical models frequently used to represent the drying of vegetal products. The Logarithmic model presented the best fit to describe the phenomenon. The effective diffusion coefficient increased as temperature increased, being described by the Arrhenius equation, with an activation energy of 37.64 kJ mol-1. Enthalpy and entropy decreased, while Gibbs free energy increased as drying temperature increased.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine and evaluate the thermodynamic properties for different equilibrium moisture contents in baru fruits (Dipteryx alata Vogel), using the direct static method to obtain the experimental data. The Modified Halsey model was used to determine the thermodynamic properties of baru fruits. Results concluded that thermodynamic properties are influenced by moisture content. The water vaporization latent heat increases with the decrease in equilibrium moisture content. The baru fruit desorption process is controlled by enthalpy. Gibbs free energy is positive for the temperatures studied with the increase over desorption, which describes a non-spontaneous process.

ABSTRACT Biofortified sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is one of the foods with the highest contributions of carotenoids in the diet, especially provitamin A carotenoids. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the drying kinetics of the biofortified sweet potato pulp using the Akaike (AIC) and Schwarz's Bayesian (BIC) information criteria for model selection, as well as determine the effective diffusion coefficient and activation energy under different drying conditions. The biofortified sweet potatoes were sliced into chips and submitted to drying in an air circulation oven at 1.0 m s−1 at temperatures of 45, 55, 65, and 75 °C until constant mass. The mathematical models Wang and Singh, Verma, Thompson, Page, Newton, Midilli et al., logarithmic, Henderson and Pabis, two-term exponential, two-term, diffusion approach, frequently used to predict the drying of vegetal products, were adjusted to the data. The Wang and Singh model was selected to represent the drying of the biofortified sweet potato pulp by exhibiting the best adjustment for most conditions. The AIC and BIC criteria were suitable for selecting the Wang and Singh model. The effective diffusion coefficient increased as drying air temperature increase and the activation energy for liquid diffusion was 29.18 kJ mol−1.

ABSTRACT One of the main phytosanitary problems in major crops are phytonematodes, which are characterised as difficult to control. In view of this, biocontrol, through the use of biological agents, has become a driving force in controlling these pathogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the compatibility of microorganisms, and detect the possibility of antagonistic effects, influence on growth, or synergistic action when microorganisms are jointly applied to crops. Microbiological analyses were carried out to observe the interaction of the fungus Trichoderma asperellum with the bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus methylotrophicus. It was found that the interaction between the genera Bacillus and Trichoderma did not promote any increase in the fresh or dry weight of the roots or shoots of the soya plants; however, based on the results of the microbiological analysis of the fungi and bacteria, the interaction was found to be promising, particularly in the evaluation carried out on the seventh day. Considering the number of viable spores, the interaction between B. subtilis + T. asperellum showed better results than B. methylotrophicus + T. asperellum. The Interaction between the genera Bacillus and Trichoderma showed the potential for joint use in the biological control of the soya bean.

O tungue é uma espécie que apresenta potencial para a produção de biodiesel. Para um armazenamento seguro, há necessidade de conhecer sua higroscopicidade. Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar as isotermas de dessorção, a partir da recomendação de um modelo matemático, definir os teores de água seguro para armazenamento e obter o calor isostérico, para as sementes de tungue. Para obtenção do teor de água de equilíbrio higroscópico, foi utilizado o método estático, utilizando-se 20 g de sementes, envolvidas por um tecido permeável e colocadas no interior dos dessecadores, contendo soluções de sais, em câmara tipo BOD com temperaturas de 20ºC, 25ºC, 30ºC e 35ºC; a atividade de água variou entre 0,14 e 0,812 decimal. Para ajuste dos modelos matemáticos, utilizaram-se os critérios de informação de Akaike (AIC), e, para auxiliar na escolha do melhor modelo, critérios de informação bayesiano de Schwarz (BIC). Dentre os modelos testados, foi selecionado o de Chung-Pfost, para representar as isotermas de dessorção das sementes de tungue. Os valores de calor isostérico integral de dessorção na faixa do teor de água de equilíbrio de 2,08 a 8,35 (% b.s.) variaram de 3754 kJ kg-1 a 2555 kJ kg-1.

Condiments and culinary supplements are subjected to long-term storage and may undergo physical, chemical, and biological changes that can influence their quality. Thus, the objective of the present study was to analyze the drying kinetics of rose pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) fruits in an oven with forced air circulation at different temperatures, namely, 45, 55, 65, and 75°C, and determine the effective diffusion coefficient and activation energy using different mathematical models. Furthermore, the effects of the different drying temperatures were analyzed for external color parameters and yield of essential oil contents by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer. Of the ten models used for fitting, Thompson’s model was one with the best fitting to represent the drying of rose pepper fruits. The diffusion coefficient increases with the elevation of drying air temperature, described by the Arrhenius equation, with activation energy of 53.579 kJ·mol−1. The color of the fruits decreased in lightness (L∗) with the increase in temperature. Of the thirty-eight terpenes identified, α-pinene and cis-ocimene were the most abundant, with the overall highest yield being found at a drying temperature of 45°C.

Abstract Dementia is a clinical state characterized by loss of function in multiple cognitive domains. It is a costly disease in terms of both personal suffering and economic loss. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the term now preferred over Picks disease to describe the spectrum of non-Alzheimers dementias characterized by focal atrophy of the frontal and anterior temporal regions of the brain. The prevalence of FTD is considerable, though specific figures vary among different studies. It occurs usually in an age range of 35–75 and it is more common in individuals with a positive family history of dementia. The risk factors associated with this disorder include head injury and family history of FTD. Although there is some controversy regarding the further syndromatic subdivision of the different types of FTD, the three major clinical presentations of FTD include: 1) a frontal or behavioral variant (FvFTD), 2) a temporal, aphasic variant, also called Semantic dementia (SD), and 3) a progressive aphasia (PA). These different variants differ in their clinical presentation, cognitive deficits, and affected brain regions. Patients with FTD should have a neuropsychiatric assessment, neuropsychological testing and neuroimaging studies to confirm and clarify the diagnosis. Treatment for this entity consists of behavioral and pharmacological approaches. Medications such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, mood stabilizer and other novel treatments have been used in FTD with different rates of success. Further research should be directed at understanding and developing new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to improve the patients' prognosis and quality of life.

Abstract Catatonia is a common syndrome that was first described in the literature by Karl Kahlbaum in 1874. The literature is still developing and remains unclear on many issues, especially classification, diagnosis, and pathophysiology. Clinicians caring for psychiatric patients with catatonic syndromes continue to face many dilemmas in diagnosis and treatment. We discuss many of the common problems encountered in the care of a catatonic patient, and discuss each problem with a review of the literature. Focus is on practical aspects of classification, epidemiology, differential diagnosis, treatment, medical comorbidity, cognition, emotion, prognosis, and areas for future research in catatonic syndromes.

Syntheses and mechanisms of two dinuclear Co-polypyridyl catalysts for the H 2 evolution reaction (HER) were reported and compared to their mononuclear analogue (R1). In both catalysts, two di-(2,2'-bipyridin-6-yl)-methanone units were linked by either 2,2'-bipyridin-6,6'-yl or pyrazin-2,5-yl. Complexation with Co II gave dinuclear compounds bridged by pyrazine (C2) or bipyridine (C1). Photocatalytic HER gave turnover numbers (TONs) of up to 20000 (C2) and 7000 (C1) in water. Electrochemically, C1 was similar to the R1, whereas C2 showed electronic coupling between the two Co centers. The E(Co II/I ) split by 360 mV into two separate waves. Proton reduction in DMF was investigated for R1 with [HNEt 3 ](BF 4 ) by simulation, foot of the wave analysis, and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) with in-line detection of H 2 . All methods agreed well with an (E)ECEC mechanism and the first protonation being rate limiting (≈10 4  m -1  s -1 ). The second reduction was more anodic than the first one. pK a values of around 10 and 7.5 were found for the two protonations. LSV analysis with H 2 detection for all catalysts and acids with different pK a values [HBF 4 , pK a (DMF)≈3.4], intermediate {[HNEt 3 ](BF 4 ), pK a (DMF)≈9.2} to weak [AcOH, pK a (DMF)≈13.5] confirmed electrochemical H 2 production, distinctly dependent on the pK a values. Only HBF 4 protonated Co I intermediates. The two metals in the dualcore C2 cooperated with an increase in rate to a competitive 10 5  m -1  s -1 with [HNEt 3 ](BF 4 ). The overpotential decreased compared to R1 by 100 mV. Chronoamperometry established high stabilities for all catalysts with TON lim of 100 for R1 and 320 for C1 and C2., (© 2022 The Authors. The reductive part of artificial photosynthesis, the reduction of protons into H₂, is a two electron two proton process. It corresponds basically to the reactions occurring in natural photosystem I. We show in this review a selection of involved processes and components which are mandatory for making this light-driven reaction possible at all. The design and the performances of the water reduction catalysts is a main focus together with the question about electron relays or sacrificial electron donors. It is shown how an original catalyst is developed into better ones and what it needs to move from purely academic homogeneous processes to heterogeneous systems. The importance of detailed mechanistic knowledge obtained from kinetic data is emphasized.

Cobalt complexes are well-known catalysts for photocatalytic proton reduction in water. Macrocyclic tetrapyridyl ligands (pyrphyrins) and their Co II complexes emerged in this context as a highly efficient class of H 2 evolution catalysts. On the basis of this framework, a new macrocyclic Co II complex consisting of two keto-bridged bipyridyl units (Co diketo-pyrphyrin) is presented. The complex is synthesized along a convenient route, is well soluble in water, and shows high activity as a water reduction catalyst (WRC). In an aqueous system containing [Ru(bpy) 3 ]Cl 2 as a photosensitizer and NaAscO as a sacrificial electron donor, turnover numbers (TONs) of 2500 H 2 /Co were achieved. Catalysis is terminated by a limited electron supply and decomposition of the photosensitizer but not of the WRC, highlighting the distinct stability of Co diketo-pyrphyrin.

A series of eight new and three known cobalt polypyridyl-based hydrogen-evolving catalysts (HECs) with distinct electronic and structural differences are benchmarked in photocatalytic runs in water. Methylene-bridged bis-bipyridyl is the preferred scaffold, both in terms of stability and rate. For a cobalt complex of the tetradentate methanol-bridged bispyridyl-bipyridyl complex [Co II Br(tpy)]Br, a detailed mechanistic picture is obtained by combining electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and photocatalysis. In the acidic branch, a proton-coupled electron transfer, assigned to formation of Co III -H, is found upon reduction of Co II , in line with a pK a (Co III -H) of approximately 7.25. Subsequent reduction (-0.94 V vs. NHE) and protonation close the catalytic cycle. Methoxy substitution on the bipyridyl scaffold results in the expected cathodic shift of the reduction, but fails to change the pK a (Co III -H). In Central Europe, protected areas are too small to ensure survival of populations of large carnivores. In the surrounding areas, these species are often persecuted due to competition with game hunters. Therefore, understanding how predation intensity varies spatio-temporally across areas with different levels of protection is fundamental. We investigated the predation patterns of Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) on roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) in both protected areas and multi-use landscapes of the Bohemian Forest Ecosystem. Based on 359 roe and red deer killed by 10 GPS-collared lynx, we calculated the species-specific annual kill rates and tested for effects of season and lynx age, sex and reproductive status. Because roe and red deer in the study area concentrate in unprotected lowlands during winter, we modeled spatial distribution of kills separately for summer and winter and calculated-the probability of a deer killed by lynx and-the expected number of kills for areas with different levels of protection. Significantly more roe deer (46.05-74.71/year/individual lynx) were killed than red deer (1.57-9.63/year/individual lynx), more deer were killed in winter than in summer, and lynx family groups had higher annual kill rates than adult male, single adult female and subadult female lynx. In winter the probability of a deer killed and the expected number of kills were higher outside the most protected part of the study area than inside; in summer, this probability did not differ between areas, and the expected number of kills was slightly larger inside than outside the most protected part of the study area. This indicates that the intensity of lynx predation in the unprotected part of the Bohemian Forest Ecosystem increases in winter, thus mitigation of conflicts in these areas should be included as a priority in the lynx conservation strategy.

Objectives: To determine whether epigenetic markers predict dimensional ratings of depression in maltreated children., Method: A genome-wide methylation study was completed using the Illumina 450K BeadChip array in 94 maltreated and 96 healthy nontraumatized children with saliva-derived DNA. The 450K BeadChip does not include any methylation sites in the exact location as sites in candidate genes previously examined in the literature, so a test for replication of prior research findings was not feasible., Results: Methylation in 3 genes emerged as genome-wide-significant predictors of depression: DNA-Binding Protein Inhibitor ID-3 (ID3); Glutamate Receptor, Ionotropic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) 1 (GRIN1); and Tubulin Polymerization Promoting Protein (TPPP) (p < 5.0 × 10(-7), all analyses). These genes are all biologically relevant with ID3 involved in the stress response, GRIN1 involved in neural plasticity, and TPPP involved in neural circuitry development. Methylation in CpG sites in candidate genes were not predictors of depression at significance levels corrected for whole genome testing, but maltreated and control children did have significantly different β values after Bonferroni correction at multiple methylation sites in these candidate genes (e.g., BDNF, NR3C1, FKBP5)., Conclusions: This study suggests that epigenetic changes in ID3, GRIN1, and TPPP genes, in combination with experiences of maltreatment, may confer risk for depression in children. The study adds to a growing body of literature supporting a role for epigenetic mechanisms in the pathophysiology of stress-related psychiatric disorders. Although epigenetic changes are frequently long lasting, they are not necessarily permanent. Background: Child abuse is highly prevalent and associated with increased risk for a range of health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, psychiatric disorders, and other health problems. Little is currently known about the mechanism by which early adversity confers risk for health problems later in life., Purpose: To determine if there are epigenetic differences associated with child maltreatment that may help explain association between adverse childhood experiences and later health problems., Methods: As part of a study examining genetic and environmental factors associated with depression, saliva DNA specimens were collected on 96 maltreated children removed from their parents due to abuse or neglect and 96 demographically matched control children between 2003 and 2010. In 2011, the Illumina 450K BeadChip was used on stored DNA specimens and analyzed to examine whole-genome methylation differences between maltreated and control children., Results: After controlling for multiple comparisons, maltreated and control children had significantly different methylation values at 2868 CpG sites (p<5.0 × 10(-7), all sites; average methylation difference per site=17%; range=1%-62%). The gene set contained numerous markers of diseases and biological processes related to the health problems associated with early childhood adversity., Conclusions: Although replication is required, this study suggests that epigenetic mechanisms may be associated with risk for health problems later in life in maltreated children. This study lays the groundwork for future studies examining health and methylation measures to further characterize the role of epigenetic mechanisms in conferring risk for medical problems in individuals with histories of early adversity., (Copyright © 2013 American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The relationship between the evoked responses (ERPs/ERFs) and the event-related changes in EEG/MEG power that can be observed during sentence-level language comprehension is as yet unclear. This study addresses a possible relationship between MEG power changes and the N400m component of the event-related field. Whole-head MEG was recorded while subjects listened to spoken sentences with incongruent (IC) or congruent (C) sentence endings. A clear N400m was observed over the left hemisphere, and was larger for the IC sentences than for the C sentences. A time-frequency analysis of power revealed a decrease in alpha and beta power over the left hemisphere in roughly the same time range as the N400m for the IC relative to the C condition. A linear regression analysis revealed a positive linear relationship between N400m and beta power for the IC condition, not for the C condition. No such linear relation was found between N400m and alpha power for either condition. The sources of the beta decrease were estimated in the LIFG, a region known to be involved in semantic unification operations. One source of the N400m was estimated in the left superior temporal region, which has been related to lexical retrieval. We interpret our data within a framework in which beta oscillations are inversely related to the engagement of task-relevant brain networks. The source reconstructions of the beta power suppression and the N400m effect support the notion of a dynamic communication between the LIFG and the left superior temporal region during language comprehension., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
