Abstract

The sport of boxing has existed since ancient times, with fights sometimes ending in death. In the modern world, with our greater medical knowledge, the risks of brain and other life-changing injuries have called into question whether boxing has a place in contemporary society. In fact, professional boxing has been banned in some European countries. There are also questions about whether it is appropriate to encourage spectators to watch two individuals attempting to punch each other into oblivion and about the effect this can have on those watching. The fact that, in recent years, we have seen the development of women's boxing both in the Olympics and at the professional level raises further questions. The particular emphasis of this paper is to note the number of committed Christians involved in boxing from grassroots to the elite level and to consider whether involvement in such a violent sport can be reconciled with the teaching of Jesus Christ. The main source of data is published biographies and autobiographies of Christian boxers and some interviews. There is very little published material at an academic level on the topic that we are considering. The conclusion is that despite the sincerity of the Christian boxers involved in the sport, it is difficult to justify boxing as a sport in relation to Christian teaching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Visual cryptography and its applications

Abstract

" In this thesis, a number of new schemes are presented which address current problems and shortcomings within the area of visual cryptography. Visual cryptography provides a very powerful means by which a secret, in the form of a digital image, can be distributed (encoded) into two or more pieces known as shares. When these shares are xeroxed onto transparencies and superimposed exactly together, the original secret can be recovered (decoded) without the necessity for computation. Traditionally, visual cryptography allows effective and efficient sharing of a single secret between a number of trusted parties. One aspect of the research within this thesis specifically addresses the issues of embedding more than two secrets within a set of two shares. Alignment poses a further problem. The placement of the shares must be specific. In order to ease ali~ent, the techniques developed within this thesis for sharing multiple secrets relaxes this restriction. The result is a scheme in which the shares can be superimposed upon one another in a multitude of positions and alignment styles which enables multiple secret recovery. Applications of visual cryptography are also examined and presented. This is an area within visual cryptography that has had very little attention in terms of research. The primary focus of the work presented within this thesis concentrates on applications of visual cryptography in real world scenarios. For such a simple and effective method of sharing secrets, practical applications are as yet, limited. A number of novel uses for visual cryptography are presented that use theoretical techniques in a practical way.

Abstract

This thesis examines the architectural and contextual connections between twenty-nine extant late medieval and early modern community buildings to establish whether they are sufficiently similar to be identified as a single building type. The buildings are located across different regions of England, the South West and East Anglia, and demonstrate a whole range of historical and modern designations, including ‘church houses’, ‘guildhalls’, ‘town halls’, and ‘market houses’. Though the buildings are predominantly in rural settings, several in small towns are included. Together with the more frequently studied town halls and market halls of larger towns and cities, particularly from the second half of the sixteenth century onwards, these permit an assessment of whether the building type can be applied across the town/country divide. Though buildings remain the primary source, the value of documentary and historical visual records is considered for their ability to provide images of lost or altered buildings, or details as to construction, plan-form, and use. Previous research was found to be too narrow in scope to appreciate connections beyond artificial limits, such as analysis of individual buildings without reference to their wider architectural context, or buildings grouped by dint of their shared name (e.g. ‘Church Houses in…’) or their location in towns (e.g. urban ‘civic halls’). The study found a set of overarching characteristics relating to architectural form and plan with which the selected buildings across the towns and villages of South West and East Anglia conform, followed by a shared set of sub-areas in which variations occur. In addition, it was found that all the buildings are spatially, and most likely functionally, related to an extant or vestigial open space, such as a village square or marketplace. Not only does this have implications for function and use, but also for linking them to the similarly-sited buildings in larger towns.

Abstract

Background: Myoepithelioma is a rare benign neoplasm, most commonly derived from salivary glands, but there are limited cases of extra salivary gland involvement too. There is little knowledge on typical investigative findings and, instead, diagnosis relies on immunohistochemistry analysis. To our knowledge, this paper reports the 13th case of sinonasal myoepithelioma in the English literature. Case report: This paper presents a 25-year-old man who complained of chronic nasal obstruction. A sinonasal mass was noted on examination that appeared benign on imaging. Biopsy revealed a grade 2 chondrosarcoma that was endoscopically resected; however, excisional margins were positive. On histopathological review at the multidisciplinary team meeting, the lesion was more in keeping with chondromyxoid fibroma, but immunohistochemistry analysis confirmed a myoepithelioma lesion. In light of this revised diagnosis, quorate opinion was for follow up with active monitoring. Conclusion: Sinonasal tumours require a thorough history, examination and investigation before a treatment plan can be formulated. If there is diagnostic uncertainty, it is important to keep a wide differential list and seek a second specialist opinion where possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
