Abstract Background Life’s Essential 8 (LE8) is a novel assessment of cardiovascular health (CVH) by evaluating lifestyle, and reports of the associations between LE8 and urinary metals on mortality have been very limited. This study aimed to conduct a prospective cohort study and investigate the combined effects of metals and LE8 on mortality in U.S. adults. Methods This study enrolled participants with complete information on urinary metals, LE8, mortality status, and confounders from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2018). The Cox regression model, adaptive lasso penalized regression, and restricted cubic spline were used to analyze the individual effects of metals and LE8 on all-cause mortality. The additive and multiplicative interaction scales and quantile g-computation were used to evaluate the interaction and combined effects. Stratified analyses were performed to clarify whether metals and LE8 interacted with other variables to influence all-cause mortality. Results A total of 8017 participants were included in this study. The concentrations of cadmium, cobalt, lead, antimony, and thorium were greater in the low CVH group than in the high CVH group [median (µg/L): 0.29 vs. 0.19, 0.36 vs. 0.35, 0.48 vs. 0.39, 0.05 vs. 0.04, and 0.07 vs. 0.06]. The interaction between cadmium and LE8 was statistically significant, with a synergy index of 1.169 (95% CI: 1.004, 1.361). The stratified analyses showed that the interaction between age and LE8 had an impact on all-cause mortality (P for interaction = 0.004). Conclusions In this representative sample of the U.S. population, we found that the combined effect of cadmium, lead, thallium, and LE8 was positively associated with all-cause mortality. Furthermore, the interaction between cadmium and LE8 influenced all-cause mortality. So people should adopt healthy behaviors and reduce heavy metal exposure to minimize the risk of adverse health outcomes.

Background: The catheter tip placed between the T6 and T7 vertebrae is recognized as an optimal position for the totally implantable venous access ports (TIVAPs). This study aimed to propose a simple formula for calculating the optimal insertion depth of the right internal jugular central venous catheter (CVC) of TIVAP in Chinese patients. Methods: This was a prospective observational study. The medical records of 151 patients with TIVAPs placement were retrospectively analyzed. Patient's height and actual insertion depth of CVC were used to build a simple linear regression model. The Peres' formula was revised to better calculate the optimal insertion depth of the right internal jugular CVC of TIVAPs, accounting for population-specific anatomical variations observed in Chinese patients. A total of 158 patients scheduled for TIVAPs placement were prospectively recruited. The insertion depth of catheter was preoperatively determined according to the established formula, and postoperative chest X-ray was performed to determine the position of catheter tip. The rate of proper position of catheter (the catheter tip within T6 or T7 vertebrae) was calculated to assess the clinical feasibility and effectiveness of the new formula. Results: The proper position rate was 64.24 % (97/151) in the retrospective group. According to patients' height and insertion depth of CVC of these 97 cases with proper position, Peres' formula was revised to ‘insertion depth = 0.1∗height – 4 (cm)’. Based on insertion depth predicted by the new formula, the proper position rate in the prospective group reached 86.08 % (136/158). Conclusion: The simple formula for calculating the insertion depth of right internal jugular CVC of TIVAPs is clinically feasible for Chinese patients.

The study of agricultural non-point source pollution (ANNSP) patterns and driving mechanisms is crucial for regional ecological management. This paper evaluates the sources of ANNSP in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020 using the source list method. Additionally, nitrogen source data for the InVEST model were supplemented and adjusted, and the nitrogen output load and proportions derived in farmland from both methods were compared. The temporal and spatial distribution of nitrogen emission intensity was analyzed based on InVEST model outputs. Key source areas were identified through hotspot analysis, and spatial driving factors were examined using geodetector. Key findings reveal: 1) While the source list method estimated a higher nitrogen output load, both methods concurred on the proportion of agricultural nitrogen. The main sources of nitrogen input were overuse of fertilizer and livestock breeding. 2) Over this period, nitrogen emission intensity declined, exhibiting a distinct spatial pattern of “northwest low, southeast high.” 3) The extent of critical source areas underwent a dynamic shift, initially contracting before expanding. 4) Rainfall emerged as the primary driver of spatial variability in agricultural TN emission intensity. These insights offer critical reference points for achieving efficient ANNSP management in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain.

A reasonable ecological security pattern can improve landscape connectivity, promote biological circulation, maintain ecological processes, and improve regional ecosystem service functions and human well-being. Accordingly, systematically and scientifically analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the regional ecological security pattern has essential theoretical and practical significance. This research proposed that the analysis framework of the ecological security pattern should include a complete system composed of ecological sources, resistance surfaces, and corridors. Thus, this research uses the ecological network method to systematically analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the ecological security pattern in the Qinba–Dabie intersection zone in China, a complete natural ecological unit across administrative regions, from 2000 to 2020. Results revealed the following: (1) The distribution change law of the ecological sources in the study area was consistent with the distribution change law of their centrality. (2) In the northeast of the study area, the disappearance of the small ecological sources, which play a stepping stone role, led to a longer length and a weaker centrality of ecological corridors. (3) The resistance surface in the study area showed an overall growth trend, while the ecological corridor network showed an overall deterioration trend. Based on the results, this research suggests that the systematic analysis and targeted protection of ecological sources are the basis for maintaining the ecological security pattern, and targeted improvement of ecological resistance surface is the key to improving the ecological security pattern. Therefore, measures such as the protection of core ecological sources, the rational layout of ecological sources as stepping stones, and the improvement of resistance values at ecological key points should be paid attention to in the future.

Background: Inflammation is a significant factor in adverse health outcomes, but the combined effects of diets with varying oxidation levels and exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on inflammation are not well understood. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of the recognized Dietary Oxidative Balance Score (DOBS) and five VOCs on the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Methods: This cross-sectional study included data from participants in three cycles (2003–2004, 2005–2006, 2009–2010) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We used Spearman correlation, logistic regression, and trend tests to explore the associations between DOBS, VOCs, SII, and CRP. Additionally, we conducted restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis to assess dose-response relationships between exposure and effect. G-computation and stratified analyses were performed to further elucidate these associations. Results: We included 7033 eligible participants, with 48.8 % males and 51.2 % females. Spearman correlation revealed that DOBS was negatively correlated with SII and CRP, while the five VOCs were positively correlated with SII and CRP. Although fully adjusted logistic regression models did not yield statistically significant results, trend tests indicated a gradual decrease in SII and CRP with increasing DOBS, a finding validated by RCS analysis. G-computation results demonstrated that the combined effect of DOBS and VOCs on inflammation was positive, with DOBS exerting a negative effect and benzene, ethylbenzene, and 1,4-dichlorobenzene exerting positive effects. Stratified analysis showed that maintaining physical activity significantly influenced the effects of DOBS and VOCs on inflammation. Conclusion: This study suggests that adjusting dietary structure and reducing daily exposure to VOCs can effectively reduce inflammation in the body.

Underground pumped storage power plant (UPSP) is an innovative concept for space recycling of abandoned mines. Its realization requires better understanding of the dynamic performance and durability of reservoir rock. This paper conducted ultrasonic detection, split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) impact, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and backscatter electron observation (BSE) tests to investigate the dynamical behaviour and microstructure of sandstone with cyclical dry-wet damage. A coupling FEM-DEM model was constructed for reappearing mesoscopic structure damage. The results show that dry-wet cycles decrease the dynamic compressive strength (DCS) with a maximum reduction of 39.40%, the elastic limit strength is reduced from 41.75 to 25.62 MPa. The sieved fragments obtain the highest crack growth rate during the 23rd dry-wet cycle with a predictable life of 25 cycles for each rock particle. The pore fractal features of the macropores and micro-meso pores show great differences between the early and late cycles, which verifies the computational statistics analysis of particle deterioration. The numerical results show that the failure patterns are governed by the strain in pre-peak stage and the shear cracks are dominant. The dry-wet cycles reduce the energy transfer efficiency and lead to the discretization of force chain and crack fields.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced cement based grouting material is an important part of green manufacturing industry. Our previous research showed that this material can effectively enhance the impact resistance of rock matrix. In this study, We conducted a comprehensive study and quantitative analysis of the changes in pore structure of this material under impact conditions. Dynamic impact testing and computed tomography (CT) revealed that CNTs significantly increased the cement content in the sample by 79.11 %. The CNTs group exhibited higher internal pore density and uniformity, effectively suppressing the formation of dynamic cracks in the sample. Compared to Non-carbon nanotubes (Non-CNTs) cement-based materials, the peak dynamic stress of the CNTs group increased by 4.76–21.54 %, while the porosity decreased by 57.26 %.This study further refined the enhancement behaviors of carbon nanotubes reinforced cement based, and making outstanding contributions to engineering practice.

ABSTRACTMonitoring rapidly changing inland water bodies using remote sensing requires a temporal resolution of at least 3 days and a spatial resolution of at least 30 meters. However, the current satellite data falls short of meeting these monitoring requirements. Spatiotemporal fusion (STF) presents an effective method for obtaining continuous high-resolution data. This study explores five established STF algorithms, namely Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (STARFM), Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (ESTARFM), Robust Adaptive Spatial and Temporal Fusion Model (RASTFM), Flexible Spatiotemporal Data Fusion (FSDAF) and Unmixing-Based Data Fusion (UBDF), through experimentation across 45 lakes worldwide. Results are comprehensively compared and analyzed using two indicators: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Robert’s edge (Edge) based on a dataset that contains 360 image pairs collected in 2021. The five algorithms underwent 950 random experiments. The results indicate that: (1) ESTARFM outperforms the other four algorithms in terms of visual effect and accuracy assessment. Its average RMSE of and EDGE are 0.0023 sr−1 and −0.0419, respectively. Followed by: FSDAF (RMSE: 0.0026 sr−1, EDGE: −0.0584), RASTFM (RMSE: 0.0029 sr−1, EDGE: −0.4128), STARFM (RMSE: 0.0027 sr−1, EDGE: −0.5207), and UBDF (RMSE: 0.0030 sr−1, EDGE: −0.6505) algorithms. (2) the algorithms have varied performance in different water monitoring missions: for water body extraction, the ESTARFM and FSDAF algorithms are recommended; for algae bloom detection, the FSDAF algorithm is recommended; for seasonal water body monitoring, the ESTARFM is recommended; for quantitative monitoring, the ESTARFM, FSDAF, and UBDF algorithms are recommended. (3) STARFM-like algorithms are sensitive to radiometric uncertainties and UBDF algorithm is sensitive to spatial uncertainties. The findings of this study can help generate high spatiotemporal resolution remote sensing datasets for water quality monitoring, waterbody detection, algae bloom tracking, and other water environmental monitoring missions.

IntroductionIn order to explore the correlation between discharge readiness and Harris score or self-care ability of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) based on the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) concept. We carried out this single center retrospective study.MethodsWe enrolled 331 patients who underwent THA. These patients were divided into the higher score group and the lower score group according to median discharge readiness score. After the baseline data of these patients were compared, the effect factors of discharge readiness of these patients was analyzed through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses and mixed effects models.ResultsThe results demonstrated that there was a correlation between discharge readiness and changes in Harris score 30 days after discharge (compared with that before surgery) in these patients. Besides, the Harris score and self-care ability 30 days after discharge were higher than those at the time of discharge. In addition, patients in the higher score group exhibited a higher Harris score compared with those in the lower score group. From the evaluation at different time points after discharge, there was a significant difference in the Harris score between both groups.DiscussionIt can be inferred that the discharge readiness of patients undergoing THA was correlated with the Harris score but not with the self-care ability. These results are expected to provide guidance for the physical and mental recovery of patients undergoing total hip replacement under the ERAS concept. Furthermore, these findings may contribute to higher diagnosis, treatment, and nursing levels of orthopedic medical staff.

In the era of sharing economy, the tourism market is increasingly characterized by personalized demand, mobile consumption and product segmentation. This paper aims to apply big data mining technology in the field of smart tourism. Firstly, it focuses on image summary selection and collaborative filtering technology based on big data mining. It then demonstrates the integration of blockchain in smart tourism, emphasizing the use of decentralized structures and smart contracts to achieve data security and transparency, and describes the testing process of smart tourism platforms, including data preparation and platform operational efficiency testing. Finally, the research results of this paper are summarized, and the development potential and practical application value of smart tourism are demonstrated. The results show that in the smart tourism big data mining model, the minimum support for the data set is 10 % and 20 %, respectively. Moreover, with the increase of the number of nodes in the same data set, the running time decreases gradually. It can be seen that smart tourism big data mining has strong scalability.

Influenza A virus (IAV) is a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus that causes acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome, posing a serious threat to both animal and human health. N6-methyladenosine (m6A), a prevalent and abundant post-transcriptional methylation of RNA in eukaryotes, plays a crucial regulatory role in IAV infection by altering viral RNA and cellular transcripts to affect viral infection and the host immune response. This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying m6A modification and its regulatory function in the context of IAV infection and the host immune response. This will provide a better understanding of virus–host interactions and offer insights into potential anti-IAV strategies.

Abstract Respiratory distress (RD) has been reported in SARS-CoV-2 exposed uninfected (SEU) term neonates. Prior studies suggest that prenatal exposure to Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) may activate an inflammatory cascade in the newborn airway. In this study, we examine the relationship between maternal COVID-19 vaccination and neonatal RD using a longitudinal cohort of mother-infant pairs in Los Angeles, CA. Two-hundred and twenty-one mothers with laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy and 227 exposed fetuses are enrolled in our study. Maternal disease severity and neonatal RD variables were defined based on current accepted clinical criteria. To explore the multifactorial associations between maternal COVID-19 parameters and infant RD, we utilize a multivariable logistic regression model and a proteomic sub-analysis to propose a pathway for the development of RD following in utero exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Unusually high rates of RD are observed in SEU infants (17%). The odds ratio of RD is 3.06 (95% CI:1.08-10.21) in term neonates born to unvaccinated individuals versus those born to individuals vaccinated prior to maternal infection. Proteomic analysis reveals a robust inflammatory response associated with ciliary dysregulation and enhanced IgE production among SEU neonates with RD. Maternal vaccination against COVID-19 reduces the frequency of neonatal RD.

This study aimed to investigate the clinical viability of utilizing the flexor hallucis brevis as an alternative site for neuromuscular monitoring compared to the conventional adductor pollicis. Patients were recruited from three medical centers. Cis-atracurium was administered, and two monitors were employed independently to assess neuromuscular blockade of the adductor pollicis and the ipsilateral flexor hallucis brevis, following a train of four (TOF) pattern until TOF ratios exceeded 0.9 or until the conclusion of surgery. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in onset time, duration of no-twitch response, spontaneous recovery time, and total monitoring time between the two sites, with mean differences of −53.54 s, −2.49, 3.22, and 5.89 min, respectively (P < 0.001).The posterior tibial nerve-flexor hallucis brevis pathway presents a promising alternative for neuromuscular monitoring during anesthesia maintenance. Further investigation is warranted to explore its utility in anesthesia induction and recovery. Trial registration: The trial was registered at www.chictr.org.cn (20/11/2018, ChiCTR1800019651).

BackgroundSerum creatinine is a prognostic marker for various conditions, but its significance of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage is still poorly understood. This study aims to elucidate the correlation between admission serum creatinine (sCr) levels and all-cause mortality within 30 days among individuals affected by non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).MethodsThis cohort study included 672 non-traumatic SAH adults. It utilized data from the MIMIC-IV database from 2008 to 2019. The patients’ first-time serum creatinine was recorded. Subsequently, an examination of the 30-day all-cause mortality was conducted. Employing a multiple logistic regression model, a nomogram was constructed, while the association between sCr and 30-day all-cause mortality was evaluated using Kaplan–Meier survival curves. The calibration curve was employed to assess the model’s performance, while subgroup analysis was employed to examine the impact of additional complications and medication therapy on outcomes.ResultsA total of 672 patients diagnosed with non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage were included in the study. The mortality rate within this timeframe was found to be 24.7%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that sCr served as an independent prognostic indicator for all-cause mortality within 30 days of admission for SAH patients [OR: 2(1.18–3.41); p = 0.01]. A comprehensive model was constructed, incorporating age, sCr, white blood cell count (WBC), glucose, anion gap, and partial thromboplastin time (PTT), resulting in a prediction model with an AUC value of 0.806 (95% CI: 0.768, 0.843), while the AUC for the test set is 0.821 (95% CI: 0.777–0.865).ConclusionCreatinine emerges as a significant biomarker, closely associated with heightened in-hospital mortality in individuals suffering from SAH.

The pathogenic mechanisms of bacterial infections and resultant sepsis are partly attributed to dysregulated inflammatory responses sustained by some late-acting mediators including the procathepsin-L (pCTS-L). It was entirely unknown whether any compounds of the U.S. Drug Collection could suppress pCTS-L-induced inflammation, and pharmacologically be exploited into possible therapies. Here, we demonstrated that a macrophage cell-based screening of a U.S. Drug Collection of 1360 compounds resulted in the identification of progesterone (PRO) as an inhibitor of pCTS-L-mediated production of several chemokines [e.g., Epithelial Neutrophil-Activating Peptide (ENA-78), Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1) or MCP-3] and cytokines [e.g., Interleukin-10 (IL-10) or Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)] in primary human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). In vivo, these PRO-entrapping 2,6-dimethal-β-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD) nanoparticles (containing 1.35 mg/kg PRO and 14.65 mg/kg DM-β-CD) significantly increased animal survival in both male (from 30% to 70%, n = 20, P = 0.041) and female (from 50% to 80%, n = 30, P = 0.026) mice even when they were initially administered at 24 h post the onset of sepsis. This protective effect was associated with a reduction of sepsis-triggered accumulation of three surrogate biomarkers [e.g., Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) by 40%; Macrophage Inflammatory Protein-2 (MIP-2) by 45%; and Soluble Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor I (sTNFRI) by 80%]. Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) analysis revealed a strong interaction between PRO and pCTS-L (KD = 78.2 ± 33.7 nM), which was paralleled with a positive correlation between serum PRO concentration and serum pCTS-L level (ρ = 0.56, P = 0.0009) or disease severity (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, SOFA; ρ = 0.64, P = 0.0001) score in septic patients. Our observations support a promising opportunity to explore DM-β-CD nanoparticles entrapping lipophilic drugs as possible therapies for clinical sepsis.

Background and purposeNeutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been identified as potential prognostic markers in various conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. This study aims to investigate the dynamic changes of NLR and MLR following cerebral contusion and their associations with six-month outcomes.MethodsRetrospective data were collected from January 2016 to April 2020, including patients diagnosed with cerebral contusion and discharged from two teaching-oriented tertiary hospitals in Southern China. Patient demographics, clinical manifestations, laboratory test results (neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte counts) obtained at admission, 24 hours, and one week after cerebral contusion, as well as outcomes, were analyzed. An unfavorable outcome was defined as a Glasgow Outcome Score (GOS) of 0-3 at six months. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of prognosis, while receiver characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the optimal cutoff values for NLR and MLR.ResultsA total of 552 patients (mean age 47.40, SD 17.09) were included, with 73.19% being male. Higher NLR at one-week post-cerebral contusion (adjusted OR = 4.19, 95%CI, 1.16 - 15.16, P = 0.029) and higher MLR at admission and at 24 h (5.80, 1.40 - 24.02, P = 0.015; 9.06, 1.45 - 56.54, P = 0.018, respectively) were significantly associated with a 6-month unfavorable prognosis after adjustment for other risk factors by multiple logistic regression. The NLR at admission and 24 hours, as well as the MLR at one week, were not significant predictors for a 6-month unfavorable prognosis. Based on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the optimal thresholds of NLR at 1 week and MLR at admission after cerebral contusion that best discriminated a unfavorable outcome at 6-month were 6.39 (81.60% sensitivity and 70.73% specificity) and 0.76 (55.47% sensitivity and 78.26% specificity), respectively.ConclusionNLR measured one week after cerebral contusion and MLR measured at admission may serve as predictive markers for a 6-month unfavorable prognosis. These ratios hold potential as parameters for risk stratification in patients with cerebral contusion, complementing established biomarkers in diagnosis and treatment. However, further prospective studies with larger cohorts are needed to validate these findings.

Abstract Background This study aimed to validate the efficacy the multiplication of neutrophils and monocytes (MNM) and a novel dynamic nomogram for predicting in-hospital death in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods Retrospective study was done on 986 patients with endovascular coiling for aSAH. Independent risk factors associated with in-hospital death were identified using both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. In the development cohort, a dynamic nomogram of in-hospital deaths was introduced and made available online as a straightforward calculator. To predict the in-hospital death from the external validation cohort by nomogram, calibration analysis, decision curve analysis, and receiver operating characteristic analysis were carried out. Results 72/687 patients (10.5%) in the development cohort and 31/299 patients (10.4%) in the validation cohort died. MNM was linked to in-hospital death in univariate and multivariate regression studies. In the development cohort, a unique nomogram demonstrated a high prediction ability for in-hospital death. According to the calibration curves, the nomogram has a reliable degree of consistency and calibration. With threshold probabilities between 10% and 90%, the nomogram’s net benefit was superior to the basic model. The MNM and nomogram also exhibited good predictive values for in-hospital death in the validation cohort. Conclusions MNM is a novel predictor of in-hospital mortality in patients with aSAH. For aSAH patients, a dynamic nomogram is a useful technique for predicting in-hospital death.

Abstract Horse chestnut (Aesculus chinensis) is an important medicinal tree that contains various bioactive compounds, such as aescin, barrigenol-type triterpenoid saponins (BAT), and aesculin, a glycosylated coumarin. Herein, we report a 470.02 Mb genome assembly and characterize an Aesculus-specific whole-genome duplication event, which leads to the formation and duplication of two triterpenoid biosynthesis-related gene clusters (BGCs). We also show that AcOCS6, AcCYP716A278, AcCYP716A275, and AcCSL1 genes within these two BGCs along with a seed-specific expressed AcBAHD6 are responsible for the formation of aescin. Furthermore, we identify seven Aesculus-originated coumarin glycoside biosynthetic genes and achieve the de novo synthesis of aesculin in E. coli. Collinearity analysis shows that the collinear BGC segments can be traced back to early-diverging angiosperms, and the essential gene-encoding enzymes necessary for BAT biosynthesis are recruited before the splitting of Aesculus, Acer, and Xanthoceras. These findings provide insight on the evolution of gene clusters associated with medicinal tree metabolites.

Abstract The mixing and combustion processes under different reference velocities in a gas turbine combustor were numerically investigated using the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method. The flow and combustion fields show strong self-similarity except on the slow auto-ignition in the mixing layer between fuel-rich product and fresh air upstream of the flame stabilization position. The time-scale analysis was carried out to understand the combustion modes inside the combustor. In general, the residence time of the fuel-mixture is much longer than both the chemical time scale and the mixing time scale. Thus, the combustion properties in each sub-zone were dominated by the mean flow structures. Furthermore, the combustion process exhibits a mixing-controlled feature in total. However, partially premixed combustion still appears on the flame base. Most of the fuel was found to be oxidized in the primary zone and the intermediate zone; however, the slow oxidization reactions also play a non-negligible role on the whole combustion process. Finally, a sketch map on the space of mixture fraction and combustion efficiency was proposed to understand the mixing and oxidization experiences of the fuel mixture.

The impact of climate change on agricultural quality development under the constraint of China’s “Double Carbon” target has been widely discussed by policy practitioners and academic theorists. This paper attempts to deconstruct the logic of how climate change affects agricultural total factor productivity (TFP) in three dimensions—the structure of agricultural input factors, the change in the cropping system, and the stability of crop supply. This paper also reveals the mechanism through which biased technological progress increases agricultural TFP by weakening the magnitude of climate change and empirically tests it by using China’s provincial-level data from 2000 to 2021. This study showed that average annual temperature and annual precipitation had significant negative effects on agricultural TFP, that the number of sunshine hours had a significant positive effect on agricultural TFP, and that obvious regional differences existed in the effect of climate change on agricultural TFP. Further mechanism tests revealed that biased technological progress positively moderated the effect of climate change on agricultural TFP. Based on these findings, the appropriate countermeasures for improving climate early warning mechanisms, promoting the progress of appropriate technology, and fostering new agricultural management bodies.

Glucocorticoids are often used and highly effective anti-inflammatory medications, but prolonged topical application may alter the epidermis’ normal structure and function, potentially resulting in a number of adverse effects. Topical glucocorticoid-induced skin inflammation is a dangerous condition that develops after topical glucocorticoid use. The patients become dependent on the medication and, even after the medication is stopped, the dermatitis symptoms recur, severely impairing their quality of life. Thus, the need to aggressively confront Topical glucocorticoid-induced skin inflammation is critical. Prior research has demonstrated that topical administration of licorice’s flavonoid component liquiritin stimulates epidermal proliferation, which in turn enhances the creation of collagen and the healing of wounds. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to determine if topical use of liquiritin carbomer gel can treat glucocorticoid-induced changes in mice skin epidermal function, and the mechanisms involved. The findings demonstrated that, in the mice model of topical glucocorticoid-induced skin inflammation, liquiritin carbomer gel aided in the restoration of skin barrier function. These outcomes may have been caused by enhanced expression of the proteins Aquaporin 3, Keratin 10, and Claudin-1, as well as the restoration of epidermal hyaluronan content. In the meantime, liquiritin carbomer gel dramatically decreased the expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ, and IgE in mice, according to ELISA tests. Furthermore, topical treatment of liquiritin carbomer gel boosted the expression of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and decreased malondialdehyde expression, potentially counteracting the detrimental effects of glucocorticoids on the epidermis. In summary, these findings imply that topical liquiritin carbomer gel can treat glucocorticoid-induced skin damage through various mechanisms of action.

As an emerging direction of multi-agent collaborative control technology, multiple autonomous underwater vehicle (multi-AUV) cooperative area search technology has played an important role in civilian fields such as marine resource exploration and development, marine rescue, and marine scientific expeditions, as well as in military fields such as mine countermeasures and military underwater reconnaissance. At present, as we continue to explore the ocean, the environment in which AUVs perform search tasks is mostly unknown, with many uncertainties such as obstacles, which places high demands on the autonomous decision-making capabilities of AUVs. Moreover, considering the limited detection capability of a single AUV in underwater environments, while the area searched by the AUV is constantly expanding, a single AUV cannot obtain global state information in real time and can only make behavioral decisions based on local observation information, which adversely affects the coordination between AUVs and the search efficiency of multi-AUV systems. Therefore, in order to face increasingly challenging search tasks, we adopt multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) to study the problem of multi-AUV cooperative area search from the perspective of improving autonomous decision-making capabilities and collaboration between AUVs. First, we modeled the search task as a decentralized partial observation Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP) and established a search information map. Each AUV updates the information map based on sonar detection information and information fusion between AUVs, and makes real-time decisions based on this to better address the problem of insufficient observation information caused by the weak perception ability of AUVs in underwater environments. Secondly, we established a multi-AUV cooperative area search system (MACASS), which employs a search strategy based on multi-agent reinforcement learning. The system combines various AUVs into a unified entity using a distributed control approach. During the execution of search tasks, each AUV can make action decisions based on sonar detection information and information exchange among AUVs in the system, utilizing the MARL-based search strategy. As a result, AUVs possess enhanced autonomy in decision-making, enabling them to better handle challenges such as limited detection capabilities and insufficient observational information.

Scientific quantitative measurement of the coupling relationship between urban population (UP) and urban land (UL) is conducive to promoting intensive land use, coordinated human–land development, and new urbanization development. This research proposed an improved coupling model of polar coordinates to study the spatiotemporal coupling characteristics between UP and UL at the prefecture-level city scale in China from 2010 to 2020. The study results include the following: (1) The growth rate of UL in China’s prefecture-level cities was higher than that of UP. The per capita urban land (PUL) was always within the ideal range, and the dynamic human–land coupling state remained reasonable. (2) The UP, UL, and dynamic human–land coupling rationality in China showed characteristics that were high in the east and low in the west. The PUL showed characteristics that were high in the northwest and low in the southeast. (3) This study divided China’s prefecture-level cities into four regions according to the coupling characteristics and formulated regionally differentiated optimization strategies. In summary, this study carried out a more scientific and reasonable quantitative measurement of the coupling relationship between UP and UL in China, resulting in a more reliable and targeted formulation of optimization strategies.

Abstract Background Ferroptosis is a regulated cell death mode triggered by iron-dependent toxic membrane lipid peroxidation. As a novel cell death modality that is morphologically and mechanistically different from other forms of cell death, such as apoptosis and necrosis, ferroptosis has attracted extensive attention due to its association with various diseases. Evidence on ferroptosis as a potential therapeutic strategy has accumulated with the rapid growth of research on targeting ferroptosis for tumor suppression in recent years. Methods We summarize the currently known characteristics and major regulatory mechanisms of ferroptosis and present the role of ferroptosis in cellular stress responses, including ER stress and autophagy. Furthermore, we elucidate the potential applications of ferroptosis in radiotherapy and immunotherapy, which will be beneficial in exploring new strategies for clinical tumor treatment. Result and conclusion Based on specific biomarkers and precise patient-specific assessment, targeting ferroptosis has great potential to be translated into practical new approaches for clinical cancer therapy, significantly contributing to the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cancer.

Graphene oxide (GO) opens a new pathway for reducing carbon footprint in the construction industry and fabricating high-strength cementitious composites. However, due to the dispersion limitation, the application of GO in practical engineering has not been widely accepted. Hence, we evaluated the potential of the GO-fly ash hybrid as additives in cement under a coating method to assist the dispersion of the GO nanosheets. The results demonstrated that the GO could be successfully coated on the surface of the fly ash particles with good dispersion and strong connection via the proposed coating method. Besides, the coating method allowed more GO nanosheets to concentrate in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between fly ash and cement particles, making GO application more economical. The coated GO could then generate nucleation effects to promote the hydration process and provide pore-infilling effects to decrease the ITZ width (about 12.5%) and the crack ratio in ITZ (over 10%). Compared with the plain cement pastes, the workability, mechanical strength, and impermeability of the GO-coated fly ash modified cementitious slurry can be significantly reinforced up to 21.6%, 38.4% and 106.4%, respectively. The enhancement rate is further improved by about 7.1–58.5% compared with the traditional ultrasonic dispersion method. We expect the proposed innovative coating method would provide a good perspective of the future application of high-performance, cost-effective and environmentally friendly cementitious composites.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to examine the predictive value of the multiplication of neutrophil and monocyte counts (MNM) in peripheral blood, and develop a new predictive model for the prognosis of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods This is a retrospective analysis that included 2 separate cohorts of patients undergoing endovascular coiling for aSAH. The training cohort consisted of 687 patients in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College; the validation cohort consisted of 299 patients from Sun Yat‐sen University's Affiliated Jieyang People's Hospital. The training cohort was used to develop 2 models to predict unfavorable prognosis (modified Rankin scale of 3–6 at 3 months): one was based on traditional factors (e.g., age, modified Fisher grade, NIHSS score, and blood glucose), and another model that included traditional factors as well as MNM on admission. Results In the training cohort, MNM upon admission was independently associated with unfavorable prognosis (odds ratio after adjustment, 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03–1.10). In the validation cohort, the basic model that included only traditional factors had 70.99% sensitivity, 84.36% specificity, and 0.859 (95% CI, 0.817–0.901) area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Adding MNM increased model sensitivity (from 70.99% to 76.48%), specificity (from 84.36% to 88.63%), and overall performance (AUC 0.859 [95% CI, 0.817–0.901] to 0.879 [95% CI, 0.841–0.917]). Interpretation MNM upon admission is associated with unfavorable prognosis in patients undergoing endovascular embolization for aSAH. The nomogram including MNM is a user‐friendly tool to help clinicians quickly predict the outcome of patients with aSAH.

Accurately identifying the high-temperature history experienced by rocks is essential for understanding their behaviour and predicting properties. However, current approaches are limited by the heterogeneity of rocks, test scale and costs. Here, we proposed an economical, efficient and accurate approach to identifying the rocks after high-temperature deterioration via deep learning. This deep learning-based method exhibited superior abilities in distinguishing the heat-treated rock. Using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image covering a size of 14.6 μm × 14.6 μm, the high-temperature deterioration history of rocks can be recognized with an accuracy of 80.2%. Features such as cracks, rock patterns, and cleavage steps in SEM images would further improve the recognition accuracy. For example, SEM images with higher fractal box dimensions show a higher recognization accuracy, especially for temperatures under 600 °C. Besides, using the deep Taylor decomposition algorithm, the high-temperature deterioration regions of the rocks in the microscale were successfully located, extracted, and characterized for the first time. This study highlights the vast potential of the deep learning-based approach in damage deterioration identification of rock after high temperature, which significantly extends the application of deep learning in underground projects.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2DTMDs) and their van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWHs) have garnered significant attention working as the channel material of optoelectronics. The development of new heterojunction growth schemes may also provide better performance for optoelectronic devices. In this paper, PtSe2 thin films with controllable size and thickness are directly grown on MoS2 nanosheet by sputtering-selenization two-step growth method. The photodetector with PtSe2/MoS2 heterojunction exhibits a type-I band alignment and leads to an impressive broadband spectral photoresponse (405 to 1550 nm). It can achieve responsivity as high as 5.42 A/W, a detectivity of 2.52 × 1010 Jones, and a fast response rate (92/112 μs for rise/fall time respectively). In addition, the device has excellent stability in the air atmosphere and keeps its photoresponse after even six months. The in-situ growth method provides a new scheme to construct heterojunctions of 2DTMDs and develop energy-efficient photodetectors with enhanced performance. It also supplements the practical production and application of large-scale broadband detectors.

Thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) has emerged as a key player in cancer and diabetes since it targets thioredoxin (TRX)-mediated redox regulation and glucose transporter (GLUT)-mediated metabolism. TXNIP consists of two arrestin (ARR, N-ARR and C-ARR) domains at its amino-terminus and two PPxY (PY) motifs and a di-leucine (LL) motif for endocytosis at its carboxyl-terminus. Here, we report that TXNIP shuffles between TRX and GLUTs to regulate homeostasis of intracellular oxidative stress and glucose metabolism. While TXNIP functions as a gatekeeper of TRX by default, it robustly interacted with class I GLUTs through its C-ARR domain upon increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species. This interaction prompted the surface expression downregulation and lysosomal degradation of GLUTs by its carboxyl-terminal LL endocytic signaling motif to attenuate glucose uptake. Consequently, TXNIP expression significantly limited glucose uptake, leading to the suppression of glycolysis, hexosamine biosynthesis, and the pentose phosphate pathway. Our findings establish a fundamental link between ROS and glucose metabolism through TXNIP and provide a promising target for the drug development against GLUT-related metabolic disorders.

Abstract Objectives Large hepatocellular carcinoma (LHCC) is prone to short‐term recurrence and poor long‐term survival after hepatectomy, and there is still a lack of effective neoadjuvant treatments to improve recurrence‐free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). We retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of preoperative transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) in solitary LHCC (≥5 cm). Materials and Methods A multicenter medical database was used to analyze preoperative TACE's effects on RFS, OS, and perioperative complications in patients with solitary LHCC who received surgical treatment from January 2005 to December 2015. The patients were divided into Group A (5.0–9.9 cm) and Group B (≥10 cm), with 10 cm as the critical value, and the effect of preoperative TACE on RFS, OS and perioperative complications was assessed in each subgroup. Results In the overall population, patients with preoperative TACE had better RFS and OS than those without preoperative TACE. However, after stratifying the patients into the two HCC groups, preoperative TACE only improved the survival outcomes of patients with Group B (≥10 cm). Multivariate Cox‐regression analysis showed that lack of preoperative TACE was an independent risk factor for RFS and OS in the overall population and in Group B but not in Group A. Conclusions Preoperative TACE is beneficial for patients with solitary HCC (≥10 cm).

Abstract Reliable city-level product, building, and infrastructure material stocks data are essential for understanding historical material use patterns, benchmarking material efficiency, and informing future recycling potentials. However, such urban material stocks data are often limited, due primarily to unavailable, inconsistent, or noncontinuous city-level statistics. Here, we provided such an Urban Product, Building, and Infrastructure Material Stocks (UPBIMS) dataset for China, a country that has undergone a remarkable urbanization process in the past decades, by collating different official statistics and applying various gap-filling methods. This dataset contains the stock of 24 materials contained in 10 types of products, buildings, and infrastructure in all 337 prefecture-level cities in China from 1978 to 2020. This quality controlled and unified dataset is the first of its kind with such a full coverage of all prefecture-level Chinese cities and can be used in a variety of applications, for example in urban geography, industrial ecology, circular economy, and climate change mitigation. Every piece of data is tagged with its source and the dataset will be periodically updated.

Membrane separation technology plays a vital role in natural gas processing due to its cost-effectiveness, excellent efficiency and low energy consumption. In this study, we demonstrate the superior permeability and selection capability of the graphene kirigami (GK) membrane for natural gas purification via molecular dynamics insights. The results indicate that the separation rate of the GK membrane can reach up to 4.1 × 106 GPU (gas permeance unit) with nearly 100% selectivity of the permeating gases mixture (H2S, CO2 and N2) over the non-permeating gas (CH4). Furthermore, the Monte Carlo simulation reveals that the unique geometry of the GK structure introduces a funnel-shaped adsorption channel to guide specific molecules’ separation and enhance the efficiency of the membrane. Compared with the nano-porous graphene (NPG) membrane, the gas separation rate of the GK membrane can be increased by more than four times. Moreover, the GK membrane does not require the modification of functional groups in natural gas purification, which provides great convenience for future applications in practical projects. The considerable potential of the GK membrane underpinned by the findings of this study will attract broad interest in the field of separation and purification.

Endogenous microRNAs (miRNA) in tumors are currently under exhaustive investigation as potential therapeutic agents for cancer treatment. Nevertheless, RNase degradation, inefficient and untargeted delivery, limited biological effect, and currently unclear side effects remain unsettled issues that frustrate clinical application. To address this, a versatile targeted delivery system for multiple therapeutic and diagnostic agents should be adapted for miRNA. In this study, we developed membrane-coated PLGA-b-PEG DC-chol nanoparticles (m-PPDCNPs) co-encapsulating doxorubicin (Dox) and miRNA-190-Cy7. Such a system showed low biotoxicity, high loading efficiency, and superior targeting ability. Systematic delivery of m-PPDCNPs in mouse models showed exceptionally specific tumor accumulation. Sustained release of miR-190 inhibited tumor angiogenesis, tumor growth, and migration by regulating a large group of angiogenic effectors. Moreover, m-PPDCNPs also enhanced the sensitivity of Dox by suppressing TGF-β signal in colorectal cancer cell lines and mouse models. Together, our results demonstrate a stimulating and promising m-PPDCNPs nanoplatform for colorectal cancer theranostics.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to retrospectively investigate the use of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (O-CEUS) in assessing the thickness of the gastric wall for gastric cancer (GC) screening and to establish screening strategies for GC with different risk stratifications based on the gastric wall thickness.MethodsFrom January 2015 to March 2020, people who underwent O-CEUS at the Physical Examination Center of our hospital with at least three years of follow-up were included in this study. The thickness of the gastric wall measured by O-CEUS was divided into three groups using 6 mm and 9 mm as cutoff values. The occurrence of GC in each group was observed. The imaging and clinical information of these populations were recorded and analyzed. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and Cox’s proportional hazards regression were performed to calculate the risk of GC occurrence.ResultsA total of 4,047 people were finally included in this study. During the follow-up period, GC occurred in 7 individuals (incidence rate 0.17%). Among them, according to the thickness of the gastric wall, one case occurred in Group A (< 6 mm), two cases occurred in Group B (6-9 mm), and four cases occurred in Group C (>9mm). Based on Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, the curves of the three groups were significantly different (P < 0.01). The risk of GC occurrence in Group C and Group B were higher than that in Group A (4.76E+2-fold and 1.50E+2-fold).ConclusionO-CEUS is a convenient, economical, safe, and noninvasive screening method for GC. Measuring the thickness of the gastric wall is helpful to predict the risk of GC occurrence according to our stratification screening system.

ObjectiveThe lactate/albumin ratio (LAR) has been used as a novel prognostic indicator for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, sepsis, heart failure, and acute respiratory failure. However, its potential in predicting all-cause mortality in patients with ischemic stroke (IS) has not been evaluated. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the correlation between LAR and 28-day all-cause mortality in IS patients without reperfusion therapy.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study used data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) (v2.0) database. It included 568 IS adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). The correlation between LAR and ICU 28-day all-cause mortality rate was analyzed using multiple COX regression analysis and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were used to assess the relationship between LAR and 28-day mortality. In addition, a subgroup analysis was performed to investigate the impact of other influencing factors on outcomes. The primary outcome was the ability of LAR to predict 28-day mortality in IS patients.ResultsAmong the 568 patients with IS, 370 survived (survival group) and 198 died (non-survival group) within 28 days of admission (mortality rate: 34.9%). A multivariate COX regression analysis indicated that LAR was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality within 28 days after admission for patients with IS (hazard ratio: 1.32; 95% confidence interval: 1.03–1.68; P = 0.025). We constructed a model that included LAR, age, race, sex, white blood cell count, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, and anion gap (AG) and established a prediction model with an area under the curve (AUC) value of 71.5% (95% confidence interval: 67.1%−75.8%). The optimal cutoff value of LAR that separated the survival group and the non-survival group based on the Youden index was 0.55. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves plotted using this critical value showed that patients with LAR ≥ 0.55 had a significantly higher 28-day all-cause mortality rate than patients with LAR < 0.55 (P = 0.0083).ConclusionLAR can serve as an independent predictor of all-cause mortality within 28 days after admission for patients with IS.

Objective We aimed to construct and validate a prognostic nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival (CSS) after surgery in patients with advanced endometrial carcinoma (EC).Design Retrospective cohort study.Setting and participants The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Database contains cancer incidence and survival data from population-based cancer registries in the USA. A total of 5445 patients from the SEER Database diagnosed with advanced EC between 2004 and 2015 were included and randomised 7:3 into a training cohort (n=3812) and a validation cohort (n=1633).Outcome measure CSS.Results The nomograms for CSS included 10 variables (positive regional nodes, age, tumour size, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, grade, ethnicity, income, radiation, chemotherapy and historical stage) based on the forward stepwise regression results. They revealed discrimination and calibration using the concordance index (C-index) and area under the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve, with a C-index value of 0.7324 (95% CI=0.7181 to 0.7468) and 0.7511 (95% CI=0.7301 to 0.7722) for the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Using calibration plots, a high degree of conformance was shown between the predicted and observed results. Additionally, a comparison of the nomogram and FIGO staging based on changes in the C-index, net reclassification index and integrated discrimination improvement demonstrated that the nomogram had better accuracy and efficacy.Conclusions We successfully constructed an accurate and effective nomogram to predict CSS in patients with advanced EC, which may help clinicians determine optimal individualised treatment strategies for patients with advanced EC. The predictive performance of the nomogram was evaluated thoroughly, but only internally. Therefore, further validation using different data sources is warranted in future related studies.

Megacities play important roles in countries' politics, economy, culture, etc. Exploring the law of urban expansion of megacities has important reference for sustainable urbanization. Here, the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban expansion were quantified analyzed in 21 Chinese megacities from 2000 to 2020 with quantitative measurement indicators and explored the human–land synergistic relationship used the decoupling model. Results are as follows: (1) China's megacities experienced significant expansion, and urban expansion characterized as rapid initially but slowed down thereafter. (2) Urban expansion in megacities was characterized as having significant spatial differences, and rapidly expanding megacity centers moved from eastern to midwestern China. (3) Urban spatial expansion of megacities was mainly an enclave type in 2000–2010 and marginal type in 2010–2020. (4) The main type of human–land synergistic relationship in megacities were weak decoupling, there is a significant increase in expansive coupling and expansive negative decoupling in 2010–2020; (5) Lastly, human–land synergy relationship in most megacities was uncoordinated based on the per capita urban land area and decoupling type. The findings of this study can deepen the understanding of the characteristics and quality of urbanization evolution, and provides reference for high-quality development planning and decision-making in megacities.

Chalcone, a common chemical scaffold of many naturally occurring compounds, has been widely used as an effective template for drug discovery due to its broad biological activities. In this study, a series of chalcone derivatives were designed and synthesized based on the hybridization of 1-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)butan-1-one with chalcone. Interestingly, most of the target compounds exhibited inhibitory effect of tumor cells in vitro. Especially, (E)-3-(5-bromopyridin-2-yl)-1-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (B3) revealed over 10-fold potency than 5-fluorocrail against the Hela and MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 3.204 and 3.849 μM respectively. Moreover, B3 displayed low toxicity on normal cells. Further experiments indicated that B3 effectively inhibited the proliferation and migration of tumor cells, and promoted their apoptosis. The calculation and prediction of ADME showed that the target compounds may have good pharmacokinetic properties and oral bioavailability. Reverse molecular docking suggested that the possible target of B3 is CDK1. Taken together, these results suggested that B3 appears to be a promising candidate that merits further attention in the development of anticancer drugs.

Abstract Background Evidence regarding the relationship between serum vitamin C levels and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether serum vitamin C levels are independently associated with HPV infection. Methods Data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003–2006. A total of 2174 women, 18–59 years of age, were enrolled in this study. The associations between serum vitamin C levels (continuous and categorical forms) and cervicovaginal HPV infection were estimated using weighted logistic regression. Results The adjusted binary logistic regression showed that serum vitamin C was not associated with the risk of HPV infection after adjusting for age, race, poverty income ratio, alcohol consumption, smoking, body mass index, education, and health condition (odds ratio [OR] 0.998, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.994–1.001). Serum vitamin C levels were converted from a continuous variable to a categorical variable for the analysis. Compared with the vitamin C deficiency and hypovitaminosis groups, there was a negative correlation between vitamin C and HPV infection when vitamin C was adequate (OR 0.7, 95% CI: 0.52–0.94); however, when the serum vitamin C level was inadequate and saturated, this negative correlation was weaker or nonexistent (OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.56–1.03 and OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.55–1.04, respectively). Abstract Background Flavonoids are necessary for plant growth and resistance to adversity and stress. They are also an essential nutrient for human diet and health. Among the metabolites produced in Cannabis sativa (C. sativa), phytocannabinoids have undergone extensive research on their structures, biosynthesis, and biological activities. Besides the phytocannabinoids, C. sativa is also rich in terpenes, alkaloids, and flavonoids, although little research has been conducted in this area. Results In this study, we identified 11 classes of key enzyme-encoding genes, including 56 members involved in the flavonoid biosynthesis in C. sativa, from their physical characteristics to their expression patterns. We screened the potentially step-by-step enzymes catalyzing the precursor phenylalanine to the end flavonoids using a conjoin analysis of gene expression with metabolomics from different tissues and chemovars. Flavonol synthase (FLS), belonging to the 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase (2-ODD) superfamily, catalyzes the dihydroflavonols to flavonols. In vitro recombinant protein activity analysis revealed that CsFLS2 and CsFLS3 had a dual function in converting naringenin (Nar) to dihydrokaempferol (DHK), as well as dihydroflavonols to flavonols with different substrate preferences. Meanwhile, we found that CsFLS2 produced apigenin (Api) in addition to DHK and kaempferol when Nar was used as the substrate, indicating that CsFLS2 has an evolutionary relationship with Cannabis flavone synthase I. Conclusions Our study identified key enzyme-encoding genes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids in C. sativa and highlighted the key CsFLS genes that generate flavonols and their diversified functions in C. sativa flavonoid production. This study paves the way for reconstructing the entire pathway for C. sativa’s flavonols and cannflavins production in heterologous systems or plant culture, and provides a theoretical foundation for discovering new cannabis-specific flavonoids.

Abstract Human host-associated microbial communities in body sites can reflect health status based on the population distribution and specific microbial properties in the heterogeneous community. Bacteria identification at the single-cell level provides a reliable biomarker and pathological information for clinical diagnosis. Nevertheless, biosamples obtained from some body sites cannot offer sufficient sample volume and number of target cells as required by most of the existing single-cell isolation methods such as flow cytometry. Herein we report a novel integrated microfluidic system, which consists of a microemulsion module for single-bacteria encapsulation and a sequential microdroplet capture and release module for selectively extracting only the single-bacteria encapsulated in microdroplets. We optimize the system for a success rate of the single-cell extraction to be > 38%. We further verify applicability of the system with prepared cell mixtures (Methylorubrum extorquens AM1 and Methylomicrobium album BG8) and biosamples collected from human skin, to quantify the population distribution of multiple key species in a heterogeneous microbial community. Results indicate perfect viability of the single-cell extracts and compatibility with downstream analyses such as PCR. Together, this research demonstrates that the reported single-bacteria extraction system can be applied in microbiome and pathology research and clinical diagnosis as a clinical or point-of-care device.

Millions of craniofacial surgeries are performed annually worldwide, and materials for craniofacial bone repair are widely needed. However, traditionally applied materials, such as titanium and polymethylmethacrylate, have some shortcomings (limited malleability, material-based toxicity, non-biodegradability, lack of bioactivity, etc.). Zinc based biodegradable metals possess superior mechanical properties, biodegradability, and bioactivity, which make them promising candidate materials. Here, we successfully fabricated Zn-0.6Cu thin sheets (thickness ≤0.5 mm, suitable for craniofacial surgery) through combined extrusion and rolling. The in vitro and in vivo performances were generally evaluated and compared to those of a commercially applied pure titanium mesh. The mechanical properties of Zn-0.6Cu sheets were superior to those of clinically used polymethyl methacrylate. They were easy to shape and would not fracture during deformation. The Zn-0.6Cu sheet exhibited a gentle degradation mode, and proper implant-derived Zn improved osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by up-regulating expression of osteogenesis related genes (alkaline phosphatase, bone morphogenetic protein-2). Thus, it further promoted extracellular matrix mineralization by improving calcium deposition for bone formation. It also improved the expression of angiogenesis-related genes (vascular endothelial growth factor, hypoxia-inducible factor alpha). The Zn-0.6Cu sheet exhibited high osteogenic activity in a cranial defect animal model compared to a non-biodegradable pure titanium mesh. Significant surface degradation occurred after two months in vivo, and degradation products were compatible with surrounding tissues. In general, the Zn-0.6Cu thin sheet seems to be a bioactive material selection for craniofacial bone repair, which might possibly accelerate defect repair and prevent adverse complications.

The aim of this study was to explore the characteristics of non-point source pollution of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) under the background of climate and land use in Shandong Province. First, using the InVEST NDR module in the model, N and P non-point source pollution in 2010 and 2020 in Shandong Province were simulated; then, based on precipitation data under three different global climate models (MRI-ESM-0, GFDL-ESM4, and Ec-Earth3) and two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP245 and SSP585), land use data under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP245 and SSP585) were used to simulate and predict the non-point source pollution of N and P in Shandong Province in 2030. The results showed the following: (1) On the time scale, the output load and total output of N and P decreased during 2010–2020, while the output load and total output of N and P increased during 2020–2030. (2) On the spatial scale, the spatial distribution of N and P output loads in 2010, 2020, and 2030 is roughly the same, being “low in the northwest and high in the southeast”. (3) Different climate scenarios have a great influence on N and P output load and total output, and the N and P pollution in the SSP585 scenario is more serious. The total output of N and P did not change much in different climate models, while the spatial distribution of the output load of N and P varied significantly, indicating that different climate models had a greater impact on the spatial distribution of the output load of N and P. (4) The overall cold hot spot pattern of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in Shandong Province is stable, basically showing a “band + cluster + scatter” distribution pattern; the hot spot area in the central and southern region of Shandong Province changes little regardless of the model, the northwest is basically a cold spot area, and the nitrogen and phosphorus hot spot area under the SSP245 scenario in Ec-Earth3 model had the least amount of change. According to research results, combined with the actual situation of Shandong Province, it is hoped that it can provide theoretical basis for the prevention and control of non-point source pollution in Shandong Province in the future.

Under the influence of climate change and human activities, the intra-annual distribution characteristics of streamflow have changed, directly affecting the exploitation of water resources and the health of ecosystems. The trend-free pre-whitening Mann-Kendall (TFPW-MK) test method, concentration degree and concentration period, and Bernaola-Galvan (BG) segmentation algorithm were applied to analyze variation trend, intra-annual distribution characteristics, and abrupt year of streamflow. Then, the monthly water storage and monthly actual evaporation of the source area of the Lancang River (SALR) were calculated by the monthly ABCD model. Finally, the contributions of different factors to runoff variability at multiple time scales were quantified using the seasonal-scale Budyko hypothesis approach. The results showed that: (1) The runoff revealed a significant upward trend on the annual scale. Runoff exhibited a significant upward trend in January, October and November, and runoff in other months and seasons exhibited an insignificant upward trend. (2) The intra-annual distribution characteristics of runoff in the SALR showed an obvious “Single-peak type“ distribution, reaching a maximum in July and August. (3) The year of sudden change in streamflow was 2008. (4) The contribution of climate change and human activities to the annual runoff change was 83.3% and 16.7%, respectively. The degree of influence of climate change on runoff change was ranked as spring (96.8%), autumn (85.3%), winter (82.2%) and summer (58.2%). The order of impact of human activity on runoff change was summer (41.8%), winter (17.8%), autumn (14.7%), spring (3.2%).

Background: Accurate and convenient serological markers for prognosis after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are still lacking. We aimed to explore the predictive value of serum calcium for prognosing outcomes within 6 months after TBI. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective study, 1255 and 719 patients were included in development and validation cohorts, respectively, and their 6-month prognoses were recorded. Serum calcium was measured through routine blood tests within 24 h of hospital admission. Two multivariate predictive models with or without serum calcium for prognosis were developed. Receiver operating characteristics and calibration curves were applied to estimate their performance. Results: The patients with lower serum calcium levels had a higher frequency of unfavorable 6-month prognosis than those without. Lower serum calcium level at admission was associated with an unfavorable 6-month prognosis in a wide spectrum of patients with TBI. Lower serum calcium level and our prognostic model including calcium performed well in predicting the 6-month unfavorable outcome. The calcium nomogram maintained excellent performance in discrimination and calibration in the external validation cohort. Conclusions: Lower serum calcium level upon admission is an independent risk factor for an unfavorable 6-month prognosis after TBI. Integrating serum calcium into a multivariate predictive model improves the performance for predicting 6-month unfavorable outcomes.

The low-energy electronic excitations in topological semimetal yield a plethora of a range of novel physical properties. As a relatively scarce branch, the research of triple-degenerate semi-metal is mostly confined to the stage of physical properties and theoretical analysis, there are still challenges in its practical application. This research showcases the first application of the triply degenerate semimetal PtBi _2 in electronic devices. Leveraging a van der Waals transfer method, PtBi _2 flakes were used as interlayer contacts for metal electrodes and WS _2 in transistors. The transistor achieved a switching ratio above 10 ^6 and average mobility can reach 85 cm ^2 V ^−1 s ^−1 , meeting integrated circuit requirements. Notably, the excellent air stability of PtBi _2 simplifies the device preparation process and provides more stable device performance. Transfer process reduces the Schottky barrier between metal electrodes and semiconductors while avoiding Fermi pinning during metal deposition to achieve excellent contact. This groundbreaking work demonstrates the practical applicability of PtBi _2 in the field of electronic devices while opening new avenues for the integration of novel materials in semiconductor technology, setting a precedent for future innovations.

The assessment of ecological assets is of great significance for protecting and using ecological resources. Traditional methods of ecological assets assessment, which adopt the planar area as the standard, often ignore the impact of the surface area, resulting in a large difference between the evaluation and the actual result. To fill this gap, this paper conducted research on ecological assets assessment based on surface area. Taking mainland China into consideration, this paper constructed a triangulation network based on 30 m resolution DEM data to simulate the real land surface form and calculate its surface area. Then, land use/cover data from 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 were used to estimate the ecosystem service value (ESV) and analyze its spatial variation. This paper found that: (1) The surface area of mainland China is 1.04 × 107 km2, which is 8.2 × 105 km2 larger than the planar area; (2) A huge difference was found between the total ESV based on the surface and planar area, with an absolute difference of ∼$141.66-$144.14 billion and a relative difference of ∼ 10%. For different ecosystem types, the largest difference was found in the forest ecosystem, followed by the grassland ecosystem, while the wetland ecosystem showed the smallest difference; (3) The high value of absolute difference between the ESV based on the surface and planar area was concentrated in Tibet and Northeast China. The high value of relative difference was mainly distributed in Central and Southern China. On the provincial level, the absolute difference in Tibet ranked in the first place. There was a total of 14 provinces showing a relative difference above 10%; (4) The total ESV based on surface area was basically unchanged, while various ecosystems underwent significant changes. The ESV of wetland increased by nearly 50%, while the ESV of grassland decreased by more than 10%; and (5) Change in the ESV based on surface area showed obvious spatial heterogeneity. High-High cluster was located in Tibet and the Northeast China while the Low-Low cluster was distributed in the North China Plain and Xinjiang. This paper emphasized the importance of the surface area in resource survey and asset estimation and gave more effective suggestions for ecological protection.

Nature-inspired design motifs have contributed to the development of advanced materials. Here the authors present a segmental design motif to realize a compression-resisting lightweight mechanical metamaterial with a progressive failure behavior and rotational degree of freedom.

InAs/AlSb is a material system that can be used as a low-noise avalanche detector and operates in the short-wave infrared band. The interface parameters determine the wave function overlap (WFO). Maximizing the WFO of InAs/AlSb superlattices improves the quantum efficiency (QE) of infrared avalanche photodetectors (APDs). However, this remains a huge challenge. Here, the 8-band k·p perturbation method based on Bloch wave envelope function approximation was used to calculate the energy level structure of InAs/AlSb superlattices. The results indicate that the WFO is enhanced with increasing InSb interface thickness or when the InSb (or AlAs) interface is far from the intersection of InAs and AlSb. As the AlAs interface thickness increases, the WFO enhances and then reduces. The maximum increase in WFO is 15.7%, 93%, and 156.8%, respectively, with three different models. Based on the stress equilibrium condition, we consider the interface engineering scheme proposed for enhancing WFO with an increase of 16%, 114%, and 159.5%, respectively. Moreover, the absorption wavelength shift is less than ±0.1 μm. Therefore, the interface layer thickness and position can be designed to enhance the WFO without sacrificing other properties, thereby improving the QE of the device. It provides a new idea for the material epitaxy of APDs.
