Abstract

Career building can be challenging for young surgeons, especially when topics such as lifestyle, work–life balance and subspecialization arise. Suggestions and advice from senior colleagues is very valuable but many young surgeons do not have such opportunities or are limited to a few senior surgeons. The International Microsurgery Club (IMC), in collaboration with the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, organized a combined webinar for this topic and invited world renowned microsurgery masters polled by the IMC members to join, including Prof. Peter Neligan (Emeritus from University of Washington, United States), Prof. Raja Sabapathy (Ganga Hospital, India), Dr. Gregory Buncke (The Buncke Clinic, United States), Prof. Isao Koshima (Hiroshima University Hospital, Japan), Prof. David Chwei-Chin Chuang (Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan), and Prof. Eric Santamaria (Hospital General Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez, Mexico) on May 1, 2022. Prof. Joon-Pio Hong (Asan Medical Center, South Korea) and Prof. Fu-Chan Wei (Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan) were also selected but unfortunately could not make it and were therefore invited to another event in April 2023, summarized in a recently published paper.

After a single topical administration of conbercept-loaded PenHA-Lip (PenHA-Lip/Conb), the intraocular concentration of conbercept peaked at 18.74 ± 1.09 ng/mL at 4 h, which is 11.55-fold higher than unmodified conbercept. In a laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) mouse model, PenHA-Lip/Conb eye drops three times daily for seven days inhibited CNV formation and progression without any significant tissue toxicity and achieved an equivalent effect to a single intravitreal conbercept injection.Conclusion: PenHA-Lip efficiently and safely delivered conbercept to the posterior eye segment and may be a promising noninvasive therapeutic option for nAMD. Assessing antiretroviral therapy (ART)-related weight/BMI changes is challenging, as PLWH may experience return-to-health weight gain as a result of viral suppression. This retrospective, longitudinal real-world study compared weight/BMI outcomes among overweight/obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; thus excluding return-to-health weight/BMI changes), treatment-naïve PLWH who initiated darunavir (DRV)/cobicistat (c)/emtricitabine (FTC)/tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) or DTG + FTC/TAF.Methods: Treatment-naïve PLWH with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 who initiated DRV/c/FTC/TAF or DTG + FTC/TAF (index date) had ≥ 12 months of baseline observation and ≥ 1 weight/BMI measurement in baseline and post-index periods in the Symphony Health IDV® database (07/17/2017– 12/31/2021) were included. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to balance differences in baseline characteristics between cohorts. On-treatment time-to-weight/BMI increases ≥ 5% were compared between cohorts using weighted adjusted Cox models.Results: Post-IPTW, 76 overweight/obese DRV/c/FTC/TAF-treated (mean age = 51.2 years, 30.7% female, 35.6% Black, mean baseline BMI = 33.2 kg/m2) and 88 overweight/obese DTG + FTC/TAF-treated PLWH (mean age = 51.5 years, 31.4% female, 31.4% Black, mean baseline BMI = 32.7 kg/m2) were included. The median [interquartile range] time from ART initiation to weight/BMI increase ≥ 5% was shorter for the DTG + FTC/TAF cohort (21.8 [9.9, 32.3] months) than the DRV/c/FTC/TAF cohort (median and interquartile times not reached; Kaplan–Meier rate at 21.8 months = 20.8%). Over the entire follow-up, overweight/obese PLWH initiating DTG + FTC/TAF had a more than twofold greater risk of experiencing weight/BMI increase ≥ 5% compared to those initiating DRV/c/FTC/TAF (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]=2.43 [1.02; 7.04]; p = 0.036).Conclusion: Overweight/obese PLWH who initiated DTG + FTC/TAF had significantly greater risk of weight/BMI increase ≥ 5% compared to similar PLWH who initiated DRV/c/FTC/TAF and had shorter time-to-weight/BMI increase ≥ 5%, suggesting a need for additional monitoring to assess the risk of weight gain-related cardiometabolic disease.Keywords: human immunodeficiency virus, weight gain, BMI, darunavir, dolutegravir, observational study

We aimed at evaluating the effect of CD73, an overexpressed factor in some tumors, on anti-tumor immune function in the TME of MM.Patients and Methods: We analyzed the expression of CD73 in T-, B-, and natural killer (NK)-lymphocytes and monocytes in bone marrow (BM), peripheral blood (PB) from MM patients and healthy controls, and residual CD138+ cells using flow cytometry. The anti-tumor activity of these monocytes was confirmed by co-culture with RPMI-8226 cells treated with a CD73 inhibitor. We determined the interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon (IFN)-γ levels using a cytometric bead array. Monocyte phagocytosis in cell culture sediment was then observed and measured.Results: CD73 was highly expressed in T-, B-, and NK-lymphocytes and monocytes from the BM and PB isolated from patients with MM. Compared with healthy controls, MM samples exhibited significantly higher CD73 expression and TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-10 levels in monocytes. Inhibiting CD73 in BM immune cells from MM samples significantly increased the secretion of IL-2, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, as well as the killing ability of immune cells. However, monocyte phagocytosis was seldom observed. Inhibiting CD73 in MM monocytes significantly increased the secretion of IL-2, TNF-α, and IFN-γ in monocytes and improved monocyte killing and phagocytosis.Conclusion: Monocytes from MM exhibited weakened anti-tumor effects, and CD73 was involved in forming an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Although they are the hotspots for therapy of antibiotic-resistant strains nowadays, natural phage applications encounter some challenges such as limited host range and bacterial resistance to phages. Synthetic biology, one of the most dramatic directions in the recent 20-years study of microbiology, has generated numerous methods and tools and has contributed a lot to understanding phage evolution, engineering modification, and controlling phage-bacteria interactions. In order to better modify and apply phages by using synthetic biology techniques in the future, in this review, we comprehensively introduce various strategies on engineering or modification of phage genome and rebooting of recombinant phages, summarize the recent researches and potential directions of phage synthetic biology, and outline the current application of engineered phages in practice.Keywords: phage, synthetic biology, engineering, rebooting, phage therapy, phage application

However, MTX has an extremely low solubility in water, and the side effects caused by its delivery mode restrict its curative effect. In this study, we designed a dissolving microneedles array (DMNA) containing MTX nanocrystals (MTX-NCs) (MTX-NC@DMNA) to improve the treatment of RA. DMNA-based drug delivery combines the advantages of patient compliance with the use of transdermal drug delivery systems and high-efficiency injection administration; thus, it can mitigate the side effects that result from current administration routes. Carrier-free and surfactant-free MTX-NCs were prepared to overcome bioavailability limitations and poor drug loading problems.Methods: The MTX-NCs prepared by reverse solvent precipitation method was encapsulated in the DMNA. The morphology, mechanical properties, safety, stability and in vivo dissolution were evaluated, and its pharmacodynamic characteristics were assessed in a rat model of RA.Results: The particle size of the MTX-NCs was 148.1 ± 10.1 nm. The MTX-NC@DMNA were found to be rigid enough to penetrate the skin and deliver the drug successfully. The results indicated effective skin recovery after removal of the DMNA. It was found that the MTX-NC@DMNA significantly reduced foot swelling in the rats and regulated the balance in the levels of related cytokines. It also reduced pathological damage to the synovium, joint, and cartilage, and effectively alleviated organ injury in the rats.Conclusion: Transdermal administration of MTX-NC@DMNA may be an effective approach for treating RA.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: nanocrystals, inflammation, dissolving microneedles array, transdermal, rheumatoid arthritis

The disease-free survival (DFS) curve was depicted by the Kaplan–Meier method, and the difference between the two groups was tested using the log rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were performed to identify independent risk factors for DFS. Additionally, three propensity score analyses were performed to minimise the potential confounding factors to facilitate a more reliable conclusion. Adverse events (AEs) were assessed according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 4.0.Results: The 1-and 2-year DFS rates of the TACE plus TKI treatment group were 45.5% and 34.9%, respectively, which were significantly better than those of the TACE alone group (26.8% and 18.3%, respectively). Multivariate analysis identified adjuvant TACE plus TKI treatment as an independent prognostic factor for DFS (hazard ratio: 0.611, 95% confidence interval: 0.408– 0.915, P=0.017). Further analysis based on the various propensity score methods yielded similar results. Subgroup analysis showed that patients with tumour diameter ≥ 5 cm, tumour number < 3, absence of hepatic vein tumour thrombus and bile duct tumour thrombus, ruptured tumours, and stage IIIB could benefit more from TACE plus TKI treatment (all P< 0.05). Some patients (33.33%) experienced grade ≥ 3 AEs in the TACE plus TKI group.Conclusion: TACE plus TKI treatment can reduce the incidence of early recurrence with tolerable adverse events in HCC patients at high risk of recurrence after hepatectomy and may be an appropriate option in postoperative anti-recurrence treatment.Keywords: hepatocellular carcinoma, resection, TACE, TKI, early-recurrence

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. The patients were divided into the lenvatinib plus camrelizumab group (n=21) and the lenvatinib group (n=27). Primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and secondary endpoints were the objective response rate (ORR) and adverse events (AEs).Results: The median follow-up time was 8.4 months. The median OS was not obtained. The median PFS of lenvatinib plus camrelizumab group was significantly longer than that of lenvatinib group (8.0 months vs 4.0 months, p=0.011). Compared with lenvatinib group, lenvatinib plus camrelizumab group had higher ORR (28.57% vs 7.41%) and disease control rate (DCR) (71.43% vs 51.85%). The most common adverse events (AEs) included hand-foot skin reaction, hypertensions and abnormal hepatic function damage. Overall, 23.81% and 25.93% of patients experienced grade ≥ 3AEs in the lenvatinib plus camrelizumab group and the lenvatinib group, respectively.Conclusion: Lenvatinib plus camrelizumab as post-progression treatment is effective and safe for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma with PD.Keywords: advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, lenvatinib, PD-1

18. Dynamic, Real-Time, Fiducial-Free Surgical Navigation with Integrated Multimodal Optical Imaging

Abstract

Surgeons need surgical navigation and intraoperative imaging for accurate surgery. However, current clinical surgical navigation systems have many drawbacks, including the need of fiducial markers, the lack of real-time registration update, and lack of functional imaging. We have developed a novel Real-time Fluorescence Imaging Topography Scanning (RFITS) system that delivers simultaneous real-time multimodal optical imaging, CT-to-Optical image registration, and dynamic fiducial-free surgical navigation. The RFITS prototype was characterized to evaluate system performance and used in biological models for fluorescence-guided surgery. We also performed multimodal imaging of a casting life-sized human cranial model and investigated image registration between intraoperative optical image data and preoperative tomographic image data. The RFITS prototype successfully integrated real-time intraoperative optical imaging and dynamic CT-based surgical navigation, offering complementary functional and structural information for surgical guidance. Our results demonstrated that the RFITS system can provide accurate multimodal surgical guidance in preclinical studies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a system capable of concurrent intraoperative fluorescence imaging and dynamic, real-time, CT-based navigation, whereas multiple modalities are accurately registered.

However, the expression profile and function of circular RNA PVT1 (circPVT1) in HCC are not fully addressed. Thus, we aimed to probe into the function of circPVT1 in HCC development.Methods: The levels of circPVT1, microRNA-377 (miR-377) and transcripts encoding tripartite motif containing 23 (TRIM23) were determined by qRT-PCR. The stability and localization of circPVT1 were examined by RNase R digestion assay and subcellular fraction assay, respectively. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were evaluated by MTT assay and flow cytometry analysis, respectively. The relationship between miR-377 and circPVT1 or TRIM23 was determined by dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP). The protein expression of TRIM23 was measured by Western blot. The glycolysis level was assessed by specific kits and Seahorse Extracellular Flux Analyzer XF96. The function of circPVT1 in vivo was investigated in a murine xenograft model.Results: CircPVT1 and TRIM23 levels were elevated, while miR-377 was decreased in HCC. CircPVT1 knockdown restrained proliferation and glycolysis, but enhanced apoptosis in HCC cells. CircPVT1 could bind to miR-377 and inhibition of miR-377 restored circPVT1 knockdown-mediated effect on HCC cells. TRIM23 was certified as a target of miR-377, and TRIM23 upregulation overturned the influence of miR-377 upregulation or circPVT1 silence on HCC progression. We aimed to compare the prognosis of IGBC patients who underwent simultaneous radical resection (SIR) vs salvage radical resection (SAR).Patients and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data for IGBC patients admitted to Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital from January 2000 to May 2016. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan–Meier (univariate) and COX regression (multivariate) analyses.Results: Eighty-four patients with IGBC underwent radical resection; 43/84 underwent SIR, and 41/84 underwent SAR. Compared with SIR, the SAR group was more likely to receive comprehensive preoperative radiographic evaluation, port-site excision, and have more lymph nodes excised (all P < 0.05). Kaplan–Meier analysis indicated that the prognosis in the SAR group was better than that in SIR (overall survival: P = 0.050, recurrence-free survival: P = 0.028). Regression analysis indicated that the type of radical resection (SIR/SAR) was not an independent prognostic factor (overall survival: P = 0.737, recurrence-free survival: P = 0.957).Conclusion: Patients undergoing SAR had non-inferior survival compared with SIR. Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Abstract Background In Ontario, FOLFIRINOX (FFX) and gemcitabine + nab‐paclitaxel (GnP) have been publicly funded for first‐line unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer (uLAPC) or metastatic pancreatic cancer (mPC) since April 2015. We examined the real‐world effectiveness and safety of FFX vs GnP for advanced pancreatic cancer, and in uLAPC and mPC. Methods Patients receiving first‐line FFX or GnP from April 2015 to March 2017 were identified in the New Drug Funding Program database. Baseline characteristics and outcomes were obtained through the Ontario Cancer Registry and other population‐based databases. Overall survival (OS) was assessed using Kaplan‐Meier and weighted Cox proportional hazard models, weighted by the inverse propensity score adjusting for baseline characteristics. Weighted odds ratio (OR) for hospitalization and emergency department visits (EDV) were estimated from weighted logistic regression models. Results For 1130 patients (632 FFX, 498 GnP), crude median OS was 9.6 and 6.1 months for FFX and GnP, respectively. Weighted OS was improved for FFX vs GnP (HR = 0.77, 0.70‐0.85). Less frequent EDV and hospitalization were observed in FFX (EDV: 67.8%; Hospitalization: 49.2%) than GnP (EDV: 77.7%; Hospitalization: 59.3%). More frequent febrile neutropenia‐related hospitalization was observed in FFX (5.8%) than GnP (3.3%). Risk of EDV and hospitalization were significantly lower for FFX vs GnP (EDV: OR = 0.68, P = .0001; Hospitalization: OR = 0.76, P = .002), whereas the risk of febrile neutropenia‐related hospitalization was significantly higher (OR = 2.12, P = .001). Outcomes for uLAPC and mPC were similar. Conclusion In the real world, FFX had longer OS, less frequent all‐cause EDV and all‐cause hospitalization, but more febrile neutropenia‐related hospitalization compared to GnP.

Abstract

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a devastating potential complication of axillary lymphadenectomy and radiotherapy. Several effective surgical treatment measures now exist, including lymphaticovenicular anastomosis (LVA), vascularized lymph node transplant (VLNT), and vascularized lymph vessel transplant (VLVT) for fluid-predominant disease, and liposuction and radical excision for solid-predominant disease. Super-microsurgical LVA is of particular interest, owing to its minimally invasive nature and highly favorable outcomes in the hands of experienced supermicrosurgeons. As LVA techniques are refined and improved, interest is rising in utilizing it to prevent the manifestation of disease in the first place. Lymphatic microsurgical preventive healing approach (LYMPHA), also known as immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR), is the most widely used approach. It involves performing axillary LVA immediately following axillary lymphadenectomy. While preliminary results are favorable, the high-pressure proximal axillary venous branches used in ILR and the site’s vulnerability to damage from radiotherapy endanger the long-term patency of these anastomoses. Moreover, a theoretical oncologic concern exists regarding creating a direct conduit for the remaining malignant cells in the axilla into the circulation. Finally, coordinating ILR with axillary lymphadenectomy creates significant logistical challenges. Delayed, distally-based LVA (DD-LVA) has emerged as an alternative method that avoids these issues. This article presents an overview of the development of preemptive lymphatic reconstruction, and the senior author’s approach to the novel technique of DD-LVA.

The mechanisms of erianin are numerous, and most of them induce cancer cell apoptosis that may be intrinsic or extrinsic and modulate the ROS/JNK signaling pathways. Invasion, migration, and angiogenesis represent emerging targets of erianin and support its anticancer properties. Several studies proposed improved hemodynamic effects of carvedilol compared with propanolol. Our study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials comparing carvedilol with variceal banding ligation (VBL).Methods: Studies were searched on online databases MEDLINE, EMBASE(Ovid), the Cochrane Library, Chinese Wanfang Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure between January 2000 and May 2018. Incidence of bleeding and mortality were main outcome measures. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were conducted to ensure the robustness of pooled estimates.Results: Ten randomized control trials including 1,269 cirrhotic patients were chosen. Compared with VBL, carvedilol showed similar preventive efficacy of risk ratios (RRs) in variceal bleeding, and bleeding-related mortality over different follow-up periods from 6 months to 24 months. Also, significant differences between carvedilol and VBL in overall mortality and other causes of mortality were failed to be found. Abstract

Background:. Liposuction is the treatment of choice for solid predominant extremity lymphedema. The classic lymphedema liposuction technique does not remove skin excess created following bulk removal. The skin excess is presumed to resolve with spontaneous skin contracture. We investigated the technique of simultaneously performing liposuction with immediate skin excision in patients with solid predominant lymphedema and compared the outcome with that from the classic technique. Methods:. Modified liposuction with skin excision (mLIPO) and standard liposuction without skin excision (sLIPO) were offered to patients with solid predominant extremity lymphedema. Skin traction of 4 cm and undulating skin mobility constituted positive “flying squirrel” sign. Patients with negative “flying squirrel” sign were excluded. mLIPO patients underwent skin excision. Surgical outcomes and postoperative complications were compared. Results:. The study enrolled 15 and 26 patients into the sLIPO and mLIPO groups, respectively. mLIPO patients demonstrated statistically significant decrease in seroma/hematoma, contour irregularity, and skin necrosis, while experiencing increased procedural satisfaction. Conclusions:. Skin excision following liposuction for solid predominant lymphedema is safe. It decreases postoperative complication and improves surgical outcome.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. 30. Influence of Feeding Type and Nosema ceranae Infection on the Gut Microbiota of Apis cerana Workers

Abstract

ABSTRACT The gut microbiota plays an essential role in the health of bees. To elucidate the effect of feed and Nosema ceranae infection on the gut microbiota of honey bee (Apis cerana), we used 16S rRNA sequencing to survey the gut microbiota of honey bee workers fed with sugar water or beebread and inoculated with or without N. ceranae. The gut microbiota of A. cerana is dominated by Serratia, Snodgrassella, and Lactobacillus genera. The overall gut microbiota diversity was show to be significantly differential by feeding type. N. ceranae infection significantly affects the gut microbiota only in bees fed with sugar water. Higher abundances of Lactobacillus, Gluconacetobacter, and Snodgrassella and lower abundances of Serratia were found in bees fed with beebread than in those fed with sugar water. N. ceranae infection led to a higher abundance of Snodgrassella and a lower abundance of Serratia in sugar-fed bees. Imputed bacterial Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways showed the significant metagenomics functional differences by feeding and N. ceranae infections. Furthermore, A. cerana workers fed with sugar water showed lower N. ceranae spore loads but higher mortality than those fed with beebread. The cumulative mortality was strongly positive correlated (rho = 0.61) with the changes of overall microbiota dissimilarities by N. ceranae infection. Both feeding types and N. ceranae infection significantly affect the gut microbiota in A. cerana workers. Beebread not only provides better nutrition but also helps establish a more stable gut microbiota and therefore protects bees in response to N. ceranae infection. IMPORTANCE The gut microbiota plays an essential role in the health of bees. Scientific evidence suggests that diet and infection can affect the gut microbiota and modulate the health of the gut; however, the interplay between those two factors and the bee gut microbiota is not well known. In this study, we used a high-throughput sequencing method to monitor the changes of gut microbiota associated with both feeding types and Nosema ceranae infection. Our results showed that the gut microbiota composition and diversity of Asian honey bee were significantly associated with both feeding types and the N. ceranae infection. More interestingly, bees fed with beebread showed higher microbiota stability and lower mortality rates than those fed with sugar water when infected by N. ceranae. Those data suggest that beebread has the potential not only to provide better nutrition but also help to establish a more stable gut microbiota to protect bees against N. ceranae infection.

The Tat peptide-decorated gelatin-siloxane (Tat-GS) nanoparticle has been demonstrated to be biocompatible as a vector, and to have enhanced gene transfection efficiency compared with the commercial reagent. This study investigated whether intracisternal administration of Tat-GS nanoparticles carrying the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) gene can attenuate cerebral vasospasm and improve neurological outcomes in a rat model of subarachnoid hemorrhage.Method: A series of gelatin-siloxane nanoparticles with controlled size and surface charge was synthesized by a two-step sol-gel process, and then modified with the Tat peptide. The efficiency of Tat-GS nanoparticle-mediated gene transfer of pLXSN-CGRP was investigated in vitro using brain capillary endothelial cells and in vivo using a double-hemorrhage rat model. For in vivo analysis, we delivered Tat-GS nanoparticles encapsulating pLXSN-CGRP intracisternally using a double-hemorrhage rat model.Results: In vitro, Tat-GS nanoparticles encapsulating pLXSN-CGRP showed 1.71 times higher sustained CGRP expression in endothelial cells than gelatin-siloxane nanoparticles encapsulating pLXSN-CGRP, and 6.92 times higher CGRP expression than naked pLXSN-CGRP. However, there were no significant differences in pLXSN-CGRP entrapment efficiency and cellular uptake between the Tat-GS nanoparticles and gelatin-siloxane nanoparticles. On day 7 of the in vivo experiment, the data indicated better neurological outcomes and reduced vasospasm in the subarachnoid hemorrhage group that received Tat-GS nanoparticles encapsulating pLXSN-CGRP than in the group receiving Tat-GS nanoparticles encapsulating pLXSN alone because of enhanced vasodilatory CGRP expression in cerebrospinal fluid.Conclusion: Overexpression of CGRP attenuated vasospasm and improved neurological outcomes in an experimental rat model of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Abstract

A Cu-Co ore from Katinga Province, the Republic of Congo containing 1.5% Co and 1.6% Cu was tested to determine the leachability of Cu and Co using sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide mixtures at different conditions. Without hydrogen peroxide, the maximum extraction of copper and cobalt were found to be ~80% and ~15%, respectively when the acid concentration was varied between 0.36 - 1.1M. When hydrogen peroxide was added (0.008-0.042M), Cu recovery was enhanced to ~90%. Recoveries of ~90% of Co could be achieved at 20ºC, using leachants consisting of 0.36M sulphuric acid and 0.025M hydrogen peroxide after 3 hours. The reaction time to reach 90% Co extraction was reduced to less than 2 hours at 30ºC. Stabcal modelling of the Eh-pH diagrams shows the importance of hydrogen peroxide as a reductant. The decrease of solution potential (300-350 mV) by adding hydrogen peroxide was confirmed by Eh measurements during the tests. The leaching follows the shrinking core model kinetics, where the rate constant is linearly dependent on hydrogen peroxide concentration in the range 0-0.025M and proportional to (1/r2) where r is the average radius of the mineral particles. The activation energy for the leaching process is 72.3 kJ/mol.

Abstract

Analyzing the effects of space weather on aviation is a new and developing topic. It has been commonly accepted that the flight time of the polar flights may increase during solar proton events because the flights have to change their route to avoid the high-energy particles. However, apart from such phenomenon, researches related to the flight time during space weather events is very rare. Based on the analyses of 39 representative international air routes around westerlies, it is found that 97.44% (94.87%) of the commercial airplanes on the westbound (eastbound) air routes reveal shorter (longer) flight time during solar proton events compared to those during quiet periods, and the averaged magnitude of change in flight time is ~10 min or 0.21%-4.17% of the total flight durations. Comparative investigations reassure the certainty of such phenomenon that the directional differences in flight time are still incontrovertible regardless of over-land routes (China-Europe) or over-sea routes (China-Western America). Further analyses suggest that the solar proton events associated atmospheric heating will change the flight durations by weakening certain atmospheric circulations, such as the polar jet stream. While the polar jet stream will not be obviously altered during solar flares so that the directional differences in flight time are not found. Besides the conventional space weather effects already known, this paper is the first report that indicates a distinct new scenario of how the solar proton events affect flight time. Abstract

Solar flare is one of the severest solar activities on the sun, and it has many important impacts on the near-earth space. It has been found that flight arrival delays will increase during solar flare. However, the detailed intrinsic mechanism of how solar flares influence the delays is still unknown. Based on 5-years huge amount of flight data, here we comprehensively analyze the flight departure delays during 57 solar flares. It is found that the averaged flight departure delay time during solar flares increased by 20.68% (7.67 min) compared to those during quiet periods. It is also shown that solar flare related flight delays reveal apparent time and latitude dependencies. Flight delays during dayside solar flares are more serious than those during nightside flares, and the longer (shorter) delays tend to occur in the lower (higher) latitude airport. Further analyses suggest that flight delay time and delay rate would be directly modulated by the solar intensity (soft X-ray flux) and the Solar Zenith Angle. For the first time, these results indicate that the communication interferences caused by solar flares will directly affect flight departure delay time and delay rate. Abstract

Although the sun is really far away from us, some solar activities could still influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems on Earth. Those time-varying conditions in space caused by the sun are also called space weather, as the atmospheric conditions that can affect weather on the ground. It is known that aviation activities can be affected during space weather events, but the exact effects of space weather on aviation are still unclear. Especially how the flight delays, the top topic concerned by most people, will be affected by space weather has never been thoroughly researched. By analyzing huge amount of flight data (~5X106 records), for the first time, we demonstrate that space weather events could have systematically modulating effects on flight delays. The average arrival delay time and 30-minute delay rate during space weather events are significantly increased by 81.34% and 21.45% respectively compared to those during quiet periods. The evident negative correlation between the yearly flight regularity rate and the yearly mean total sunspot number during 22 years also confirms such delay effects. Further studies indicate that the interference in communication and navigation caused by geomagnetic field fluctuations and ionospheric disturbances associated with the space weather events will increase the flight delay time and delay rate. These results expand the traditional field of space weather research and could also provide us with brand new views for improving the flight delay predications., Comment: submitted to science advances

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of $\phi$-meson production in asymmetric Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the $\phi\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel at midrapidity $|\eta|<0.35$. Features of $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Cu, Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the $\phi$ meson in Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$, $\phi$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for $\phi$ mesons measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is well described by a (2+1)D viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity $\eta/s=1/4\pi$., Comment: 412 authors from 76 institutions, 16 pages, 12 figures, 9 tables, 2012 data. v2 is version accepted for publication by Physical Review C. Abstract

The measurement of the direct-photon spectrum from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV is presented by the PHENIX collaboration using the external-photon-conversion technique for 0\%--93\% central collisions in a transverse-momentum ($p_T$) range of 0.8--10 GeV/$c$. An excess of direct photons, above prompt-photon production from hard-scattering processes, is observed for $p_T<6$ GeV/$c$. Nonprompt direct photons are measured by subtracting the prompt component, which is estimated as $N_{\rm coll}$-scaled direct photons from $p$$+$$p$ collisions at 200 GeV, from the direct-photon spectrum. Abstract

Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second- and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients $v_2$ and $v_3$ for midrapidity ($|\eta|<0.35$) charged hadrons in 0\%--5\% central $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 105}, 024901 (2022)]. This paper extends these measurements of $v_2$ to all centralities in $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, as well as $p$$+$$p$ collisions, as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of $v_2$ is quantified as the ratio $R$ of $v_2$ between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for $0.5$$<$$p_T$$<$$1$ and $2$$<$$p_T$$<$$2.5$ GeV/$c$. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed $v_2$ in most-central to midcentral $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Au, and peripheral $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in AMPT than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed $R$ for $0.5$$<$$p_T$$<$$1$ GeV/$c$, but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for $2$$<$$p_T$$<$$2.5$ GeV/$c$., Comment: 393 authors from 72 institutions, 14 pages, 10 figures, 2014, 2015, and 2016 data. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the $\phi$ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured $\phi$ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au, as well as $d$$+$Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of $\phi$ mesons at midrapidity may be different in $p$$+$Al versus $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in $p$$+$Al collisions., Comment: 371 authors from 72 institutions, 13 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables, 2014 and 2015 data. v2 is version accepted for publication Physical Review C. Abstract

We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$ of direct-photon production in $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity ($|\eta|<0.25$) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At relativistic energies, direct photons are dominantly produced from the initial quark-gluon hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force at leading order. Therefore, at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, where leading-order-effects dominate, these measurements provide clean and direct access to the gluon helicity in the polarized proton in the gluon-momentum-fraction range $0.02

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the functional and oncological outcomes of anterolateral thigh flap reconstruction for salvage laryngopharyngectomy after concurrent chemoradiotherapy for patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma. MATERIALS/METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent pharyngoesophageal reconstruction using anterolateral thigh flap after salvage laryngopharyngectomy for recurrent hypopharyngeal carcinoma between June 2003 and May 2010 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The perioperative morbidity, mortality, functional outcomes, and oncological outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: 33 patients were entered into the study. The mean follow-up time was 19.5±12.3 months. Recurrent pathological TNM stages included 3 (9.1%), 2 (6.1%), and 28 (84.8%) patients with stage II, III, and IV disease, respectively. Mean ICU stay was 10.3 days and the mean hospital stay was 39.9 days. Peri-operative mortality occurred in one patient (3%). 16 patients (48.5%) developed recipient site complications. Among them, 14 patients (42.4%) developed fistulas and 9 patients (27.3%) developed strictures. Except for 4 patients (12.1%), all achieved varying degree of oral intake with 29 patients (60.6%) being completely independent from tube feeding. The mean interval to start oral intake was 15.1 days. The 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival rates were 51.8% and 53.7%, respectively. The pN status is an independent predictor of overall survival and disease-free survival (P = 0.027 and 0.038, respectively). CONCLUSION: Pharyngoesophageal reconstruction after salvage laryngopharyngectomy remains challenging even in the experienced hands. Reconstructive microsurgeons who are prepared to take on these cases should be equally well prepared to manage the potential postoperative complications.
