Urbanization has a significant influence on precipitation, but existing studies lack the spatial and temporal heterogeneity analysis of its impact on precipitation in urban areas at different levels. This study investigates the spatial heterogeneity of precipitation and the influencing factors on six dimensions in 156 urban areas in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2018, utilizing a mixed-methods analytical approach. The results show that the change in the natural factor layer caused by urbanization was the most important factor, affecting urban precipitation variation in summer and over the whole year, accounting for 34.5% and 10.7%, respectively. However, the contribution of the urban thermal environment in summer cannot be ignored, and the change in the urban thermal environment caused by human activities in winter is an important influencing factor. When considering the optimal combination of factors, relative humidity was shown to be significant in the spatial variations in precipitation during summer, which contributed 26.2%, followed by human activity as indicated by night-time light intensity. Over the whole year, aerosol optical depth makes the substantial contribution of 21.8% to urban precipitation change. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays a range of important roles such as in inflammation, immune response, and cell growth regulation. Here, we aimed to assess the potential influence of the IL-6 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1800796 on the concentration/dose (C/D) ratios of tacrolimus and donor liver function in Chinese liver transplant patients. A total of 331 liver transplant patients were included in this study. The C/D ratios and the ALT, AST, T-BIL, ALP, and GGT levels were analyzed at different time points in patients with and without the IL-6 rs1800796 SNP. The IL-6 rs1800796 polymorphism in recipients was found to be correlated with the C/D ratios of tacrolimus at months 2 to month 6 after transplantation. Also, the rs1800796 SNP in donors was found to influence liver function (shown in the data of ALT, AST, T-BIL, ALP and GGT) in recipients at the early post-transplant stage after transplantation. Fructus polygoni orientalis (FPO) is widely used in clinical practice in China, especially in treatment of liver diseases including viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis, and liver cirrhosis. However, its pharmacokinetic (PK) alterations in liver fibrotic rats have rarely been reported. To study whether taxifolin, one of the main flavonoids in FPO can be absorbed into blood after oral administration of FPO extract and to compare the differences in pharmacokinetic parameters of taxifolin to normal and liver fibrotic rats induced by porcine serum (PS), a UPLC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for determination of taxifolin in rat plasma using puerarin as the internal standard (IS). All validation parameters met the acceptance criteria according to regulatory guidelines. The results indicated that after treatment of rats with PS alone for 12 weeks, the liver fibrotic model group was built successfully. The taxifolin can be absorbed into the blood after oral administration of the FPO extract. The Cmax of taxifolin was 1940 ± 502.2 ng/mL and 2648 ± 208.5 ng/mL (p < 0.05), the AUC0∼t of taxifolin was 4949.7 ± 764.89 h·ng/mL and 6679.9 ± 734.26 h·ng/mL (p < 0.05), the AUC0∼∞ of taxifolin was 5049.4 ± 760.7 and 7095.2 ± 962.3 h·ng/mL (p < 0.05), and the mean residence time (MRT) of taxifolin was 2.46 ± 0.412 h and 3.17 ± 0.039 h (p < 0.05) in the normal and fibrotic model groups, respectively. These results confirmed that the pharmacokinetic parameters of taxifolin are altered in liver fibrosis, manifested as Cmax, AUC0∼t, AUC0∼∞, and the mean residence time (MRT). Objectives: There is growing concern about mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations with long-term NRTI exposure in HIV-1 infected children.Methods: Twenty-four HIV-1 infected children who started ART more than 2 years earlier who had an excellent virological response and had not changed their regimen were enrolled retrospectively. Their corresponding PBMCs in 2009 (T1), 2010 (T2) and 2013 (T3) were included. Sequencing of the entire mtDNA using next-generation sequencing revealed the spectrum of mtDNA variants.Results: The trend showed that the number of mtDNA mutations during ART occurred as T1 < T2 < T3 (P = 0.086). Interestingly, the numbers of whole mtDNA mutations at T3 (median 41, range 24-62) were significantly greater than at T1 (34, 25-46, P = 0.029). A positive correlation was found between total mtDNA mutations and treatment time (r = 0.352, P = 0.002). During the observation period, mtDNA mutations more frequently occurred in the D-loop, cytochrome b (CYTB) and 12S rRNA regions. The heteroplasmic ratio of T3 was higher than that of T1 in CYTB and 12S rRNA (P = 0.034 and P = 0.042, respectively). High heteroplasmic population levels were found at nt 263 (A263G, D-loop) and nt 8860 (A8860G, ATPase6). A significant difference in heteroplasmy between T1, T2 and T3 occurred at nt 14783 (T14783C, CYTB, P = 0.048, T3 > T2 > T1).Conclusions: Our findings reveal the spectrum of mtDNA variants in HIV-1-infected children who had an excellent virological response. mtDNA mutations accumulated during ART may play an important role in facilitating the occurrence of mitochondrial dysfunction. This study investigated the variations of stable isotopes (δ 18 O and δD) in precipitation at Deqin on the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that correlations between stable isotopes in precipitation and temperature vary during different seasons. In comparison, an apparent inverse correlation between stable isotopes and precipitation amount exists throughout different seasons. Hence, the “amount effect” appears to have significantly controlled the stable isotope variations in precipitation over the entire sampling period, rather than the “temperature effect”. The overall temporal variations of δ 18 O and δD in precipitation from Deqin are similar to those from a southern station at Xishuangbanna. Both stations demonstrate considerably depleted precipitation δ 18 O values in the summer as a consequence of intense Asian summer monsoon activities. However, at Xishuangbanna, the occurrences of the timing and duration of the depleted δ 18 O values, as well as the negative surface lift index values, occur earlier and last longer than those at Deqin. These results indicate that the Asian summer monsoon onset is later and that the duration of the monsoon activities is shorter at Deqin relative to Xishuangbanna. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the fact that the survival of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has improved worldwide because of the increasingly powerful and highly active antiretroviral therapy, opportunistic infections (OIs) of the central nervous system (CNS) remain a serious burden. HIV-1 is capable of entering the CNS through infected peripheral monocytes, but its effect on OIs of CNS remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of HIV-1 in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients with CNS OIs. A total of 24 patients with CNS OIs and 16 non-CNS OIs (control) cases were selected. These AIDS patients were infected with HIV-1 by paid blood donors in China. HIV-1 loads in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were detected using RT-PCR, and the C2-V5 region of HIV-1 envelope gene was amplified from viral quasispecies isolated from CSF using nested PCR. The CSF HIV-1 load of CNS OIs was higher than that of non-CNS OIs, but plasma HIV-1 load of CNS OIs was not higher than that of non-CNS OIs. The nucleotide sequence of C2-V5 region of the HIV-1 quasispecies isolated from the CSF of CNS OIs had a high diversity, and the HIV-1 quasispecies isolated from the CSF of CNS OIs revealed R5 tropism as 11/25 charge rule. Deteriorating air quality is one of the most important environmental factors posing significant health risks to urban dwellers. Therefore, an exploration of the factors influencing air pollution and the formulation of targeted policies to address this issue are critically needed. Although many studies have used semi-parametric geographically weighted regression and geographically weighted regression to study the spatial heterogeneity characteristics of influencing factors of PM2.5 concentration change, due to the fixed bandwidth of these methods and other reasons, those studies still lack the ability to describe and explain cross-scale dynamics. The multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) method allows different variables to have different bandwidths, which can produce more realistic and useful spatial process models. By applying the MGWR method, this study investigated the spatial heterogeneity and spatial scales of impact of factors influencing PM2.5 concentrations in major Chinese cities during the period 2005–2015. This study showed the following: (1) Factors influencing changes in PM2.5 concentrations, such as technology, foreign investment levels, wind speed, precipitation, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), evidenced significant spatial heterogeneity. Of these factors, precipitation, NDVI, and wind speed had small-scale regional effects, whose bandwidth ratios are all less than 20%, while foreign investment levels and technologies had medium-scale regional effects, whose bandwidth levels are 23% and 32%, respectively. Population, urbanization rates, and industrial structure demonstrated weak spatial heterogeneity, and the scale of their influence was predominantly global. (2) Overall, the change of NDVI was the most influential factor, which can explain 15.3% of the PM2.5 concentration change. Therefore, an enhanced protection of urban surface vegetation would be of universal significance. In some typical areas, dominant factors influencing pollution were evidently heterogeneous. Change in wind speed is a major factor that can explain 51.6% of the change in PM2.5 concentration in cities in the Central Plains, and change in foreign investment levels is the dominant influencing factor in cities in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, explaining 30.6% and 44.2% of the PM2.5 concentration change, respectively. In cities located within the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, NDVI is a key factor, reducing PM2.5 concentrations by 9.7%. Those results can facilitate the development of region-specific measures and tailored urban policies to reduce PM2.5 pollution levels in different regions such as Northeast China and the Sichuan Basin. There have been debates and a lack of understanding about the complex effects of urban-scale urban form on air pollution. Based on the remotely sensed data of 150 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei agglomeration in China from 2000 to 2015, we studied the effects of urban form on fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations from multiple perspectives. The panel models show that the elastic coefficients of aggregation index and fractal dimension are the highest among all factors for the whole region. Population density, aggregation index, and fractal dimension have stronger influences on air pollution in small cities, while area size demonstrates the opposite effect. Population density has a stronger impact on medium/high-elevation cities, while night light intensity (NLI), fractal dimension, and area size show the opposite effect. Low road network density can enlarge the influence magnitude of NLI and population density. The results of the linear regression model with multiplicative interactions provide evidence of interactions between population density and NLI or aggregation index. The slope of the line that captures the relationship between NLI on PM2.5 is positive at low levels of population density, flat at medium levels of population density, and negative at high levels of population density. The study results also show that when increasing the population density, the air pollution in a city with low economic and low morphological aggregation degrees will be impacted more greatly. Rapid global changes are altering regional hydrothermal conditions, especially in ecologically vulnerable areas such as coastal regions, subsequently influencing the dynamics of vegetation growth. However, there is limited research investigating the response of vegetation in these regions to extreme climates and the associated time lag-accumulation relationships. This study utilized a combined approach of gradual and abrupt analysis to examine the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation dynamics in the coastal provinces of China from 2000 to 2019. Additionally, we evaluated the time lag-accumulation response of vegetation to extreme climate events. The results showed that (1) extreme high temperatures and extreme precipitation had increased over the past two decades, with greater warming observed in high latitudes and concentrated precipitation increases in water-rich southern regions; (2) both gradual and abrupt analyses indicate significant vegetation improvement in coastal provinces; (3) significant lag-accumulation relationships were observed between vegetation and extreme climate in the coastal regions of China, and the time-accumulation effects were stronger than the time lag effects. The accumulation time of extreme temperatures was typically less than one month, and the accumulation time of extreme precipitation was 2–3 months. Urbanization has important impacts on the variation of urban precipitation. Understanding of those impacts is a critical issue for the regulation of human activities and urban planning in cities. According to previous studies, urbanization affects precipitation in urban areas mainly through three aspects, namely, urban heat island effect (UHI), aerosol and underlying surface changes. Many researchers have worked on the pairwise relationship between one of these aspects with precipitation. However, the interactions between different aspects may have complicated influences on the total effects of urbanization on precipitation. The effect of one aspect may strengthen or counteract the effect of another. Until now, there is no quantitative analysis on the path and magnitude of those interactions. The objective of this study is to carry out a quantitative path-analysis on the impacts of urbanization on precipitation in urban areas of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region of China, with the hope to reveal the mechanism how the different effects of urbanization interactively influence on the precipitation in urban areas. The 151 towns and cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region were selected as study areas. The data we used mainly included the night light remote-sensing data, aerosol concentration, Urban Land Surface Temperature (LST) data, NDVI, forest cover and precipitation in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. First, we calculated five indicators for each urban area and for each month, namely, the urbanization intensity, aerosol concentration, UHI intensity, vegetation index and precipitation. Then, we analyzed the total effect of urbanization intensity and the individual effect of aerosol concentration, UHI intensity, and vegetation to precipitation using a fixed effect model. Based upon that, we built a structural equation model to analyze the proportion that urbanization impacts on precipitation through aerosol concentration, UHI intensity, and vegetation, and the magnitude of the interactions. The results show that urbanization intensity and urban vegetation are positively correlated with precipitation with a ratio of 0.39 and 0.28, respectively, while UHI is negative correlated with precipitation with a ratio of -0.30 in urban areas in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region throughout the year. The relationship between aerosol concentration and precipitation is not stable. Urbanization intensity impact negatively vegetation with a ratio of -0.15. The total effects of urbanization intensity, vegetation and UHI on precipitation were -0.177, -0.088 and -0.104, respectively, while the indirect effect of urbanization through vegetation and UHI was -0.028. This indicates that urban precipitation is greatly affected by vegetation, and the increase of vegetation has a great role in promoting the increase of urban precipitation. In the process of urbanization, attention should be paid to the protection of vegetation and afforestation.The results help to comprehensively understand the mechanism of urbanization on precipitation and the environmental effects of urbanization, and provide suggestions for the rational planning of the underlying surface in the urbanization process of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) are widely used in anti-hepatitis B virus (anti-HBV) therapy for effective inhibition of HBV replication. However, HBV resistance to NAs has emerged, resulting in virus reactivation and disease recurrence. Data on the current dynamics of HBV resistance are still rare in China. This study analysed 4491 plasma samples with HBV primary genotypic resistance mutations representative of the general HBV resistance situation in northern China from 2009–2016. We found that entecavir (ETV), representing 57.6% (12 713/22 060) of NA users in North China in 2016, has become the major NA for treating Chinese patients infected with HBV. Despite >50% of M204I/V±L180M among all HBV resistance cases annually and extensive exposure of patients to lamivudine (LAM), telbivudine (LdT) and adefovir dipivoxil (ADV), ETV resistance also showed a dramatically increased incidence, which rose to 17.1% in 2016. Moreover, A181T/V, ETV resistance mutations and multidrug resistance mutations were found more frequently in HBV genotype C compared with genotype B (21.2% vs. 8.5%, 12.4% vs. 7.9% and 5.9% vs. 3.0%, respectively), whereas M204I and N236T were more predominant in genotype B than genotype C (40.3% vs. 20.8% and 11.3% vs. 1.8%, respectively). In conclusion, we report the dynamic changes of HBV NA resistance mutation patterns and the current NA usage profile for anti-HBV treatment in North China over the past 8 years. The urban thermal environment is affected by multiple urban form and natural environment factors; research on the accurate prediction of the urban thermal environment, considering the interaction among different urban environmental factors, is still lacking. The development of a machine learning model provides a good means of solving complex problems. This study aims to clarify the relationship between urban environmental variables and the urban thermal environment through high-precision machine learning models as well as provide scenarios of future urban thermal environment developments. We defined an urban thermal environment index (UTEI), considering twelve urban form and natural indicators sourced from the remote sensing data of 150 cities in the Jing-Jin-Ji region from 2000 to 2015. We achieved accurate predictions of UTEI through training a gradient-boosted regression trees model. By unpacking the model, we found that the contribution rate of elevation (ELEV) was the highest. Among all the urban form indicators, the elongation index (ELONG), urban population (POP), nighttime light intensity (NLI), urban area size (AREA), and urban shape index (SHAPE) also had high contributions. We set up five scenarios to simulate the possible impact of different urban form factors on the overall urban thermal environment quality in the region. Under extremely deteriorated patterns that do not control urban expansion and vegetation reduction, the average UTEI could be as high as 0.55–0.76 °C in summer and 0.24–0.29 °C in winter, yet in the extremely optimized situation, UTEI decreased by 0.69 °C in summer and 0.56 °C in winter. The dominance of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and soil water content (SWC) for plant water stress is still under debate. These two variables are strongly coupled and influenced by climatic drivers. The impacts of climatic drivers on the relationships between gross primary production (GPP) and water stress from VPD/SWC and the interaction between VPD and SWC are not fully understood. Here, applying statistical methods and extreme gradient boosting models—Shapley additive explanations framework to eddy‐covariance observations from the global FLUXNET2015 data set, we found that the VPD‐GPP relationship was strongly influenced by climatic interactions and that VPD was more important for plant water stress than SWC across most plant functional types when we removed the effect of main climatic drivers, e.g. air temperature, incoming shortwave radiation and wind speed. However, we found no evidence for a significant influence of elevated CO2 on stress alleviation, possibly because of the short duration of the records (approximately one decade). Additionally, the interactive effect between VPD and SWC differed from their individual effect. When SWC was high, the SHAP interaction value of SWC and VPD on GPP was decreased with increasing VPD, but when SWC was low, the trend was the opposite. Additionally, we revealed a threshold effect for VPD stress on GPP loss; above the threshold value, the stress on GPP was flattened off. Our results have important implications for independently identifying VPD and SWC limitations on plant productivity, which is meaningful for capturing the magnitude of ecosystem responses to water stress in dynamic global vegetation models. Serving as a medium between source water and cellulose, leaf water contributes to the isotope ratios (δ18O, δ2H) of plant organic matter, which can be used for paleoclimate reconstruction. This study is the first to examine the diurnal variations in the δ18O and δ2H of leaf water on the southern Tibetan Plateau. The δ18O and δ2H of leaf water were relatively low when precipitation events occurred. In particular, 18O and 2H of leaf water became extremely depleted 5 h after the precipitation event. Our findings demonstrate that precipitation can modify the isotope ratios of leaf water from external and internal causes. First, precipitation events affect meteorological elements, lead to decreases in leaf transpiration, and immediately weaken the isotope enrichment of leaf water ('rapid effect' of precipitation). Second, precipitation events affect the internal plant–soil water cycle process, causing the plant to preferentially use deeper soil water, and the corresponding isotope ratios of leaf water exhibit extremely low values 5 h after precipitation events ('delay effect' of precipitation). This study suggests that researchers need to be cautious in separating the signals of precipitation and hydrological processes when interpreting isotope records preserved in tree-ring cellulose archives from the Tibetan Plateau. Transmitted drug resistance (TDR) is an ongoing public health problem in HIV disease treatment. However, little is known about TDR among men who have sex with men (MSM) patients in China. In addition, TDR prevalence among patients with acute HIV infection (AHI) or early HIV infection (EHI) was believed higher than that of patients with chronic HIV infection (CHI), but as AHI is typically either unidentified or crudely defined in large populations, very few direct comparisons have been made. We did a retrospective analysis of TDR in 536 antiretroviral-naive MSM patients from our immunodeficiency clinics at You'an Hospital, Capital Medical University (CMU), in Beijing, China, 2008-2011. The cohort included 266 patients with AHI/EHI and 270 patients with CHI. We analyzed the subtype, estimated the TDR prevalence, and characterized the model of TDR and the predicted drug sensitivity. Additionally, we made a comparison of TDR between the patients with AHI/EHI and patients with CHI. Our results indicated that among the 536 patients, HIV-1 subtype CRF01_AE accounted for 52.1%, subtype B accounted for 24.8%, CRF07_BC/ CRF08_BC accounted for 21.6% (116/536), and 1.3% were denoted as unique recombinant forms (URFs). A total of 7.8% patients had one or more transmitted HIV-1 drug resistance mutations, representing 6.2% for PI-related mutations, 0.9% for NRTI-related mutations, and 1.7% for NNRTI-related mutations. Although patients with AHI/EHI had a higher TDR prevalence as compared to that of patients with CHI, the difference was not statistically significant. There was no significant difference in TDR model and predicted drug susceptibility between the two groups of patients either. This study provides important strategic information for public health planning by healthcare officials in China and warrants a comprehensive study with larger patient cohorts from various healthcare centers within China. Equality in regional development, as a trend in urban development worldwide, is an inevitable way to create a coordinated and sustainable human society. Assessing and resolving regional development inequality has become an issue that has attracted much attention from policy makers and scholars. However, traditional socioeconomic statistical data and daytime visible remote sensing images suffer from significant time lags and ignored social and economic attributes. In this communication, the regions across the Taiwan Strait Region (TSR), covering Fujian in mainland China and Taiwan were selected as research area to analyze inequality of urban development and influencing factors by adopting methods such as time series decomposition, inequality analysis and ridge regression model from 2000 to 2020. We found that TSR's urbanization exhibited spatial disparities and periodic characteristics, urbanization level in coastal areas is higher than that in inland areas, and gradual dispersion from urban to suburbs. TSR and Taiwan's urbanization evolution are divided into fluctuating development (2000–2007), accelerated growth (2008–2014) and slow growth (2015–2020), while Fujian directly entered a period of rapid development after experiencing fluctuating development. TSR's urban development tends to be more equitable. Though the equality of Fujian's urban development lags behind that of Taiwan, its mitigation trend growing is growing much faster. This study investigated the variations in stable oxygen isotopes in daily precipitation (δ18Op) collected between 2010 and 2013 at four sites across the East Asian monsoon region to address the controversy whether local meteorological factors, moisture transport pathway, or convection dominates the δ18Op changes. We found that the δ18Op time series exhibit opposite seasonal patterns between the southern and northern sites; however, relatively low δ18Op values occur at each site during summer. The opposite seasonal patterns are closely related to the proportional change in the contributions from oceanic (>52% in the south) and continental (>85% in the north) moisture sources. Moisture transport distances also influence the seasonal δ18Op fluctuations. In the south, the moisture transported over short distances from the middle of the western Pacific Ocean results in relatively high δ18Op values during the premonsoon season. In contrast, long-distance transport of moisture from the Indian and equatorial Pacific Oceans during the monsoon season results in relatively low δ18Op values. In the north, relatively low δ18Op values during the monsoon season can be attributed to an increase in relatively distant moisture originating from the middle of the western Pacific Ocean. Convection only plays a role in affecting δ18Op values in the south during the monsoon season. Our study suggests that moisture transport pathway (moisture sources and moisture transport distances) is a major factor that governs seasonal variations in δ18Op across the East Asian monsoon region, which has implications for the interpretation of paleoclimate records from this region. In the current era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the incidence of HIV dementia has declined, but the prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) remains high. HIV-induced systemic and localized inflammation is considered to be one of the mechanisms of HAND. Changes in cytokine levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during HIV infection might help to identify HAND. To investigate whether the cytokine profile of the CSF during HIV infection could be used as a biomarker of HAND, we compared cytokine levels in the CSF of HIV-infected cases with and without neurocognitive impairment. Cytokine concentrations in the CSF were measured by quantification bioassays (Luminex xMAP). HIV-infected cases with neurocognitive impairment demonstrated higher levels of interleukin (IL)-8, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, induced protein (IP)-10, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the CSF than those without neurocognitive impairment (G-CSF ( p = 0.0003), IL-8 ( p = 0.0046), IP-10 ( p < 0.0001), and MCP-1 ( p < 0.0001)). There was no significant impact of HAART on cytokine levels in the CSF, except for IP-10, which was higher in HAART-treated patients with impaired cognition ( p = 0.0182). Findings from this preliminary study suggest that elevated levels of the cytokines IL-8, MCP-1, G-CSF, and IP-10 in the CSF are associated with neurocognitive impairment in HIV infection, and these cytokines likely represent a biomarker profile for HAND. In the highly active antiretroviral therapy era, the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder remains high with the improved survival. The prevalence of resistance differs across geographical areas and HIV subtypes. Currently, little information on the resistance patterns in the central nervous system (CNS) is available in Chinese settings. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the pol gene from paired cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples of 34 Chinese HIV-infected patients. We found that eight subjects harbored mutations that confer drug resistance, and of these, six subjects exhibited discordant resistance patterns between the CNS and the blood. The levels of viral diversity in the CNS were significantly higher than those in the blood ( p < 0.0001). Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) disrupts the host microbial balance. During disease progression, the oral microbial environment is altered in untreated people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); however, no studies have reported changes in salivary microbial diversity during different stages of HIV infection. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess the relationships between immune dysfunction and changes in saliva microbiota. To this end, we collected saliva samples from 11 HIV-negative individuals and 44 PLWHA during different stages based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria (stage 0, early stage during the first 6 months after infection; stages 1, 2, and 3 associated with CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts of ≥500, 200–499, and ≤200 or opportunistic infection, respectively). We analyzed salivary microbial community diversity using polymerase chain reaction amplification and Illumina MiSeq sequencing. We found that HIV-positive individuals had significantly greater alpha-diversity in the microbial community composition compared with HIV-negative controls (P < 0.05) except for AIDS (stage 3); however, the predominant salivary microbiota in the five groups remained similar. Porphyromonas in the four positive groups was the only genus that was significantly less abundant in the HIV-positive groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). There were some consistencies between the general abundance of salivary microbiota and AIDS disease progression. Lots of bacterial abundances in the saliva increased dramatically during the acute HIV infection (stage 0), and some of the negligible and abnormally proliferating bacteria in the asymptomatic stage showed a downward trend. Additionally, in the AIDS stage, partial inhibition was observed. Notably, Porphyromonas was closely related to the immune activation of HIV, showing a decline in abundance once infected with HIV. Solobacterium , which induces inflammation, was negatively correlated with CD4 counts. The water footprint theory has provided an effective approach for evaluating the utilization of freshwater resources in agricultural production. However, there are few studies have explored the dynamic coupling relationship between water footprint and socioeconomic factors, especially from the perspective of regional ecological features. Therefore, the water footprint method was used to investigate the dynamic evolution of agricultural water consumption from 2005 to 2015 in Zhangjiakou, an extremely water-scarce city which is divided into six ecological zones (I, II, III, IV, V, and VI). Then mathematical models such as the Gini coefficient were first employed to evaluate the spatiotemporal matching characteristics of agricultural water footprint and socioeconomic factors. The results show that: (1) The agricultural water footprint increased by 1.69 × 109 m3 in Zhangjiakou, of which the animal products water footprint increased by 1.59 × 109 m3, accounting for 94%. (2) Cereals had always been the major contributors to crop water footprint, with an increasing contribution rate from 49% to 54%. Milk and egg products were the main drivers for the increasing water footprint of animal products, with a total contribution rate increased from 46% to 55%. Meanwhile, the spatial differentiation was significant. The contribution rate of the cereal water footprint was less than 50% in counties of high-altitude ecological zones I, II and IV in 2015, while it was higher than 50% in counties of low-altitude ecological zones III, V and VI. (3) The per unit area water footprint in counties of the ecological zone III was much higher than the average level, while per capita water footprint and per unit output value water footprint were far below it, indicating agricultural structure optimization requires a comprehensive consideration of multiple socioeconomic factors. The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in Wuhan have affected more than 250 countries and regions worldwide. However, most of the clinical studies have been focused on Wuhan, and little is known about the disease outside of Wuhan in China. In this retrospective cohort study, we report the early clinical features of 80 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the hospital in Beijing. The results show that 27 (33.8%) patients had severe illness. Six (7.5%) patients were admitted to the ICU, and 3 (3.8%) patients died. Forty-eight percent (39/80) of the patients had a history of living/traveling in Wuhan. Patients with severe- illness were significantly older (average age, 71 years old vs 44 years old) and had a high incidence of expectoration (59.3% vs 34.0%), shortness of breath (92.6% vs 9.4%), anorexia (51.9% vs 18.9%) and confusion(18.5% vs 0%) compared with nonsevere patients. The systolic blood pressure (median, 130 mmHg vs 120 mmHg) was higher and the oxygen saturation (median, 98.3% vs 92.0%) was significantly lower in severe patients than nonsevere patients. In addition, myoglobin (median, 56.0 ng/mL vs 35.0 ng/mL), troponin I (median, 0.02 pg/mL vs 0.01 pg/mL), C-reactive protein (median, 69.7 mg/L vs 12.9 mg/L) and neutrophils (median, 3.3×109/L vs 2.2×109/L) were significantly increased, while lymphocytes (median, 0.8×109/L vs 1.2×109/L), albumin (mean, 32.8 g/L vs 36.8 g/L) and the creatinine clearance rate (median, 91.2 vs 108.2 ml/min/1.73m2) were significantly decreased among severe patients. Our study revealed that older patients with high levels of C-reactive protein, myoglobin, troponin I, and neutrophil and high systolic blood pressure as well as low levels of lymphocytes, and albumin and a low creatinine clearance rate and oxygen saturation were more likely to have severe disease. • Ecological restoration should consider both effects on ecosystem service supply and trade-offs. • Four ecosystem services supply and trade-offs were analyzed under six restoration scenarios. • Restoration of the case study area improved all service supplies, even compared to the reference. • But higher service supply improvements and lower trade-off intensities are still possible. Ecological restoration is becoming increasingly important in addressing the global crisis of ecosystem degradation. Ecosystem services, as a concept that connects people and natural ecosystems, can be incorporated into the design, practice and evaluation of restoration projects to promote both the socioeconomic and ecological effects of restoration. However, the full incorporation of ecosystem services in landscape-scale restoration projects is still greatly lacking. In this study, we used the Dashihe mine tailings restoration project in Hebei, China, as a case study and analyzed data from field surveys, remote sensing and literature reviews to study the following two questions: 1) How would multiple ecosystem service supply capabilities and their tradeoffs change after ecological restoration; 2) How can multiple ecosystem service supply capabilities be maximized while minimizing their tradeoffs? The supply capabilities of four important ecosystem services (i.e., soil retention, dust deposition, carbon sequestration and habitat maintenance) and their tradeoff intensities under six restoration scenarios were quantified and compared. The results showed that restored ecosystems outperformed unrestored and even the reference conditions in terms of ecosystem service supply enhancement. However, there is still much room for improvement compared to the recommended restoration scenario. The recommended scenario could result in both higher service supplies and lower tradeoff intensities among the services. On this basis, we call for more incorporation of ecosystem service supply and tradeoff analysis in future ecological restoration projects to reverse the declining trends of ecosystem services across the globe. Purpose. Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major obstacle in chemotherapy of leukemia treatments. In this paper, we investigated Usnea Acid (UA) as MDR reversal agent on hematologic K562/ADR cells via ROS dependent apoptosis. Methods. CCK8 assay was used to measure cell viability rate of K562/ADR. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, cell cycle distribution, cell apoptosis were measured with flow cytometry, respectively. Proteins related to apoptosis were measured by Western blot. Intracellular Adriamycin accumulation was observed by confocal microscopy and measured by flow cytometry. Results. In vitro study showed intracellular Adriamycin accumulation was remarkably increased by UA. Cell viability treated with Adr (4 μM) was decreased from 89.8%  ± 4.7 to 32%  ± 8.9 by combined with UA (4 μM). Adr-induced apoptosis and G1/G0 phase cell cycle arrest were remarkably increased by UA, as well as, intracellular ROS level. However, MDR reversing activity of UA was inhibited by N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a ROS scavenger. Conclusion. These data provide compelling evidence that UA is a promising agent against MDR in leukemia cell line and suggest a promising therapeutic approach for leukemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Managing relationships among ecosystem service supplies and demands and manipulating certain drivers to maintain well-balanced ecosystem service suites are key challenges for ensuring sustainable social-ecological systems. However, comprehensive research on the spatial relationships and determinants of ecosystem service supply-demand mismatches remains rare. Therefore, we assessed trade-offs and synergies among bundled ecosystem service supply-demand balances and their underlying drivers in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Four distinct ecosystem service bundles revealed diverse ecosystem service supply-demand mismatches among different locations associated with various trade-offs and synergies. Building weighted networks specifically for different bundles promoted innovative understandings of the emergent properties of ecosystem services and unveiled the topological ecosystem service differences, synergistic interdependences among these services and essential umbrella ecosystem services for improving multiple ecosystem service supply-demand states. Social factors severely increased ecosystem service deficits in some bundles, while biophysical factors more critically improved ecosystem service surpluses in other bundles. Besides, the similar nonlinear responses of both the overall supply-demand states of multiple services and the supply-demand relationships of umbrella ecosystem services to their shared drivers in most bundles further supported the important roles of umbrella services in improving ecosystem service multifunctionality. Our study emphasized the significance of considering the spatial relationships and drivers of ecosystem service supply-demand mismatches when targeting effective spatial policies for realizing the sustainability of social-ecological systems and could provide useful guidance for addressing complex human-nature interdependencies. This project reports results of the first precipitation stable isotope ( δ 18 O and δ D ) time series produced for Qamdo in the northern Hengduan Mountains in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The data showed that the fluctuations of precipitation stable isotopes at Qamdo during the different seasons revealed various moisture sources. The westerlies and local recycling moisture dominated at the study area before the pre-monsoon and after the post-monsoon seasons, which resulted in similar trends of both precipitation stable isotopes and temperature. The marine moisture was transported to the northern Hengduan Mountains by the winter India–Burma Trough combined with convection. Consequently, stable isotopes in subsequent precipitation were occasionally observed to decrease suddenly. However, δ 18 O and δ D values of precipitation at Qamdo were lower during the monsoon period and the duration of those low values was longer because of the effects of the Indian Summer Monsoon and the strengthening convection. Our findings indicate that the effects of seasonal precipitation differences caused by various climate systems, including the winter India–Burma Trough and Indian Summer Monsoon, need to be considered when attempting to interpret tree-ring and ice core records for the Hengduan Mountains. We have analyzed mutations in whole mitochondrial (mt) genomes of blood samples from HIV-1-infected children treated with long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART), who had an excellent virological response. HIV-1-infected children who have undergone ART for 4 y with an excellent virological response (group A; 15 children) and ten healthy children (controls) without HIV-1 infection were enrolled retrospectively. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained and mt DNA mutations were studied. The total number of mtDNA mutations in group A was 3 H more than in the controls (59 vs. 19, P < 0.001) and the same trend was seen in all mtDNA regions. Among these mtDNA mutations, 140 and 28 mutations were detected in group A and the controls, respectively. The D-loop , CYTB and 12s rRNA were the three most common mutation regions in both groups, with significant differences between the groups observed at nucleotide positions C309CC, T489C CA514deletion, T16249C and G16474GG (D-loop); T14783C, G15043A, G15301A, and A15662G ( CYTB ); and G709A ( 12s rRNA ). G15043A and A15662G had been associated with mitochondrial diseases. Our findings suggest that mtDNA mutations occur frequently in long-term ART-treated, HIV-1-infected children who have an excellent virological response, although they did not have obvious current symptoms. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents a major health problem worldwide. HBV X (HBx) protein is the most common open reading frame that may undergo mutations, resulting in the development of HCC. This study aimed to determine specific HBx mutations that differentiate the central- and para-tumor tissues, and identify their association with HCC development. HBx gene from HCC tumor and para-tumor tissues of 47 HCC patients was amplified, sequenced and statistically analyzed. A novel combination of 2 mutations at residues 10 and 144 was identified which might play a significant role in HCC development. Expression vectors carrying HBx with the specific mutations were constructed and transfected into HepG2 and p53-null HepG2 cells. Compared to wild type (WT) and single mutation of HBx at residue 10 or 144, the 10/144 double mutations strongly up-regulated p21 expression and prolonged G1/S transition in WT- and p53-null HepG2 cells. Apoptosis was also inhibited by HBx harboring 10/44 double-mutation. Binding of 10/144 double-mutant HBx to p53 was lower than WT HBx. The genetic evolution of HIV-1 in the central nervous system (CNS) is different from that in peripheral tissues. We analyzed 121 clonal sequences of the V3-V5 regions of the env gene generated from paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma samples from nine chronically infected patients (four with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) and five without HAND). The sequence analysis indicated the significant differences between CSF and plasma was only observed in the C4 region ( P = 0.043) in HAND patients. Significant increases in synonymous substitutions (dS) within the V4 region ( P = 0.020) and in nonsynonymous substitutions (dN) within the C4 region ( P = 0.029) were observed in the CSF-derived sequences. By contrast, CSF-derived sequences from non-HAND patients showed similar levels of diversity; dS and dN as the plasma-derived sequences. Signature differences between the CSF- and plasma-derived sequences were found at 12 amino acid positions for HAND patients and nine positions for non-HAND patients. Interestingly, five sites (positions 388, 396, 397, 404, and 406) that all belong to signature patterns exhibited positive selection pressure in CSF samples, but only site 406 was positively selected in the plasma samples from the HAND patients. Conversely, in the non-HAND patients, there were four sites (positions 397, 404, 432, and 446) showed positive selection pressure in the plasma samples, but only site 446 in the CSF samples. These results suggest that discordant patterns of genetic evolution occur between the tissue-specific HIV-1 quasispecies in the HAND and non-HAND patients. The host immune response to pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) involves interactions among immune cell subsets and cytokines. However, the definite pathogenesis and immunological influences of P. jirovecii have not been fully elucidated. Mass cytometry and high-throughput sequencing of the T cell receptor (TCR) were used to profile the host immune response to human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and P. jirovecii infection. Our findings demonstrated that patients with PCP showed different immune cell proportions when compared to healthy controls. Changes in cytokines were found after anti-PCP treatment, suggested that cytokines may play an important role in controlling the pathogen. Furthermore, PCP patients showed marked reduction of TCR repertoire diversity. The diversity of TCR repertoire was restored by the anti-PCP treatment. • Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 and NO 2 are associated with increased odds of CKD. • Urbanization modifies the associations of PM 2.5 and NO 2 with CKD prevalence. • Associations of PM 2.5 and NO 2 with CKD are stronger in median-urbanized areas. An increasing number of studies have linked ambient air pollution to chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence. However, its potential effect modification by urbanization has not been investigated. Based on data of 47,204 adults from the China National Survey of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKSCKD) dataset, night light satellite remote sensing data and high-resolution air pollution inversion products, the present cross-sectional study investigated the association between fine particulate matter <2.5 mm in diameter (PM 2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2), night light index (NLI) and CKD prevalence in China, and the effect modification by urbanization characterized by administrative classification and NLI on the pollutant-health associations. Our results showed that a 10-μg/m3 increase in PM 2.5 at 3-year moving average, a 10-μg/m3 increase in NO 2 at 5-year moving average, and a 10-U increase in NLI at 5-year moving average were significantly associated with increased odds of CKD prevalence [OR = 1.24 (95 %CI:1.14, 1.35); OR = 1.12 (95 %CI:1.09, 1.15); OR = 1.05 (95 %CI:1.02, 1.07)]. Meanwhile, the pollutant-health associations were more apparent in medium-urbanized areas compared to low- and high-urbanized areas. For instance, a 10-μg/m3 increase in PM 2.5 concentration at 2-year moving average was associated with increased odds of CKD in the areas with NLI level in the second [OR = 2.78 (95 %CI:1.77, 4.36)] and third quartiles [OR = 1.49 (95 %CI:1.14, 1.95)], compared to the lowest [OR = 0.96 (95% CI: 0.73, 1.26)] and highest [OR = 0.63 (95% CI: 0.39–1.02)] quartiles. PM 2.5 and NO 2 were associated with increased odds of CKD prevalence, especially in areas with medium NLI levels, suggesting the necessity of strengthening environmental management in medium-urbanized regions. Abstract: Oxidative stress has been suggested to play a key role in the neuropathogenesis of HIV infection. HIV proteins (gp120, Tat) and proinflammatory cytokines can trigger the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in DNA and RNA lesions. Among all the lesions induced by ROS, one of the most abundant lesions in DNA and RNA is 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-oxoG). Here, we studied accumulated DNA oxidative damage induced by ROS in the central nervous system (CNS) in tissue from neuro-AIDS patients. The frontal cortex of autopsy tissue from HIV-1 infected patients was adopted for analysis for HIV-1 subtype, nuclear and mitochondrial DNA lesions by immunofluorescence staining, qPCR and sequencing of PCR cloning. This study provides evidence that HIV infection in the CNS leads to nuclear and mitochondrial genomic DNA damage in the brain. High level of nuclear and mtDNA 8-oxoG damage were identified in the cortex autopsy tissue of HAND patients. Increased accumulation of mtDNA mutations and depletion occurs in brain tissue in a subset of HAND cases, and is significantly different from that observed in control cases. HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), characterized by cognitive, motor, and behavioral abnormalities, are common among people living with HIV and AIDS. In combined antiretroviral therapy era in Western countries, nearly 40% of HIV-infected patients continue to suffer from HAND, mainly with mild or asymptomatic cognitive impairment. However, the prevalence and the clinical features of HAND in China are still not well known. In this study, a multi-center cross-sectional study was performed to determine the prevalence and clinical features of HAND in 134 HIV-1 infected patients in China. The International HIV Dementia Scale and a neuropsychological test battery were administered for screening and diagnosis HAND. Subjective complaints, CD4 count and viral loads in both blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid were correlated with diagnosis of HAND. The results showed that the prevalence of HAND was approximately 37% in these patients. CD4 counts at time of sampling were significant lower in the HAND group than in the non-HAND group. But the distribution of the HAND severity did not differ by CD4 count or viral load. The presence of HAND was associated with cognitive and behavior disorder complaints (4.9- and 4.1-fold higher than those without HAND, respectively). The present data suggest that CD4 count and viral load cannot predict the severity of HAND, although the prevalence of HAND is similar to previous report in these patients. Cognitive and behavioral disorder is major complaint rather than cognitive and motor impairment. A larger prospective study is needed to obtain better estimates of HAND in China. Background: Despite prolonged treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the infectious HIV-1 continues to replicate and resides latently in the resting memory CD4+ T lymphocytes, which blocks the eradication of HIV-1. The viral persistence of HIV-1 is mainly caused by its proviral DNA being either linear nonintegrated, circular nonintegrated, or integrated. Previous reports have largely focused on the dynamics of HIV-1 DNA from the samples collected with relatively long time intervals during the process of disease and HAART treatment, which may have missed the intricate changes during the intervals in early treatment. Methodology/Principal Findings: In this study, we investigated the dynamics of HIV-1 DNA in patients during the early phase of HARRT treatment. Using optimized real time PCR, we observed significant changes in 2-LTR during the first 12- week of treatment, while total and integrated HIV-1 DNA remained stable. The doubling time and half-life of 2-LTR were not correlated with the baseline and the rate of changes in plasma viral load and various CD4+ T-cell populations. Longitudinal analyses on 2-LTR sequences and plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels did not reveal any significant changes in the same treatment period. Conclusions/Significance: Our study revealed the rapid changes in 2-LTR concentration in a relatively large number of patients during the early HAART treatment. The rapid changes indicate the rapid infusion and clearance of cells bearing 2- LTR in the peripheral blood. Those changes are not expected to be caused by the blocking of viral integration, as our study did not include the integrase inhibitor raltegravir. The increasing degree of urbanization has continuously aggravated the surface urban heat island (sUHI) effect in China. To investigate the correlation between spatiotemporal changes of sUHI and urbanization in Beijing, land surface temperature in summer from 2000 to 2017 and the distribution of local climate zones (LCZs) in 2003, 2005, 2010, and 2017 was retrieved using remote sensing data and used to analyze the sUHI area and intensity change. The statistical method GeoDetector was utilized to investigate the explanatory ability of LCZs and population as the driving factors. The year of 2006 was identified as the main turning year for sUHI evolution. The variation the sUHI from 2000 showed first an increasing trend, and then a decreasing one. The sUHI pattern changed before and after 2009. Before 2009, the sUHI mainly increased in the suburbs, and then, the enhancement area moved to the central area. The sUHI intensity change under different LCZ conversion conditions showed that the LCZ conversion influences the sUHI intensity significantly. Based on population distribution data, we found that the relationship between population density and sUHI gets weaker with increasing population density. The result of GeoDetector indicated that the LCZ is the main factor influencing the sUHI, but population density is an important auxiliary factor. This research reveals the sUHI variation pattern in Beijing from 2000 and could help city managers plan thermally comfortable urban environments with a better understanding of the effect of urban spatial form and population density on sUHIs. • NDVI and its drivers are obviously heterogeneous across six eco-geographic regions. • Water condition is more important than heat condition for NDVI landscape variation. • Generally, impact of temperature on vegetation greenness is weakened over time. • The links between human activity and NDVI is temporally enhanced in most regions. Analysis focused on sub-regional differentiation of vegetation greenness and their dominant drivers are needed to properly develop targeted strategies for sustainable management. In this study, we took China as a case study area, and analyzed the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of vegetation greenness and its strength of association with both environmental (topographical factors and hydrothermal conditions) and anthropogenic factors (land use type and population density) across six eco-geographic regions during 1982–2015. The whole period was divided into two periods by the turning point of 1998, after which China has implemented numerous forest protection projects. The attribution results based on the Geodetector method show the followings: (1) In China, precipitation is the dominant factor in landscape variation of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with a strength of association of 85%. Additionally, precipitation is also the dominant factor in arid and semi-arid regions, including Northern semiarid (NS) region, Northwestern arid (NWA) region and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) region. The dominant factors differ across diverse eco-geographic regions; for example, slope dominates in sub-tropical/tropical humid (STH) and middle temperate humid/sub-humid (MTH) regions. (2) Generally, the strength of association between vegetation and temperature decreases across China over the past 34 years, meaning that the limiting effect of temperature on the NDVI is weakened, similarly, the controlling effect of water conditions is also weakened. In contrast, the spatial association between anthropogenic factors and NDVI is enhanced. (3) The temporal dynamics of strength of association between factors and the NDVI differ in diverse periods and regions; for example, the strength of association between wind speed and NDVI decreased during 1982–1998, but increased during 1999–2015 in temperate humid/sub-humid (WTH) region; however, decreasing trends were revealed in the QTP region in both periods. Our study highlights that variation of NDVI is mainly attributed to climate change and land cover change. More than 3000 cities in China were used to study the effect of urbanization and local climate variability on urban vegetation across different geographical and urbanization conditions. The national scale estimation shows that China's urban vegetation depicts a trend of degradation from 2000 to 2015, especially in developed areas such as the Yangtze River Delta. According to the panel models, the increase of precipitation (PREC), solar radiation (SRAD), air temperature (TEMP), and specific humidity (SHUM) all enhance urban vegetation, while nighttime light intensity (NLI), population density (POPDEN), and fractal dimension (FRAC) do the opposite. The effects change along the East–West gradient; the influences of PREC and SHUM become greater, while those of TEMP, SRAD, NLI, AREA, and FRAC become smaller. PREC, SHUM, and SRAD play the most important roles in Northeast, Central, and North China, respectively. The role of FRAC and NLI in East China is much greater than in other regions. POPDEN remains influential across all altitudes, while FRAC affects only low-altitude cities. NLI plays a greater role in larger cities, while FRAC and POPDEN are the opposite. There is an increasing demand for urban form optimization to mitigate urban heat island (UHI) effect under the background of global climate change and urbanization. However, there is still a lack of understanding about how the relationship between urban form and UHI intensity changes under diverse urbanization contexts. This study aims to show the change patterns of the relationship between urban form and UHI intensity along the urban development gradient based upon the investigation of a total of 150 urban areas in the Jing-Jin-Ji region in China in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. We defined a comprehensive urban development index taking into account the size of urban area, population density and night light intensity to classify the different levels of urban development. A multi-model comparison was carried out to validate the results. We found that the increase in urban continuity, sprawling, scale and density all enhanced UHI effect at the regional scale. However, the relationship between urban form indicators and UHI intensity demonstrated two opposite patterns along the urban development gradient: population density, geometric complexity and continuity, and general vegetation index of a city were found to be increasingly influential, while night light intensity, geometric elongation and forest coverage presented declining influence. Finally, the study obtained an ascending contribution rate curve for urban geometry indicators, a convex curve for urban size indicators and a declining curve for urban vegetation. These changes along the urban development gradient may be closely related to the changes of the microclimate in cities due to land use, social and economic activities in different urban development stages. We conducted a prospective cohort study among HIV-negative MSM aged 18 years or older between 2007 and 2012 in Beijing, China to measure the rates of incident HIV and identify risk factors for infection. Among 5,800 participants evaluated at enrollment, we identified 486 prevalent cases of HIV (8.4%). Among the 3,625 enrollees who were HIV-negative at enrollment and completed at least one follow-up interview, we identified 440 incident cases of HIV in the follow up period: this constituted an HIV incidence rate of 7.1 per 100 person-years (95% CI: 6.4-7.7). Early treatment of syphilis may have significantly reduced risk of HIV infection (RR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.11-1.93), while MSM presenting perfect compliance in the cohort did not show reduction in HIV infection. Our study suggested that HIV incidence has been remained high in this sample of Chinese MSM during the intensive preventive intervention, suggesting that we need to find new strategies to prevent HIV infection in this population.
