1. Organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures of polycrystalline perylene diimide decorated ZnO nanorods highly enhanced dual sensing performance of UV light/CO gas sensors

Abstract: Organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures-based dual light-detecting/gas-sensing devices were fabricated. In this research, polycrystalline perylene diimide (PDI) membrane was coated on ZnO nanorods (NRs), functioning as sensing nanocomposites. Multiple material analyses including scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) indicate that organic perylene diimide was successfully deposited on ZnO NRs, forming organic/inorganic membrane on the sensing device. To examine the influence of organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructure on photo-sensing and gas-sensing behaviors, UV light detection and CO gas sensing impulse response were measured. Results reveal that organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructure can effectively enhance UV light and CO gas dual-sensing properties with addition of PDI. The coating of organic PDI on the ZnO NRs not only improves the gas interaction capability and gas-sensing stability but also enhances the UV absorption efficiency. Owing to advantages of low cost, simple fabrication, compact size, and device stability, hybrid PDI/ZnO organic/inorganic light/gas dual-sensing devices are promising for future portable hazardous light and gas sensing applications.

2. Hygroscopic elongation of moisture-responsive polyamide 6 fibers copolymerized with polyetherdiamine and adipic acid

Abstract: Smart materials represent an emerging and highly exploited category, particularly in the creation of textiles that can sense and respond to various external stimuli, such as temperature or humidity. This study introduces for the first time the hygroscopic elongation and drying shrinkage properties of stimulus-responsive single-component polyamide (PA) fibers copolymerized with polyetherdiamine and diethylenetriamine (DETA). PA copolymers containing 5–15% polyetherdiamine were comprehensively characterized, including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), relative viscosity, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. Subsequently, these PA copolymers were successfully melt-spun into fibers and knitted into double-layered fabrics. PA fibers containing 15% polyetherdiamine showed significant results, with a moisture-absorbing elongation of 15.6% and a drying shrinkage of 94.9%. The Qmax and moisture regain of the PA fabric are 0.206 W·cm–2 and 4.4%, respectively. These moisture-driven, fiber-based smart textiles exhibit changes in breathability and shape retention at different humidity levels, thereby maintaining a more comfortable microclimate. Such textiles have great potential for widespread use in clothing, helping to improve comfort and adaptability.

3. Dramatically Enhanced Valley‐Polarized Emission by Alloying and Electrical Tuning of Monolayer WTe2xS2(1‐x) Alloys at Room Temperature with 1T′‐WTe2‐Contact

Abstract: Abstract Monolayer ternary tellurides based on alloying different transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can result in new two‐dimensional (2D) materials ranging from semiconductors to metals and superconductors with tunable optical and electrical properties. Semiconducting WTe2xS2(1‐x) monolayer possesses two inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone, each valley coupling selectively with circularly polarized light (CPL). The degree of valley polarization (DVP) under the excitation of CPL represents the purity of valley polarized photoluminescence (PL), a critical parameter for opto‐valleytronic applications. Here, new strategies to efficiently tailor the valley‐polarized PL from semiconducting monolayer WTe2xS2(1‐x) at room temperature (RT) through alloying and back‐gating are presented. The DVP at RT is found to increase drastically from < 5% in WS2 to 40% in WTe0.12S1.88 by Te‐alloying to enhance the spin‐orbit coupling. Further enhancement and control of the DVP from 40% up to 75% is demonstrated by electrostatically doping the monolayer WTe0.12S1.88 via metallic 1T′‐WTe2 electrodes, where the use of 1T′‐WTe2 substantially lowers the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and weakens the Fermi‐level pinning of the electrical contacts. The demonstration of drastically enhanced DVP and electrical tunability in the valley‐polarized emission from 1T′‐WTe2/WTe0.12S1.88 heterostructures paves new pathways towards harnessing valley excitons in ultrathin valleytronic devices for RT applications.

4. p21CIP/WAF1 saRNA inhibits proliferative vitreoretinopathy in a rabbit model

Abstract: Purpose Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a disease process resulting from proliferation of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in the vitreous and periretinal area, leading to periretinal membrane formation and traction and eventually to postoperative failure after vitreo-retinal surgery for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). The present study was designed to test the therapeutic potential of a p21CIP/WAF1 (p21) inducing saRNA for PVR. Methods A chemically modified p21 saRNA (RAG1-40-53) was tested in cultured human RPE cells for p21 induction and for the inhibition of cell proliferation, migration and cell cycle progression. RAG1-40-53 was further conjugated to a cholesterol moiety and tested for pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in rabbit eyes and for therapeutic effects after intravitreal administration in a rabbit PVR model established by injecting human RPE cells. Results RAG1-40-53 (0.3 mg, 1 mg) significantly induced p21 expression in RPE cells and inhibited cell proliferation, the progression of cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase and TGF-β1 induced migration. After a single intravitreal injection into rabbit eyes, cholesterol-conjugated RAG1-40-53 exhibited sustained concentration in the vitreal humor beyond at least 8 days and prevented the progression of established PVR. Conclusion p21 saRNA could represent a novel therapeutics for PVR by exerting a antiproliferation and antimigration effect on RPE cells.

7. Coupling of cell growth modulation to asymmetric division and cell cycle regulation in Caulobacter crescentus.

Abstract: In proliferating bacteria, growth rate is often assumed to be similar between daughter cells. However, most of our knowledge of cell growth derives from studies on symmetrically dividing bacteria. In many α-proteobacteria, asymmetric division is a normal part of the life cycle, with each division producing daughter cells with different sizes and fates. Here, we demonstrate that the functionally distinct swarmer and stalked daughter cells produced by the model α-proteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus can have different average growth rates under nutrient-replete conditions despite sharing an identical genome and environment. The discrepancy in growth rate is due to a growth slowdown associated with the cell cycle stage preceding DNA replication (the G1 phase), which initiates in the late predivisional mother cell before daughter cell separation. Both progenies experience a G1-associated growth slowdown, but the effect is more severe in swarmer cells because they have a longer G1 phase. Activity of SpoT, which produces the (p)ppGpp alarmone and extends the G1 phase, accentuates the cell cycle-dependent growth slowdown. Collectively, our data identify a coupling between cell growth, the G1 phase, and asymmetric division that C. crescentus may exploit for environmental adaptation through SpoT activity. This coupling differentially modulates the growth rate of functionally distinct daughter cells, thereby altering the relative abundance of ecologically important G1-specific traits within the population. 8. HBV X protein-based therapeutic vaccine accelerates viral antigen clearance by mobilizing monocyte infiltration into the liver in HBV carrier mice

Abstract: Abstract Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) persistently infected about 250 million people worldwide, and a curative treatment remains an unmet medical need. Among many approaches to treat chronic hepatitis B (CHB), therapeutic vaccines have been developed for two decades, but none have yielded promising results in clinical trials. Therefore, dissection of HBV clearance mechanisms during therapeutic vaccination in appropriate models, which could give rise to new curative therapies, is urgently needed. Growing evidence indicates that prolonged and intensive exposure of antigen-specific T cells to viral antigens is a major cause of T cell exhaustion, and decreases anti-HBV immunity efficacy of therapeutic vaccination. HBV X protein (HBx) is expressed at low levels, and the understanding of its immunogenicity and potential in therapeutic CHB vaccines is limited. Methods HBV genome sequences from CHB patients were cloned into a pAAV plasmid backbone and transfected into immunocompetent mouse hepatocytes through hydrodynamic injection. Mice carrying > 500 IU/mL serum HBV surface antigen (HBs) for more than 4 weeks were considered HBV carriers mimicking human CHB and received 3 doses of weekly HBx vaccine by subcutaneous immunization. Serum HBV clearance was evaluated by monitoring serum HBs and HBV-DNA titers. Residual HBV in the liver was evaluated by western blotting for HBV core antigen. The splenic antigen-specific T cell response was quantified by a 15-mer overlapping peptide-stimulated interferon-γ enzyme-linked immunospot assay. Blood and hepatic immune cells were quantified by flow cytometric analysis. Results Our HBx-based vaccine induced systemic HBx-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses in HBV carrier mice and demonstrated significant HBs and HBV-DNA elimination. The protective effect persisted for at least 30 days without additional booster immunization. Different infiltrating myeloid cell subsets, each with distinctive roles during immune-mediated HBV clearance, were found in the liver of vaccinated mice. During vaccine therapy, inflammatory monocyte depletion resulted in sustained HBV clearance inhibition, whereas phagocytic monocyte-derived macrophage and Kupffer cell elimination resulted in only transient inhibition of vaccine-induced HBV clearance. Conclusions We report the potential role of HBx as a major immunogen in an HBV therapeutic vaccine and the significance of a liver-infiltrating monocyte subset during hepatic viral clearance.

Abstract: Adverse drug reactions (ADR) remain the major problems in healthcare. Most severe ADR are unpredictable, dose-independent and termed as type B idiosyncratic reactions. Recent pharmacogenomic studies have demonstrated the strong associations between severe ADR and genetic markers, including specific HLA alleles (e.g., HLA-B*15:02/HLA-B*57:01/HLA-A*31:01 for carbamazepine-induced severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions [SCAR], HLA-B*58:01 for allopurinol-SCAR, HLA-B*57:01 for abacavir-hypersensitivity, HLA-B*13:01 for dapsone/co-trimoxazole-induced SCAR, and HLA-A*33:01 for terbinafine-induced liver injury), drug metabolism enzymes (such as CYP2C9*3 for phenytoin-induced SCAR and missense variant of TPMT/NUDT15 for thiopurine-induced leukopenia), drug transporters (e.g., SLCO1B1 polymorphism for statin-induced myopathy), and T cell receptors (Sulfanilamide binding into the CDR3/Vα of the TCR 1.3). This mini review article aims to summarize the current knowledge of pharmacogenomics of severe ADR, and the potentially clinical use of these genetic markers for avoidance of ADR.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. METHODS: GARFIELD-VTE is a prospective, non-interventional observational study of real-world treatment practices. We aimed to capture the 36-month clinical outcomes of 10,679 patients with objectively confirmed VTE enrolled between May 2014 and January 2017 from 415 sites in 28 countries. FINDINGS: A total of 6582 (61.6 %) patients had DVT alone, 4097 (38.4 %) had PE ± DVT. At baseline, 98.1 % of patients received anticoagulation (AC) with or without other modalities of therapy. The proportion of patients on AC therapy decreased over time: 87.6 % at 3 months, 73.0 % at 6 months, 54.2 % at 12 months and 42.0 % at 36 months. At 12-months follow-up, the incidences (95 % confidence interval [CI]) of all-cause mortality, recurrent VTE and major bleeding were 6.5 (7.0-8.1), 5.4 (4.9-5.9) and 2.7 (2.4-3.0) per 100 person-years, respectively. At 36-months, these decreased to 4.4 (4.2-4.7), 3.5 (3.2-2.7) and 1.4 (1.3-1.6) per 100 person-years, respectively. Over 36-months, the rate of all-cause mortality and major bleeds were highest in patients treated with parenteral therapy (PAR) versus oral anti-coagulants (OAC) and no OAC, and the rate of recurrent VTE was highest in patients on no OAC versus those on PAR and OAC. The most frequent cause of death after 36-month follow-up was cancer (n = 565, 48.6 %), followed by cardiac (n = 94, 8.1 %), and VTE (n = 38, 3.2 %). Most recurrent VTE events were DVT alone (n = 564, 63.3 %), with the remainder PE, (n = 236, 27.3 %), or PE in combination with DVT (n = 63, 7.3 %). INTERPRETATION: GARFIELD-VTE provides a global perspective of anticoagulation patterns and highlights the accumulation of events within the first 12 months after diagnosis. 12. Seizure control through genetic and pharmacological manipulation of Pumilio in Drosophila: a key component of neuronal homeostasis

Abstract: Epilepsy is a significant disorder for which approximately one-third of patients do not respond to drug treatments. Next-generation drugs, which interact with novel targets, are required to provide a better clinical outcome for these individuals. To identify potential novel targets for antiepileptic drug (AED) design, we used RNA sequencing to identify changes in gene transcription in two seizure models of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The first model compared gene transcription between wild type (WT) and bangsenseless1 (parabss), a gain-of-function mutant in the sole fly voltage-gated sodium channel (paralytic). The second model compared WT with WT fed the proconvulsant picrotoxin (PTX). We identified 743 genes (FDR≤1%) with significant altered expression levels that are common to both seizure models. Of these, 339 are consistently upregulated and 397 downregulated. We identify pumilio (pum) to be downregulated in both seizure models. Pum is a known homeostatic regulator of action potential firing in both flies and mammals, achieving control of neuronal firing through binding to, and regulating translation of, the mRNA transcripts of voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav). We show that maintaining expression of pum in the CNS of parabss flies is potently anticonvulsive, whereas its reduction through RNAi-mediated knockdown is proconvulsive. Using a cell-based luciferase reporter screen, we screened a repurposed chemical library and identified 12 compounds sufficient to increase activity of pum. Of these compounds, we focus on avobenzone, which significantly rescues seizure behaviour in parabss flies. The mode of action of avobenzone includes potentiation of pum expression and mirrors the ability of this homeostatic regulator to reduce the persistent voltage-gated Na+ current (INaP) in an identified neuron. This study reports a novel approach to suppress seizure and highlights the mechanisms of neuronal homeostasis as potential targets for next-generation AEDs.

13. Intact reinforcement learning in healthy ageing

Abstract: What does age in ageing? Results in reinforcement learning (RL) are mixed. Some studies found deteriorated performance in older participants compared to younger controls whereas other studies did not. Daniel et al. (2020) suggested that task demand can explain these differences, with less demanding tasks showing no effect of age. Here, we increased the task demand of previous studies turning them into a classic navigation task. We extracted 4 behavioral parameters and 2 parameters (learning and exploration rates) of a classic Q-learning model. Except for one specific parameter, all other parameters showed no group differences, i.e., RL turned out to be intact in older individuals also with higher task demands. It is important to publish such null results to avoid the stigmatizing impression of an overall performance deficit among older people.

17. The curse of optimism: a persistent distraction by novelty

Abstract: Human curiosity has been interpreted as a drive for exploration and modeled by intrinsically motivated reinforcement learning algorithms. An unresolved challenge in machine learning is that these algorithms are prone to distraction by reward-independent stochastic stimuli. We ask whether humans exhibit the same distraction pattern in their behavior as the algorithms. To answer this question, we design a multi-step decision-making paradigm containing an unknown number of states in a stochastic part of the environment, combined with a reward-manipulation that varies optimism of participants regarding the availability of rewards. We show that (i) participants exhibit a persistent distraction by novelty in the stochastic part; (ii) reward optimism increases this distraction; and (iii) the persistent distraction is consistent with the predictions of algorithms driven by novelty but not with ‘optimal’ algorithms driven by information-gain. Our results suggest that humans use sup-optimal but computationally cheap curiosity-driven policies for exploration in complex environments.

Abstract: Significance Natural systems (e.g., cells and ecosystems) generally consist of reaction networks (e.g., metabolic networks or food webs) with nonlinear flux functions (e.g., Michaelis–Menten kinetics and density-dependent selection). Despite their complex nonlinearities, these systems often exhibit simple exponential growth in the long term. How exponential growth emerges from nonlinear networks remains elusive. Our work demonstrates mathematically how two principles, multivariate scalability of flux functions and ergodicity of the rescaled system, guarantee a well-defined growth rate. By connecting ergodic theory, a powerful branch of mathematics, to the study of growth in biology, our theoretical framework can recapitulate various growth modalities (from balanced growth to periodic, quasi-periodic, or even chaotic behaviors), greatly expanding the types of growing systems that can be studied., Exponentially growing systems are prevalent in nature, spanning all scales from biochemical reaction networks in single cells to food webs of ecosystems. How exponential growth emerges in nonlinear systems is mathematically unclear. Here, we describe a general theoretical framework that reveals underlying principles of long-term growth: scalability of flux functions and ergodicity of the rescaled systems. Our theory shows that nonlinear fluxes can generate not only balanced growth but also oscillatory or chaotic growth modalities, explaining nonequilibrium dynamics observed in cell cycles and ecosystems. Our mathematical framework is broadly useful in predicting long-term growth rates from natural and synthetic networks, analyzing the effects of system noise and perturbations, validating empirical and phenomenological laws on growth rate, and studying autocatalysis and network evolution.

Abstract: It has been reported that bipyramidal anatase TiO2 with {101}-exposed facets (AT170) results in outstanding photocatalytic performance. However, its activity decayed significantly and comparatively lower than that of commercial P25 after 20 min. Further studies and calculations showed that the methylene blue (MB) degradation rate constants for AT170 were time dependent and decrease of k values with time. Besides, the results of XPS, EA and TEM could clearly elucidate that the active sites of catalysts were blocked by the carbon buildup and covered on the surface creating the metal–carbon bonding on the catalysts. These observation strongly implied the existence of the poisoning effect of AT170 during photocatalytic processes. Also, the surface area values of P25 and AT170 were found to be 46.83 and 3.56 m2/g respectively. It was suggested that the catalyst poisoning effect could be prevented or controlled by increasing the surface area of the catalyst. Besides of surface area, zeta potential was also found to be served as the important factor determining the photocatalytic performance toward organic dyes due to the attraction/repulsion of electrostatic interaction. The zeta potential values of P25 and AT170 were found to be − 3.8 and − 32.9 mV respectively, which can adsorb cationic MB dyes on the negative charged surface through attraction of electrostatic interaction successively enhancing the degradation performance. It strongly indicates that both surface area and zeta potential play vital roles in photocatalytic degradation toward organic dyes and affect the rate constants.

Abstract: Manipulating neuronal homeostasis, which enables neurons to regulate their intrinsic excitability, offers an attractive opportunity to prevent seizures. However, no anticonvulsant compounds have yet been reported that directly manipulate neuronal homeostasis. Here, we describe a novel class of anticonvulsant compounds, based on 4-tert-butyl-benzaldehyde (4-TBB), with a mode-of-action that includes increased expression of the homeostatic regulator Pumilio (Pum). In Drosophila and mouse we use a pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced seizure model, and an electrically induced seizure model for refractory seizures to evaluate anticonvulsant efficacy. The pyrazole analogue (RAB216) demonstrates best efficacy, protecting 50% of mice from PTZ-induced seizure. Knock-down of Pum, in Drosophila, blocks anticonvulsive effects, whilst analysis of validated Pum targets show significant reductions following exposure of mouse brain to 4-TBB. This study provides proof-of-principle that anticonvulsant effects can be achieved through regulation of neuronal homeostasis and identifies a chemical lead compound for future development.

27. Distal spike initiation zone location estimation by morphological simulation of ionic current filtering demonstrated in a novel model of an identified Drosophila motoneuron.

Abstract: Studying ion channel currents generated distally from the recording site is difficult because of artifacts caused by poor space clamp and membrane filtering. A computational model can quantify artifact parameters for correction by simulating the currents only if their exact anatomical location is known. We propose that the same artifacts that confound current recordings can help pinpoint the source of those currents by providing a signature of the neuron's morphology. This method can improve the recording quality of currents initiated at the spike initiation zone (SIZ) that are often distal to the soma in invertebrate neurons. Drosophila being a valuable tool for characterizing ion currents, we estimated the SIZ location and quantified artifacts in an identified motoneuron, aCC/MN1-Ib, by constructing a novel multicompartmental model. Initial simulation of the measured biophysical channel properties in an isopotential Hodgkin-Huxley type neuron model partially replicated firing characteristics. Adding a second distal compartment, which contained spike-generating Na+ and K+ currents, was sufficient to simulate aCC's in vivo activity signature. Matching this signature using a reconstructed morphology predicted that the SIZ is on aCC's primary axon, 70 μm after the most distal dendritic branching point. From SIZ to soma, we observed and quantified selective morphological filtering of fast activating currents. Non-inactivating K+ currents are filtered ∼3 times less and despite their large magnitude at the soma they could be as distal as Na+ currents. The peak of transient component (NaT) of the voltage-activated Na+ current is also filtered more than the magnitude of slower persistent component (NaP), which can contribute to seizures. The corrected NaP/NaT ratio explains the previously observed discrepancy when the same channel is expressed in different cells. In summary, we used an in vivo signature to estimate ion channel location and recording artifacts, which can be applied to other neurons.

Abstract: Interfacial quantum states are drawing tremendous attention recently because of their importance in design of low-dimensional quantum heterostructures with desired charge, spin, or topological properties. Although most studies of the interfacial exchange interactions were mainly performed across the interface vertically, the lateral transport nowadays is still a major experimental method to probe these interactions indirectly. In this Letter, we fabricated a graphene and hydrogen passivated silicon interface to study the interfacial exchange processes. For the first time we found and confirmed a novel interfacial quantum state, which is specific to the 2D-3D interface. The vertically propagating electrons from silicon to graphene result in electron oscillation states at the 2D-3D interface. A harmonic oscillator model is used to explain this interfacial state. In addition, the interaction between this interfacial state (discrete energy spectrum) and the lateral band structure of graphene (continuous energy spectrum) results in Fano-Feshbach resonance. Our results show that the conventional description of the interfacial interaction in low-dimensional systems is valid only in considering the lateral band structure and its density-of-states and is incomplete for the ease of vertical transport. Our experimental observation and theoretical explanation provide more insightful understanding of various interfacial effects in low-dimensional materials, such as proximity effect, quantum tunneling, etc. More important, the Fano-Feshbach resonance may be used to realize all solid-state and scalable quantum interferometers.

Abstract: Obesity-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is more prevalent in males than in females, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The influence of hepatic androgen receptor (AR) pathway on the gender difference of HCC has been well documented. Here we investigated the role of hepatic lipogenesis, which is elevated in the livers of obese and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients, in stimulating the AR pathway for the male preference of obesity induced HCC. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a fructose-rich high carbohydrate diet (HCD) to induce hepatic lipogenesis. The effect of hepatic lipogenesis on AR was examined by the expression of hydrodynamically injected AR reporter and the endogenous AR target gene; the mechanism was delineated in hepatoma cell lines and validated in male mice. The hepatic lipogenesis induced by a fructose-rich HCD enhanced the transcriptional activity of hepatic AR in male mice, which did not happen when fed a high fat diet. This AR activation was blocked by sh-RNAs or inhibitors targeting key enzymes in lipogenesis, either acetyl-CoA carboxylase subunit alpha (ACCα), or fatty acid synthase (FASN), in vivo and in vitro. Further mechanistic study identified that specific unsaturated fatty acid, the oleic acid (C18:1 n-9), incorporated DAGs produced by hepatic lipogenesis are the key molecules to enhance the AR activity, through activation of Akt kinase, and this novel mechanism is targeted by metformin. Our study elucidates a novel mechanism underlying the higher risk of HCC in obese/NAFLD males, through specific DAGs enriched by hepatic lipogenesis to increase the transcriptional activity of hepatic AR, a confirmed risk factor for male HCC.

Abstract: Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) in the 2H-phase are promising semiconductors for opto-valleytronic and opto-spintronic applications because of their strong spin-valley coupling. Here, we report detailed studies of opto-valleytronic properties of heterogeneous domains in CVD-grown monolayer WS2 single crystals. By illuminating WS2 with off-resonance circularly polarized light and measuring the resulting spatially resolved circularly polarized emission (Pcirc), we find significantly large circular polarization (Pcirc up to 60% and 45% for α- and β-domains, respectively) already at 300 K, which increases to nearly 90% in the α-domains at 80 K. Studies of spatially resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Kelvin-probe force microscopy, and conductive atomic force microscopy reveal direct correlation among the PL intensity, defect densities, and chemical potential, with the α-domains showing lower defect densities and a smaller work function by 0.13 eV than the β-domains. This work function difference indicates the occurrence of type-two band alignments between the α- and β-domains. We adapt a classical model to explain how electronically active defects may serve as nonradiative recombination centers and find good agreement between experiments and the model. Scanning tunneling microscopic/spectroscopic (STM/STS) studies provide further evidence for tungsten vacancies (WVs) being the primary defects responsible for the suppressed PL and circular polarization in WS2. These results therefore suggest a pathway to control the opto-valleytronic properties of TMDCs by means of defect engineering.

Abstract: Digital, Background Guidelines recommend nonstatin lipid-lowering agents in patients at very high risk for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) if low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) remains ≥70 mg/dL on maximum tolerated statin treatment. It is uncertain if this approach benefits patients with LDL-C near 70 mg/dL. Lipoprotein(a) levels may influence residual risk. Objectives In a post hoc analysis of the ODYSSEY Outcomes (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab) trial, the authors evaluated the benefit of adding the proprotein subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor alirocumab to optimized statin treatment in patients with LDL-C levels near 70 mg/dL. Effects were evaluated according to concurrent lipoprotein(a) levels. Methods ODYSSEY Outcomes compared alirocumab with placebo in 18,924 patients with recent acute coronary syndromes receiving optimized statin treatment. In 4,351 patients (23.0%), screening or randomization LDL-C was 13.7 mg/dL or ≤13.7 mg/dL; corresponding adjusted treatment hazard ratios were 0.82 (95% CI: 0.72-0.92) and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.75-1.06), with Pinteraction = 0.43. Conclusions In patients with recent acute coronary syndromes and LDL-C near 70 mg/dL on optimized statin therapy, proprotein subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibition provides incremental clinical benefit only when lipoprotein(a) concentration is at least mildly elevated. Abstract: Organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures-based dual light-detecting/gas-sensing devices were fabricated. In this research, polycrystalline perylene diimide (PDI) membrane was coated on ZnO nanorods (NRs), functioning as sensing nanocomposites. Multiple material analyses including scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) indicate that organic perylene diimide was successfully deposited on ZnO NRs, forming organic/inorganic membrane on the sensing device. To examine the influence of organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructure on photo-sensing and gas-sensing behaviors, UV light detection and CO gas sensing impulse response were measured. Results reveal that organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructure can effectively enhance UV light and CO gas dual-sensing properties with addition of PDI. The coating of organic PDI on the ZnO NRs not only improves the gas interaction capability and gas-sensing stability but also enhances the UV absorption efficiency. Owing to advantages of low cost, simple fabrication, compact size, and device stability, hybrid PDI/ZnO organic/inorganic light/gas dual-sensing devices are promising for future portable hazardous light and gas sensing applications.

Abstract: A novel microwave annealing system and a specific processing condition are proposed for the pre-oxidation of carbon fiber. The microwave annealing system consists of a TM-mode resonant cavity and a silicon carbide (SiC) susceptor. The TM-mode cavity enhances the electric field at the center. The SiC susceptor absorbs part of the microwave energy and converts it to heat. The enhanced fields and the SiC susceptor provide both nonthermal and thermal treatments for fibrous materials with various dielectric properties. Furthermore, a two-step microwave annealing process is used to oxidize polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results support the theory that the microwave annealing can achieve a high aromatic index of 66.39% in just 13 min, 9 times faster than the traditional processing time. The results of the Raman spectra also illustrate that the sheath-core factor of the microwave-heated specimen is closer to one than that of the conventional furnace-heated type, which agree with the images of the cross-section area.

36. (Digital Presentation) Mn-VOH Micro Flakes Interconnected with CNT As Cathodes for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract: With increasing energy consumption and environmental awareness, the demand for next-generation energy storage systems has grown. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have received considerable attention among various types of energy storage devices due to their high safety standards and low cost. Herein, we present a sustainable synthesis approach for synthesizing MnVOH@CNT composite material and its application as the cathode material for aqueous Zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) by using a low-temperature (120 °C) hydrothermal process. Moreover, with a continuous network structure and expanded interlayer spacing, such a configuration can provide rapid electron transfer kinetics (DZn 2+: 10 ̶ 11−10−12 cm2 s−1) while ensuring close interaction between MnVOH and CNT during cycling. The materials have excellent electrochemical properties as cathodes in the AZIBs. The resultant batteries exhibit a high intercalation storage capacity of c.a. 380 mAh g−1 at acurrent density of 0.1 A g−1, minimized polarization, and excellent capacity retention of c.a. 90% after 300 cycles. Furthermore, operando synchrotron X-ray absorption, near-edge spectroscopy was used for the first time to confirm the Zn2+ charge-storage mechanism. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction, studies were also done to better understand the structural changes of the MnVOH@CNT nanocomposite during the discharge/charge processes. Abstract: We report a reduction in the linewidth and suppression of spectral diffusion of quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride supported on a conductive substrate. We observe a temperature-dependent reduction in the spectral emission linewidth for CVD-grown and exfoliated crystals on conductive ITO relative to those seen on silicon dioxide (${\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$) substrates. We show that the inhomogeneous linewidth can be suppressed by 45% as a result of using a conductive substrate. We investigate the zero-phonon line profile at temperatures ranging from 4 to 300 K and decompose the effects of thermal broadening and spectral diffusion at each temperature by Voigt fitting. The temperature dependence of homogeneous and inhomogeneous components of the broadening is discussed.

Abstract: Research on schizophrenia typically focuses on one paradigm, for which clear-cut abnormalities between patients and controls are established. Great care is taken to understand the underlying genetical, neurophysiological, and cognitive mechanisms, which eventually may explain the clinical outcome. This approach has led to many important hypotheses about the causes of schizophrenia. One tacit assumption of these deep rooting approaches is that paradigms tap into common and representative characteristics of the disease. Here, we analyzed resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) of 121 schizophrenia patients and 75 age-matched controls, from which we extracted 194 features. Sixty-nine of these features showed significant group differences with medium to large effect sizes, indicating important abnormalities. To understand to what extent these features tap into the same aspects of the disorder, we computed both Pearson and partial least squares correlations. Surprisingly, correlations were very low, except for very similar features, where correlations were high, suggesting that most features are sensitive to different abnormalities. Using partial least squares regression, we show that combining the 69 features increases predictability of clinical outcomes by more than a factor of 5. We propose that complementing deep with shallow rooting approaches, where many roughly independent features are extracted from one paradigm (or several paradigms), will strongly improve diagnosis and potential treatment of schizophrenia.

Abstract: Exponentially growing systems are prevalent in nature, spanning all scales from biochemical reaction networks in single cells to food webs of ecosystems. How exponential growth emerges in nonlinear systems is mathematically unclear. Here, we describe a general theoretical framework that reveals underlying principles of long-term growth: scalability of flux functions and ergodicity of the rescaled systems. Our theory shows that nonlinear fluxes can generate not only balanced growth, but also oscillatory or chaotic growth modalities, explaining non-equilibrium dynamics observed in cell cycles and ecosystems. Our mathematical framework is broadly useful in predicting long-term growth rates from natural and synthetic networks, analyzing the effects of system noise and perturbations, validating empirical and phenomenological laws on growth rate, and studying autocatalysis and network evolution.SignificanceNatural systems (e.g., cells, ecosystems) generally consist of reaction networks (e.g., metabolic networks, food webs) with nonlinear flux functions (e.g., Michaelis-Menten kinetics, density-dependent selection). Despite their complex nonlinearities, these systems often exhibit simple exponential growth in the long term. How exponential growth emerges from nonlinear networks remains elusive. Our work demonstrates mathematically how two principles, multivariate scalability of flux functions and ergodicity of the rescaled system, guarantee a well-defined rate of growth. By connecting ergodic theory, a powerful branch of mathematics, to the study of growth in biology, our theoretical framework can recapitulate various growth modalities (from balanced growth to periodic, quasi-periodic or even chaotic behaviors), greatly expanding the types of growing systems that can be studied.

Abstract: Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) persistently infected about 250 million people worldwide, and a curative treatment remains an unmet medical need. Among many approaches to treat chronic hepatitis B (CHB), therapeutic vaccines have been developed for two decades, but none have yielded promising results in clinical trials. Therefore, dissection of HBV clearance mechanisms during therapeutic vaccination in appropriate models, which could give rise to new curative therapies, is urgently needed. Growing evidence indicates that prolonged and intensive exposure of antigen-specific T cells to viral antigens is a major cause of T cell exhaustion, and decreases anti-HBV immunity efficacy of therapeutic vaccination. HBV X protein (HBx) is expressed at low levels, and the understanding of its immunogenicity and potential in therapeutic CHB vaccines is limited. Methods HBV genome sequences from CHB patients were cloned into a pAAV plasmid backbone and transfected into immunocompetent mouse hepatocytes through hydrodynamic injection. Mice carrying > 500 IU/mL serum HBV surface antigen (HBs) for more than 4 weeks were considered HBV carriers mimicking human CHB and received 3 doses of weekly HBx vaccine by subcutaneous immunization. Serum HBV clearance was evaluated by monitoring serum HBs and HBV-DNA titers. Residual HBV in the liver was evaluated by western blotting for HBV core antigen. The splenic antigen-specific T cell response was quantified by a 15-mer overlapping peptide-stimulated interferon-γ enzyme-linked immunospot assay. Blood and hepatic immune cells were quantified by flow cytometric analysis. Results Our HBx-based vaccine induced systemic HBx-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses in HBV carrier mice and demonstrated significant HBs and HBV-DNA elimination. The protective effect persisted for at least 30 days without additional booster immunization. Different infiltrating myeloid cell subsets, each with distinctive roles during immune-mediated HBV clearance, were found in the liver of vaccinated mice. During vaccine therapy, inflammatory monocyte depletion resulted in sustained HBV clearance inhibition, whereas phagocytic monocyte-derived macrophage and Kupffer cell elimination resulted in only transient inhibition of vaccine-induced HBV clearance. Conclusions We report the potential role of HBx as a major immunogen in an HBV therapeutic vaccine and the significance of a liver-infiltrating monocyte subset during hepatic viral clearance.

Abstract: In cells, organs and whole organisms, nutrient sensing is key to maintaining homeostasis and adapting to a fluctuating environment1. In many animals, nutrient sensors are found within the enteroendocrine cells of the digestive system; however, less is known about nutrient sensing in their cellular siblings, the absorptive enterocytes1. Here we use a genetic screen in Drosophila melanogaster to identify Hodor, an ionotropic receptor in enterocytes that sustains larval development, particularly in nutrient-scarce conditions. Experiments in Xenopus oocytes and flies indicate that Hodor is a pH-sensitive, zinc-gated chloride channel that mediates a previously unrecognized dietary preference for zinc. Hodor controls systemic growth from a subset of enterocytes—interstitial cells—by promoting food intake and insulin/IGF signalling. Although Hodor sustains gut luminal acidity and restrains microbial loads, its effect on systemic growth results from the modulation of Tor signalling and lysosomal homeostasis within interstitial cells. Hodor-like genes are insect-specific, and may represent targets for the control of disease vectors. Indeed, CRISPR–Cas9 genome editing revealed that the single hodor orthologue in Anopheles gambiae is an essential gene. Our findings highlight the need to consider the instructive contributions of metals—and, more generally, micronutrients—to energy homeostasis.

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the association of preexisting hypertension at admission with the mortality in patients with systolic heart failure (HF). Method: We prospectively investigated the association of preexisting hypertension with the mortality among 1351 patients with HF in Taiwan during an average 12 months (range: 8 months–18 months) follow-up period. A multivariate cox regression analysis for the overall cohort and a subgroup analysis by age were performed. Results: After adjustment for all potential risk factors, the associations of preexisting hypertension with cardiovascular mortality were significantly reduced in the overall cohort and those aged less than 65 years (hazard ratios (HR): 0.53, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.33–0.84, and 0.28, 95% CI: 0.11–0.67, respectively). However, the associations with all-cause mortality were not significantly different in these two groups (HR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.54–1.09, and 0.59, 95% CI: 0.32–1.07, respectively). Furthermore, the associations were all nonsignificant in the patients aged older than 65 years. Conclusion: Preexisting hypertension have an inverse association with cardiovascular mortality in the Asian patients with systolic HF, particularly for those with younger ages. Abstract: Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have intrinsic valley degrees of freedom, making them appealing for exploiting valleytronic applications in information storage and processing. WS2 monolayer possesses two inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone, each valley coupling selectively with a circular polarization of light. The degree of valley polarization (DVP) under the excitation of circularly polarized light (CPL) is a parameter that determines the purity of valley polarized photoluminescence (PL) of monolayer WS2 . Here, we report efficient tailoring of valley-polarized PL from monolayer WS2 at room temperature (RT) through surface plasmon-exciton interactions with plasmonic Archimedes spiral (PAS) nanostructures. The DVP of WS2 at RT can be enhanced from < 5% to 40% and 50% by using 2 turns (2T) and 4 turns (4T) of PAS, respectively. Further enhancement and control of excitonic valley polarization is demonstrated by electrostatically doping monolayer WS2 . For CPL on WS2 -2TPAS heterostructures, the 40% valley polarization is enhanced to 70% by modulating the carrier doping via a backgate, which may be attributed to the screening of momentum-dependent long-range electron-hole exchange interactions. The manifestation of electrical tunibility in the valley-polarized emission from WS2 -PAS heterostructures presents a new strategy towards harnessing valley excitons for application in ultrathin valleytronic devices. Abstract: Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) techniques have been shown to be an efficient method to achieve single-step synthesis of high-quality monolayer graphene (MLG) without the need of active heating. Here we report PECVD-growth of single-crystalline hexagonal bilayer graphene (BLG) flakes and mm-size BLG films with the interlayer twist angle controlled by the growth parameters. The twist angle has been determined by three experimental approaches, including direct measurement of the relative orientation of crystalline edges between two stacked monolayers by scanning electron microscopy, analysis of the twist angle-dependent Raman spectral characteristics, and measurement of the Moir�� period with scanning tunneling microscopy. In mm-sized twisted BLG (tBLG) films, the average twist angle can be controlled from 0 to approximately 20 \degree, and the angular spread for a given growth condition can be limited to < 7 \degree. Different work functions between MLG and BLG have been verified by the Kelvin probe force microscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrical measurements of back-gated field-effect-transistor devices based on small-angle tBLG samples revealed high-quality electric characteristics at 300 K and insulating temperature dependence down to 100 K. Abstract: Many decisions rely on how we evaluate potential outcomes associated with the options under consideration and estimate their corresponding probabilities of occurrence. Outcome valuation is subjective as it requires consulting internal preferences and is sensitive to context. In contrast, probability estimation requires extracting statistics from the environment and therefore imposes unique challenges to the decision maker. Here we show that probability estimation, like outcome valuation, is subject to context effects that bias probability estimates away from other stimuli present in the same context. However, unlike valuation, these context effects appeared to be scaled by estimated uncertainty, which is largest at intermediate probabilities. BOLD imaging showed that patterns of multivoxel activity in dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) predicted individual differences in context effects on probability estimate. These results establish VMPFC as the neurocomputational substrate shared between valuation and probability estimation and highlight the additional involvement of dACC that can be uniquely attributed to probability estimation. Abstract: Background Parenteral anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) have constituted the cornerstone of venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment. Meanwhile, direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) provide physicians with an alternative. The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD (GARFIELD)-VTE observes real-world treatment practices. Objectives Describe initial anticoagulation (AC) treatment patterns in VTE patients who received parenteral AC, VKAs, and/or DOACs within ±30 days of diagnosis. Methods VTE patients were categorized into parenteral AC only, parenteral AC with transition to VKA, VKA only, parenteral AC with transition to DOAC, and DOAC only. Results A total of 9647 patients were initiated on AC treatment alone. 4781 (49.6%) patients received DOACs ± parenteral ACs; 3187 (33.0%), VKA ± parenteral ACs; and 1679 (17.4%) parenteral ACs alone. Rivaroxaban was the most frequently used DOAC (79.4%). DOACs were more frequently used in North America/Australia (58.1%), Europe (52.2%), and Asia (47.6%) than in Latin America (29.7%) and the Middle East/South Africa (32.5%). In patients with suspected VTE, most received parenteral AC monotherapy (67.7%). Patients with deep vein thrombosis were more likely to receive DOACs alone than those with pulmonary embolism with or without deep vein thrombosis (36.2% vs 25.9%). Active cancer patients received parenteral AC alone (58.9%), with 25.5% receiving DOAC ± parenteral AC and 12.8% parenteral AC and VKA. A total of 46.5% of pregnant patients received parenteral AC monotherapy, 34.0% were treated with VKA ± parenteral AC, and 19.5% received a DOAC (± parenteral AC). Conclusion AC treatment patterns vary by patient population, geographic region and site of VTE. Guidelines for AC therapy are not always adhered to.
