Collagen films play an essential role in guided bone-regeneration (GBR) techniques, which create space, promote cell adhesion, and induce osteogenic differentiation. It is therefore crucial to design appropriate GBR films to facilitate bone regeneration. However, current electrospun collagen scaffolds used as bioactive materials have limited clinical applications due to their poor mechanical properties. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/collagen (Col) films were electrospun by mixing PVA and type I collagen solution. For the first time, the intrafibrillar mineralization of aragonite nanocrystals within the PVA/Col fibrils was achieved, resulting in the formation of a hierarchical, bioactive film. The PVA/Col–CaCO3 film exhibited good mechanical properties, with hardness and Young's modulus values of 211.6 ± 0.1 MPa and 5.6 ± 1.7 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) inoculated onto the PVA/Col–CaCO3 film demonstrated robust adhesion and proliferation. The mineralized fibrils effectively stimulated the growth of BMSCs while suppressing cell apoptosis. Besides, the PVA/Col–CaCO3 film significantly induced the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, revealing its potential biomedical applications in hard tissue engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structural color is a remarkable physical phenomenon that exists widely in nature. Unlike traditional color rendering methods, they are realized mainly through micro/nanostructures that interfere, diffract, scatter light, and exhibit long‐life and environmental‐friendly color effects. In nature, a few organisms use their color‐changing system to transmit information, such as courtship, warning, or disguise. Meanwhile, some natural inorganic minerals can also exhibit structural colors. Learning from nature, scientists have achieved large‐scale structural color design and manufacturing technology for artificial photonic crystals. Photonic crystals have a unique microstructure that forms a band gap under the action of the periodic potential field, consequently causing Bragg scattering due to the periodic arrangement of different refractive index media within them. Because of the apparent photonic band gap and the ability to form local photons at crystal defects, photonic crystals have been extensively studied in recent years and have broad application prospects in photonic fibers, optical computers, chips, and other fields. In this review, the research, properties, and applications of photonic crystals in recent years are presented, as well as insight into the future developments of photonic crystals. Reaping the benefits of the burgeoning investigation of gels in recent decades, flexible electronics based on conductive gels have been extensively explored. Gels consisting of polymer networks and solvents provide ideal platforms for fabricating flexible electronics due to their soft mechanical nature, excellent biocompatibility, water‐like environment, and ease of processing. The majority of investigations of flexible electronics primarily focus on functionalities such as sensing capability, energy density, luminance, fluctuating frequency, and so on, whereas the distinguishing feature of flexible electronics lies in its inherent deformable mechanics in comparison to metal‐ or semiconductor‐based stiff electronics. However, the comprehensive design and investigation of the mechanical properties of deformable conductive gels have not received sufficient attention to improve the overall performance of flexible electronics. A comprehensive summary is provided, listing six crucial mechanical parameters—stretchability, modulus, strength, elasticity, hysteresis, and fatigue—which exert significant influence on the functionalities of flexible electronics. This review aims to direct researchers’ attention toward the mechanical design of deformable conductive gels and presents representative strategies for their mechanical modulation. Natural structure‐forming processes found in biological systems are fantastic and perform at ambient temperatures, in contrast with anthropogenic technologies that commonly require harsh conditions. A new research direction "bioprocess‐inspired fabrication" is proposed to develop novel fabrication techniques for advanced materials. Enamel, an organic–inorganic composite biomaterial with outstanding mechanical performance and durability, is formed by repeating the basic blocks consisting of columnar hydroxyapatite or fluorapatite and an organic matrix. Inspired by the enamel formation process, a microscale additive manufacturing method is proposed for achieving a multilayered organic–inorganic columnar structure. In this approach, rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanorods, polymers, and graphene oxide (GO) are sequentially assembled in a layer‐by‐layer fashion to form an organic–inorganic structure. In particular, GO serves as a substrate for TiO2 nanorods and interacts with polymers, jointly leading to the strength of the composites. Impressively, this enamel‐like structure material has hardness (1.56 ± 0.05 GPa) and ultrahigh Young's modulus (81.0 ± 2.7 GPa) comparable to natural enamel, and viscoelastic property (0.76 ± 0.12 GPa) superior to most solid materials. Consequently, this biomimetic synthetic approach provides an in‐depth understanding for the formation process of biomaterials and also enables the exploration of a new avenue for the preparation of organic–inorganic composite materials. Throughout billions of years, biological systems have evolved sophisticated, multiscale hierarchical structures to adapt to changing environments. Biomaterials are synthesized under mild conditions through a bottom-up self-assembly process, utilizing substances from the surrounding environment, and meanwhile are regulated by genes and proteins. Additive manufacturing, which mimics this natural process, provides a promising approach to developing new materials with advantageous properties similar to natural biological materials. This review presents an overview of natural biomaterials, emphasizing their chemical and structural compositions at various scales, from the nanoscale to the macroscale, and the key mechanisms underlying their properties. Additionally, this review describes the designs, preparations, and applications of bioinspired multifunctional materials produced through additive manufacturing at different scales, including nano, micro, micro-macro, and macro levels. The review highlights the potential of bioinspired additive manufacturing to develop new functional materials and insights into future directions and prospects in this field. By summarizing the characteristics of natural biomaterials and their synthetic counterparts, this review inspires the development of new materials that can be utilized in various applications., (Copyright © 2023 Jingjiang Wei et al.)
