There is concern that the emergence of e-cigarettes could result in an increase in young people's intake of, and exposure to, nicotine. This UK study used friendship group interviews to elicit the perspectives of young people from socioeconomically contrasting backgrounds regarding e-cigarettes. Young people from both advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds described similar e-cigarette practices in the home environment, and, for both health and sensory reasons, viewed these as preferable to tobacco smoking. Space-related practices of adult e-cigarette use in the home were revealed to be more malleable than those of tobacco use. Results also highlighted that e-cigarettes offered young people new opportunities for nicotine consumption in the home. Methods of storing e-cigarettes in domestic spaces posed safety risks to younger children and easy access to e-cigarettes for others.

The growing consumer market in health monitoring devices means that\ud technologies that were once the preserve of the clinic are moving into spaces\ud such as homes and workplaces. We consider how one such device, blood\ud pressure monitors, comes to be integrated into everyday life. We pursue the\ud concept of 'care infrastructure', drawing on recent scholarship in STS and\ud medical sociology, to illuminate the work and range of people, things and spaces\ud involved in self-monitoring. Drawing on a UK study involving observations and\ud interviews with 31 people who have used a consumer blood pressure monitor,\ud we apply the concept beyond chronic illness, to practices involving consumer\ud devices – and develop a critical account of its value. We conclude that the care\ud infrastructure concept is useful to highlight the socio-material arrangements\ud involved in self-monitoring, showing that even for ostensibly personal\ud devices, monitoring may be a shared practice that expresses care for self and for\ud others. The concept also helps draw attention to links between different objects\ud and spaces that are integral to the practice, beyond the device alone. Care\ud infrastructure draws attention to the material, but ensures that analytic\ud attention engages with both material and social elements of practice and their\ud connections.

This is a qualitative data collection. This project was designed to investigate lay ideas/practices concerning heart health in the context of debates about appropriate regulation of preventive drugs (i.e. sale direct to consumers; sale ‘over-the-counter’ (OTC) in pharmacies; or prescription). The initial proposal centered on users of statins purchased direct from pharmacists, but the research was extended to consider people who had been offered prescription statins for primary prevention. The researchers set out to explain how people felt about these drugs; the decisions they made about them; and how their use was articulated with other efforts to reduce cardiovascular risk, e.g. lifestyle change or health related consumption. The following questions were asked: how do people account for their decisions to purchase or try to purchase statins? in these accounts, how does statin use/non-use fit with wider personal projects to avoid heart troubles or maintain health? what do those who have purchased them say about the ways in which they use or choose not to use these products? what do these accounts tell us about the emergence, uptake or transformation of the ‘self-care’ agenda and consumer identities? what implications do these findings have for policy concerning the regulation of non-prescription drugs?
