8. 'Feeling Bad' or 'Being Bad?' The Trapping Effect of Effort in Academic Failure in a Confucian Cultural Context

Abstract

A predicament faced by students who fail academically in East Asian Confucian societies, such as Taiwan, is being obscured by students' outstanding performances in international academic assessments. This article proposes that there is a trapping effect of effort for these students. They are trapped in a dilemma between "feeling bad" (emotional distress) for exerting too much effort and "being bad" (negative image) for making little effort. Such a dilemma may be worse in the domain of academic achievement than in non-academic domains like the arts, with the former being more directly related to children's dutiful fulfilment of parental expectations. Two consecutive studies--a scenario experiment with 700 subjects and a survey on past experiences of failure with a sample of 190--were conducted. The results supported our hypothesis that effort becomes a double-edged sword for students who failed. They are more likely to either "feel bad" or "be bad" after failing academically compared to performing poorly on non-academic activities. Implications of the findings are further discussed.

Abstract

Previous studies of achievement motivations have focused on the patterns of self-attribution with little consideration of the effects of achievement goals. In the present study, the authors investigated Taiwanese students' self-attribution for achievement goals mainly on the basis of autonomous interest (i.e., personal goals) and on social expectation (i.e., vertical goals). The authors administered self-developed scenario simulation questionnaires to undergraduate and graduate participants in 2 studies. The results showed that (a) in pursuit of personal goals, participants tended to attribute success to internal factors and failure to external factors and (b) in pursuit of vertical goals, participants tended to attribute their failure to lack of effort. The authors further discuss the theoretical implications of these findings under a cultural context. 15. The Effect of Parents'S Fulfillment of Role Obligation On Children'S Gratitude : Filial Belief As Moderators

Abstract

Although filial piety to parents was regard as unconditional positive duties in Chinese parents' fulfillment of role obligation (taking care of children) on children's gratitude to parents (Hwang, 1998, 2005), there were little empirical evidence. Previous studies showed that Chinese interpersonal duties for family members were not affected by the affective quality of relationships (Wei, 2001a; Wei, 2001b). But when parents violated their role obligation, they were less likely to be perceived as good parents and received children's help (Wei, 2011). This study aimed to investigate the effect of fulfillment of parental duties on childrenu2019s gratitude. It was inferred that those who fulfilled parental duties received more gratitude from their children. Furthermore, filial beliefs moderated the relationship between parents' fulfillment of role obligation and children's gratitude to parents. Participants had to read simulated scenarios describing how parents took care of their children, then rated the degree of gratitude children felt toward parents. Filial belief scale (Chen, 2018) measured participants' belief of life origin (one's life originating from parents) and unity view of life (one's life uniting with parents' life). The results indicated that parents who fulfilled parental duties received more gratitude from their children. Both belief of life origin and unity view of life positively predicted children's gratitude to parents.Filial piety is based reciprocity. As parents get older and ask children to take care of them, those who took good care of children would be reciprocated with good care. Therefore, children would not respect and help parents unconditionally.

16. Implicit Gender Stereotypes Among Heterosexual and Non-Heterosexual people in Taiwan

Abstract

This study aimed to compare differences in gender traits and housework division stereotypes between heterosexual and non-heterosexual people. It was hypothesized that biological genders, sexual orientations and gender socialization outcomes held significant interactions on gender traits and housework division stereotypes.This study gathered 179 valid samples, with 44 heterosexual females, 40 heterosexual males, 51 non-heterosexual females and 44 non-heterosexual males. There were significant interactions effects among biological genders, sexual orientations, types of gender socialization on gender traits and housework division stereotypes.
