This paper presents a novel multilevel radio frequency (RF) pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method for all-digital transmitters (ADTx) that actively eliminates the selected harmonics of RF-PWM. Compared with existing multilevel RF-PWM techniques, this method uses several adaptive thresholds and controls the pulsewidth of the corresponding subpulses to make the selected harmonics cancel each other out and keep the fundamental frequency component proportional to input envelope. For the third-harmonic elimination, the corresponding five-level RF-PWM scheme presented in this paper shows that it can significantly relax the filtering requirements and improve the wideband performance of the ADTx. The proposed scheme is verified by extensive simulations and offline measurements. The simulations show good potential for high-frequency operation up to gigahertz ADTx. The measured results show that the third-harmonic suppression of the proposed scheme has increased with the decreasing of the time resolution for digital implementations. For a 3.80-dB peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) QPSK signal and a 6.04-dB PAPR 16QAM signal at 200-MHz carrier, the proposed scheme can achieve above −51- and −48-dBc third-harmonic suppression, respectively, when the time resolution is 50 ps and relative time resolution is 1%, and improves above 30 dBc to the existing schemes. A novel phase compensation method to improve comb filters performance by increasing DC refractive index of linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (LCFBG) is proposed. Nonlinear chirp introduced by linearly chirped mask is discussed, and then DC phase shift compensate method is proposed. Two kinds of DC phase shift LCFBGs are analyzed, which shows a good agreement with traditional discrete phase shift method. A DC phase shift comb filter is realized with the help of a micrometer-precision translation stage, which shows the feasibility to introduce DC phase shift in LCFBG. A high flattened comb filter with precise 0.8 nm channel spacing is realized with the help of a micrometer precision translation stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel method to photonic generation multiband ultra-wide band (MB-UWB) impulse radio signal based on the summation of multiple doublet pulses with different weights and proper time delays is proposed. Microwave sinusoidal signal is used to amplitude modulate a tunable laser to get multi-wavelength source. The optical signal is then phase modulation with Gaussian pulse and fed into a section of single-mode fiber (SMF). The SMF services as phase modulation to intensity modulation (PM-IM) conversion to generate Gaussian doublet pulse, and offers proper time delays to Gaussian doublet pulses with different weights. MB-UWB pulses with sidelobe suppression levels over 25 dB, central frequency from 5 to 8 GHz, 10 dB bandwidth from 2.9 to 3.8 GHz are obtained in experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel identical multiple wavelength sampled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. A phase shift between the two adjacent FBG units is achieved by increasing the direct current (DC) refractive index of the FBG. The FBG with identical reflective spectrum is optimized with a designed sampling function. DC phase shift FBGs are analyzed and fabricated, which shows a good agreement with a discrete phase shift method. A dual-wavelength (DW) filter with channel spacing 0.16 nm is fabricated, and the experiment results verified the feasibility of this proposed method. A four-wavelength filter with channel spacing 0.16 nm is then proposed and demonstrated.
