Abstract Mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxin posing risks to human health, is cycled through vegetation uptake, which is susceptible to climate change impacts. However, the extent and pattern of these impacts are largely unknown, obstructing predictions of Hg’s fate in terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we evaluate the effects of climate change on vegetation elemental Hg [Hg(0)] uptake using a state-of-the-art global terrestrial Hg model (CLM5-Hg) that incorporates plant physiology. In a business-as-usual scenario, the terrestrial Hg(0) sink is predicted to decrease by 1870 Mg yr−1 in 2100, that is ~60% lower than the present-day condition. We find a potential decoupling between the trends of CO2 assimilation and Hg(0) uptake process by vegetation in the 21st century, caused by the decreased stomatal conductance with increasing CO2. This implies a substantial influx of Hg into aquatic ecosystems, posing an elevated threat that warrants consideration during the evaluation of the effectiveness of the Minamata Convention.

Abstract Dynamical downscaling is vital for generating finer-scale climate projections. Recently, a set of simulations under four types of 1.5/2 °C global warming scenarios are available with Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Earth System Model (NESM). However, NESM3’s bias in large-scale driving variables would degrade downscaled simulations. We corrected NESM3 bias in terms of climate mean and inter-annual variance against ERA5 using a novel bias correction method and then produced a set of bias-corrected datasets for dynamical downscaling. The bias-corrected NESM3 spans the historical period for 1979–2014 and four future scenarios (i.e., 1.5 °C overshoot for 2070–2100, stabilized 1.5/2 °C for 2070–2100, and transient 2 °C for 2031–2061) with 1.25° × 1.25° horizontal resolution at six-hourly intervals. Our evaluation suggests that bias-corrected NESM3 outperforms the original NESM3 in the climatological mean of seasonal mean and variability, as well as climate extreme events during the historical period. This bias-corrected dataset is expected to generate more reliable projections for regional climate and environment under 1.5/2 °C global warming.

IntroductionAssessing the influence of respiratory assistive devices on the diaphragm mobility is essential for advancing patient care and improving treatment outcomes. Existing respiratory assistive robots have not yet effectively assessed their impact on diaphragm mobility. In this study, we introduce for the first time a non-invasive, real-time clinically feasible ultrasound method to evaluate the impact of soft wearable robots on diaphragm displacement.MethodsWe measured and compared diaphragm displacement and lung volume in eight participants during both spontaneous and robotic-assisted respiration. Building on these measurements, we proposed a human-robot coupled two-compartment respiratory mechanics model that elucidates the underlying mechanism by which our extracorporeal wearable robots augments respiration. Specifically, the soft robot applies external compression to the abdominal wall muscles, inducing their inward movement, which consequently pushes the diaphragm upward and enhances respiratory function. Finally, we investigated the level and shape of various robotic assistive forces on diaphragm motion.ResultsThis robotic intervention leads to a significant increase in average diaphragm displacement by 1.95 times and in lung volume by 2.14 times compared to spontaneous respiration. Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed respiratory mechanics model is confirmed by the experimental results, with less than 7% error in measurements of both diaphragm displacement and lung volume. Finally, the magnitude of robotic assistive forces positively correlates with diaphragm movement, while the shape of the forces shows no significant relationship with diaphragm activity.ConclusionOur experimental findings validate the effective assistance mechanism of the proposed robot, which enhances diaphragm mobility and assists in ventilation through extracorporeal robotic intervention. This robotic system can assist with ventilation while increasing diaphragm mobility, potentially resolving the issue of diaphragm atrophy. Additionally, this work paves the way for improved robotic designs and personalized assistance, tailored to the dynamics of the diaphragm in respiratory rehabilitation.

This paper investigates the secrecy performance of a multi-relay non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network. Considering the presence of eavesdroppers, an optimal relay selection scheme and a jamming signal transmission scheme for both amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) strategies are proposed. However, the resource allocation problem aimed at maximizing the effective secure throughput (EST) of the system is non-convex. It is difficult to directly solve this optimization problem using conventional methods. As such, a Q-learning approach to solve the resource allocation problem in this system is applied, and an innovative reward function that can maximize the communication quality of edge users while ensuring secure communication of nearby users is designed. According to the analysis of the simulation results, the convergence of the proposed scheme is verified. Under the same conditions, DF relays achieve a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SINR) at the user terminal, and the EST is closely related to the transmission power of the source node and the relays. The numerical results also show that compared to conventional power allocation methods, the proposed method achieves a larger average EST and provides better confidentiality performance.

Abstract Land use and land cover changes (LULCCs) can influence surface temperature through local and nonlocal biophysical processes, which remain inadequately addressed. In this study, we separate the local and nonlocal effects of historical (1850–2014) LULCCs based on model outputs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6. We also attempt to explore the sources of intermodel differences in the effects of LULCCs. The multimodel mean shows a cooling effect of −0.05°C (with an intermodel range of −0.24–0.06°C) at the global scale due to cropland and pastureland expansion, consisting of dominant nonlocal cooling of −0.06°C (with an intermodel range of −0.26–0.06°C) and slight local warming of 0.01°C (with an intermodel range of −0.01–0.05°C). The modeling results show some clear consistency in the effects of LULCCs despite considerable intermodel uncertainties. The local effects cause warming at low latitudes and cooling in boreal regions via changes in upward shortwave radiation and sensible and latent heat fluxes. The nonlocal effects mainly cause cooling via decreases in downward longwave radiation and increases in upward shortwave radiation. Intermodel differences in the total effects are dominated by those in the nonlocal effects, which are further attributed to divergent changes in downward longwave radiation and sensible heat flux across the models. This study highlights the importance of the nonlocal effects of LULCCs in terms of strength and intermodel uncertainty, with implications for designing land‐based solutions aimed at climate change mitigation.

Abstract Tibetan Plateau (TP) snow cover is featured by sub‐seasonal changes, affecting weather and climate in surrounding and downstream areas. Previous studies emphasize the effect of background atmospheric circulation on rapid changes of TP snow cover as a whole. However, spatial discrepant changes of snow cover over the TP with complex topography and uneven snowfall remain unaddressed. Our research indicates that snow cover fraction dominates the rapid changes of surface albedo across the TP, and snow depth also significantly influences surface albedo changes through modulating snow albedo in central and eastern TP with shallow snow. However, the excessive snow amount and empirical snow cover fraction schemes introduce spatially divergent biases of surface albedo changes in simulations. Our research highlights the instant response of TP surface albedo to both snow coverage and depth in snow season, and provides a promising perspective for improving TP snow and surface albedo simulations.

Objective:. Due to the characteristics of insidious onset and early metastasis of pancreatic cancer (PC), patients are often diagnosed at an advanced stage and often delayed in completing surgical resection timely, resulting in poor prognosis. Therefore, this study aims to explore the expression of potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 2 (KCNH2) in PC and its relationship with clinicopathological parameters and the related mechanisms. Methods:. GEPIA database and immunohistochemical staining were used to analyze the difference in KCNH2 expression between PC and adjacent tissue in RNA and protein levels. Chi-squared test was used to evaluate the relationship between KCNH2 expression and clinicopathological features. The Cox regression model was used for multivariate analysis and univariate analysis. Histological diagnosis was performed according to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria to evaluate the relationship between KCNH2 expression and clinicopathological features. Results:. KCNH2 expression was upregulated in PC compared with normal pancreatic tissue. In addition, the knockdown of KCNH2 inhibits PC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transformation and promotes their apoptosis. In addition, clinical data showed that the abnormal expression of KCNH2 in PC was related to the tumor stage. Patients with high expression of KCNH2 had a poor prognosis. Conclusions:. KCNH2 is expected to be a novel targeted molecule in treating PC.

Traditional switching operations require on-site work, and the high voltage generated by arc discharges can pose a risk of injury to the operator. Therefore, a combination of visual servo and robot control is used to localize the switching operation and construct hand–eye calibration equations. The solution to the hand–eye calibration equations is coupled with the rotation matrix and translation vectors, and it depends on the initial value determination. This article presents a convex relaxation global optimization hand–eye calibration algorithm based on dual quaternions. Firstly, the problem model is simplified using the mathematical tools of dual quaternions, and then the linear matrix inequality convex optimization method is used to obtain a rotation matrix with higher accuracy. Afterwards, the calibration equations of the translation vectors are rewritten, and a new objective function is established to solve the coupling influence between them, maintaining positioning precision at approximately 2.9 mm. Considering the impact of noise on the calibration process, Gaussian noise is added to the solutions of the rotation matrix and translation vector to make the data more closely resemble the real scene in order to evaluate the performance of different hand–eye calibration algorithms. Eventually, an experiment comparing different hand–eye calibration methods proves that the proposed algorithm is better than other hand–eye calibration algorithms in terms of calibration accuracy, robustness to noise, and stability, satisfying the accuracy requirements of switching operations.

The glutathione S-transferases (GSTs, EC 2.5.1.18) constitute a versatile enzyme family with pivotal roles in plant stress responses and detoxification processes. Recent discoveries attributed the additional function of facilitating anthocyanin intracellular transportation in plants to GSTs. Our study identified 178 VcGST genes from 12 distinct subfamilies in the blueberry genome. An uneven distribution was observed among these genes across blueberry’s chromosomes. Members within the same subfamily displayed homogeneity in gene structure and conserved protein motifs, whereas marked divergence was noted among subfamilies. Functional annotations revealed that VcGSTs were significantly enriched in several gene ontology and KEGG pathway categories. Promoter regions of VcGST genes predominantly contain light-responsive, MYB-binding, and stress-responsive elements. The majority of VcGST genes are subject to purifying selection, with whole-genome duplication or segmental duplication serving as key processes that drive the expansion of the VcGST gene family. Notably, during the ripening of the blueberry fruit, 100 VcGST genes were highly expressed, and the expression patterns of 24 of these genes demonstrated a strong correlation with the dynamic content of fruit anthocyanins. Further analysis identified VcGSTF8, VcGSTF20, and VcGSTF22 as prime candidates of VcGST genes involved in the anthocyanin intracellular transport. This study provides a reference for the exploration of anthocyanin intracellular transport mechanisms and paves the way for investigating the spectrum of GST functions in blueberries.

Abstract The annual precipitation in North China and South China shows a dipole pattern with a clear inter-decadal transition around the late 1970s. However, the relative contribution of internal variability and external forcing to this inter-decadal transition is still unclear. Here, we separate internal variability from the externally forced climate response through a set of dynamical downscaling simulations with lateral boundary conditions derived from reanalysis data and a large ensemble mean of the CMIP5 historical simulations. We find that internal variability accounts for about 65 and 55% of the inter-decadal transition of the annual precipitation in South and North China, respectively. By contrast, external forcing accounts for about 70% of the warming trend in eastern China over the second half of the 20th century. This study highlights the differential response of regional precipitation and air temperature to internal variability and external forcing over eastern China on an inter-decadal timescale.

The perception of voluntary respiratory consciousness is quite important in some situations, such as respiratory assistance and respiratory rehabilitation training, and the key signatures about voluntary respiration control may lie in the neural signals from brain manifested as electroencephalography (EEG). The present work aims to explore whether there exists correlation between voluntary respiration and scalp EEG. Evoke voluntary respiration of different intensities, while collecting EEG and respiration signal synchronously. Data from 11 participants were analyzed. Spectrum characteristics at low-frequency band were studied. Computation of EEG-respiration phase lock value (PLV) and EEG sample entropy were conducted as well. When breathing voluntarily, the 0–2 Hz band EEG power is significantly enhanced in frontal and right-parietal area. The distance between main peaks belonging to the two signals in 0–2 Hz spectrum graph tends to get smaller, while EEG-respiration PLV increases in frontal area. Besides, the sample entropy of EEG shows a trend of decreasing during voluntary respiration in both areas. There’s a strong correlation between voluntary respiration and scalp EEG. Significance: The discoveries will provide guidelines for developing a voluntary respiratory consciousness identifying method and make it possible to monitor people’s intention of respiration by noninvasive BCI.

Compound hot-dry events (CHDEs) are among the deadliest climate hazards and are occurring with increasing frequency under global warming. The Yangtze River Basin in China experienced a record-breaking CHDE in the summer of 2022, causing severe damage to human societies and ecosystems. Recent studies have emphasized the role of atmospheric circulation anomalies in driving this event. However, the contribution of land–atmosphere feedback to the development of this event remains unclear. Here, we investigated the impacts of soil moisture-temperature coupling on the development of this concurrent heatwave and drought. We showed that large amounts of surface net radiation were partitioned to sensible heat instead of latent heat as the soil moisture-temperature coupling pattern shifted from energy-limited to water-limited under low soil moisture conditions, forming positive land–atmosphere feedback and leading to unprecedented hot extremes in August. The spatial heterogeneity of hot extremes was also largely modulated by the land–atmosphere coupling strength. Furthermore, enhanced land–atmosphere feedback has played an important role in intensifying CHDEs in this traditional humid region. This study improves the understanding of the development of CHDEs from three aspects, including timing, intensity, and spatial distribution, and enables more effective early warning of CHDEs.

Abstract East Asia is undergoing significant climate changes and these changes are likely to grow in the future. It is urgent to characterize both the mechanisms controlling climate and the response of the East Asian climate system at global warming of 1.5 and 2 °C above pre-industrial levels (GW1.5 and GW2 hereafter). This study reviews recent studies on East Asian climate change at GW1.5 and GW2. The intensity and variability of the East Asian summer monsoon are expected to increase modestly, accompanied by an enhancement of water vapor transport. Other expected changes include the intensification of the Western Pacific Subtropical High and an intensified and southward shift of the East Asian jet, while the intensity of the East Asian winter monsoon is projected to reduce with high uncertainty. Meanwhile, the frequency of ENSO may increase in a warming world with great uncertainty. Significant warming and wetting occur in East Asia, with more pronounced intensity, frequency, and duration of climate extremes at GW2 than that at GW1.5. The fine structure of regional climate changes and the presence and location of various warming hotspots, however, show substantial divergence among different model simulations. Furthermore, the Asian climate responses can differ substantially between the transient and stabilized GW1.5 and GW2, which has important implications for emission policies. Thus, to better plan effective mitigation and adaptation activities, further research including an in-depth exploration of the divergent responses in transient versus stabilized scenarios, the quantification of future projection uncertainties, and improvements of the methods to reduce model uncertainties are required.

A new study finds that deforestation in the northern extratropics can enhance horizontal temperature advection through biogeophysical processes, leading to higher local daily temperature variability, particularly in winter.

Abstract The Loess Plateau of China has witnessed a remarkable greening trend due to vegetation restoration in recent decades. However, the precipitation response to greening remains unclear, and the hydrological effect of greening is controversial. Here, we revisited biophysical effects of greening on precipitation over the plateau during 2002–2015 using the state‐of‐the‐art water vapor tracer embedded in a regional coupled model. We find that greening can promote the growing season precipitation (0.45 mm·day−1), with 15% and 85% of the precipitation increment resulting from increases in the local evapotranspiration and the water vapor inflow from outside the plateau, respectively. As a consequence, the enhanced precipitation can compensate for the terrestrial water loss driven by the increased evapotranspiration, leading to a slight increase in the water yield. This study highlights the dominant role of the nonlocal effect in precipitation responses to greening in this region.

BackgroundIt has been reported that postoperative adjuvant TACE (PA-TACE) treatment decreases recurrence and significantly improves the survival of patients who undergo radical resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with high-risk recurrence factors. However, when to perform PA-TACE has not been fully studied.MethodsWe retrospectively collected the clinicopathologic characteristics of the patients with HCC between October 2013 and June 2020. The optimal cutoff value for PA-TACE time was determined based on the R package “maxstat”. Logistic regression and Cox regression analysis were used to determine the effect of the choice of PA-TACE timing on prognosis.ResultsThe analysis was performed on 789 patients with HCC, and 484 patients were finally involved and were divided into training cohort (378) and validation cohort (106). The PA-TACE timing was found to be associated with survival outcomes. Multivariate logistic analysis found independent predictors of the PA-TACE timing, including gender and history of HBV. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that Ki-67, tumor size, MVI and the PA-TACE timing were independent prognostic factors for RFS in HCC patients.ConclusionsBased on this study, HCC patients with high-risk recurrence factors can receive personalized assistance in undergoing PA-TACE treatment and improve their survival outcomes.

This paper describes the design of a bionic soft exoskeleton and demonstrates its feasibility for assisting the expectoration function rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: A human–robot coupling respiratory mechanic model is established to mimic human cough, and a synergic inspire–expire assistance strategy is proposed to maximize the peak expiratory flow (PEF), the key metric for promoting cough intensity. The negative pressure module of the exoskeleton is a soft “iron lung” using layer-jamming actuation. It assists inspiration by increasing insufflation to mimic diaphragm and intercostal muscle contraction. The positive pressure module exploits soft origami actuators for assistive expiration; it pressures human abdomen and bionically “pushes” the diaphragm upward. Results: The maximum increase in PEF ratios for mannequins, healthy participants, and patients with SCI with robotic assistance were 57.67%, 278.10%, and 124.47%, respectively. The soft exoskeleton assisted one tetraplegic SCI patient to cough up phlegm successfully. Conclusion: The experimental results suggest that the proposed soft exoskeleton is promising for assisting the expectoration ability of SCI patients in everyday life scenarios. Significance: The proposed soft exoskeleton is promising for advancing the application field of rehabilitation exoskeletons from motor functions to respiratory functions.

In this study, a novel gas-extruded membrane bearing was developed, and an optimization algorithm was applied to solve a Reynolds equation that describes the load-bearing characteristics of this bearing. This was effective in improving the solution rate of the Reynolds equation, significantly reducing the difficulty of obtaining a solution, avoiding high programming difficulty, and achieving a high solution accuracy. Through a comparative analysis, the error in the accuracy of the alternating implicit difference method was addressed, and the traditional finite element method for solving the same model was verified, with an average error of 2% reached to verify its applicability. The algorithm was also used to analyze the load-bearing capacity of the gas-extruded membrane bearing. This revealed not only a positive correlation of the average load-bearing capacity of the gas-extruded membrane bearing with the frequency and amplitude of vibration but also a negative correlation with radial clearance, with the cut-off frequency reaching 19 Khz. The load-bearing capacity of the gas-extruded membrane bearing proposed in this paper reached 1.28 N, which indicated an error of 3.28% with the theoretical approach. To sum up, this research provides an important reference for the design and manufacture of novel gas-extruded membrane bearings.

Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) rhizosphere microorganisms can significantly increase the absorption area and improve the efficiency of rhizospheric nutrient uptake. However, there has been little research on blueberry rhizosphere microorganisms, especially those that can complement root function deficiency. In this study, we analyzed the rhizosphere fungi of ‘O’Neal,’ ‘Sharpblue,’ and ‘Premier’ blueberry cultivars and found that ‘Premier’ blueberries showed strong growth potential and relatively high root regulation ability. The dominant symbiotic fungus Sistotrema was correlated with the strong growth of ‘Premier’ and was directionally screened and isolated based on conserved gene structures and COG function analysis. This fungus was reinoculated onto the roots of ‘Gulfcoast’ and ‘Star’ blueberry cultivars. Sistotrema promoted the growth of blueberries and improved their ability to resist stress and grow under adverse conditions, as indicated by maintained or increased chlorophyll content under such conditions. Further analyses showed that Sistotrema has certain functional characteristics such as the ability to dissolve iron in its insoluble form and then release it, to fix nitrogen, and to inhibit nitrification in soil. Thus, it effectively doubled the soil nitrogen content and increased the soluble iron content in soil by 50%. This investigation indicates sistotrema inoculation as an approach to increase blueberry stress tolerance and complete their root nutrition deficiency.

BRANCHED1 (BRC1) is a crucial member of the TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PCF (TCP) gene family and is well known for playing a central role in shoot branching by controlling buds’ paradormancy. However, the expression characteristics and molecular regulatory mechanism of BRC1 during blueberry bud dormancy are unclear. To shed light on these topics, shoots of three blueberry cultivars with different chilling requirements (CRs) were decapitated in summer to induce paradormancy release and subjected to different levels of chilling in winter to induce endodormancy release. The results showed that the high-CR cultivar ‘Chandler’ had the strongest apical dominance among the three cultivars; additionally, the expression of VcTCP18, which is homologous to BRC1, was the highest under both the decapitation treatment and low-temperature treatment. The ‘Emerald’ cultivar, with a low CR, demonstrated the opposite trend. These findings suggest that VcTCP18 plays a negative regulatory role in bud break and that there may be a correlation between the CR and tree shape. Through yeast 1-hybrid (Y1H) assays, we finally screened 21 upstream regulatory genes, including eight transcription factors: zinc-finger homeodomain protein 1/4/5/9, MYB4, AP2-like ethylene-responsive transcription factor AINTEGUMENTA (ANT), ASIL2-like, and bHLH035. It was found that these upstream regulatory genes positively or negatively regulated the expression of VcTCP18 based on the transcriptome expression profile. In summary, this study enriched our understanding of the regulatory network of BRCl during bud dormancy and provided new insights into the function of BRC1.

Abstract Human brucellosis is caused by Brucella species and remains a major burden in both human and domesticated animal populations, especially in Inner Mongolia, China. The aims of this study were to analyze the spatiotemporal trends in human brucellosis in Inner Mongolia during 2010 to 2015, to explore the factors affecting the incidence of brucellosis. The results showed that the annual incidence was 29.68–77.67 per 100,000, and peaked from March to June. The majority of human brucellosis was male farmers and herdsmen, aged 40–59 years. The high-risk areas were mainly Xilin Gol League and Hulunbeier City. The incidence of human brucellosis in Inner Mongolia decreased during 2010 to 2015, although the middle and eastern regions were still high-risk areas. The regions with larger number of sheep and cattle, lower GDP per capita, less number of hospital beds, higher wind speed, lower mean temperature more likely to become high-risk areas of human brucellosis.

ObjectiveIn intensive care units (ICUs), carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) pose a significant threat. We aimed to examine the distribution, epidemiological characteristics, and risk factors for CRE positivity in ICUs.Materials and methodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted in 96 ICUs of 78 hospitals in Henan Province, China. The clinical and microbiological data were collected. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk factors for CRE positivity.ResultsA total of 1,009 patients were enrolled. There was a significant difference in CRE positive rate between pharyngeal and anal swabs (15.16 vs. 19.13%, P < 0.001). A total of 297 carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KPN), 22 carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CR-ECO), 6 carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae (CR-ECL), 19 CR-KPN/CR-ECO, and 2 CR-KPN/CR-ECL were detected. Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC), New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM), and a combination of KPC and NDM were detected in 150, 9, and 11 swab samples, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis determined length of ICU stay, chronic neurological disease, transfer from other hospitals, previous infection, and history of antibiotics exposure as independent risk factors for CRE positivity. Age and cardiovascular diseases were independent risk factors for mixed infections of CRE. The occurrence of CRE in secondary and tertiary hospitals was 15.06 and 25.62%, respectively (P < 0.05). Patients from tertiary hospitals had different clinical features compared with those from secondary hospitals, including longer hospital stays, a higher rate of patients transferred from other hospitals, receiving renal replacement therapy, exposure to immunosuppressive drugs, use of antibiotics, and a higher rate of the previous infection.ConclusionIn ICUs in Henan Province, CRE positive rate was very high, mostly KPC-type CR-KPN. Patients with prolonged ICU stay, chronic neurological disease, transfer from other hospitals, previous infection, and history of antibiotic exposure are prone to CRE. Age and cardiovascular diseases are susceptibility factors for mixed infections of CRE. The CRE positive rate in tertiary hospitals was higher than that in secondary hospitals, which may be related to the source of patients, antibiotic exposure, disease severity, and previous infection.

Abstract This paper investigates physical layer security analysis of cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication system. A virtual full-duplex (VFD) relaying scheme with an untrusted amplify-and-forward (AF) half-duplex (HD) relay and a trusted decode-and-forward (DF) HD relay is used in this system to improve the spectral efficiency. In order to prevent the untrusted relay from eavesdropping, a simple and practical cooperative jamming scheme is designed to confuse the untrusted relay. The exact expressions of effective secrecy throughput (EST) for NOMA users and approximate expression of EST for non-NOMA user are derived. All theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations which demonstrate that the proposed VFD-NOMA scheme is superior to existing HD-NOMA scheme in cooperative system and jamming plays an important role for obtaining acceptable EST. In addition, simulation results shows that the best secrecy performance highly depends on the system parameters such as transmit powers and jamming signal power.

Abstract Background Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) is characterized by the production of berries that are smaller than most common fruits, and the underlying mechanisms of fruit size in blueberry remain elusive. V. corymbosum ‘O’Neal’ and ‘Bluerain’ are commercial southern highbush blueberry cultivars with large- and small-size fruits, respectively, which mature ‘O’Neal’ fruits are 1 ~ 2-fold heavier than those of ‘Bluerain’. In this study, the ontogenetical patterns of ‘O’Neal’ and ‘Bluerain’ hypanthia and fruits were compared, and comparative transcriptomic analysis was performed during early fruit development. Results V. corymbosum ‘O’Neal’ and ‘Bluerain’ hypanthia and fruits exhibited intricate temporal and spatial cell proliferation and expansion patterns. Cell division before anthesis and cell expansion after fertilization were the major restricting factors, and outer mesocarp was the key tissue affecting fruit size variation among blueberry genotypes. Comparative transcriptomic and annotation analysis of differentially expressed genes revealed that the plant hormone signal transduction pathway was enriched, and that jasmonate-related TIFYs genes might be the key components orchestrating other phytohormones and influencing fruit size during early blueberry fruit development. Conclusions These results provided detailed ontogenetic evidence for determining blueberry fruit size, and revealed the important roles of phytohormone signal transductions involving in early fruit development. The TIFY genes could be useful as markers for large-size fruit selection in the current breeding programs of blueberry.

ABSTRACT The molecular-level interactions between phytoplankton-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) and heterotrophic prokaryotes represent a fundamental and yet poorly understood component of the marine elemental cycle. Here, we investigated the degradation of Synechococcus-derived organic matter (SynOM) by coastal microorganisms using spectroscopic and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry analyses coupled with high-throughput sequencing. The added SynOM showed a spectrum of reactivity during a 180-day dark incubation experiment. Along with the decrease in DOM bioavailability, the chemical properties of DOM molecules overall showed increases in oxidation state and aromaticity. Both the microbial community and DOM molecular compositions became more homogeneous toward the end of the incubation. The experiment was partitioned into three phases (I, II, and III) based on the total organic carbon consumption rates from 7.0 ± 1.0 to 1.0 ± 0.1 and to 0.1 ± 0.0 μmol C L−1 day−1, respectively. Diverse generalists with low abundance were present in all three phases of the experiment, while a few abundant specialists dominated specific phases, suggesting their diverse roles in the transformation of DOM molecules from labile and semilabile to recalcitrant. The changes of organic molecules belonging to CHO, CHNO, and CHOS containing formulas were closely associated with specific microbial populations, suggesting close interactions between the different bacterial metabolic potential for substrates and DOM molecular compositional characteristics. This study sheds light on the interactions between microbial population succession and DOM molecular changes processes and collectively advances our understanding of microbial processing of the marine elemental cycle. IMPORTANCE Phytoplankton are a major contributor of labile dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the upper ocean, fueling tremendous marine prokaryotic activity. Interactions between microorganisms and algae-derived DOM regulate biogeochemical cycles in the ocean, but key aspects of their interactions remain poorly understood. Under global warming and eutrophication scenarios, Synechococcus blooms are commonly observed in coastal seawaters, and they significantly influence the elemental biogeochemistry cycling in eutrophic ecosystems. To understand the interactions between Synechococcus-derived DOM and heterotrophic prokaryotes as well as their influence on the coastal environment, we investigated the degradation of DOM by coastal microbes during a 180-day dark incubation. We showed substantial DOM compositional changes that were closely linked to the developments of microbial specialists and generalists. Our study provides information on the interactions between microbial population succession and DOM molecular changes, thereby advancing our understanding of microbial processing of the marine DOM pool under the influence of climate change.

MADS-box is a class of transcriptional regulators that are ubiquitous in plants and plays important roles in the process of plant growth and development. Identification and analysis of blueberry MADS-box genes can lay a foundation for their function investigations. In the present study, 249 putative MADS-box genes were identified in the blueberry genome. Those MADS-box genes were distributed on 47 out of 48 chromosomes. The phylogenetic and evolutionary analyses showed that blueberry MADS-box genes were divided into 131 type I members and 118 type II members. The type I genes contained an average of 1.89 exons and the type II genes contained an average of 7.83 exons. Motif analysis identified 15 conserved motifs, of which 4 were related to the MADS domain and 3 were related to the K-box domain. A variety of cis-acting elements were found in the promoter region of the blueberry MADS-box gene, indicating that the MADS-box gene responded to various hormones and environmental alterations. A total of 243 collinear gene pairs were identified, most of which had a Ka/Ks value of less than 1. Nine genes belonging to SEP, AP3/PI, and AGL6 subfamilies were screened based on transcriptomic data. The expression patterns of those nine genes were also verified using quantitative PCR, suggesting that VcMADS6, VcMADS35, VcMADS44, VcMADS58, VcMADS125, VcMADS188, and VcMADS212 had potential functions in blueberry fruit ripening. The results of this study provide references for an in-depth understanding of the biological function of the blueberry MADS-box genes and the mechanism of blueberry fruit ripening.

The fast and accurate classification of surrounding rock mass is the basis for tunnel design and construction and has significant value in engineering applications. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for classifying and predicting surrounding rock mass based on particle swarm optimization (PSO)–least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). The premise of the research is that the data acquired from digital drilling technology are divided into a training group and a test group; the training group continuously optimizes the algorithm for the particle swarm optimization least squares support vector machine, and then the test group is used for verification. Moreover, the fast searching abilities of the particle swarm significantly accelerate the computational power and computational accuracy of the least squares support vector machine, making it a high-speed analog search tool. Taking the Jiaozhou Bay undersea tunnel in China as an example, a comparison of the evaluation results of PSO-LSSVM and QGA-RBF (quantum genetic algorithm-radical basis function neural network) is undertaken. The results show that PSO-LSSVM matches well with the field-measured surrounding rock grade. Applying the method in an engineering context proves that it has good self-learning abilities, even when the sample size is small and the prediction accuracy is high; as such, it meets the engineering requirements. The technique has the advantages of small sample prediction, pattern recognition, and nonlinear prediction.

Satellite observations have shown evident vegetation greening in China during the last two decades. The biophysical effects of vegetation changes on near-surface air temperature (SAT) remain elusive because prior studies focused on the effects on land surface temperature (LST). SAT is more relevant to climate mitigation and adaptation, as this temperature is experienced by humans. Here, we provide the first observational evidence of the greening effects on SAT and SAT extremes in China during 2001–2018 using the ‘space-for-time’ method. The results show a negative SAT sensitivity to greening (–0.35 °C m ^2 m ^–2 ) over China and a cooling effect of −0.08 °C on SAT driven by vegetation greening during the study period. Such a cooling effect is stronger on high SAT extremes, particularly over arid/semiarid areas, where greening could bring an additional cooling of −0.04 °C on the hottest days. An attribution analysis suggests that the main driving factor for the cooling effect of greening is the evapotranspiration change for arid/semiarid regions and the aerodynamic resistance change for humid regions. This study reveals a considerable climate benefit of greening on SAT, which is more concerned with natural and human system health than the greening effects on LST.

Extreme precipitation events have posed a threat to global terrestrial ecosystems in recent decades. However, the response of terrestrial ecosystems to extreme precipitation in areas with various vegetation types and complex topography remains unclear. Here, we used satellite-based solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, a direct proxy of photosynthetic activity, to assess the response of vegetation to the record-breaking extreme precipitation event during the East Asia monsoon season in eastern China in 2020. Our results demonstrate that vegetation was adaptable to moderate increases in precipitation, but photosynthetic activity was significantly inhibited by exposure to extreme precipitation because of insufficient photosynthetically active radiation and waterlogging. The responses of vegetation photosynthesis to extreme precipitation were regulated by both vegetation type and topography. Crops in the lowland areas in eastern China were severely damaged due to their higher vulnerability and exposure to extreme precipitation. The topography-induced redistribution of precipitation accounts for the modulation of vegetation response to extreme precipitation. Our research highlights the urgent need for effective management and adaptive measures of croplands under the elevated risk of extreme precipitation in the future.

Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is reputed as a rich source of health-promoting phytonutrients, which contributes to its burgeoning consumer demand and production. However, blueberries are much smaller and have lower yields than most domesticated berries, and the inherent regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, the cytological and physiological changes, as well as comparative transcriptomic analysis throughout flower and fruit development in the southern highbush blueberry cultivar ‘O’Neal’ were performed. ‘O’Neal’ hypanthium and fruit exhibited a distinctive cell proliferation pattern, and auxin accumulation was unusual throughout development, while abscisic acid (ABA) levels rapidly increased in association with anthocyanin accumulation, total phenolic reduction and fruit maturation. Transcriptomic data showed that many differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were specifically expressed at each flower bud and fruit developmental stage. Further weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed numerous DEGs that correlated with the cell numbers of outer mesocarp and columella, showed two distinctive expression patterns. Most of the DEGs involved in auxin biosynthesis, transportation and signal transduction were upregulated, and this upregulation was accompanied by cell expansion, and flower bud and fruit development. However, individual members of VcSAUR50 and VcIAA9 families might be insensitive to auxin, suggesting that these genes play a distinctive role in the growth and development of blueberry fruits. These results will support future research to better understand the flower and fruit development of southern highbush blueberry.

In order to study the seepage failure mechanism of roadway filling medium consisting of cohesive soil under complex hydrogeological conditions, a large-scale triaxial stress-seepage test system was utilized to investigate the influence of kaolin content and seepage loading rate on the seepage characteristics of filling medium. Through the analysis on the variation rules of sand loss and particle size distribution, the seepage characteristics and whole process of seepage instability of filling medium were explored in depth. It is concluded that (1) The seepage instability process of filling medium can be categorized into three stages: the initiation loss of fine clay, the accelerating loss of soil, and the stable status of soil loss. (2) The seepage failure process rate is proportional to the seepage loading rate and inversely proportional to the content of kaolin. (3) The kaolin and sand content of remaining mixture presented initial>bottom>middle>top status. The research results have guidance value for exploring the instability evolution mechanism of filling medium in deep roadway.

There are many issues affecting multi-hole parallel tunneling and long tunnel ventilation, such as insufficient fresh air supplied at the tunnel face, pollution by contaminated winds, and uncoordinated work among multiple fans. In view of these issues, this paper uses the numerical simulation software Fluent combined with the orthogonal analysis test method, and, based on the actual working conditions of Yuelongmen Tunnel on the Chenglan Line, simulates the parameters of the duct, the installation position of the jet fan at the cross channel, and the combined operation status of multiple fans. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) the primary factor affecting the CO discharge from the tunnel face is the distance between the exit of the duct and the tunnel face, and the secondary factor is the diameter of the duct, while the position of the duct is the least influential factor; (2) the jet fan at the intersection of the cross channel should be set close to the pollution source in such a way as to prevent the jet from hitting the windward side of the cross channel and thereby avoid causing the contaminated wind to contaminate the adjacent tunnel; (3) in tunnels in which blasting operations do not occur, the simultaneous use of high-power air supplies and jet fans will reduce the air pressure in the tunnel, generate an air pressure difference with the adjacent tunnel, trap polluted air, and reduce the ventilation effect.

Base-extracted particulate organic matter (BEPOM) collected in low (spring) and high (summer) runoff seasons in the Changjiang Estuary and adjacent nearshore/offshore shelf areas was examined using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) identified two humic-like (C1p and C2p) biologically-refractory components and two protein-like (C3p and C4p) bioreactive components. Absorption coefficient a350p, C1p and C2p of BEPOM showed strong positive correlations with particulate organic carbon (POC), and were generally higher in spring than in summer. C4p correlated positively with Chl a, and was higher in summer than in spring. In the inner estuary, an anthropogenic POM signal from the highly polluted Huangpu River was effectively identified by the fluorescent component ratio (IT:IC)P. In the nearshore area during spring, resuspension within the well-developed turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) supplied large amounts of refractory POM into the water column. POM fractions from an autochthonous source (i.e., algal bloom) were dominant in the offshore area during the summer. A multivariate regression model inferred that POM export fluxes from the Changjiang River during spring had a higher percentage of labile POM fractions, which were subsequently retained by the TMZ. However, these labile fractions were discharged into the offshore shelf area contributing to hypoxia in the summer. The summer high runoff season also transported large amounts of refractory POM that was subsequently buried in the sediment. This study highlights the utilization of optical analyses to trace pollution sources and reveal POM fate and transport dynamics allowing better assessment of its ecological consequences in estuaries.

Plant-specific TEOSINTE BRANCHED 1, CYCLOIDEA, PROLIFERATING CELL FACTORS (TCP) transcription factors have versatile functions in plant growth, development and response to environmental stress. Despite blueberry’s value as an important fruit crop, the TCP gene family has not been systematically studied in this plant. The current study identified blueberry TCP genes (VcTCPs) using genomic data from the tetraploid blueberry variety ‘Draper’; a total of 62 genes were obtained. Using multiple sequence alignment, conserved motif, and gene structure analyses, family members were divided into two subfamilies, of which class II was further divided into two subclasses, CIN and TB1. Synteny analysis showed that genome-wide or segment-based replication played an important role in the expansion of the blueberry TCP gene family. The expression patterns of VcTCP genes during fruit development, flower bud dormancy release, hormone treatment, and tissue-specific expression were analyzed using RNA-seq and qRT-PCR. The results showed that the TB1 subclass members exhibited a certain level of expression in the shoot, leaf, and bud; these genes were not expressed during fruit development, but transcript levels decreased uniformly during the release of flower bud dormancy by low-temperature accumulation. The further transgenic experiments showed the overexpression of VcTCP18 in Arabidopsis significantly decreased the seed germination rate in contrast to the wild type. The bud dormancy phenomena as late-flowering, fewer rosettes and main branches were also observed in transgenic plants. Overall, this study provides the first insight into the evolution, expression, and function of VcTCP genes, including the discovery that VcTCP18 negatively regulated bud dormancy release in blueberry. The results will deepen our understanding of the function of TCPs in plant growth and development.

Cross-pollination can improve the fruit set and quality of blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) for growers and consumers. However, the xenia effect in southern highbush blueberry remains unclear. Therefore, we selected eight cultivars of southern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L., interspecific hybrids) and applied pollination treatments (i.e., artificial self-pollination, artificial pollination with mixed pollen, or artificial pollination with individual cultivar pollen) to explore the xenia effects on the fruit set and quality of ‘O’Neal’ and ‘Emerald’. Pollen viability tests indicated that all of the cultivars are capable of fertilization. The highest fruit set came from ‘Bluerain’ pollen for ‘O’Neal’, while ‘Gulfcoast’ pollen increased fruit set the most in ‘Emerald’. Principal component analysis revealed that the cross combinations ‘Emerald’ × ‘Gulfcoast’ and ‘O’Neal’ × ‘Gulfcoast’ optimized the external and interior quality of the fruit. SSR was applied to determine which pollen source yielded the most seedlings. Results indicated that ‘Emerald’ × ‘Gulfcoast’ and ‘O’Neal’ × ‘Bluerain’ increased seedling production. Our results demonstrate that the xenia effects of ‘Gulfcoast’ pollen may increase ‘Emerald’ yields and promote fruit quality, while pollen from ‘Bluerain’ or ‘Jewel’ can improve ‘O’Neal’ fruit quality and seed number. Hence, these cross combinations may be utilized in blueberry production to increase fruit set, yield, and quality.

Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) is an important public health issue worldwide. However, evidence concerning the impact of environmental factors on TB is sparse. We performed a retrospective analysis to determine the spatiotemporal trends and geographic variations of, and the factors associated with, the TB prevalence in Inner Mongolia. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of the epidemiology of TB. A Bayesian spatiotemporal model was used to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution and trends of the TB prevalence. A spatial panel data model was used to identify factors associated with the TB prevalence in the 101 counties of Inner Mongolia, using county-level aggregated data collected by the Inner Mongolia Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Results From January 2010 to December 2014, 79,466 (6.36‱) incident TB cases were recorded. The TB prevalence ranged from 4.97‱ (12,515/25,167,547) in 2014 to 7.49‱ (18,406/ 24,578,678) in 2010; the majority of TB cases were in males, and in those aged 46–60 years; by occupation, farmers and herdsmen were the most frequently affected. The Bayesian spatiotemporal model showed that the overall TB prevalence decreased linearly from 2010 to 2014 and occupation-stratified analyses yielded similar results, corroborating the reliability of the findings. The decrease of TB prevalence in the central-western and eastern regions was more rapid than that in the overall TB prevalence. This paper investigates the throughput performance of an incremental virtual full-duplex non-orthogonal multiple access (I-VFD-NOMA) communication system, where two energy harvesting (EH) enabled near users are willing to forward message for far user using decode-and-forward (DF) protocol. If the direct link between the source and the far user exists, I-VFD-NOMA scheme is used to save the channel resources. If the direct link between the source and the far user does not exist, I-VFD-NOMA can not be used and only VFD-NOMA can be used. With this structure, The analytical expressions of the system throughput considering imperfect successive interference cancellation (I-SIC) and selection combining (SC) are derived when the direct link exists or not. With the aim of maximizing the throughput, the expression for the optimal power splitting factor at near users is also derived when the direct link does not exist. All theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations which demonstrate that the proposed I-VFD-NOMA scheme is superior to existing NOMA systems.

Abstract In this work, we study the cognitive decode-and-forward (DF) relaying, where a primary user (PU) communicates with an access point (AP), and in the same geographical region, a secondary source (SS) communicates to a secondary destination (SD) with assistance from a secondary relay (SR). Either SR or SD can decode the secondary data directly (DIR) or using the successive interference cancelation (SIC) technique. Based on the decoding methods of SR and SD, we proposed SR-DIR-SD-DIR, SR-DIR-SD-SIC, SR-SIC-SD-DIR, and SR-SIC-SD-SIC-based cognitive DF relaying schemes. The outage probabilities of both primary and secondary systems are analyzed for all the decoding manners. The transmit powers of SS and SR are further determined to minimize the outage probability of secondary system subject to the constraint that the outage performance loss of primary system should not exceed a certain percentage compared with the stand-alone primary network without spectrum sharing. Numerical results show that by using the SIC decoding, the outage probability of secondary system can be greatly decreased, especially when the interference from PU is strong or the transmission rate of primary data is low.

Endodormancy is the stage that perennial plants must go through to prepare for the next seasonal cycle, and it is also an adaptation that allows plants to survive harsh winters. Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) are known to have high nutritional and commercial value. To better understand the molecular mechanisms of bud dormancy release, the transcriptomes of flower buds from the southern highbush blueberry variety “O’Neal” were analyzed at seven time points of the endo- and ecodormancy release processes. Pairwise comparisons were conducted between adjacent time points; five kinds of phytohormone were identified via these processes. A total of 12,350 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained from six comparisons. Gene Ontology analysis indicated that these DEGs were significantly involved in metabolic processes and catalytic activity. KEGG pathway analysis showed that these DEGs were predominantly mapped to metabolic pathways and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in endodormancy release, but these DEGs were significantly enriched in RNA transport, plant hormone signal transduction, and circadian rhythm pathways in the process of ecodormancy release. The contents of abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) decreased in endo- and ecodormancy release, and the jasmonic acid (JA) level first decreased in endodormancy release and then increased in ecodormancy release. Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) of transcriptomic data associated with hormone contents generated 25 modules, 9 of which were significantly related to the change in hormone content. The results of this study have important reference value for elucidating the molecular mechanism of flower bud dormancy release.

Phytoplankton are major contributors to labile organic matter in the upper ocean. Diverse heterotrophic bacteria successively metabolize these labile compounds and drive elemental biogeochemical cycling. We investigated the bioavailability of Synechococcus-derived organic matter (SOM) by estuarine and coastal microbes during 180-day dark incubations. Variations in organic carbon, inorganic nutrients, fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), and total/active microbial communities were monitored. The entire incubations could be partitioned into three phases (labeled I, II, and III) based on the total organic carbon (TOC) consumption rates of 6.38–7.01, 0.53–0.64, and 0.10–0.13 μmol C L–1 day–1, respectively. This corresponded with accumulation processes of NH4+, NO2–, and NO3–, respectively. One tryptophan-like (C1) and three humic-like (C2, C3, and C4) FDOM components were identified. The intensity variation of C1 followed bacterial growth activities, and C2, C3, and C4 displayed labile, semi-labile, and refractory DOM characteristics, respectively. Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria dominated the quickly consumed process of SOM (phase I) coupled with a substantial amount of NH4+ generation. Thaumarchaeota became an abundant population with the highest activities in phase II, especially in the free-living size-fraction, and these organisms could perform chemoautotroph processes through the ammonia oxidation. Microbial populations frequently found in the dark ocean, even the deep sea, became abundant during phase III, in which Nitrospinae/Nitrospirae obtained energy through nitrite oxidation. Our results shed light on the transformation of different biological availability of organic carbon by coastal microorganisms which coupled with the regeneration of different form of inorganic nitrogen.

Introduction Currently, 40.7% of women in China are exposed daily to secondhand smoke (SHS); however, research on SHS exposure among women in Inner Mongolia is limited. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of SHS exposure, knowledge about the harms of smoking and SHS, and the association between sociodemographic factors and SHS exposure among never-smoking women in Inner Mongolia, Northern China. Methods This study was based on a survey of chronic disease and nutrition conducted among Chinese adults in Inner Mongolia during 2015, a cross-sectional study with multi-stage stratified cluster sampling. A total 2293 never-smoking women aged ≥18 years were included in the study. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect data of sociodemographic characteristics, SHS exposure, and related knowledge. Questionnaires were administered by trained investigators, and the reliability and validity of the questionnaires were high. We performed descriptive analysis and logistic regression. All analyses were performed by IBM SPSS Statistics version 19.0. Results Of the total, 69% of young women in Inner Mongolia in 2015 reported that they were exposed to SHS, the highest rate in comparison with older and middle-aged women. A total 49.90% of young women reported being exposed to SHS every day. Respondents had insufficient knowledge regarding smoking and SHS exposure. Compared with older never-smoking women, their young counterparts had a higher risk of SHS exposure, with an odds ratio of 2.143 (95% CI: 1.647–2.787). Education level and ethnicity were also significantly associated with SHS exposure. Conclusions This study showed that the highest rates of SHS exposure were among young never-smoking women in Inner Mongolia, and women with high education levels were less likely to be exposed to SHS. Improved public health information is needed that prioritizes SHS exposure among young women in Inner Mongolia. Health education regarding SHS exposure should be widely implemented throughout communities in this region.

Abstract Satellite solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) products from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME‐2) and Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO‐2) are used to investigate the responses of vegetation growth to the 2019 heat wave in Australia. Both satellite SIF data sets are more sensitive to water and heat stress than is the greenness‐based vegetation index (enhanced vegetation index). Moreover, the OCO‐2 SIF observations show a more significant reduction and earlier response to the heat stress than does GOME‐2 SIF, indicating that the two satellite SIF data sets differ in how they monitor the drought and heat wave event due to the different timing of observations. Eddy covariance measurements confirm the different responses of dryland vegetation to the 2019 heat wave at a subdaily time scale. The differences in the timing of the satellite SIF products can be used to assess different elements of the impact of heat and water stress on Australian dryland ecosystems.

Auxin response factors (ARFs) are a transcription factor family that regulates the expression of auxin phase-responsive genes. Here, we performed a genome-wide investigation of the tetraploid blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum cv. ‘Draper’) genome sequence. Physical and chemical properties, phylogenetic evolution, gene structure, conservative motifs, chromosome location, and cis-acting elements of blueberry ARF genes were comprehensively evaluated. A total of 70 blueberry ARF genes (VcARF) were found in its genome, which could be divided into six subfamilies. VcARF genes were unevenly distributed on 40 chromosomes and were observed to encode protein sequences ranging in length from 162 to 1117 amino acids. Their exon numbers range from 2 to 22. VcARF promoter regions contain multiple functional domains associated with light signaling, aerobic metabolism, plant hormones, stress, and cell cycle regulation. More family members of VcARF genes were discovered in blueberry than in previously studied plants, likely because of the occurrence of whole-genome duplication and/or tandem duplication. VcARF expression patterns were analyzed at different stages of fruit development, and VcARF3, VcARF4, VcARF14, VcARF37, and VcARF52 were observed to play important roles. VcARF3 and VcARF4 appeared to function as repressors, while VcARF14 acted as an essential factor in fruit firmness differences between firm and soft flesh cultivars.

Based on six cruises from March to September in 2016, we investigated monthly distributions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and ancillary water chemistry parameters in a mariculture area in the Northern Yellow Sea, where summertime hypoxia and seawater acidification were observed. The most severe oxygen depletion (hypoxia covered approximately one-third of the aquaculture area) and the largest pH decrease (8.07 ± 0.05 in surface layer vs. 7.66 ± 0.07 in bottom layer) were revealed in August. Concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the absorption properties of chromophoric DOM (CDOM) were used to characterize DOM. Results showed that DOM mainly originated from marine in situ processes. In March, a DOM pool with the lowest DOC concentration of 211 ± 23 μmol L−1 and nearly uniform optical characteristics were presented in the well-mixed water column. In August, however, DOC increased to 361 ± 29 μmol L−1 in the surface layer and 342 ± 25 μmol L−1 in the bottom layer. Two non-linear relationships between the absorption coefficient at 355 nm [aCDOM(355)] and the absorption spectral slope over 275–295 nm (S275−295) were revealed. According to modeling results, the non-linear relationships were mostly caused by the conservative mixing of a refractory CDOM pool with a freshly produced CDOM pool. Apparent oxygen utilization in August was positively related to DOC, but not to aCDOM(355) and S275−295, presumably due to multiple sources of CDOM in bottom waters. Both aCDOM(355) and S275−295 respond largely to decreasing pH; however, they would be less affected by ocean acidification since this process leads to a limited pH decline.

After spinal cord injury (SCI), astrocytes become hypertrophic and proliferative, forming a dense network of astroglial processes at the site of the lesion. This constitutes a physical and biochemical barrier to axonal regeneration. Mitochondrial fission regulates cell cycle progression; inhibiting the cell cycle of astrocytes can reduce expression levels of axon growth-inhibitory molecules as well as astroglial scar formation after SCI. We therefore investigated how an inhibitor of mitochondrial fission, Mdivi-1, would affect astrocyte proliferation, astroglial scar formation, and axonal regeneration following SCI in rats. Western blot and immunofluorescent double-labeling showed that Mdivi-1 markedly reduced the expression of the astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and a cell proliferation marker, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, in astrocytes 3 days after SCI. Moreover, Mdivi-1 decreased the expression of GFAP and neurocan, a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan. Notably, immunofluorescent labeling and Nissl staining showed that Mdivi-1 elevated the production of growth-associated protein-43 and increased neuronal survival at 4 weeks after SCI. Finally, hematoxylin-eosin staining and behavioral evaluation of motor function indicated that Mdivi-1 also reduced cavity formation and improved motor function 4 weeks after SCI. Our results confirm that Mdivi-1 promotes motor function after SCI, and indicate that inhibiting mitochondrial fission using Mdivi-1 can inhibit astrocyte activation and astroglial scar formation and contribute to axonal regeneration after SCI in rats.

This paper investigates energy harvesting based multiuser system with large-scale distributed antennas, where a large number of remote antenna units (RAUs) are evenly separated across multiple circles. An efficient wireless energy and information transmission protocol is proposed. To save the signaling and the radio frequency chains overheads, the RAU with the shortest distance towards a user equipment (UE) is employed for the downlink wireless energy transfer (WET). In the uplink phase, we analyze the probability of wireless information transmission (WIT) of UEs. Then, linear zero-forcing detection and minimum-mean-square error are used to separate the data information among all the UEs that satisfy the requirement of WIT. The asymptotic throughput for an arbitrary UE is derived in closed-form. The time fraction used for the WET is optimized through maximizing the asymptotic throughput. Numerical and simulation results are given to verify the theoretical analysis, and bring to light the time fraction planning and the RAUs deployment for the system.

Studies investigating possible associations between cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) polymorphisms and breast cancer risk have been inconsistent. We set out to ascertain whether there might be an association between polymorphisms in exon 2 (codon 119, G→T) and exon 3 (codon 432, G→C) of CYP1B1 and breast cancer in a Chinese Han population in the rural region of Ningxia. Using an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method and direct DNA sequencing, the presence or absence of the two CYP1B1 polymorphisms was investigated. Genotype and allele frequencies were analyzed in breast cancer cases (n = 152) and healthy age-matched controls (n = 156). The odds ratio (OR) of 119G→T or 432G→C in breast cancer cases and controls was 3.3 (95% CI: 1.28 to 8.28) and 2.8 (95% CI: 1.04 to 7.51), respectively. In addition, the OR for people with both polymorphisms (119T and 432C) was 4.69 (95% CI: 1.97 to 11.19). Our results suggest that certain polymorphisms in the CYP1B1 gene might increase risk for breast cancer among Han Chinese, perhaps because they influence the efficiency of CYP1B1 bio-transformation of oestrogens or pro-carcinogens into DNA- reactive electrophiles that may act as cancer-initiating agents.
