Search

M-type stars are the ones that flare most frequently, but how big their maximum flare energy can reach is still unknown. We present 163 flares from 162 individual M2 through L1-type stars that triggered the GWAC, with flare energies ranging from $10^{32.2}$ to $10^{36.4}$ erg . The flare amplitudes range from $\triangle G = 0.84$ to $\sim 10$ mag. Flare energy increases with stellar surface temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) but both $\triangle G$ and equivalent duration $\log_{10}(ED)$ seem to be independent of $T_{\rm eff}$. Combining periods detected from light curves of TESS and K2, spectra from LAMOST, SDSS and the 2.16 m Telescope, and the Gaia DR3 data, we found that these GWAC flare stars are young. For the stars that have spectra, we found that these stars are in or very near to the saturation region, and $\log_{10}(L_{\rm H\alpha}/L_{\rm bol})$ is lower for M7-L1 stars than for M2-M6 stars. We also studied the relation between GWAC flare bolometric energy $E_{\rm bol}$ and stellar hemispherical area $S$, and found that $\log_{10}E_{\rm bol}$ (in erg) increases with increasing $S$ (in cm$^2$), and the maximum flare energy $\log_{10}E_{\rm bol, max} \geqslant \log_{10}S + 14.25$. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations and analysis of the type IIb supernova (SN) SN 2019tua, which exhibits multiple bumps in its declining light curves between 40 and 65 days after discovery. SN 2019tua shows a time to peak of about 25 days similar to other type IIb SNe. Our observations indicate a decrease in its brightness of about 1 magnitude in the 60 days after the peak. At about days 50, and 60, its multiband light curves exhibit bumpy behavior. The complex luminosity evolution of SN 2019tua could not be well modeled with a single currently popular energy source model, e.g., radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni, magnetar, interaction between the ejecta and a circumstellar shell. Even though the magnetar model has a smaller $\chi^2 / \text{dof}$ value, the complex changes in SN 2019tua's brightness suggest that more than one physical process might be involved. We propose a hybrid CSM interaction plus $^{56}$Ni model to explain the bolometric light curve (LC) of SN 2019tua. The fitting results show that the ejecta mass $M_{\rm ej} \approx 2.4~M_\odot$, the total CSM mass $M_{\rm CSM} \approx 1.0~M_\odot$, and the $^{56}$Ni mass $M_{\rm Ni} \approx 0.4~M_\odot$. The total kinetic energy of the ejecta is $E_k\approx 0.5 \times 10^{51}\rm~erg$. Stellar white-light flares are believed to play an essential role on the physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere of the surrounding exoplanets. Here we report an optical monitoring campaign on the nearby flaring system EI~Cnc carried out by the Ground-based Wide Angle Cameras (GWAC) and its dedicated follow-up telescope. A superflare, coming from the brighter component EI~CncA, was detected and observed, in which four components are required to properly model the complex decay light curve. The lower limit of flare energy in the $R-$band is estimated to be $3.3\times10^{32}$ ergs. 27 flares are additionally detected from the GWAC archive data with a total duration of 290 hours. The inferred cumulative flare frequency distribution follows a quite shallow power-law function with a slope of $\beta=-0.50\pm 0.03$ over the energy range between $10^{30}$ and $10^{33}$ erg, which reinforces the trend that stars cooler than M4 show enhanced superflare activity. The flares identified in EI~Cnc enable us to extend the $\tau-E$ relationship previously established in the white-light superflares of solar-type stars down to an energy as low as $\sim10^{30}$erg (i.e., by three orders): $\tau\propto E^{0.42\pm0.02}$, which suggests a common flare mechanism for stars with a type from M to solar-like, and implies an invariant of $B^{1/3}\upsilon_{\rm A}$ in the white-light flares., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We observed active M dwarf star AD Leo for 146 hr in photometry by GWAC-F30 and also analyzed 528-hr photometric data of the star from TESS. A total of 9 and 70 flares are detected from GWAC-F30 and TESS, respectively. Flare durations, amplitudes and energies are calculated. The distributions of the three properties and FFDs are given. Within the same energy range of flares, the FFDs of AD Leo obtained in this research and the previous study are basically consistent, which suggests that the magnetic activity of this star has not significantly changed compared to that decades ago. Comparing with the average FFD of M-type stars, AD Leo's FFD is twice higher, indicating that its magnetic activity is more active than that of the average level of the M-type. Based on TESS light curve, AD Leo's rotation period is calculated as 2.21${+0.01 \choose -0.01}$ day , supporting the result given in previous research. During the decay phase of the most energetic flare from TESS, we identified QPPs and determined a 26.5-min oscillation period, which is currently the longest period for AD Leo, suggesting that long periodic physical process existed during flare of this star.

White-light superflares from ultra cool stars are thought to be resulted from magnetic reconnection, but the magnetic dynamics in a fully convective star is not clear yet. In this paper, we report a stellar superflare detected with the Ground Wide Angle Camera (GWAC), along with rapid follow-ups with the F60A, Xinglong 2.16m and LCOGT telescopes. The effective temperature of the counterpart is estimated to be $2200\pm50$K by the BT-Settl model, corresponding to a spectral type of L0. The $R-$band light curve can be modeled as a sum of three exponential decay components, where the impulsive component contributes a fraction of 23\% of the total energy, while the gradual and the shallower decay phases emit 42\% and 35\% of the total energy, respectively. The strong and variable Balmer narrow emission lines indicate the large amplitude flare is resulted from magnetic activity. The bolometric energy released is about $6.4\times10^{33}$ ergs, equivalent to an energy release in a duration of 143.7 hours at its quiescent level. The amplitude of $\Delta R=-8.6 $mag ( or $\Delta V=-11.2$ mag), placing it one of the highest amplitudes of any ultra cool star recorded with excellent temporal resolution. We argue that a stellar flare with such rapidly decaying and huge amplitude at distances greater than 1 kpc may be false positive in searching for counterparts of catastrophic events such as gravitational wave events or gamma-ray bursts, which are valuable in time-domain astronomy and should be given more attention., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, MNRAS accepted

High-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide a powerful tool to probe the early universe, but still for relatively few do we have good observations of the afterglow. We here report the optical and near-infrared observations of the afterglow of a relatively high-redshift event, GRB\,220101A, triggered on New Year's Day of 2022. With the optical spectra obtained at XL2.16/BFOSC and NOT/ALFOSC, we determine the redshift of the burst at $z= 4.615$. Based on our optical and near-infrared data, combined with the X-ray data, we perform multiband fit with the python package \emph{afterglowpy}. A jet-break at $\sim$ 0.7 day post-burst is found to constrain the opening angle of the jet as $\sim$ 3.4 degree. We also determine circumburst density of $n_0 = 0.15\ {\rm cm}^{-3}$ as well as kinetic energy $E_{\rm K, iso} = 3.52\times 10^{54}$ erg. The optical afterglow is among the most luminous ever detected. We also find a ``mirror'' feature in the lightcurve during the prompt phase of the burst from 80 s to 120 s. Early optical observations of gamma-ray bursts can significantly contribute to the study of the central engine and physical processes therein. However, of the thousands observed so far, still only a few have data at optical wavelengths in the first minutes after the onset of the prompt emission. Here we report on GRB\,190106A, whose afterglow was observed in optical bands just 36 s after the {\em Swift}/BAT trigger, i.e., during the prompt emission phase. The early optical afterglow exhibits a bimodal structure followed by a normal decay, with a faster decay after $\sim \rm T_{0}+$1 day. We present optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of GRB\,190106A. We derive the redshift via metal absorption lines from Xinglong 2.16-m/BFOSC spectroscopic observations. From the BFOSC spectrum, we measure $z= 1.861\pm0.002$. The double-peak optical light curve is a significant feature predicted by the reverse-forward external shock model. The shallow decay followed by a normal decay in both the X-ray and optical light curves is well explained with the standard forward-shock model with late-time energy injection. Therefore, GRB\,190106A offers a case study for GRBs emission from both reverse and forward shocks., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

Hyperluminous optical-ultraviolet fares have been detected in gamma-ray bursts and the luminosity record was held by naked-eye event GRB 080319B. Such fares are widely attributed to internal shock or external reverse shock radiation. Here, with a new method developed to derive reliable photometry from saturated sources of Swift/UVOT, we carry out time-resolved analysis of the initial white-band 150s exposure of GRB 220101A, a burst at a redshift of 4.618, and report a rapidly evolving optical-ultraviolet fare with a high absolute AB magnitude of -39.4$\pm$0.2. In contrast to GRB 080319B, the temporal behaviour of this new fare does not trace the gamma-ray activity. Instead of either internal shocks or reverse shock, this extremely energetic optical-ultraviolet fare is most likely to originate from the refreshed shocks induced by the late-ejected extremely energetic material catching up with the earlier-launched decelerating outflow. Early afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are valuable for exploring the properties of their jets and ambient medium. We report our photometric and spectroscopic observations of GRB 210104A and discuss its jet properties with multiwavelength data. Our spectroscopic observation reveals several absorption features and a tentative redshift of 0.46 is identified. A bright optical flare that has a peak brightness of $R=13$ mag at $112\pm 7$~s was observed in the $R$ band during $67\sim 165$ seconds post the GRB trigger. The flux of the $R$-band afterglow decays with a slope of $\alpha_{\rm O}={-0.91\pm 0.03}$ at $t>650$~s. The early X-ray afterglow lightcurve is a smooth bump, and it decays with a slope of $\alpha_{\rm X}=-1.18\pm 0.01$ at late epoch. Our joint spectral fit to the optical-X-ray afterglows during $(1.1-1.3)\times 10^{4}$~s yields a photon index $\Gamma_{\rm O,X}=-1.82\pm 0.04$. The derived host galaxy extinction is $A_{R}=0.87$. Attributing the early optical flare to the reverse-shock (RS) emission and the late optical-X-ray emission to the forward shock emission; the optical and X-ray lightcurves at $t<3\times 10^4$~s can be well fit adopting an Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Comparing the properties of GRB 210104A with other GRBs that have detection of bright RS emission, we show that its jet is mildly magnetized ($R_{\rm B}=28$), with high radiation efficiency ($77\%$), is sub-energetic ($E_{\rm k, iso}=4.5\times 10^{51}$ erg), and moderately relativistic ($\Gamma_0\sim 35$) in a density medium ($n_{0}\sim 417\;{\rm cm}^{-3}$). In the archive of the Ground Wide Angle Camera (GWAC), we found 43 white light flares from 43 stars, among which, three are sympathetic or homologous flares, and one of them also has a quasi-periodic pulsation with a period of $13.0\pm1.5$ minutes. Among these 43 flare stars, there are 19 new active stars and 41 stars that have available TESS and/or K2 light curves, from which we found 931 stellar flares. We also obtained rotational or orbital periods of 34 GWAC flare stars, of which 33 are less than 5.4 days, and ephemerides of three eclipsing binaries from these light curves. Combining with low resolution spectra from LAMOST and the Xinglong 2.16m telescope, we found that $L_{\rm H\alpha}/L_{\rm bol}$ are in the saturation region in the rotation-activity diagram. From the LAMOST medium-resolution spectrum, we found that Star \#3 (HAT 178-02667) has double H$\alpha$ emissions which imply it is a binary, and two components are both active stars. Thirteen stars have flare frequency distributions (FFDs) from TESS and/or K2 light curves. These FFDs show that the flares detected by GWAC can occur at a frequency of 0.5 to 9.5 yr$^{-1}$. The impact of flares on habitable planets was also studied based on these FFDs, and flares from some GWAC flare stars may produce enough energetic flares to destroy ozone layers, but none can trigger prebiotic chemistry on their habitable planets., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

The origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is still unknown. Multi-wavelength observations during or shortly after the FRB phase would be essential to identify the counterpart of an FRB and to constrain its progenitor and environment. In this work, we investigate the brightness of the "fast optical bursts" (FOBs) associated with FRBs and the prospects of detecting them. We investigate several inverse Compton (IC) scattering processes that might produce an FOB, including both the one-zone and two-zone models. We also investigate the extension of the same mechanism of FRB emission to the optical band. We find that a detectable FOB with the current and forthcoming telescopes is possible under the IC scenarios with very special conditions. In particular, the FRB environment would need to invoke a neutron star with an extremely strong magnetic field and an extremely fast spin, or an extremely young supernova remnant (SNR) surrounding the FRB source. Furthermore, most electrons in the source are also required to have a fine-tuned energy distribution such that most of the IC energy is channeled in the optical band. We conclude that the prospect of detecting FOBs associated with FRBs is low. On the other hand, if FOBs are detected from a small fraction of FRBs, these FOBs would reveal extreme physical conditions in the FRB environments., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present our optical photometric and spectroscopical observations of GRB 140629A. A redshift of $z=2.275\pm0.043$ is measured through the metal absorption lines in our spectroscopic data. Using our photometric data and multiple observational data observed with other telescopes, we show that its optical light curve is well interpreted with the standard forward shock models in the thin shell case. Its optical-X-ray afterglow spectrum is jointly fitted with a single power-law function, yielding a photon index of $-1.90\pm 0.05$. The optical extinction and neutral hydrogen absorption of the GRB host galaxy are negligible. The fit to the light curve with the standard models shows that the ambient density is $60\pm 9$ cm$^{-3}$ and the GRB radiating efficiency is as low as $\sim 0.24\%$, likely indicating a baryonic-dominated ejecta of this GRB. This burst agrees well with the $L_{\rm p, iso}-E_p^{'}-\Gamma_0$ relation, but confidently violates those empirical relations involving geometric corrections (or jet break time). This gives rise to an issue of possible selection effect on these relations since the jet opening angle of this GRB is extremely narrow (0.04 rad)., Comment: ApJ accepted, 6 figures, 3 tables

Broad-lined type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-BL) are a subclass of rare core collapse SNe whose energy source is debated in the literature. Recently a series of investigations on SNe Ic-BL with the magnetar (plus 56Ni) model were carried out. Evidence for magnetar formation was found for the well-observed SNe Ic-BL 1998bw and 2002ap. In this paper we systematically study a large sample of SNe Ic-BL not associated with gamma-ray bursts. We use photospheric velocity data determined in a homogeneous way. We find that the magnetar+56Ni model provides a good description of the light curves and velocity evolution of our sample of SNe Ic-BL, although some SNe (not all) can also be described by the pure-magnetar model or by the two-component pure-56Ni model (3 out of 12 are unlikely explained by two-component model). In the magnetar+56Ni model, the amount of 56Ni required to explain their luminosity is significantly reduced, and the derived initial explosion energy is, in general, in accordance with neutrino heating. Some correlations between different physical parameters are evaluated and their implications regarding magnetic field amplification and the total energy reservoir are discussed., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

We report our observations of very bright prompt optical and reverse shock (RS) optical emission of GRB 140512A and analyze its multi-wavelength data observed with the {\em Swift} and {\em Fermi} missions. It is found that the joint optical-X-ray-gamma-ray spectrum with our first optical detection (R=13.09 mag) at $T_0+136$ seconds during the second episode of the prompt gamma-rays can be fit by a single power-law with index $-1.32\pm 0.01$. Our empirical fit to the afterglow lightcurves indicates that the observed bright optical afterglow with R=13.00 mag at the peak time is consistent with predictions of the RS and forward shock (FS) emission of external shock models. Joint optical-X-ray afterglow spectrum is well fit with an absorbed single power-law, with an index evolving with time from $-1.86\pm 0.01$ at the peak time to $-1.57\pm 0.01$ at late epoch, which could be due to the evolution of the ratio of the RS to FS emission fluxes. We fit the lightcurves with standard external models, and derive the physical properties of the outflow. It is found that the ratio $R_B\equiv\epsilon_{\rm B, r}/\epsilon_{\rm B, f}$ is 8187, indicating a high magnetization degree in the RS region. Measuring the relative radiation efficiency with $R_e\equiv\epsilon_{\rm e, r}/\epsilon_{\rm e, f}$, we have $R_e= 0.02$, implying the radiation efficiency of the RS is much lower than that in FS. We also show that the $R_B$ of GRBs 990123, 090102, and 130427A are similar to that of GRB 140512A and their apparent difference may be mainly attributed to the difference of the jet kinetic energy, initial Lorentz factor, and medium density among them., Comment: 11 pages in emulateapj style, 5 figures, 4 tables. Broad-lined type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-BL) are of great importance because their association with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) holds the key to deciphering the central engine of LGRBs, which refrains from being unveiled despite decades of investigation. Among the two popularly hypothesized types of central engine, i.e., black holes and strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), there is mounting evidence that the central engine of GRB-associated SNe (GRB-SNe) is rapidly rotating magnetars. Theoretical analysis also suggests that magnetars could be the central engine of SNe Ic-BL. What puzzled the researchers is the fact that light curve modeling indicates that as much as 0.2-0.5 solar mass of 56Ni was synthesized during the explosion of the SNe Ic-BL, which is unfortunately in direct conflict with current state-of-the-art understanding of magnetar-powered 56Ni synthesis. Here we propose a dynamic model of magnetar-powered SNe to take into account the acceleration of the ejecta by the magnetar, as well as the thermalization of the injected energy. Assuming that the SN kinetic energy comes exclusively from the magnetar acceleration, we find that although a major fraction of the rotational energy of the magnetar is to accelerate the SNe ejecta, a tiny fraction of this energy deposited as thermal energy of the ejecta is enough to reduce the needed 56Ni to 0.06 solar mass for both SN 1997ef and SN 2007ru. We therefore suggest that magnetars could power SNe Ic-BL both in aspects of energetics and of 56Ni synthesis., Comment: The published version

We report our very early optical observations of GRB 110530A and investigate its jet properties together with its X-ray afterglow data. A peculiar broad onset bump followed by a plateau is observed in its early R band afterglow lightcurve. The optical data in the other bands and the X-ray data are well consistent with the temporal feature of the R band lightcurve. Our joint spectral fits of the optical and X-ray data show that they are in the same regime, with a photon index of $\sim 1.70$. The optical and X-ray afterglow lightcurves are well fitted with the standard external shock model by considering a delayed energy injection component. Based on our modeling results, we find that the radiative efficiency of the GRB jet is $\sim 1\%$ and the magnetization parameter of the afterglow jet is $<0.04$ with the derived extremely low $\epsilon_B$ (the fraction of shock energy to magnetic field) of $(1.64\pm 0.25)\times 10^{-6}$. These results indicate that the jet may be matter dominated. We present a star catalogue extracted from the Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope (LUT) survey program. LUT's observable sky area is a circular belt around the Moon's north pole, and the survey program covers a preferred area for about 2400 deg$^2$ which includes a region of the Galactic plane. The data is processed with an automatic pipeline which copes with stray light contamination, artificial sources, cosmic rays, flat field calibration, photometry and so on. In the first release version, the catalogue provides high confidence sources which have been cross-identified with Tycho-2 catalogue. All the sources have signal-to-noise ratio larger than 5, and the corresponding magnitude limit is typically 14.4 mag, which can be deeper as ~16 mag if the stray light contamination is in the lowest level. A total number of 86,467 stars are recorded in the catalogue. Millisecond magnetars can be formed via several channels: core-collapse of massive stars, accretion-induced collapse of white dwarfs (WDs), double WD mergers, double neutron star (NS) mergers, and WD-NS mergers. Because the mass of ejecta from these channels could be quite different, their light curves are also expected to be diverse. We evaluate the dynamic evolution of optical transients powered by millisecond magnetars. We find that the magnetar with short spin-down timescale converts its rotational energy mostly into the kinetic energy of the transient, while the energy of a magnetar with long spin-down timescale goes into radiation of the transient. This leads us to speculate that hypernovae could be powered by magnetars with short spin-down timescales. At late times the optical transients will gradually evolve into a nebular phase because of the photospheric recession. We treat the photosphere and nebula separately because their radiation mechanisms are different. In some cases the ejecta could be light enough that the magnetar can accelerate it to a relativistic speed. It is well known that the peak luminosity of a supernova (SN) occurs when the luminosity is equal to the instantaneous energy input rate, as shown by Arnett (1979). We show that photospheric recession and relativistic motion can modify this law. The photospheric recession always leads to a delay of the peak time $t_{\mathrm{pk}}$ relative to the time $t_{\times }$ at which the SN luminosity equals the instantaneous energy input rate. Observations of very early multi-wavelength afterglows are critical to reveal the properties of the radiating fireball and its environment as well as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We report our optical observations of GRB 111228A from 95 sec to about 50 hours after the burst trigger and investigate its properties of the prompt gamma-rays and the ambient medium using our data and the data observed with {\em Swift} and {\em Fermi} missions. Our joint optical and X-ray spectral fits to the afterglow data show that the ambient medium features as low dust-to-gas ratio. Incorporating the energy injection effect, our best fit to the afterglow lightcurves with the standard afterglow model via the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique shows that $\epsilon_e=(6.9\pm 0.3)\times 10^{-2}$, $\epsilon_B=(7.73\pm 0.62)\times 10^{-6}$, $E_{\rm K}=(6.32\pm 0.86)\times 10^{53}\rm erg$, $n=0.100\pm 0.014$ cm$^{-3}$. The low medium density likely implies that the afterglow jet may be in a halo or in a hot ISM. Achromatic shallow decay segment observed in the optical and X-ray bands is well explained with the long-lasting energy injection from the central engine, which would be a magnetar with a period of about 1.92 ms inferred from the data. The $E_p$ of its time-integrated prompt gamma-ray spectrum is $\sim 26$ KeV. Using the initial Lorentz factor ($\Gamma_0=476^{+225}_{-237}$) derived from our afterglow model fit, it is found that GRB 111228A satisfies the $L_{\rm iso}-E_{\rm p,z}-\Gamma_0$ relation and bridges the typical GRBs and low luminosity GRBs in this relation., Comment: 33 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables. We reported the optical observations of GRB 121011A by 0.8-m TNT telescope at Xinglong observatory, China. The light curve of optical afterglow shows a smooth and featureless bump during the epoch of $\sim$130 sec and $\sim$5000 sec with a rising index of $1.57\pm0.28$ before the break time of $539\pm44$ sec, and a decaying index of about $1.29\pm0.07$ up to the end of our observations. Meanwhile, the X-ray light curve decays in a single power-law with a slop of about $1.51\pm0.03$ observed by $XRT$ onboard ${\rm} Swift$ from 100 sec to about 10000 sec after the burst trigger. The featureless optical light curve could be understood as an onset process under the external-shock model. The typical frequency has been below or near the optical one before the deceleration time, and the cooling frequency is located between the optical and X-ray wavelengths. The external medium density has a transition from a mixed stage of ISM and wind-type medium before the peak time to the ISM at the later phase. We describe the data processing pipeline developed to reduce the pointing observation data of Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope (LUT), which belongs to the Chang'e-3 mission of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. The pointing observation program of LUT is dedicated to monitor variable objects in a near-ultraviolet (245-345 nm) band. LUT works in lunar daytime for sufficient power supply, so some special data processing strategies have been developed for the pipeline. The procedures of the pipeline include stray light removing, astrometry, flat fielding employing superflat technique, source extraction and cosmic rays rejection, aperture and PSF photometry, aperture correction, and catalogues archiving, etc. It has been intensively tested and works smoothly with observation data. The photometric accuracy is typically ~0.02 mag for LUT 10 mag stars (30 s exposure), with errors come from background noises, residuals of stray light removing, and flat fielding related errors. We study an extensive sample of 87 GRBs for which there are well sampled and simultaneous optical and X-ray light-curves. We extract the cleanest possible signal of the afterglow component, and compare the temporal behaviors of the X-ray light-curve, observed by Swift XRT, and optical data, observed by UVOT and ground-based telescopes for each individual burst. Overall we find 62\% GRBs that are consistent with the standard afterglow model. When more advanced modeling is invoked, up to 91\% of the bursts in our sample may be consistent with the external shock model. A large fraction of these bursts are consistent with occurring in a constant interstellar density medium (ISM) (61\%) while only 39\% of them occur in a wind-like medium. Only 9 cases have afterglow light-curves that exactly match the standard fireball model prediction, having a single power law decay in both energy bands which are observed during their entire duration. In particular, for the bursts with chromatic behavior additional model assumptions must be made over limited segments of the light-curves in order for these bursts to fully agree with the external shock model. Interestingly, for 54\% of the X-ray and 40\% of the optical band observations the end of the shallow decay ($t^{\sim-0.5}$) period coincides with the jet break ($t^{\sim-p}$) time, causing an abrupt change in decay slope. The fraction of the burst that consistent with the external shock model is independent of the observational epochs in the rest frame of GRBs. The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) team recently reported the discovery of a rapidly fading optical transient source, PTF11agg. A long-lived scintillating radio counterpart was identified, but the search for a high energy counterpart showed negative results. The PTF team speculated that PTF11agg may represent a new class of relativistic outbursts. Here we suggest that a neutron star (NS)-NS merger system with a supra-massive magnetar central engine could be a possible source to power such a transient, if our line of sight is not on the jet axis direction of the system. These systems are also top candidates for gravitational wave sources to be detected in the advanced LIGO/Virgo era. We find that the PTF11agg data could be explained well with such a model, suggesting that at least some gravitational wave bursts due to NS-NS mergers may be associated with such a bright electromagnetic counterpart without a \gamma-ray trigger., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We continue our systematic statistical study on optical afterglow data of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We present the apparent magnitude distributions of early optical afterglows at different epochs (t= 10^2 s, t = 10^3 s, and 1 hour) for the optical lightcurves of a sample of 93 GRBs (the global sample), and for sub-samples with an afterglow onset bump or a shallow decay segment. For the onset sample and shallow decay sample we also present the brightness distribution at the peak time t_{p} and break time t_{b}, respectively. All the distributions can be fit with Gaussian functions. We further perform Monte Carlo simulations to infer the luminosity function of GRB optical emission at the rest-frame time 10^3 seconds, t_{p}, and t_{b}, respectively. Our results show that a single power-law luminosity function is adequate to model the data, with indices -1.40+/-0.10, -1.06+/- 0.16, and -1.54\+/- 0.22, respectively. Based on the derived rest-frame 10^3 s luminosity function, we generate the intrinsic distribution of the R-band apparent magnitude M_{R} at the observed time 10^{3} seconds post trigger, which peaks at M_{R}=22.5 mag. The fraction of GRBs whose R-band magnitude is fainter than 22 mag, and 25 mag and at the observer time 10^3 seconds are ~63% and ~25%, respectively. The detection probabilities of the optical afterglows with ground-based robotic telescopes and UVOT onboard {Swift} are roughly consistent with that inferred from this intrinsic M_{R} distribution, indicating that the variations of the dark GRB fraction among the samples with different telescopes may be due to the observational selection effect, although the existence of an intrinsically dark GRB population cannot be ruled out., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, ApJ in press

We continue our systematic statistical study of various components in gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical lightcurves. We decompose the early onset bump and the late re-brightening bump with empirical fits and analyze their statistical properties. Among the 146 GRBs that have well-sampled optical lightcurves, the onset and re-brightening bumps are observed in 38 and 26 GRBs, respectively. It is found that the typical rising and decaying slopes for both the onset and re-brightening bumps are ~1.5 and -1.15, respectively. No early onset bumps in the X-ray band are detected to be associated with the optical onset bumps, while an X-ray re-brightening bump is detected for half of the re-brightening optical bumps. The peak luminosity is anti-correlated with the peak time, L_p\propto t_{p}^{-1.81+/-0.32} and L_p\propto t_{p}^{-0.83+/-0.17} for the onset and re-brightening bumps, respectively. Both L_p and the isotropic energy release of the onset bumps are correlated with E_{\gamma, iso}, whereas no similar correlation is found for the re-brightening bumps. Taking the onset bumps as probes for the properties of the fireballs and their ambient medium, we find that the typical power-law index of the relativistic electrons is 2.5 and the medium density profile behaves as n\propto r^{-1} within the framework of the synchrotron external shock models. With the medium density profile obtained from our analysis, we also confirm the correlation between initial Lorentz factor (\Gamma_0) and E_{\gamma, iso} in our previous work. The jet component that produces the re-brightening bump seems to be on-axis and independent of the prompt emission jet component. Well-sampled optical lightcurves of 146 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are compiled from the literature. By empirical fitting we identify eight possible emission components and summarize the results in a "synthetic" lightcurve. Both optical flare and early shallow-decay components are likely related to long-term central engine activities. We focus on their statistical properties in this paper. Twenty-four optical flares are obtained from 19 GRBs. The isotropic R-band energy is smaller than 1% of $E_{\gamma, \rm iso}$. The relation between isotropic luminosities of the flares and gamma-rays follows $L^{\rm F}_{\rm R, iso}\propto L_{{\gamma}, \rm iso}^{1.11\pm 0.27}$. Later flares tend to be wider and dimmer, i.e., $w^{\rm F}\sim t^{\rm F}_{\rm p}/2$ and $L^{\rm F}_{\rm R, iso}\propto [t^{\rm F}_{\rm p}/(1+z)]^{-1.15\pm0.15}$. The detection probability of the optical flares is much smaller than that of X-ray flares. An optical shallow decay segment is observed in 39 GRBs. The relation between the break time and break luminosity is a power-law, with an index of $-0.78\pm 0.08$, similar to that derived from X-ray flares. The X-ray and optical breaks are usually chromatic, but a tentative correlation is found. We suggest that similar to the prompt optical emission that tracks $\gamma$-rays, the optical flares are also related to the erratic behavior of the central engine. The shallow decay component is likely related to a long-lasting spinning-down central engine or piling up of flare materials onto the blastwave. Since the launch of Swift satellite, the detections of high-z (z>4) long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) have been rapidly growing, even approaching the very early Universe (the record holder currently is z=8.3). The observed high-z LGRB rate shows significant excess over that estimated from the star formation history. We investigate what may be responsible for this high productivity of GRBs at high-z through Monte Carlo simulations, with effective Swif/BAT trigger and redshift detection probabilities based on current Swift/BAT sample and CGRO/BATSE LGRB sample. We compare our simulations to the Swift observations via log N-log P, peak luminosity (L) and redshift distributions. In the case that LGRB rate is purely proportional to the star formation rate (SFR), our simulations poorly reproduce the LGRB rate at z>4, although the simulated log N-log P distribution is in good agreement with the observed one. Assuming that the excess of high-z GRB rate is due to the cosmic metallicity evolution or unknown LGRB rate increase parameterized as (1+z)^delta, we find that although the two scenarios alone can improve the consistency between our simulations and observations, incorporation of them gives much better consistency. We get 0.24 (~15% of GRBs in current Swift LGRB sample based on our simulations), a window for very early Universe is opening by Swift and up-coming SVOM missions., Comment: 9 pages, including 8 figures and 1 table, one more figure added. 1RXS J201607.0251645 is identified to be an eclipsing binary for the first time. We present the preliminary observations in V band with the 0.6-m telescope for three years and the extensive observations in V and R band with the 0.8-m telescope for six nights respectively. The light curve of the system is EB type. Five light minimum times were obtained and the orbital period of 0.388058d(0.00044d) is determined. The photometric solution given by the 2003-version Wilson-Devinney program suggests the binary is a semi-detached system with the photometric mass ratio 0.895(0.006), which probably comprise a G5 primary and an oversize K5 secondary. The less massive component has completely filled up its Roche lobe, while the other almost fills its Roche lobe with the filling factor of 93.4%. The system shows a varying O'Connell effect in its phase folded diagrams from 2005 to 2007, and is X-ray luminous with log(LXLbol)3.27. Possible mechanisms to account for these two phenomena are discussed. Finally, we infer the binary may be in thermal oscillation predicted by thermal relaxation oscillation (TRO) theory or may evolve into a contact binary., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, published by RAA

We monitored the light variations of 22 weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) discovered among the X-ray sources in the field of the Taurus-Auriga cloud. The photometric variability of 12 out of these WTTS samples is confirmed. They are all proved to be in periodic variations. By using the methods of the Phase Dispersion Minimization (PDM) and Fourier analysis, the rotational periods of these stars were determined based on this observation. Most of them are found to be shorter than one day. This gives further evidences for the spin up of solar-type stars as predicted by models of angular momentum evolution of pre-main sequence stars., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures.
