As global energy demand continues to rise and climate change accelerates, the need for sustainable and energy-efficient cooling solutions has reached a critical level. Conventional air conditioning systems heavily rely on energy-intensive mechanical cooling, which significantly contributes to both electricity demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Passive cooling strategies, particularly radiative cooling (RC) and evaporative cooling (EC), present an alternative approach by harnessing natural processes for temperature regulation. While standalone RC can be affected by weather conditions and EC relies on water availability, Radiative-coupled EC (REC) offers a versatile and sustainable cooling solution suitable for various applications. Here we summarize an overview of the theoretical foundations and mathematical models of REC, encompassing REC by bulk water (REC-BW), REC by perspiration (REC-P), and REC by sorbed water (REC-SW). Moreover, we explore a range of applications, spanning from industrial processes to personal thermal management, and examine the advantages and challenges associated with each REC approach. The significance of REC lies in its potential to revolutionize cooling technology, reduce energy consumption, and minimize the environmental impact. REC-BW can conserve water resources in industrial cooling processes, while REC-P offers innovative solutions for wearable electronics and textiles. REC-SW’s adaptability makes it suitable for food preservation and future potable cooling devices. By addressing the challenges posed by REC, including water consumption, textile design, and optimization of bilayer structures, we can unlock the transformative potential of REC and contribute to sustainable cooling technologies in a warming world.

Abstract Background Low levels of Free Triiodothyronine (FT3) are associated with poor survival in chronic kidney disease, and the aim of this study was to further assess the relationship between changes in FT3 levels and renal damage in patients with type 2 diabetes based on glomerular and tubular markers. Methods We retrospectively studied 452 type 2 diabetic patients, measured glomerular damage markers (UACR, eGFR) and tubular damage markers (NAG/Cr,β2-MG), analyzed the relationship between FT3 and renal damage by logistic regression models, and plotted restrictive cubic splines. Results 41.6% of subjects had diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and the prevalence of DKD decreased progressively with increasing FT3 levels in the third quartile. Spearman correlation analysis showed that FT3 was negatively associated with UACR, NAG/Cr and β2-MG, while eGFR was positively associated with FT3. Multifactorial analysis, after adjusting for relevant confounders, revealed that compared with the lowest quartile of FT3, the highest quartile reduced the risk of developing urinary albumin (OR = 0.499,95% CI:0.289–0.856), moderate to severe impairment of glomerular filtration rate (OR = 0.106,95% CI:0.032–0.354), renal tubular marker β2 -MG positive (OR = 0.516,95% CI:0.299 to 0.883) and the risk of DKD occurrence (OR = 0.450,95% CI:0.260 to 0.774). In the sample model, FT3 levels below 4.39 pmol/L were associated with an increased risk of glomerular tubule injury and DKD occurrence. Abstract Background Abdominal obesity is appreciated as a major player in insulin resistance and metabolically dysfunctional adipose tissue. Inappropriate extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling and functional alterations in human adipose stromal/stem cells (hASCs) have been linked with visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT) dysfunction in obesity. Understanding the interactions between hASCs and the native ECM environment in obese vWAT is required for the development of future therapeutic approaches for obesity-associated metabolic complications. Methods The phenotypes and transcriptome properties of hASCs from the vWAT of obese patients and lean donors were assessed. The hASC-derived matrix from vWAT of obese or lean patients was generated in vitro using a decellularized method. The topography and the major components of the hASC-derived matrix were determined. The effects of the obese hASC-derived matrix on cell senescence and mitochondrial function were further determined. Results We showed that hASCs derived from the vWAT of obese patients exhibited senescence and were accompanied by the increased production of ECM. The matrix secreted by obese hASCs formed a fibrillar suprastructure with an abundance of fibronectin, type I collagen, and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), which resembles the native matrix microenvironment of hASCs in vWAT derived from obese patients. Furthermore, the obese hASC-derived matrix promoted lean hASC ageing and induced mitochondrial dysfunction compared to the lean hASC-derived matrix. Blockade of TGF-β1 signalling using an anti-TGF-β1 neutralizing antibody alleviated the lean hASC senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the obese hASC-derived matrix. Conclusions Native ECM in obesity vWAT initiates hASC senescence through TGF-β1-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction. These data provide a key mechanism for understanding the importance of cell-ECM interactions in hASCs senescence in obesity.

The excessive extraction of river sand has led to significant ecological issues. Moreover, the environmental impact and resource demand of cement production have increasingly turned the spotlight on sea sand as a viable alternative due to its abundance and ease of extraction. Concurrently, alkali-activated binders, a novel type of low-carbon cementitious material, have gained attention for their low energy consumption, high durability, and effective chloride ion fixation capabilities. However, they are susceptible to carbonation. Introducing a controlled sea sand amount can raise the materials’ carbonation resistance, although carbonation may raise the concentration of free Cl− within the structure to levels that could risk the integrity of steel reinforcements by accelerating corrosion. In this context, the current study investigates sea sand alkali-activated slag (SSAS) concrete prepared with varying water–binder (W/B) ratios to evaluate its impact on flowability, mechanical strength, performances, and chloride ion distribution post-carbonation. The results demonstrate that the mechanical property of SSAS concrete diminishes as the water-to-binder ratio increases, with a more pronounced reduction observed. The depth of carbonation in mortar specimens also rises with the W/B ratio, whereas the compressive strength post-carbonation initially decreases before showing an increase as carbonation progresses. Furthermore, carbonation redistributes chloride ions in SSAS, leading to a peak Cl− concentration near the carbonation front. However, this peak amplitude does not show a clear correlation with changes in the W/B ratio. This study provides a theoretical foundation for employing sea sand and alkali-activated concrete.

This is a narrative review of the progress of research on the correlation between insulin resistance and infertility. Insulin resistance (IR) is not only involved in the development of various metabolic diseases, but also affects female reproductive function, and to some extent is closely related to female infertility. IR may increase the risk of female infertility by activating oxidative stress, interfering with energy metabolism, affecting oocyte development, embryo quality and endometrial tolerance, affecting hormone secretion and embryo implantation, as well as affecting assisted conception outcomes in infertile populations and reducing the success rate of assisted reproductive technology treatment in infertile populations. In addition, IR is closely associated with spontaneous abortion, gestational diabetes and other adverse pregnancies, and if not corrected in time, may increase the risk of obesity and metabolic diseases in the offspring in the long term. This article provides a review of the relationship between IR and infertility to provide new ideas for the treatment of infertility.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to systematically review zuranolone’s efficacy and safety in treating major depressive disorder (MDD).MethodsWe conducted electronic searches in databases like PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science to identify randomized controlled trials using zuranolone for severe depression from study inception to September 15, 2023. Two independent reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and assessed study quality. Our meta-analysis included four studies with 1,454 patients. The findings showed significant improvements with zuranolone across various measures: Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) scores indicated notable alleviation in depressive symptoms (WMD: −2.03; 95% CI: −2.42 to −1.65); the treatment group’s HAM-D score response rate was significantly higher than the control group’s at day 15 (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.92, P = 0.01). The meta-analysis also revealed higher remission rates for the treatment group compared to the control group at day 15 (OR: 1.68, 95% CI: 1.18 to 2.39, P = 0.03). Additionally, HAM-A scores on day 15 and MADRS scores on day 15 showed improvement, and HAM-D scores for 30 mg zuranolone on different treatment days exhibited improvement (WMD, −2.55; 95% CI, −3.24 to −1.58; P = 0.05). However, analyzing HAM-D scores on day 15 for various zuranolone doses revealed no significant differences. Importantly, zuranolone use was associated with an increased incidence of adverse reactions.ResultsOur meta-analysis included four studies with 1454 patients, showing significant improvements with zuranolone across various measures, including HAM-D scores, HAM-A scores, MADRS scores, and specific HAM-D scores for 30 mg zuranolone on different treatment days. However, no significant differences were found in HAM-D scores on day 15 for various doses of zuranolone.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that zuranolone is a promising, simple, and convenient treatment for patients with major depressive disorder, offering potential guidance for clinical practice.

ObjectiveThis study was designed to systematically review the efficacy and safety of repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with escitalopram in treating major depressive disorder (MDD).MethodsDatabases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP Journal, and China Biomedical Literature databases were electronically searched for randomized controlled trials of rTMS combined with escitalopram intervention for MDD treatment from the inception of these databases to 27 May 2023. Two reviewers independently screened the studies, extracted the data, and assessed the quality of the included studies. R 4.2.2 was then used for a meta-analysis.ResultsIn total, 19 articles involving 1,032 patients were included. The first locally acquired case in the Chinese mainland was reported on May 31, 2023, lagging behind other countries. In this study, we aimed to examine the early clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the earliest cases of Mpox in Beijing, China. Additionally, we investigated the sequence and transmission patterns of the Mpox virus (MPXV). We analyzed 37 reported cases of Mpox in Beijing from May 31, 2023 to June 21, 2023. The age range of the subjects was 24–51 years. Thirty-six cases (97.3%) were identified in men who have sex with men (MSM), and 19 cases (51.4%) tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus. Thirty-three cases were symptomatic, while four were asymptomatic. Skin lesions were observed in 32 cases (97.0%), fever in 26 (78.8%), and swollen lymph nodes in 17 (51.5%). Rash typically appeared in the genital or perianal area 1–3 days before fever onset, with a minimum incubation period of 2 days. For individuals with skin rashes, the skin lesion samples showed 100% positivity and low Ct values. There were high oropharyngeal swab (75.8%) and blood (84.6%) positivity rates. All MPXV strains belonged to the B.1.3 branch of the West African lineage. These strains carried 76–86 nucleotide substitutions compared with the reference human MPXV genome, and genetic diversity was observed. Our findings provide the first insights into the landscape of early transmission of Mpox in Beijing and help inform policy formulation in the Chinese mainland.

Monkeypox (mpox) is a zoonotic disease caused by the mpox virus (MPXV) that has been primarily limited to Central and West African nations since its discovery. The recent spread of the West African lineage of MPXV in historically unaffected countries has raised concerns for global public health. Despite a significant decrease in global mpox cases, there is still a risk of a global resurgence. This study reports the first local case of mpox caused by an imported case in the Chinese mainland. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnosed the two cases, and the viral genomes were obtained by next-generation sequencing. Genomic analysis revealed that the two strains shared an identical genome sequence and belonged to the B.1.3 branch of the West African lineage, which is the first local case of mpox caused by an imported case in the Chinese mainland, highlighting the potential threat of mpox in China and the immediate need for adequate surveillance measures.

Abstract Most motion deblurring methods require a large amount of paired training data, which is nearly unreachable in practice. To overcome the limitation, a domain translation network with contrastive constraint for unpaired motion image deblurring is proposed. First, a domain translation network with two streams, a sharp domain translation stream and a blurred domain translation stream, to handle unpaired sharp and blurred images from the real world is presented. Second, a contrastive constraint loss in the deep intermediate level for the two streams to promote the network to produce deblurring results close to the real sharp image is proposed. Third, distinct loss functions for the two streams to preserve the edge and texture detail of the deblurring image is designed. Extensive experiments on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed network achieves better visual performance than the current state‐of‐the‐art methods for unpaired motion image deblurring.

Abstract Background Noroviruses are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide. The geographical characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing and their influencing factors remain unknown. This study aimed to explore the spatial distributions, geographical characteristics, and influencing factors of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing, China. Methods Epidemiological data and specimens were collected through the AGE outbreak surveillance system in all 16 districts of Beijing. Data on spatial distribution, geographical characteristics, and influencing factors of norovirus outbreaks were analyzed using descriptive statistics methods. We measured spatial, geographical clustering of high- or low-value deviance from random distribution using Z-scores and P-values as statistical significance measures with Global Moran’s I statistics and Getis-Ord Gi in ArcGIS. Linear regression and correlation methods were used to explore influencing factors. Results Between September 2016 and August 2020, 1,193 norovirus outbreaks were laboratory-confirmed. The number of outbreaks varied seasonally, typically peaking in spring (March to May) or winter (October to December). Outbreaks primarily occurred around central districts at the town level, and spatial autocorrelation was evident in both the entire study period and in individual years. Hotspots of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing were primarily found in contiguous areas between three central districts (Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai) and four suburban districts (Changping, Daxing, Fangshan, Tongzhou). The average population numbers, mean number of all schools, and mean number of kindergartens and primary schools for towns in central districts and hotspot areas were higher than those in suburban districts and non-hotspot areas respectively. Additionally, population numbers and densities of kindergartens and primary schools were influencing factors at the town level. Conclusions Hotspots of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing were in contiguous areas between central and suburban districts with high populations, and high kindergarten and primary school densities were the likely driving forces. Outbreak surveillance needs to focus on contiguous areas between central and suburban districts with increased monitoring, medical resources, and health education.

Abstract Objective To identify the key drugs of Yangyin Fuzheng Jiedu prescription (YFJP) and investigate their therapeutic effects against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and the potential mechanism using network pharmacology. Methods The H22 tumor‐bearing mouse model was established. Thirty male BALB/c mice were divided randomly into five groups. The mice were orally treated with either disassembled prescriptions of YFJP or saline solution continuously for 14 days. The mice were weighed every 2 days during treatment and the appearance of tumors was observed by photographing. The tumor inhibition rate and the spleen and thymus indexes were calculated. Hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemical staining were performed to observe the histological changes and tumor‐infiltrating lymphocytes. Cell apoptosis was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase‐mediated dUTP nick‐end labeling staining. The proportion of CD8+ T cells and the expression of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD‐1), T cell immunoglobulin domain and mucin domain‐3 (Tim‐3), and T cell immunoreceptor with Ig and ITIM domains (TIGIT) were analyzed using flow cytometry. The production of serum cytokines was detected using the Milliplex® MAP mouse high sensitivity T cell panel kit. The active components of the key drugs and HCC‐related target proteins were obtained from the corresponding databases. The putative targets for HCC treatment were screened by target mapping, and potential active components were screened by constructing a component‐target network. The interactive targets of putative targets were obtained from the STRING database to construct the protein–protein interaction network. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway enrichment analyses were performed based on potential targets. The gene–gene inner and component‐target‐pathway networks were constructed and analyzed to screen the key targets. Western blotting was used to evaluate the protein expression of the key targets in the tumor‐bearing mouse model. The binding activity of the key targets and compounds was verified by molecular docking. Results Among the three disassembled prescriptions of YFJP, the Fuzheng prescription (FZP) showed significant antitumor effects and inhibited weight loss during the treatment of H22 tumor‐bearing mice. FZP increased the immune organ index and the levels of CD8+ and CD3+ T cells in the spleen and peripheral blood of H22 tumor‐bearing mice. FZP also reduced the expression of PD‐1, TIGIT, and TIM3 in CD8+ T cells and the production of IL‐10, IL‐4, IL‐6, and IL‐1β. Network pharmacology and experimental validation showed that the key targets of FZP in the treatment of HCC were PIK3CA, TP53, MAPK1, MAPK3, and EGFR. The therapeutic effect on HCC was evaluated based on HCC‐related signaling pathways, including the PIK3‐Akt signaling pathway, PD‐L1 expression, and PD‐1 checkpoint pathway in cancer. GO enrichment analysis indicated that FZP positively regulated the molecular functions of transferases and kinases on the cell surface through membrane raft, membrane microarea, and other cell components to inhibit cell death and programmed cell death. Conclusion FZP was found to be the key disassembled prescription of YFJP that exerted antitumor and immunoregulatory effects against HCC. FZP alleviated T cell exhaustion and improved the immunosuppressive microenvironment via HCC‐related targets, pathways, and biological processes.

Pedestrian tracking in surveillance videos is crucial and challenging for precise personnel management. Due to the limited coverage of a single video, the integration of multiple surveillance videos is necessary in practical applications. In the realm of pedestrian management using multiple surveillance videos, continuous pedestrian tracking is quite important. However, prevailing cross-video pedestrian matching methods mainly rely on the appearance features of pedestrians, resulting in low matching accuracy and poor tracking robustness. To address these shortcomings, this paper presents a cross-video pedestrian tracking algorithm, which introduces spatial information. The proposed algorithm introduces the coordinate features of pedestrians in different videos and a linear weighting strategy focusing on the overlapping view of the tracking process. The experimental results show that, compared to traditional methods, the method in this paper improves the success rate of target pedestrian matching and enhances the robustness of continuous pedestrian tracking. This study provides a viable reference for pedestrian tracking and crowd management in video applications.

Abstract Background GJB2 mutations are among the most important causes of deafness, and their prevalence varies greatly among different countries and ethnic groups. This study aimed to determine the pathogenic mutation spectrum of GJB2 in patients with nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) in Western Guangdong and to explore the pathogenic characteristics of the c.109G>A locus. Methods In total, 97 NSHL patients and 212 normal controls (NC) were included in this study. Genetic sequencing analyses were performed on GJB2. Results In the NSHL group, the main pathogenic mutations in GJB2 were as follows: c.109G>A, c.235delC, and c.299_300delAT with allele frequencies of 9.28%, 4.12%, and 2.06%, respectively. c.109G>A was the most frequently detected pathogenic mutation in this region. In the NC group, the allele frequency of c.109G>A among 30–50 years old subjects was markedly lower than that among 0–30 years old subjects (5.31% vs. 11.11%, p A was the most common GJB2 mutation with unique characteristics, such as clinical phenotypic heterogeneity and delayed onset. Therefore, the c.109G>A mutation should be considered as an essential marker for routine genetic assessment of deafness, which can also be beneficial for preventing deafness.

Abstract Background Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the main treatment for acute radiation sickness, especially after fatal radiation. The determination of HSCT for radiation patients is mainly based on radiation dose, hemogram and bone marrow injury severity. This study aims to explore a better biomarker of acute radiation injury from the perspective of systemic immune response. Methods C57BL/6J female mice were exposed to total body irradiation (TBI) and partial body irradiation (PBI). Changes in haptoglobin (Hp) level in plasma were shown at different doses and time points after the exposure and treatment with amifostine or bone marrow transplantation. Student’s t-test/two tailed test were used in two groups. To decide the Hp levels as a predictor of the radiation dose in TBI and PBI, multiple linear regression analysis were performed. The ability of biomarkers to identify two groups of different samples was determined by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Abstract Background Ginsenoside Rg3 (GRg3) is one of the main active ingredients in Chinese ginseng extract and has various biological effects, such as immune-enhancing, antitumour, antiangiogenic, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of GRg3 on gastric precancerous lesion (GPL) induced by N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and the potential mechanism of action. Methods The MNNG–ammonia composite modelling method was used to establish a rat model of GPL. Histopathological changes in the rat gastric mucosa were observed by pathological analysis using haematoxylin–eosin staining to assess the success rate of the composite modelling method. Alcian blue–periodic acid Schiff staining was used to observe intestinal metaplasia in the rat gastric mucosa. Apoptosis was detected in rat gastric mucosal cells by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labelling staining. The production level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined by the dihydroethidium fluorescent probe method, and that of TP53-induced glycolysis and apoptosis regulator (TIGAR) protein was determined by immunohistochemical staining and western blotting. The production levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and that of glutathione (GSH) was determined by microanalysis. Results GRg3 significantly alleviated the structural disorganization and cellular heteromorphism in the form of epithelial glands in the gastric mucosa of rats with GPL and retarded the progression of the disease. Overexpression of TIGAR and overproduction of NADP, GSH and G6PDH occurred in the gastric mucosal epithelium of rats with GPL, which in turn led to an increase in the ROS concentration. After treatment with GRg3, the expression of TIGAR and production of NADP, GSH G6PDH decreased, causing a further increase in the concentration of ROS in the gastric mucosal epithelium, which in turn induced apoptosis and played a role in inhibiting the abnormal proliferation and differentiation of gastric mucosal epithelial cells. Conclusion Grg3 can induce apoptosis and inhibit cell proliferation in MNNG-induced GPL rats. The mechanism may be related to down-regulating the expression levels of TIGAR and production levels of GSH, NADP and G6PD, and up-regulating the concentration of ROS.

Abstract Background Gut microbiota plays an important role in the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). We aimed to elucidate research trends in gut microbiota and AD in children, to provide evidence and insights to the clinical prevention and treatment of AD in children. Methods A scoping literature review on the studies of gut microbiota and AD were conducted. Two authors independently searched Pubmed et al. databases for studies focused on gut microbiota and AD in children up to January 15, 2022. The literatures were screened and analyzed by two reviewers. Results A total of 44 reports were finally included and analyzed. Current researches have indicated that abnormal human microecology is closely associated with AD, and the disturbance of intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the occurrence and development of AD. Probiotics can correct the microbiota disorder, have the functions of regulating immunity, antioxidant, and help to restore the microecological homeostasis. However, there is still a lack of high-quality research reports on the efficacy and safety of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of AD in children. Conclusions The changes of gut microbiota are essential to the development of AD in children, which may be an effective target for the prevention and treatment of AD. Future studies with larger sample size and rigorous design are needed to elucidate the effects and safety of probiotics in AD.

ObjectiveThe systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively evaluate acupuncture's efficacy and safety in treating dysphagia in Parkinson's disease (PD).MethodsWe searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science Journal Database (VIP), Wan-fang Database, and the China Biomedical Literature Service System (CBM) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of acupuncture alone or in combination with control treatment in improving dysphagia by October 2022. The degree of dysphagia was the primary outcome indicator, with secondary outcomes including serum albumin (ALB) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels, the incidence of pneumonia, and adverse events. Two investigators independently extracted information according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data synthesis was calculated by RevMan (V.5.4.1) software.ResultsThis study included ten randomized controlled trials with 724 patients. Most RCTs have a high or uncertain risk of bias due to the lack of a blinded design. Meta-analysis showed that acupuncture combined with control treatment was superior to control treatment alone in improving Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) scores (MD: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.16, 1.81; P < 0.00001) and reducing Standardized Swallowing Assessment (SSA) scores (MD: −3.08; 95% CI: −4.01, −2.15; P < 0.00001). Acupuncture combined with control therapy has a more significant benefit in improving the clinical efficiency of dysphagia in PD (RR: 1.40; 95%CI: 1.25, 1.58; P < 0.00001). Compared to the control group without acupuncture, acupuncture improved the nutritional status of patients and increased their serum ALB (MD: 3.38, 95%CI: 1.83, 4.92, P < 0.00001) and Hb levels (MD: 7.66; 95%CI: 5.57, 9.75; P < 0.00001). Three RCTs reported that the rate of pulmonary infections in the acupuncture group was lower than without acupuncture intervention (RR: 0.29, 95% CI: 0.14, 0.63; P = 0.001).ConclusionAcupuncture could be recommended as an adjunctive treatment for dysphagia in PD. ObjectivesTo investigate respiratory virus infections in diarrhea cases and identify the risk of respiratory virus transmission through feces.MethodsFecal specimens were collected from diarrhea cases in enteric disease clinics in Beijing, China, from 2019 to 2020. Cases that tested negative for norovirus, rotavirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, and enteric adenovirus were included in the study. Real-time RT-PCR was used to detect 16 groups of respiratory viruses, and the major viruses were genotyped. Viruses isolation and digestion of clinical specimens and nucleic acid by artificial gastric acid or artificial bile/pancreatic juice were used to evaluate the risk of respiratory virus transmission through feces.ResultsA total of 558 specimens were collected and 47 (8.42%) specimens were detected positive, 40 (13.33%, 40/300) in 2019, and 7 (2.71%, 7/258) in 2020, including 20 (3.58%) for human rhinovirus (HRV), 13 (2.32%) for Bocavirus (BoV), 6 (1.08%) for parainfluenza virus I (PIV), 4 (0.72%) for coronavirus (CoV) OC43, 3 (0.54%) for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) A, and 1 (0.18%) for both BoV and CoV OC43. Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and other viruses were not detected in this study. Eight genotypes were identified in the 13 HRV specimens. BoVs 1 and 2 were identified in nine BoV specimens. HRV infectious virions were successfully isolated from 2 clinical specimens and clinical specimens of HRV, RSV, PIV, and CoV could not be detected after 4 h of digestion and their nucleic acid could not be detected after 2 h of digestion by artificial gastric acid or artificial bile/pancreatic juice.ConclusionThere may be a risk of respiratory virus transmission from diarrhea cases, and interventions against SARS-COV-2 epidemics are also effective for other respiratory viruses.

Objective: To compare the risk of osteoporotic fractures between the urban and urban-rural fringe populations in southern China and to explore the effect of bone turnover markers on fracture risk.Methods: Epidemiological investigations were conducted in the urban and urban-rural fringe areas of southern China in June 2018. Residents aged 40 years and over who signed informed consent forms were included. Physical examination and questionnaire collection were completed. Bone turnover markers (BTMs) including osteocalcin (OC) and beta cross-linked C-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX) were tested. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae 1–4 were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) values were calculated to show the probability of major osteoporotic fracture (PMOF) and probability of hip fracture (PHF) over the next 10 years.Results: A total of 1,051 participants were included in this study, including 553 in the urban areas and 498 in the urban-rural fringe areas. The average PMOF and PHF were 3.4 (2.3–5.4) % and .6 (.3–1.5) %, respectively. Compared with that in the urban populations, the femoral neck BMD in the urban-rural fringe populations was lower and FRAX values were generally higher, especially for women. FRAX values in various populations were mainly negatively correlated with lumbar and femoral neck BMD and were positively correlated with β-CTX; meanwhile, only PHF was negatively correlated with OC. After adjusting for sex, elevated β-CTX levels significantly increased the risk of high PMOF in various populations and increased the risk of high PHF in the urban-rural fringe populations. In particular, the risks of increased PMOF and PHF could increase by as much as 33 times and 19.5 times, respectively, in the urban-rural fringe areas.Conclusion: The urban-rural fringe populations in Southern China may be at risk of osteoporotic fracture. In addition to being related to BMD, the FRAX value also correlates with some BTMs. Combining FRAX with BMD, and BTMs may better predict the fracture risk.

Herein, we showed that the lower expression of α5 integrin in hepatocytes in patients with liver cirrhosis is associated with matrix deposition in the space of Disse. Selective silencing of α5 integrin in hepatocytes compromised the ultrastructure of tight junctions by downregulating claudin 1 in an SRC (proto-oncogene, non-receptor tyrosine kinase) signaling-dependent manner. α5 integrin signaling induced SRC-TET-mediated changes in 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and 5-methylcytosine levels in hepatocytes in vitro and in vivo. hMeDIP sequencing showed intergenic hypohydroxymethylation of the claudin 1 gene in hepatocytes after α5 integrin silencing in mice. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms regulating hepatic tight junction integrity in which α5 integrin-SRC signaling and epigenetic modifications cooperate might help advance the development of useful diagnostics and therapeutic approaches for liver disease.

Abstract Background Insomnia is very common in current society, and patients are often accompanied by a certain degree of anxiety, depression, etc. Recent studies have found that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis excitement-inhibition state is an important indicator of sleep quality. Wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) is safe and effective for insomnia. Based on WAA theory, the acupressure wrist-ankle straps are portable WAA point compression straps that can treat diseases by automatically applying pressure to the treatment location and being operated by patients themselves. We design this trial to evaluate the clinical effect of the acupressure wrist-ankle strap in the treatment of mild insomnia patients with anxiety disorders. Methods/design This trial is a parallel-design, patients-assessor blinded, randomized, sham-controlled. In total, 114 patients diagnosed with mild insomnia and anxiety disorders will be randomly assigned into two groups, the acupressure wrist-ankle strap group or the non-acupressure wrist-ankle strap group; they will receive treatments for eight weeks with five sessions each week. Rating scales, sleep monitors, and laboratory tests will be used to observe the clinical effect. From the perspective of the circadian secretion of peripheral blood-related hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the possible mechanism of acupressure wrist-ankle straps for treating insomnia is studied. Discussion The results of this study will confirm the efficacy of acupressure wrist-ankle strap in treating mild insomnia patients with anxiety disorder and whether its mechanism is related to the HPA axis. The acupressure wrist-ankle strap may become a pure physical, no side effect treatment of mild insomnia. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2000039352 . Abstract The Tarim River Basin in Xinjiang, China, has a typical desert riparian forest ecosystem. Analysis of the resilience of this type of ecosystem under extreme drought conditions and ecological rehabilitation projects could provide a theoretical basis for understanding ecosystem stability and resistance, and provide new ecological rehabilitation measures to improve ecosystem resilience. We employed a quantitative framework to assess net primary productivity (NPP) resilience, emphasizing four aspects of NPP dynamics: NPP, NPP stability, NPP resistance, and maximum NPP potential. We compared ecosystem resilience across four time periods: before the implementation of ecological rehabilitation projects (1990–2000), during construction and partial implementation of ecological rehabilitation projects (2001–2012), during the initial project stage of ecological rehabilitation (2013–2015), and during the late project stage of ecological rehabilitation (2016–2018). There are three main finding of this research. (1) Mean NPP was increased significantly from 2013 and was decreased from 2016, especially in the main stream of the Tarim River and in the basins of eight of its nine tributary rivers. (2) Ecosystem resilience in 2013–2018 was greater than in 1990–2012, with the greatest NPP stability, mean NPP and NPP resistance, especially in part one of the river basin (the Aksu River, the Weigan-Kuche River, the Dina River, the Kaidu-Konqi River, and the main stream of the Tarim River). Ecosystem resilience in 2001–2012 was lowest when compared to 1990–2000 and 2013–2018, with lowest mean NPP, NPP stability, NPP resistance and maximum NPP potential, particularly in part two of the river basin (the Kashigr River, the Yarkand River and the Hotan River basins). Therefore, part one was most affected by ecological restoration projects. When 2013–2018 was divided into two distinct stages, 2013–2015 and 2016–2018, resilience in the latter stage was the lowest, with lowest mean NPP, NPP resistance and maximum NPP potential, especially in the main stream of the Tarim River. This may be due to unreasonable water conveyance in 2014–2015. (3) Ecological resilience has increased significantly in 2013–2015 after the implementation of ecological water transfer projects, river regulation, and natural vegetation enclosure projects. Ecosystem resilience could continue to increase even more in the future with the continued implementation of reasonable ecological water transfer projects.

Background: Pancreatic injury (pancreatitis, amylase/lipase elevation) is a rare adverse event of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). With the high number of clinical studies on ICIs, the incidence and characteristics of associated pancreatic injury (PI) need to be reevaluated.Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the incidence of PI in cancer patients who received ICIs in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). PubMed, Embase, the ASCO, ESMO, and AACR conference proceedings before 1 April 2022, were investigated for relevant research.Results: 50 RCTs involving 35,223 patients were included. The incidence of ICIs-PI was 2.22% (95% CI = 1.94%–2.53%). The incidence of PI was 3.76% (95% CI = 1.84–7.67%) when combining two ICIs, which was higher than single ICIs [2.25% (95% CI = 1.91–2.65%)]. The ICIs were ranked from high to low based on PI incidence: PD-L1 inhibitors 3.01% (95% CI = 1.86–4.87%), CTLA-4 inhibitors 2.92% (95% CI = 0.99–8.65%) and PD-1 Inhibitor 2% (95% CI = 1.67–2.39%). The ICI with the highest rate of PI was pembrolizumab 7.23.% (95% CI = 1.69–30.89%). In addition, the incidence of severe ICIs-PI was 2.08% (95% CI = 1.76–2.46%); and the incidence of severe PI was 2.32% (95% CI = 1.76–3.06%) when combining two ICIs, which was higher than single ICI [1.95% (95% CI = 1.58–2.41%)]. The ICIs were ranked from high to low according to the incidence of severe PI: PD-L1 inhibitors 3.1% (95% CI = 1.7–5.64%), CTLA-4 inhibitors 2.69% (95% CI = 0.76–9.49%), PD-1 inhibitors 1.80% (95% CI = 1.41–2.29%).Conclusion: Treatment with multiple ICIs result in a higher incidence of PI compared to single ICIs, irrespective of the grade of pancreatic injury. The incidence of PI caused by PD-L1 inhibitors is higher than that of CTLA-4 inhibitors and PD-1 Inhibitor, and Pembrolizumab has the highest rate of ICIs-PI. Although the incidence of ICIs-PI is not high, they are usually severe (≥ grade 3 events).

Abstract Smart windows can selectively regulate excess solar radiation to reduce heating and cooling energy consumption in the built environment. However, the inevitable dissipation of ultraviolet and near‐infrared into waste heat results in inefficient solar utilization. Herein, a dual‐band selective solar harvesting (SSH) window is developed to realize full‐spectrum utilization. A transparent photovoltaic, converting ultraviolet into electricity, and a transparent solar absorber, converting near‐infrared into thermal energy, are integrated and coupled with a ventilation system to extract heat for indoor use. Compared with common transparent photovoltaics, the SSH window increases solar harvesting efficiency up to threefold while maintaining a considerable visible transmittance. Simulations suggest that the SSH window, besides generating electricity, delivers energy savings by over 30% higher than common smart windows. This is the first integration of transparent photovoltaic and transparent solar absorber into a window, which may open up a new avenue for the development of energy‐efficient buildings.

Abstract Analysis of eco-environmental water requirements along a dry inland river under extreme drought conditions can provide a theoretical basis for the sustained utilization and management of water resources in arid regions. This paper uses the Yarkand River Basin in Xinjiang, China, as a case study to determine and assess a method to calculate targeted eco-environmental water requirements (TEEWR) for different ranges of ecological protection of inland riparian forests. The proposed method is intended to comprehensively analyze the water resources along arid inland rivers. Specifically, the ranges of ecological protection were gradually expanded at intervals of 1 km (or multiples of the smallest distance) away from the river course while the TEEWR was determined as a function of the ecological water demand of riparian forest vegetation (Y ec) and its corresponding river loss (X loss). The developed method was shown to be feasible for analyzing TEEWR in the Yarkand River Basin and thus provides a novel and effective approach for the rational utilization and management of water resources in inland river basins in arid regions. Background Current dosimeters cannot cope with the two tasks of medical rescue in the early stage of nuclear accident, the accurate determination of radiation exposure and the identification of patients with fatal radiation injury. As radiation can cause alterations in serum components, it is feasible to develop biomarkers for radiation injury from serum. This study aims to investigate whether serum BPIFA2 could be used as a potential biomarker of predicting fatal radiation injury in the early stage after nuclear accident. Methods A rabbit anti-mouse BPIFA2 polyclonal antibody was prepared to detect the expression of BPIFA2. C57BL/6J female mice were exposed to total body radiation (TBI) at different dose and Partial body radiation (PBI) at lethal dose to detect the dynamic changes of BPIFA2 in serum at different time points after irradiation by Western blot assay. Results BPIFA2 in mice serum were significantly increased at 1–12 h post-irradiation at .5–10 Gy, and increased again significantly at 3 d after 10 Gy irradiation with associated with mortality closely. It also increased rapidly after PBI and was closely related to injury degree, regardless whether the salivary glands were irradiated. Conclusions The increase of serum BPIFA2 is a novel early biomarker not only for identifying radiation exposure, but also for fatal radiation injury playing a vital role in rational use of medical resources, and greater efficiency of medical treatment to minimize casualties.

Objective: To determine the effect of gut microbiota on a rat model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and explore the correlation of gut microbiota with behavior and neurotransmitters. Methods: We established a single prolonged stress (SPS) model to examine the pathogenesis of PTSD on rat behavior, gut microbiota, and neurotransmitter levels. Rats were separated into control and model groups, and neurotransmitter levels were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Maslinic acid (MA) is a pentacyclic triterpene acid, which exists in many plants, including olive, and is highly safe for human beings. In recent years, it has been reported that MA has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, neuroprotective and other biological activities. More and more experimental data has shown that MA has a good therapeutic effect on multiple organ diseases, indicating that it has great clinical application potential. In this paper, the extraction, purification, identification and analysis, biological activity, pharmacokinetics in vivo and molecular mechanism of MA in treating various organ diseases are reviewed. It is hoped to provide a new idea for MA to treat various organ diseases.

The accurate measurement of CO2 emissions is helpful for realizing the goals of “carbon neutralization” and “carbon peak”. However, most current research on CO2 emission measurements utilizes the traditional energy balance coefficient and top-down methods. The data granularity is large, and most studies are concentrated at the national, provincial, municipal, or district/county administrative unit scale. As an important part of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area of China, the Pearl River Delta region has good nighttime light vitality and faces huge carbon emission pressure. Using the Pearl River Delta as the research area, this study constructed an optimized pixel-scale regression model based on NPP-VIIRS (The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite on the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership spacecraft) nighttime light data and CO2 emissions data at the district and county levels for 2017. In addition, the spatial pattern of CO2 emissions in the Pearl River Delta was analyzed based on the predicted CO2 emission status. The results showed that the spatial pattern of CO2 emissions in the Pearl River Delta had the distinct characteristics of the “center-edge” effect, the spatial spillover effect, and high-value aggregation, which should be considered when making related social or public decisions.

Abstract Background Yangyin Fuzheng Jiedu Prescription (YFJP) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) indicated for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Its potential targets and molecular mechanisms are not clear. Therefore, this study intends to explore the molecular mechanism of YFJP based on network pharmacology analysis and in vitro validation. Methods and results Through univariate and multivariate analyses and survival analysis in HCC patients with or without YFJP treatment we found that drinking alcohol, alfafeto protein ≥ 400 ng/l, baseline portal vein tumor thrombus and total bilirubin level ≥ 18.8 μM) were independent risk factors for poor prognosis, while red blood cell count ≥ 4 × 109/l and TCM treatment were independent protective factors. Besides, YFJP prolonged the cumulative survival of HCC patients. Using online pharmacological methods, we obtained 58 relevant compounds and molecular 53 targets. By using scratch test, Transwell assay, EdU assay, and TUNEL staining, we found that YFJP-containing serum repressed the migration, invasion and proliferation of HCC cells in vitro, and induced cell apoptosis. Moreover, YFJP diminished the gene expression of TP53, CCND1, p-EGFR, EGF, VEGFA, JUN, IL6, COX-2, AKT1, and MAPK1 in HCC cells, but elevated the expression of ESR1 and CASP3. Conclusions Taken together, results showed that YFJP attenuated HCC progression through mediating effects on HCC-related genes.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is mainly caused by joint inflammation. RA significantly increases the probability of cardiovascular disease. Although the progress of RA has been well controlled recently, the mortality of patients with RA complicated with cardiovascular disease is 1.5–3 times higher than that of patients with RA alone. The number of people with atherosclerosis in patients with RA is much higher than that in the general population, and atherosclerotic lesions develop more rapidly in patients with RA, which has become one of the primary factors resulting in the death of patients with RA. The rapid development of atherosclerosis in RA is induced by inflammation-related factors. Recent studies have reported that the expression of IL-17 is significantly upregulated in patients with RA and atherosclerosis. Simultaneously, there is evidence that IL-17 can regulate the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells through various ways and promote the secretion of several cytokines leading to the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. Presently, there is no clear prevention or treatment plan for atherosclerosis in patients with RA. Therefore, this paper explores the mechanism of IL-17 in RA complicated with atherosclerosis and shows the reasons for the high incidence of atherosclerosis in patients with RA. It is hoped that the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis in patients with RA can be diagnosed or prevented in time in the early stage of lesions, and the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular complications in patients with RA can be enhanced to reduce mortality.

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) has emerged as the second major disease responsible for dementia, and there is still a lack of effective treatment methods for this disorder to date. In this study, an ensemble of fine‐tuned convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed. As CNN training requires large annotated data, which are lacking in the field of urine sediment microscopic image processing, the authors first pre‐trained the CNNs, including ResNet50 and GoogLeNet, and developed AlexNet on an ImageNet dataset. Thereafter, some of the weights of the pre‐trained CNNs were transferred to the urine sediment microscopic image dataset. To guide fine‐tuning of the learning rate and cascading features, the hierarchical nature of features in different convolutional layers was investigated by visualising the CNN. Then, they combined three CNNs as an ensemble of CNNs to decrease the differences and impurity interference among features of urine sediment microscopic image. These fusion features were employed to train the fully connected neural network for classification. In this study, they improved the accuracy of each CNN by an average of 2.2% through fine‐tuning of the learning rate and cascading features. Moreover, the better experimental results were achieved compared with other state‐of‐the‐art methods and indicated that a 97% classification accuracy can be attained.

The tooth-marked tongue refers to the tongue with the edge featured in jagged teeth marks, which is a significant indicator for reflecting the conditions of patients' internal organs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). From the perspective of computer vision, due to the small variance in the global region (original image) but the large variance in the local region (tongue region), especially in the differential region (tongue edge region around landmarks), the recognition of the tooth-marked tongue is a naturally fine-grained classification task. To address this challenging task, a two-stage method based on tongue region detection and tongue landmark detection via deep learning is proposed in this paper. In the first stage, we introduce a cascaded convolutional neural network to detect the tongue region and tongue landmarks simultaneously for minimizing the redundancy information and maximizing discriminative information explicitly. In the second stage, we send not only the detected tongue region but also the detected tongue landmarks to a fine-grained classification network for the final recognition. Conclusively, our method is highly consistent with human perception. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first attempt to manage the tooth-marked tongue recognition via deep learning. We conducted extensive experiments with the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) has generated a large amount of spatiotemporal data. Using a knowledge graph can help to analyze the transmission relationship between cases and locate the transmission path of the pandemic, but researchers have paid little attention to the spatial relationships between geographical entities related to the pandemic. Therefore, we propose a method for constructing a pandemic situation knowledge graph of COVID-19 that considers spatial relationships. First, we created an ontology design of the pandemic data in which spatial relationships are considered. We then constructed a non-spatial relationships extraction model based on BERT and a spatial relationships extraction model based on spatial analysis theory. Second, taking the pandemic and geographic data of Guangzhou as an example, we modeled a pandemic corpus. We extracted entities and relationships based on this model, and we constructed a pandemic situation knowledge graph that considers spatial relationships. Finally, we verified the feasibility of using this method as a visualization exploratory tool in the analysis of spatial characteristics, pandemic development situation, case sources, and case relationships analysis of pandemic-related areas.

Affected by the spatial environment, the accuracy and stability of ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning in a narrow space are significantly lower than those in the general indoor environment, which limits navigation and positioning services in a complex scene. To improve the positioning accuracy and stability of a narrow space, this study proposed a positioning algorithm by combining Kalman filter (KF) and dilution of precision (DOP). Firstly, we calculated the DOP values of the target narrow space by changing the location of the test nodes throughout the space. Secondly, the initial coordinate values of the test nodes were calculated by the weighted least squares (WLS) positioning algorithm and were used as the observation values of KF. Finally, the DOP values were adaptively introduced into KF to update the coordinates of the nodes to be tested. The proposed algorithm was tested in two narrow scenes with different length–width ratios. The experimental results showed that the DOP values of the narrow space were much higher than that of the wide space. Furthermore, even if the ranging error was low, the positioning error was high in the narrow space. The proposed fusion positioning algorithm reported a higher positioning accuracy in the narrow space, and the higher DOP values of the scene, the greater the accuracy improvement of the algorithm. This study reveals that no matter how the base stations are configured, the DOP values of the narrow space are much higher than that of the wide space, thus causing larger positioning errors. The proposed positioning algorithm can effectively suppress the positioning error caused by the narrow spatial structure, so as to improve the positioning accuracy and stability.

In alpine areas in Northwest China, such as the Tianshan Mountains, the lack of climate data (because of scarce meteorological stations) makes it difficult to assess the impact of climate change on runoff. The main contribution of this study was to develop an integrated method to assess the impact of climate change on runoff in data-scarce high mountains. Based on reanalysis products, this study firstly downscaled climate data using machine learning algorithms, then developed a Batch Gradient Descent Linear Regression to calculate the contributions of temperature and precipitation to runoff. Applying this method to six mountainous basins originating from the Tianshan Mountains, we found that climate changes in high mountains are more significant than in lowlands. In high mountains, the runoff changes are mainly affected by temperature, whereas in lowlands, precipitation contributes more than temperature to runoff. The contributions of precipitation and temperature to runoff changes were 20% and 80%, respectively, in the Kumarik River. The insights gained in this study can guide other studies on climate and hydrology in high mountain basins.

Changes in the resistance, recovery, and resilience of three desert riparian ecosystems to extreme droughts and the influence of ecological characteristics on them from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed within the Tarim River Basin, Xinjiang, China. The results showed that: (1) The resistance of the Populus euphratica forest community was the highest among the three plant communities. The recovery and resilience of the shrub community were the highest; (2) the resilience increased the most for the shrub community and decreased slightly for the Populus euphratica forest and herb communities as hydrological droughts waned; (3) the relative height and density significantly increased for Populus euphratica, decreased for herbs, and did not change for shrubs from 2000 to 2020; (4) the diversity indexes did not significantly change for the Populus euphratica forest and herb communities, and they increased for the shrub community from 2000 to 2020; (5) the resistance and resilience of the Populus euphratica forest, shrub, and herb communities were significantly affected by ecological characteristics, especially the Margalef richness index; and (6) the shrub community is more likely to rapidly recover (that is an increase of cover, height, and density) from future droughts in the Tarim River Basin, particularly with the implementation of new and more effective ecological restoration projects.

Background: From the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution theory perspective, the phlegm-dampness constitution is thought to be closely related to the occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, this viewpoint still lacks rigorous statistical evidence. This study aimed to test the association between the phlegm-dampness constitution and NAFLD.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study. Participants were residents living in Chengdu, China, undergoing health checkups at the health management center of Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine between December 2018 and September 2020. TCM constitution type was diagnosed by DAOSH four examinations instrument, NAFLD was diagnosed according to the liver ultrasonography and medical history. Multivariate logistic regression and propensity score matching (PSM) were used to analyze a total of 1,677 qualified data.Results: 1,037 participants had biased constitution(s), 67.8% of which had mixed constitutions (with at least two constitutions). Among 1,677 participants, the phlegm-dampness constitution was associated with the yang-deficiency, yin-deficiency, dampness-heat, qi-depression, and blood-stasis constitutions. The correlation coefficients were 0.11, 0.32, 0.42, 0.20, 0.14, respectively. Between the phlegm-dampness constitution and NAFLD, the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) was 2.05 (1.57–2.69) in the crude model. After adjusting for age, gender, Body mass index (BMI), other biased constitutions, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, the OR reduced to 1.51 (1.04–2.18). The associations of seven other biased TCM constitutions and NAFLD were not statistically significant in the fully adjusted model. The PSM analysis showed consistent results with the logistic regression.Conclusions: Among eight biased TCM constitutions, the phlegm-dampness constitution is independently associated with NAFLD. We speculate the phlegm-dampness constitution is a risk factor of NAFLD. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm this causal relationship in the future. In addition, inconsistent with some TCM practitioners' experience, we disagree that the blood-stasis constitution is associated with NAFLD.

Summary: Obesity is an important risk factor and a potential treatment target for hepatic steatosis. The maladaptation of hepatic mitochondrial flexibility plays a key role in the hepatic steatosis. Herein, we found that hepatocyte-like cells derived from human adipose stem cell of obese patients exhibited the characteristics of hepatic steatosis and accompanied with lower expression of the subunits of mitochondrial complex I and lower oxidative phosphorylation levels. The GSK3 inhibitor CHIR-99021 promoted the expression of NDUFB8, NDUFB9, the subunits of mitochondrial complex I, the basal oxygen consumption rate, and the fatty acid oxidation of the hepatocytes of obese patients by upregulating the expression of the transcription factor PGC-1α, TFAM, and NRF1 involved in mitochondrial biogenesis. Moreover, CHIR-99021 decreased the lipid droplets size and the triglyceride levels in hepatocytes of obese patients. The results demonstrate that GSK3 inhibition ameliorates hepatic steatosis by elevating the mitochondrial function in hepatocytes of obese patients.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) ranks the most lethal skin cancer worldwide. However, other risk factors have been hardly explored, aside from ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were implied to be potential risk factors for CMM, although all the evidence was obtained from the western countries. This study examined the relationships between plasma levels of PCBs and CMM risk adjusting for sun sensitivity and sun exposure in a Chinese population, using a case-control study, including 450 CMM cases and 500 healthy controls. Plasma levels of a total of 33 PCB congeners were assayed in both cases and controls. Our results showed that there was a significant association between total summed PCB level and CMM risk, with a 1.44-fold increased risk for those in the highest quartile compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.02–2.03, P for trend = 0.031). Significantly increased ORs were also observed for individual PCB congeners (PCB52, PCB170 and PCB180). These associations persisted after control for sun sensitivity and sun exposure. Our study represents the first evidence conducted in Asians, and does support the hypothesis that PCB exposure increases CMM risk. Objective: To illustrate the effect of geniposide (GP) and panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) on estrogen receptors (ER) including ERα and ERβ within the cytoplasm and nucleus of SH-SY5Y cells. Methods: Immunofluorescence was used to observe the distribution of ERα and ERβ in cytoplasm and nucleus, but Western blot was only for ERβ detection. q-PCR was applied to detect NR3C1, S100A6 and LGALS1downstream mRNA gene expression levels of ER. Results: Through analyzing fluorescence intensity under the administration of GP and PNS in SH-SY5Y cells, we found that the distribution of ERα has not been affected. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is effective in preventing and treating all manner of diseases, which has been incorporated into the latest global medical outline (Ver.2019) by World Health Organization (WHO). As one of the most important characteristics of TCM, syndrome differentiation (SD) provides curative effect assurance. SD is a high-dimensional complex function with symptoms/signs as input and syndrome type as output. Artificial neural network (ANN) provides an all-purpose data-driven solution to fit high-dimensional complex function, making ANN a promising approach for modeling intelligent SD (ISD) for TCM. In this paper, we chose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as an example for investigating ISD for TCM based on ANN. First, we built a full-group ANN model that combines ANN with full-group datasets composed of 18471 real clinical records. In addition, we built four extra models with ANN and four subgroup datasets. For comparison, we built another four models with four traditional machine-learning algorithms and the full-group datasets. We used accuracy and F1-scores to evaluate the models' performance. With an accuracy of 86.45% and an F1 score of 82.93%, the full-group ANN model outperformed the four comparison models built from traditional machine-learning algorithms, and however, the four subgroup models achieved a better performance than the full-group ANN model. We concluded that the ANN can potentially provide a way for ISD for TCM, and our subgroup modeling suggests ideas for further optimizing the ISD.

It is of great importance to capture long-range dependency in image deblurring based on deep learning. Existing methods often capture long-range dependency by a large receptive field, which contributes by deep stacks of local convolutional operations. Therefore, it restricts network representation ability and causes unpleasant artifacts of restored images. In this paper, we propose a deep pyramid generative adversarial network with local and nonlocal similarity features, called LNL-PGAN, for natural motion image deblurring. First, we propose a nonlocal feature block as an essential component of the pyramid generator for obtaining nonlocal similarity features at multiple levels. Second, we design a local feature block as another essential component to make a great balance between local and nonlocal similarity features. The local and nonlocal feature blocks capture meaningful short-range and long-range dependencies in the pyramid generator to increase network representation ability. Third, we design a multiscale generative adversarial loss to preserve edge details and facilitate sharp edge prediction of restored images, and we introduce a multistage training strategy to facilitate network training, which can further improve the quality of the restored image. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields superior performance against state-of-the-art methods on natural motion image deblurring in terms of visual quality and objective index, and it can be used as a unified network for single and dynamic motion image deblurring.

A good understanding of the chemical disorder in silicon carbide (SiC) after ion irradiation is crucial for evaluating structural stability in both semiconductor and nuclear power systems. In this study, 6H-SiC single-crystal was irradiated with 500 keV He and 2.5 MeV Fe ions at room temperature, followed by annealing at 1500 °C for 2 h. The chemical disorders were investigated by electron energy-loss spectroscopy with the transmission electron microscopy at 200 kV. Facetted voids were found in the end region of the damaged layer. Compared with the substrate region, the Si at.% was lower, while the values of C and O at.% were higher, in particular in inner voids. SiCOx (x < 1) bonds at the inner surface of the voids were detected. The energy losses of Si, C edges shifted to be lower in the damaged layer. The possible reason is discussed, and the research results will be used for understanding the ion irradiation-induced damage in SiC.

Under drought stress, desert riparian forest plants are highly self-regulating and have their own unique water use and regulation strategies, which can respond positively in several aspects such as physiology, ecology, and individual phenotypes when coping and adapting to the stresses brought by external environmental changes. In addition, as an important component of arid zone ecosystems, desert riparian forest plants maintain the cycling process of energy and material in desert areas. Therefore, it is of great ecological value to study the role played by desert riparian forest plants in desertification control and biodiversity conservation in arid zones. The purpose of this study is to provide basic data and scientific basis for the conservation, and restoration of desert riparian forests in the inland river basin of arid zone. In this paper, the physiological and ecological responses of desert riparian plants under drought stress were analyzed by reviewing the literature and focusing on the key scientific issues such as drought avoidance mechanisms, water use, and water redistribution, and the relationship between interspecific water competition and resource sharing of desert riparian plants. The results showed that: (1) In the inland river basin of arid zone, desert riparian plants show a mutual coordination of increasing soluble sugars, proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), and decreasing peroxidase (POD), to form a unique drought avoidance mechanism, and improve their drought tolerance by changing leaf stomatal conductance resulted from regulating abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin (CTK) content. (2) Desert riparian forest plants have their own unique water use and regulation strategies. When the degree of drought stress increased, Populus euphratica enhanced the water flow of dominant branches by actively sacrificing the inferior branches to ensure and improve the overall survival chances of the plant, while Tamarix ramosissima weaken hydraulic conductance, and increase subsurface material inputs by reducing plant height to cope with drought stress. (3) The root systems of desert riparian plants have hydraulic uplift and water redistribution functions, and, in the hydraulic uplift process of P. euphratica and T. ramosissima root systems, there is a possibility of assisting with other species in water utilization and the existence of a resource sharing mechanism.
