A dataset of microphysical cloud parameters from optically thin clouds, retrieved from infrared spectral radiances measured in summer 2017 in the Arctic, is presented. Measurements were conducted using a mobile Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer which was carried by the RV Polarstern. This dataset contains retrieved optical depths and effective radii of ice and water, from which the liquid water path and ice water path are calculated. These water paths and the effective radii are compared with derived quantities from a combined cloud radar, lidar and microwave radiometer measurement synergy retrieval, called Cloudnet. Comparing the liquid water paths from the infrared retrieval and Cloudnet shows significant correlations with a standard deviation of 8.60 g · m-2. Although liquid water path retrievals from microwave radiometer data come with a uncertainty of at least 20 g · m-2, a significant correlation and a standard deviation of 5.32 g · m-2 between the results of clouds with a liquid water path of at most 20 g · m- 2 retrieved from infrared spectra and results from Cloudnet can be seen. Therefore, despite its large uncertainty, the comparison with data retrieved from infrared spectra shows that optically thin clouds of the measurement campaign in summer 2017 can be observed well using microwave radiometers within the Cloudnet framework. Apart from this, the dataset of microphysical cloud properties presented here allows to perform calculations of the cloud radiative effects, when the Cloudnet data from the campaign are not available, which was from the 22nd July 2017 until the 19th August 2017. Infrared spectral radiances of optically thin clouds show high sensitivity to changes of the microphysical cloud parameters. Therefore, measurements of infrared spectral radiance of clouds in the spectral range from 770.9 cm-1 to 1163.4 cm-1 using a mobile Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer were performed on the German research vessel Polarstern in the Arctic in summer 2017. A new retrieval for microphysical cloud parameters of optically thin clouds called Total Cloud Water retrieval, designed to retrieve cloud water optical depth τcw, total effective droplet radius rtotal and condensed water path CWP from infrared spectral radiances without the incorporation of spectral radiances in the far-infrared below 600cm-1, has been developed for application on radiances from the measurement campaign. Validation is performed against derived quantities from a combined cloud radar, lidar and microwave radiometer measurement synergy retrieval, called Cloudnet, performed by the Leibnitz Institute for Trospheric Research. Applied to spectral radiances of synthetic testcases, Total Cloud Water retrieval shows a high ability to retrieve τcw with a correlation of |r| = 0.98, as well as to retrieve CWP with |r| = 0.95 and rtotal with |r| = 0.86. Using the dataset from the campaign, a comparison between CWP from Total Cloud Water retrieval and Cloudnet was performed and showed a correlation of |r| = 0.81. In conclusion, the comparison to artificial clouds and the validation using Cloudnet showed that Total Cloud Water retrieval is able to retrieve the condensed water path from clouds for optically thin clouds and makes it a useful complementation for thin clouds to existing microwave-based measurements. Instrumental line shape (ILS) degradation can cause significant biases between global FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) networks if not properly treated. Currently, how ILS degradation influences the global NDACC (Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) gases retrieval and how much ILS deviation is acceptable for each NDACC gas are still not fully quantified. We simulated ILS degradations with respect to typical types of misalignment, and compared their influence on each NDACC gas. The sensitivities of total column, root mean square of fitting residual (RMS), total random uncertainty, total systematic uncertainty, total uncertainty, degrees of freedom for signal (DOFs), and profile with respect to different levels of ILS degradation for all current NDACC gases, i.e., O3, HNO3, HCl, HF, ClONO2, CH4, CO, N2O, C2H6, and HCN, were investigated. The influence of an imperfect ILS on NDACC gases retrieval were assessed, and the consistency under different meteorological conditions and solar zenith angles (SZA) were examined. The study concluded that the influence of ILS degradation can be approximated by the linear sum of individual modulation efficiency (ME) amplitude influence and phase error (PE) influence. The PE influence is of secondary importance compared with the ME amplitude influence. For total column retrieval, the stratospheric gases are more sensitive to ILS degradation than the tropospheric gases. For profile retrieval, the positive ME has more influence on tropospheric gases than the stratospheric gases. In contrast, the negative ME has more influence on stratospheric gases than the tropospheric gases. In order to suppress the influence on total column for ClONO2 and other NDACC gases within 10 % and 1 %, respectively, the permitted maximum ILS degradation for each NDACC gas was deduced (summarized in Table 5). Solar absorption spectroscopy in the near infrared has been performed in Ny-Ålesund (78.9° N, 11.9° E) since 2002; however, due to the high latitude of the site, the sun is below the horizon from October to March (polar night) and no solar absorption measurements are possible. Here we present a novel method of retrieving the total column dryair mole fractions (DMFs) of CO2 and CH4 using moonlight in winter. Measurements have been taken during the polar nights from 2012 to 2016 and are validated with TCCON (Total Carbon Column Observing Network) measurements by solar and lunar absorption measurements on consecutive days and nights during spring and autumn. The complete seasonal cycle of the DMFs of CO2 and CH4 is presented and a precision of up to 0.5% is achieved. A comparison of solar and lunar measurements on consecutive days during day and night in March 2013 yields non-significant biases of 0.66±4.56ppm for xCO2 and -1.94±20.63ppb for xCH4. The TCCON (Total Carbon Column Observing Network) and most NDACC (Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) sites assume an ideal ILS (instrumental line shape) for analysis of the spectra. In order to adapt the radiant energy received by the detector, an attenuator or different sizes of field stop can be inserted in the light path. These processes may alter the alignment of a high-resolution FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectrometer, and may result in bias due to ILS drift. In this paper, we first investigated the sensitivity of the ILS monitoring with respect to application of different kinds of attenuators for ground-based high-resolution FTIR spectrometers within the TCCON and NDACC networks. Both lamp and sun cell measurements were conducted after the insertion of five different attenuators in front of and behind the interferometer. The ILS characteristics derived from lamp and sun spectra are in good agreement. ILSs deduced from all lamp cell measurements were compared. As a result, the disturbances to the ILS of a high-resolution FTIR spectrometer with respect to the insertion of different attenuators at different positions were quantified. In this work, the behavior of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell with a Pt/Ru anode exposed to H2/CO mixtures is investigated. A compact, isothermal one-dimensional model is derived to address the phenomena occurring at the along-the- channel direction. Besides material balances for the anode channel and electrode, the model considers charge balances for the membrane (Laplace equation) and both the anodic and cathodic double layers. The model predicts the formation of complex spatiotemporal patterns for a wide range of technical relevant operating conditions. The system can be understood as a chain of coupled oscillators. The electrical coupling is influenced by the electrolyte conductivity. Furthermore, the system features coupling by the anode gas channel dynamics. Depending on the ratio of the characteristic time for CO transport in the gas channel and the characteristic time required for CO adsorption, two limiting cases with varying degrees of complexity exist. The qualitative theoretical results of the present contribution give a guideline for the design of a validating experiment and pave the way for a systematic experimental analysis.
