Developing robust drone detection systems is often constrained by the limited availability of large-scale annotated training data and the high costs associated with real-world data collection. However, leveraging synthetic data generated via game engine-based simulations provides a promising and cost-effective solution to overcome this issue. Therefore, we present SynDroneVision, a synthetic dataset specifically designed for RGB-based drone detection in surveillance applications. Featuring diverse backgrounds, lighting conditions, and drone models, SynDroneVision offers a comprehensive training foundation for deep learning algorithms. To evaluate the dataset's effectiveness, we perform a comparative analysis across a selection of recent YOLO detection models. Our findings demonstrate that SynDroneVision is a valuable resource for real-world data enrichment, achieving notable enhancements in model performance and robustness, while significantly reducing the time and costs of real-world data acquisition. This work aims to present a three-dimensional vehicle dynamics state estimation under varying signal quality. Few researchers have investigated the impact of three-dimensional road geometries on the state estimation and, thus, neglect road inclination and banking. Especially considering high velocities and accelerations, the literature does not address these effects. Therefore, we compare two- and three-dimensional state estimation schemes to outline the impact of road geometries. We use an Extended Kalman Filter with a point-mass motion model and extend it by an additional formulation of reference angles. Furthermore, virtual velocity measurements significantly improve the estimation of road angles and the vehicle's side slip angle. We highlight the importance of steady estimations for vehicle motion control algorithms and demonstrate the challenges of degraded signal quality and Global Navigation Satellite System dropouts. The proposed adaptive covariance facilitates a smooth estimation and enables stable controller behavior. The developed state estimation has been deployed on a high-speed autonomous race car at various racetracks. Our findings indicate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art vehicle dynamics state estimators and an industry-grade Inertial Navigation System. We propose a novel cross-spectral rendering framework based on 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) that generates realistic and semantically meaningful splats from registered multi-view spectrum and segmentation maps. This extension enhances the representation of scenes with multiple spectra, providing insights into the underlying materials and segmentation. We introduce an improved physically-based rendering approach for Gaussian splats, estimating reflectance and lights per spectra, thereby enhancing accuracy and realism. In a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation, we demonstrate the superior performance of our approach with respect to other recent learning-based spectral scene representation approaches (i.e., XNeRF and SpectralNeRF) as well as other non-spectral state-of-the-art learning-based approaches. Our work also demonstrates the potential of spectral scene understanding for precise scene editing techniques like style transfer, inpainting, and removal. Thereby, our contributions address challenges in multi-spectral scene representation, rendering, and editing, offering new possibilities for diverse applications.

Spatially-resolved heating and cooling in nanostructures is nowadays measured with various nanoscale thermometry techniques, including scanning thermometry. Yet the most commonly used theory of nanoscale heating and thermoelectricity -- Landauer scattering theory -- is not appropriate to model such measurements. Hence, we analyze a minimal model of spatially-resolved heat transfer between electrons and phonons in simple thermoelectric nanostructures. This combines Landauer scattering formalism with a Boltzmann equation for transport, revealing the non-locality of Joule heating and Peltier cooling induced by a scatterer in a nanowire. The corresponding heating or cooling of the phonons is caused by the voltage drop at the scatterer, but is often maximal at a certain distance from the scatterer. This distance is of the order of the electron-phonon scattering length. Scanning thermal microscopy, such as SQUID-on-tip thermometers, should detect this non-locality as phonon hot spots and cold spots, spatially separated from the scatterer. We provide physical arguments explaining the thermoelectric response of the combined system of wire and scatterer, and in particular, why the resulting heating and cooling is sometimes the opposite to that predicted by the standard Landauer scattering theory., Comment: Version 2: added 2 references, some other very minor improvements

Floods are an increasingly common global threat, causing emergencies and severe damage to infrastructure. During crises, organisations such as the World Food Programme use remotely sensed imagery, typically obtained through drones, for rapid situational analysis to plan life-saving actions. Computer Vision tools are needed to support task force experts on-site in the evaluation of the imagery to improve their efficiency and to allocate resources strategically. We introduce the BlessemFlood21 dataset to stimulate research on efficient flood detection tools. The imagery was acquired during the 2021 Erftstadt-Blessem flooding event and consists of high-resolution and georeferenced RGB-NIR images. In the resulting RGB dataset, the images are supplemented with detailed water masks, obtained via a semi-supervised human-in-the-loop technique, where in particular the NIR information is leveraged to classify pixels as either water or non-water. We evaluate our dataset by training and testing established Deep Learning models for semantic segmentation. With BlessemFlood21 we provide labeled high-resolution RGB data and a baseline for further development of algorithmic solutions tailored to flood detection in RGB imagery.

We review some basic ideas from the theory of overfilling families and use the special case of coherent states to prove Weyl asymptotics for the euclidean Laplacian and the hyperbolic Laplacian on a domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

The bilateral asymmetry of flanks of animals with visual body marks that uniquely identify an individual, complicates tasks like population estimations. Automatically generated additional information on the visible side of the animal would improve the accuracy for individual identification. In this study we used transfer learning on popular CNN image classification architectures to train a flank predictor that predicts the visible flank of quadruped mammalian species in images. We automatically derived the data labels from existing datasets originally labeled for animal pose estimation. We trained the models in two phases with different degrees of retraining. The developed models were evaluated in different scenarios of different unknown quadruped species in known and unknown environments. As a real-world scenario, we used a dataset of manually labeled Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) from camera traps in the Bavarian Forest National Park to evaluate the model. The best model, trained on an EfficientNetV2 backbone, achieved an accuracy of 88.70 % for the unknown species lynx in a complex habitat.

Analyses for biodiversity monitoring based on passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) recordings is time-consuming and challenged by the presence of background noise in recordings. Existing models for sound event detection (SED) worked only on certain avian species and the development of further models required labeled data. The developed framework automatically extracted labeled data from available platforms for selected avian species. The labeled data were embedded into recordings, including environmental sounds and noise, and were used to train convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) models. The models were evaluated on unprocessed real world data recorded in urban KwaZulu-Natal habitats. The Adapted SED-CRNN model reached a F1 score of 0.73, demonstrating its efficiency under noisy, real-world conditions. Predominant methods for image-based drone detection frequently rely on employing generic object detection algorithms like YOLOv5. While proficient in identifying drones against homogeneous backgrounds, these algorithms often struggle in complex, highly textured environments. In such scenarios, drones seamlessly integrate into the background, creating camouflage effects that adversely affect the detection quality. To address this issue, we introduce a novel deep learning architecture called YOLO-FEDER FusionNet. Unlike conventional approaches, YOLO-FEDER FusionNet combines generic object detection methods with the specialized strength of camouflage object detection techniques to enhance drone detection capabilities. Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) have become a rapidly growing research field with the potential to revolutionize typical photogrammetric workflows, such as those used for 3D scene reconstruction. As input, NeRFs require multi-view images with corresponding camera poses as well as the interior orientation. In the typical NeRF workflow, the camera poses and the interior orientation are estimated in advance with Structure from Motion (SfM). But the quality of the resulting novel views, which depends on different parameters such as the number and distribution of available images, as well as the accuracy of the related camera poses and interior orientation, is difficult to predict. In addition, SfM is a time-consuming pre-processing step, and its quality strongly depends on the image content. Furthermore, the undefined scaling factor of SfM hinders subsequent steps in which metric information is required. In this paper, we evaluate the potential of NeRFs for industrial robot applications. We propose an alternative to SfM pre-processing: we capture the input images with a calibrated camera that is attached to the end effector of an industrial robot and determine accurate camera poses with metric scale based on the robot kinematics. We then investigate the quality of the novel views by comparing them to ground truth, and by computing an internal quality measure based on ensemble methods. For evaluation purposes, we acquire multiple datasets that pose challenges for reconstruction typical of industrial applications, like reflective objects, poor texture, and fine structures. We show that the robot-based pose determination reaches similar accuracy as SfM in non-demanding cases, while having clear advantages in more challenging scenarios. The automation of games using Deep Reinforcement Learning Strategies (DRL) is a well-known challenge in AI research. While for feature extraction in a video game typically the whole image is used, this is hardly practical for many real world games. Instead, using a smaller game state reducing the dimension of the parameter space to include essential parameters only seems to be a promising approach. In the game of Foosball, a compact and comprehensive game state description consists of the positional shifts and rotations of the figures and the position of the ball over time. In particular, velocities and accelerations can be derived from consecutive time samples of the game state. In this paper, a figure detection system to determine the game state in Foosball is presented. We capture a dataset containing the rotations of the rods which were measured using accelerometers and the positional shifts were derived using traditional Computer Vision techniques (in a laboratory setting). This dataset is utilized to train Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based end-to-end regression models to predict the rotations and shifts of each rod. We present an evaluation of our system using different state-of-the-art CNNs as base architectures for the regression model. We show that our system is able to predict the game state with high accuracy. By providing data for both black and white teams, the presented system is intended to provide the required data for future developments of Imitation Learning techniques w.r.t. to observing human players.

Computed Tomography (CT) is a widely used medical imaging modality, and as it is based on ionizing radiation, it is desirable to minimize the radiation dose. However, a reduced radiation dose comes with reduced image quality, and reconstruction from low-dose CT (LDCT) data is still a challenging task which is subject to research. According to the LoDoPaB-CT benchmark, a benchmark for LDCT reconstruction, many state-of-the-art methods use pipelines involving UNet-type architectures. Specifically the top ranking method, ItNet, employs a three-stage process involving filtered backprojection (FBP), a UNet trained on CT data, and an iterative refinement step. In this paper, we propose a less complex two-stage method. The first stage also employs FBP, while the novelty lies in the training strategy for the second stage, characterized as the CT image enhancement stage. The crucial point of our approach is that the neural network is pretrained on a distinctly different pretraining task with non-CT data, namely Gaussian noise removal on a variety of natural grayscale images (photographs). We then fine-tune this network for the downstream task of CT image enhancement using pairs of LDCT images and corresponding normal-dose CT images (NDCT). Despite being notably simpler than the state-of-the-art, as the pretraining did not depend on domain-specific CT data and no further iterative refinement step was necessary, the proposed two-stage method achieves competitive results. Objective: Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is an emerging medical imaging modality which has gained increasing interest in recent years. Among the benefits of MPI are its high temporal resolution, and that the technique does not expose the specimen to any kind of ionizing radiation. It is based on the non-linear response of magnetic nanoparticles to an applied magnetic field. From the electric signal measured in receive coils, the particle concentration has to be reconstructed. Due to the ill-posedness of the reconstruction problem, various regularization methods have been proposed for reconstruction ranging from early stopping methods, via classical Tikhonov regularization and iterative methods to modern machine learning approaches. In this work, we contribute to the latter class: we propose a plug-and-play approach based on a generic zero-shot denoiser with an $\ell^1$-prior. Approach: We validate the reconstruction parameters of the method on a hybrid dataset and compare it with the baseline Tikhonov, DIP and the previous PP-MPI, which is a plug-and-play method with denoiser trained on MPI-friendly data. Main results: We offer a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the zero-shot plug-and-play approach on the 3D Open MPI dataset. Moreover, we show the quality of the approach with different levels of preprocessing of the data. Significance: The proposed method employs a zero-shot denoiser which has not been trained for the MPI task and therefore saves the cost for training. Many popular piecewise regression models rely on minimizing a cost function on the model fit with a linear penalty on the number of segments. However, this penalty does not take into account varying complexities of the model functions on the segments potentially leading to overfitting when models with varying complexities, such as polynomials of different degrees, are used. In this work, we enhance on this approach by instead using a penalty on the sum of the degrees of freedom over all segments, called degrees-of-freedom penalized piecewise regression (DofPPR). We show that the solutions of the resulting minimization problem are unique for almost all input data in a least squares setting. We develop a fast algorithm which does not only compute a minimizer but also determines an optimal hyperparameter -- in the sense of rolling cross validation with the one standard error rule -- exactly. This eliminates manual hyperparameter selection. Our method supports optional user parameters for incorporating domain knowledge. We provide an open-source Python/Rust code for the piecewise polynomial least squares case which can be extended to further models. We demonstrate the practical utility through a simulation study and by applications to real data. Learning-based scene representations such as neural radiance fields or light field networks, that rely on fitting a scene model to image observations, commonly encounter challenges in the presence of inconsistencies within the images caused by occlusions, inaccurately estimated camera parameters or effects like lens flare. To address this challenge, we introduce RANdom RAy Consensus (RANRAC), an efficient approach to eliminate the effect of inconsistent data, thereby taking inspiration from classical RANSAC based outlier detection for model fitting. In contrast to the down-weighting of the effect of outliers based on robust loss formulations, our approach reliably detects and excludes inconsistent perspectives, resulting in clean images without floating artifacts. For this purpose, we formulate a fuzzy adaption of the RANSAC paradigm, enabling its application to large scale models. We interpret the minimal number of samples to determine the model parameters as a tunable hyperparameter, investigate the generation of hypotheses with data-driven models, and analyze the validation of hypotheses in noisy environments. We demonstrate the compatibility and potential of our solution for both photo-realistic robust multi-view reconstruction from real-world images based on neural radiance fields and for single-shot reconstruction based on light-field networks. In particular, the results indicate significant improvements compared to state-of-the-art robust methods for novel-view synthesis on both synthetic and captured scenes with various inconsistencies including occlusions, noisy camera pose estimates, and unfocused perspectives. Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is a promising noninvasive in vivo imaging modality that makes it possible to map the spatial distribution of superparamagnetic nanoparticles by exposing them to dynamic magnetic fields. In the Field-Free Line (FFL) scanner topology, the spatial encoding of the particle distribution is performed by applying magnetic fields vanishing on straight lines. The voltage induced in the receiving coils by the particles when exposed to the magnetic fields constitute the signal from which the particle distribution is to be reconstructed. To avoid lengthy calibration, model-based reconstruction formulae have been developed for the 2D FFL scanning topology. In this work we develop reconstruction formulae for 3D FFL. The weak disorder potential seen by the electrons of a two-dimensional electron gas in high-mobility semiconductor heterostructures leads to fluctuations in the physical properties and can be an issue for nanodevices. In this paper, we show that a scanning gate microscopy (SGM) image contains information about the disorder potential, and that a machine learning approach based on SGM data can be used to determine the disorder. Magnetic Particle Imaging is an emerging imaging modality through which it is possible to detect tracers containing superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The exposure of the particles to dynamic magnetic fields generates a non-linear response that is used to locate the particles and produce an image of their distribution. The bounding box that can be covered by a single scan curve depends on the strength of the gradients of the magnetic fields applied, which is limited due to the risk of causing peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) in the patients. To address this issue, multiple scans are performed. The scan data must be merged together to produce reconstructions of larger regions of interest. In this paper we propose a mathematical framework which can deal with rather general multi-patching scenarios including rigid transformations of the field of view (FoV), the specimen and of the scanner. We show the flexibility of this framework in a variety of different scanning scenarios. Moreover, we describe an iterative reconstruction algorithm that yields a reconstruction of the target distribution by minimizing a convex functional which includes positivity constraints and sparsity enforcing priors. In this short note we prove Lieb--Thirring inequalities on manifolds with negative constant curvature. The discrete spectrum appears below the continuous spectrum $(d-1)^2/4, \infty)$, where $d$ is the dimension of the hyperbolic space. As an application we obtain a P\'olya type inequality with not a sharp constant. An example of a 2D domain is given for which numerical calculations suggest that the P\'olya inequality holds for it.

The manual processing and analysis of videos from camera traps is time-consuming and includes several steps, ranging from the filtering of falsely triggered footage to identifying and re-identifying individuals. In this study, we developed a pipeline to automatically analyze videos from camera traps to identify individuals without requiring manual interaction. This pipeline applies to animal species with uniquely identifiable fur patterns and solitary behavior, such as leopards (Panthera pardus). We assumed that the same individual was seen throughout one triggered video sequence. With this assumption, multiple images could be assigned to an individual for the initial database filling without pre-labeling. The pipeline was based on well-established components from computer vision and deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) features. We augmented this basis by implementing additional components to substitute otherwise required human interactions. Based on the similarity between frames from the video material, clusters were formed that represented individuals bypassing the open set problem of the unknown total population. The pipeline was tested on a dataset of leopard videos collected by the Pan African Programme: The Cultured Chimpanzee (PanAf) and achieved a success rate of over 83% for correct matches between previously unknown individuals. The proposed pipeline can become a valuable tool for future conservation projects based on camera trap data, reducing the work of manual analysis for individual identification, when labeled data is unavailable.

We report the development of GPT-4, a large-scale, multimodal model which can accept image and text inputs and produce text outputs. While less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, including passing a simulated bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers. GPT-4 is a Transformer-based model pre-trained to predict the next token in a document. The post-training alignment process results in improved performance on measures of factuality and adherence to desired behavior. A core component of this project was developing infrastructure and optimization methods that behave predictably across a wide range of scales. We investigate the capabilities of neural inverse procedural modeling to infer high-quality procedural yarn models with fiber-level details from single images of depicted yarn samples. While directly inferring all parameters of the underlying yarn model based on a single neural network may seem an intuitive choice, we show that the complexity of yarn structures in terms of twisting and migration characteristics of the involved fibers can be better encountered in terms of ensembles of networks that focus on individual characteristics. We analyze the effect of different loss functions including a parameter loss to penalize the deviation of inferred parameters to ground truth annotations, a reconstruction loss to enforce similar statistics of the image generated for the estimated parameters in comparison to training images as well as an additional regularization term to explicitly penalize deviations between latent codes of synthetic images and the average latent code of real images in the latent space of the encoder. We demonstrate that the combination of a carefully designed parametric, procedural yarn model with respective network ensembles as well as loss functions even allows robust parameter inference when solely trained on synthetic data. Since our approach relies on the availability of a yarn database with parameter annotations and we are not aware of such a respectively available dataset, we additionally provide, to the best of our knowledge, the first dataset of yarn images with annotations regarding the respective yarn parameters.
