Abstract The gut microbiome has been implicated in various human diseases, though findings across studies have shown considerable variability. In this study, we reanalyzed 6314 publicly available fecal metagenomes from 36 case-control studies on different diseases to investigate microbial diversity and disease-shared signatures. Using a unified analysis pipeline, we observed reduced microbial diversity in many diseases, while some exhibited increased diversity. Significant alterations in microbial communities were detected across most diseases. A meta-analysis identified 277 disease-associated gut species, including numerous opportunistic pathogens enriched in patients and a depletion of beneficial microbes. A random forest classifier based on these signatures achieved high accuracy in distinguishing diseased individuals from controls (AUC = 0.776) and high-risk patients from controls (AUC = 0.825), and it also performed well in external cohorts. These results offer insights into the gut microbiome’s role in common diseases in the Chinese population and will guide personalized disease management strategies.

Abstract Background/purpose(s) The gut microbiota and its metabolites play crucial roles in pathogenesis of arthritis, highlighting gut microbiota as a promising avenue for modulating autoimmunity. However, the characterization of the gut virome in arthritis patients, including osteoarthritis (OA) and gouty arthritis (GA), requires further investigation. Methods We employed virus-like particle (VLP)-based metagenomic sequencing to analyze gut viral community in 20 OA patients, 26 GA patients, and 31 healthy controls, encompassing a total of 77 fecal samples. Results Our analysis generated 6819 vOTUs, with a considerable proportion of viral genomes differing from existing catalogs. The gut virome in OA and GA patients differed significantly from healthy controls, showing variations in diversity and viral family abundances. We identified 157 OA-associated and 94 GA-associated vOTUs, achieving high accuracy in patient-control discrimination with random forest models. OA-associated viruses were predicted to infect pro-inflammatory bacteria or bacteria associated with immunoglobulin A production, while GA-associated viruses were linked to Bacteroidaceae or Lachnospiraceae phages. Furthermore, several viral functional orthologs displayed significant differences in frequency between OA-enriched and GA-enriched vOTUs, suggesting potential functional roles of these viruses. Additionally, we trained classification models based on gut viral signatures to effectively discriminate OA or GA patients from healthy controls, yielding AUC values up to 0.97, indicating the clinical utility of the gut virome in diagnosing OA or GA. Conclusion Our study highlights distinctive alterations in viral diversity and taxonomy within gut virome of OA and GA patients, offering insights into arthritis etiology and potential treatment and prevention strategies. Background and objectiveThe rupture risk of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) is related to their arterial origin, but whether the different segments of the artery have different risks and act as independent risk factors is still unknown. Our study aimed to investigate the rupture risk of IAs in different arterial segments in a large Chinese cohort.MethodsImaging and clinical data of consecutive patients with IAs diagnosed by Computed Tomography angiography (CTA) from January 2013 to December 2022 were collected. Two neuroradiologists independently identified ruptured and unruptured IAs based on imaging and medical records. The internal carotid artery (ICA), middle cerebral artery (MCA), anterior cerebral artery (ACA), vertebral artery (VA), and posterior cerebral artery (PCA) were segmented according to the Bouthillier and Fischer segmentation methods. Stenoses of the proximal parent vessel were evaluated and documented. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Beijing Tiantan Hospital approved this retrospective study.ResultsA total of 3,837 aneurysms {median size 3.5 mm [interquartile range (IQR) 2.6–5.1 mm]; 532 ruptured} were included in this study from 2,968 patients [mean age: 57 years (IQR 50–64); male patients: 1,153]. Ruptured aneurysms were most commonly located in the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) (52.9%), anterior communicating artery (ACoA) (33.8%), other locations (33.3%), ACA (22.4%), and basilar artery (BA) (21.4%). The locations with the highest likelihood of rupture were the C7 ICA (21.3%), M2 MCA (24.0%), distal MCA (25.0%), and A2 ACA (28.1%). IAs originating from the C7 (p < 0.001), dM1 (p = 0.022), and dA1 (p = 0.021) segments were independent risk factors for rupture. IAs without stenosis of the proximal parent vessel were associated with a higher risk of rupture (p = 0.023).ConclusionThere are unique associations between the origins of aneurysms from various arterial segments. Aneurysms originating from the anterior communicating artery (ACoA), BA, PICA, A2, dA, C7, and M2 indicate a higher risk of rupture. Aneurysms originating from C4, C5, and C6 indicate a lower risk of rupture. C7 IAs, ACoA IAs, and PICA IAs seem to be independent risk factors.

Objective: This study assesses the effectiveness and safety of single-port laparoscopic myomectomy (SPLM) versus conventional laparoscopic myomectomy (CLM). Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control study at a university tertiary hospital, involving 262 patients treated from July 2020 to December 2022. Participants were divided into two groups: 132 underwent SPLM and 130 underwent CLM. Results: The two groups were comparable in terms of age, body mass index, parity, delivery history, preoperative anemia, number of myomas, and size of the largest myoma. The SPLM group showed a significant reduction in operation time (average 93 min) and estimated blood loss (average 50 ml) compared to the CLM group (average 118.5 min and 100 ml, respectively). Subgroup analysis based on the size, location, and number of myomas further highlighted the advantages of SPLM, particularly for patients with large (diameter ≥8 cm) or multiple myomas (number ≥4). Patient satisfaction was also notably higher in the SPLM group. Conclusions: Single-port laparoscopic myomectomy offers a highly effective, safer, and patient-preferred option for the surgical management of fibroids, especially in cases of large or multiple myomas. These findings suggest that SPLM could become the preferred surgical approach for complex fibroid cases, promising less trauma and quicker recovery for patients.

During the 2023 Chinese New Year (CNY), many city governments temporarily relaxed firework restrictions, leading to increased sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from the combustion of sulfur-containing fireworks. This study employed the four-dimensional variational (4DVar) assimilation system to examine variations in SO2 emissions in China by assimilating hourly ground-based observations. Two experiments were conducted during CNY in 2022 and 2023 to quantify the variations in SO2 emissions. On CNY’s Eve in 2023, following the relaxation of the firework ban, SO2 emissions surged by 8.22 Gg nationwide compared to the previous day with significant increases in the Energy Golden Triangle (2.037 Gg), the North China Plain (1.709 Gg), and northeast China (0.945 Gg). Emissions peaked on CNY’s Eve and rapidly declined in the following two days but remained elevated compared to the pre-CNY period, indicating lingering effects of firework burning. Compared to the forecasts using the prior emissions, the optimized emissions markedly improved the model forecasts of SO2 during the 2023 CNY period, with an increase in the correlation coefficient (R) from 0.13 to 0.64 and a reduction in the root mean square error (RMSE) by 49.2%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the optimized emissions. These findings will be useful for local governments in formulating strategies for firework burning during CNY.

In this study, we utilised palm kernel cake as a substrate and fermented it with a composite of bacteria (Pediococcus pentosaceus CGMCC No. 27203 and Lactobacillus plantarum CGMCC No. 27202) and enzymes. We conducted a trial with twenty-four cattle, randomly divided into two groups of twelve cattle each. The control group (CON) was fed the standard farm diet, whereas the treatment group (PKC) received a diet with 3% of soyabean replaced by fermented palm kernel cake. The trial lasted for six weeks. The results showed no significant differences in growth performance between the PKC and CON groups. The abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Spirochaetes was significantly higher in the PKC group than in the CON group. At the genus level, the abundances of Anaeroplasma, norank_f__Bacteroidales_UCG-001, norank_f__Absconditabacteriales_SR1, norank_f__p-251-o5, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, Prevotellaceae_UCG-001, Prevotellaceae_UCG-004, and Treponema significantly increased in the PKC group. Lipid digestion and absorption pathways were significantly enriched in the PKC group. The results indicate that adding fermented palm kernel cake to the diet can increase the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Fibrobacteres in the rumen of beef cattle, enhancing the ability of the PKC group to degrade protein, carbohydrates, and fibrous materials in the feed, thereby improving the feed utilisation efficiency in beef cattle. Adding fermented palm kernel cake to the diet improved carbohydrate metabolism, metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, and nucleotide metabolism. Correlation analysis between the rumen microbiota and metabolic pathways showed that Prevotellaceae_UCG-001 and Prevotellaceae_UCG-003 were positively correlated with amino acid metabolism, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Succiniclasticum were positively correlated with metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, and Prevotella and Ruminococcus were positively correlated with nucleotide metabolism. These findings elucidate the differences in rumen microbiota when fermented palm kernel cake is added to the diet, providing a theoretical basis for the application of fermented palm kernel cake in the diet of beef cattle.

Background: Wall shear stress (WSS) has been proved to be related to the formation, development and rupture of intracranial aneurysms. Aneurysm wall enhancement (AWE) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be caused by inflammation and have confirmed its relationship with low WSS. High WSS can also result in inflammation but the research of its correlation with AWE is lack because of the focus on large aneurysms limited by 3T MRI in most previous studies.This study aimed to assess the potential association between high or low WSS and AWE in different aneuryms. Especially the relationship between high WSS and AWE in small aneurysm. Methods: Forty-three unruptured intracranial aneurysms in 42 patients were prospectively included for analysis. 7.0 T MRI was used for imaging. Aneurysm size was measured on three-dimensional time-of-flight (TOF) images. Aneurysm-to-pituitary stalk contrast ratio (CRstalk) was calculated on post-contrast black-blood T1-weighted fast spin echo sequence images. Hemodynamics were assessed by four-dimensional flow MRI. Results: The small aneurysms group had more positive WSS–CRstalk correlation coefficient distribution (dome: 78.6 %, p = 0.009; body: 50.0 %, p = 0.025), and large group had more negative coefficient distribution (dome: 44.8 %, p = 0.001; body: 69.0 %, p = 0.002). Improving the forecasting skills of the meso-scale convective system (MCS) is one of the key scientific problems in the field of numerical weather prediction. The occurrence and development of severe convective weather are affected by multiple factors such as atmospheric thermodynamic and kinetic conditions, topography, and air pollution conditions. Due largely to the uncertainty in models and the inevitable errors of initial values, large uncertainties still exist for the accurate prediction of severe weather produced by the MCS. Therefore, to effectively improve the accuracy of severe convective weather forecasts in China, conducting targeted observation experiments in key areas of interest, which typically helps to reduce the uncertainty level of the model's initial meteorological field, may be one of the effective ways forward. It follows that the initiation and formation mechanisms of MCS can be revealed, and the forecast skills of severe convection will be improved. In this paper, we first propose the technology roadmap of targeted observation as follows. Based on the modern meteorological observational network over the Jing-Jin-Ji area, the typical MCS forecast sensitive regions are identified by using the Ensemble Transform Kalman filter, combined with the atmospheric sounding systems mounted on the mobile vehicle, where targeted observation experiments will be conducted. As such, convective initiation mechanisms are elucidated, and the novel methods expected to improve the forecast skill for MCS are explored. Secondly, in response to the challenge of "finding needles in a haystack" in the vertical observation of the lower atmosphere for short-term forecasting and warning of severe convective weather in large cities, the potential application value of a dynamic triangular observation mesonet in the study of triggering and development mechanisms of severe convective weather was explored through the construction of a Pyramid-shaped LOwer Tropospheric Observational System (PLOTOS) that consists of five stations with simultaneous vertical observation capabilities. Finally, it is suggested that the initiation and formation mechanisms of severe convective weather be unraveled using PLOTOS, and the mesoscale targeted observation technology be developed, which is crucial to the improvement of weather observational networks in large cities and provide new ideas and methods for improving the forecast of severe convective weather processes.

The model precatalyst sp3- and sp2-N dinitrogen-coordinated zinc–heteroimidazole has been used as an efficient catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. Subsequent to our exceptional active 5,6,7-trihydroquinolin-8-amine-zinc catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone, various pyridine-fused cycloalkanones (ring size from five to eight) are developed for the correspondent fused amine–pyridine derivatives and their zinc–heteroimidazole chloride complexes Zn1–Zn8 (LZnCl2) bearing N-diphenylphosphinoethyl pendants. Activated with two equivalents of LiN(SiMe3)2, the title zinc complexes efficiently promote the ROP of L-lactide (L-LA) in situ; among them, Zn4/2Li(NSiMe3)2 catalyzed 500 equivalent L-LA at 80 °C with 92% conversion in 5 min (TOF: 5520 h−1). Under the same conditions, the catalytic efficiency for the ROP of rac-LA by Zn1–Zn8/2Li(NSiMe3)2 was slightly lower than that for L-LA (highest TOF: 4440 h−1). In both cases, cyclooctyl-fused pyridyl–zinc complexes exhibited higher activity than others, while the cycloheptyl-fused zinc complexes showed the lowest activity. The microstructure analysis of the polymers showed they possessed a linear structure capped with CH3O as major and cyclic structure as minor. In this work, all the ligands and zinc complexes were well characterized by 1H/13C/31P NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis.

From the perspective of prevention and treatment of dengue, it is important to minimize the number of infections within a limited time frame. That is, the study of finite time contraction stability (FTCS) of dengue system is a meaningful topic. This article proposes a dengue epidemic model with reaction-diffusion, impulse and Markov switching. By constructing an equivalent system, the well-posedness of the positive solution is proved. The main result is that sufficient conditions to guarantee the finite time contraction stability of the dengue model are acquired based on the average pulse interval method and the bounded pulse interval method. Furthermore, the numerical findings indicate the influences of impulse, control strategies and noise intensity on the FTCS.

Abstract Background Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a vital index for systemic inflammation and a prognostic indicator for gastric cancer (GC). Despite the abundant literature on NLR's prognostic value for GC, the underlying factors mediating its impact on survival remain unclear. The objective of this study was to analyze the role of NLR in different prognostic models and subgroups, and investigate the mediating effects of immune infiltrates between NLR and survival. Methods A total of 924 patients who underwent D2 lymph node resection were enrolled in this study. According to the level of NLR, patients were divided into two groups, the high and low NLR groups. Clinical parameters, indexes related to immune infiltrates, and survival were compared between the two groups. Prognostic models, interaction analysis, and mediating effects analysis were performed to investigate the clinical association of NLR, immune infiltrates, and survival. Results The infiltration of CD3+ and CD8+ T cells was significantly different in the two NLR groups. The level of NLR was an independent prognostic predictor of GC. Abstract Crohn's disease (CD) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that manifests mainly as chronic inflammation in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract, and its incidence has come to be increasing in recent years. Ferroptosis, a novel type of programmed cell death, it seems the role of ferroptosis-related biomarkers in CD has not been mentioned. Thus, the role of ferroptosis in CD and its relationship with immune infiltration were explored in this study. The CD dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The validated ferroptosis genes (FRGs) were retrieved from the public FerrDb database. The gene expression matrix of the CD dataset was analyzed with the “limma” package in R language to obtain differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between diseased and healthy samples. Then, intersecting genes between DEGs and FRGs were identified as differentially expressed ferroptosis-associated genes (DE-FRGs). Protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis and visualization were carried out with STRING and Cytoscape, and key CD ferroptosis-related genes (CD-FRGs) were identified along with their Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways using the clusterProfiler package. Immune cell infiltration was analyzed with CIBERSORT. The correlation between key CD-FRGs and immune-infiltrated cells in CD was studied by Spearman's correlation method. A total of 37 DE-FRGs and 6 key CD-FRGs (CAV1, CD44, HIF1A, IFNG, TIMP1 and TLR4) were identified. GO and KEGG functional analysis indicated these genes enrichment in programmed cell death and apoptotic process, HIF-1 signaling pathway and IBD. Infiltration matrix analysis of immune cells showed abundant T cells CD4 memory activated, M1 macrophages, M2 macrophages, Mast cells activated and Neutrophils in CD intestinal tissues. The 6 key CD-FRGs were correlated with immune-infiltrated cells in CD based on correlation analysis. Taken together, immune cells with abnormal infiltration can be implicated in CD due to ferroptosis. This study identified 6 key CD-FRGs that may be key biomarkers of ferroptosis in CD; they include CAV1, CD44, HIF1A, IFNG, TIMP1 and TLR4. These findings suggest that the immune response is critical in CD caused by ferroptosis through the interaction between key CD-FRGs and immune infiltrating cells.

Background: In recent years, most studies believe that high TSH level is positively correlated with the incidence of thyroid cancer, but it is still controversial. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between preoperative TSH level and thyroid malignant nodules using pathological diagnosis as the gold standard. To evaluate the role of serum TSH in predicting malignancy of thyroid nodules with uncertain cytology.As an important member of the hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid axis in the endocrine system, TSH plays a crucial role in regulating the growth, differentiation, and function of thyroid cells (Zhang et al., 2023) [1]. Therefore, it has always been considered closely related to TC. Currently, most studies have compared the TSH levels of TC patients and individuals with benign thyroid disease or healthy controls. These findings from various studies indicated that TC patients often demonstrate elevated TSH levels, even when their TSH falls within the normal range. However, it is important to highlight that the current evidence primarily relies on cross-sectional studies, which mainly describe a phenomenon without establishing causal relationships. The involvement of TSH in the early onset or late progression of TC remains unknown, the interaction between TSH and other factors and how it affects TC is not well understood (Gubbi et al., 2020) [2].Symptoms of thyroid cancer are usually insidious, and early thyroid cancer often has no obvious clinical symptoms. Therefore, early detection and early treatment are particularly important, and how to improve the preoperative diagnosis rate of thyroid nodules is also a problem that clinicians pay close attention to. Objective: To evaluate the value of serum TSH concentration in the diagnosis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma in patients with thyroid nodules. Methods: Our study searched databases in both Chinese and English.China Academic Journals FULL-text Database (CNKI), China Online Journals, Chinese Scientific Journals database and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) were searched by computer. The English literature was established by PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and other databases until June 2022 to search for relevant literatures on the diagnostic test of serum TSH concentration in patients with thyroid nodule. The literatures that met the criteria were screened, the data were extracted, and the literature quality was evaluated. The sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio of the method for the diagnosis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma were calculated and summarized. The receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was drawn and the area under the curve was obtained. Results: A total of 23 diagnostic tests were included (5348 lesions). Meta-analysis showed that the combined sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio of serum TSH concentration in the diagnosis of differentiated thyroid carcinoma were 0.64, 0.72, 2.511, 0.386 and 7.14, respectively. The area under SROC curve (AUC) was 0.79, and the Q index was 0.7283, indicating no statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Based on current evidence, detection of serum TSH concentration in thyroid nodule patients has high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of differentiated thyroid cancer, which has good clinical application value. However, other auxiliary examinations are still needed to improve the diagnosis rate.

ABSTRACT The gut microbiota is an important risk factor and therapeutic target in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD), a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, alterations in the gut viral community and its contribution to ACVD have rarely been investigated. In this study, we characterized and compared the gut viromes from the fecal metagenomes of 214 patients with ACVD and 171 healthy individuals using a reference-dependent virome approach. We revealed that ACVD patients exhibited a significant increase in viral richness at the family level and a visible alteration in overall virome structure regardless of host sex, age, or body mass index. At the viral operational taxonomic unit (vOTU) level, we identified 105 vOTUs that significantly increased in abundance in ACVD patients and 60 vOTUs that increased in abundance in healthy controls. A majority (43.8%) of the ACVD-enriched vOTUs were predicted to infect Streptococcaceae, Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae, and Streptococcaceae had tight correlations with the corresponding gut bacterial species, whereas a considerable proportion (35.0%) of the control-enriched vOTUs were Bacteroidaceae, Burkholderiaceae, and Lachnospiraceae phages. Functional analyses revealed five viral auxiliary metabolic genes that differed in frequency between ACVD-enriched and control-enriched vOTUs. Moreover, we identified gut viral signatures for ACVD discrimination and achieved an optimal area under the receiver operator characteristic curve of 0.878 for distinguishing patients from healthy controls. Our results provide a comprehensive view of the ACVD gut virome, which may contribute to the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for ACVD and additional relevant cardiovascular diseases. IMPORTANCE Existing studies have found that there is a close relationship between human virome and numerous diseases, and diseases may affect the diversity and composition of the virome; at the same time, changes in the virome will in turn affect the onset and progression of the disease. However, the composition and functional capabilities of the gut virome associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) have not been systematically investigated. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the gut virome in patients with ACVD. We characterized the structural changes in the gut virome of ACVD patients, which may facilitate additional mechanistic, diagnostic, and interventional studies of ACVD and related diseases.

Background and purpose: Anatomical labeling of the cerebral vasculature is a crucial topic in determining the morphological nature and characterizing the vital variations of vessels, yet precise labeling of the intracranial arteries is time-consuming and challenging, given anatomical structural variability and surging imaging data. We present a U-Net-based deep learning (DL) model to automatically label detailed anatomical segments in computed tomography angiography (CTA) for the first time. The trained DL algorithm was further tested on a clinically relevant set for the localization of intracranial aneurysms (IAs).Methods: 457 examinations with varying degrees of arterial stenosis were used to train, validate, and test the model, aiming to automatically label 42 segments of the intracranial arteries [e.g., 7 segments of the internal carotid artery (ICA)]. Evaluation metrics included Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), mean surface distance (MSD), and Hausdorff distance (HD). Additionally, 96 examinations containing at least one IA were enrolled to assess the model’s potential in enhancing clinicians’ precision in IA localization. A total of 5 clinicians with different experience levels participated as readers in the clinical experiment and identified the precise location of IA without and with algorithm assistance, where there was a washout period of 14 days between two interpretations. The diagnostic accuracy, time, and mean interrater agreement (Fleiss’ Kappa) were calculated to assess the differences in clinical performance of clinicians.Results: The proposed model exhibited notable labeling performance on 42 segments that included 7 anatomical segments of ICA, with the mean DSC of 0.88, MSD of 0.82 mm and HD of 6.59 mm. Furthermore, the model demonstrated superior labeling performance in healthy subjects compared to patients with stenosis (DSC: 0.91 vs. 0.89, p < 0.05; HD: 4.75 vs. 6.19, p < 0.05). Concurrently, clinicians with model predictions achieved significant improvements when interpreting the precise location of IA. The clinicians’ mean accuracy increased by 0.04 (p = 0.003), mean time to diagnosis reduced by 9.76 s (p < 0.001), and mean interrater agreement (Fleiss’ Kappa) increased by 0.07 (p = 0.029).Conclusion: Our model stands proficient for labeling intracranial arteries using the largest CTA dataset. Crucially, it demonstrates clinical utility, helping prioritize the patients with high risks and ease clinical workload.

Abstract Procedural myocardial injury (PMI), which is the most common complication of elective percutaneous coronary intervention (ePCI), is associated with future adverse cardiac events. In this randomized pilot trial, we assessed the effects of prolonged use of the anti-coagulant bivalirudin on PMI after ePCI. Patients undergoing ePCI were randomized into the following two groups: the bivalirudin use during operation group (BUDO, 0.75 mg/kg bolus plus 1.75 mg/kg/h) and the bivalirudin use during and after operation for 4 h (BUDAO, 0.75 mg/kg bolus plus 1.75 mg/kg/h). Blood samples were collected before and 24 h after ePCI (per 8 h). The primary outcome, PMI, was defined as an increase in post-ePCI cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels of > 1 × 99th% upper reference limit (URL) when the pre-PCI cTnI was normal or a rise in cTnI of > 20% of the baseline value when it was above the 99th percentile URL, but it was stable or falling. Major PMI (MPMI) was defined as a post-ePCI cTnI increase of > 5 × 99th% URL. A total of 330 patients were included (n = 165 per group). The incidences of PMI and MPMI were not significantly higher in the BUDO group than in the BUDAO group (PMI: 115 [69.70%] vs. 102 [61.82%], P = 0.164; MPMI: 81 [49.09%] vs. 70 [42.42%], P = 0.269). However, the absolute change in cTnI levels (calculated as the peak value 24 h post-PCI minus the pre-PCI value) was notably larger in the BUDO group (0.13 [0.03, 1.95]) than in the BUDAO group (0.07 [0.01, 0.61]) (P = 0.045). Moreover, the incidence of bleeding events was similar between the two groups (BUDO: 0 [0.00%]; BUDAO: 2 [1.21%], P = 0.498). Prolonged infusion of bivalirudin for 4 h after ePCI reduces PMI severity without increasing the risk of bleeding. ClinicalTrials.gov.Number: NCT04120961, 09/10/2019.

Abstract Although patients are undergoing similar lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) with statins, the outcomes of coronary plaque in diabetic mellitus (DM) and non-DM patients are different. Clinical data of 239 patients in this observational study with acute coronary syndrome was from our previous randomized trial were analyzed at 3 years, and 114 of them underwent OCT detection at baseline and the 1-year follow-up were re-anlayzed by a novel artificial intelligence imaging software for nonculprit subclinical atherosclerosis (nCSA). Normalized total atheroma volume changes (ΔTAVn) of nCSA were the primary endpoint. Plaque progression (PP) was defined as any increase in ΔTAVn. DM patients showed more PP in nCSA (ΔTAVn; 7.41 (− 2.82, 11.85) mm3 vs. − 1.12 (− 10.67, 9.15) mm3, p = 0.009) with similar reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from baseline to 1-year. The main reason is that the lipid component in nCSA increases in DM patients and non-significantly decreases in non-DM patients, which leads to a significantly higher lipid TAVn (24.26 (15.05, 40.12) mm3 vs. 16.03 (6.98, 26.54) mm3, p = 0.004) in the DM group than in the non-DM group at the 1-year follow-up. DM was an independent predictor of PP in multivariate logistic regression analysis (OR = 2.731, 95% CI 1.160–6.428, p = 0.021). Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) related to nCSA at 3 years were higher in the DM group than in the non-DM group (9.5% vs. 1.7%, p = 0.027). Despite a comparable reduction in LDL-C levels after LLT, more PP with an increase in the lipid component of nCSA and a higher incidence of MACEs at the 3-year follow-up was observed in DM patients. The integration of high-resolution aerosol measurements into an atmospheric chemistry model can improve air quality forecasting. However, traditional data assimilation methods are challenged in effectively incorporating such detailed aerosol information. This study utilized the WRF-Chem model to conduct data assimilation and prediction experiments using the Himawari-8 satellite’s aerosol optical depth (AOD) product and ground-level particulate matter concentration (PM) measurements during a record-breaking dust event in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region from 14 to 18 March 2021. Three experiments were conducted, comprising a control experiment without assimilation (CTL), a traditional three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) experiment, and a multi-scale three-dimensional variational (MS-3DVAR) experiment. The results indicated that the CTL method significantly underestimated the intensity and extent of the severe dust event, while the analysis fields and forecasting fields of PM concentration and AOD can be significantly improved in both 3DVAR and MS-3DVAR assimilation. Particularly, the MS-3DVAR assimilation approach yielded better-fitting extreme values than the 3DVAR method, mostly likely due to the multi-scale information from the observations used in the MS-3DVAR method. Compared to the CTL method, the correlation coefficient of MS-3DVAR assimilation between the assimilated PM10 analysis fields and observations increased from 0.24 to 0.93, and the positive assimilation effect persisted longer than 36 h. These findings suggest the effectiveness and prolonged influence of integrating high-resolution aerosol observations through MS-3DVAR assimilation in improving aerosol forecasting capabilities.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the causal relationships between blood metabolites and intracranial aneurysm, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and unruptured intracranial aneurysm.MethodsOur exposure sample consisted of 7,824 individuals from a genome-wide association study of human blood metabolites. Our outcome sample consisted of 79,429 individuals (7,495 cases and 71,934 controls) from the International Stroke Genetics Consortium, which conducted a genome-wide association study of intracranial aneurysm, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and unruptured intracranial aneurysm. We identified blood metabolites with a potential causal effect on intracranial aneurysms and conducted sensitivity analyses to validate our findings.ResultsAfter rigorous screening and Mendelian randomization tests, we found four, two, and three serum metabolites causally associated with intracranial aneurysm, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and unruptured intracranial aneurysm, respectively (all P < 0.05). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these associations.ConclusionsOur Mendelian randomization analysis demonstrated causal relationships between human blood metabolites and intracranial aneurysm, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and unruptured intracranial aneurysm. Further research is required to explore the potential of targeting these metabolites in the management of intracranial aneurysm.

IntroductionProlonged fasting is an intervention approach with potential benefits for individuals with obesity or metabolic disorders. Changes in gut microbiota during and after fasting may also have significant effects on the human body.MethodsHere we conducted a 7-days medically supervised water-only fasting for 46 obese volunteers and characterized their gut microbiota based on whole-metagenome sequencing of feces at five timepoints.ResultsSubstantial changes in the gut microbial diversity and composition were observed during fasting, with rapid restoration after fasting. The ecological pattern of the microbiota was also reassembled during fasting, reflecting the reduced metabolic capacity of diet-derived carbohydrates, while other metabolic abilities such as degradation of glycoproteins, amino acids, lipids, and organic acid metabolism, were enhanced. We identified a group of species that responded significantly to fasting, including 130 fasting-resistant (consisting of a variety of members of Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Fusobacteria) and 140 fasting-sensitive bacteria (mainly consisting of Firmicutes members). Functional comparison of the fasting-responded bacteria untangled the associations of taxon-specific functions (e.g., pentose phosphate pathway modules, glycosaminoglycan degradation, and folate biosynthesis) with fasting. Furthermore, we found that the serum and urine metabolomes of individuals were also substantially changed across the fasting procedure, and particularly, these changes were largely affected by the fasting-responded bacteria in the gut microbiota.DiscussionOverall, our findings delineated the patterns of gut microbiota alterations under prolonged fasting, which will boost future mechanistic and clinical intervention studies.

Background: Typical treatment of dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) emphasizes clinical procedures such as surgery, radiotherapy, and endovascular treatment. However, external factors of adverse psychological emotions in patients with DAVF before treatment have not yet been evaluated in a multicenter study. Objectives: This study aimed to fill the research gap regarding the effects of factors by evaluating the anxiety and depression status among patients with DAVF before and after endovascular treatment and identify factors influencing the development of anxiety and depression before their endovascular treatment. Methods: This retrospective study included 168 DAVF patients treated at two independent neurosurgical medical centers from December 2012 to December 2022. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) were assessed before and after endovascular treatment. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Statistical tests were performed to calculate the proportion of DAVF patients with anxiety and depression. A multivariate analysis was conducted to identify independent risk factors for anxiety and depression in patients with DAVF before endovascular treatment. Results: A significant decrease in the percentage of patients with anxiety and depression was observed in patients after endovascular treatment compared with before treatment. Patients with DAVF who were at a higher risk for anxiety and depression were females had multiple visits, comorbid conditions, and a lower economic status and were presented with symptoms. Conclusion: After endovascular treatment, the anxiety or depression symptoms of DAVF patients significantly improved. Our findings provide additional evidence to support the role of intravascular treatment in improved DAVF patients' psychological outcomes.

To meet the client’s new business requirements or add additional security protection functions, the already hosted network service extension problem in the cloud network based on network function virtualization was researched.The network service extension in the cloud network was modeled as an integer linear programming, considering the impact on initial service, extended graph deployment, resource capacity and virtual network function affinity constraints, and so on.To deal with the computational complexity and dynamism of future large-scale cloud networks, a QGA-based network service extension algorithm was proposed to improve solution efficiency and solution quality through quantum parallel computing.Simulation results prove that the efficient performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of extension successful ratio and average resource costs, and the proposed algorithm has low time complexity.

Abstract Network function virtualization provides programmable in-network middlewares by leveraging virtualization technologies and commodity hardware and has gained popularity among all mainstream network device manufacturers. Yet it is challenging to apply coverage-guided fuzzing, one of the state-of-the-art vulnerability discovery approaches, to those virtualized network devices, due to inevitable integrity protection adopted by those devices. In this paper, we propose a coverage-guided fuzzing framework NDFuzz for virtualized network devices with a novel integrity protection bypassing method, which is able to distinguish processes of virtualized network devices from hypervisors with a carefully designed non-intrusive page global directory inference technique. We implement NDFuzz atop of two black-box fuzzers and evaluate NDFuzz with three representative network protocols, SNMP , DHCP and NTP , on nine popular virtualized network devices. NDFuzz obtains an average 36% coverage improvement in comparison with its black-box counterparts. NDFuzz discovers 2 0-Day vulnerabilities and 1 1-Day vulnerability with coverage guidance while the black-box fuzzer can find only one of them. All discovered vulnerabilities are confirmed by corresponding vendors.

We show that the axial Casimir force (ACF) acting on a rotating nanoparticle can also appear in the proximity of a hyperbolic metasurface made of graphene ribbons since it was first demonstrated existing near a bi-isotropic material. The ACF can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude compared with that in the bi-isotropic configuration. We numerically demonstrate that the largest ACF exerted on the particle can be achieved when the rotation direction of the nanoparticle is parallel to the hyperbolic metasurface. ACF is also determined by the azimuth angle between the rotating axis and the edge of the metasurface. The dependence of ACF on the chemical potential and ribbon width of graphene is also investigated in detail. ACF increases as the chemical potential increases for fixed ribbon width. For given chemical potential, ACF increases first and then decreases after reaching the maximum value when the ribbon width increases. The results extend the application of hyperbolic metasurfaces in regulating Casimir interactions.

Recent population and animal studies have revealed a correlation between fat content and the severity of benzene-induced hematologic toxicity. However, the precise impact of lipid deposition on benzene-induced hematotoxicity and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established a mouse model with moderate lipid accumulation by subjecting the mice to an 8-week high-fat diet (45% kcal from fat, HFD), followed by 28-day inhalation of benzene at doses of 0, 1, 10, and 100 ppm. The results showed that benzene exposure caused a dose-dependent reduction of peripheral white blood cell (WBC) counts in both diet groups. Notably, this reduction was less pronounced in the HFD-fed mice, suggesting that moderate lipid accumulation mitigates benzene-related hematotoxicity. To investigate the molecular basis for this effect, we performed bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput transcriptome sequencing data, which revealed that moderate lipid deposition alters mouse metabolism and stress tolerance towards xenobiotics. Consistently, the expression of key metabolic enzymes, such as Cyp2e1 and Gsta1, were upregulated in the HFD-fed mice upon benzene exposure. Furthermore, we utilized a real-time exhaled breath detection technique to monitor exhaled benzene metabolites, and the results indicated that moderate lipid deposition enhanced metabolic activation and increased the elimination of benzene metabolites. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that moderate lipid deposition confers reduced susceptibility to benzene-induced hematotoxicity in mice, at least in part, by accelerating benzene metabolism and clearance.

The Nile River Basin (NRB) has experienced a notable rise in drought episodes in recent decades. The propagation of meteorological, agricultural, and groundwater drought dynamics in the NRB was investigated in this study. The following drought indices examined the correlation and propagation among meteorological, agricultural, and groundwater droughts. These are the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), soil moisture index, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE/GRACE-FO)-derived groundwater drought index (GGDI). These droughts were comprehensively evaluated in the NRB from 2003 to 2022. The cross-wavelet transform approach highlighted the links between droughts. The following are the key findings: (1) In the NRB, the cross-wavelet energy spectrum of wavelet coherence can indicate the internal connection between meteorological versus (vs.) agricultural and agricultural versus (vs.) groundwater drought. The time scale with the most significant correlation coefficient is the drought propagation time. (2) The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) correlated with agricultural and groundwater drought much more than the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), demonstrating that ENSO has an important impact on drought advancement. (3) The R2 values were 0.68 for GGDI vs. standardized soil moisture index (SSI), 0.71 for Blue Nile Region (BNR) GGDI vs. SSI, and 0.55 for SSI vs. Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Similarly, in the Lake Victoria Region (LVR), GGDI vs. SSI was 0.51 and SSI vs. SPEI was 0.55, but in the Bahr-el-Ghazal Region (BER), GGDI vs. SSI was 0.61 and SSI vs. SPEI was 0.27 during the whole research period with varied lag durations ranging from 1 to 6 months. Thus, the propagation of drought (i.e., meteorological, agricultural, and groundwater drought) dynamics has the potential to reshape our understanding of drought evolution, which could lead to early drought forecasting across the NRB and similar climatic regions.

Background and purposeData on in-stent stenosis (ISS) following the flow diverter (FD) implantation method are scarce and inconsistent. In the present study, we sought to determine the incidence of ISS and identify the factors that predict its severity via the use of ordinal logistic regression.MethodsA retrospective review of our center's electronic database was conducted to identify all patients with intracranial aneurysms (IAs) who received pipeline embolization device (PED) implantation between 2016 and 2020. Patient demographics, aneurysm characteristics, procedural information, and clinical and angiographic outcomes were reviewed. ISS was quantitatively assessed on angiographic follow-ups and graded as mild (50%). Ordinal logistic regression was conducted to determine the predictors of stenosis severity.ResultsA total of 240 patients with 252 aneurysms treated in 252 procedures were enrolled in this study. ISS has been detected in 135 (53.6%) lesions, with a mean follow-up time of 6.53 ± 3.26 months. The ISS was mild in 66 (48.9%) cases, moderate in 52 (38.5%) cases, and severe in 17 (12.6%) cases. All patients were asymptomatic, except for two of them with severe stenosis who presented with symptoms of acute cerebral thrombosis. Ordinal logistic regression identified that younger age and a longer procedure duration were independent predictors of a higher likelihood of ISS.ConclusionISS is a common angiographic finding after PED implantation for IAs and is presented as a largely benign course through long-term follow-up. Patients who were younger in age and had a longer procedure duration were found to be at a greater risk of developing ISS.

During the satellite pulse propagation and reception, the altimeter waveform is inevitably affected by noise. To reduce the noise level in Jason altimeter waveforms, we used singular spectrum analysis (SSA), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), and the combination of SSA and EMD to obtain the denoised waveforms. The advantages of the combined method were verified and the accuracy of the mean sea surface height (MSSH) model was improved. Comparing the denoising effect of the three methods, the results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error are effectively improved by the combination of SSA and EMD. The sea surface heights (SSHs) were remeasured with a 50% threshold retracker of denoised waveforms, and the MSSH model of the Caspian Sea with a grid of 1′×1′ was established from the retracked SSHs of Jason-1/2/3. Taking the mean value of the four models as a control, it is found that the model calculated by the combined denoising method has the highest accuracy. This indicates that using the combined denoising method to reduce the noise level is beneficial to improve the accuracy of the MSSH model.

Conjugated polymers are promising semiconductors for stretchable electronic devices but combining important properties such as high charge mobility, stability and stretchability remains challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate the synthesis of a thiophene based semiconducting polymer with cleavable side chains which shows significant improvement of charge mobility, stability and stretchability.

The morphology of urban residential blocks in China, which is strictly affected by regulations, can potentially improve or deteriorate microclimates. This paper first proposes a framework for identifying typical residential block typologies using Nanjing as an example. A thorough investigation, consisting of 114 samples, was conducted, and 18 typical residential block typologies were summarized. Second, 3D non-isothermal numerical simulations were performed on the hottest days of summer using the ENVI-met. The effect of morphological indices on the microclimate at the pedestrian level was explored using statistical methods and a novel graphic method named m-SpaceMate. The results revealed a strong correlation between the urban heat island intensity (UHII), mean radiation temperature, and universal thermal climate index (UTCI) and floor area ratio (FAR), as well as between wind velocity (U) and building coverage ratio (BCR). A significant increase in FAR (by approximately 1.0) can result in a low UTCI that was driven by MRT and shading conditions. Six-floor blocks, with FAR between 1.8 and 2.1, had a better overall thermal environment (except for lower U) than that of 11-floor blocks. When considering a similar BCR, blocks with slab-type buildings tended to have a U that was higher by approximately 30%.

Abstract In network function virtualization, resource allocation is one of the key techniques to ensure the QoS of service requests in face of the uncertain traffic demand and traffic fluctuation of user services. The previous related works usually assume that the traffic demand is a deterministic value and then reallocate substrate resources to deal with the demand uncertainty and traffic fluctuation during operation. In response to performance degradation caused by demand uncertainty and traffic fluctuation, the paper models the service function chain orchestration under demand uncertainty as a robust optimization problem, where the parameter Γ is introduced to control the conservativeness of the solution. On this basis, the strong duality theory is used to transform the original problem into a mixed‐integer linear programming, and then devise an exact Robust Service Provisioning (RSP) algorithm. The simulation evaluation demonstrates that the proposed algorithm could achieve different levels of robustness and make a trade‐off between robustness and cost. The impact of Γ value on the realized robustness and price of robustness is also analysed. Thus, the algorithm proposed could get an effective service function chain orchestration scheme under uncertain traffic demands and provide a reference of the total cost.

Accurately characterizing the mechanical responses and cracking mechanism of three-dimensional confined fractured rocks under coupled static-dynamic loading is of paramount importance for underground engineering construction. Using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system, five groups of single-flawed specimens with the axial prestress ratio from 0 to 0.8 are tested at the strain rates in the range of 65–205 s−1 under a fixed radial prestress. Our results indicate that both the dynamic strength and total strength show significant positive linear correlations with the strain rate, and the dynamic strength shows more strain rate sensitivity under higher axial prestress. The dynamic strength and corresponding failure strain decrease with increasing axial prestress, while the total strength is barely affected by the axial prestress. The dynamic elastic modulus initially increases before the axial prestress ratio reaches 0.6 and then decreases. The failure pattern of tested specimens changes from single diagonal failure to an “X” shaped conjugated failure as axial prestress increases. Furthermore, the progressive cracking processes of confined single-flawed specimens under different axial prestresses are numerically visualized by the discrete element method (DEM). Based on the displacement trend lines on both sides of cracking surface, five crack types are identified and classified in our simulation. The displacement field distributions of the DEM models reveal that the macroscopic single diagonal failure under lower axial prestress is mainly controlled by mixed tensile-shear cracks, while the “X” shaped conjugated failure under higher axial prestress is shear dominated.

Data sharing and analyzing among different devices in mobile edge computing is valuable for social innovation and development. The limitation to the achievement of this goal is the data privacy risk. Therefore, existing studies mainly focus on enhancing the data privacy-protection capability. On the one hand, direct data leakage is avoided through federated learning by converting raw data into model parameters for transmission. On the other hand, the security of federated learning is further strengthened by privacy-protection techniques to defend against inference attack. However, privacy-protection techniques may reduce the training accuracy of the data while improving the security. Particularly, trading off data security and accuracy is a major challenge in dynamic mobile edge computing scenarios. To address this issue, we propose a federated-learning-based privacy-protection scheme, FLPP. Then, we build a layered adaptive differential privacy model to dynamically adjust the privacy-protection level in different situations. Finally, we design a differential evolutionary algorithm to derive the most suitable privacy-protection policy for achieving the optimal overall performance. The simulation results show that FLPP has an advantage of 8∼34% in overall performance. This demonstrates that our scheme can enable data to be shared securely and accurately.

Constructing cross-linked networks with different topologies is attractive but challenging. Here the authors present mechanically interlocked networks cross-linked by a molecular necklace whose peculiar architectural and dynamic features endow the materials with robust yet mechanically adaptive properties.

Abstract We used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to analyze the "half-moon" like phenomenon and its characteristics and observe 1-year follow-up of the in-stent restenosis (ISR) incidence after the drug eluted stent (DES) implantation in patients with the myocardial bridge (MB). Patients were retrospectively analyzed from January 2013 to December 2019. We used OCT to check 45 patients with MB and found a visible muscle layer (VML) around the vessel adventitia with the same or high density compared to the vessel media layer. There was not any significant difference in maximal thickness, maximal arch, and total length between the half-moon layer and the visible muscle layer groups (p > 0.05). Maximal thickness, arch, and total length of the half-moon layer were significantly positively related to VML, respectively (r = 0.962, 0.985, 0.742, p 0.05). OCT could evaluate MB characteristics accurately compared to IVUS and had a higher rate of detecting MB than CAG. Moreover, it is safe and effective to guide DES covering the mild MB segment in patients with severe coronary lesions detected by the OCT.

Self-supervised learning methods have received much attention in skeleton-based human action recognition. These methods rely on pretext tasks to utilize unlabeled data and learn an effective feature encoder. In this paper, a novel self-supervised learning method is proposed. First, we design a new pretext task called view enhanced jigsaw puzzle (VEJP) to improve the learning difficulty of the encoder. The VEJP introduces multi-view information into the jigsaw puzzle, thus forcing the encoder to learn view-independent high-level features of human skeletons. Based on the encoder trained by VEJP, we propose the view pooling encoder (VPE) to integrate the information of multiple views with the pooling mechanism, and the features extracted by VPE are more robust and distinguishable. In addition, by adjusting the difficulty of VEJP, the influence of the pretext task difficulty on the downstream task performance is studied, and the experimental results show that the pretext tasks should be moderately difficult to achieve effective feature learning. Our method achieves competitive results on representative benchmark datasets. It provides a strong baseline for the jigsaw puzzle task and shows advantages in situations where the number of labeled data is minimal.

IntroductionAnkylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic autoimmune disease, has been linked to the gut bacteriome.MethodsTo investigate the characteristics of the gut virome in AS, we profiled the gut viral community of 193 AS patients and 59 healthy subjects based on a metagenome-wide analysis of fecal metagenomes from two publicly available datasets.ResultsAS patients revealed a significant decrease in gut viral richness and a considerable alteration of the overall viral structure. At the family level, AS patients had an increased abundance of Gratiaviridae and Quimbyviridae and a decreased abundance of Drexlerviridae and Schitoviridae. We identified 1,004 differentially abundant viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) between patients and controls, including a higher proportion of AS-enriched Myoviridae viruses and control-enriched Siphoviridae viruses. Moreover, the AS-enriched vOTUs were more likely to infect bacteria such as Flavonifractor, Achromobacter, and Eggerthellaceae, whereas the control-enriched vOTUs were more likely to be Blautia, Ruminococcus, Collinsella, Prevotella, and Faecalibacterium bacteriophages. Additionally, some viral functional orthologs differed significantly in frequency between the AS-enriched and control-enriched vOTUs, suggesting the functional role of these AS-associated viruses. Moreover, we trained classification models based on gut viral signatures to discriminate AS patients from healthy controls, with an optimal area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) up to 0.936, suggesting the clinical potential of the gut virome for diagnosing AS.DiscussionThis work provides novel insight into the AS gut virome, and the findings may guide future mechanistic and therapeutic studies for other autoimmune diseases.

Background and PurposeRadiomics features and The Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images (VASARI) standard appear to be quantitative and qualitative evaluations utilized to determine glioma grade. This study developed a preoperative model to predict glioma grade and improve the efficacy of clinical strategies by combining these two assessment methods.Materials and MethodsPatients diagnosed with glioma between March 2017 and September 2018 who underwent surgery and histopathology were enrolled in this study. A total of 3840 radiomic features were calculated; however, using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method, only 16 features were chosen to generate a radiomic signature. Three predictive models were developed using radiomic features and VASARI standard. The performance and validity of models were evaluated using decision curve analysis and 10-fold nested cross-validation.ResultsOur study included 102 patients: 35 with low-grade glioma (LGG) and 67 with high-grade glioma (HGG). Model 1 utilized both radiomics and the VASARI standard, which included radiomic signatures, proportion of edema, and deep white matter invasion. Models 2 and 3 were constructed with radiomics or VASARI, respectively, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.937 and 0.831, respectively, which was less than that of Model 1, with an AUC of 0.966.ConclusionThe combination of radiomics features and the VASARI standard is a robust model for predicting glioma grades.

The integration of semi-transparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) in greenhouses offers new agrivoltaic opportunities to meet the growing demands for sustainable food production. The tailored absorption/transmission spectra of ST-OSCs impacts the power generated as well as crop growth, development and responses to the biotic and abiotic environments. To characterize crop responses to ST-OSCs, we grew lettuce and tomato, traditional greenhouse crops, under three ST-OSC filters that create different light spectra. Lettuce yield and early tomato development are not negatively affected by the modified light environment. Our genomic analysis reveals that lettuce production exhibits beneficial traits involving nutrient content and nitrogen utilization while select ST-OSCs impact regulation of flowering initiation in tomato. These results suggest that ST-OSCs integrated into greenhouses are not only a promising technology for energy-neutral, sustainable and climate-change protected crop production, but can deliver benefits beyond energy considerations.

High-power ns-pulsed lasers have been widely used in many significant applications, including laser radar, remote-sensing, biomedicine, industrial process, and military defense. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) provides an efficient method for extending the wavelengths of laser radiation. Due to the excellent thermal conductivity, high damage threshold, and high gain coefficient, diamond crystal is considered the most potential SRS material to address laser output in specific wavelength regions with high power, high beam quality, and high conversion efficiency. This paper reviews the advances of ns-pulsed crystalline Raman lasers and particularly emphasizes the progress of ns-pulsed diamond Raman lasers (DRLs) in the past decade. DRL has demonstrated a maximum peak power of 1.2 MW at 1.240 μm with a pulse duration of 8 ns. It can also generate high-energy ns pulses featuring Fourier-limited spectral linewidth. The superior optical characteristics and the mature technology of synthetic diamond crystal will make DRL a promising technique to achieve higher performance ns laser pulses.

Background and purposeThe relationship between the tortuosity of the parent artery and treatment outcomes is not well established. We investigate the association between parent artery tortuosity and flow diverter (FD) treatment outcomes in patients with internal carotid artery aneurysms in this study.MethodsA retrospective review study was conducted to identify all patients with internal carotid artery aneurysms who were implanted with Pipeline embolization device (PED) between 2016 and 2020. The relationship between parent artery tortuosity and aneurysm complete occlusion (CO) and in-stent stenosis (ISS) was analyzed. The mathematical parameters “Curvature”, “torsion”, and “DM” extracted from the parent artery were utilized to quantify the parent artery tortuosity. A vascular narrowing of greater than 25% was categorized as ISS. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify significant independent predictors. Furthermore, we compared the performance of four machine learning algorithms and Logistic Regression model in predicting ISS.ResultsThis research included 62 patients who with internal carotid artery aneurysms. In 49 (79%) cases, follow-up angiography (mean follow-up duration 11.7 ±7.3 months) revealed CO of the aneurysm. ISS was detected in 22 (35.5%) cases. According to univariate analysis, parent artery tortuosity and other variables were not associated with CO (p > 0.1). Maximum curvature (OR = 1.084; 95% CI, 1.008–1.165; p = 0.03) and DM (OR = 0.01; 95% CI, 0–0.488; p = 0.02) exhibited strong independent associations with ISS in multivariate analysis. The SVM model is superior to the conventional Logistic Regression model and the other models in predicting ISS.ConclusionsThe tortuosity of the parent artery may affect the treatment outcome of FD stenting. We found that parent artery tortuosity was associated with ISS, but not with aneurysm complete occlusion following PED stenting for internal carotid artery aneurysms in this study. Parent arteries with higher maximum curvature and lower DM were more likely to develop ISS.

Precisely understanding the dynamic mechanical properties and failure modes of rocks subjected to true triaxial stress state (σ1 > σ2 > σ3, where σ1, σ2, and σ3 are the major principal stress, intermediate principal stress, and minor principal stress, respectively) is essential to the safety of underground engineering. However, in the laboratory, it is difficult to maintain the constant true triaxial stress state of rocks during the dynamic testing process. Herein, a numerical servo triaxial Hopkinson bar (NSTHB) was developed to study the dynamic responses of rocks confronted with a true triaxial stress state, in which lateral stresses can maintain constant. The results indicate that the dynamic strength and elastic modulus of rocks increase with the rise of intermediate principal stress σ2, while the dynamic elastic modulus is independent of the dynamic strain rate. Simulated acoustic emission distributions indicate that the intermediate principal stress σ2 dramatically affects dynamic failure modes of triaxial confined rocks. As σ2 increases, the failure pattern switches from a single diagonal shear zone into two parallel shear zones with a small slant. Moreover, a recent triaxial Hopkinson bar experimental system using three bar pairs is also numerically established, and the measuring discrepancies are identified between the two numerical bar systems. The proposed NSTHB system provides a controllable tool for studying the dynamic triaxial behavior of rocks.

Abstract Mycoplasma capricolum subsp.subsp. capripneumonia (Mccp) and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp.sbusp. capri (Mmc) cause caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and mycoplasmal pneumonia in goats and sheep (MPGS), respectively. These diseases cannot be identified on clinical symptoms alone and it is laborious to distinguish them using biochemical methods. It is therefore important to establish a simple, rapid identification method for Mccp and Mmc. BackgroundThe Pipeline embolization device (PED) is a flow diverter used to treat intracranial aneurysms. In-stent stenosis (ISS) is a common complication of PED placement that can affect long-term outcome. This study aimed to establish a feasible, effective, and reliable model to predict ISS using machine learning methodology.MethodsWe retrospectively examined clinical, laboratory, and imaging data obtained from 435 patients with intracranial aneurysms who underwent PED placement in our center. Aneurysm morphological measurements were manually measured on pre- and posttreatment imaging studies by three experienced neurointerventionalists. ISS was defined as stenosis rate >50% within the PED. We compared the performance of five machine learning algorithms (elastic net (ENT), support vector machine, Xgboost, Gaussian Naïve Bayes, and random forest) in predicting ISS. Shapley additive explanation was applied to provide an explanation for the predictions.ResultsA total of 69 ISS cases (15.2%) were identified. Six predictors of ISS (age, obesity, balloon angioplasty, internal carotid artery location, neck ratio, and coefficient of variation of red cell volume distribution width) were identified. The ENT model had the best predictive performance with a mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.709 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.697–0.721), mean sensitivity of 77.9% (95% CI, 75.1–80.6%), and mean specificity of 63.4% (95% CI, 60.8–65.9%) in Monte Carlo cross-validation. Shapley additive explanation analysis showed that internal carotid artery location was the most important predictor of ISS.ConclusionOur machine learning model can predict ISS after PED placement for treatment of intracranial aneurysms and has the potential to improve patient outcomes.

Background and PurposeUnruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) are increasingly being detected in clinical practice. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly used to assist diagnostic techniques and shows encouraging prospects. In this study, we reported the protocol and preliminary results of the establishment of an intracranial aneurysm database for AI application based on computed tomography angiography (CTA) images.MethodsThrough a review of picture archiving and communication systems, we collected CTA images of patients with aneurysms between January 2010 and March 2021. The radiologists performed manual segmentation of all diagnosed aneurysms on subtraction CTA as the basis for automatic aneurysm segmentation. Then, AI will be applied to two stages of aneurysm treatment, namely, automatic aneurysm detection and segmentation model based on the CTA image and the aneurysm risk prediction model.ResultsThree medical centers have been included in this study so far. A total of 3,190 cases of CTA examinations with 4,124 aneurysms were included in the database. All identified aneurysms from CTA images that enrolled in this study were manually segmented on subtraction CTA by six readers. We developed a structure of 3D-Unet for aneurysm detection and segmentation in CTA images. The algorithm was developed and tested using a total of 2,272 head CTAs with 2,938 intracranial aneurysms. The recall and false positives per case (FP/case) of this model for detecting aneurysms were 0.964 and 2.01, and the Dice values for aneurysm segmentation were 0.783.ConclusionThis study introduces the protocol and preliminary results of the establishment of the intracranial aneurysm database for AI applications based on CTA images. The establishment of a multicenter database based on CTA images of intracranial aneurysms is the basis for the application of AI in the diagnosis and treatment of aneurysms. In addition to segmentation, AI should have great potential for aneurysm treatment and management in the future.
